THE PRINCESS DIARIES ♚
7 JUNE 2023 || MAIDENHEAD RUGBY CLUB, BERKSHIRE
The Princess of Wales visited the Maidenhead Rugby Club as Patron of the Rugby Football Union in Berkshire as a part of the Shaping Us Campaign.
She met local and national male players at the Club to discuss the Shaping Us campaign, hear more about their own childhood experiences and speak about the role that community settings can play in supporting children and parents.
During the visit, Catherine joined in rugby drills on the pitch with a number of local and professional players. She then headed inside the clubhouse for a conversation around early childhood experiences, fatherhood, and the impact that settings such as local sports clubs can have in creating a network of support around those who are helping to raise children.
She was joined by Shaping Us champion, Ugo Monye who is a former England rugby professional and father of two. Other participants in the conversation included professional rugby players alongside representatives from Maidenhead RFC and Si Trower, the founder of the mental health charity Brave Mind.
Brain Mind works with rugby clubs, universities and schools to provide a national platform to help rugby clubs and schools to improve their approach to supporting mental health in their community.

Thank you @tiny-tigers for tagging me!
Your favourite snack to watch rugby? I don’t have a go-to tbf, but todays was leftovers from a bbq
Your favourite drink to watch rugby? Depends on how the game is going, I’d say water but that usually transfers into needing something alcoholic 🥴 which would be gin or beer!
The team you will pick if you had to switch your fav team? Country wise it would be NZ considering I’m just as much a kiwi as I am English! Otherwise my second team will always be wherever George is 😅
Your favourite logo/badge (rwc teams)? Probably the All Blacks, I love the simplicity of the fern
Your least favourite player? I have a long list lol, some for good reasons, some for stupid reasons like Faf de Klerk who’s face is enough to annoy me 😂
Your favourite jersey from a rwc team? I hadn’t looked at kits for the World Cup but scrolling through the website now it’s probably the Fijian away kits! I’d normally say the All Blacks but I do not like the strange looking ferns they’ve got going on
Your favourite kit from your team, away or home? Don’t really like either of Leicester’s kits this year lol, and for England I prefer home
Player you are curious about and have a new interest in? Hmm can’t think of someone off the top of my head, but that will probably change as the World Cup goes on!
Fav female team? Looking forward to seeing how the Leicester ladies go in their first year in the 15’s!
Your favourite moment: warm up / match / aftermath / other... Obviously I love all of it, but I particularly love watching the warm ups and all the players little routines
Your dream match? Honestly at this moment in time the dream is just to see England play a decent match, and hopefully win at the end of it
Your favourite retired player? Hmm don’t know about a favourite, but I think Ugo Monye is pretty great, and I enjoy listening to Sam Warburton in commentary
Your current fav ref? Lol this changes every match depending on whether I agree with their decisions or not 😂
Your favourite nickname for a player? My dad and I have a lottt of completely random nicknames we’ve created over the years!! Off the top of my head because they were playing today, Jalibert has been referred to as ‘jellybelly’ from the first time we saw him play, and Itoje has been ‘emoji’ from dad mishearing the commentators the first time he saw him! 🤦🏻♀️😂
Your favourite thing about rugby? Hard to pick just one thing! I love the atmosphere when I get to see a match live, the runaway tries, when George makes other players look like idiots, the friendships it’s given me, and way it brings people together - I’ve never been to a game where I don’t end up chatting to people around me, or to strangers in pubs in Aus while watching league! And obviously my team winning lol

I'm listening to the BBC's rugby union weekly podcast (bc obvs it's pretty much all about Owen) and Ugo Monye just said:
"I think it's really sad that a person that loves the game so much hasn't been loved enough by the game."
I just burst into tears...

"Unacceptable" - Exeter Chiefs captain on racist abuse suffered by Ugo Monye | Rugby 2023/24
"Unacceptable" - Exeter Chiefs captain on racist abuse suffered by Ugo Monye | Rugby 2023/24 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=isvYuf5xMvU Exeter Chiefs captain Jack Yeandle said the racist abuse suffered by former England and Harlequins player Ugo Monye is "unacceptable". Yeandle was speaking at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London on Wednesday for the launch of the Champions Cup where he labelled the offender a "complete muppet". Police have "made contact" with a man in connection with the alleged racist abuse suffered by Monye after Sunday's match between Exeter and Gloucester. The 40-year-old former player, now a pundit, said the incident occurred as he was leaving Sandy Park following the Chiefs' 25-24 Gallagher Premiership victory. Devon and Cornwall Police said in a statement: "We have identified and made contact with a man in connection to the incident and we are in the process of speaking to the victim. "Our enquiries are currently ongoing into the incident." Monye wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, that as he was leaving the stadium, one supporter running through crowd repeatedly shouted a racist insult. He added: "Disgraceful. Not a single person said a word, challenged or even reported it. "He walks off after a mild scuffle and fans are now telling me 'We're with you' B******S you're with me. You weren't with me when you saw and heard the most blatant racism I've seen from a supporter at a live game. So fed up." Exeter swiftly issued a statement vowing to investigate the matter and apologising to Monye. It read: "In light of recent accusations regarding an incident of racist abuse at Sandy Park following the conclusion of our victory over Gloucester in the Gallagher Premiership, Exeter will be launching a full investigation. "This behaviour will not be tolerated at our rugby club, and we condemn it in the strongest possible terms.
