Dr. Edith Harper Chisholm
-2102- Resident Psychologist of Vault 76, honorary Responder, "field medic". -2287- Traveling researcher, Priestess of the Forgotten God, occult expert.
Once an esteemed graduate of Vault-Tec University and a close personal friend to the Chambers and Hopper families, Edith Chisholm set out on Reclamation Day alongside her fellow residents to explore and settle in the ruins of Appalachia together.
Throughout her journeys, she grew ever closer to Jaden Chambers and Beverly Hopper, coming to care for them as her own children, and soon enough found herself romantically involved with Janice Chambers. Though initially fully loyal to Vault 76's mission statement of "reclaiming the wasteland", Edith soon became disillusioned with The Overseer's colonial vision when the mysterious Scorched Plague threatened the health and wellbeing of her newly-found family.
Although curing mutagenic infections fell far outside her typical area of expertise, Edith worked tirelessly to formulate a treatment plan, utilizing the resources left behind by the extinct post-war factions and following the trial of breadcrumbs left behind by The Overseer to seek out a solution to this monumental problem. While she remained acutely aware of the dangers, fervently analyzing and documenting the unique "telepathic" properties of the Scorched Plague is likely where her morbid curiosity with the occult and the unexplained truly began.
In 2103, after the Scorchbeast Queen was slain, and a cure for the plague was finalized and distributed, Edith's fascination with unexplained phenomena began to turn into obsession. Though her many encounters with so called "cryptid" and "mythical" entities served to fuel this fixation, the main driving force behind Edith's predilections came after Beverly Hopper's exposure to an unearthed mysterious artifact granted her with telekinetic powers, transforming Beverly into a kind of Psyker.
At first, Beverly's powers were greatly beneficial to the survival of the family and to the returning wastelanders, crushing raiders and crippling the abominable mutant hordes who would have seen them all dead or enslaved. But as the months drew on, and as Beverly grew in power, so too did she begin to grow reckless and careless as well, becoming as much a danger to herself and those around her as to her would-be foes. A force of raw fury and power to be reckoned with.
By 2104, Beverly's growing instability lead to tragedy when her family finally confronted her with their concerns, lashing out against them and mortally wounding Jaden when he dove in front of Edith aand his mother, taking the brunt of Beverly's telekinetic blast. Realizing what she had done, Beverly fled across Appalachia, leaving a path of carnage in her wake. Solemnly, Edith and Janice swore to stop their adopted daughter by any means necessary. Relentlessly they pursued Beverly until finally cornering her inside an abandoned nuclear facility, where a final confrontation played out, ending with Edith trapped inside the reactor core and suffering intense radiation exposure. Though she miraculously survived and was rescued by Janice, over the coming weeks and months, Edith underwent the slow and painful transformation into a ghoul, while Janice's health merely deteriorated.
Broken and grieving and irradiated, Janice and Edith returned to the homestead they had built, caring for each other until the end. Desperate to find some form of "understanding" in the wake of so much pain and loss, Edith sought out spiritual guidance and found her way to The Enlightened, fully indulging herself into the field of paranormal and occult research, etching crude wings onto her face and proclaiming herself as a Priestess of the Forgotten God.
Years later, when the Brotherhood Of Steel's fledgling presence made it unsafe for Edith to exist in the open, rumours began to spread among the Appalachian settlers about a dangerous and powerful mad-woman wreaking havoc and destruction somewhere to the east of Appalachia. A rumour which Edith has been chasing ever since.

Day One
I asked Preston to stay behind in Covenant. I will have to be by myself for my trek into the wild.
So, I took with me a hunting knife and an old sock that I stuffed with doughnuts from The Restaraunt and went down south in those shitty bogs that border the Glowing Sea. I broke into an underground lab run by a ghoul that used to be feral and his desperate wife. I robbed them of a t-shirt and some Psycho.
I was cold, wet and godlike. I then went and made for Somerville, which was under siege by Gunners. On my way, I was hassled by Rust Devils who gave me a good deal of trouble. My knife wasn't strong enough to pierce their armor and i burned through my doughnut supply trying to survive a fistfight with the devils.
Once at Somerville, I watched my employees ruthlessly pepper the gunners with missiles. Then at Somerville, i slept...and I dreamed of a place, a church of infinite dark hallways and a message written above my bed that read "Give It Back."
I feel drawn now...I have to head further south into the Glowing Sea.

Fallout of Darkness meets Beneath a Broken Sky
BABS Alice: Wow, and I thought the year 2000 was advanced. Even accounting for the...post-war situation.
BABS Victor: Still weird that this is, what, the third place that has vampires? Something has to be up with that.
BABS Alice: That is quite odd.
Dr. Daniel, examining an ominous looking book with a gash on its cover: I'm more curious this defiance-of-death deity here!
Fallout of Darkness Victor: To be fair, my world seems to be weirdly behind in a few ways too -- color television was not the norm before the bombs fell. And our computers weren't nearly so nice... Honestly, though, at this point I'm just glad that my apocalypse didn't either blow up the sun or turn it evil.
FOD Alice: Same here...and I don't think it's that bizarre that multiple universes would have vampires. Maybe it's a little more odd that they would have the same kind of vampires, yes, but -- vampires in general? After some of the things I've seen, and some of the things you've seen, that should be barely be a blip on the radar.
FOD Victor: [nods -- and then sees the book Dr. Daniel is looking at; he blanches -- somehow -- and rubs his throat] I -- I wouldn't -- I'd be careful with that.
#thesatiricaldemon#~M: I want some questions! now! (ask)#~M: a glimpse between worlds (meta)#~V: Fallout Of Darkness#universe comparison ask game#~C: Victor Van Dort#~C: Alice Liddell#((I mean the Fallout apocalypse was bad but#at least it was just nukes#the eldritch monstrosities didn't move in until later :p#Victor just has some bad memories regarding Ug-Qualtoth Dr. Dan#he'll be okay just -- yeah#don't mention the machete he and Alice carry around))#~M: with this hand I will lift your queue

Fallout New Vegas!Baldur's Gate 3 AU:
Astarion: mutant cannibal who subsists on human blood. Has found like-minded individuals at the Ultra-Luxe on the Strip, and now works recruiting young men who no one will miss for "dinner".
Gale: a researcher who ghoulified himself during a failed experiment on human evolution, who now requires mass infusions of rads to keep his condition stable and avoid nuclear meltdown. Shunned by polite society and white-tower academia, he now travels with the Followers of the Apocalypse. Does not do well in the desert.
Karlach: former super-mutant from the Master's army, on the run to atone for her sins. One of the modifications the Master made was a fusion core engine that became damaged in the destruction of the Cathedral, requiring consistent preventative maintenance if she wants to keep it from spewing rads. Currently hiding out in Jacobstown from Wyll and the NCR.
Lae'zel: Brotherhood knight who got separated from the rest of her chapter at Helios One. Unable to find where her chapter is holed up, she dedicates herself to tracking down powerful technology and destroying it.
Shadowheart: from a vault originally designed to activate latent psyker abilities that eventually spiraled into full-blown cult. Chosen to track down and recover a powerful artifact of Ug-Qualtoth that the leader of her cult desires. Doesn鈥檛 remember most of her past due to selective mind wiping.
Wyll: son of an NCR senator who enlisted with the Rangers when he came of age, and was then recruited by a woman only known as "Ms. Ora" to a special ops unit. Ms. Ora augmented his body with cybernetics and FEV, changing him into a hunting machine. He now spends his time hunting down remnants of the Master's army.

And unrelated, but how do you think Fallout handles the occasional supernatural elements? Do you think they should stay as occasional homages to the pulp serial roots, or would they withstand being integrated more firmly into the setting?
Despite my intense affection for that entire side of things I think it's in a similar spot to their occasional forays into the superhero stuff- it objectively fits within the setting, it's no weirder than anything else we're supposed to take seriously, but there's a risk that if they take it too seriously it'll completely eat the worldbuilding- and worse, mainlining the Ug-Qualtoth plot would result in the Ug-Qualtoth plot being handled by whoever it is that writes the main plots for these games. A lot of the genuinely solid writing at Bethesda happens in the margins because it's in the margins- everything interesting about the supernatural wouldn't survive the sterilizing wavelength of the main quest spotlight. That said, if they're ever dumb enough to let me write a Fallout game, you are going, and this is non-negotiable, you are going to run into a small band of amicable Zetan worker drones who escaped to earth in the aftermath of the Mothership Zeta DLC, all of whom worship the Lone Wanderer as a Messianic figure for murdering their bosses, decorating their lair with vault 101 iconography and shrines and whatnot. There will be no quest directly associated with them but they will be unavoidably, undeniably canon, there will be no escape from it, there will be no wild wasteland figleaf. They will trade energy weapons and other tinkerwork to the nearby settlements like militant Keebler elves. It will permanently alter the dialogue options available to you if you're asked if you believe in aliens. Knowing about them will open up orthogonal solutions to other side quests. You will communicate with them primarily through SPECIAL-gated pantomime in a way that limits actual concrete expansion of the Zetan lore in a deliberately frustrating way. It will wrap around the rest of the game like a strangler vine and people who hate fun will fold in on themselves in a singularity of aesthetic distaste

Campfire tales and urban legends of The Mojave:
I like to imagine that there's some campfire tales and urban legends spread throughout The Mojave told by scavengers, prospectors, traders, mercenaries and NCR recruits to pass the time. Some of these you may have already heard like The Legend of The Sierra Madre Casino or The Horrors of The Divide or whispers about The Burned Man, but you haven't heard of these.
Some of these are based on old urban legends that were passed around on game forums back in the day, others are based on dialogue and some are based on old. creepypastas.
So let's see what campfire tales and urban legends are told in The Mojave hm?
Lone Wolf Radio: Many scavengers and prospectors have discovered the eerie sight of Lone Wolf Radio an abandoned trailer on a hill not too far from Goodsprings Source with various tin cans, electronics, radio devices and various junk spread around the trailer whoever lived in this trailer is long gone and only the graffiti left by them remains: "Everyone is gone, I am all alone, let it all end." Not many scavengers and prospectors go to Lone Wolf Radio anymore due to the urban legend told about it. The urban legend goes that in the late hours of the morning a radio signal will be found called "Lone Wolf Radio", the DJ of this odd radio station is a man who simply calls himself "The Lone Wolf" who will go on incoherent ramblings until 3 in the morning when he will bring a child on air and say "Everyone is gone, I am all alone, let it all end." before killing the child on air and then the signal will be lost. There is no evidence of this "Lone Wolf" person existing nor is their the remains of any dead children around the abandoned radio station nor has there been any "Lone Wolf Radio" station ever been found but nonetheless nobody really goes to The Lone Wolf Radio site ever since this urban legend popped up.
Old Lady Gibson: Now, you might be wondering "What's so scary about Old Lady Gibson? She's just a little old lady who lives in a scrap yard with her dogs." Well, the story goes some drunken NCR recruits stumbled upon the old shack not too far from the scrap yard and encountered a disturbing sight, a skeleton laying on a bloody mattress and a bloody machete stabbed into the nearby wall with a disembodied finger held into the wall by the machete. Now, it's not actually said who the blood, the finger or the skeleton belongs to but the story changes from person to person. Some say that the blood, finger and skeleton belongs to the husband of Old Lady Gibson who she murdered and hid his body in the shack. Another idea is that the blood, finger and skeleton belongs to Old Lady Gibson and the one who lives in the scrap yard isn't the real Old Lady Gibson who murdered the real Old Lady Gibson and assumed her identity. It makes sense why Elijah took temporary refuge in the shack due to the urban legend surrounding the shack and Old Lady Gibson herself.
The City Under The Mojave: Another story that's spread about is that there is an ancient alien city beneath The Mojave Wasteland, some say that the city belonged to a cult who worshipped Ug-Qualtoth, others believe it's an ancient alien city, some say it's both. Nobody has actually found this ancient city but most stories of the legend say that the entrance to the city is somewhere in the north by Horowitz Farmstead due to some scavengers and prospectors claiming to see an alien shuttle overlooking the nearby cliffs and three green humanoid creatures skulking about below, in search of something.
Area 51: This one has some merit unlike the other three urban legends, Area 51 is a pre-war government facility in Nevada which everyone knows about, the problem is, nobody seems to be able to find Area 51 which is why most wastelanders believe it to be an urban legend. Some believe that Area 51 is the real entrance to the ancient city under The Mojave and could possibly be near Horowitz Farmstead but again, nobody has actually been able to find the facility.
The Lake Mead Monster: Now, you may believe that The Lake Mead Monster is simply just the plane that was at the bottom of the lake but the legend of The Lake Mead Monster existed long before the plane even surfaced. Some believe that The Lake Mead Monster is some type of mutated aquatic life similarly to the lakelurks but nobody has actually seen any proof or evidence of this supposed Lake Mead Monster.
The Numbers Station: One of the more older urban legends of The Mojave. The story goes that an odd broadcast had been found some time before The Battle of Hoover Dam. The DJ is a depressed, monotoned voiced man who reads out some numbers before the rest of the broadcast is a series of beeps which have been decoded to be morse code. It's said in the urban legend that the first set of numbers and beeps predicted the return of Mr. House, another set of numbers and beeps predicted The NCR succeeding in holding The Hoover Dam and another predicted the events of Bitter Springs and eeriely enough, all three of these predictions have happened. The story varies here stating that other predictions would be the destruction of The Mojave Chapter of The Brotherhood, the destruction of Searchlight, the massive jailbreak of The NCRFC, the death of Chief Hanlon, the death of Caesar, the death of President Kimball, the death of Mr. House, The NCR continuing to hold The Dam, The Legion taking The Dam, Mr. House taking The Dam, a mysterious force over securitrons and various other unseen before technologies led by one singular person taking The Dam, a strange serious of bizarre scientific happenings destroying The Mojave, ghosts immune to gunfire and a blood red mist enveloping The Mojave and the mysterious nuking of The Long 15 and the Legion settlement of Dry Wells, unlike the first three predictions however, none of these have happened yet.

Dunwich Borers LLC had an "abysmal" record of human safety precautions, which often led to employee deaths. This was rumored to be an intentional way for corporate leadership to preform human sacrifice.

Hey boss, just finished playing the "children of Ug-Qualtoth" quest mod for fallout 4, and I gotta ask, were you a consultant or writer on this? Cuz that mod make me think of this blog repeatedly
i edited the script for grammar, credited as "curata cara." the creativity had nothing to do with me, i reached out to contribute because i was so blown away. glad you enjoyed it! Winter of Atom reads like a canonization of its concepts, if you haven't yet had the pleasure.
i started a full rewrite of CoUQ and the director liked it but i never finished it and he retired recently. you can actually read that here.
original:
rewrite:
im gna ask about publishing this for my wiki shelves. im sure hell be fine with it. thanks for reminding me of this
