BEIJING — China’s struggling real estate developers won’t be getting a major bailout, Chinese authorities have indicated, warning that those who “harm the interests of the masses” will be punished.
“For real estate companies that are seriously insolvent and have lost the ability to operate, those that must go bankrupt should go bankrupt, or be restructured, in accordance with the law and market principles,” Ni Hong, Minister of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, said at a press conference Saturday.
“Those who commit acts that harm the interests of the masses will be resolutely investigated and punished in accordance with the law,” he said. “They will be made to pay the due price.”
That’s according to a CNBC translation of his Mandarin-language remarks published in an official transcript of the press conference, held alongside China’s annual parliamentary meetings.
Ni’s comments come as major real estate developers from Evergrande to Country Garden have defaulted on their debt, while plunging new home sales have put future business into question.
In 2020, Beijing cracked down on developers’ high reliance on debt for growth in an attempt to clamp down on property market speculation. But many developers soon ran out of money to finish building apartments, which are typically sold to homebuyers in China ahead of completion. Some buyers stopped paying their mortgages in a boycott.
Authorities have since announced measures to provide some developers with financing. But the national stance on reducing the role of real estate in the economy hasn’t changed.
This year’s annual government gathering has emphasized the country’s focus on investing in and building up high-end manufacturing capabilities. In contrast, the leadership has not mentioned the massive real estate sector as much.
Real estate barely came up during a press conference focused on the economy last week, while Ni was speaking during a meeting that focused on “people’s livelihoods.”
Ni said authorities would promote housing sales and the development of affordable housing, while emphasizing the need to consider the longer term.
Near-term changes in the property sector have a significant impact on China’s overall economy.
Real estate was once about 25% of China’s GDP, when including related sectors such as construction. UBS analysts estimated late last year that property now accounts for about 22% of the economy.
Last week, Premier Li Qiang said in his government work report that in the year ahead, China would “move faster to foster a new development model for real estate.”
“We will scale up the building and supply of government-subsidized housing and improve the basic systems for commodity housing to meet people’s essential need for a home to live in and their different demands for better housing,” an English-language version of the report said.
next time you complain about how things are in America, consider that if you lived in some kind of scary communist country like China, you wouldn't even get to fund a bailout for the real estate company owners who ruined the economy like you can (whether you like it or not) in the good old US of A! 🇺🇲

Good afternoon. I'd like to share a perspective on UB and competitive Magic.
In a previous answer, you had said that UB cards were something customizable, that you didn't have to play with them if they don't appeal to you. And that's true! What that doesn't take into account is competitive meta and the necessity of various cards. I think The One Ring is a good example; for a massive majority of Modern decks, you can significantly improve almost every deck with copies of The One Ring. If you're running an artifact-oriented deck or a control deck, you are actively hindering your deck by not playing it.
So for an audience that has been invested in formats like Modern who are faced with this power, what are they supposed to do? Personally I don't mind when my opponents play UB cards, but for players who do mind that, if they're in the same Venn overlap, they can't exactly tell an opponent in a high-stakes match to please play something else out of principle.
Thank you for listening, by the way, to all these various voices. I know that Marvel and comics mean as much to you as Magic does, and I also know you're going to get a lot of players who aren't going to be as kind in their opposition to UB. There's little middle ground at this point in Magic's present for how UB has impacted the game, but I hope that we as a player base can maintain an open perspective of personal wants vs. the larger schema.
I believe when you play competitively you accept that you'll be playing with people that are prioritizing efficiency of mechanics over creative execution.

Resident Evil 3 (2020) -Message From A Colleague & Unsealed Envelope - Brad and Jill's little story
I've explained before why I thought it was obvious Jill's letter is a direct response to Brad, but had long considered making it its own post, to add more clarification to it.
Brad asks Jill how she's doing. Talking about Irons suspending her, as well as her going around asking questions and looking into matters.
The first thing Jill addresses is HOW she's doing. She mentioned being pinned down at home, and has people she imagines are from UB or Irons, watching her 24/7.
Brad said he hopes she's not mad at him for keeping his head down (he's talking about the dealings with Umbrella, and him not involving himself in trying to bring them to justice). He didn't expect Irons not to fire him after disbanding STARS.
Brad then tells Jill that he's heard (somehow) that she was planning on leaving RC. He then cautions Jill to watch her back, because UB would undoubtedly come for her, because she was actively trying to bring them down (which is why she was prevented from doing any further digging and STUCK in her apartment with people monitoring her apartment 24/7).
Jill tells Brad she knows what they're trying to do. They were trying to break her down and make her stop what she was doing. She said she wasn't going to let them win.
Jill confirms that she is planning on leaving RC and why. It has NOTHING to do with following up with Chris and Barry in Europe as they all agreed in the original RE3 lore (which is actually a retcon for them having to change RE2's lore because Jill got booted from CV). That is not part of the newly established lore in the remakes.
Jill wanted to leave RC in this game because her SOLO investigation in RC, had come to a screeching halt thanks to Irons/Umbrella. She tells this person that she had to find some way to make them accountable (indicating she had to think of her next move...which would suggest her next move wasn't going to join up with Chris). That alone should tell anyone who this letter is for. Chris is already doing his part to find a way to bring UB to justice, so it clearly is not him, and Barry has moved to Canada to protect his family from the prying eyes of UB at this point. Barry doesn't even come to Jill's rescue in this game. Even that is retconned in this timeline.
For the record, Barry has LONG been retconned from ever having anything to do with what Jill and Chris were up to post RC, in terms of Umbrella's takedown.
No Anti-UB anything. He STAYED out of the fight. Revelations 2 established that after the BSAA was formed, Chris and Jill invited him to be a consultant. It wasn't even until after this did Claire meet the Burtons. Barry returning in RE3 was still referred to in Rev2's supplemental material, but again, it's completely retconned in this version of events.
Jill also wrote in RE3R - UB would send someone to silence her undoubtedly, or "whatever is it they do to people like me." Chris IS a "people like me" so again, she wouldn't be talking about Chris. One can read Dr. Isaac Grave's file in Nest 2, to read about what they did to someone who was trying to leak secrets about UB, and how it made him afraid to spill the beans on anything.
^This is what happens when you lack strength/courage and become "tormented into compliance." Jill was a bigger threat to them, and as such, they sent something to deal with someone of her skillset. Brad would eventually be made aware that he was a target as well, despite not being involved with trying to taking them down.
But READ again what Jill was saying here. She said IF he HEARD she was killed or whatever, she wanted him to pick up with her investigation WHERE SHE LEFT OFF! Jill's investigation was in RC!!! BRAD IS THE ONLY PERSON in RC! He even KNEW she had been looking into things herself. This is flat out telling players, this letter, which is directly across from Brad's letter to her and the pizza he had delivered to her, who the letter is really for.

Consider this too. Jill's letter, when you observe it is titled "unsealed envelope," and Brad's is "Message from a colleague." You do not see his name until the latter part of the letter. Why not just say who Jill's letter is to, or call Brad's letter "Brad's letter to Jill"? Seems to me they wanted us to put things together just by reading them. They did the same thing with Chris's letter, it was titled "Letter to S.T.A.R.S. Members." Poor Rebecca STILL completely ignored in all of this. :P If you were to read Jill's letter first, you would maybe wonder who it was for, if you read Brad's letter next, it would be made clear. There would be no reason to guess, if you read Brad's first.
So it always seemed evident to me, Jill's letter was a RESPONSE letter to Brad that she couldn't deliver or was afraid of even attempting to do so, you know with spies watching her every move, assuming deliveries were still happening by then. Even Brad knew he'd have to find a way to be discreet to communicate with her, and told her as such. He wouldn't even call her from what we know, until he attempted to warn her about Nemesis. They are establishing Brad is someone looking out for Jill.
They showed Brad trying to get the attention of a helicopter, which was a nice little callback to when he left them outside of the mansion I always felt. Brad came to the area where she was living, and stopped in his tracks when he saw her. He signaled for her to come with him in the opposite direction he was headed in. They would end up having to go inside of a nearby bar, due to the hordes of zombies and barricades coming down. He waited on her, and had her go in first. He was looking out for her (a shift from the original game).
Brad told Jill to go for the back exit when inside, and was bit before she made it there. Jill was refusing to let him go, because she cared about him.
In her letter, Jill said she was MOVING in 5 days (specifically saying at night even), and we could see how much time passed before that date was intended to be, by looking at her calendars. This means her plans to move, were meant to be happening very soon and before all this chaos erupted in front of her, so the person she was going to find a way to deliver this letter/package to was someone LOCAL. This letter would've needed to be properly addressed, had the postage covered in full, etc to be shipped overseas. We don't even know if Jill KNEW where Chris was exactly, because he sent his CODED letter to the RPD, not to Barry or Jill directly, and nothing presented to us tells us she knew anything precise (there's nothing written by her focused on him either).
In the OG epilogue for her, Jill found his hideout AFTER the events of CV began, so more than a couple of months time had passed. She would've needed a place to stay, identification, money, a passport, etc. People seem to forget/ignore she lost everything she owned.

Jill pinned some notes to this poster for the pizza place in town, that just happened to mention "anytime, anywhere delivery." Them delivering to mars is obviously not serious, but you could consider from this that Jill was perhaps considering slipping her package with a delivery person like Brad said he had done with his letter, but perhaps with the spies watching her activity, chose not to put someone innocent in danger. Not to mention the city was already having issues erupting. Jill herself was even shocked to see how quickly the virus spread in the city.

Jill had two calendars in her apartment, with the one on her refrigerator having some notes for dates set in October. This shows she was planning ahead for some things, and knew she had a bigger fight ahead of her...I mean, in the new timeline where Kendo had a different story, and was still alive at this point, Jill wanted him to get out of town with her, and she told him this:
It was very apparent her focus was on bringing the fight to the bad guys directly.

Jill's apartment showed she had recently been packing for her move. Some boxes have been sealed and even have labels on them. Looking at many of the open boxes, we can see this clearly wouldn't be for anything overseas. Packing plates without protection, AND some leftover rolls of toilet paper, to have shipped to Europe? I doubt that. What we do know is Jill said she was moving out of RC, she talked about HER HERSELF, finding some way to hold UB accountable for their actions. She doesn't mention Chris or even Barry. We also know that in the end of the game we see her having settled in somewhere else.
Instead of the storm in her nightmare, or the real nightmare that was outside of her apartment, Jill is shown in a place where there is daylight, a calm wind, birds chirping etc. We see some similar things that she had in her old apartment, but also a punching bag (and it's evident Jill would want to improve her skills and prepare for the fight to come). The focus isn't on her looking MONTHS later for anyone else, only to find a bloody knife on the floor, etc, but her grabbing the reminder of what was lost in RC, and her carrying onward to bring justice to all those responsible (not even just UB). SHE said RC's ashes would be THEIRS! "I would end them once and for all." I, not WE. She was declaring WAR! The game ends with Jill's determination growing even stronger. Do I believe she would still eventually meet up with Chris? Yes, but I see no reason to believe EVERYTHING remains the same without any concrete evidence, when literally they have gone out of their way to CHANGE SEVERAL things. Even Operation Javier has a different story in RE4R's version of events.
When Jill asked Nikolai who he was working for outside of UB, and didn't agree to his terms for him to tell her anything, he told her she would never find out. Jill said she didn't mind doing some detective work. This is something she is saying she would do HERSELF! Again, indicating she is doing her OWN thing. This NEVER happened in the original timeline.
Some headcanon Jill as putting on Chris's shirt, even though his shirts would not fit the same on her. I see no reason to think it would be his, and the fact the shirt is literally a recolor of the one she had on in her nightmare, leads me to believe it would be hers anyway. It also isn't like we haven't seen her in something green before (or that she owned different colored attire like her apartment even showed)...
Military green...Jill was declaring war on bioterrorism...hmmm...
Going back to the bar scene, keep in mind what Brad wrote to Jill. Brad said he hoped Jill could forgive him/not be mad for basically not being involved with everything. In her letter she is says "IF" (meaning it's circumstantial- just like how Chris told Jill to ONLY tell Claire he is "ok" IF Claire contacted her). She's saying IF something happened to her, and he found out (he knew of her planning to move out of RC somehow...and he lives in RC still so he would be able to be in the loop), THEN and ONLY then did she want him to pick up with where her investigation ended. This shows she wasn't mad at him, and could forgive his past actions. Again this investigation was HER own, and it was IN RC! Chris already made it clear he wasn't coming back to RC anytime soon and keeping a low profile (he said he was thinking of staying at least another six months from when he addressed them), and Barry was never returning either. It was ONLY her and Brad.
After Brad was bitten, he asked her were they still a team, and she told him "Always." You could even connect that to how he signed his name with "STARS Alpha team (now and forever)." He told her not to fuck up like he did and to go! He knew he was a lost cause. She hesitated, but honored his wishes.
To me her "bleeding heart" that Nikolai would berate her for having (yet people wanna call this Jill an ice-cold bitch SMDH), only showed Jill had actually not harbored any hatred toward Brad for not being involved. She still considered him her friend/teammate. Yeah Jill wouldn't see Nemesis kill a STARS member in front of where they had worked like in the OG, but I appreciated them trying to do a little redemption arc for Brad, and showing more of a bond between the two characters. I LOVED seeing him having gotten her something to eat (even moreso seeing how she wrote/we could tell she was barely eating and sleeping), and finding some way to check on her. Him trying to warn her about Nemesis, telling her to come with him. It's why it's a shame to me, how so many people just completely ignore all of the rich details in her apartment that tell a part of her story, and who she is.
She's not looking into a "dead factory" which doesn't exist in the remake. Again, they CHANGED the lore. There is only RE2R's Nest and RE3R's Nest 2 in this timeline. Just like the rail cannon in THIS version of RE3 has a different backstory and name, same with all the other changes to characters, backstories, locations etc.. You CANNOT mix OG RE3 lore with the new one. THEY DO NOT work together.
Again, I have talked about this before, and have long considered making a post specifically about this, so for those that find it informative, and/or perhaps it has opened you up to looking at things from a different POV, enjoy!

In finance, a contract for difference (CFD) is a financial agreement between two parties, commonly referred to as the "buyer" and the "seller." The contract stipulates that the buyer will pay the seller the difference between the current value of an asset and its value at the time the contract was initiated. If the asset's price increases from the opening to the closing of the contract, the seller compensates the buyer for the increase, which constitutes the buyer's profit. Conversely, if the asset's price decreases, the buyer compensates the seller, resulting in a profit for the seller.
Developed in Britain in 1974 as a way to leverage gold, modern CFDs have been trading widely since the early 1990s. CFDs were originally developed as a type of equity swap that was traded on margin. The invention of the CFD is widely credited to Brian Keelan and Jon Wood, both of UBS Warburg, on their Trafalgar House deal in the early 1990s.
It remains common for hedge funds and other asset managers to use CFDs as an alternative to physical holdings (or physical short selling) for UK listed equities, with similar risk and leverage profiles. A hedge fund's prime broker will act as the counterparty to CFD, and will often hedge its own risk under the CFD (or its net risk under all CFDs held by its clients, long and short) by trading physical shares on the exchange. Trades by the prime broker for its own account, for hedging purposes, will be exempt from UK stamp duty.[citation needed]

Something I think people don't appreciate enough is just how batshit insane Charles Lightoller's life was, because, for better or for worse, the man had incredible main character energy.
Most people probably know of him from the sinking of the RMS Titanic - he was the highest-ranking officer to survive, and he was the one that refused to let any men on the lifeboats (Jonny Phillips portrayed him in the '97 movie). When the ship went down, he got sucked into one of the ventilators but was trapped against a grate, then a blast of hot air blew him back to the surface, where he climbed onto an overturned lifeboat and spent the night coaching the others on the boat through keeping their balance until they were finally able to get into one of the other boats.
Since apparently that wasn't enough insanity for a single lifetime, here's some other completely normal and unremarkable facts about his life:
During his early career as a seaman, the ship he was on ran aground on a deserted island in the Indian Ocean and he (and the rest of the crew) was stranded for several days.
He tried his hand prospecting for gold in the Yukon (unsuccessfully). Then he became a cowboy.
He met his wife, Sylvia, while serving on the SS Suveic. She had a bad foot so he would help her up and down stairs, and they became close. He was apparently so upset about the idea of not seeing her again that some of the other officers just told him to marry her, which he did. They had five children, and by all accounts were very happy.
While serving on the HMS Garry during WWI, he sank German U-boat UB-110, then allegedly opened fire on the survivors, which he later admitted to in a memoir. He received a Distinguished Service Cross for this incident.
During WWII, he sailed his personal pleasure yacht, the Sundowner, to assist in the Dunkirk evacuation, during which he rescued 127 men. The character of "Mr. Dawson" in Christopher Nolan's 2017 film Dunkirk was inspired by him.
He wrote an autobiography called Titanic and Other Ships. I don't know why but I just find that title funny.
Please, do with this knowledge what you wish.

Warning signs of the instability of the global financial system abounded in the months leading up to the 2008 Lehman Brothers crash. Among these early signs were the astounding revelations about UBS, the world’s largest private bank, by Stephanie Gibaud, who was employee at the bank’s French division. Gibaud refused instructions given to her and other employees to delete all their company files. In doing so, she helped reveal a vast web of corruption and fraud linking UBS to a shadowy tax evasion scheme. More than 15 years later, Gibaud has endured harassment, professional ostracization, lawsuits, and threats. She joins The Chris Hedges Report to speak on her ordeal and the extent of corruption in the international banking system.
Chris Hedges: Stephanie Gibaud in June, 2008, was ordered by one of her managers at the UBS Bank in Paris, to destroy all her computer files that related to customers with offshore accounts in Switzerland. The order came in the wake of the 2007 American banker, Bradley Birkenfeld’s disclosure of client information to the US Department of Justice, which suggested that UBS was facilitating massive tax evasion schemes for its American clients, which ultimately led to a penalty of $780 million. Swiss banks have long been havens for those seeking to avoid taxes. In 2014, for example, Credit Suisse, which would also plead guilty to sheltering money for its clients so they could avoid paying taxes, had to pay $2.6 billion in penalties.
Gibaud, however, was the only bank employee at UBS who refused to delete her files. She protested to UBS management and French regulators. Her documents would eventually help to identify 38,000 offshore bank accounts amounting to $12 billion. UBS responded by trying to fire her as part of a mass redundancy of 100 employees during the 2008 financial crisis. The French Ministry of Work intervened, but her life at UBS became excruciating. She suffered harassment and discrimination along with social and professional isolation. She endured constant anxiety and depression. UBS fired her finally in 2012. She was sued for defamation by the bank after writing her book, The Woman Who Knew Too Much, part of a series of lawsuits that plague her to this day.
She requested compensation totaling 3.5 million euros and the judge gave her 4,500 euros, which barely covered her legal fees. UBS was eventually forced to pay a record fine in 2019 of $4.9 billion, but Gibaud found herself financially ruined and blacklisted from the financial sector where she had spent her career. The French legal system does not compensate whistleblowers, unlike the US. The Commodities Future Trading Commission, for example, recently awarded an anonymous whistleblower around $200 million for providing information about Deutsche Bank’s manipulation of the LIBOR benchmark. Birkenfeld, who exposed UBS’s offshore accounts for American clients, was handed a check from the US Treasury for $104 million, minus taxes. Gibaud is currently battling in the French courts to become the first legally recognized whistleblower, which could pave the way for greater protection and compensation.

@hoshizorax ( literally cannot believe we're doing this omg-- )
eito's starting to think he needs a bigger bag for all of his markers, especially when he's planning on going to the docks for inspiration. or at the vest least, maybe he needs to stop making trips to that desserts cafe every time he heads out for the day. it's not good for his bank account, his hips, or his ability to carry all of his things without making himself look like a total idiot.
tote bag in one hand, coffee in the other, and this delicious pastry that has an ube cream filling that eito's just been dying to try. the pastry is in a bag currently being held in eito's mouth - it's not the greatest set up, but he's in a rush and it would hardly be the first time he's gone across town like this.
this part of the city was always bustling, made it a bit hard to nagivate through the sheer amount of people walking past him. he's doing okay - but it's like someone has a personal vendetta out on him because eito can see them headed straight for him, knocking into his shoulder and sending all of his belongings flying, sends eito tumbling to the ground too.
❝ no! ❞ he groans, disappointed clear as day as someone steps on his pastry -- guess he's not trying that today. his pens, however are scattered across the sidewalk and eito all but scrambles to pick them all up. his uncle siius had spent far too much money on these things, said that he was investing in eito's future and gosh, he doesn't want to lose any of them!
a hand comes into his field of vision, holding the last few pens he'd been searching for and oh, eito's never been so relieved. he takes the pens without a second though, looking up at the stranger with a relieved expression on his face.
❝ --thank you! thank you, oh my goodness - i thought i'd lost them for good! ❞
#threads || eito#hoshizorax#amun's hand is literally the only thing in here and my brain is like SMACK IT AWAY EITO IT'S NOT WORTH IT

For almost 50 years, Brazilian-born New York–based artist Lydia Okumura (b. 1948), like her contemporaries Dorothea Rockburne and Robert Irwin, has explored the realm of geometric abstraction by challenging our perception of space in her sculptures, installations, and works on paper. In the 1970s, as a young artist in her native São Paulo, she was introduced to Conceptual art, Minimalism, Land Art, and Arte Povera through the Japanese art magazine Bijutsu Techou. These movements, along with Brazilian Concretism and Neoconcretism, influenced Okumura’s dynamic work in which she uses simple materials such as string, glass and paint to balance line, plane and shadow.
This handsome exhibition catalog, produced to accompany the artist’s first solo exhibition in the United States at the University of Buffalo Art Gallery and to encourage a critical reassessment of Okumura’s oeuvre within art history, is a rich document of her minimal practice and independent vision. The catalog includes an essay on Okumura and her work by curator Rachel Adams; an account of vanguardism in Brazilian art from 1960 to 1975 by art historian Mari Rodriguez Binnie; a conversation between Adams and Okumura; and extensive photo documentation of Okumura’s work from the 1970s until today.

I finally got around to reading that new chapter and wow, what a ride! This is my first time making an account just to send an ask but I'm a little scared for the next coming chapters.
If PC starts prostituting it's possibly she may get attacked/kidnapped since Brair doesn't have security like Darryl... at least not to protect PC specifically. Brair themselves can be pretty scary sometimes too, is it possible that PC will be attacked by someone who thinks she's (y/n) but never had a chance with her, *or* the possibility that PC will just be put into the UB anyway?
I really am excited for the coming chapters... What a wild ride so far on this incredibly slow burn!
Oh... One last question. I really love your writing still in both this fic and the homicipher one! It inspires me to want to write again... would it offend you if I replicated your writing style? I just find it so nice!
Cheers <3
I can't really answer the first question about what'll happen if PC starts to work for Briar because of spoilers but yes, it def opens her up more about possibly meeting more people since Briar doesn't have security! Also, dw, I don't really believe people can copyright a writing style lmao, so you're good to try and replicate or imitate it as inspiration!
