I understand the point of this and yes it is awful that it dosent just do that anymore. In the event you are willing to take the extra steps (and use ublock) here's this. On firefox it was basically a 1 click install, it's not perfect but it helps.

Here's uBlock Origin's official guide to bypassing youtube's anti-adblock popups, updated weekly. Please share widely. Don't reward google for their predatory anti-consumer bullshit
To summarize: 1. Get uBlock Origin and make sure it's updated to the latest version. 2. Click on the gear icon to get to the dashboard, go to "Filter lists", and make sure that "uBlock filters - Quick fixes" is up to date
Repeat those steps any time you get another popup (google and uBlock are having an arms race right now so it might stop working at any moment), and if you have any more problems, read the reddit thread for troubleshooting advice

Google finally did it. Is it time to switch to Firefox? I believe users should be in control of what they can install and use on their desktop or laptop. There's uBlock Origin Lite, which replaces the original uBlock Origin for Chrome and similar browsers. Give it a try.

btw guys, ublock and youtube have been in an arms race for the past few weeks so circulating filter lists is pretty useless since youtube gets wise to each one in a matter of days. what you should actually do is remove all your custom filters related to youtube and then force update your filter list whenever you see the anti-adblock pop up again

If youtube is getting past ublock origin and demanding that you turn off your adblocker, here is a solution from reddit which worked for me: https://old.reddit.com/r/uBlockOrigin/comments/1hir4z6/youtube_filtering_again/m30vhjh/ After you uncheck the "ublock filters - quickfixes" box, make sure to also click "apply changes."
if you recheck the "ublock filters - quickfixes" box and click "apply changes," youtube will be able to detect the adblocker again, so i guess for now don't do that.
Edit from one day later:
They removed the comment, here are the steps they gave: 1. Open uBlock Origin's settings. I click on the shield to the right of the url bar and then on the gear icon in the popup menu to get there.
2. Go to the "Filter lists" tab of the settings page. Not "My filters."
3. Find where it says "Built-in," underneath that it should say " "uBlock filters" with a number out of five. Next to that "x/5," there should be an arrow either facing to the right or downwards. If it's facing to the right, click it so it faces downwards and expands the list of Built-in filters.
4. In that list, you will find "uBlock filters - Quick fixes." Uncheck the box to the left of these words. When the box is unchecked, click "Apply changes" at the top of the page. Refresh any pages where youtube was whining about your adblocker, hopefully the message is gone and you're able to watch without any ads.
Yesterday when I first posted this, reactivating the quickfixes allowed youtube to detect the adblocker, but as of today it looks like they've updated the quick fixes so that you don't need to deactivate them to avoid youtube's detection. So, instead of deactivating and reactivating the quick fixes, you can probably just manually update them by clicking the clock icon to the right of where it says "quick fixes"

hey update on YT folks; ublock has put out a guide to getting adblock to work on there again, which i only found out today bc YT failed to work with ublock running.
you can find their post >here<, i highly recommend following the link in the post to submit complaints to YT about violating a policy their parent company follows as well, as we'll be in a perpetual cycle of bullshit if we dont.
EDIT: 10/18
I'm turning off reblogs for this post as the info is outdated! Please refer to the post >>HERE<< for how to fix your ublock. Please note this is for firefox only, Chrome has already fucked over adblockers entirely.

If you just use uBlock Origin and don't layer random other adblockers or rules on top, you should be fine on YouTube. Adding special rules yourself or multiple blockers is just making trouble for yourself.

handy diagram guide to the uBlock vs Youtube situation
Tumblr media
thought this might be useful, but mostly wanted to illustrate the sisyphean cycle we seem to be trapped in
uBlock Reddit thread :
(there's probably a new thread stickied at the top of the subreddit)
remember to follow all the instructions first! After that you will be trapped in the cycle above, but we're in it together! :)

me when companies try to force you to use their proprietary software
Tumblr media
anyway
Layperson resources:
firefox is an open source browser by Mozilla that makes privacy and software independence much easier. it is very easy to transfer all your chrome data to Firefox
ublock origin is The highest quality adblock atm. it is a free browser extension, and though last i checked it is available on Chrome google is trying very hard to crack down on its use
Thunderbird mail is an open source email client also by mozilla and shares many of the same advantages as firefox (it has some other cool features as well)
libreOffice is an open source office suite similar to microsoft office or Google Suite, simple enough
Risky:
VPNs (virtual private networks) essentially do a number of things, but most commonly they are used to prevent people from tracking your IP address. i would suggest doing more research. i use proton vpn, as it has a decent free version, and the paid version is powerful
note: some applications, websites, and other entities do not tolerate the use of VPNs. you may not be able to access certain secure sites while using a VPN, and logging into your personal account with some services while using a vpn *may* get you PERMANENTLY BLACKLISTED from the service on that account, ymmv
IF YOU HAVE A DECENT VPN, ANTIVIRUS, AND ADBLOCK, you can start learning about piracy, though i will not be providing any resources, as Loose Lips Sink Ships. if you want to be very safe, start with streaming sites and never download any files, though you Can learn how to discern between safe, unsafe, and risky content.
note: DO NOT SHARE LINKS TO OR NAMES OF PIRACY SITES IN PUBLIC PLACES, ESPECIALLY SOCAL MEDIA
the only time you should share these things are either in person or in (preferably peer-to-peer encrypted) PRIVATE messages
when pirated media becomes well-known and circulated on the wider, public internet, it gets taken down, because it is illegal to distribute pirated media and software
if you need an antivirus i like bitdefender. it has a free version, and is very good, though if youre using windows, windows defender is also very good and it comes with the OS
Advanced:
linux is great if you REALLY know what you're doing. you have to know a decent amount of computer science and be comfortable using the Terminal/Command Prompt to get/use linux. "Linux" refers to a large array of related open source Operating Systems. do research and pick one that suits your needs. im still experimenting with various dispos, but im leaning towards either Ubuntu Cinnamon or Debian.

Some blinkies inspired by a post by @aropride here.
Since starting this next semester at university I've been finding joy in life and really cutting back on quick dopamine fixes (I've found the main culprit has been social media). Deleting social media off of my phone and using my laptop instead to interact online has been instrumental to my finding my love of learning again. Making a boundary between me and the internet has helped me realize again that every action is an adventure. Don't waste all of your time scrolling and don't let corporations rob you of your privacy and attention spans.
peace & love to all

unskippable youtube ads for horror movies should be outlawed holy crap. i don't care that 'think of the kids' is considered a meme, nobody should be forced to get bombarded with blood curdling screams and disturbing flashing images with no warning when trying to watch parks and rec clips wtf
