I've discovered something cool.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Left: A 100+ year old medicine bottle that my parents dug up in their backyard when I was a kid. Their house is built where the old municipal dump was in the late 1800s, so there were lots of bottles like it buried in the dirt. Right: An ordinary wine glass from the 1990s. Both of these things have been sat on a shelf gathering dust for over a decade.
...Until recently, when I got my hands on a UV flashlight.
[Video description: The bottle and wine glass described above sit next to each other on a table, with the bottle on the left and glass on the right. They are lit from above by a normal incandescent bulb, though the bulb is out of shot. There is a plastic squeaking sound, and the light dims and turns off, leaving the screen dark. There is a click, and a UV flashlight turns on off screen, to the left. Under its light, the bottle glows yellow-green, and the wine glass glows blue. The light holds for a few seconds, then turns off with another click, leaving the screen dark until the video cuts out.]
They glow!!! (These two aren't the only ones either, just the ones with the brightest color.)
There are a lot of different things that can be mixed into glass to make it fluoresce under UV (including, perhaps most famously, uranium). After doing some research, I think I've pinned down these two.
The bottle has manganese, which was (ironically) used to remove the green tint from glass and make it colorless.

The wine glass has lead, which increases the reflectivity of glass to make it more sparkly (and can also leach off into your drink and give you lead poisoning. Whoops!)

As I'm sure you can tell I've been nerding out over this big time. I love when science is pretty :)

Last year the Museum of Vancouver had a retrospective of artist Tobias Wong's work, and they got the OK to make their own exhibition copies of Wong's Glass Chairs No. 1 & 2 (2002). Which the rest of this blog post is not necessarily suggesting you do, but the measurements and specs are there, and also the UV glue glass bonding Youtube tutorial.

Mystery Skulls Animated glitter jar, sandblasted with the MSA skull emblem and filled with pink glitter and glow powder in mineral oil.
[Video description: Small glass jar with black plastic screw-top lid, held between thumb and index finger. Size of jar is approximately 3.5cm total height and 1.5cm in diameter. The outer surface is sandblasted with two Mystery Skulls Animated skull emblems, on opposite sides of the jar. The jar is filled with a mix of pink glitter and glow powder suspended in clear mineral oil. First part of the video is a slow turnaround of the jar, showing off the sandblasted parts. The glitter and glow powder has settled to the bottom of the jar.
Second part of the video shows the jar being flipped and twisted around to get the the glitter and glow powder cascading down and swirling around. Third part of the video is the same twirling-about thing but in the dark, to show off the pink glow. End description.]

Sunglasses made of Murano glass, 18th-century AD, Venice, Italy.
Goldoni-type sunglasses with Mocenigo Coat of Arms.
Vascellari Collection (Italy) on display at The Murano Glass Museum.
Long before the rest of the world would discover the danger of ultra-violet rays in 1870, Venetian opticians were 120 years ahead of the curve.
The green colour of the lenses, conjured by the island's glassmakers in the bright hues of grass green, sea green and emerald green, wasn't simply a fashion statement but had a key functional role.
It has been later discovered that this colour serves as a powerful filter for UV rays, which are damaging to eye and skin health.
Thanks to Murano Glass, it became a true innovative jewel.
These emerald-colored sunglasses protected the eyes of the nobility and Commanders da Mar (of the sea) from the harmful glare of reflected light as they navigated the waters that surrounded them.
These sunglasses soon became widespread among Venetian high society.
One was almost certainly owned and used by Doge Alvise IV Giovanni Mocenigo (19 May 1701 - 31 December 1778), who was the leader of Venice from 1763 AD until his death on New Year's Eve, 31 December 1778 AD.
No one knows for sure why they were called "Goldoni" glasses, but it is assumed this was due to Carlo Goldoni (25 February 1707 – 6 February 1793), the famous Venetian playwright and librettist from the Republic of Venice.
