Summary: Thomas asks if he can learn to shoot a bow. Virgil says no.

A/N: This was supposed to be “Dee teaches Thomas archery” and it turned into “Virgil’s Trauma Hour,” my bad. Hope you enjoy it anyway! Takes place during the first year Virgil and Thomas live at Eden, so not long after Virgils' Promise, and a few years before Patton's Goodbye. -☕️

The first time Thomas asked if he could learn to shoot a bow, Virgil said no. Thomas pouted, he whined and complained and made a huge fuss, but Virgil refused to budge. Thomas spent the rest of that day shooting heated glares Virgil’s way, and Virgil pretended that the looks didn’t sting. 

The second time Thomas asked, he asked Virgil why he said no, and Virgil stammered out something about the strength it took to draw the bowstring back. Thomas accused Virgil of treating him like a baby before storming off into their cabin, and Virgil had a panic attack with his back against a tree. 

The third time, Thomas didn’t ask Virgil, he asked Dee, and Virgil bit his tongue so hard he tasted blood. Dee gave him a questioning look, but Virgil could barely even breathe, let alone speak. Dee’s face morphed into a frown, then he turned and said something to Thomas, though Virgil didn’t hear what it was over the blood rushing in his ears. 

“-rgil? Virgil!” 

Virgil felt a pressure on his arm and jerked away, but he relaxed by a notch when he saw Dee raise his hands and take a step back. 

“It’s okay, Virgil, breathe.”

Virgil managed a few deep breaths, and grimaced up at Dee. 

“I’m sorry, I–”

“Nothing to apologize for, Virge,” Dee said with a wave of his hand. “You wanna tell me what that was about though?” 

Virgil shrugged, stuffing his hands in his hoodie pockets. He glanced around, then frowned when he saw that Thomas and Remus, who’d been with them a moment ago, were no longer standing nearby. 

“I had Remus take Thomas down to the main hall,” Dee said. “Now c’mon V, what’s going on?” 

“Thomas has asked about archery before,” Virgil said. “I keep telling him no. I’m sorry he dragged you into it too, I–”

“Why?” Dee interrupted, tilting his head slightly to the side.

“What?” 

“Why tell Thomas he can’t learn archery? He’s old enough, if we make him a modified bow. It wouldn’t be much good at first, but he’d be able to use it to build up his strength eventually and–” 

“No!” Virgil said, shaking his head. “I...I mean...no, it’s...it’s not ‘cuz I don’t think he could do it, I just...” Virgil sighed, running a hand through his hair. 

“You just what?” Dee prompted, and Virgil looked away. 

“I don’t want him knowing what this feels like, Dee,” he said quietly. He reached up and touched the locket around his neck as he spoke, running a finger absently along the edge. 

“This?” 

“This!” Virgil repeated. “What we deal with every day; what we face down every time we have to go out there for supplies. I don’t want him to have to look into someone’s eyes and make that choice, because it isn’t a choice, how could it be, but you still have to pull the trigger and–” 

Virgil’s breath hitched, and he shook his head firmly, blinking back tears. 

“I don’t want him to ever have to carry this guilt around,” he said. “I don’t care if he hates me for it in the meantime.” 

There was a beat of silence, then Dee shook his head.

“Yes, you do.”

“Sorry?”

“You do care, Virgil, I can tell,” Dee said with a sigh. “I know you think you’re doing him a favor, but you’ve already lost everything else. Do you really want to lose your relationship with Thomas too?” 

“If it keeps him safe,” Virgil insisted, and Dee shook his head again. 

“Safe was out of the picture a long time ago, Virge. We both know it. We can hide behind the relative security we have here all we want, but the fact of the matter is that Eden is only somewhat safe in the first place because the people here know how to defend themselves.”

“Thomas shouldn’t have to defend himself!” Virgil exclaimed. “He’s nine, Dee, he’s a nine year old who watched his mom die in front of him!”

“And you’re an eighteen year old who shot your own mother to keep him safe,” Dee said gently. “None of this is fair, V. And as long as he’s here, everyone here will protect him, I promise you that. But he should still learn how to protect himself. Besides,” he added with a small smile. “He desperately wants to be useful around here; he’s a child who’s been forced into an adult’s world. He needs to feel like he has some kind of control in his life.” 

“You’re probably right,” Virgil admitted, ducking his head and wiping at his eyes. “But that doesn’t mean I have to like it.”

Dee shrugged. 

“Never said you did.” 

“...okay,” Virgil said finally. “You can teach him. But he’s not taking that thing with him on raids until he’s older.”

“That’s perfectly reasonable,” Dee agreed. 

“And...and I want to be there, for the lessons,” Virgil added. “So...so I can keep an eye on him.”

“Why Virgil, are you saying you don’t trust me?” Dee asked, his voice dripping with mock hurt. 

“Never,” Virgil deadpanned.

“You’d never say that, or you’d never trust me?”

“What do you think?” Virgil asked with a smirk, and Dee nudged his shoulder. 

“There’s that snark I missed so much.”

“There’s that pain in the ass I know,” Virgil shot back.

Dee laughed, and the tightness in Virgil’s chest loosened, if only a little bit. 

Thomas does not ask to learn to shoot a bow again.

He does ask Virgil to watch while he proudly notches his first arrow and pulls back on the string as hard as he can. His elbow is too high and he squints too much and the arrow lands three feet away from the makeshift targets by the lake, but Virgil still claps for him while Dee adjusts his form and murmurs instructions in his ear. 

Thomas notches his second arrow, and Virgil breathes.��

Things may not be fair, but Virgil thinks that they just might be okay anyway.

On Undertales of Sorrow and Redemption (UTSR)

There are currently over 150 Undertale AUs. Probably many more. So why make another?

Even with all of these AUs, there is something I’ve noticed. With a few exceptions like InvertedFate and Turning Point (formerly What it Once Was and originally Unexpecterchanged) (I know there are more, but I do not have time to list them all here!), the roleswap Aus I’ve come across all tend to use the same formula as Undertale; monster exits underground, monster is killed by human, monster dies on bed of flowers or smthn, monsters declare war on humanity, flower is injected with determination, flower becomes homicidal (though not always), etc. The same basic outline with a shifting of roles. 

And of course, this is fine! That’s the whole point of a roleswap Au. It’s fun to imagine these variations on Undertale that still stick to Undertale’s basic story. 

But I wanted to make something different. Something that abandoned the basic formula while still retaining some familiarity, like Turning Point. As such, not everything is changed. But it’s still quite different. 

This wasn’t my goal when I first conceived of this AU. This AU started as a Storyshift variation that was never actually intended to come to anything. Just a thing to imagine. (Yes, I know Storyshift variations are discouraged by the creators of the AU, but at that point they had not yet commented on that. Also, I didn’t have a tumblr and didn’t really know what tumblr actually was, so...) But the more I thought on it, the more it evolved, beyond anything I ever imagined it could be. The AU in its present form could not have existed before the release of Deltarune, as many features of Deltarune have been incorporated. 

There is no Flowey in this AU. There is no Flowey Role in this AU. I am not entirely certain that you can even call this a Roleswap AU. Some roles are disposed of entirely, or multiplied, and new ones are created. 

Don’t expect a comic in the near future. But then again, that’s not entirely out of the question, either. It all depends on what’s going on in my life. The story is not entirely thought out yet, and my drawing skills are a bit rusty (I’m out of practice...) But that doesn’t mean you won’t be getting anything! Before the comic comes worldbuilding, and I would be more than happy to share that with everyone!

So, what exactly is this AU? I’m afraid I can’t answer that just yet because of how I want the story to unfold. I want people to experience the events with the same knowledge of events as the main character. That is to say, very little. I will say, though, that this AU is very focused on the events of the past and its present repercussions, especially the personal effects on characters.

We're not dropping the fic, promise :) It's actually pretty much done, just stuck in stasis– the back three parts need editing but we just haven't really found the time. It's the hardest part of the process and takes the most collaboration. I'm transitioning to a new job and AJ's schedule with her new job is basically opposite of mine; I just moved and she's about to. IT'S A LOT.

On the bright side, my last day is in a few weeks and I'll be on vacation to my parents with nothing but time! I'm hoping that AJ and I will be able to get the fic out in its entirety by the end of the summer but please don't quote me on that lol.

*raises a glass of champagne at a holiday brunch* It’s not all that common for a work of art to compel me the way that Under The Same Roof has. That’s the power of beautiful, truly effective, and emotionally driven prose that easily finds a home in all of our hearts despite our varied life experiences.

It’s like hearing that one song at a concert that has a crowd of strangers belting in unison, and meeting every high note without fail. Going from softly singing lyrics in the intimate confinement of a bedroom to being in an arena filled with thousands, relating over those exact lyrics is a feeling that the outside world cannot replicate. It also showcases the similar shades of commonality that we all share if we observe close enough. That’s what makes various forms of art so magical, and imperative to our existence, in my opinion. It hones in on those little moments and serve as great remedies for us all, too. This series has exemplified that beautifully.

Reading UTSR took me on two simultaneous emotional journeys. The first journey had me immersed within every nook of its world; it’s effortless due to how delightfully descriptive and captivating the prose is. In gaining great familiarity with the characters, they quickly became people who I developed a fierce admiration for. The theme of growth is executed marvellously through out each part of the series, and it allows us to gain an intimate grasp of these characters. We follow the MC and Harry within these fixed environments in their lives, and observe how they come into their own and evolve in the most beautiful of ways as they tackle what life throws at them. In seeing their love story grow within various emotional arenas of new curiosity, warranted fear from outside forces and unwavering trust, the desire of wanting to protect them, and their loved ones was a feeling that soared through me.

The second journey I underwent was more so self-reflective. While I do find ways to be introspective with my engagement of art, there can be a speck of uncertainty in not knowing what will particularly tug at my heartstrings. I tend to take the trusting dive into the creative world before me, nonetheless: I begin to watch the film, press play to listen to that song, or in this case, read the four-part series.

I’ve experienced my fair share uncomfortable encounters with men throughout the years. Whether it be through them violating my personal space, shouting obscene cat calls, creepily following me in crowded spaces, aggressively confronting me for my headstrong, intersectional feminist beliefs or being crass if I rejected a simple suggestive/overtly sexual advancement. Then there’s instances of the beloved women in my life that had to report men who would: film/take photos of them in public without their consent, inhabit borderline stalker behavior, or attempt to sexually assault them. These are all agonizing instances people have either read, heard or experienced. In those moments, men fuel all of this inhumane energy roaring within themselves and wrongfully project it onto women; their twisted reasoning stemming from deeply rooted toxic masculine notions..and it’s unbearable to fathom at times, to say the least.

But reading about the MC struggling and overcoming the traumatic events she underwent was a great reminder of the strength that we innately have within us as women. And the unveiling of that power can happen in numerous ways: we can discover it on our own, or perhaps, we confide in people close to us who provide us the space to heal while being all the more nurturing, and our strength reveals itself there. While the MC receives immense care from many throughout the series, we witness an elaborate display of how attentive and warm Harry is. He exudes the temperament of someone you’d very much so want by your side in general since he’s just..perfect, obviously. There’s an important progression showcased with the MC - from being immersed in the undergoing of her traumatic circumstance to it gradually becoming a matter that no longer contains as pertinent of a physically and mentally hold on her. The ability to reach that state of mind is such a tranquil and integral place to eventually reach.

@harryonstage & @marlahey, this series means the world to me, as the two of you know. Thank you so much for providing us all with this incredible gem of fiction! I cooed, laughed, cried, had numerous moments of dramatically setting my phone aside after reading a great smut-filled moment and needing to take a deep breath aha..I can’t step foot into an elevator, or peek at children’s toys without my mind momentarily drifting to this lovely world, and I have zero issues with that! xx

I was trying to see what a-valorous-choice was up to lately an reread the Home series, and I found that I couldn't find the fic and all of Bee's accounts were gone, including her ao3. I understand the two of you were friends and you edited a few of her fics. Do you know what happened? I'm concerned for her safety. - 🐦

Hey! she’s okay, she’s switched to a new url and has decided to focus on writing original content rather than fanfiction. We’re still gonna write UTSR together, but other than that she’s gonna work on original fiction for the time being. Sorry for any worry!
