Being Disabled Sucks Ass

Scary time story after a short context story.

I have a few chronic illnesses. Most are very manageable and give no problem whatsoever. We have had a switch in insurance recently at my husband's job, which has made managing a few a little trickier. One in particular is showing itself to becoming more than a bit dangerous. You see, the co-pays of the insurance are astronomical, and they won't cover certain treatments or medications that WILL work for my illnesses. So, it's been a nightmare. And the one that is showing itself as becoming more dangerous? My cluster headaches/migraines.

Scary time story.

I took Mara with me to go pick up the husband. She loves a good ride, loves going to the restaurant as they all know her and love her, and it's a good time. Plus, I mind my Ps & Qs on the road 😊. So we get her daddy, and we are on the way back in the neighborhood (THANKFULLY!!!), when I feel a weird sensation along the left side of the back of my skull. Normally, it's the right side with the migraines. The clusters will be everywhere. It felt almost like a snap and a punch, all at once. I did slow down, and the husband asked if he needed to take over. My oh so lovely grasp of the English language when the brain is in these conditions -

He told me to pull over, which I was doing anyway.

So he got us home, made sure I took my headache meds, and laid down with me and Mara. My Dust Bunny kitty snuggled up with us, too.

So, yeah.

Was supposed to go Trooping today with the Mando Mercs and 501st today as a Handler on the USS Yorktown for their Trick or Treat event. The head still feels weird, and the left eye is twitchy. I think it best I stay home, even though I really want to go. I miss everybody, and really, really want to go to the dinner after.

So, yeah. Being disabled, especially in America, sucks.

Please send Joel, Frankie, all three Marcus', Magneto, and honestly? Just Joel. Really need the Papa Bear.

Alright lets talk about STALKER. Which faction(s) do you usually support? I've always been partial to Clear Sky. Former scientist determined to make right the sins of the past through pen and sword is just cool to me. Also have you played GAMMA? I'm having a ton of fun with it, but i understand how some think it deviates from the original vision/atmosphere of GSC.

Favourite faction? The SBU/USS in Call of Pripyat. I know they're technically the same as the Military faction in the first two games, but there was a significant change in their role and depiction when CoP was released. Come to think of it, this brings fascinating implications about the evolution going on in the Ukrainian society during the period when the Stalker trilogy was being made.

I do have a soft spot for charismatic villains, especially when they're not one-dimensional and there's some nuance in the writing, like the Cæsar's Legion in FNV, but this is not the case. There was nothing appealing about the Military in SoC and CoP. They were just an even more bland subfaction of the Bandits, even the special forces with their gorgeous Mi-24 helicopters.

Call of Pripyat feels different. I love Mayor Degtarev and the Operation fairline boys, I'd kill and die for them. The previous protagonists, Strelok and Scar, have that whining, loser mentality typical for Eastern Europe, best summed up by that one Werner Herzog's movie title: everyone against everyone, and God against us all. They don't really trust anyone and act mostly selfishly. Meanwhile, Degtarev and the Fairline crew went in the Zone for a serious mission since the Kiyv government finally got to get its shit together and try to solve the Zone problem once and for all. The final mission with the choppers flying in felt absolutely badass, like I was evacuating Mariupol. Besides, I loved the mercenary missions, standing up to some anglo boys doing shady business for rich western fucks. Sorry, Timmy the Merc. Not in my Zone, not in my Ukraine, I butchered them all with glee hehe

So yeah, at this point playing as the SBU is one huge power fantasy trip for me. But I have much love for the Clear Sky, too, because the devs wrote them absolutely loveable. Their goals and attitude towards the Zone are both reasonable and noble (Appolinian and solar, even), their armour is peak aesthetic (that camo!) and it's hard to not root for them as the underdog (total Renegade death). Moreover, their camp is the coziest place in the trilogy and I'd gladly live there, even pay the rent. Pic related. I still have this quiet hope they'll somehow return in S2.

Summary: Mari makes the final move in a battle

Emergency klaxons blared. Flashing red lights filtered through smoke. The temperature of the bridge continued to rise as various fires raged throughout.

And Mari ignored it all.

Evacuation orders had been given and she was the only one left aboard. Automated and assisted controls were down, so someone needed to remain, and that duty fell on the ship’s captain.

Mari pulled hard on the manual controls of the Shiny Racer, steering it toward the Paragon cruiser. Just a little more… a little more… She shoved the throttle forward, sending her ship’s last remaining engine into overdrive.

A new, collision warning alarm joined the cacophony. Mari ignored that as well.

Impact.

The only reason Mari was not thrown through the shattered windows at the front of the bridge was the fact that her mech’s feet were magnetically clamped to the floor.

She gritted her teeth and continued to hold the throttle and the Shiny Racer pushed the cruiser into the carrier next to it.

That should do it. Hopefully.

Mari raised her weapon and fired into the roof, then deactivated her mech’s magnets. Finally, as a tear slid down her cheek, she pressed one last button.

There was no countdown. The Shiny Racer’s engines exploded.

Mari’s mech punched up through the weakened spot in the roof as more explosions chained up the body of the ship. The first shockwaves began to buffet Mari's armor the mech held itself aloft.

Then, the first explosion rocked the cruiser. Their munitions room had obviously been damaged, which was why an inferno was now blasting toward Mari.

Time seemed to slow for a moment as she watched. However, she was unable to even complete a sigh of resignation before it was upon her.

"...ri?"

Mari's eyes snapped open.

"Oh thank the gods, she's alright."

"Kanan?" Mari blinked to clear her view.

Sure enough, her wife was leaning over her with a relieved expression.

"I'll give you three a moment." The medical officer said before departing.

"Three?" Mari muttered.

"I’m here as well." Mari heard the voice of Dia, her other wife, come through a nearby speaker.

It looked like Mari was in the medical bay of the Delphinus, Kanan’s submarine. But… how?

“When I heard about how the battle was going, I came as fast as I could.” Kanan explained, answering Mari’s silent question.

“But this was a contract with the URS, not the Empire.”

“I don’t care.”

Mari smiled as Kanan casually dismissed having likely broken protocol by not waiting for orders.

“And my mercs?”

“They’re fine. They’re aboard the USS Nijigasaki, enroute to the Bomberhead’s HQ.”

Mari made a mental note to thank Secretary Takasaki when next they spoke.

“What were you thinking, Mari?” Dia’t tone became stern. “This isn’t a game of chess. We don’t need to be sacrificing pieces.”

“It was just a ship.” Mari replied. “And I took out two of theirs, so it was a trade in our favor.”

“I wasn’t talking about the ship. And you know it.”

“We lose personnel every battle.” Mari stated solemnly. “I am just as prepared to give my life for our world as they are.”

As neither Dia nor Kanan responded, Mari continued.

“But you’re right, Dia. This isn’t chess. Chess is a zero-sum game. But we’re the only ones working with those rules while our opponents seem to have nigh infinite resources. We need to make sure everything we do hurts them more than it does us.”

“I would say that’s still a point in Dia’s favor.” Kanan finally spoke. “You can’t make any more moves once you’re off the board.”

“Fine, you two win.” Mari relented. “I’ll try not to sacrifice myself again. But,” her tone became more lighthearted, “having done so, I think I’ve earned myself a break. Why don’t the three of us spend a nice week together? Tsubasa or Sarah can take any contracts that come in while I’m gone.”

“I… could burn some PTO.” Dia said.

“Alright, I’ll set a course back to the home islands.” Kanan said.

Author's Note Continued: My initial thought for this scene was to have Dia comment that Mari was playing 4D chess and have the battle actually be in some sort of training. I was back and forth between the training being a simulation and live, and leaning toward the latter as I was a little amused by the idea of Mari sacrificing an entire ship to gain an advantage in training. Dia would be upset about the money wasted and Mari would point out that if the Paragon won, money wouldn't matter.

But I can say confidently that I am glad I took the live battle route and actual sacrificial maneuver on Mari's part, and said sacrifice being what Dia admonishes. That said, I did have to do a lot of trimming to get this to fit into 4k, so I'll probably expand this chapter when I add it into the UW extra chapter collection.

Rise of the Federation: A Choice of Futures by Christopher L Bennett

Now we are chugging along.

I had some time and decided to make a spreadsheet to track a few things. The first thing on the sheet was my budget which I said at the very beginning I was interested in tracking and the second is my overall completion in terms of owning and reading all the novels. If you are curious feel free to take a look here! You can see how incredibly many books there are and how little progress I have made 🫠.

The Author

Christopher L. Bennett is the author for this one, and this is our first time meeting him, but like many other authors we have encountered it won't be our last! It looks like he has written a profuse amount of Star Trek tie in media, not only this Rise of the Federation series that is next on the docket, but also TOS series, TNG series, and a series about the temporal war. He also has written for Marvel. I couldn't find much about his personal life except that he is a lifelong Ohioan.

The Summary

It seems like the Suliban are back? jk it's just a ploy to break up the Federation. The new Federation's tech doesn't all quite work together yet, but don't worry Dax(!!!) is on the case. Also transporters are a little wack and have caused some permeant damage to Archer and Reed. The crew of the Enterprise have split up now that the Enterprise is a museum exhibit. T'Pol captain's her own ship that is the USS Endeavor, the current flagship while Reed is given his own vessel, the USS Pioneer. Hoshi and Phlox stay with T'Pol while Reed takes on Travis as his number one.

The story cut back and forth between these two vessels and Archer at a diplomatic conference dealing with a species they have dubbed "The Mutes" who have no voices nor eyes. Oh there are also evil Orion ladies and their servant Garos who are also plotting to take down the Federation. The Mutes have been disabling and stealing ships and people are...pretty mad about it. The Federation makes a task force to deal with them, hopefully peacefully, that involves the Endeavor, a few Andorian ships, and Garo's ship. Garos and one Andorian ship respond to a distress call sent out by people disabled by the Mutes. Garos mercs the Andorian ship and says the mutes have done it.

T'Pol investigates and finds some inconsistencies but no proof. She then has her own run in with the Mutes and they manage to capture two of them to bring aboard, along with the other ships taking their own hostages. They make some observations about their communication style and purpose. T'Pol mindmelds with one of them to learn more. They communicate using infrared and electrical signals, and are mainly just curious scientists. They see most humanoids as less than because they cannot communicate with them in the same way. They decide to return all the hostages and send T'Pol and Hoshi back with them in order to continue to facilitate communication. T'Pol and Hoshi establish contact and begin negotiations while Trip and Archer uncover an Orion scheme to influence Federation members into more aggressive postures.

Oh while all that was happening Malcom and his crew were falling into a planet, but don't worry they were saved by sentient sky whales and they solved the combining different society's tech problem :)

My Thoughts

I think this one knocked what a Star Trek novel should be out of the park! It was a space mystery tied into bigger ideas about politics and ethics, where our beloved characters have to make some hard decisions to do the right thing. It read more like a plot line of an episode or two and that format is incredibly digestible, and I think what made it so successful.

The characters felt perfectly reasonable and in character about all the decisions that they made. T'Pol especially it was cool to see in the captains chair. There was a fun side story about her getting along with her Andorian number one. They learn to trust each other and put aside feeling from their races previous war. Thanien was a cool character I am sure we will get more of. There was a lot of fun emotional moments that felt really right to me. Reed learning how to unwind a little bit and show his feelings, Hoshi going to T'Pol for emotional regulation, and Travis helping two young ensigns figure themselves out. I really enjoyed Bennett's writing style. It was descriptive without being flowery and over the top. I also just felt the plot very well thought out. We did an appropriate amount of jumping between POVs. He is also the first one I think to really get Trip right as a spy! His version of spy!Trip is a little banged up and broken in a way that made his spy business more believable. I am sure we will get more of this. Also we meet Kirk's great grandparents? I think? It was so fun and cool and subtle. I love when the novels are given the latitude to do that.

At the end the author in the acknowledgements laid out all the references from the series that he made which I thought was super cool! He even credited the writers who wrote the episodes that he stole stuff from. He also acknowledged that this section of the timeline is murky and there are other novels with it going differently which I thought was very reflective of him to acknowledge that that is an aspect that makes the novels fun.

I give this one 9/10 stars! Really just good old fashion Star Trek fun. The next one is Rise of the Federation: Tower of Babel by Christopher Bennett, let's see if it is as good!

Raul nods along to the suggestion of course from Hunk. People that lived by and were already familiar with the area and could pinpoint changes were the best bet they had for real experiences to hold these readings up to.

And readings couldn't give them information on how the actual living landscape had changed since the bomb.

"Sounds good to me, I never got to know anyone in Raccoon or Arklay."

He wasn't around for that long. His first stint in UBCS only ended because of the pilot shortage, which made his transfer to USS both unusual and remarkable.

Downtime didn't really exist for him since, while working for Umbrella.

But reminiscing on being overworked was cut short by Hunk's revelation on how they found Ahab, and the relation to his latest project.

"Cloning, huh? And with the same approximate skill set as that merc?" he hums, "So, trying to get her outfitted with a familiar kit so she can run with us wolves. Not a bad idea, I was a little concerned we'd have to start from scraps. Well, we kind of are, but you know what I mean."

Brick awakens, and curves his back stretching and extending his forelegs first, then backlegs, cantering figure eights between the old mercenaries' legs.

"Soon," he says, "I'll go flying down for restock, maybe take this one for his vet check-up. You want to go with? Faster than driving."

"We'll go in person. Used to have friends in that area too. If anybody's still around, that'll be our best bet for current ground information."

His contact from much older days, Eric, lived in the valley res. Raccoon was an Umbrella company town neighboring it. Hunk had been pulled out there a handful of times before the place went up in smoke. After the fallout, he kept in touch with Eric sparingly, letters and postcards with no return addresses. No reason to have involved a deeply uninvolved guy in the secession.

"I'll call the number and see who's still around."

He still had a landline number floating around his memories somewhere.

The laser cutter was still buzzing in the background, every now and then changing the lighting in the room through the view.

"Ahab's got the face of an old merc I knew. Literally. Heard about cloning projects, some even successful in Umbrella facilities, but nothing viable long-term. Seemed like she got some of the same kind of training as the original. Started drafting her a weapon. Gonna need to start working with it in order to function."

He gestured behind him to the shell of the Hookshot.

"That and I need to go into town and send out an order. You flying down soon?"

now that I know “Stock” (Unnamed Background Vulcan) exists, i rewatched the first 3 episodes of LOW to record every time he appears (unless it’s like... a static shot of the back of his head) then, as I watched the 4th episode, I recorded the clips as I went. (I’ll make a comp when all 10 episodes of season one have aired)

see when i first saw people talking about this character, i assumed that he appeared in one episode. so far, he’s been in 3/4 episodes (1, 3, 4) - he’s definitely reoccurring. 

things i’ve noticed:

stock is extremely expressive, especially in the first episode.

there is ANOTHER male vulcan red-shirt ensign, not to be confused with stock, who becomes a zombie in that episode. stock has a small pointy noise, whereas this ensign has a longer, rounder nose. also note the different ear shape and lighter hair. i don’t think this character appears again, at least so far. maybe the phaser was set to kill?

In episode 4, there is yet ANOTHER male red-shirt who is part of the USS Merced crew (rather than the Cerritos). This one appears to have two pips on his uniform, which would make him a Lieutenant. He also has thicker eyebrows, a different hair style, and pointier ears, so I think that this is actually a romulan? I did mistake him for Stock at first, though - because this blurry image is all we get.

I’m back on mobile & kinda sleepy BUt here’s a few details off the top of my head

- I’m leaning more toward the second option for Vana getting her symbiont, simply bc it’d be funny for a symbiont to unexpectantly find itself joined to a wreckless adrenaline junky who’s idea of a good time is to race through an asteroid field avoiding phaser fire & dodging starfleet authorities. It’d just be “dude u have GOT to chill out,”

- I’m not 100% sure on whether Kana exists in the same timeline as Vana & Nethma, since I see Star Trek Online as an entirely separate timeline to everything else. She’d still be a cadet or MAYBE an ensign in the main timeline. In STO she’s the captain of an AOS-timeline federation dreadnaught called the USS Wyoming. She doesn’t have much time for exploring & good traditional starfleet activities since the plot of the game pushes her through several wars, so she’s a pretty exhausted soldier really.

- Nethma & Vana might get along based on their mutual dislike for the federation. Vana sees the federation as too self important, stuck on its high horse, & a soft empire.

Nethma dislikes them bc I’m convinced that, despite what they say, there are some entire species that they just Will Not Trust, including orions. Nethma, as a 16 y/o escaping the slave trade, sought asylum at earth but was denied bc conspiracy theorists within the federation decided she was a syndicate spy. It wasn’t her first option but she went to the Klingon Defence Force next, & offered work in exchange for protection from the syndicate, which was eventually accepted. She worked with them for 10 years & left to work as a merc after paying off her debts.

Nethma MIGHT be involved in the very races that Vana takes part in. Still working it all out tbh

ok first of all "uss wyoming" for a dreadnought DELIGHTS me im so glad you brought that into existence. i also totally agree that giving vana a symbiont (knowing how she is) would be really funny and also interesting!! also jeez i feel bad for nethma thats a hell of a backstory i hope she's doing ok :( and if you decide/have decided that nethma is involved in the races with vana i think that would be really cool!!! they should race against each other or something ...

"ouch! Owww-- holy sweet mother of fuck---"

Winter paused briefly, lowered the phaser rifle and looked over his head, an eyebrow raised at the thumping and swearing. He complained, briefly, that he too wanted to be part of the landing party, that they would benefit his stealth better than Damen's, still he had been left on the ship and what else could he do but wait and polish his weapons? At least he seemed to have company now.

"Jesus damn-- it wasn't that fucking small last time---"

Winter chuckled lightly and shook his head, getting ready to receive his clandestine visitor.

"two months in a different ship and you put on enough weight to make the crawling difficult, hawk."

He said and a moment later a blond head appeared from the entrance of the tube over his head.

"you calling me fat?!" he looked outraged, he sounded outraged, but there was no immediate danger in his eyes. Not that he could be a danger to winter anyway.

"coming down? Or you stuck your fat bird ass up here?" winter joked again, arms crossed. He watched as he grabbed the sides of the tube and easily rolled down landing with a quiet thud. he didn't looked any fatter than he remember, it could be the tubes being actually smaller than the ship he had been on during his previous mission, one of the newest ships led by non other than captain Rogers. He remembered him, from before, before pierce took him out of the stasis chamber, he remembered and forgot and remembered again. And pierce called most those memories a liability.

"smart-ass." the man called back, smirking, he brushed a bit of imaginary dust from his black pants and sat down in front of him on the metal floor. "I missed here." he said after a moment, then they fell back in a comfortable silence again, their breaths slowly matching.

"how was it, saving the universe?" winter asked after a while, Clint scooted closer, brushed his cheek against his leg and waited until the metal hand was gently scraping his head.

"tiring." he mumbled, eyes closed, resting against the leg. "keeping everything regular, following captain righteousness and all. Hell. I'd rather throw myself in a black hole than hear him and stark bicker again. Can't they just go and hook up? It worked like a charm for our captain."

Winter let out a small laugh, his hand finding a spot over his head that made him moan softly.

"not saying they should marry straight away, just... Drop in one room, have some steamy sex and stop bickering for the day." he added looking up.

"you saying steamy sex is the solution to problems?"

"If said problem is pining back and forth and bicker even harder while trying to save the universe then yes, it is. - he stopped a second and dropped his head back on winter's legs. - sorry. I didn't come here to complain about captain righteousness and his needs of getting laid, sorry."

"oh, I believe you came here exactly for that, and I'm letting you complain all you wish. You know, hawk, the captain was complaining about how he always has to give you up to admiral fury." he admitted after a while.

It wasn't the complete truth, winter had been the forst to complain, and loudly, about that. About how fury dropped by everytime he had to move the uss avengers for something and claimed his so called rights over his hawk. Anyone else, just his hawk. That was why pierce never risked to put him on the Chair, messing up with his memories would give out too much, and fury already had a long list of suspicious against him and his elite team.

"oh, is he?" he didn't sound too surprised, he heard the captain complain about fury before, muttering under his breath about his ways and his choices. Winter hummed in response. "if it makes it any better, I like here more. I like you all more than them. There i only truly like Natasha, and because she's like me."

"a spy?"

"a former merc. You know I'm the one who brought her in and convinced her to join the academy, right?"

"you were a bounty hunter, if I remember correctly." winter pointed out and he waved a hand.

"same thing, let's not go for technicalities."

"a bounty hunter working for romulans."

"I had friends there. I still do, and they're good fellas. A bit trigger happy, but here, look at you." winter laughed again, lowered his head and placed a kiss on his hair.

"you, hawk, seem to have a type."

"I never slept with them. Okay, maybe once. Or twice. Look, romulan ale is quite intoxicating okay? And Galán is not exactly bad looking." he gave up as winter broke into another laughter.

"it's good to have you back, hawk." he whispered in the end, arms closing around his shoulders and placing his chin on top of his head. "please don't leave again." remained unsaid, but clear and loud enough between them.

Danse has an inferiority complex when it comes to his height; he’s very defensive about his size when he’s out of power armor, and now the SS can’t help but tease him for it.

When the SS learns that Danse can’t actually dance, they insist on teaching him. He was worried it would be the sort of dancing he’d once seeen Hancock do in the Third Rail, but it ended up being something entirely different. The SS called it ‘slow dancing.’

MacCready taught him to dab and now the merc is rolling in the dirt and laughing his ass off.

After a sincere (if not awkward) apology, Nick forgives Danse’s past insults. Now, they're very cautiously bonding over their synthetic nature.

The SS insists that Danse needs a first name. Now, Sanctuary has a whole blackboard devoted to suggestions, with check marks, crossed out ideas, comments...

The SS keeps teasing him for his vocabulary.

Danse didn’t expect to fall in love with anyone, much less with the nameless civilian who just kicked down the door to his compound and started mowing down ferals.

Who better than a pre-war soldier to teach him about pre-war strategies? Danse looks like a little kid, fascinated with these new ideas.

He always calls the SS a civilian, but when they stumble across the USS Constitution, the Lookout scans him and identifies him as a pre-war soldier. Now Danse is scolding the SS for keeping it from him. “I didn’t know when to bring it up!” / “I’ve been calling you ‘civilian’ for weeks!
