State Ship Series: USS Maine
There have been three ships commissioned named after the state of Maine in the US Navy. The state was admitted into the United States on March 15, 1820.
USS Maine (ACR-1), armored cruiser, later second rate battleship. Commissioned in 1895 and lost in 1898 in an explosion that destroyed the forward half of the ship. Later "yellow journalism" or misrepresenting the story of her explosion to be caused by a mine, partially leading to the Spanish-American War.
In 1910, it was decided to build a coffer dawn around the wreck so it documented for another investigation, to proper interment in Arlington National Cemetery of the bodies still inside and refloat the wreck as it had become a navigation hazard in Havana Harbor.
The wreck was towed out to Gulf of Mexico and scuttled. Only 66 bodies were recovered, with 229 instill interred inside.
Later investigations found the explosion was caused by a design flaw and not by Spanish mine. The coal bunker was placed right next to the powder magazine, sharing a bulkhead. When a coal fire started in the coal bunker, the heat ignited the powder causing the explosion.
USS Maine (BB-10), Maine Class, predreadnought battleship, in commission from 1902 to 1920. Scrapped in 1922.
USS Maine (BB-69), Montana Class, Battleship, cancelled before construction was started.
USS Maine (SSBN-741), Ohio Class, nuclear powered ballistic missile submarine, commissioned from 1994 to present.

From beneath the sea....
PACIFIC OCEAN (February 12, 2020) -- An unarmed Trident II (D5LE) submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) launches from submerged United States Navy Ohio-class ballistic missile submarine USS Maine (SSBN 741) off the coast of San Diego, CA.
USS Maine (SSBN 741)
The successful missile launch demonstrated the readiness of USS Maine’s (SSBN 741) strategic weapon system and crew following the submarine’s recently-completed major overhaul.
When armed, the Trident II missile pictured here emerging from beneath the sea can carry up to 14 massive long-range independently- (and very precisely-) targeted nuclear weapons....and is a key element of the U.S. strategic nuclear triad....strengthening U.S. strategic deterrence.
(In plain language....these missiles are so powerful, accurate and nasty....they are designed to prevent war....and almost demand peace.)

Rob Garis, commandant, USS Maine (or).

Recently declassified documents have released stating the US did build one Montana Class Battleship, the USS MAINE (BB-69)!
Commissioned in March 1945 in complete secrecy at an unknown Navy Yard, she built to counter the Yamato Class. Two other keels were laid but scraped soon after.
The declassified documents state she was steaming to the Okinawa on April 1, 1945 to protect the fleet from the IJN Yamato, but arrived after she was sunk on April 7.
Fearing the Japanese Navy more Yamato Class Battleships or A-150 class Battleships, MAINE was kept in the Pacific Ocean, away from ports where it feared spies might try to sabotage her. She was only allowed to refuel at sea and at night with only the bare minimum of lighting turned on. The crews of the fleet oilers and replenishment ships were never told which ship they were transferring supplies to.
After the war, the men who worked and served on her threatened with treason if they disavow any knowledge of the ship. It was feared the Soviets would try to learn some of her secrets so her existence was covered up and she wasn't allowed to be placed in reserves. Instead, she continued to patrol the oceans and only allowed to enter covert locations at night for refits and maintenance.
When the US entered the Korean War, she provided ground support and bombarded shore batteries in the evening and night time. Most of the men who saw her were told she was one of the Iowas and they have redacted the parts about when any of them started to question why the ship had 4 turrets when the Iowas have 3. She was decommissioned and placed in mothballs in redacted location on April 1, 1961.
The US Navy reactivated her and USS New Jersey (BB-62) in April 1968 for the Vietnam War. USS New Jersey was a cover for anyone who saw USS Maine and any photos of her were photoshopped to look like New Jersey when released to the media.
Unlike USS NEW JERSEY (BB-62), MAINE was kept in service after 1969 and she went on patrols in the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean. The USSR, not happy about this and not having anything to counter the mighty ship, began construction of the Kirov Class Guided Missile Cruisers.
The US in response, began refitting and modernizing her in April 1979 and was completed in 1980. The plans and lessons learned to upgrade her were applied to the 4 Iowas when they were reactivation in the 1980's.
During this time period, much of what happened hasn't been declassified yet, but some have theorized she played a similar role to the last two times the Iowas were active when she was.
When the Iowas were retired in the early 1990's, a Ohio Class Ballistic Missile Submarine, USS MAINE (SSBN-741), was commissioned in 1994 to be her cover. That's where the declassified documents end, her current location or status is unknown. There are rumors she has undergone another modernization but most likely, she is in mothballs somewhere.
