Ubaldo — Casa (Urpa i Musell)

Ubaldo, the project of Ebro Delta musician Andreu G. Serra living in Brussels, is one of a couple different offshoots of his creative capacity. Bimbo Picasso is a punk inspired guise and his collaboration with Kiran Leonard, Or Sobre Blau, is an experimental dual guitar outlet, full of brambling free passages. Casa, “house” or “home” in Spanish and Catalan, is the third full-length as Ubaldo, and it is an album full of hedging, round feedback tones, breathy and melodic vocals and sustained or gritty, plucked strings.

Casa was recorded as a sound diary to Serra’s acclimation to his new home in Brussels, following a stretch of life embracing nomadic living, moving from place to place over the past few years. During this new frame of life, Serra also started renovating a friend’s home located on the city’s outskirts, clearing gardens, restoring crumbling walls, and attempting to heal diseased trees. These manual, restorative processes, done out of love and self-health, along with digesting the meaning of creating a home after years of constant travel, seem to have deeply inflected the recordings that Serra created during this period.

The structures of these songs are loosely defined, often drifting into one another, and sharing broader ideas. Bellowing feedbacks direct the melodic path of many tracks, like “Ma germanes,” like developing still lives. On other tracks, Serra lets his sporadic but gentle guitar playing establish a tone, as he does on “Mos falten persones co Xuanill,” sometimes pairing his guitar with reverberated, vaguely folky sung vocals of his own, like on “Le gui (I else que no volen veure)”. Serra creates fragile, growing songs, displaying an ability to handle a wider range of modes.

Casa, at times, bridges the warmth of Marissa Anderson recordings with those of more ambient and electronic affairs, like Stars of the Lid. It approaches a middle ground, or more accurately a shared element, of the polar opposites Serra displays a passion for with his Ubaldo project. It can be hard to find common ground in separate elements of life, but in emotionally challenging moments it becomes possible due to extended moments of reflection. By inverting pre-existing perceptions, you often find a different meaning. Casa is the sound of Serra realizing the power of those reflective moments and finding a way to capture it in resonant ways.

Reviews 044: Carlos Maria Trindade / Nuno Canavarro

Yet another essential re-issue, this time the first ever vinyl repress of fourth world masterpiece Mr. Wollogallu by Carlos Maria Trindade (CMT) and Nuno Canavarro (NC). Barcelona based Urpa i musell have lovingly resurrected this esoteric Portuguese gem with a fantastic vinyl pressing, the original sleeve art and poetry now transformed into a poster, and a lovely set of liner notes by the artists’ friend Mia. B, including further pictures and even a studio layout schematic. Nerdy and incredible! Originally released on União Lisboa in 1991, this is an adventurous, eclectic, and near perfect slice of new age, featuring compositions by CMT on the A-side, and NC on the flip, though both players show up on each other’s tracks. CMT’s side skews folkier and sunnier, whereas NC’s feels darker and perhaps more introspective, but they both work together to create a panoramic ambient journey.

Carlos Maria Trindade / Nuno Canavarro - Mr. Wollogallu (Urpa i musell, 2018 Re-Issue) “We know the air is unfit to breath, our food is unfit to eat!”…crash into joyous bass arps and twinkling tones sparkling like starlight. So begins “The Truth”, which otherwise features epic X-Files synth refrains interspersed with carnivalesque passage of hypnotic and chiming repetition, including some soft and triumphant trombone. “Guiar” strongly evokes Penguin Cafe Orchestra with its nimble layers of acoustic guitar intertwined with cascading and peaceful showers of piano. Subtle yet lively percussive accents dance through the mix and everything is eventually joined by mesmerizing vocalizations in bright angelic tones, presaging the ethno-classicism of Troels Hammer. “Em Bou-saada” reprises some of the melodies and phrases from “Guiar”, but everything feels stumbling and slightly broken, as if the original song has been fractured into ambient shards that are only held together by a thin thread. “Plan” is perhaps the stand-out of this side, as it is built around a gorgeous nylon string guitar refrain accompanied by placid glowing chords. NC colors the background with romantic woodwinds and cinematic strings, and CMT glides across the fretboard in blissed out tranquil soloing,…summertime folk for lazy days by the river. Elsewhere, “Mecanismos de Corda” weaves koto and harp loops into a hallucinatory tapestry overlaid with dreamy fm synthesis and glassy pads, and “X. Pect” is a soulful vibraphone meditation, sometimes feeling like a religious hymn, other times drifting along with a spiritual jazz flavor. The A-side ends with “West”, a CMT solo piano journey the moves from jaunty blues passages to more melancholic sections. It’s very powerfully played and once again seems to reference PCO.

The focus of the B-side is “Blu Terra”, the sole track written by NC that includes CMT as well. A fourth world intro of otherworldly voices, chiming loops, and ethno-flutes leads to cerebral new age arpeggiations on mbira. The melodies are hypnotic and affecting, the percussion is gentle yet active, and brass tones and voices float through the ether, creating a mystical ambient odyssey. The track builds in urgency as it progresses, with layers of synth sequencing woven into the mbira webs and wide-eyed spacey melodies floating overhead. “S. Louise” is a strange come down from the “Blu Terra” bliss out, mixing abstracted high frequency bell tones, woozy synthesizers, snippets of dialogue, and alien flugelhorn. There is also “Aelux” with its fragile wisps of organ over a barely there hand percussion pulse. Hard to identify samples drift through the mix alongside faraway aquatic tones, and some semblance of a melodic refrain emerges, but is just as liable to disappear, vaporous and shimmering. “Ven 5” is a dreamy piece of minimalism, with glassy vibraphones telling some dark lullaby. Ominous cellos join the mesmeric float, lonely and emotional, and eventually counterpoint mallet melodies, dubby delay effects, and ghostly theremin sounds result in a soft climax. “Segredos M.” recalls the minimalist melodics from “Ven 5”, only now including musicbox and mbira with the vibraphone patterns. Snippets of orchestral majesty float by occasionally, and background pianos add further harmonization with cinematic and dreamy theremin effects soaring overhead. And there is a beautiful coda of solo nylon stringed guitar…a warm breath of fresh air after the cold and sad atmospherics. This wonderful journey ends on “Antica / Burun”. The melancholic piano and deeply affecting vocal loops recall nothing so much as those ambient codes of GY!BE or Silver Mt. Zion, but here distinguished somewhat by the expressive and exotic vocalizations.

One of the highlights of my day definitely was when i was in the room recovering for anaesthesia (in spanish is URPA idk what's the english name) and they were finally gonna led me to my room and stuff and they were getting off stuff of me and at some point I had to push myself up so they could get something that was behind me or something like that. As per usual, I start to vibrate, which is what I do whenever I'm tired and have to do anything that requires strength and something that until this afternoon I deemed perfectly normal. Apparently it's not, cause the nurses looked at me and one of them asked me if I was cold lol

I replied with 'no, I just start shaking when i'm weak, it doesn't have to do with the surgery' and they looked back SO CONCERNED

Nama saya Pramatya Rizqi Anindita, biasa dipanggil Tya. Saya telah menjadi mahasiswa ITB sehingga otomatis saya termasuk ke dalam anggota biasa KM ITB. Saat ini, saya baru memasuki tingkat 2 di jurusan Teknik Industri.

           Keluarga Mahasiswa ITB merupakan lembaga terpusat yang mampu menampung seluruh mahasiswa dan dapat mengoordinasikan lembaga di dalamnya. KM ITB tidak berada di bawah rector sehingga memiliki otonomi penuh dalam penentuan kehidupan organisasinya Pengenalan kemahasiswaan ITB telah dilakukan pada OSKM yaitu saat saya baru menjadi mahasiswa ITB, kemudian dilanjutkan pada saat Online Onderweijs pada masa transisi dari semester 2 ke semester 3. KM ITB menyediakan banyak wadah pengembangan diri dan pergerakan yang dapat dijadikan pilihan proses aktualisasi diri mahasiswa. Saya menyadari bahwa terdapat banyak wadah yang disediakan oleh KM ITB untuk mengembangkan diri mahasiswa di ITB. Hal itu diwujudkan dalam HMJ, UKM, dan kepanitiaan lainnya. Buktinya pun sudah banyak. Banyak orang inspiratif yang berhasil berkembang dari wadah-wadah tersebut. Mereka berhasil menyeimbangkan antara kegiatan akademik dan non-akademik dengan aktif berkontribusi dalam wadah KM ITB. Hal tersebut membuka pikiran saya untuk aktif ikut serta dalam kegiatan KM ITB agar dapat mendapat ilmu, mengembangkan skills, dan menjadi orang yang lebih bermanfaat bagi masyarakat.

           Hal ini mulai saya lakukan semenjak saya memulai perkuliahan di ITB. Saya bergabung pada salah satu Unit Kegiatan Mahasiswa (UKM) yang berada di naungan KM ITB, yaitu Unit Renang dan Polo Air (URPA). Saya pun sempat mengikuti kepanitiaan Aku Masuk ITB (AMI) dan sangat tertarik untuk mengikuti kepanitiaan lain baik terpusat maupun tidak. Saat ini saya sedang mengikuti rangkaian PABRIK MTI, yang merupakan orientasi jurusan Teknik Industri sebagai bagian dari kaderisasi KM ITB.

           Harapannya, wadah yang telah dan akan saya masuki dapat menjadi tempat berproses dan berkembang untuk saya. Saya pun berharap dapat lebih berkontribusi, aktif, dan bertanggung jawab akan tugas-tugas yang sedang dan akan saya jalani nantinya demi keberlangsungan kegiatan organisasi.  Akhir kata, saya harap dengan mengikuti wadah-wadah tersebut saya dapat menjadi orang yang dapat bermanfaat bagi lingkungan dan masyarakat.
