Passing Gleams
In the chaos of sentiments and passions which defend a barricade, there is a little of everything; there is bravery, there is youth, honor, enthusiasm, the ideal, conviction, the rage of the gambler, and, above all, intermittences of hope.
One of these intermittences, one of these vague quivers of hope suddenly traversed the barricade of the Rue de la Chanvrerie at the moment when it was least expected.
“Listen,” suddenly cried Enjolras, who was still on the watch, “it seems to me that Paris is waking up.”
Tumblr media
It is certain that, on the morning of the 6th of June, the insurrection broke out afresh for an hour or two, to a certain extent. The obstinacy of the alarm peal of Saint-Merry reanimated some fancies. Barricades were begun in the Rue du Poirier and the Rue des Gravilliers. In front of the Porte Saint-Martin, a young man, armed with a rifle, attacked alone a squadron of cavalry. In plain sight, on the open boulevard, he placed one knee on the ground, shouldered his weapon, fired, killed the commander of the squadron, and turned away, saying: “There’s another who will do us no more harm.”
He was put to the sword. In the Rue Saint-Denis, a woman fired on the National Guard from behind a lowered blind. The slats of the blind could be seen to tremble at every shot. A child fourteen years of age was arrested in the Rue de la Cossonerie, with his pockets full of cartridges. Many posts were attacked. At the entrance to the Rue Bertin-Poirée, a very lively and utterly unexpected fusillade welcomed a regiment of cuirrassiers, at whose head marched Marshal General Cavaignac de Barague. In the Rue Planche-Mibray, they threw old pieces of pottery and household utensils down on the soldiers from the roofs; a bad sign; and when this matter was reported to Marshal Soult, Napoleon’s old lieutenant grew thoughtful, as he recalled Suchet’s saying at Saragossa: “We are lost when the old women empty their pots de chambre on our heads.”
These general symptoms which presented themselves at the moment when it was thought that the uprising had been rendered local, this fever of wrath, these sparks which flew hither and thither above those deep masses of combustibles which are called the faubourgs of Paris,—all this, taken together, disturbed the military chiefs. They made haste to stamp out these beginnings of conflagration.
They delayed the attack on the barricades Maubuée, de la Chanvrerie and Saint-Merry until these sparks had been extinguished, in order that they might have to deal with the barricades only and be able to finish them at one blow. Columns were thrown into the streets where there was fermentation, sweeping the large, sounding the small, right and left, now slowly and cautiously, now at full charge. The troops broke in the doors of houses whence shots had been fired; at the same time, manœuvres by the cavalry dispersed the groups on the boulevards. This repression was not effected without some commotion, and without that tumultuous uproar peculiar to collisions between the army and the people. This was what Enjolras had caught in the intervals of the cannonade and the musketry.
Tumblr media
Moreover, he had seen wounded men passing the end of the street in litters, and he said to Courfeyrac:—“Those wounded do not come from us.”
Tumblr media
Their hope did not last long; the gleam was quickly eclipsed. In less than half an hour, what was in the air vanished, it was a flash of lightning unaccompanied by thunder, and the insurgents felt that sort of leaden cope, which the indifference of the people casts over obstinate and deserted men, fall over them once more.
The general movement, which seemed to have assumed a vague outline, had miscarried; and the attention of the minister of war and the strategy of the generals could now be concentrated on the three or four barricades which still remained standing.
The sun was mounting above the horizon.
An insurgent hailed Enjolras.
Tumblr media
“We are hungry here. Are we really going to die like this, without anything to eat?”
Enjolras, who was still leaning on his elbows at his embrasure, made an affirmative sign with his head, but without taking his eyes from the end of the street.

Our President And The Issue Of EJKs In The Philippines by Santino Fernandez
"Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely-Lord Acton”
These words to me are important as they reflect a huge societal issue happening right now in The Philippines. This issue has to deal with the police and how they abuse their power towards the people of my country.  It is no secret that Police Brutality is running rampant in some countries right now. Just last May, America experienced a great tragedy with the murder of George Floyd.  The cop killings in the US are rampant but in the Philippines they are as bad if not worse.
Ever since 2016 our president Rodrigo Duterte has been on the so called “War on Drugs.”    In this campaign he promised to rid the country of dangerous substances by the end of his  six year term. However all it has done is create more damage  as this so called “Drug War” targets the poor and less fortunate.  In the years since Duterte has taken office he has implemented Extra Judicial Killings also known as EJKs in the country.   An EJK is when the government sanctions the killing of people or drug addicts  in the country as long as there is evidence.  There is no due process any more and these addicts are not taken to a court of law. These addicts are shot in the streets in cold blood without any hesitation or remorse.
Since the implementation of EJK in our country there have been up to 5000 deaths caused by the EJKs. However human rights groups say it is way beyond 12,000 already.  Human rights groups have been siding with the people because it is a violation of democracy. According to our democratic law everyone deserves their day in court but Duterte prefers to not do that and instead kill the offenders.  In a direct quote from the man himself he says that he will protect the cops who commit the EJKs. Duterte says- “That’s our deal. When I said that you go and destroy the drug industry, destroying means destroying, including human life.” He said police officers who have faced difficulties in carrying out their duties should never stress over it as he says  "I'll take care of you.”
This has caused many corrupt cops to abuse the power and protection given by the president. Because of this protection the deaths caused by the EJKs have risen rapidly claiming the lives of men, women, and children alike.  One of the many victims was Kian De Los Santos a 17 year old boy in high school who was gunned down by cops.   The official statement by the police was that allegedly Kian drew a firearm on the cops and it prompted them to fire back.  Witness reports and a closed-circuit TV, though, showed two men pulling Kian around a basketball court in civilian wear. At the site of the confrontation, two small sachets of alleged shabu, a .45 calibre firearm and four shot cartridge cases were found. Witnesses have reported that they ordered Kian to run and handed him a gun. The Caloocan policemen believed Kian was a drug runner, but the accusation was vehemently refuted by the teenager's parents.
However it is not just physical damage and the loss of life that these EJKs cause but mental damage as well.  Human Rights watcher  Carlos H. Conde has investigated the trauma caused by the EJKs. One of Carlos’s subjects was a girl whose father was gunned down by the police which has created massive trauma.  In a direct quote from Carlos-“What struck me deeply was the level of trauma that these kids have, When I talked to her about that, she was very articulate and forthright, but you could sense the deep psychological trauma that she suffered in witnessing the violence and also being reminded every day of what happened to her father”
These children paint a harrowing picture of the long-lasting consequences of the murders. Another harrowing example of  how EJK effects children are three anonymous brothers. These three brothers, who were 15, 13 and 10 when their father was killed over two years ago, now live on the streets, after being essentially deserted by their mother, do not attend school and work menial jobs for rent. A 5-year-old boy's mother said he threatened to kill one of his friends and cover him in packing tape. "It's the same way the boy's father was discovered 19 times after being stabbed, his head wrapped in tape and a sign placed near him reading, "I'm a drug pusher. Don’t emulate me.”
From July 1, 2016 to June 30, 2019, the Philippine National Police announced that 5,526 criminals were killed during police operations. However, according to reports by domestic human rights organizations, this figure does not include the thousands of suspected gunmen killed in incidents that are not seriously investigated by the authorities, raising the death toll to as high as 27,000. Human Rights Watch reports and reputable media sources such as Rappler and Reuters say that these vigilante-style shootings were committed either by police officers themselves or by police-related killers.  This has resulted in many cases with regards to the violation of human rights but only one case was brought to justice and it was the case of Kian.
Even today there are victims of this abuse in power. On Dec 20 2020 a mother and her son were killed by a policeman in Pampanga.  This policeman by the name of Jonel Nuezca shot a middle aged woman by the name of Sonya Gregorio and her son by the name of Frank Gregorio.  This whole incident was recorded on video and shows Nuezca take out a gun and shoot Sonya in the head, then shoots her son while they clutch each other, then shoots each of them a second time. The video soon went viral, prompting an internal investigation of the police officer and murder charges. He has handed himself in to the police but this is again a harsh reminder of how rampant this abuse of power is.
The presidents reach of power also extends over to the media and government. The United Nations Human Rights Council adopted a resolution in July 2019 urging the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights to send a briefing on the human rights situation in the Philippines in June 2020, putting international pressure for transparency to bear. The Duterte administration reacted by demanding the termination of all financial aid talks from the 18 countries adopting the resolution.
Journalists are also being silenced as well.  This is the case with the company of ABS-CBN  news network and the famous journalist Maria Ressa.  In the case of ABS-CBN the company was accused of political bias.  Duterte accused ABS-CBN of not being impartial or fair during the 2016 elections. These accusations go even further when the President accused ABS-CBN of aiding Duterte’s political competition.  During the hearing for the franchise’s renewal the house of representatives voted on closing ABS-CBN after 25 years of news. Critics of the president say he's gone after media outlets who have closely reported his drug war, which since he took office in 2016 has left thousands of people dead. By government order, ABS-CBN ceased operations of its free TV and radio channels after its 25-year franchise expired in May.
This has caused massive repercussions amongst the Philippine society as 11,000 workers were left without a job and let go.
However there are massive long term effects as well.  ABS-CBN was the number one news network in the country and their network reached across the various provinces. With no news network most of the country is not informed on the various events in the country.  This was the case in November 2020 when Typhoon Ulysses hit the Cagayan Valley. Since there was no news of the upcoming Typhoon the residents of that province were unprepared and not ready. The result was a staggering amount of deaths in the Cagayan valley as well as a massive amount of damage.  All this is the result of Duterte wanting to silence his critics because of his actions in the drug war.
Another example of Journalism being silenced is the case of Maria Ressa. Maria Ressa was the CEO of the news website Rappler.  This news website vehemently criticized and watched  Duterte’s movements and approached towards the drug war.  Ever since the 2016 election  Rappler has been a harsh critic for Duterte but in 2020 Maria Ressa was jailed. The allegations according to the court were “cyberlibel” which is equivalent to 200,000 pesos in damages plus a few years in jail. Ressa’s arrest sparked anger in millions including famous journalist Amal Clooney.  Many have stated that this is an act that takes away the freedom of speech. A right that we Filipinos have because of our democratic government.  Amal has said her self that “the court had become complicit in a sinister action to silence a journalist for exposing corruption and abuse”.
Rappler scrutinized Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte's government, revealed bot armies and corruption, and reported his ruthless anti-drug campaign, which, by some reports, has resulted in tens of thousands of extrajudicial killings. In exchange, Rappler was criticized as trading "fake news" by the president, and his administration launched multiple lawsuits against him. In addition to the cyber-libel allegations, Ressa is also facing further prosecution for libel, two court proceedings alleging unlawful foreign ownership of her enterprises, and inquiries into her old tax returns. The numerous allegations made against Ressa could lead to prison sentences of about 100 years.
Various journalists have also been  victims to Duterte’s silencing.  In November, one journalist had been killed: news anchor Eduardo Dizon of Mindanao's Kidapawan City, who was shot dead on July 10. At least one of them, Brandon Lee, was seriously wounded in an assault by a gunman in the northern Philippines in August.   But it doesn't stop there as Duterte has passed an Anti Terror Bill which at close examination controls our freedom of speech.  Under the statute, a criminal suspect can be arrested without trial for 14 days, a duration which may be extended to 24 days. Human rights lawyers argue that it breaks a constitutional requirement that after three days of arrest, an individual must be convicted. The anti terror law also will  monitor any social media discourse related to offending the president or his administration.
Even today the ruthless reign of Duterte continues as the police are given more power while the masses suffer. During the lockdown the president has stated that he will kill anyone who violates it. “My orders to the police and the military, if anyone creates trouble, and their lives are in danger: shoot them dead.”   This has created  fear amongst the masses as well as a new view on how the people see our government.
In my personal opinion this is not what a leader is supposed to be. Before I started on this essay I put a quote about power and I feel this is more relevant now than ever. Duterte’s absolute power has corrupted the government absolutely.  It has made the police think they are untouchable and has caused the poor people to suffer.  Our president is waging a war on drugs that is not effective at all and the Filipino people are paying the price.  A good leader in my opinion is one who puts the people first and not his agendas.  A good leader is someone who takes the Filipino people’s lives into consideration and does not murder them in cold blood. So with this current societal issue happening in our country I ask that you spread the awareness of how bad our president is.  Hopefully this country will change for the better and it will see a brighter tomorrow. In the end it is really up to the Filipino people and if they want their country to change.
“People should not be afraid of their governments, governments should be afraid of their people.”

Mistress Anna Chapter 29

Relationships: Anna/Kristoff

Anna's foot nearly misses the second rung of the ladder, causing her to slip against the wood. She clutches the ladder with her shaking hands, her heart hammering in her chest as she slowly makes her way down the floor.
Her barefoot brushes against the wooden floor, still clutching the ladder as she steadies herself on the ground. The young woman lets go, reluctantly turning to look into the same space Kristoff was taken from only moments ago. Anna quietly pads across the room, taking in her house, nothing missing or destroyed. The men were only interested in retrieving Kristoff, nothing else.
As she stands in the middle of her home, Anna begins to ponder who could have taken him? It might be company men, it would be the most likely outcome. It could be possible that it could be hired men. But it is definite, the Hudson's Bay Company had taken him.
Glancing towards the window where Kristoff sat watching the men, Anna notices his gun is nowhere to be seen. She spins on her heel, racing towards the bedroom, their sheets scattered on the ground. Anna drops to her knees, painfully sitting at the bed's side, reaching under the frame until her fingers brush against a narrow chest. She slides the wooden object towards her, opening the lid to reveal two more rifles and bullets.
Anna grabs Kristoff's Mississippi rifle with shaking hands, sighing in relief as she notices a few paper cartridges in a small tin box in the corner. God, she loved this man. She grabs two of them, pushing one into the barrel with some force, detaching the ramrod from the barrel, Anna makes the cartridge go further down, ensuring the powder and bullet are at the bottom.
She grabs the percussion cap, placing it over the cone with shaking fingers. The auburn-haired woman stands with the rifle in her hands, placing the other paper cartridge in her skirt, confident it will not stay, but it is her only option.
Anna steps forward with a deep breath, striding out of the bedroom and then through the open front door. Stepping onto the porch, Anna looks towards the road, her forehead creased as she looks for any indication of the men. She steps off the veranda, turning away from the road, racing through the golden wheat fields with the rifle in her hands.
She runs towards Elsa's property, disappearing into the woods to remain out of sight. Dry pine needles stab into the bottoms of her feet as she stalks through the trees. Her eyes carefully take in her surroundings as she nibbles her lower lip.
She isn't sure where the men would have taken him; they had said something about 'the sight' where their camp is evades Anna. The forest nearly covers the land after passing Ahtohallan, sleeping in the woods has never been a comfortable thing to do. Any flat land belonged to farming families or Metis land. It could be possible they took him to one of the properties but thinks it improbable; there would be no point in arresting him and not immediately removing him from the community. Unless….
A branch snaps behind her, alerting Anna to the presence of someone. She spins on her heel, raising her gun to have a barrel of a rifle pointed in her face. Her mouth is pressed into a thin line, her forehead creased as she does not relent. Aiming the Mississippi rifle up the stranger behind her.
The man in front of her is just a boy, not much older than Ryder. The chestnut-haired boy's stance shakes with his raised gun, his eyes wide in fear as Anna does not relent. The clicking mechanism next to her pulls Anna's attention away from the boy, another rifle pointed at her.
Her eyes widen at the sight of the tall brunette man, his mutton chops that merge into a moustache unmistakable. A feature Anna will always remember, thinking it ridiculous when she first met him. Mr. Erik Lewis
"Mistress, Anna." He curtly greets, "Lower your weapon."
Anna stares at him, reluctantly lowering the rifle, gritting her teeth as she finally knows who is behind all of this. The young man steps forward, grabbing the firearm from her with shaking hands. Mr. Lewis steps forward, roughly taking Anna's bicep. She hisses in pain as his grip tightens on her, shoving her along through the forest.
"Where is Kristoff?" She questions, walking forward. The young woman had always found Mr. Lewis to be more reasonable between Weselton and Hans' men. He may share similar views to that of Mr. Klausen, Weselton and Hans had towards Metis and Indians, but was always less outspoken about it.
"We've taken him back to the site." The young man responds. Anna gasps as Mr. Lewis' grip tightens on her arm as his underling answers the question.
"You do not respond to her." The brunette male snaps. Anna nearly expects him to order her to no more extended speak, but he doesn't. She can't help but wonder why he doesn't; perhaps he knows that despite her being a "half breed," her community status is higher than his. The daughter of the former Chief Factor of Arendelle and granddaughter of one of a retired Elder of Red River, the former lover of the current Chief Factor of Arendelle and mother to his biological child. He had no power here.
As they walk through the forest, Anna waits for them to meander back towards the road to wherever their camp is. But Mr. Lewis doesn't; instead, they continue their way through the trees. She ponders if he is doing this to torture her, the pine needles and cones still digging into her feet.
She grows increasingly uneasy as they stalk further into the wood, closer to her family's river lot, where Elsa and Eliza are. It is one thing for her being in potential danger, but an entirely different one to place her daughter and sister in harm's way. If anything is going to happen to her, Elsa needed to care for Eliza.
Her free hand rests over her abdomen, thinking about her and Kristoff's baby, worried that there may not be any future for either of them. Just the other day, everything had been perfect between them. Now she's certain nothing will be the same again. She stares up at the sky, trying to stop tears from welling in her eyes as the future of living in the cottage with Kristoff and raising their children together slowly fades.
The blood drains from Anna's face, her fingertips numb as Mr. Lewis pushes her through the trees onto her family's property. Her jaw clenches and fists ball as she sees those unfamiliar men congregating on the land her people have possessed for generations.
Her heart stops as she notices Kristoff standing amongst the Company men, his hands still bound in front of him. Nearly snarling, she rolls her shoulder harshly, making Mr. Lewis' grip on her falter for a moment, allowing her to race from the British man's side.
Kristoff's eyes widen as he notices Anna running towards him, his forehead creased in confusion as to why his lover is not in their home. The young woman stumbles on the earth, catching herself as the men around her begin to yell.
Two men rush forward, grabbing Anna by the arms, their grip tighter than Mr. Lewis' had been. Despite the pain pressing into her biceps' flesh, she ignores the sensation, her eyes searching Kristoff's, looking for any indication that her lover might be hurt. Relief floods over her as she can see no evidence of bruising on his face.
"Let her go, she's harmless." Mr. Lewis commands, approaching her from behind. The two men reluctantly let go of the Metis woman. As their hands leave her body, Anna bursts forward from the men's side. She moves towards Kristoff, her heart hammering in her chest as her anxiety courses through her body.
"Kristoff," She breaths, reaching out to grasp his arm. The fabric of his sweater scratching against the palms of her hands as she peers up at him. His gaze meets hers, his brows knit together in concern at her presence.
"Anna, you should be back at the house? W-why?" He asks, his voice cracking as his eyes dart across her body, ensuring no harm has come to his beloved. At that moment, Kristoff wishes his hands were unbound; he wouldn't fight, he just wanted to cup her cheeks, he only wanted to touch her.
"I'm sorry." She glances down at the earth.
"Are you alright?" He inquires quietly, trying to catch her gaze once more. She peers up at him, nodding in response to his question. The young woman freezes as she hears boots hitting against the wood of the front porch. They had gone in. Anna spins on her heel, looking towards the cottage she grew up in.
Anna's worry and concern shifts as her forehead creases as she watches the company men. She is furious, watching Mr. Francis Klausen stand on the porch of the house where her family has lived for years, encroaching on their land. Her eyes dart towards the woman trailing after the British man, her heart-stopping in her chest at the sight of her sister.
Elsa's eyes widen as she observes Anna standing next to Kristoff. The brunette woman shoves forward, past a company man emerging from her house towards her sister. Anna takes her hands off of Kristoff, taking her sister's hands into her own as they stand together.
"Where is Eliza?" Anna whispers, not wanting to let any of the company men inquire after her daughter.
"In the house," Elsa responds, squeezing her younger sister's hands as the auburn-haired woman begins to panic at the thought of Eliza being with those men in the house. "Don't worry. She's hiding under the bed; it's a game. She isn't to emerge or make a noise until she hears Bulda or one of us."
Anna's heart drops at the notion that Eliza may emerge from under that bed into an entirely different world, one without her, Kristoff or Elsa. Anna squeezes her eyes shut, trying to stop the tears threatening to form in her eyes as she nods.
A hand comes to rest on Elsa's shoulder, pulling her away harshly from her sister. The brunette woman cries out in pain as the company man roughly grabs her wrists.
"You can't do this, you have no authority!" Anna exclaims as she watches her sister being bound. Her gaze darts to where Mr. Klausen stands, his hands looped in the belt as he watches everything unfold around him.
"But, we do." He begins, withdrawing from Mr. Lewis as he meanders towards Anna, Elsa and Kristoff. "Kristoff Bjorgman is wanted for the murder of Mr. Caron. And your sister is wanted for illicit trading to American traders."
"What?" Both Elsa and Anna exclaim at once, their expressions mirroring one another as they stare at the company man incredulously.
"I have no idea what you are talking about." Elsa huffs, struggling against the rough rope around her wrists. "I do not trade illicitly."
"You trade independently outside of a company; you buy furs from the Cree at lower rates than the Company gets and then sell them to Americans at a higher price. Explain to me how that does not constitute illicit trading?"
"The Sayer trail," Anna begins, her brows knitted together. "The judge ruled in favour of him, we have the right to trade in any way we wish without company involvement. You may recognize a line on a map, but we will not. We have rights."
"You really think the Fort cares about that? Your infringing on our trading territory."
"You're infringing on our land," Anna states, her fists balled at her sides. Francis scowls, his jaw clenched as he stares at the young woman who once denied him.
"It's such a pity. Everything Mr. Westergaard did for you to make you a proper lady only for you to regress back into your savagery."
Anna tries her best not to feel intimidated as he comes to stand only inches from her, trying to make her submit willingly to everything going on around her.
"Mr. Klausen, that's enough." Another voice calls. A voice that makes Anna's heart stop, one which makes her blood go cold and sends a chill through her spine. She tears her gaze from Francis to the voice approaching from the road.
Her sky-blue eyes catching those emerald coloured ones, staring back at her with tenderness, but even at this moment, Anna can recall the cruelness in those eyes the night she ran away from him. The red-haired man's mouth curves into a smile as he approaches the trio, removing his gloves slowly before placing them into his jacket's pocket.
"Anna, my pet." Hans begins, pushing past Mr. Klausen to stand in front of Anna. She remains frozen, unable to move in any capacity as shock settles into her chest. He stalks closer to her; Anna does her best to suppress the shutter rolling up her spine as Hans places a hand on her shoulder. He presses a light kiss to her cheek, lingering over the skin as he whispers, "How I've missed you."
She watches him closely as Hans withdraws from her, his emerald eyes glancing toward Kristoff briefly before coming to rest on Elsa. The older Arneson sister's eyes remain fixated on the earth, not meeting the gaze of the Chief Factor of Arendelle. Hans clears his throat loudly, catching the attention of the brunette before him. Elsa gazes up at him with narrowed eyes, not shy in showing her disdain for the man before her.
"This must be your sister." Hans sighs, glancing back towards Anna before carefully looking over Elsa once again. Elsa stands uncomfortably as the man scrutinizes her but remains firm in her resolve not to show weakness. "Agnarr was right that you are the more beautiful sister. What a pity your affections lie with the company of women instead of men."
Elsa opens her mouth to retort, but Anna speaks instead. "What are you doing here, Hans?"
Hans shifts his attention from the older Arneson sister to the younger, stalking back towards her, tenderly staring down at the auburn-haired woman. Anna stiffens as Hans brushes her hair away from her face.
"Of course, to arrest that criminal and come back for what is mine."
Anna's gaze follows Hans as he carefully examines the property, his nose scrunching up at the sight of the small folksy cabin and primitiveness of it all, but clearly looking for something.
"I do believe Anna," He begins, his eyes coming to rest on her once more. "That you left Arendelle with my child. Where is she?"
Her blue eyes flutter at the mention of Eliza; she glances to the ground for a moment, trying to think of what to say. She looks back up, clearing her throat. "S-she didn't make it past our first winter here."
She will never allow Hans to lay a hand on her and Kristoff's child again. Hans' face falls at the revelation, resting a hand on her shoulder to comfort the young woman.
"I'm sorry to hear that. I know you were quite enamoured of her." He glances to the earth, his eyebrows knit together. For a moment, Anna almost feels horrible about lying to him about Eliza, wondering if he perhaps had changed. Those haunting eyes snap up to meet hers once again. "Well, no matter. When you return to Arendelle, I have no doubt there will be more children."
"I don't think your wife would appreciate you having a Mistress." Anna comments. "Nor do I have any inclination to be under your control again."
Hans' eyes flicker to her neck, his forehead creasing as he takes a step forward. He roughly takes Anna by the jaw, turning her head to the side to inspect her body. Anna's gaze meets Kristoff’s, he watches her intently, his eyes widen as he watches helplessly. She knows what Hans is examining, and so does Kristoff. Hans scoffs at the sight of the dark marks spread down the side of her neck to her shoulder.
"Let her go." Kristoff finally speaks, his voice firm as he clenches his jaw. Hans' grip on Anna loosens, allowing her to look forward. Hans glances towards Kristoff briefly, ignoring the blonde prisoner's insubordination to smirk at Anna.
"How pathetic." Hans scoffs. "I mean, it's unsurprising you've always been desperate for attention and love from any man in your life that you'd stoop so low to have a criminal warm your bed."
"Papa!"
Anna's heart stops at Eliza, calling for Kristoff. Hans raises a brow, releasing her from his grasp. Desperately Anna tries to grab Hans' shoulders, arms or wrists to stop him from turning to see Eliza standing on the front porch.
Hans easily brushes her off as he faces the house, staring at the child Anna had borne him over a year ago. "She died the first winter, huh?"
"Hans, please." Anna finally pleads, it being no longer worth it to seem strong. Not when her daughter is involved. "Leave her out of this." She clutches his jacket, trying to stop him from moving forward, but it does nothing.
He meanders forward as Eliza climbs down from the porch, toddling through the men towards her father and mother. Her red brows knitted together in concern at all of the strangers surrounding her home. The toddler doesn't make it to her father; instead, the strange red-haired man picks her up.
Eliza stares at her mother as Hans situates her in his arms, leaning away from the strange man. Hans' chuckle resounds through Anna's bones as she watches him holding her daughter, panic coursing through her body as Hans regards her daughter.
"Put her down." Kristoff orders as he steps forward next to Anna. Eliza reaches out to Kristoff with a cry.
"Papa! I want Papa!" Hans notices the way Eliza reaches towards Kristoff and how she calls out to him.
He shakes his head, disapproving. "Honestly, Anna, it really is pathetic. You run away with my child, climb into bed with scum, and pose him as her father. You people are really sick. Hopefully, when we return to Arendelle, she'll forget this whole twisted affair."
"They are not going back to Arendelle with you," Elsa states, glaring at the man who had stolen her sister away from her.
"We'll see about that," Hans responds, increasingly getting frustrated with Eliza's wiggling in his arms. "If Anna disagrees with it, I will take Eliza. She is, by all means, my daughter and my property. I have a barren wife who will gladly take her in when I tell her that this girl's mother was found dead by the side of the road and an arrested criminal for a father."
"You son of a bitch!" Elsa snarls at him. Hans hums, finally setting Eliza on the ground, watching intently as the toddler runs towards her mother. Anna bends over, picking her up by the armpits. She perches Eliza on her hip closest to Kristoff, allowing her to reach out and touch him.
Eliza won't look at Hans, whining as he steps closer to them. Anna wonders if perhaps Eliza remembers those green eyes staring at them as glass shattered around them. If her daughter can recall the fear she felt as she buried her face into her mother's body to hide from Hans on the night they left.
Staring at her former lover, Anna watches as he begins to give his men orders to start their journey back to Arendelle for the trials of both Kristoff and Elsa. Where she would be kept as a prisoner for the rest of her life to continue to give him children and be further removed from her culture and the people she loved. In the corner of her eye, she notices their guns piled on the ground.
The two company men standing behind Kristoff roughly grab him by the shoulders, pushing him forward towards the road as Anna watches. Their gazes remained locked on one another as he is marched to the road. Francis and Erik take Elsa next by the arms, trailing after her brother-in-law.
Anna stands alone on her property with Eliza still in her arms, only an unfamiliar man and Hans stand near her. Hans extends his hand out to her, trying to be cordial to the young woman.
Anna places Eliza on the ground, grabbing her daughter’s hand to move the toddler behind her body to protect her. Her sky-blue eyes narrow at him, squaring her shoulders and holding her head up high. "Neither of us will be going back to Arendelle with you."
"Oh Anna," Hans sighs, glancing down, "You will be returning to Arendelle with me. Whether you like it or not. We will return to the house, you will play the part of my perfect mistress, have my children, and I will cut that bastard out of you."
Her brows furrow at the last statement, glancing down at herself. She hadn't realized her free hand is resting on her abdomen. Hans turns away from her, careening to the other man standing near the house, giving him orders which pertain to her.
She glances at Kristoff and Elsa, the company men waiting for further orders before loading the criminals to the carts. Her eyes dart to Hans once more, watching his back as she lets go of Eliza's hand.
The Mississippi rifle lying only a few meters away from her, only a step away, knows it's still loaded. Without another thought, Anna steps to the side, swiftly grabbing the firearm and cocking the gun. As she turns, none of the men have noticed her; she stalks forward as if she is hunting.
She presses the gun's barrel to the back of Hans' head, the young company man alarmed at her sudden threat. He reaches for his rifle, getting ready to defend his Chief Factor.
"Throw your rifles down, or I will shoot him," Anna commands. The man glances at Hans, lowering his rifle.
"What are you doing? She won't shoot." Hans scoffs. Anna pulls the hammer of the gun back, preparing to shoot.
"I wouldn't be so sure. I've gotten to be a pretty good shot or, so I have been told." She's gritting her teeth. Feeling pride as he nods, much to her relief, the man lowers his weapon, sliding the firearm away from his reach. Her ears perk up as she hears shouts, the men guarding Elsa and Kristoff running towards the commotion.
Anna smiles as she hears Hans curse. "Don't do anything. Put down your weapons."
"I want Kristoff and Elsa unbound," Anna adds, knowing she had complete control over this situation. Hans would never do anything that might put himself in danger. She hears the clattering of guns falling to the ground.
"Do it." Hans sighs. In her peripheral, she sees Erik Lewis move away from the other men towards Kristoff and Elsa. Anna glances to her side to see Mr. Lewis unbind Elsa's wrists; the brunette woman rushes forward, untying Kristoff's wrists.
Elsa races from his side down to her sister, gathering the rifles away from the company men to ensure they would not try anything. The brunette grabs one of the discarded rifles from the ground, forcing them to gather into one crowd.
"Papa!" Anna glances over her shoulder at Eliza’s shrieking, to see Kristoff gather his daughter into his arms. She sighs in relief; they could work this out.
Hans turns on his heel as he feels the barrel against the back of his head waver, indicating her guard is down. He grabs the gun's barrel, re-positioning it over his shoulder and pulling Anna flush to him.
"Anna!" Kristoff cries out as she stumbles against Hans' chest.
"Listen here," Hans snarls, that familiar cruelness twinkling in those emerald eyes. "You and that brat will be returning to Arendelle. I will string Kristoff Bjorgman up by the neck and throw your sapphic sister to the whorehouse in the far north and you will learn to live with it."
Anna glares up at him, her nose scrunching as if she is snarling like an animal. She tries to jerk away from him, but he holds her tightly. Closing her eyes, Anna flinches away as she squeezes the trigger.
The gun fires next to Hans' ear, the noise causing the man to let go of Anna, cursing loudly as his hand flies to cover his ear. Anna stumbles backward, regaining her composure as she aims the gun at him once more, ready to shoot again if needed.
"Get off our land," Anna states, her voice firm as she stares defiantly at the man who had tried to take everything from her. Hans glowers at her before pushing past her, his men following after him to the road.
Elsa stands ready with her rifle prepared in her hand, observing as the company men mount their horses. Anna doesn't linger, racing towards Kristoff and Eliza. She cups her daughter's chubby cheeks, ensuring no harm has come to her.
"Mama!" Eliza reaches out to her; Anna takes the toddler's hands to press a kiss on the back of her small hand. The young woman glances up at Kristoff, resting a hand on his forearm.
"Are you alright?" His voice nearly breaks at the question, concerned for both of his girls.
"I am." She rubs her thumb against the fabric of his sweater. Kristoff sighs, wrapping his free arm around her shoulder, holding her close to him. Anna buries her face into his chest, taking in the hint of cedarwood still lingering to him. Wanting to remain in this moment for as long as possible, knowing that it isn't going to be like this forever.
This is a moment in their lives Anna never questions, this is the day Astrid acquired her fighting spirit.

It Takes Two Part 3
Requested by @verdonafrost
Pairing: Bruce Wayne x Female!Reader
Characters: Bruce Wayne, Reader, Troy North (OC), Curt Roman (OC)
Word Count: 2.2k
Warnings: Canon-typical themes and violence, angst, Bruce being a dick
Summary: January is nearly over and you’ve yet to collect the evidence you need to take down the Torn Roses for good. With time running out, a late-night reconnaissance leads to some unexpected events and a decision that could change your life.
Part 3 of 6
Part 1  Part 2  Part 4
The night was dry but cold. The rooftop you lurked on still covered in January snow, making you glad of the insulated suit. Bruce would kill you if he knew you were here.
After weeks of you working well together, the night had resulted in an argument once again. It seemed your belief that he'd finally learned to trust your instincts was wrong. It was the end of the month, and despite Roman not showing any signs of leaving, something in your gut was telling you otherwise. Bruce had dismissed it, citing the lack of evidence.
You'd argued, and eventually, you'd stormed off on your own, switching off the coms to stop his bitching. Of course he could've followed you. The tracker was still active, but you'd been sitting here long enough to presume that wasn't going to happen. Maybe he'd decided to let you have space. Or maybe he just really didn't care.
Boy did that thought hurt.
You'd never admit it, but after the last few weeks, the things you'd felt for Bruce had started to change. You'd always known you were similar, but he'd actually opened up since New Year's Eve and seeing that softer side to him, the one he kept hidden away from everyone…
You'd been dumb enough to think that Bruce had felt the same way. There had been times when you'd caught him looking at you and for a moment had been sure you saw your own developing feelings reflected back.
But if he did, if that was true, then surely he'd have listened to you? Or at least not immediately dismiss you? What did that say about the kind of relationship you'd have? You couldn't be with someone who treated you like a child who didn't know better.
Movement inside the building you were watching distracted you.
The whole building belonged to Roman, the lower floors rented out, but the penthouse remained his. The cover was that he used it to take one night stands back to, but you'd discovered its secret use of meetings with North. They were both in there now, you could see them through the tall glass windows, along with the hoard of security both of them traveled with.
They'd been talking for several hours and still were. The movement that caught your attention was by two of the guards. They were carrying suitcases. Roman's suitcases.
Was he leaving? Tonight? Shit.
Going on instinct, you grappled to the side of the building, grabbing onto the edge of the balcony outside one of the bedrooms. Pulling yourself up a little, you got a look inside. Dark. And empty. Perfect. You hoisted yourself over the balcony rail, landing silently. There were no cameras out there. No need. It was high enough up that no normal person could climb it. No alarm on the glass door leading inside either. You picked the lock easily, sliding the door open and creeping inside.
You could hear voices as you approached the bedroom door, but they were still slightly too muffled. Pressing a button on the arm of your gauntlet, you spread your hand over the door, the finger pads glowing dark purple as the tech picked up the audio.
"-thing ready?" North's voice spoke in your ear.
"Nearly, sir. These are the last two pieces of luggage, and we'll be ready to go, Mr. Roman."
"Excellent," Roman spoke and you had to fight the urge not to throw up. "I can't wait to get out of this godforsaken city again."
North laughed, "I'm almost jealous. I miss the sun."
"When the time is right, you can join me. In the meantime, you know what to do with the computers?"
"Yeah. Delete everything that could connect you, destroy them, and burn the place down. We have the decoy in the master bedroom. The official report will state an electrical fault caused a fire, killing you in your sleep."
"Good. That'll throw the Bats off their game a little. They've been getting too close recently."
If North said anything else, you'd didn't hear. You pulled away from the door, making your way back out into the night. Roman was leaving tonight and faking his own death. Any chance of getting justice would be gone. You couldn't let that happen.
It was easy, moving around the sides of the building until you found the office. You wanted to stop Roman, but you needed that information first. You couldn't risk someone managing to damage the computers in a fight.
There was thankfully a small window leading into the office that you were able to pry open and squeeze through. A laptop and a desktop PC was sitting on the desk, both locked naturally. Not a problem.
It wasn't difficult to hack both, your eyes widening when you accessed the litany of files on them. You'd already had enough to take down North for good and to get Roman arrested, but not enough to put him away permanently. With this though...you could destroy the entire operation in one strike. Pulling a USB from your belt, you plugged it in and copied everything from both computers onto it. You hadn't expected him to keep such sensitive info here, but maybe that's exactly why he did.
You moved back to the door, listening through it once more. They were still there, but getting ready to leave. You contemplated signaling Bruce for backup. But by the time he got here they'd be gone, and that'd make it all the trickier. And a part of you wanted to do this by yourself, prove to him that you were more than capable. You did message Gordon with your location though and told him to get there with cops ASAP.
You straightened, pulling a smoke grenade from your belt. From your observations outside there were seven other men in the room besides Roman and North. All armed you had to presume. You'd need to be quick.
Footsteps approached and stopped outside the door.
Now or never.
You opened the door, throwing the grenade into the room as you grabbed the man in front of you and took him down. Smoke filled the room in the same instant as guns began to fire. You grunted in pain when a bullet hit your chest, lodging itself into the armor. That was going to bruise.
Moving quickly in the smoke, you dodged the rest and downed each guard. The barrel of a gun pressed to your head. You ducked, turning, the crack of an arm breaking and North yelling echoing around the living room. Bringing your fist to his face, he slumped to the floor unconscious.
The smoke was starting to clear. A single shot sent you stumbling as it hit you square in the back. Spinning around, Roman was the only one left standing, aiming a pistol at you. He opened his mouth to speak, but before he could, you grabbed a Batarang, throwing it through the air and watching it lodge in his hand. He screamed and the gun clattered down. You followed swiftly after the Batarang, leaping over the fancy coffee table, and landing a punch to his gut. Roman doubled over and you brought an elbow down on his back, sending him to the floor.
You were on him in a flash, fists coming down over and over. Blood streamed from his nose as the cartridge crunched and broke under the impacts.
Finally. After years of pain and waiting you had him. Anger, hate, grief, flooded your system. God, you wanted him dead. Wanted to keep punching until he stopped moving under you. He deserved it. After all the pain and suffering he'd caused to you and Gotham.
Justice, not vengeance.
You heard Bruce's voice in your head. You'd never killed but that had still been the first lesson he'd taught you. The one he'd repeat when some scumbag got under your skin a little too much. The one you'd come to understand, to follow, no matter how much your anger roared otherwise.
You pulled back, flipping Roman's unconscious body onto his stomach and tying his hands securely behind his back. You repeated the process on all the others. A glance at the time said Gordon would be here any moment.
A muffled shout came from the master bedroom. Leaping over the sofa, you unlocked the door and entered. Tied to the bed were two people. A man and a woman. The man didn't look too much like Roman, but he shared his build, and after a fire, you could see how he could be mistaken for Roman. Especially once a few palms were greased. The woman was attractive, someone you'd come to know Roman would be attracted to. Another part of the ploy.
"It's okay, you're safe now," you said softly, removing their gags and making short work of their bonds. "The police will be here soon."
As if on cue, the door burst in and Gordon and several uniformed officers came barging in, guns drawn.
Gordon looked around the disaster area, spotting Roman groaning weakly. "Curt Roman? The hell is goin' on here?!" He asked, lowering his weapon as you approached.
You pointed at two cops and gestured to the bedroom first, "There are civilians in there that may need medical attention," you said, before turning your attention to Gordon. "Curt Roman is the secret leader of the gang The Torn Rose. Mr. North here," you nudged North with your boot, "is his frontman, but Roman is the brains of the operation."
Gordon frowned at your explanation, "You got evidence of this?"
"This way, Commissioner." You led him to the office where the computers were still intact and showed him all the files.
"Jesus. They're responsible for half the drug trafficking in the City."
"Yeah."
Gordon stood straight and looked at you. "Thank you. We'll take it from here."
"Good. Make sure they all go away for a long time. They've hurt a lot of people."
"I will." Exiting the office you watched as Roman and North were hauled away in cuffs. "Gotta say it was a surprise to get the alert from you and not Batman," Gordon went on. "Even more of a surprise that he ain't here with you."
"I've been shadowing him a year now. About time I took on my own cases, wouldn't you say?"
"Never figured him to be someone who's okay with letting someone else take charge, but I guess you know him better than I do."
You wished you could say that was true.
The rest of the guards were escorted out, and the relief you'd felt was slowly being replaced with dread creeping up your spine. Bruce would've heard about this by now. Honestly, a part of you was surprised he hadn't shown up anyway. But it meant he'd be in the cave. Waiting for you to get back. With luck, he'd actually be happy you'd taken the whole gang down.
Yeah right.
~
"What the hell do you think you were doing?!" Bruce yelled the second you stepped foot into the cave.
"Oh, I don't know, taking down an entire crime ring perhaps? You know, the one you promised to help me with?" Arms crossed over your chest, you stared Bruce down, unwilling to back down or apologize.
"I was helping! You're the one deviated from the plan!"
"Because Roman was leaving! I have the audio to prove it!"
Bruce's jaw clenched for a second. "Congratulations. You got one man. Who'll be out of jail in a week because we don't have the evidence to put him away for good! Then he really will leave and we'll be back to square one!"
You flung the USB drive across the gap. Bruce caught it easily. "That's a copy of everything on their computers. Computers now in Gordon's possession. I'm pretty sure what's on there is enough to send Roman, North, and every single person involved down for a couple lifetimes! I know because I checked. Before I took them down."
You watched as Bruce put the USB into the computer, and flicked through all the documents and information. He was silent for a minute.
Bruce clicked off and turned back to face you. If he was feeling remorse, it didn't show on his face. "Good. They'll get what they deserve."
"That it?"
"What else do you want me to say? You still deviated from my orders, and not only that, you went into a dangerous situation alone, without even as much as alerting me!"
You scoffed. "So I'm still in the wrong? If you were so concerned why didn't you show up when you heard the police radio?"
"That wouldn't exactly look good for the unified front we've been putting on would it?"
You rolled your eyes, the action hidden behind the lens of your cowl.
"You're benched."
The cave seemed to fall silent at Bruce's words.
"What?"
"You're benched, Y/N, until I know I can trust you."
You scoffed, "You can't trust me? We've been together a year."
"Yet you still went behind my back. And I heard the state on Roman. We both know he's no fighter. You lost control. You could've killed him."
"Could've, but didn't. You know what he did!"
"I do, but we can't let our emotions dictate how we act. You chose to enact your vengeance, and that's not what we do. You should know better by now."
"Bastard," you spat, coming to a decision.
Bruce actually looked surprised.
The sound of your cowl rolling across the floor echoed around the cave until it stopped by Bruce's feet.
He looked at it, then at you, and frowned. "What?"
"I quit."
Like what you read? Consider buying me a coffee! (I’ll love you forever!)

Just a short begining to The Old Guard : Magnificent Seven AU that lives in my heart : (tw for an angry mob attempting to lynch Andy)
Nicky’s just finished his lukewarm beer when the commotion starts. He turns toward it, startled : someone (someone very uncooperative) is being dragged out of a building. And not just any building, Nicky realizes. Someone is being dragged out of jail. Maybe letting his own prisonner have a drink before putting him behind bars for the night wasn’t so stupid after all. Hang the thief ! Hang the thief ! Chant the assailants. Nicky's glad that his rifle is at grabbing distance. The thief in question is a tall, pale woman, all dressed in black. She’s putting up a good fight (kicking, twisting, snarling, and – ouch – biting), but she’s already shackled and hopelessly outnumbered. She doesn’t stand a chance. « Are you just going to watch ?»
Nicky tears his gaze away from the scene to glance at his prisonner. The man is lounging on his chair, shuffling cards and half chewing on a toothpick. Smiling. He looks relaxed – far too relaxed for someone currently under arrest – but his eyes are locked on the fighters. They make a small crowd now, and most of them seem armed.
« I am not suicidal, Mister Al-Kaysani. »
« I’m willing to bet a good half of them is too drunk to aim properly. »
« It would still be one man against ten. »
« You could always untie me, hmm ? Give me back my guns ? »
Once again, Nicky turns from the mob. Al-Kaysani is helding his bound wrists forward, expression absolutely angelic. A Jack of Hearts springs from his fingers and stills for a moment, held briefly upright between the index and the middle finger, before disapearing back in the deck. It takes Nicky some efforts not to smile. The woman has finally been neutralized, and is being hauled to the back of a cart.
«I think those bindings are loose enough already », he retorts. He knows it’s the truth, and that his prisonner kows it too. Nicky should have tied his hands tighter – should have probably taken the cards from him as well, and most of all gone straight to the jail instead of dilly-dallying. He files these thoughts away, to be examined later. Preferably after Judgement Day.
« Still », Al-Kaysani says as the cart passes them. « It isn’t right. » There’s not much levity to his tone anymore.
Nicky opens his mouth (to agree or justify his inaction, he’s not sure) when a deafening shot rings in the air. The cart stills.
A young woman is standing in the street, alone.  She looks, in her lovely green blouse and walking skirt, completey out of place in front of this angry mob. The old Henry rifle in her hands doesn’t. Slowly, she ejects the empty cartridge and points the rifle at the crowd’s leader. The man, to his credit, only soothes his horse :
« Go home, Miss Freeman. »
« Let her go. »
The woman’s voice is calm, poised. Nicky has absolutely no doubt that she’s ready to kill. The man either doesn’t see that, or believe lady luck has his back.
« Correct me if I’m wrong, Miss, but you are not the law. »
The young woman’s expression goes furious in a strange, reigned-in way that make Nicky hold his breath.
« We do not. Lynch people. In this town. » She says.
For a fleeting moment, Nicky thinks this will be enough. That the mob will be cowed and part ways. That… « Too close », mutters Al-Kaysani next to him. The man on the horse swings his leg forward, catching the barrel of the rifle. It discharges toward the sky and the woman falls. People are on her immediately, disarming her, dragging her away from the road. The cart is set in motion.
Nicky is moving before he’s even realized he would. He bends toward Al-Kaysani and pluck the toothpick from his lips, just because he can. « Don’t try to run », he warns, and walks out into the street, his own rifle firmly in hands. Al-Kaysani’s following in synch, half a step behind him, and Nicky decides to file that away as well.

The Many Lives of Drake Walker
A Royal Romance AU fanfic
7 An Unexpected Arrival
Tumblr media
Unexpectedly alone, I visit Duchess Camille of Valtoria and Duke Drake Walker
Drake pondered over Kate’s words when he and Charlotte were in the hot tub with the other couple.
‘Drake over there has probably kept something of Charlotte's at some point as a memento of your time together’ The truth was, he hadn’t – not a photo, not a lock of hair, not a piece of clothing – nothing. Only memories – things that she had written and the few experiences that they’d had since he’d contacted her and brought her through form the other side of the screen. If he wanted to remember Charlotte or Lucy or Les – all he had was in his head, nothing concrete. He had given her something to anchor her, but what he has was fleeting, unsubstantial.
And what was he? A gathering of electrons given more solidity by sheer emotional energy, the longing of the readers to find a soulmate, someone to give them what they wanted – or needed, something they couldn’t find in their own world. He was shaped by longing, by fantasy and need. But what did he want? What did he need or long for?
He craved solidity, reliability, constancy. How could he find it in his shifting world that took him from place to place, to dance like a puppet at the whim of others? If he kept something, would it remain with him? If he had some precious object, where could he keep it that was not subject to change? Even his face was subject to change. He was not sure where he had found the chain and cartridge he had given to Les to help identify him as her unique Drake – had he imagined it into existence? Had he ever really known his father at all?
That was why he sought out the writers he identified with – while he was with them he had some control and stability. He felt that the time for their regular rendezvous was approaching, and looked forward to it eagerly.
But then he felt the pull of someone starting one of her chapters, and he was drawn away to play his role…
Les
Writing that evening, I minimised and looked for Drake, but he wasn’t there. I realised that I couldn’t get to wherever it was that Drake existed without his help. Disappointed, I went back to writing, but after a few minutes I heard the familiar tapping and minimised again.
‘Hey Les – it’s me – Kate’s Drake’ I frowned. The face was familiar, and the voice of course, but sadly it wasn’t who I was expecting, and the token I wore around my neck when I sat to write was warm and heavy. ‘Your man’s sorry he can’t make it, someone’s reading through Charlotte’s Choice – looks like he has a binge reader’
‘Oh, that’s a shame’ I said, my heart sinking. DD smiled sadly
‘I’m afraid I’ll be taken up shortly, my writer’s trying to work something out, but you can come over if you like. I’ve found someone else to look after you’ I thought for a moment. It would be a shame not to go, and maybe my man would be free before I had to come back.
‘Okay, I guess it’s the same procedure to get through?’ He nodded and put his hand up. In an instant I was with him, and he put his arm around me to steady me. My token was hot and heavy and although he wasn’t ‘my’ Drake I still felt a little flutter, and he smiled at me as if he knew, but wouldn’t take advantage of it. We were in the waiting area, and characters walked from place to place or sat and chatted. Another figure walked over to greet me – another Drake, based on the original model but more lifelike, much like my Drake had been when I first arrived. He held out his hand.
‘You must be Les. Your man was sorry he couldn’t come, and when my partner found out you’d be alone, she asked me to invite you to our place’ I smiled and reached out my hand. He leaned forward and gave me a kiss on the cheek that was chaste and friendly. The flutter I felt was much less noticeable, which was odd but I realised each Drake was a little different, shaped by their playthroughs and fic writers. Their chemistry matched their followers and creators
‘Oh’ I said ‘that’s kind – who is your partner?’
‘Camille, I believe you’ve read about us?’ he said , and I smiled
‘Oh yes, I enjoyed your story’ DD patted me on the shoulder
‘I have to go, Les. Enjoy your visit. I hope we can double date again, it was fun.’ he said, and turned to leave.
‘It looks like I’m all yours’ I said ‘Where are we going?’
‘Camille wanted to invite you to our Manor in Valtoria’ he said ‘Shall we?’ he offered me his arm ‘I’ll lead you to the courtyard, she’ll be waiting for us’. In the blink of an eye we were standing in the courtyard outside the Manor at Valtoria – called the manor, but more like a mini castle. The stone was a pale honey colour and there were turrets galore. The gravel was a similar pale colour and had been spread evenly, pristinely level so no puddles would form if it rained – or so it occurred to me.
Camille’s Valtoria put mine to shame. The planting of shrubs and neatly clipped hedges was immaculate, set here and there with colourful bedding plants. The Duchess was waiting for us and stepped forward to greet me. I couldn’t help but notice that she was extremely pregnant.
‘Hello Les, I’ve heard about you from Drake’ she said ‘But I see you’re appearing as Charlotte – I’m honoured to have a member of royalty visit my Duchy.’ She made a little curtsey, but I rushed forward to take her hand.
‘Camille, please… it’s just a face claim, and I’m sure if I really was Charlotte I’d not want you to treat me any differently.’ I eyed her huge belly ‘You must be due very soon, are you sure you should be having visitors?’ Camille waved her hand dismissively.
‘Oh I’m sick of folk telling me to take it easy. The baby will come when it’s ready’ Drake hovered at her elbow and shot me a look that told me the he was worried about her condition but not stupid enough to tell her to rest. ‘Come on in and I’ll show you around – I made a few alterations so it will be a little different from the other Manors’ Camille said.
I had imagined the Manor in my own way, although I had only visited the kitchens and the terrace outside where the firepit, barbecue and hot tub were. In my own imagination and in my writing, as Lucy I shared the Manor with Liam (or Brad as I called him) and Drake in a legal ‘three way’ marriage, so had set out the upper rooms to suit that arrangement. As Charlotte it had been the ancient seat of the Severus family and the Court had stayed there during the social season. After Anton had been arrested for treason, Charlotte had awarded it to Drake along with the title of Duke of Valtoria.
I hadn’t considered the details of the downstairs layout, but Camille and her writer had obviously given much thought to the décor. Camille chatted away, telling me that she had collaborated with her writer as to the décor. It was beautiful – the colour scheme was understated and subtle, every detail given careful thought.
‘When I got pregnant Drake got a bit over protective’ she confided in me ‘As soon as I started showing he stopped me from riding, and although we held open house for a while – you know, allowing our citizens to come in and ask us for help if they had anything worrying them – he stopped that after six months.’ She sighed, and rested her hand on her belly ‘This one isn’t in a hurry to come out and I’m just so bored, decorating helped keep me occupied.’
‘She calls it decorating’ said Drake ‘But you can bet your bottom dollar I’m not letting her climb any ladders – either myself or the staff have been the ones doing all the hard work’ He took her hand and kissed her knuckles. ‘Camille is one determined lady, but she had to agree with me that the health of the baby comes first.’
‘Well you’ve done a fabulous job’ I said ‘I’m not sure that Lucy is self aware enough to take over decorating. Because I’m here in person, my main characters – that’s Lucy and Charlotte - don’t have a life of their own, they just follow through the story line when somebody reads them. It’s very confusing’
‘You’ll have some tea and refreshments won’t you?’ Camille asked brightly ‘I don’t have much of an appetite so delicate little sandwiches are just the thing for me – but Drake likes something more substantial so we end up eating entirely difficult things. It would be lovely to sit out on the terrace with you and chat’
‘Yeah, about that’ said Drake ‘I have some papers to see to, so I’ll leave you ladies to yourselves.’ He kissed Camille on the cheek, gave me a little bow and left us alone. Camille led me out onto the terrace, where two chairs were set out by a table, with a sunshade keeping off the warm summer sun. A young woman came out with a trolley and set the table with little sandwiches and tiny cakes and a pot of tea, immaculately set out in contemporary china.
Camille nibbled at the sandwiches and absentmindedly rubbed her baby bump, which was more than large enough to rest her cup and saucer. I laughed as I saw the saucer bounce, the tea sloshing around a little as the baby kicked.
‘The baby looks lively’ I remarked – your first, isn’t it?’
‘Yes’ she replied ‘and I can’t wait for her to make an appearance, she always gets lively just as I’m trying to get to sleep. She’s a bit too comfortable in there’
‘I have boys myself in my world’ I said ‘I expect the process is much the same here. Are you planning a home birth or going into hospital?’
‘I have a birthing pool all set up and the midwife on call’ she said ‘But it’s late so if things don’t happen in the next couple of days Drake will take me to hospital’ she said with a sigh.
‘My first was late’ I said ‘I know how you feel. The day before I had him I was out in the garden chopping wood, I was so fed up of resting’
‘It must have done the trick, but I think Drake would have a heart attack if I did anything like that.’ she grinned ‘I’m hoping some spicy food and a little bedroom action will work’ she winked.
‘Well that’s tried and tested, and if I know my Drakes, I’m positive that he’ll be very enthusiastic about it’ I joked.
‘It still seems weird to me that there’s more than one Drake’ she said. ‘I’ve not been outside my own little world, but he tells me there are different versions of other characters’
‘Perhaps you can explore a little sometime’ I replied ‘I don’t really know how it works – it may be because you are a unique character you might not be able to – but you can certainly have visitors’
‘Well I’m too busy waiting for this mischief maker for me to go anywhere else’ she said. ‘I’ve had enough sitting around – do you fancy a walk down to the stables? I love riding round the estate but have to make do with just going and giving the horses the odd apple right now. Drake won’t even let me groom them – in fact I’d better let him know where we’re going or he’ll get paranoid.’ She winced a little, holding her belly.
‘Are you okay?’ I asked
‘Oh just a bit of indigestion. Little Lily here is taking up so much room that my stomach can’t tolerate much. I’ll be fine’ She picked up a bell to summon the young woman back.
‘I wasn’t so keen on having staff to start with’ she said ‘but it’s handy when I’m so huge and cranky – there’s no way I’d be cooking dinner while I’m the size of a bus’ She smiled and told the girl to let Drake know we were off for a walk to the stables. Our progress was slow, but Camille insisted that we carry on. She stopped halfway to rest, leaning against a fence and putting her hand to her back, grimacing in discomfort again.
‘Oh this baby can’t come soon enough’ she grumbled ‘Sorry to keep on about it, let’s carry on, I’m fine now’ I was getting a little concerned, but she seemed determined that she was okay, and who better to judge than herself. She rested on a haybale when we got in to the stables, then we went to look at the horses.
This is Phoenix’ she said, stroking the muzzle of a jet black horse ‘She’s mine’ I looked at her, amazed.
‘And Drake’s is Sultan?’ I asked, and she looked surprised.
‘Yes, how did you know?’
Same for me and my man – except Phoenix is white. I’m thinking Sultan is white, am I right?’ She gestured to the next stall
‘See for yourself’ she smiled. I gaped, looking in at the horse, which was of course a fine grey stallion.
‘Well that is just weird’ I said, and paused, looking at her in alarm as she groaned suddenly, her hand on her bump and looking down at her feet, a puddle slowly forming at her feet on the straw strewn floor.
‘oooooh dear’ she said quietly ‘I think my waters just broke’ I looked around for staff, and luckily a stable hand was not far away. I told him to quickly go and tell Drake so he could set things in motion.
‘Oh hell’ Camille was clutching her stomach ‘Maybe that wasn’t indigestion, maybe it was a contraction – and that one on the way down. Surely they should come closer together before this – owwww!’
‘Every baby’s different, Camille’ I said, realizing that might not be reassuring. ‘We can get you back to the manor and call the midwife’
‘I don’t think I can – ooowww!’ she grimaced ‘Son of a b – where’s Drake when you need him?’ I led her over to a hay bale to sit and held her hand, which she gripped tightly.
‘Everything will be fine Camille, just breathe and I’m sure Drake will have the midwife over in no time’ She sat and panted, holding her belly and grimacing.
‘Oh that’s better’ she panted ‘It’s fading now. Where is that useless husband of mine?’ Another contraction hit her before he appeared, carrying a bag, the stable boy at his side. I had counted and reckoned they were around seven minutes apart.
‘Drake, it’s about time, why the hell have you got my hospital bag?’ she cried ‘If you and Gregor here help, we can get back to the birthing poo… owww!’ Her sentence was cut short by another contraction and she grimaced in pain.
‘Now Camille, you need to stay calm for the baby’ he said soothingly but with a slight tremble in his voice ‘Joanna is at another birth and she’ll be with us as soon as she can’
‘Another birth?’ Camille cried, dismayed ‘Why have a fucking midwife if she runs off to deliver someone else’s baby? She’s supposed to be on call twenty four seven’ She panted, and Drake went to her side and held her hand.
‘Look at me Camille – remember your breathing – nice deep breaths just now, stay calm and everything will be fine. When the contraction’s finished we’ll get you back to the house’
‘I – oh my god, it hurts’ she moaned ‘Drake Walker, this is all your fault’ Drake looked at me sheepishly and I gave him a sympathetic smile.
‘Yes my darling, you can blame me for everything if it will make you happy.’ He crooned, waiting for the contraction to die down. ‘Now put your arm around my shoulder and we’ll make our way baaa…’ he was cut short by Camille squeezing his hand hard and he winced in pain.
‘Ohmygod it’s not over yet’ she grimaced ‘Just wait – I can’t – ooooohhh’ She panted. Drake looked over at the stable hand.
‘Gregor, go get hot water and towels – lots of them. I think little Lily may be born right here’
‘Here?’ moaned Camille ‘but the birthing pool – and the music – and the rose petals – not in the stable’ tears started to spill down her cheeks. Drake motioned me over.
‘Les if you take a look in the bag, there’s an MP3 player and a portable speaker. If you can set it up, we can have the music Camille wanted at least.’ I did as I was asked, and soon soothing music filled the air. I saw Camille relax a little, but she was still not happy
‘Drake, it shouldn’t be – the contractions, they’re so close, it’s happening too quick’ she sobbed. I went to her side
‘Camille sweetie, listen to me. Once your waters break, everything happens much quicker. It’s quite normal – and by the way little Lily was kicking your teacup I’d say she was in the right position to make an appearance very soon, head down and ready to pop out’ Camille nodded
‘Th-thankyou Les – but where’s the midwife – h - how about a doctor? Drake – it’s happening so fast’ she was trying not to cry, but hormones were raging through her and I knew that once she started to get irrational and emotional it wouldn’t be long before the baby came. She looked at me pleadingly ‘Can’t you get me inside? I know you can take short cuts, Drake told me about it’ My heart broke.
‘I’m so sorry Camille, I only know how to do it with my Drake, and I don’t want to risk getting anything wrong and hurting the baby’ Tears streamed down her face and I stood helpless. I couldn’t even get help as I didn’t know who to fetch or where they might be.
‘Now Camille – baby – listen to me’ said Drake ‘I – I’ve delivered foals before…’ Camille’s eyes sprang wide open and she glared at him angrily.
‘I am NOT a fucking horse, Drake’ she sobbed ‘I’m not giving birth to a foal, this is our BABY’ she groaned in frustration before another contraction hit and she panted and puffed through it. Gregor appeared with a sheet, towels and hot water. He and I spread the sheet out, and piled the towels up on a clean surface. Drake rummaged in the bag he’d brought and got hand sanitiser out. At his direction, all three of us used it just in case we had to help. Meanwhile Camille was coping with another contraction, panting and whimpering.
‘Your Grace, someone is sure to come’ said Gregor, his tone slightly shaky ‘both myself and your husband contacted the midwife and doctor, and they assured me help is coming’ She nodded as she panted, and Drake coaxed her into a position where he could see what was happening, draping a sheet over her knees to preserve what dignity he could, and Gregor stayed at the door to the stable to keep watch for help.
‘Les, could you hold Camille’s hand while I take a look?’ Drake asked, and he patted her hand reassuringly before moving to her feet. He took her soaked panties off and peered at her ‘I can’t see the head yet’ he said ‘But I think we haven’t got long to wait’
‘You THINK?’ Camille screamed, and lay back in exasperation ‘Where the FUCK is my midwife – I want Theresa’ she cried, and started weeping. I knew from my own experience that the rapid switch of emotions meant that Drake was correct, and the baby would be making an appearance very soon. Another contraction hit, and Drake’s eyes widened.
‘I think – I see the head, she’s crowning. You need to push, darling’
I saw a flurry of movement at the door of the stable, and a tall dark haired woman entered, carrying a black bag of the sort one always sees in dramas about midwives and doctors, and I wondered who had conjured it up. She pushed Drake to the side and knelt to examine Camille. Drake immediately went to his wife’s side as the midwife swept into action.
‘Your Grace – no time for introductions, your baby is eager to make an appearance’ she said in a clipped tone. The contraction had died away and Camille was whimpering. ‘Next time I want you to push as hard as you can’ Camille nodded, biting her lip, and Drake peered over the sheet while squeezing her hand. He was obviously torn between staying by her side and seeing his daughter enter the world.
The next contraction hit, and Camille panted short and fast to start with.
‘Push, your Grace’ encouraged the midwife ‘Bear down, she’s coming’ Camille’s face contorted, sweat from her brow streaming down to join the tears on her cheeks, and Drake put his arm around her shoulders and held her tight. The contraction stopped and Camille lay back, moaning in pain. She looked at Drake with venom.
‘This is all your fault – I swear to GOD you’re never touching me again’  she growled. I looked across at him with sympathy
‘It’s okay Drake, it’s just the hormones talking’ I assured him as Camille gathered her strength  for the next push. The pattern repeated three times, Camille pushing then resting, berating Drake for getting her pregnant in language that I was sure she never normally used. Drake pursed his lips and took the abuse with fortitude.
‘You’re doing fine Camille’ I said soothingly ‘Everything’s going to be okay’ She nodded, and squeezed my hand tight as another contraction hit. She screwed up her face and pushed – and pushed – and screamed long and loud. Drake was transfixed, peering over the sheet, and I saw his face change as Camille suddenly relaxed and lay back exhausted, weeping and laughing.
‘That’s it your Grace’ said the midwife ‘Your baby’s here – it’s a girl!’ Efficiently she scooped up the indignantly squalling baby for Drake to see, and he scrambled round to get closer. ‘Would you like to cut the umbilical your Grace?’ she asked him, motioning to the scissors that lay at Camille’s feet ‘You might want to get ready to hold the baby next to your skin, let her feel your heartbeat, your Grace’ she advised Camille. Drake was gazing adoringly at his daughter as I helped Camille open up her blouse. After cutting the cord, with an air of reverence and so, so gently Drake took the infant who immediately quietened as he crooned softly to her.
‘There there little Lily, welcome to the world. Your mama and I love you so much’ and almost reluctantly he handed her over to Camille to lay on her chest. ‘I’m a father’ he said quietly, unbelievingly ‘you’re a mother Camille – our little Lily is here at last’ Camille was fixed on the tiny baby, gazing down lovingly as she waved her little arms and legs and opened and closed her tiny fists like starfish.
‘Oh little one – you’re just perfect’ she whispered, and looked up to Drake ‘Look what we did – isn’t she just wonderful?’ I smiled at the idyllic scene in front of me, but became aware of another presence. The token around my neck cooled and became lighter as my Drake appeared in the doorway of the stable, and a look of amazement crossed his face.
‘What the – well Les, you’re certainly in the thick of it’ he said incredulously. I went over to him to take his arm and give him a kiss on the cheek. Camille and her Drake were totally caught up in the new arrival and hadn’t registered that anyone else was there.
‘I think perhaps we can leave them right now’ I whispered ‘We can visit another time’ He nodded, and I closed my eyes to take ourselves back to our own version of Valtoria out by the barbeque.
‘It looks like you had quite a time without me’ he said ‘I missed you’ He wrapped his arms around me. Never had a hug felt so comforting, so satisfying. He rocked me from side to side. ‘Les, I’m so sorry. Someone started reading Charlotte’s Choice and I couldn’t get away. They must have enjoyed it, they played right through’
‘You must be pretty exhausted then – that’s a lot of sex for one evening’ I said
‘Time doesn’t work like that here.’ he asserted ‘Though I don’t know how to compare with your world. It can be very fluid here. And thanks to the lovely writers out there and their insatiable lust for me – I’m always ready to go.’ His voice sent delicious shivers down my spine.
‘Uh – do you think it’s possible I might get pregnant here?’ I asked ‘My mind is doing somersaults thinking about it’ Drake blinked and looked like he was thinking deeply.
‘It’s never happened with anyone else’ he said after a while ‘I don’t think anything so delicate would survive moving between the two worlds.’
‘Oh my god – have you had anyone pregnant in my world come across?’ I asked. His eyes widened.
‘I’m not sure – not that I know of’ I shook my head at his answer.
‘In any case, on my side I’m past that, but the thought of being pregnant here, and whether it would be viable on either side…’
‘Your body sits at the screen while some – projection of you – some form of energy  crosses to here’ he mused, then sighed ‘In any case that’s dampened my ardour somewhat’ he said, dejected. ‘I’m sure someone will have the answer, I’ll ask around.’
‘I’m sorry’ I said, squeezing his arm. ‘I’ll probably have to go back soon anyway’ He patted my hand.
‘Enough time for a slow dance?’ he asked ‘At least I’ll have the memory of being close to you to tide me over until next time’
‘Of course’ I smiled, and noted that the MP3 player was still there, so I conjured up the playlist. He raised his eyebrows
‘Doing things the easy way are we?’ he asked
‘Why waste time when we could be holding each other?’ I murmured, playing his trick of speaking close to his ear, rewarded by feeling a shudder run through him. We started to sway to the music, our bodies moulding to each other, finding comfort and stimulation in our closeness.
‘What will you think of tonight when you’re in bed?’ he asked quietly, after a while.
‘You’ I replied as I felt the familiar pull of my own world, and his faded out.

In UP, families allege forced burials, say police covering up excess - india news
Tumblr media
Meerut: A pitched battle between anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Act , or CAA, protesters and the police in Meerut was beginning to shift from the main roads to the narrow by-lanes of the Bhumiya Ka Pul neighbourhood at around 4pm on Friday, December 20, when Zaheer Mohammad, a labourer who works at a cattle fodder unit, walked out of his home to purchase beedis from a shop. The police and protesters were positioned at opposite ends of the lane at that moment, and the shopkeeper, Gulshan, a 40-year-old woman, decided to down the shutters when Zaheer asked her to pause and give him a bundle of beedis and a match. “He handed me Rs 10 and then squatted on a platform next to my shop to smoke,” said Gulshan.Moments later, a bullet hit Zaheer, 45, in his head and he collapsed on the floor. “Had Zaheer not been there, the bullet may have hit me,” said Gulshan. She doesn’t know who fired the fatal shot, but she is certain that it came from the police’s direction.“Zaheer was a simpleton. He didn’t even seem curious of bothered about the protests,” said Gulshan.Zaheer was among at least five civilians killed during protests that Friday in Meerut - the district with the highest casualty count. Each of them fell to bullets that the police insist were fired by the protesters themselves.Five days later, on Wednesday, the biggest grouse of the families of each of these men was that the police allegedly forced them to bury the dead urgently, secretly, away from their neighbourhoods, and in the absence of some of their nearest ones.FIRs AGAINST THE DEAD, POLICE ADMIT TO FIRINGIn addition, each of the dead have been named as accused in the FIRs registered after their deaths. “These men were present at the scenes of violence and remain under suspicion. In the FIRs, they have been named as accused and their roles will be probed scientifically,” said AN Singh, superintendent of police (Meerut City). The SP said that there was “heavy firing” by the protesters in Meerut in which nine police and paramilitary personnel were hit and 69 empty cartridges were found during clean up.He also admitted that the police fired at the protesters, making it the third instance after Bijnor and Kanpur where police are now admitting to opening fire. “We fired seven rounds,” said the SP, adding that no deaths occurred at those spots. In the immediate aftermath of the statewide protests, police insisted that they did not fire at protestors. The violence has claimed 18 lives, of which at least 14 are from bullet injuries. The police have registered 14 FIRs and arrested 37 suspects so far for the violence.‘FORCED’ TO BURY QUICKLY, AWAY FROM HOMEZaheer’s father, Munsi Ahmed, said, “Only four members of our family were around when Zaheer’s body was buried around 6.30am on Saturday, within two hours of us receiving his body. When we sought more time, the police told me that I would be held legally responsible for any disturbance. The police only dug the grave and hundreds of them stayed around till we were done with the burial. I couldn’t even bring his body home,” said Ahmed.A few lanes away, 28-year-old Mohsin was shot dead around the same time when he left his home to get fodder for his two buffaloes. “He had returned from namaaz. He gave two toffees to his four-year-old daughter and left home. Minutes later, we heard gunshots and someone came home to inform that my son was killed by a bullet in his chest,” said Mohsin’s mother, Nafeesa.Mohsin’s two younger brothers work as scrap dealers in Karnataka, and they heard of his death on Friday evening. “We had no money for flight tickets, so our friends pooled money for our travel. By the time we reached Meerut on Saturday noon, my brother was already buried. I loved my brother. He was older, but never beat me, never scolded me. I couldn’t see him one last time and I feel guilty about it,” said his brother, Mohammad Rameez, 19.The story of Asif, a 32-year-old orphan who worked as a labourer at a tyre shop is similar. “He was headed to a nearby mosque to offer prayers amidst the violent protests when he was shot in his back. The police compelled us to bury him just after morning namaaz on Saturday,” said his mother-in-law, Shameem.Asif has left behind a pregnant wife and three children.About four kilometers away, in the Ahmed Nagar neighbourhood of Meerut city, two other men were shot dead about a kilometre from their homes. One was Mohammad Asif, a 20-year-old e-rickshaw driver and the other was Aleem Ansari, a 24-year-old man who baked tandoori rotis at a dhaba on the Hapur Road where many violent protests unfolded on Friday.SP Singh couldn’t elaborate the circumstances of the deaths of four men, but said that there are inputs to suggest that Mohammad Asif was present at the spot and was part of a conspiracy. “Whether he was there independently or with others is being probed,” said the officer.Mohammad Asif’s father, Idul Hasan, said he initially learnt of his son’s death from photos of the dead men being circulated on mobile phones and got a confirmation from the GTB Enclave police station, from where he received a phone call. “Until 2015, we lived in Delhi’s Dilshad Garden. When the police took my son’s body, they found an Aadhaar card that had our Delhi address where my in-laws now live. The Delhi Police reached there and then called me,” said Hasan.Mohammad Asif was shot in the chest.Hasan said that the Delhi address was being used as a pretext by the police to call him a “mastermind” of the violence and . “My son only wanted to make money. He wanted to purchase an auto-rickshaw and a plot of land to build a house for us. No one in our family had ever been to a police station earlier, leave alone be involved in a crime,” said Hasan. The autopsies on the bodies of Mohammad Asif and Ansari were conducted late Saturday afternoon. The bodies were then handed over to their families at 4pm and the burial completed by 7pm. “Hardly anyone from our family was around when he was buried. The police snatched from me even the chance to grieve and bury him properly,” said Hasan.AUTOPSY IN FAMILY’S ABSENCEAs for Ansari, his autopsy was conducted in the absence of his family, police said. “His dhaba shut down due to the protests and he left for home. His body was found with a bullet wound to his head on the roadside along the route he took to return home,” said his brother, Mohammad Salauddin. His family, too, got to know of his death by seeing the images of the dead men on a mobile phone. “All night we couldn’t leave our neighbourhood because of the tense situation and the heavy police presence. In the morning, I reached a hospital and checked a body in the mortuary to find it wasn’t my brother’s,” said Salauddin. That body was Mohammad Asif’s.The family finally got Ansari’s body at 5pm. The autopsy had already been conducted. The SP said that since an identity card was found on Ansari’s body, the police didn’t feel the need to wait for his family before carrying out the post-mortem examination.Ansari’s body was handed over to his family on two conditions, said his other brother, Mohammad Mubarak. “We had to give an assurance that we wouldn’t take his body home and also not bury it in our immediate neighbourhood.” The SP said he wasn’t aware of any police pressure on the families of the dead when it came to the burials. “Had we wanted, we could have buried the dead by ourselves. But we handed over the bodies to the families at the mortuary itself. The burials happened as per their choice and wish. Policemen stayed around, but just to maintain peace,” said the officer.BLOODY FRIDAY Describing the sequence of events that took place on Friday, the SP said that it all seemed well until 2.30pm, though the shutting down of shops in the neighbourhoods did arouse suspicion. “After the namaaz at a mosque, some returned to their homes while others began wearing black bands and shouting ‘bhadkau and uttezak’ (provocative) slogans,” he said without mentioning the nature of the slogans.“There were prohibitory orders in place, but thousands of people began marching towards the main Hapur Road. When we tried to stop them, then misbehaved and began pelting stones. They were running in all directions and pelting stones and firing. They were able to get as far as seven kilometers from where the protests began. People were firing even from terraces of their homes. One of them was a 60-year-old man,” said the SP.The story from across the state is the same. Afternoon, post-prayer protest marches that turned violent. “We took anti-riot measures and used tear gas, but the mob set a police post on fire and burnt several vehicles. Sometimes, we were dealing with mobs in two-three directions. They were firing shots and we fired a few rounds in the air,” he said.He said that at least 60 policemen were hurt in the violence. “We know of injuries to four members of the public.” “If the mob was shooting at the police, why weren’t any policemen killed? Why would the protesters shoot their own people?” asked Salim Siddiqui, a local social worker. Read the full article

Cobbett’s Political Register,  1832
Page 733: As soon as the magistrate appeared, a farmer of the name of Doyle, one of those who do not live to repent of their temerity, according to some accounts, assured them, in coarse and strong terms, that he would oppose any attempt on his farm with open force, and upon the magistrates proceeding to cover with their authority the proceeding of the valuators, the signal was given by Doyle, and, with a surprising celerity, crowds showed themselves upon the adjacent high grounds, and proceeded to approach the position which was occupied by the magistrate and the military. When thy had reached to within a short distance of this spot, they were warned against any attempt to close upon the troops: but to this admonition they appeared to pay no other regard than to cast stones, which they did with some effect. The Riot act was then read by General Barry; and during the reading of it, as well as during the time allowed by law for the dispersion of the crowd, the throwing of stones did not cease; until at length the crowd, though continuing the assault as described, made a movement in advance, evidently with the intention of opposing the small body opposed to them. At this critical moment the alternative was plain, and accordingly the order was given to repel the assailants — twenty men fired, and nineteen shots took effect. Four fell dead, among whom was Doyle already mentioned; 15 were wounded, of which number one died in a short time.
Page 739: He stated that on the morning of Wednesday, the 5th instant, he was sent with a detachment of his regiment to assist the magistrate and the civil power in the valuation of the tithes of the parish of Wallstown. He was accompanied from the Glebe House by Admiral Evans, George Bond Low, and Garrett Nagle, Esqrs., magistrate of this county. On approaching the hill to the rear of the Rector’s house, where a crowd of people were collected, he hard Admiral Evans order them to disperse in the King’s name. At that moment there were about 150 persons present. On descending the hill, he saw a party of policemen in the act of charging the crowd, who were about thirty yards distant from their bayonets. The witness than received directions from the magistrates to follow the people, who repaired to the top of the adjoining hill. On the arrival of witness’s party, Admiral Evans took off his hat, and addressing the multitude, said, “I am going to read the Riot Act.” He (the Admiral) then took a paper out of his pocket, and read the contents of it to the people, “ordering them to disperse in the name of the King,” which mandate was peremptorily refused to be complied with. The Admiral then assured them, that if they did not instantly disperse, the military would be brought to bear upon them, or words to that effect. At this moment there was a general cry among the people of “No tithes, no tithes!” — and they refused to stir an inch. At this tim there were no stones thrown, or breach of the peace committed. The Admiral then ordered the party to load; they did so, and, in compliance with the order of the magistrate, he desired them in a loud voice to charge with ball cartridge, with a view of intimidating the people. The witness her cautioned his men, if he should be driven to the extremity by the magistrates, to fire by sections.
Page 741: The crowds increased in hundreds, and commenced shouting in a tumultuous manner, “No tithes — No church rates — No church — No minister.” The magistrates addressed the people in the most forcible language that could be used on the absurdity of their proceedings, and on going contrary to law. The people, after that, became more furious. Several of them were armed with pitchforks, reaping hooks, oak poles, and the woman with stones in their aprons, and the men with them also in their hands; the people did not hold the books in a menacing manner; about two hours were spent with the magistrates in remonstrating with the people, but when such remonstrances had no effect, the Riot Act was ready by General Barry, a magistrate of the county. He read it in a loud and audible voice, and accompanied it with observations — that if thy did not disperse in a quarter of an hour, the military should be obliged to do their duty. This had no effect but to increase their violence. He saw several persons arrested and handcuffed before the firing, and also several rescued, and heard a general order for firing by the magistrates; before that order was given, he saw stones thrown in the direction of the magistrates and military, and in a few minutes after he heard a general order to fire, and saw one man dead afterwards; cannot say how often the Riot Act was that day read; heard General Annesley and Admiral Evans frequently desire the people to disperse in the name of the King, and they did not do so; about three hours elapsed from the time he left his own glebe until the firing commenced. The people continued following witnss and his party from the time they left Blake’s field, and their conduct was most furious and violent. Saw a print paper in Gen. Barry’s hand, which he (Gen. Barry) declared to be the Riot Act; heard the Riot Act add three times that day; there was an interval of one hour between the first and second reading of the Riot Act and between the second and third reading an interval of about 50 minutes, and during each of said intervals the magistrates requested and entreated the people to retire, or that the consequence would be grievous.
Page 744: The people declared they would not permit the tithes to be valued; one of the magistrates, whom witness cannot particularize, asked the officer if his party were loaded, and witness then heard the office give directions to the men, and used the word “ball,” which he (witness) understood to be ball-cartridge, and the men loaded accordingly. Previous to this time, Admiral Evans took off his hat, and said he was going to read the Riot act; heard him at three separate intervals, of five or six minutes between each, calling on the people in the King’s nam to disperse, and each and all of the magistrate called on the women to disperse and go away, as they would be hurt. The magistrates said they only came there for the protection of the pool who were valuing the tithes, and not to value themselves. Heard Adm. Evans say, addressing the people — “I am glad you have given way and will allow the valuation to go on — boys, go home.” The people thereupon said — “We will allow you to value Mr. Stawell’s, but none other.” After valuing Mr. Stawell’s without any further interruption, they proceeded to James Blake’s fields.
Page 745: The magistrates again entreated of the people to desist, and Mr. Creagh Brazier, one of the magistrates, entreated of them for God’s sake to retire; for if the military should act, they would be the sufferers. A detachment of the 92nd regiment shortly after came up, and witness was directed by Mr. Low to go on with the valuation; when in the act of doing so, one of the people made an attempt to strike witness with a stick; the magistrate then called on the police to seize the man, but witness himself did so, when he was immediately rescued by a number of men armed with pitchforks and reaping hooks, and another body of people made an attack at the same time upon the police, who then put themselves into a charging position, when witness saw Mr. Low ride up, and cried out, “Police, police!” whereupon witness saw a stone thrown, which struck Mr. Low on the right shoulder. Deponent heard General Barry read the Riot Act; one of the police had a man in custody then; at the same time one of the 92nd soldiers brought another prisoner, saying he was near stabbing his officer with a pitchfork. He (deponent) saw several stones thrown at the magistrate and police, and the firing commenced immediately after. Witness saw one man dead on the road; he considered his own life and the lives of the magistrates and police in imminent peril.

Philippines Set To Ban Vaping, Arrest Vapers
President Duterte has vowed to arrest anyone flouting the ban.
Vaping as a whole has seen a turbulent couple of months as some nations have routinely demonized vaping, while others have recognized the value and promise that vaping can provide adult smokers. As America avoids a federal ban on flavored vapor products by the Trump administration, vaping has come under fire in new ways in the Philippines by the Duterte administration.
In late October, a 16-year-old girl was hospitalized in the Philippines requiring intensive care. Despite the injury being linked to illicit cannabis cartridge usage, media portrayed the injury as vaping-related. Philippines’ President Duterte has vowed to not only ban vaping in the country but arrest any vapers caught subverting the ban as well.
In a hastily called press briefing, the President defended his actions with somewhat questionable rhetoric. “You know why? Because it is toxic, and the government has the power to issue measures to protect public health and public interest… Better stop it because I will order your arrest if you do it in a room… I am now ordering law enforcement agencies to arrest anybody vaping in public. That is like smoking” said the President.
The Philippines banned smoking in public places in 2003, and an executive order was issued reinforcing the regulation in 2017. An estimated 1 million Filipino citizens currently use vapor products according to the Department of Health.
Vaping Under Fire
Following the injury of a young Filipino woman misattributed to vaping, Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte verbally ordered a ban on all vapor products. In addition, the President has directed the Phillippine National Police to arrest anyone attempting to subvert the ban in any capacity.
It is important to note that there is currently no law in place banning vaping in the Philippines, although President Duterte has stated that an executive order enforcing the ban is coming. “And they said, what’s the law? Never mind the law. The law will come. Tell them who — I ordered it,” he told reporters.
President Duterte has stated the reason for the ban is to protect the health of Filipinos and has given power to the police to arrest vapers and raid vape shops. In addition, the President has directly warned judges not to challenge the ban in any capacity, a move that has been denounced by the Integrated Bar of the Philippines.
Once quoted as saying that cigarette smokers should be exterminated, President Duterte is no stranger to extreme views on substances. The country is engaged in an ongoing war on drugs that has seen thousands of deaths to extrajudicial killings by police officers and vigilante squads endorsed by the President.
Truth About Vaping
While certain nations choose to engage in a war against vaping, we currently live amid a worldwide smoking epidemic that affects over 1 billion people globally. Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates there are 38 million smokers in just the United States alone.
There is an expansive body of peer-reviewed academic research highlighting the efficacy of vaping as a smoking cessation aid. One such study, performed by researchers at University College London, found that vaping helped up to 70,000 British smokers quit in just 2017.
In fact, vaping may be the single greatest asset we have in the worldwide war against smoking. Research from the University of Louisville noted that vaping was the single most effective smoking cessation device available, even more than prescription options such as Chantix.
Not only is vaping remarkably effective in aiding smoking cessation, but research repeatedly affirms the reduced harm it poses to users compared to tobacco. Research published in the Journal of Aerosol Sciences found that vapers face a 57,000 times lower risk of developing cancer in their lifetimes compared to smokers.
Implications
The full scope of potential economic and public health ramifications to an overnight ban on an entire domestic retail industry has yet to be understood. Trade organizations, attorneys, and the Filipino vaping community are scrambling to figure out exactly what is going on and how to move forward.
Thousands of locally-owned vape shops will be forced to shutter and release their staff, potentially creating an unemployment crisis and budget shortfall at the same time. In addition, over a million vapers are now deprived of the product that freed them from smoking, and an additional 17 million Filipino smokers are now left without an incredibly effective smoking cessation device.
The Filipino vaping industry and community must take advantage of every possible avenue for challenging the legality of the ban to ensure the future of vaping in the Philippines. In addition, the global vaping industry and community should stand in solidarity and show their support to the millions who may be potentially suffering as a result of this ban.
What are your thoughts on President Duterte’s extreme stance on vaping? Do you think similar bans are likely elsewhere? We’d love to hear from you in the comments below, be sure to like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter to receive all the latest vaping news!

• 1879 the Arizona Miner reported rich silver and gold deposits, claiming to have 2,000 residents at Ewell Springs. • Other reports indicate that the local population is unlikely to exceed 300 before 1920The persistence of mining settlements in the Arizona countrysideJonathan Lay Harris, 1971
• In the midst of the rapid growth of 1879, the settlement of Ewell Springs was replaced by Dos Cabezas, a town with its own post office, just above Ewell. • John Casey is widely regarded as the founder • Mississippi-born James Monroe Riggs (1835-1912), once a lieutenant colonel in the Confederate Army, became Post Cabezas' first postmaster and opened a shop he was Traveler's Rest named
• In 1880 there were ~ 30 mud houses and 15 families in the up-and-coming city. • In 1882, the year of the city newspaper, 65 voters were registered Dos Cabezas Gold NoteIn 1884, 42 students wrote the school of the city
• At its height, Dos Cabezas had ~ 50 buildings, 3 shops, 3 salons, 2 dairies, joineries, telegraphy, a commercial shop, a barber shop, a butchery, a brewery, a brickyard, a hotel, a ballroom, a boarding house, a blacksmith shop , 3 stables, 3 stamp mills For gold ore and about 300 inhabitants, however, the population consisted of at least 1,500 prospectors, miners and other mining companies. Employees who live in the nearby mountains and valleys –Books in Northport
• Dos Cabezas ("Two Heads") was often spelled and pronounced "Dos Cabezos", with an "o" replacing the second "a" in "Cabezas". • The postmaster chose both spellings, as seen in the city postmark • the English translation by Dos CabezOs is "Two Peaks", undoubtedly a more accurate – albeit less poetic – description of the twin peaks than the original, since the flawed version was only registered at the US Post Office in Washington DC interchangeable spellings persist into the 20th century
• The railroad arrived in Arizona in 1880, a station was established in Willcox, and shabby Scottish-born miner John Dare Emersley (1826-1899) arrived at Dos Cabezas to search for mineral deposits. • JD was a graduate of the U. of Edinburgh, a scientifically accomplished writer and botanical collector with drought-tolerant grass, who named after him Muhlenbergia emersleyi (bull grass) • was a correspondent for the Engineering & Mining Journal • several other journals, including Scientific American him
According to a miner who knew him, Emersley was apparently a greedy-and unusually tall-knight: "Every Old Settler in the Globe District remembers Emersley, a three-meter-long scotchman who had more claims than he could work, and jumped more than he could hold. "-Arizona silver belt (Globe, AT), January 6, 1883
• The Scotchman soon found a gold deposit and made about 20 claims. • He built a cabin nearby at an altitude of 6,000 meters and led a secluded life. He made a contract with God and vowed not to develop allegations from him, unless he received a sign from above. Nevertheless, the legally prescribed work to retain ownership of its claims produced several tunnels, one that Roberts, 160. The sign of God was never realized, and while Emersley was waiting for it, he died of scurvy
• shortly thereafter Starved to death among his richThe story of JD Emersley, a religious hermit who lived and died on a "copper mountain", appeared in newspapers across the country. • Emersley made his demand on the Lord to be used for the good of all humanity, though he did not wish for this last wish, the "Mountain of Copper" brought another wave of prospectors into the mining district and sparked a local copper boom out
• In 1899, a new town, Laub City, was dismissed at the mouth of Mascot Canyon, 3 km. on Dos Cabezas • John A. Rockfellow (1858-1947)[[[[photo], Author of The Log of an Arizona Trail Blazer, conducted the survey. • Rockefeller's sister was Tucson architect Anne Graham Rockfellow (1866-1954), an MIT graduate and designer of the landmark El Conquistador[[[[photo]• The site was near the Emersley claims acquired from the mines of Dos Cabezas Consolidated. Coastal coastline electrification required countless miles of copper power lines"Copper camp" like Laub City grew and prospered. The city grew and gained its own post office around 1900
• Laub City was named after (and possibly after) Henry leaves (1858-1926), a Kentucky-born investor from Los Angeles for German-Jewish immigrants. • He made his first fortune as a liquor dealer. • He later invested in mining, oil and real estate in Southeast Arizona
"There is every reason to believe that Dos Cabezas will be one of Arizona's largest mining areas" – Henry Laub, 1902
• A global increase in mining led to a decline in copper prices as supply outstripped demand. • Several mining experts collaborated to restrict production so as not to stabilize the market. Consolidated Mines financing had dried up in 1903. Laub City was a ghost town Cabezas also suffered from the mine closures, but was able to hold on to the operation of some mines
• In 1905, a Wales-born mining engineer, Capt. Benjamin W. Tibbey (1848-1935), with a "Mr. Page" in the city. • Ben Tibbey's mining career began as a child in a Welch mine. • Page was actually T.N. McCauley, a Chicagoer with a turbulent investment & finance career. • The two examined the mining district. McCauley had apparently stayed. Later, he claimed that he spent two years in Emersly's abandoned cabin. • He applied quietly and acquired claims on 600 hectares
• In June 1907, McCauley organized the Mascot Copper Company with a capitalization of $ 10 million and began large-scale development. • Euphoric reports of massive ore occurrences have appeared in the local press, e.g. B. "Many Thousands of Tons of Ore in Sight – Commandments for Real Estate" Fair to Become Arizona's Largest Copper Producer "
• In 1909, Mascot acquired control of Dos Cabeza's Consolidated Mines Co., the original Emersley claims that the Laub Group had bought. • McCauley launched a campaign to sell Mascot stock for $ 3 / share, later $ 4, and eventually $ 5. • His extravagant promotions included Investor & Press Junkets in the mine in private railroad cars, Food & Drink at the property's Hospitality House, and a substantial shareholder banquet at the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco with the company logo, a swastika prominently displayed[[[[photo]"The management of the Mascot has a remarkable array of sensational crop coverages and few if other copper mining companies can achieve their enviable performance in terms of actual tonnage when in the same development phase." -Bisbee Daily Review, March 10, 1910
• although stock analysts familiar with McCauley's story con artist Their customers were warned that by August 1910, sales of $ 300,000 had been achieved. • The shareholders owned 25% of the company, the rest was retained by the promoters
• While actual mining and ore deliveries were limited, the company announced that in 1912 a store, a boarding house, employee quarters and a new office building had been completed when Mascot continued its costly expansion and occasionally shipped ore. Arizona Territory won statehood
• In 1914, the company founded Mascot Townsite & Realty Co. to sell land in a new town they developed at Mascot Canyon:
"UNUSUAL OPPORTUNITY FOR PERSONAL GAIN By buying a property on the MASCOT TOWNSITE This new city should have a population of 5,000 in a few years." – May 1915
• By 1915, the city of Mascot had been founded. • Houses that could be reached by winding paths climbed over terraces. • Residents built a community hall on a single day. • On Saturday, a band called "Merry Miners" was organized – nightly dances
"King Copper, the magician of magic, has once again raised his polished scepter – and once again a tiny minecamp, a mere patch of the Arizona landscape, got the industrial incentive that was soon to turn it into a factor to reckon with The tiny mining town of the past was Dos Cabezas The next town is Mascot – El Paso Herald, June 25, 1915
• within 10 years The city would have ~ 100 buildings and 800 inhabitants. • The children were taught at the Mascot School and a second school with 4 teachers. • Many of the city's boys "grew up with gold to earn money" – Arizona Republic, March 4, 1971
• Although most Mexican residents of the area lived in Dos Cabezas, some, such as Esperanza Montoya Padilla (1915-2003), lived in Mascot:
"I was born on August 28, 1915, in Mascot, Arizona … In the early days, when I was a small child, Mascot was very large and thriving, it was also a beautiful place, with lots of cottonwood and oak trees The school was on this street, along with a grocery store and even a pool hall, and there was a pastry shop in the pool hall where they sold treats like ice cream On the hill there was a community center where movies were screened, I remember silent movies with Rudolph Valentino, even the guys from Dos Cabezas came to Mascot because of the movies.
At Christmas, they set up a tree in the community center, and all the kids in the city got their Christmas gifts. There was a road that led from Dos Cabezas to Mascot and all sorts of houses along this road to the mine. Our house was on this street. I remember a time when all were Caballos – horses pulling wagons. Of course the cars came later. –Songs My mother sang to me
• On January 27, 1915, a celebration in Willcox marked the beginning of the construction of the Mascot & Western Railroad • A large crowd watched as a cheering T. N. McCauley turned the first shovel out of dirt. • The last spike – a copper – was taken at The Mascot Townsite on June 15, 1915, followed by a "monstrous grill" for 4000 guests[[[[photos]• Activities included a visit to a mine and the company's "2-mile" railroad (10.6000 & # 39;)[[[[photo]"I feel that this project can only be a good and lasting good, not just because the mascot is established, but because many people who have only known Arizona in the desert so far may be part of it take home with them the idea of permanence that we enjoy in this great community. "- HA Morgan, Bisbee Daily Review, June 27, 1915
• In 1916, a drought devastated the mining area – wells dried up, cattle died and many mines closed. • On July 1, 1917, American Smelting & Refining closed its 20th anniversary. Lease the Mascot property just to give up less than a year. later probably because the operation lost money
• Following the bankruptcy of Mascot Copper, McCauley reorganized the company through merger. • The "new" Central Copper Co. commenced operations on February 15, 1919. • McCauley developed a multi-level marketing concept in which shareholders became stock traders. • The price was set at $ 0.50 per share. Purchases are limited to $ 100 / person and $ 10 / month. Financing Available • The vendors used portable, hand-cranked projectors to film the property at small gatherings of prospects
• According to reports, 70,000 shareholders were invested and were astounded when the price fell 50% when the stock came on the market. • lawsuits have been filed. • In an advertisement published in several newspapers, McCauley denied any action against the company
By January 1924, McCauley reported that $ 4.5 million was spent on the new building. By 1926, 400 employees were on the payroll, but the production of the mines proved marginal. In 1927, shareholders were informed that copper and silver prices would decrease as a result of falling copper and silver prices. Minimum amount to cover operating costs
• The following year, the company was acquired by Southwestern Securities Corporation, a holding company. • At the end of 1929 there were only 26 employees left. • On February 29, 1932, Southwestern Securities acquired Mascot Company through a public auction for $ 100,000. • McCauley moved to Tucson, was involved in a bank scandal, fled to California, then disappeared without a trace –A story of Willcox, Arizona and the surrounding areaVernon Burdette Schultz
• with the failure of Central Copper[[[[photo]And the departure of the miners began Dos Cabeza's final descent, though not without distractions. • Despite frequent mine closures and the onset of the Great Depression, the city set up a team in the Sulfur Springs Valley Baseball League, which also includes a squad representing a C.c.c. Stock • Willcox had 2 teams in the league, the Mexicans and the Americans
• Among the dwindling population of Dos Cabezas was Jack Howard, the man who "sharpened the first tools that opened the first gold discoveries of the Dos Cabezas district" and spent his last 30 years. with Mary Katherine Cummings, the story "Big Nose Kate"[[[[photo], in movies as Katie Elder –Tombstone Daily Prospector
• John Jessie "Jack" Howard (1858-1930) was born in Nottingham, England. • As one of the first miners in the mining area of Dos Cabezas, he is remembered by Howard Peak and Howard Canyon. • lived in the hills near Dos Cabezas. • He remembered as a crazy guy hiding behind his hut in a manhole to shoot at intruders as they rode into range. • On the other hand, some of his colleagues, Dos Cabezans, thought he was friendly, • divorced his wife Mary, who was divorced according to court records. a hideous and unpleasant mood, coupled with frequent outbursts of fierce temper, until she made his life a burden he could no longer endure. When you think of terrifying serial killer, Ed Gein, you think monster, cannibal, Texas Chainsaw Massacre; not mamma’s boy. But the truth is, Ed Gein was more like Norman Bates (Psycho) than Buffalo Bill (The Silence of the Lambs).
Edward Theodore Gein was born on August 27, 1906 in La Crosse County, Wisconsin. He was the youngest of two boys born to George Philip Gein and Augusta Wilhelmine Gein. His brother, Henry, was five years older than him.
The Gein family wasn’t a happy family. They were dysfunctional, with George being an abusive alcoholic who was unable to keep a job, and Augusta who despised her husband, and was more than just passionate about her religion (Lutheran). To her, the outside world would pervert or negatively influence her sons, so she kept them as isolated as she could.
For a few years, George owned a grocery store, but sold it and moved the family to a 155-acre farm in Plainfield, Wisconsin. This allowed Augusta to keep her boys safe, only allowing them to leave for school. At home, she preached about the innate immortality of the world. She taught them that drinking was evil, her husband being a prime example. She told the boys that women, with the exception of herself, were the Devil’s tools, and by nature whores and prostitutes.
After school, time was always reserved for reading from the Bible, and Augusta most often chose verses from the Old Testimate depicting death, murder, and divine retribution.
Edward had no friends at school. Kids found him to be shy with strange mannerisms. He would burst out laughing, at what appeared to be nothing. Beyond that, if he even tried to make friends, he would be immediately punished by his mother. All that aside, he was a very good student, even excelling at reading.
Even after finishing up school, both Ed and Henry remained at home with their parents, and on April 1, 1940, at the age of 66 their father, George, died of heart failure, a result of his alcoholism. That left Ed and Henry responsible for the family and all living expenses. They took on odd jobs around town, and were seen as honest and reliable, giving them opportunities for more work.
Both put in time as handymen, and Ed was a frequent babysitter for all the neighbors. This was easily his favorite job, as he was able to relate better with the children than he ever did with adults.
Life without their father was good, until Henry began to date a divorced, single mother of two. As he began making plans to move in with her, his concern about how close Ed was to their mother grew. He felt Ed was too attached and began to speak ill of their mother when Ed was around, creating a rift between them and Ed reacting with both shock and hurt.
Then on May 16, 1944, the two of them worked to burn away marsh vegetation on their property. The fire burned out of control, and the local fire department was dispatched. By the end of the day, they had managed to extinguish the fire, but Henry was nowhere to be found. Ed reported him missing, and a search party gathered with lanterns and flashlights.
Henry was found, lying face down, and it was believed he had been dead for a while. His death was ruled asphyxiation, and he had also suffered heart failure. Foul play was ruled out as he had not been burned, however he did have bruises on his head. No investigation was opened, despite some suspecting Ed had something to do with it.
Not long after Henry’s death their mother, Augusta, had a paralyzing stroke. Ed devoted himself to taking care of her. In 1945, he and his mother went to purchase straw from a man named Smith who lived nearby. According to Ed, Augusta witnessed Smith beating a dog. A woman inside the Smith home came outside and yelled to stop. Smith beat the dog to death. Augusta was extremely upset by this scene. What bothered her did not appear to be the brutality toward the dog but the presence of the woman. Augusta told Ed that the woman was not married to Smith so had no business being there. “Smith’s harlot”, Augusta angrily called her.
Augusta had a second stroke shortly after the Smith incident, and her health deteriorated rapidly. At the age of 67, Augusta Gein passed away, leaving behind a devastated Ed, who had lost his one and only friend and love.
Augusta Gein
Ed was now the sole owner of the farm. He boarded up the rooms his mother had used, including the upstairs, downstairs parlor, and living room, leaving them just as she had left them. He lived in what was left of the home, which quickly showed signs of severe neglect.
He continued to work odd jobs, and received a farm subsidy from the federal government starting in 1951. Not needing all the land, he sold off an 80-acre parcel. This meant he didn’t have to work, although he did take on the occasional odd job. To the people in town, he was just a strange man, “Weird Ed,” who mostly kept to himself. Little did anyone know what he was doing in his spare time.
Without his mother, he was free to read anything he wanted, and picked up several adventure magazines and others involving death. He was especially interested in anything involving true crime, cannibals, or the atrocities committed by Nazi’s. Ed was especially fascinated by the medical experiments carried out by Nazi’s in the concentration camps.
Ed managed convince a local farmhand named Gus to help him with a job. That “job” was to dig up freshly buried bodies and haul them back to Ed’s house. Ed told him he was doing some experiments, and Gus didn’t think any more of it. Later, when questioned by police, Ed admitted to having made around 40 late night visits to local graveyards to exhume the recently buried. He claims he was often in a “daze-like” state, and there were many times he would come out of his daze while still in the cemetery, and opt to leave empty handed.
The graves that attracted him the most were those of middle-aged women, whom he felt closely resembled his mother. He would dissect their bodies, keeping the parts he liked the best such as heads, sex organs, livers, hearts, and intestines. He would flay the skin from the body, then drape it over a tailor’s dummy. The skin would be tanned, and later turned into articles of clothing, such as the “woman suit,” which he wore in order to “become” his mother.
Human facial skins, that had been carefully peeled from the skulls of the corpses to be used as masks were thought to be shrunken heads. Kids from town would sneak onto the property to try and catch a glimpse of these shrunken heads, which Ed described as being relics from the Philippines sent to him by a cousin who had served on the islands during WWII. Ed would chase the kids off though, adding to the mystery surrounding him.
But Ed grew weary of the already deceased. He needed fresher bodies, and that led to him killing tavern owner, Mary Hogan on December 8, 1954. Although Ed didn’t go out much, he did frequent Mary’s tavern, which was over 7 miles away from his home. The reason? Mary Hogan bore a very close resemblance to his mother. Police suspected foul play in her disappearance, as they discovered a pool of blood and a spent .32 calibre cartridge, but they had no other leads, and her case ran cold.
Mary Hogan
While it was suspected that Ed was involved in several other unsolved cases including the disappearance of Georgia Weckler (8), Evelyn Hartley (15), Victor Travis (43), and Ray Burgess. However, none of those disappearances were linked to Ed until the disappearance of Plainfield hardware store owner, Bernice Warner.
November 16, 1957, the majority of the men of Plainfield left for the 9-day deer hunting event. Ed, however, did not join them and knowing the town would be mostly deserted, he chose to take a trip to Warner’s hardware store. He first went in and purchased antifreeze, but returned later, on the pretense of trading in his rifle. He shot Bernice, killing her, then taking her back to his farm.
Later that day, when Bernice’s son, Frank, the deputy sheriff, returned to town, he found his mother gone, and blood stains on the floor. The cash register was open, and they found a .22 caliber rifle out of place on its rack. The only other item of note was a receipt for antifreeze, made out to none other, than Eddie Gein.
Bernice Worden
When the police arrived, Frank immediately accused Ed, saying, “He’s done something to her.”
Questioning the residents who had remained in town that day, it was discovered that the hardware store’s truck had been driven out from the rear of the building around 9:30 in the morning. Also, the store had been closed the entire day, but residents didn’t give it much thought, thinking it was due to the deer hunting event.
Police tried calling Ed at his farm, but he wasn’t home, or at least not answering. On a hunch, they were able to track him down at the home of his cousin, Bobby Hill. There, he had helped Bobby replace a car battery and stayed for dinner. After asking only a few questions, police knew they had their man, and they arrested Ed on the spot.
When police arrived at the farm that Ed called home, they found the house locked. Entering through the shed, or outbuilding, they were unable to see much of anything, as there was no electricity. The building smelled awful, the floor covered in trash and waste. As they continued through, one of the officers felt something brush his arm. He turned and looked, and was horrified. The naked body of Bernice Worden was “hanging from the ceiling by her feet, dressed out like a deer, gutted and decapitated.” Bernice had been beheaded and slit open from vagina to sternum.
The body of Bernice Worden, cut from vagina to sternum.
Further investigation produced human skulls affixed as posts on Ed’s
bed. A box of organs, and furniture that was made from bone and skin. Skin masks,a belt made from the nipples of his victims. Then, there was the woman suit, made of pieced together skin, complete with a vest and breasts. The complete list, as documented by police is as follows:
  Whole human bones and fragments
A wastebasket made of human skin
Human skin covering several chair seats
Skulls on his bedposts

Ed admitted to grave robbing, stealing from nine graves in local cemeteries, and even led investigators to their locations. When the crime lab opened three of the graves, they found the caskets inside, but two of the graves were found empty, while the third had a crowbar left inside.
When asked if he had had sex with the deceased after he dug them up, he responded, “They smelled too bad,” denying any claims of necrophilia. Then he admitted to killing Mary Hogan, having shot her.
Ed was arraigned on November 21, 1957, on one count of first degree murder. He plead not guilty by reason of insanity, and was subsequently diagnosed with schizophrenia and found mentally incompetent. Unfit for trial, they sent him to the Central State Hospital for the Criminally Insane (now Dodge Correctional Institution), a maximum-security facility in Waupun, Wisconsin. He was later transferred to the Mendota State Hospital in Madison Wisconsin, and in 1968 doctors determined that Ed was now “mentally able to confer with counsel and participate in his defense.” His trial began November 7, 1968, eleven years after his initial arrest.
The trial only lasted a week, and was held without a jury as requested by the defense team. During the trial, a psychiatrist testified that Ed had told him that he did not know whether the killing of Bernice Worden was intentional or accidental; that while he examined a gun in Worden’s store, the gun went off, killing Worden. Ed testified that after trying to load a bullet into the rifle, it discharged. He said he had not aimed the rifle at Worden, and did not remember anything else that happened that morning.
Ed Gein, now known as “The Butcher of Plainfield,” was found guilty of first degree murder on November 14, 1968 by Judge Robert H. Gollmar.
A second trial focused on Ed’s sanity, and Judge Gollmar ruled that Ed was “not guilty by reason of insanity,” and he was ordered to be committed to Central State Hospital for the Criminally Insane where he spent the rest of his life. He was not tried for the murder of Mary Hogan, although he had admitted to it, due to “prohibitive costs.”
Ed Gein’s farmhouse and property were scheduled to be auctioned on March 30, 1958. Rumors filled the town, claiming the house would become a tourist attraction, but three days before the auction, on March 27, the house was destroyed by fire. Police suspected arson, but to this day, the cause has never been officially determined.

Ed’s car, which was used to haul the corpses of his victims, was sold in auction for $760 to Bunny Gibbons, a carnival sideshow operator. The car was put on display, and Bunny charged carnival goers 25¢ admission to see it.
Ed Gein died on July 26, 1984 at the age of 77. He had lung cancer, and died due to respiratory failure. His body was laid to rest at the Plainfield Cemetery where visitors chipped pieces from his gravestone until the stone was eventually stolen, in 2000. Liberals Triggered: Starbucks Closing 8,000 Stores Means They're Not Serious
Tumblr media
Liberals: Starbucks Closing 8,000 Stores Means They're Not Serious
We told you, ummmm, THIS MORNING how the liberals always overplay their hand with any movement that gets some traction. Related Story: VIDEO: Black man demands free coffee as ‘reparations,’ Get Used To It Starbucks It's been pointed out before but give a liberal an inch and they'll take 14,563 miles. Guess why we won't give them a gun Registry? Hell, I wouldn't give them a bullet registry. Just thinking about it, I wouldn't give the liberals a spent cartridge registry. Look at what happened in London. The people let them take their rifles, then their guns. Now Londoners have to suck baby food through a straw because the loony toon liberals outlawed cutlery. One word of advice... Hide the straws because they're next! Related Story: Butter Knives Beware London Mayor Issues A Knife Ban We wrote that Starbucks made an incredibly stupid move bending over and letting the liberals shove a 2x4 up where no 2x4 should ever go. While we said "soon" the liberals will overplay their hand... We never dreamed "SOON" as in less than a day? After Starbucks made the announcement that they will close all 8,000 stores on May 29th for "Sensitivity Training." The left had to be satisfied with that, right? WRONG! Related Story: Starbucks Closing 8,000 Stores For Sensitivity Training Starbucks rolled over and played dead far too easily. My God man the leftover BLM crowd didn't even get one good night of rioting in. All because Starbucks caved in faster than Chuck Schumer did on DACA. With so many of the Black Lives Matter crowd needing new sneakers for summer, they threw the liberal outrage train into fifth gear, and believe me that's a huge problem since the Liberal outage train only had four. Black Lives Matter activist and the national co-chair for the Women’s March, and Louis Farrakhan kiss ass, Tamika D. Mallory went and got herself triggered for rioter's sake. Her outrage is all because of the Jews... Yes, the Jews. The Ben Shapiro's of the world may be small, non-athletic white Mentsch's, but according to Tamika D. Mallory, they sure cause trouble for the black folk. #Starbucks is NOT serious about doing right by BLACK people! #boycottstarbucks pic.twitter.com/cjpDAXesCC — Tamika D. Mallory (@TamikaDMallory) April 17, 2018 My people...don’t be fooled... Pay close attention to the entire CHESS BOARD! #boycottstarbucks pic.twitter.com/jWYF3Xt80j — Tamika D. Mallory (@TamikaDMallory) April 17, 2018 As we said early this morning, Liberals always overplay their hand, so let's do a quick "jump the shark" review. #OWS Triggered liberals created Occupy Wall Street because they want corporate America to start treating people like humans, Sounds good. But then they set up camps outside Wall Street and liberals went and got all rapey on the women in the camps. Then the pooping in the streets, and the smell, Oh My Lord the smell. Within a few weeks, hungry, cold and suffering from painful diaper rash, the kids went crawled back to mommy and daddy's basement and POOF! No more #BLM Black Lives Matter, now it's was a good thing that BLM was protesting to stop a few bad Cops from shooting unarmed black men. But then liberals started saying all cops shooting armed black criminals even if the cop was black was racist. Then BLM "Peaceful" protests started burning all the black-owned businesses. The end came when those Police officers died in Dallas and BLM celebrated... POOF! No more #BLM #MeToo The #MeToo movement where you wanted the Harvey Weinstein's of the world to stop raping women. I can absolutely support that. Then it was any boss having consensual sex with a woman employee was to be considered sexual harassment. Then any boss asking a woman employee on a date was sexual harassment. Finally, if any man saw a woman he did not know, sitting alone inside a Starbucks and he went over and asked her for her phone number the liberals now considered that rape... POOF! No more #MeToo And now we come to #BoycottStarbucks. They got all outraged because two black guys wanted to use the bathroom and the SJW with crazy color hair, wearing her "Safe Space pins and sporting her "Trump is Hitler" patch said no. That made all 8,000 Starbucks racist? Let me write that again. The person that was accused of being the biggest bigot racist since Archie Bunker is not a Republican, not a Trump supporter, and doesn't wear a MAGA hat. She is a full-fledged, loony toon triggered Social Justice Warrior. In spite of that Starbucks threw her under the bus and fired her for calling the cops. Guess what she should have called the cops because those two black guys were mouthing off to her. How do I know? The cops came in and asked them to leave and they mouthed off to the cops who then arrested them! So if these two morons mouth off to cops with guns, who btw blacks think all cops wake up in the morning saying "First I'll brush my teeth... Then I'll go shoot me a black guy," then who in their right mind would think they wouldn't mouth off to a white SJW barista? So the woke liberals think Starbucks closing all 8,000 store is not taking things seriously? All because they went an hired the Anti-defamation league (ADL) to run their Sensitivity training?" If she hasn't done so already Tamika will soon announce that she want's Starbucks to have all their employees take "The Luis Farrakhan Sensitivity and Anti-Bias Training course." Because there's no one more tolerant of other beliefs than Luis Farrakhan. Guess what? POOF! No more #Boycott Starbucks, and in record time I might add. Read the full article
