I like to think Matt constantly has that queer urge to run away to a mountain and disappear under mysterious circumstances.
He wants that level of drama in life, he wants that gay mythos, that TENSION, and the only thing stopping him is Tom blocking the door and dragging him back inside the house.

Honestly, the "gay voice" and the "tranny voice" are both so fucking beautiful and stunning. Frankly, those are the voices I would rather hear than somebody who is complaining about the way queer people exist and speak. Those voices are what I want to hear serenaded to me, to hear express joy and pain and love, and hear exist. Those are the voices that are most gorgeous.

Being as you were a Percy Jackson kid, which god/dess do you think would be your parent if you were a demi-god?
I have not taken those buzzfeed quizzes since like ninth grade lol but I remember I always either got Aphrodite or Poseidon. I'm so rusty on these books because it's been so long, but I remember feeling very seen by the whole Poseidon thing. It's hard to tell how much of that was relating to poseidon stuff specifically and how much of it was just, like, Percy ALSO being an at-the-time middle schooler with authority issues lmfao. A lot of the percy jackson books rang true for me, especially the first series- I had one teacher who called me 'defiant and oppositional' and 'my own worst enemy' at every single turn, so I really related to the whole 'troubled kid' thing. It felt 1:1 and I think a lot of the kinship I felt with the poseidon cabin placement was probably moreso just 13 year old me feeling seen by a character for the first real time, and that character (Percy) was also in the poseidon cabin.
Sort of piggybacking off of the context of this ask and what prompted it though (HP, see my last post), this is why good representation and caring portrayals is IMPORTANT. I had a positive experience with the PJO series- it showed a troubled kid with a weird home life that was able to find strengths in the things that previously just got him in trouble most of the time. I was a little too old for this next experience (already knew I was bi for years before the nico stuff) but I know that a LOT of queer kids found solidarity with Nico DiAngelo as their first real introduction to queerness. I haven't kept up much but I know Rick Riordan has written a lot of queer and bipoc characters since and really leaned into his role of 'guy who makes middle schoolers whose best friends are their librarians feel understood'. I think contrasting that with other authors who have leaned more into 'I think trans people shouldn't exist', it's... you know. A stark difference. I think my positive experience of having been a PJO kid is part of why I feel so strongly about the HP thing. I've been on the receiving end of why good rep is important, and I can't imagine how I would have felt if I'd loved these books and Rick then went on twitter eight years later like 'yeah i think [group of people] should be denied medical care and not exist btw'. Ya know?

Maybe Station 19 was like an experimental cubist painting.
There were too many stories to be told and too many people trying to tell them, from too many perspectives, with too many styles…
Each viewer saw a different picture.
It was the show that tried to capture the zeitgeist and represent the under-represented. Also the show that often struggled. With the tones and textures. With representing w/o tokenizing. B/w laughing with and laughing at. B/w realism and romanticizing. B/w deliberate and arbitrary. B/w educating and entertaining. B/w what they consider profane and sacrosanct.
At times, it touched our hearts deeply. At times, it frustrated us to no end.
Not every story was given the respect, sensitivity and intricacy it was due.
One moment could lead to a profound understanding of an aspect of a lived life some of us had never known; while the next could be a moment that was beyond confounding - about an aspect of ourselves that made us feel slighted, diminished and even erased.
It had often been an exercise in empathy to find our common humanity at the intersectionality of stories. Yet, the scale of empathy often skewed too far in favor of some characters with the differing standards, narrative frames and plot armors. Ironically yet reasonably turning people off these very characters they wanted people to root for. A persistent dissonance and disconnect.
But it was also the show that didn’t shy away from the ugly, the raw, the uncomfortable and messy parts of our shared human experience. The tribulations of oppression. The perils of ambition. The tests of morality. The trials of friendship and love. That we would make mistakes, but we could also make amends. That we're not defined by our worst. That our best lives could still be in front of us despite the current struggles. That sometimes life sucks but having your people with you makes it more bearable.
I would think it an interesting journey for the diversity of people behind, on, and in front of the screen. The evolving stories, evolving characters, evolving storytellers, an evolving fandom - all amidst an evolving media landscape.
It was probably not an easy show to make. The show had a bewilderingly lack of support from abc or shondaland. Diversity seemed to be both good for promotion (when there was any) and the reason for the prejudice against it.
Just as it had not been an easy show to watch - so biased, inconsistent and self-contradictory. Like when they kept telling us about the family spirit and deep friendships yet somehow spent more time showing otherwise. Or when the writing of systemic sexism was somehow inherently sexist.
Personally, I don’t think characters belong to the writers alone. Besides the usual constraints, the characters were often adjusted back and forth to fit the plots. We’ve also learnt how network execs' dislikes, writers’ personal experiences were factored into the stories. I fully respect the writers’ artistic rights. But actors who embodied the characters for years have a unique understanding too. Viewers also have their personal takes about what were true to characters. It's ok to agree to disagree.
There had been sparks of brilliance, but often extinguished too soon. It has been confounding how the greys-verse did not capitalise on its vast potential, esp. S19. Even while both shows share a show-runner. Grey's anatomy could have lent its scale while Station 19 could have injected renewed energy back into its mothership. Both shows could have been better for it.
Although the characters have the foundation of distinct and interesting backstories, their development often did not fully utilise the narrative potential and the talents of the cast. I’m sure the crew was also competent and hardworking. But somehow some elements b/w n within the shows seemed to just cancel each other out instead of amplifying their impact. IMO 704 and 709 were a few exceptions.
But I'll always be glad S19 existed and we got a S7. I believe they had tried their best to wrap up and give closure to everyone invested in the show. I truly appreciated the hard work given the circumstances even when I personally didn't agree with some takes.
In the end, I really do want to remember it as the show with heart, the show that made us laugh and cry and the show that tried. The show that's unique - in both its merits and flaws. I’ll definitely miss the characters. One last time - 19!

For the fic trope ask!
I've just read two of your age difference fics, Out of my head and Throw away the oars, which is a fic trope I LOVE. But I was curious what your opinion is on age difference as a reader? 😊
thank you, it means a lot to me that you read and liked them!! 💖
okay so first of all, i absolutely love this trope as a reader too, so it's an A or maybe even an A+:
A: Love it. Spend my time combing AO3 for it.
i want to elaborate a little on this though because it's actually something i've been thinking a lot about recently. my impression is that it's sort of a divisive trope, where most people either love it or actively avoid it - like, it either speaks to you or it doesn't. for ofmd specifically, middle-aged characters finding love is a core part of canon, and a lot of people (me included) love it for exactly that. i can absolutely understand that many will see de-aging one (or both) of the characters in a fic as unappealing for this reason (and i am not here to argue that they shouldn't - don't like, don't read). then, why do i like it so much? well, there's the obvious aspect of personally finding older people hot. wanting to fuck that old man and therefore writing how a guy fucks that old man lmao. but there's also the thing that adding an age difference introduces just a liiiittle bit of sexy power imbalance and conflict, similar to lots of classic romance novel tropes. the fantasy of having a more experienced guy show you the ropes while making you feel safe and desired. when writing, i put a lot of thought into 1) the older person not taking advantage of the younger person having less life experience (and usually making them struggle with their feelings because they don't target younger love interests in general) and 2) not infantilizing or taking away agency from the younger person (they're still a grown adult fully capable of making their own choices). when i write fanfic/AUs, i see it as a playground for exploring the characters in all sorts of ways, and i think it's interesting to change things i find fundamental about canon (and wouldn't want any other way in the source material), and changing their ages provides so many meaty things and opportunities to consider.
also, i have nothing but respect for giving a character a huge pile of daddy issues and either making them go "lalalalala i do not see it (as it's staring them right in the face)" or "obviously the only way to deal with this is to fuck that old man" 😌
send me a fanfic trope and i'll grade it!

"Yeh Yung-chih (葉永鋕) [...] attended Gaoshu Junior High School in Pingtung County, Taiwan, and was often bullied by his classmates due to his gender non-conformity. In April 2000, Yeh Yung-chih was found lying in a pool of blood with serious injuries and died after being taken to the hospital. The incident led to extensive discussions about gender equality education in Taiwan."

Tomorrow This Dissonant Princess finally comes out. It’s a story for girls who are “too much,” theater kids, queer people coming together, and anyone whose healing has been nonlinear.
Look yall once again I don’t know how to work tumblr anymore but I’d like to think my book is worth reading 🫠
