Universal Music Group and TikTok Strike New Music Licensing Agreement
The two companies had been at loggerheads over royalties paid out by TikTok, with UMG pulling the music of artists such as Drake, Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga from the social media platform.
BY ABID RAHMAN MAY 1, 2024 11:50PM
Universal Music Group and TikTok have announced a new “multi-dimensional licensing agreement” that will bring to an end a dispute over royalties that saw music from UMG artists such as Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga and Drake pulled from the social media platform. Under the agreement, UMG says that its “global family of artists, songwriters and labels and will return their music” to TikTok. The two companies have been in a months-long, and very public, standoff over the royalties TikTok paid to UMG’s artists, with the music giant ultimately pulling the music from its roster of artists at the end of January. UMG even went so far as to releasing an open letter that accused TikTok of “trying to build a music-based business, without paying fair value for the music.” Signs of a growing détente between TikTok and UMG appeared in April, when it was revealed Taylor Swift’s music has returned to the platform ahead of the artist’s release of her double album The Tortured Poets Department. Now the two companies have come to an agreement that will see the music by artists represented by UMG and songwriters represented by Universal Music Publishing Group return to TikTok in “due course.” Sir Lucian Grainge, chairman and CEO of Universal Music Group, said in a statement: “This new chapter in our relationship with TikTok focuses on the value of music, the primacy of human artistry and the welfare of the creative community. We look forward to collaborating with the team at TikTok to further the interests of our artists and songwriters and drive innovation in fan engagement while advancing social music monetization.” “Music is an integral part of the TikTok ecosystem and we are pleased to have found a path forward with Universal Music Group,” TikTok CEO Shou Chew added in a statement. “We are committed to working together to drive value, discovery and promotion for all of UMG’s amazing artists and songwriters, and deepen their ability to grow, connect and engage with the TikTok community.”

UMG hasn’t been able to come to a new agreement with TikTok and they are now threatening to pull the music of all their artists from TikTok after today when the current deal empires. It will affect artists signed to UMG record labels (Niall, Liam, Zayn) as well as artists with a UMPG publishing deal (Harry, Niall).

In light of nothing actually happening during the movie vs all the clowning: I saw a TikTok mention that ALL the products in the PR packages said “March 14” on them (they thought this meant something was for sure happening), and I would actually bet my LIFE on the fact that UMG made a typo on the merch and it was easier to change the premiere than to change all the merch so they just bumped the premiere a few hours earlier

Wider theory ask here-all of the burning it down, eclipse imagery the heavy bearding. Someone on her mentioned thinking that Taylor might be “fighting” another Great War behind the scenes again. With the news today that her music is back on TikTok’s AND UMG signed that deal with Hype media and scooter AND this album fulfills the contract with UMG……. Do you think that there’s a record label split announcement coming or an announcement of Taylor doing her own record label. So many pap photos this last year were from Electric Lady Studios…. Idk I just have a weird feeling that there’s something going on behind the scenes with the mount of roses, exposure, deal with the NFL,the leaked emails with Scott swift, the weird paparazzi altercation in Australia etc in addition to the Eras Tour, even Karlies return to modeling, media acquisitions…. You need promotion for a new record label. The whole name of TTPD, department is usually a section of a buisness right? Idk just lots of interesting pieces. The last time I had this feeling it was the Lover era….
I would not be shocked by any major announcement she makes in terms of making her own big moves in the industry—we know she’s supposedly directing something?! That was such a weird little drop last year and then we hear nothing more. I agree she was purposely papped so much at Electric Lady it does seem intentional
Her using the word Chairman has always made me 😒 bc it also seems intentional vs President or CEO or Director which says to me that TTPD is more like an afterschool club or secret society Vs a business
Tumblr media
Which now that I’m extrapolating maybe it’s more imagery about her moving away from TS the Business? 🧐

Bit of a Music Business type question (If you're allowed to talk about it)- What's the process like for distributing music for a show like Hazbin vs distributing for TLT? More specifically, do you hold the same control with streaming services with the 'corporate' stuff, like, are you (Or Andrew) the one who release the songs onto services, or did you just pass off the files to someone at A24/Prime Video months ago and they take care of it all? My only experience has been with helping clients releasing songs via DistroKid and similar services as a recording/mixing engineer and I was curious how the big boys deal with that sort of thing.
On a somewhat similar note, I love how the songs from the first 4 episodes have lyrics sync'd to the music on streaming services, will that be coming for the other half of the songs?
Also just want to say how much I love what the sound editors for the show were able to do to add some flair to some of the songs, notably Mimzy's little whurrs in Hell's Greatest Dad & Carmilla's boot clanks in time with the music in Out for Love. So much talent in the crew!
Thanks so much! You are such a wonderful inspiration and great composer! (Sorry if I went overboard on the questions!)
Thanks for the compliments and I love a music business question! The songs for Hazbin are owned by A24 Music, both on the master and publishing. Not sure who they distribute with, but given that the songs are still on tiktok, I’m guessing not UMG lol
With TLT, we distribute at WMG, via 10K Projects, via OUR label Ghost Pixel Records. But it’s just distro - we own our own masters.
Re: synced lyrics, I’ll ask! And yes Hazbin’s sound editor Keith Thomas is amazing, I love the little touches he added to everything.

Rating CATB’s favorite social media
Instagram (def the favorite child)
Facebook
Twitter
TikTok (most neglected 😂)
It’s so entertaining how uneven it is to me! Would management be this bad? 🙈 In their defense, TikTok is probably last because of the TikTok vs. UMG feud. Facebook and Twitter are almost even but Facebook has slightly more posts.
This is also slightly old news but I think sometime around 22nd February, the CATB Instagram page changed their settings so that you can’t see all their followers. I used to search for Bondy and Bob there but can’t anymore. They previously never cared so I wonder if it was to stop people from searching if Bondy/Bob still followed them? But there are always other ways to check. 👀 Or did they do that so other important people (session musicians, more companies, etc.) can follow them without being found? I mean that’s how Joy found out about Wasserman and how Eleven Management was possibly their new management back in October. It’s just very interesting. 🤔

The Law Of TikTok vs. Universal Music Group
By Elizabeth Wolnik, George Mason University Class of 2024
March 10, 2024
Tumblr media
In January 2024, Universal Music Group (UMG), one of the largest players in the music industry, made headlines by announcing the removal of its recorded music from TikTok. This decision stemmed from a disagreement over licensing terms, with UMG asserting that TikTok's compensation fell short of what other platforms offered. As a result, thousands of TikTok videos suddenly went silent, signaling a significant disruption in the platform's content ecosystem.
The conflict between UMG and TikTok is emblematic of broader issues surrounding digital platforms and rights holders. For years, creators and rights holders have grappled with platforms like TikTok and YouTube, which offer massive exposure but often provide minimal financial rewards. This dynamic echoes the contentious relationship the music industry has had with YouTube in the past, highlighting recurring themes of fair compensation and the value of artistic content in the digital age.
Adding complexity to the situation is the intersection of music rights and artificial intelligence (AI). UMG raised concerns about AI-generated music and its potential impact on artists' works, highlighting the need for responsible AI practices in the industry. While AI presents opportunities for innovation and creativity, it also poses challenges, particularly regarding copyright infringement and fair use policies.
UMG's stance on AI-generated music prompted discussions on copyright laws' applicability to machine-generated content. The company's involvement in the Human Artistry Campaign, advocating for responsible AI use, underscores its commitment to addressing these challenges collaboratively. Moreover, UMG's partnership with YouTube to establish the Music AI Incubator reflects efforts to embrace AI innovation while safeguarding artists' interests.
Despite the standoff between UMG and TikTok, industry experts anticipate a resolution that benefits both parties and supports content creators and artists. However, the potential removal of UMG's catalog from TikTok highlights the broader implications for the industry, emphasizing the importance of balanced negotiations and fair compensation practices in the evolving digital landscape.

So there's 2 things that will happen here:
1 - All previously uploaded videos that have used the songs in the video will be muted. This will also mute the entire audio of the tiktok, including if the person was talking as the song played. This affects audios added via the tiktok app. All tiktoks have 2 audio tracks, the video sound and the added audio, aka the song you select from the song library on tiktok. This affects the song library on tiktok. You also won't be able to add these songs to new tiktoks, as they will disappear from the library.
2- Videos which contain the copyrighted songs playing as part of the video audio are at risk of being taken down for copyright infringement, thus giving your account a strike. 3 strikes and your account is suspended.
Nothing else is affected. Artists will still have their profiles on tiktok, hashtags will continue to exist. You just won't be able to add their songs anymore.
This is similar to what happened on Youtube years ago, and now nobody can use mainstream songs there without it getting claimed by the artist's label, which also then demonetizes the video.
For more click here.
About Harry's music (and other artists) will also be pulled from Tik Tok , What exactly does this mean, the artists' page will be deleted? every video that has the original voice of that artist is not published on TikTok? the edited with the original voice of the artist are not published? Does that mean people can't even publish their harry content there and use Harry Styles' hashtags? Hashtags no longer work? Should it be deleted? Sorry for a lot of questions (I wanted to send this to daisie but it was not possible to send an ask)
I have no idea what it means, sugar. @daisiesonafield-blog do you know anything more than what you posted?

Do you have any thoughts on UMG pulling the music of their artists from TikTok? I saw that Nathan Hubbard was also weighing in on the issue
https://twitter.com/NathanCHubbard/status/1753144826504351858
Oh Nathan - he certainly has a worldview. I strongly disagree with the idea that UMG is the artists union.
This isn't a matter of creatives vs tiktok, but instead two companies vying for power and money. Big clashes like this will shape the framework what sort of art is economically sustainable over the following decades - but that is not the core concern of the parties.
This isn't new. The decisions that made the music industry economically viable have tended to be really ad hoc balancing of forces. I've learnt a lot about those dynamics from the Money 4 Nothing podcast. They may not be everyone's vibe, but I do recommend the episode Consent Decrees to get a sense that even before recorded music, the question of how people who wrote music got paid was really fraught and ad hoc.
The fundamental problem is that music is quite hard to commodify - while incredibly valuable both in human ways and in ways that make money.
What all this context gives is an understanding that it's silly to see this as a question of wrong and right - particularly when it's two corporations having a go at each other. These sorts of arguments will be decided based on the balance of power between social media companies and record labels. Improvements fort artists will depend on them organising.
