PSA for lovely immigrants to the UK on here
My partner just got a scam call with an automated robot voice claiming there was a problem with their visa.
(Specific wording: "hello, immigration bureau. There is a problem with your visa.")
The number called from was 07359830478.
Fortunately for us, neither of us is an immigrant to the UK so we didn't even need to think about taking it seriously. Partner just hung up. But we're both hating the idea of actual immigrants getting that call, especially a refugee, anyone else in a vulnerable position, and/or anyone whose English and/or tech knowledge isn't that confident. :-( But even someone who can work out it's a scam pretty fast might get an unneeded anxiety jolt, and immigrants to here get a rough enough fucking time as it is. :(
We reported the number as spam; looks like we can't report it as a scam as we didn't lose money, it was just very obviously the opening gambit of an attempt to defraud.
I'd be tremendously grateful if some of you could reblog. The more people forewarned that this kind of nonsense is happening the better.

UK people: today is the latest you can register to vote in the July 4th 2024 General Election.
You will also need to apply for photo ID if you do not have it, or you can request a postal vote or arrange for a proxy to vote for you (they must have access to photo ID on the day).
#UK election#UK general election#UK stuff#non uk people seeing this post go check if you're registered to vote in your country/province etc.#some US states un-register people and if you have ever been convinced of a crime you will need to re-register upon release

Dr. Hilary Cass gets a Peerage!
Being a Yank I don't know the complete significance and nuance of this. But I know it's a great honor, and I respect and applaud King Charles for awarding it to Dr. Cass!

I literally do not care about the coronation but I will say this: Diana should be referred to as queen
I don't see Camilla walking into an AIDS clinic and shaking patients hands without gloves
And I don't see Camilla living up to the level of love Diana put into her charity work

I fuckin love seeing two headlines side by side; where scientists remind us that time is running out to fix our broken climate, and politicians remain utterly steadfast in kicking the can further down the road

I really hope the recent events involving A Certain Washed-Up Author result in an actual turnaround in terms of trans healthcare accessibility in this country instead of having to wait literal years just to get your first appointment, like if it only took one year or even two I would already be going through all that but the fact that it takes (from what I've read) five fucking years is really making me wish it was financially and logistically reasonable for me to move to another country where it's easier.
Although I guess that would require the NHS to also work well, which it clearly doesn't, considering the fact that I have had an appointment be rescheduled from a few months after the thing I needed said appointment for to this November, over a year after it happened.

A gripe: theatres and other spaces that use how someone's been assessed by the DWP as a guide for how disabled they are and thus what their access needs and entitlement should be.
There are no figures for the proportion of disabled people in the UK who have been under-assessed: either not granted a disability-related "benefit" that they are entitled to at all, or granted it at a lower rate/with less ability to demonstrate the truth of their situation to people like the aforementioned theatres. But we all know it's high; it's happened certainly to a large proportion of the people I know (including both my partner and me).)
So if otherwise sensible organisations would stop regarding the DWP as a good means of proving whether someone e.g. needs a free carer space when they go to the theatre? That Would Be Nice Thanks.
(Huge hat-tip to the circus I went to in the summer that just took our word for it. Seriously, you can believe disabled people over the DWP any day! Just taking it on trust is going to lead to far more accuracy.)
