She was late for everything: meals, church, trains, and, worst of all, big ceremonies. The story is told that she was even late for her Coronation and that my grandfather, exasperated, burst into her room, watch in hand, remonstrating, "My dear Alix, if you don't come immediately you won't be crowned Queen."
-Edward VIII, Queen Alexandra's grandson

Idea for the British Monarchy:
Remove the House of Windsor from power and it their place appoint Larry the Cat as monarch and head of state granting him the title of both Chief Mouser and King.
This will both maintain the tradition of the monarchy and help the nation financially during this though recession.
Larry is also known to be soft spoken and cause little drama and is a great choice for diplomacy.

The trouble with animal advocacy
Comment, Jun 26th: We need to challenge movements like Effective Altruism and campaigns for “less but better meat”
On 11 June activists from Animal Rising decorated King Charles’s newly unveiled painting to highlight the animal welfare violations at farms approved by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA). However, it is apparent that Charles doesn’t particularly align with the RSPCA on this issue, and there are rumors that he will chose not to renew the royal patronage.

Seeing a post proposing an abdication of the monarchy in 2066 going around again and like. It's a cute idea and all, but y'all do realise the whole "it's only ceremonial" thing is basically a lie and the monarchy is deeply entrenched in the entire UK political system?
The government is appointed and approved by the monarch (winning the public election is, constitutionally, only advisory)
Our money (the pound sterling) is all technically* only on loan to the Bank of England from the monarch - it is guaranteed by the monarchy
The House of Windsor collectively constitutes the largest landowner in the country
And so on and so on. Saying "the monarchy should just dissolve" of the UK would be like saying "the Supreme Court should just dissolve" of the US - it is a deeply entrenched part of the political infrastructure, and removing it would require a total reconstruction of that infrastructure.
Of course, that's not to say that we shouldn't get rid of it - only that if you are serious about republicanism in the UK, you need to recognise that nothing short of a total reconstruction of our constitutional political infrastructure from the ground up will be sufficient to disentangle and remove the monarchical rot at its core.
*ok so it's a bit more complicated than that but you get the gist.

Westminster City Council officials said they are "deeply concerned" by reports women's safety volunteers were arrested hours before the Coronation.
The Met said at about 02:00 BST on Saturday three people were arrested in Soho on suspicion of conspiracy to commit public nuisance.
Among items seized were a number of rape alarms, the force said.
The Met said it "received intelligence" people "were planning to use rape alarms to disrupt the procession".
Two women, 37 and 59, and a man, 47, were taken to a south London police station where they were questioned.
[...] Aicha Less, cabinet member for communities and public protection at Westminster City Council, said: "We are deeply concerned by reports of our Night Stars volunteers being arrested overnight.
"This service has been a familiar and welcome sight in the West End for a long time and have extensive training so they can assist the most vulnerable on the streets late at night.
"We are working with the Metropolitan Police to establish exactly what happened, and in the meantime, we are in touch with our volunteers to ensure they are receiving the support they need."
the met police really went wild with the abuse of their power in the name of our new monarch yesterday, huh?
not least because according to other articles published on this arrest, the volunteers were wearing high vis safety vests with the fucking met logo on them.

I think this photo was taken in 1934/1935, because King George V looked really tired and weak. I find it adorable that Queen Elizabeth in this photo as a child tries to imitate the solemn posture of her grandmother Queen Mary.

The mix of folks waiting for Charles III's death to come faster and folks wanting him to get well so that we don't have another royal funeral in two years will never cease to amuse me, lol.
