nightmares in fic are usually portrayed as being very abstract and complex… but I think Zoro would have very mundane nightmares. The kind of nightmares that are so close to reality that you wake up all disoriented, thinking you actually just lived through a terrible day.

I think he dreams a lot about accidents. Walking out on deck to see everyone gathered around a single crewmate, and that crewmate’s face being covered by a thin white sheet. Sanji fell from the crow’s nest while coming back from his watch. Or maybe Nami was swept up by the sea during the storm and hit her head on Sunny’s mast. They’re gone, and Zoro spends the rest of the dream in a stupor of confusion and grief. And when he wakes up the next morning, he exists in a world in which one of his nakama is dead and he has to keep marching forward without them. But only for a second.
