pairing. tyler owens x fem!reader
summary. when kate drags you back to the home for a one-week stint to help out one of her old friends, you meet tyler owens. the uncouth cowboy and his reckless actions when dealing with something as dangerous as tornados almost instantly prick your nerves until you realize maybe there's more to the cowboy than meets the eye.
warnings. description of tornados, a curse word or two, slightly inaccurate meteorological info, reader is from the midwest.
word count. 2k || masterlist
a.n. did not expect my other fic to get so much love!! sending kisses to everyone who sent me such nice words <3 and I am having a ball with all of the wonderful requests I'm getting!!
The difference between the Oklahoma and New York was more jarring than you remembered. The wide-open skies and fields that stretched for miles were a distantly familiar sight as you stepped out of the truck. You had grown up in the Midwest, smack dab in the middle of tornado alley, which meant your youth was spent listening to your cautious mother warn you every tornado season of the dangers the storms posed so youâd always be prepared when worst came to worst. Youâd hunkered down more time than you could count in your storm cellar, listening to doors rattling and the radio speak. Your father was less cautious; he enjoyed watching the storms roll in on the front porch as he listened to the distant hum of sirens.Â
Youâd never been a fan of storms, not like your father. They made you nervous; the unpredictably and devastating destruction wasnât something you found fascinating enough to chase.
Moving to New York was a culture shock but you were lucky enough to score to a job working in tandem with someone who also grew up in tornado alley. You and Kate quickly became friends, bonding over your upbringing and knowledge of the weather. She had opened up to you about her storm-chasing days, all ending with the tragedy that took the lives of three people she loved. Her story only cemented your opinion of storm chasing; it was too risky. But she had suckered you in with your love for the science behind weather, and the next thing you know you were in Oklahoma with Kate and a friend of hers on a one-week mission.
You stuck back with the team in charge of reading the data the chasers collected. Your apprehension wasnât thwarted by Kateâs reassurance, but youâd always known her to be smart and she knew those storms better than anyone. Your distaste for storm chasers was not because of those there for the science of it all, but rather those who did it for the thrill.Â
Tyler Owens was exactly the kind of person you expected to drive into tornados with no regard for the danger. What he was doing, from what you gathered from Javiâs brief explanation, was for entertainment and the excitement of facing down peril, laughing in the face of it.Â
You stretched in the nighttime air as Kate closed the truck door behind her and turned to you with the same unsure smile sheâd been carrying around since you arrived in Oklahoma. You could tell her feelings were mixed about being back there, but you also saw the spark of enjoyment she was slowly relighting.Â
âIâll go check us in,â Kate said, gesturing to the front office of the motel before she took off. You leaned against the side of Javiâs truck, yawning and taking in the scene of more storm chasers lounging around the motelâs lot, enjoying each otherâs company as you all waited for another storm to pop up amidst the outbreak.Â
The sound of boots under gravel approached you, belonging to none other than Tyler Owens himself. âHow âya holding up, city girl?â he said.Â
He introduced himself to you and Kate when you first arrived with Javi, meeting his team and the other groups of chasers who were all gunning after the same storm. She had told him the two of you were in from New York for the week, and he assumed that meant you both were born and raised there. Maybe you had lost your Midwest twang during your stay, but no matter how far you moved away, a piece of you would always remain there.Â
âJust fine, thank you,â you replied. His team had set up not far from where you two stood; they all seemed busy working on their equipment, but their work was often cut by howls of laughter. They seemed to be enjoying themselves more than Javiâs team was. Theyâd all split up into separate rooms for the night, so theyâd be ready to leave first thing in the morning.Â
He rested his arm against the bed of the truck, making himself comfortable as he too looked out across the lot at the people. âIâve always wanted to visit New York City,â he said, surprising you. That seemed like the last place someone like him wanted to go. âWhatâs it like?âÂ
You shrugged. âA lot different than this.â You looked upwards at the sky, seeing stars blinking back at you. The skies were never that dark in New York City, but the towering buildings made for a cool scene too. âI havenât lived there too long, though. Iâm still figuring it out.â You were still trying to gauge if you liked it more than home. You liked the hustle and bustle most of the time, but being back under starry skies and open plains, you had to admit you missed it a little.Â
âReally?â he furrowed his brows. âWhereâd you move from?âÂ
âKansas.âÂ
He smiled in disbelief. âWell, Iâll be damned. City girlâs not actually a city girl after all.âÂ
âIâm full of surprises.âÂ
âIâm seeinâ that.â Tyler was quiet for a moment before he asked, âDo you miss it?âÂ
You werenât sure why he asked or why he seemed to care, but you answered regardless. âSometimes. Not so much the storms though.âÂ
He laughed. âYet, youâre out here storm chasing anyway?âÂ
âIâm just here to help my friend; their business is to help people. That kind of storm chasing I can get behind, I guess. Yours on the other handâŚâ You trailed off, and he scoffed in mock offense.Â
âMy kind of business is to face my fears.âÂ
It was your turn to scoff. âBy putting yourself and your friends in danger forâŚwhat, exactly? Your internet audience? I know plenty of people like you from back home. Youâre reckless and irresponsible.â You saw Kate waving you down by the stairs of the motel, flashing a set of room keys in the air. You said nothing more to Tyler, didnât even give him a chance to defend himself, before you walked off and into your room for the night
Youâd seen devastation before following a tornado, but it was still a harrowing sight. Homes flattened, family belongings flung miles away, and people left hurt in the ruins of their town. You, Kate, and all of Javiâs team arrived just as the storm subsided and the damage was fresh as wounds many of the townspeople bared. You wasted no time going around to help people; Kate did the same.Â
An old woman sat in her front yard, carefully cradling windchimes in her arms. âAre you all right?â you asked, kneeling down in the wet grass in front of her. She looked up slightly startled but smiled kindly as she shook her head. âOh, no. Iâm just fine, dear, thank you.âÂ
âHere you go, Ms. Riley,â a familiar voice sounded from behind you. You turned your head just as Tyler appeared, holding a small box in one hand and a little kitten in the other. The woman, Ms. Riley, gasped and sat her windchimes back on the grass. She took the kitten, teary-eyed, as it purred. âThereâs food there too. Make sure you eat, and if you need more my teamâs got a table set up just down the road, all right?âÂ
âThank you,â she said.Â
Tyler said nothing to you as he began to walk away, but you followed him, not catching up with him until he was at a little table surrounded by his team. They had a stack of brown boxes they were handing out, filled with sandwiches one of the members was making quickly. They also handed out bottles of water to the line of people who had just been affected by the storm.Â
One of his team members smiled at you, holding out a box of food. âYou hungry?â they asked, but you shook your head.Â
âNo. These people need it, but thanks.âÂ
You werenât sure for a moment that Tyler was going to say a word to you. You hadnât left your last conversation on the nicest note, only to find him and his team working hard to help the ravaged neighborhood.Â
But he turned toward you for a moment, looking a little conflicted. âAt least take a water,â he said before looking at another member of his team. âLily, can you take some boxes up the road? Thereâre some people who can make it all the way down here.â She nodded, filling her arms with the boxes before she took off.
You were quiet for a moment, staring at Tyler as he and his team came up with a plan to help and feed as many people as they could before night fell. You felt a complicated set of feelings topple over you. And as Tyler started to walk away, you surged forward and grabbed his arm, forcing him to turn around.Â
âWhat can I do to help?âÂ
Together, you and Tyler spent the rest of the afternoon helping members of the neighborhood find their lost belongings and connected anyone with injuries to the EMTs working overtime. It wasnât until the sun started to set that you took a break, finding a blown-away lawn chair that was still usable to sit on. All day you had eaten your judgment and first impression of Tyler and his team. Maybe they all were reckless and a little irresponsible in their storm-chasing, but they were doing just as Kate was, helping people, just differently. He and his team apparently did that often and were some of the first responders to the damage the tornados they chased caused. You had overheard Lily tell Kate they used the money from their t-shirt sales to buy food for victims of the storm.Â
âHey,â Tyler greeted, approaching you with two boxes of food. âHere.â He handed onto to you before he found a seat and pulled it up beside you.Â
You thanked him before the two of you ate in silence for a little while. Some of the debris had been picked up, but the wrecked houses haunted the street. Youâd been lucky enough to never lose your home turning a storm, but you knew too many people who had. It was terrible. That was why you had gotten a metrology degree. You had witnessed the devastation storms brought and even though you were trapped behind a computer most days, your goal was to help improve warning systems for all kinds of disasters and ensure that people knew the best way to prepare for them, but it wasnât foolproof. Sometimes all there was to do was help pick up the pieces in the wake.Â
âI think I misjudged you,â you said, breaking the silence.Â
âYeah?â He smiled slightly, his face warmly illuminated by the ironically beautiful sunset. âAre you taking back the reckless and irresponsible comment?âÂ
âNo.â You smiled too. âBut maybe thatâs not such a bad thing. You guys did a good thing here, helping these people.âÂ
Maybe there was more to him than you had originally believed.Â
âItâs all a part of the job,â he said, a bit too casually for all of the work they actually did to help; one could say he was humble about it, which confused you even more. From the second he climbed out of his truck the first time you saw him, you were so sure you knew exactly the kind of guy he was.Â
âYou arenât exactly how I expected you to do,â you said, honestly.Â
He seemed to take that in stride, smirking at you bright enough to bring heat to your face. âWell, if you stick around, you might even get to like me.âÂ
You laughed. âDonât push your luck, cowboy.â But you had a feeling he right be right. The week wasnât over yet; you still had time to figure out exactly who Tyler Owens was.Â

Tyler Owens x wife!reader
A/N: so Iâm obsessed with Glen Powell and of course I had to do a little something with Tyler Owens because Glen looked so good in that movie. Hope you enjoy!
SUMMARY : After chasing a tornado, Tyler suggests the team take a break in his hometownâa place none of them have ever visited, except Boone. To their surprise, they discover that Tyler shares his home with a pregnant woman he refers to as his wife and a young boy he calls his son.
WARNINGS : fluff, Tyler being head over heels for his wife, cuteness, some inaccuracies regarding tornadoes
3.4k words
The sun was just beginning to set as the red truck and van rumbled down the dusty back roads of the Arkansas countryside. Tyler Owens was behind the wheel, relaxed but focused, his hands steady as he navigated the familiar terrain. In the passenger seat, Boone sat with an easy grin, the kind only a best friend could wear, fully at home in the quiet camaraderie of the ride. He occasionally glanced at Tyler, clearly anticipating something more than just a pit stop.
In the back seat, Lily was hunched over her tablet, reviewing footage from Cairo, her drone. âThe inflow jets were insane,â she murmured. Boone snorted, swivelling to glance at her.
Boon leaning towards Tyler with a raised eyebrow whispered so only Tyler could hear him. âSo, when are you gonna drop the act? I know where weâre headed.â
Tyler chuckled, but his eyes stayed on the road. âGuess it was hard to slip one past you, huh?â
âYou think?â Boone replied with a smirk. âWhat gave it awayâoh, I donât know, maybe the fact that Iâm Jakeâs godfather?â
Tyler shushed him, not wanting Boone to spoil the surprise. Of course Boone knew about your existence and of your son. Boone had been Tylerâs best friend for years, even before they started YouTube. He had been there when you guys met, started a relationship, got married, had your son and the last time he was there was for your gender reveal.
Lily leaned forward and turned toward Tyler, a crooked grin plastered across her face. âAlright, Ty, spill it. Where the hell are we going? Youâve been suspiciously quiet since we left the highway. And now youâve got Boone whispering stuff into your ear. When has he ever been this quiet?â
Tyler chuckled but kept his eyes on the road. âRelax, lily. I told you, weâre heading to my hometown. Figured we could all use a real bed and a home-cooked meal for a change. Motel breakfasts are starting to taste like cardboard.â
Dani, who talked from the radio given that she was behind in the Van, raised an eyebrow. âYour hometown? Tyler youâve only ever talked about it once, what is there to do here really? Is there some sort of catch?â
âNo catch,â Tyler replied smoothly. âJust thought you guys deserve something better. And I figured itâs finally time you meet someone really important to me.â
The rest of the team stayed curious and said nothing more. They trusted Tylerâhe had proven himself time and again in the chaos of the storm-chasing world. If he said they were in for a treat, they believed him.
After another twenty minutes of winding roads and open fields, Tyler turned onto a long gravel driveway lined with vibrant green grass. The farmhouse at the end of the drive came into view, its white paint glowing softly in the golden light of the setting sun. Animals roamed nearby, adding life to the picturesque scene.
The team climbed out of the Truck and Van, stretching their legs and taking in their surroundings. The farmhouse was surrounded by rolling fields, with a red barn off to one side and a small garden near the porch. The air was warm and smelled faintly of wildflowers and fresh hay. There was a small lake in front of the farmhouse surrounded by fences.
âWow,â said Dexter, the least chaotic team member. âItâs⌠peaceful.â
âYeah,â Tyler said softly, his voice carrying a hint of nostalgia. âIt is. Home sweet home,â Tyler said as he approached the house more.
Boone followed his pace, grinning. âAh, the Owens family ranch. Been too long since Iâve been here.â
âYouâve been here before?â Lily asked, surprised.
âSure have,â Boone replied. âIâm practically family.â
The front door creaked open, and you stepped onto the porch, wearing a white top stretched slightly over your rounded belly and a pair of jeans. Tylerâs cowboy hat sat snugly on your head, the one he hadnât worn in years. Your face lit up the moment you saw him, a smile breaking across your lips.
âThereâs my troublemaker,â you said warmly, your accent as sweet as honey.
Tylerâs grin widened as he climbed the steps, pulling you into a gentle hug careful not to press too hard against your belly. âHey, darlinâ. You look beautiful.â
Boone didnât hesitate. âY/N! Look at you, glowing as always. Howâs my niece?,â he said, bounding up the steps to greet you. He hugged you warmly, then ruffled your hair affectionately. âAnd still stealing hats, I see.â
You laughed. âGood to see you too, Boone. Babyâs fine. And yes, itâs mine now.â You turned back to your husband and hugged him once again. The hug felt like home. After days worrying for your husband he was finally back home and in your arms.
The team hung back awkwardly, unsure of what to do. Dexter was the first to break the silence. âUh, hi. Iâm so confused right now.â
You laughed loudly, your eyes twinkling. You knew the team must be confused, as Tyler had never spoken about you unless it was with Boone. âYâall must be Tylerâs team. Iâm Y/N. The wife.â
Upon the reveal, the team let their mouths hang open in shock. They never imagined Tyler out of all people would be married with a kid on the way. He was always the reckless one, the first to jump into danger. Nobody ever really thought about him potentially having a family, with the way he was. They also didn't expect Boone to have known and let this a secret for so long. That man can never shut his mouth.
Tyler turned back to his team, gesturing for them to come closer. âEveryone, this is Y/Nâmy wife. Y/N, meet the crew: Boone you already know, This is Dexter, Dani, and Lily.â
You smiled warmly and waved them inside. âYâall must be starving. Tyler called ahead, so I made enough food to feed an army. Come on in and make yourselves at home.â
As the group filed into the house, Lily glanced at Tyler, her eyes wide with surprise. âYouâre married? And⌠youâre going to be a dad?â
Tyler grinned sheepishly, scratching the back of his neck. âYeah, I guess I never mentioned that, huh? Meet the real reason I get back in one piece after every chase.â
The house was cosy, filled with the comforting smells of roast chicken, fresh bread, and apple pie. The dining table was already set, you had clearly gone out of your way to make the team feel welcome.
âThis is incredible,â Lily said, taking a seat at the table. âYou really didnât have to go all out for us.â
You waved her off with a laugh. âOh, please. Tyler told me how hard youâve all been working. Besides, I saw the live stream of that last tornado. Yâall are insane, by the way. I thought Iâd reward your bravery or, well, craziness with a good meal.â
Boone leaned back in his chair, grinning, finally happy to be home. âItâs both, Y/N. And that tornado was a beauty, wasnât it?â
âDid you see the way the funnel shifted when it hit that open field? Classic EF-3 behaviour.â Tyler suddenly asked as he turned to you. You smiled at the excitement in your husband's voice, nodding towards him. Despite dropping out and never finishing his career in meteorology he was quite well educated in the field of tornadoes.
Dexter nodded, his voice animated. âAnd the inflow jetsâdid you catch those? Perfect conditions for a multi-vortex system.â
You chuckled as you started serving the food. âI donât understand half of what youâre saying, but I could tell yâall were thrilled. It was like watching kids on Christmas morning.â
As the conversation flowed between all of you, a soft noise interrupted. From the staircase next to the dining room came the sound of small, hesitant footsteps.
Everyone turned to see a little boy, about three years old, standing at the bottom of the stairs. He was rubbing his sleepy eyes with one hand, clutching a worn stuffed bear in the other. His curls were tousled from sleep, and he blinked at the group with a mixture of curiosity and shyness.
âDaddy?â the boy said softly, his voice thick with sleep.
Tylerâs expression melted. âHey, bud,â he said, getting up from his chair. He crossed the room in a few strides and knelt down to scoop the boy into his arms. âWhat are you doing up? Thought your momma put you to sleep for the afternoon.â
The boy rested his head on Tylerâs shoulder and mumbled, âI Had a dream.â
Tyler kissed the top of his sonâs head and held him close. âItâs okay, buddy. Daddy 's here.â
Boone chuckled, leaning back in his chair at the sight of the small kid. âThere 's my boy. Come here, kiddo.â
Jake squirmed out of Tylerâs arms and ran to Boone, climbing onto his lap. Boone greeted him with a fist bump. âWhatâd I tell you about staying up past your bedtime, huh?â
Jake giggled. âUncle Boone!â
The rest of the team stared, dumbfounded. Dani finally blurted out, âWait you knew about this?!â
Boone shrugged. âOf course. Iâm his godfather and uncle. Perks of being Tylerâs actual best friend.â
âEveryone,â Tyler said, turning back to the group, âthis is Jake, our little man.â
Jake lifted his head from Boone's shoulder and looked at the team, his big brown eyes scanning the unfamiliar faces. âHi,â he said shyly.
Lily smiled warmly. âHi, Jake. Iâm Lily. Itâs nice to meet you.â
You walked over and gently ruffled your son's curls. âJake, these are Daddyâs other friends. Theyâre going to stay with us tonight.â
Jakeâs face lit up. âReally?â
âYep,â Tyler said, bouncing him lightly. âAnd you know what? I think they might even make pretty good aunts and uncles, donât you?â
Jake giggled, his earlier sleepiness forgotten. âYeah! Now I have more people to play with!â
âThatâs right buddy.â Boone smiled, hugging the kid one last time before he jumped out of his lap and went back to his fathers embrace.
The meal progressed with a light-hearted warmth that settled over everyone like a blanket. Boone and Dexter were animatedly recounting their most chaotic storm-chasing moments, while Dani and Lily chimed in with their own tales. Jake sat on Tylerâs lap, happily munching on a slice of buttered bread, his small hands gripping the edges of the plate to keep it steady.
You observed the scene with a soft smile, your hand resting on your growing belly. Tyler caught your gaze as he let his free hand rest on top of the one holding your belly. He smiled down at you. He was happy to be home.
âYouâve done good, sweetheart,â he said, his voice low but full of admiration.
She tilted her head, her smile widening. âCouldnât have done it without you, Ty.â
The team exchanged subtle glances, sensing the affection radiating between the two. Lily, unable to resist, leaned over to you. âYou two are adorable. Whatâs your secret?â
That caused a laugh out of you. âOh, itâs no secret. Just a lot of patience and knowing when to call him out on his nonsense.â You shot Tyler a teasing look, and he feigned innocence.
âHey now,â Tyler said, grinning. âIâm a perfect angel.â
Jake looked up from his plate, his face lighting up with a mischievous grin. âDaddyâs silly!â
The table erupted into laughter, and Tyler tickled Jakeâs sides, eliciting a burst of giggles from the little boy. âCome on Bug, eat all your food. Donât want you to be hungry later.â You looked at your son as you gently grabbed his bread and gave it to him. Gently caressing his forehead and kissing his cheek lovingly. All while Tyler stared at you with adoration in his eyes.
As the evening wore on, You excused yourself briefly to check on the dessert. Tyler took the opportunity to follow you into the kitchen, leaving Jake to sit back on Boone lap and be entertained by the team.
The kitchen was warm and cosy, filled with the comforting aroma of apples and cinnamon as you carefully pulled the steaming pie from the oven. You moved with practiced ease, placing it on a cooling rack, when suddenly you felt a familiar presence behind you.
âNow, what do I have to do to get my hands on a slice of that?â Tylerâs voice was low and teasing, the grin audible in his tone.
You smirked, not bothering to turn around. âDepends. Are you talking about the pie or me?â
Tyler laughed softly and stepped closer, slipping his arms around your waist, his front pressed against your back. âBoth, but letâs start with you.â He leaned in, brushing his lips along the curve of your neck.
âTy,â you said, your voice half a warning, half a giggle. âWe have company, remember? We donât want Boone to catch us again do we?â
âTheyâre busy stuffing their faces and trying to keep Jake from giving Boone another black eye,â he murmured, his lips trailing to your ear. âBesides, I donât get moments like this nearly enough.â
You sighed, leaning back into his embrace. âYouâre impossible, you know that?â
âAnd youâre gorgeous,â he countered without missing a beat, his hands sliding up to rest gently over your growing belly. âAnd carrying my baby girl? That makes you even more irresistible.â
You carefully turned in his arms, bow facing each other as you rested your hands on his chest. âYouâve got a silver tongue, Mr. Owens. Has it ever gotten you into trouble?â
He grinned, his hazel eyes sparkling. âOnly when Iâm not careful. Lucky for me, I married a woman who keeps me in line.â
You laughed, shaking your head. âYouâre not so cocky now, are you?â
âOnly with you,â he said, leaning down until your foreheads touched. âWell, and maybe with Jake when he gives me that little puppy-dog look. Kidâs got my heart wrapped around his finger. Can never say no to him.â
You laughed softly, holding his figure even more, not wanting to let go. You leaned your head on his chest, looking sideways outside the window to the sun that illuminated your home.
âYouâre incredible, you know that?â he murmured as his chin rested upon your head.
âAnd youâre a shameless flirt.â
âGuilty,â he admitted, pressing a soft kiss to your temple. âBut seriously, I just wanted to thank you for this. For all of it. I know itâs not easy having me running around the country chasing storms.â
You turned in his arms, eyes meeting his. âTy, I knew what I was signing up for when I married you. I wouldnât have it any other way. Besides, you always come back to us. Thatâs what matters.â
His expression softened, and he placed a hand gently on your belly again. âAnd soon, thereâs going to be even more reason to keep coming back.â
You placed your hand over his, your smile tender. âSheâs going to love you just as much as Jake does. Maybe even more if she inherits your stubbornness.â
He chuckled. âLetâs hope she gets your patience instead.â.
Your expression softened as you traced a finger along his jawline. âYouâre a good dad, Tyler. I see it every day in how Jake lights up around you. And I know youâre going to be just as amazing with our daughter.â
He kissed you softly, a lingering tenderness in the way he held you close. âThatâs the plan, sweetheart. Keep coming back to you, Jake, and this little one. Always.â
The moment was interrupted by a loud crash from the dining room.
âJake!â Booneâs voice carried through the house. âWhy am I always the bad guy?â
âIt wasnât me!â Jake shouted back, his voice ringing with childlike defiance.
You groaned, pulling away with a reluctant smile. âGuess Iâd better rescue Boone before Jake recruits the others against him.â
Tyler laughed, giving you a playful smack on the ass as you walked away. âDonât take too long, baby. Iâm still waiting on that pieâand you.â
You threw him a teasing look over her shoulder. âBehave, Ty.â
When you stepped back into the dining room, Jake was perched on Dexterâs lap, gleefully recounting how Boone had âknocked the chair over all by himself.â Boone stood nearby, arms crossed and feigning offence.
âFor the record,â Boone declared, âthis kidâs already mastered the fine art of scapegoating.â
âI learned it from Daddy!â Jake said with a giggle, earning a roar of laughter from the table.
You sighed, shaking your head as you started slicing the pie. âI see Jakeâs picking up all your best habits, Ty.â
Tyler grinned shamelessly, taking a seat next to you. âCanât blame the kid for wanting to be like his old man.â He reached over to ruffle Jakeâs curls, then turned to you. âBut if you want to keep us in line, youâd better bring that pie over here before we all riot.â
You rolled your eyes, setting the pie on the table with a grin. âYouâre lucky I love you, Tyler Owens.â
He leaned back in his chair, giving you a wink. âLuckyâs an understatement, baby. I hit the jackpot.â
â˘â˘â˘â˘â˘â˘â˘â˘â˘â˘â˘â˘â˘â˘â˘â˘â˘â˘â˘â˘â˘â˘â˘â˘â˘â˘â˘â˘â˘â˘â˘â˘â˘â˘â˘â˘â˘â˘â˘â˘â˘â˘â˘â˘â˘â˘â˘â˘â˘â˘
As the last bite of pie was finished and the laughter around the table quieted, you leaned back in your chair, feeling satisfied but a little tired. Tylerâs gaze met yours across the table, his expression softening with concern as he stood up, stretching his back.
âWe need to clean up.â You muttered under your breath, ready to stand up until Tyler pushed you gently back down to sit.
âAlright, everyone,â Tyler said, his voice carrying the gentle authority that always seemed to get things done. âYouâve all eaten, now itâs time to let my wife take a break. Sheâs been working hard today.â
Jake, who had been leaning back in his chair, looked confused. âWhy do we need to clean up?â
âBecause the Missus said so,â Tyler interrupted with a wink, his playful grin lighting up his face. âAnd trust me, when the Missus speaks, everyone listens.â
You couldnât help but smile at the playful banter between them, but you appreciated how Tyler always made sure you werenât overburdened. It was his way of showing care, in everything from big gestures to little moments like this.
One by one, the team began to rise from the table, and soon enough, the dishes were being cleared away. Boone and Dexter were the first to take charge of the plates, laughing as they competed to see who could load the dishwasher faster. Lily helped wipe down the table, while Jake, who still looked a little reluctant, finally took the trash bag outside with Booneâs encouragement.
It didnât take long before the kitchen was tidied up, and the team filed out to check on the horses. You watched them from the window as they made their way to the stables, chatting with Jake in tow, all smiles and laughter. You felt a contentment settle over you, watching the scene from your peaceful spot inside.
Tyler, noticing that you hadnât moved from your seat, stepped toward you and held out his hand. âYou need a break, too,â he said softly, as if reading your thoughts. âCome on, letâs get some fresh air.â
You stood, taking his hand, and together you walked outside to the front porch. The soft evening light bathed the world in golden hues as you made your way to the rocking chair. Tyler sat first, patting the seat next to him, and you sank into the chair beside him, leaning back with a sigh of relief.
Tyler settled beside you, his hand resting gently on your baby bump. His thumb traced slow circles, a tender gesture that made your heart swell. You closed your eyes for a moment, letting the gentle rocking of the chair soothe your tired muscles. The sound of the teamâs voices echoed from the stables, a distant hum of joy and energy, but it felt far away from the calm you found in this quiet moment.
You rested your head on Tylerâs shoulder, your fingers resting over his hand on your belly. âTired?â He asked you, noticing your calmness and weight on his shoulder.
âNo. Iâm just thinking about how much I missed you.â
He kissed the top of your head, wrapping his arm tighter around you. âMissed you more. And I mean it, Y/N. Everything weâve built here⌠itâs the reason I keep going. The reason I come back.â
Your eyes glistened as you looked up at him. âYouâre the reason this feels like home, Ty.â
He smiled, tilting your chin up so he could kiss you again, slow and sweet. âThen I guess weâre even, Baby.â

Hers
She came home for safety, familiarity, to find her way forward but instead, she found herself more lost than when sheâd arrived.Â
It was only supposed to be a week. Sure, Kate thought it would be difficult to be back in the field but she hadnât anticipated this. She hadnât anticipated him. It shouldnât matter. She had a job in New York, a life, a stable, safe job, her own apartmentâeverything she needed. But was it everything she wanted?Â
What Tyler had said crossed a line but that didnât mean it wasnât the truth. It was just something she probably already knew, deep down, and hadnât wanted to accept. She was running away from the storm but she should know better than most that it would always catch up.
With an aggravated sweep of her arm, all of her past research was on the floor, pages floating around her before finding a place to land. She almost immediately regretted the mess but it had felt good. For the last five years, sheâs avoided risk but now it almost feels hypocritical to say that she misses it.
Kate bent to gather the papers but only grabbed a few before stopping at her Cloud Physics notebook which had fallen open to a familiar page. She sat down in front of it and traced the impressions of her writing on the pages. It was too much to retrace her steps, to consider what had gone wrong. She needed to get out of her head and she couldnât do that without getting out of this damn barn.
She knocked lightly on the kitchen door so as not to startle her mom. Being an adult, Kate felt an aversion to putting these things on her mom. Her mother had always been supportive, even when knowing her daughterâs passion was actively putting her in danger. Maybe she just didnât want her mom to repeat the same sentiments as Tyler but she also knew she wasnât about to come to any decision without some guidance. Just like seeing her middle school science project again, she felt like a child standing in the kitchen.
âKate?â
âYeah, itâs just me.â She sighed and pulled out the chair at the dining table that had always belonged to her. The smell of whatever her mother was stirring made her stomach grumble. âWhereâs Tyler?â
âOh, he drove pretty far so heâs getting cleaned up.â Kate could tell her mom was trying to sound uninterested, maybe for her sake but still she asked, âWhatâs his story anyway?â
âHeâs just some internet star from Arkansas,â She explained, picking at a stain on the table. For a moment she thought about leaving it at that but the fire he had lit in the barn was still burning inside her. Sardonically, she added, âHeâs made a living as a so-called âTornado Wranglerâ but so far heâs only shot some fireworks into a cyclone and nearly killed the reporter signed on to cover him and his team.â
Her mom chuckled and replied, âSounds like a man looking for a thrill to me.â
Again, she felt like a child relaying the latest gossip from the schoolyard but she couldnât help but continue.
âAnd his whole team is this ragtag group of people whoâve never been to school for this either!â
âI see.â
âI mean sure heâs studied meteorology but they could get seriously hurt.â Kate had busied herself by fiddling with a napkin sheâd pulled from the homemade holder. The shreds of it were getting smaller and smaller. âTheyâre no professionals.â
Her mom hummed, acknowledging her annoyance but countered with, âWell he doesnât seem too bad to me, he did drive all the way here.â Although her mother graciously spared her the âfor youâ that they both knew completed that thought, she felt its weight. It was easier to make him seem unlikeable than tell her mom that it was her that was in the wrong.
âYouâd believe me if you saw the shirts he sells, his face all sprawled across them.â Kate laughed, thinking of the cheesy slogans. It wasnât lost on her that she had assumed the worst of him. She thought back to what Lily had said and felt ashamed. âThough,â She conceded, âthe money does pay for food for the aftermath survivors. They were handing it out at the last town we were in after the tornado hit.â
âNot all bad then?â Her mother turned fully to face her and Kate knew her teasing expression said all she needed to know.
âI guess not.â
_ _ _
Dinner had been passable, if not enjoyable. Kate had figured it would be awkward, that the dynamic between her and her mom would be offset by Tylerâs presence but it had flowed easily. The only gripe she had was that her mother had gone over her head to invite him to stay the night. In her ideal world, she wouldâve ushered him out right after dinner saying a quick thanks for his concern but sending him on his way knowing that sheâd never have an obligation to speak to him again.Â
Tyler had, of course, helped her mom with the dishes, leaving her to watch awkwardly so as not to take up unnecessary space in the small kitchen. Sheâd shot him a tight smile as heâd excused himself to his room for the night.Â
âWell,â Her mom said from the doorway, âIâm off to bed. Shut the lights, will you?â She didnât wait for an answer as she made her way past the living room to her bedroom.Â
Kate tapped her fingers sporadically against the table, the sound echoing in the quiet house. She hadnât been fully present for dinner. Every time she looked at Tyler she could only think about what she was doing wrong, what she was missing. As much as she resented the fact, there was no way she could make peace with the past couple of days if she didnât get in another word with him.
She flipped the last of the switches off and made her way up the stairs, avoiding the ones she knew were extra creaky. At the landing, Kate considered just going to her bedroom but her feet kept their integrity and trudged her towards the guest room.
Her hand was poised to knock when the door opened.
âKate?â The sound of his voice combined with the unexpected image made her jump. Whatever she had been prepared to say had left with her surprise but Tyler was already speaking again. âListen, what I said in the barn was out of line I shouldnât haveââ
âNo you shouldnât haveâŚbut you werenât wrong either.â
Stepping back, he opened the door a bit more and though it wasnât quite an invitation. It was a line she wasnât sure she wanted to cross with his apology and her admittance the gist of what sheâd hoped for. She promised herself that if he didnât try to say anything else, sheâd just turn around and walk away. He bit his lip, seeming to wrestle with something the same way she was.
âWhatâs the story behind you and Javi?â The question surprised her and she felt a vague excitement about his interest or rather the fact that he was interested at all. But the story itself was not something she was sure she could share.
âWe met in college, he was friends with myâŚmy boyfriend at the time.â
Tylerâs eyebrow raised in a silent question before he said, âAnd your boyfriend he wasâŚâ
She couldnât stand in the hallway any longer where she was fully open to his scrutiny whether the story inspired pity or something else. Kate stepped past him into the room and started to explain,
âHe was in the accident, along with two of my best friends.â She folded her arms across her chest, in a way trying to shield herself from the memories. âWe were testing the polymer on what we thought was an EF1 butââ
âIt was an EF5.â She nodded and his lips shifted into a sympathetic frown. Kate sat on the edge of the bed so that she didnât have to face him head on.
She continued with, âSo, I quit school and packed up to New York. Javi went back to Miami but because of the outbreak he thought he could use a second pair of eyes and invited me on.â From her peripheral, she could see the way he nodded along as she spoke, the genuine compassion still written in his features. She shrugged, unwilling to allow herself to feel the extent of the situation and the memories in front of him, âNone of it matters though, Iâll be back in the city by the end of the week anyway.â
âYou mean youâre giving up?â Tyler asked like it was somehow a personal affront to him or some greater injustice. Kate wasnât sure what he cared. Theyâd only just met and he didnât know her, not really.Â
âIâm not giving up. I canât live like this again, risking my life every day.â
âBecause of the accident?â The way he said it, like it was only a passing moment and not something that monumentally changed not only her life but her, made her response sharp.Â
âYes, because of the accident.âÂ
He was unshaken by her hostility and placed a hand lightly on top of hers where it sat between them on the bed.
âKate, Iâve seen people get hurt too, Iâveââ She couldnât listen to this, couldnât have him reduce her experience by comparison. If he thought this was the way to change her mind, he was sorely mistaken.
âYeah, Tyler, well I got hurt. I watched people die, and Iâll bear those scars for the rest of my life.â Her body filled with tension of the memory as her breath began to quicken. She let the anger take over, the simplicity of it easier than the complicated truth. âI don't know why I evenââ
 âHold onâKate!â
Kate could feel the air his failed reach created as he tried to grab her wrist to stop her. She was fast though, spurred on by the singular goal of getting the hell away from him. When she made it to the threshold of her room, she moved to shut the door. It almost slammed fully closed but groaned as the wood crashed into the foot heâd managed to snake in.
âGo to bed,â She demanded.
âSo what, youâre going to help Javi line the pockets of Riggs for the rest of the week? The real estate shark that's directly profiting off the suffering of these people?â It seemed he couldnât help, was adept at, pushing her buttons. If she were any bolder, sheâd have already struck the self-righteous expression off his face.
âI didnât know about that, I would have neverâthese are my people but this isnât the way, the polymer didnât work and people died because of it.â
âMore will too, but only if you donât do anything.â He tried to reach for her again but she shrugged away, âIt could work. Together we could do this.â Tylerâs expression was pleading, his eyes urging her to make the right decision.
âGoodnight, Tyler.â
His
The flight was thankfully uneventful and much easier than her last flight to Oklahoma when sheâd been dreading the very idea of her return. There were still memories that haunted the place she called home but now she could rest assured that they werenât losses for nothing and that she may very well be able to save someone, hopefully many someones, from the same suffering she had endured for years.
Kate dragged her suitcases through the airport and the bustle of people coming and going made her feel oddly comforted. New York was easy to get lost in and for the time, it was exactly what she needed. But it had only ever been a place she ran away to and after a while she was running too fast to ever see it for what it was. Here, in Oklahoma, she was home.
She made her way out to the pickup lanes and was met with a calm blue sky, one that she knewâor maybe even hopedâwouldnât last. At the five-minute mark, Kate was unbothered. By ten, she considered concern. By twenty, she was on the phone. It took three calls getting sent to voicemail before her mother picked up on the fourth.
âHey, are you alright?â She tried not to sound too concerned but it wasnât like her mother to forget an obligation or to not pick up the phone.Â
âOh, sunshine, Iâm fine. Itâs my truck thatâs acting up,â Her mom replied. âI was on the road already when it decided to quit on me. Iâm not sure how long repairs are going to take. You want me to call someone for you?â Kate sighed, more relieved by her motherâs well-being than bothered by the situation.
âNo, donât worry about it,â She answered, âAs much as you donât like it, I am a big girl. I can take care of it.â
âI know you can, baby. Donât worry about making it here tonight, just take care of yourself.â
They exchanged âI love youâs before it sunk in that actually did have to take care of it. She found herself a spot on a nearby bench and tucked her luggage in beside her. Scrolling through her contacts, her thumb hovered over Javi before something urged her to keep going. Kate wasnât sure if this was a bad idea but lately, she could handle a little risk.
âHello?â She bit her lip, knowing this was her last chance to turn back. Still, he might not even be around or available to get her.
âHey, Tyler?â
âUh, yeah?â His voice was in performance mode, his uncertainty no match to his inherent charisma. Kate found herself filled with an urgent hope.
âIt's Kate, Kate Carter.â
âKate!â She could hear the smile in his voice. It was the first time sheâd called him since he gave her his number and she was just beginning to regret not using it sooner. âWhat uhâŚwhat's going on?â
Her stomach flipped at the realization that she had to explain herself, that she wasnât just calling him. Oh god, was this a mistake? Kate had thought there was something there when they were saying goodbye but maybe this was pushing it. Â
âAre you in Oklahoma by any chance?â
âI am actually,â Tyler replied before he, with a hopeful tone, asked, âAre you here?â
âDo you think you could pick me up from the airport?â She fought the urge to cross her fingers like a little girl. It wouldnât be the end of the world if she had to call Javi but she couldnât help but want to see where this path led.
âOf course!â Her chest tightened, a mix between excitement and worry. âIs everything alright with your mom?â Kateâs cheeks flushed, touched by his concern.Â
âYeahâtruck just wasnât starting, donât worry,â She said, hoping she sounded nonchalant.
âAlright then, Iâll be there as soon as I can.â In the background, Kate could hear his keys jingling already and she smiled to herself.
âThanks so much. Bye.â
_ _ _
Kate had been inside, sitting at a cafe when her phone buzzed in her pocket, Tyler letting her know that heâd made it. She tossed out her empty coffee cup before regathering her things and taking a deep breath. If she was being honest with herself, she was excited to see him but she didnât want to endure the inevitable teasing sheâd be subject to should she seem too eager to be in his presence.
The sliding doors opened and it took her a minute to spot the familiar red truck. Her eyes followed the path to where Tyler was busy basking in the attention of an adoring fan. What more could she expect?
âAnd did you want this signed cause I could definitely sign this for you.â
He didnât notice as she siddled up, even with the rumble of her suitcases on the concrete. She shook her head at the display of his âTornado Wranglerâ persona and thought better than to let him off the hook.
With the exaggerated voice of a dedicated fan, she implored, âOh my goodness! Is that Tyler Owens? I am your biggest fan!â
âThatâs me darlinâ, what can I do forâKate.â He cleared his throat and straightened out his posture, putting on the real Tyler at the sight of her. Kate bit her lip, sparing him the laugh that threatened to escape her.
âTyler,â She said, âYou look good.â
âWell, I feel good.â Tyler stood with his hands on his hips, the two of them alone now and it seemed neither of them knew just what to say. She laughed at his remark and began to heave her luggage into the bed. Before she could lift the larger of the two bags, Tyler was stopping her with a hand on her wrist. Kate looked up at him, confused.Â
âDonât make me make you get in the truck.â She glared at him, gauging whether or not he was serious. He only matched her expression. âGet in the truck,â Tyler repeated.
Kate rolled her eyes and climbed into the passenger seat. She couldnât help but lean over toward the shift, running her fingers across the buttons. Her pointer finger landed on the tape labeled, âKateâs Barrelsâ and traced over his writing. When the driver's door opened, she jumped at the movement and tore her hand away.Â
âHeaded to your momâs?â Tyler asked, fingers tapping a rhythm onto the wheel.
âUh, no actually just any motel close would be good. Homeâs a bit far and the flight was long. I just want to go to bed.â She reminded herself that that was the only reason.
âIâm close,â He told her. Since when was he close? âI mean you could stay in my guest room and I could take you back to Sapulpa in the morning?â The idea sounded as equally dangerous as it was appealing. With a motel, she was in control of the situation but his place? There was no knowing.
Clearing her throat she answered, âThatâŚsounds fine.â
Tyler tipped his hat toward her and then he was making his way out of the parking spot. For a little while, they sat in comfortable silence, the radio filling the empty space between them. Once they were outside the city, it was comforting to watch as farmland made up her view. The word rattled in her head again. Home.
âSo, how did it end up going with the investors?â He asked. âGood, I assume since youâre back in Oklahoma.â Kate couldnât help but smile knowing well enough already how happy heâd be to hear. Not to mention how happy she was to achieve something sheâd been chasing since the possibility entered her mind.
âYeah, it went very well actually. We uhâwe got a lot of people interested and the offers were so goodâŚI quit my job and sold the apartment. Iâm back, back.â
Tylerâs smile grew to a million watts as he exclaimed, âKate! Thatâs amazing!â
âThank you, weâre really excited.â She thought she saw his grin falter a bit but she couldnât pin down why. Still, after a moment he let out a whoop, honking the horn at the expense of the car in front of them. Kate laughed, placing her hand over his to keep him from doing it again.
âSo, where you planning on living? With Javi?â
âActually Iâm not sure yet. Javi has this new girlfriend from back in Miami and theyâre pretty wrapped up in each other.â His eyebrows raised and she continued, âMy mom's kind of out of the way too. Plus, sheâs thinking of selling since seed prices just keep going up. Says sheâs sick of the weather.â
Tylerâs jaw went slack, exaggerating his shock. âSick of theâSick of the weather?â
âWhat can I say, she doesnât appreciate the beauty of the storm.â Kate sighed theatrically. Her hand went to her forehead in a âwoe is meâ gesture. He chuckled, punching her playfully in the arm.
âOn the topic of prices though, she is right.â Tyler sighed as he turned onto a new street. âThatâs why I bought land and started from the ground up.â
âLand?â She repeated. It hadnât been that long that sheâd been gone. When and more so why had he decided to put down roots and outside of Arkansas for that matter.
âYes, maâam.â His mouth quirked up in a prideful smirk.
âAnd here I thought Iâd be sharing some shitty motel room.â
They pulled into a long dirt driveway, the grass surrounding it still young. While the house was clearly new, the style had a nostalgic feel to it. It was painted a fresh shade of cream and the white wrap-around porch just screamed summer nights. If she didnât know better sheâd think she was going to visit some sweet old lady.
âHere we are, home sweet home.â
Tyler opened her door for her like a proper gentleman and she stepped out into pleasant fresh air. The whole thing was picturesque. Kate supposed she shouldnât really be surprised considering she didnât really know his tastes but the whole thing surprised her nonetheless.Â
She followed Tyler through the front door as he carried her bags inside. The interior was just as sweet as the exterior had been but Kate could see the signs that were uniquely him. There were various piles and pieces of gear strewn about that she recognized from having filled her motherâs house with. Even with the classic style, the appliances and layout were tastefully modern. She was impressed.
Kate stepped into the kitchen which seemed to be the most lived-in room. There were pictures of the Wranglers and what she assumed was his family stuck to the fridge. Her eyes drifted to a bulletin board hung up next to it and tacked up in the center of it was a page ripped out of their article from Ben, one with a picture of her. She could feel her cheeks flush even with him still in the other room. Though she wanted to, Kate knew she wouldnât mention it.
âYou hungry?â She jumped at the sound of Tylerâs voice.
âNo, I couldnâtââ The same look that urged her to âget in the truckâ painted his face and she reconsidered her answer. âStarved.â
Tyler seemed satisfied. He pulled out a seat at the kitchen island where she could have a clear view of him whipping something together. The whole thing felt unnervingly domestic but she enjoyed it all the same.
âThis place is really nice, Tyler,â Kate said. Gesturing toward his tricked-out home officeâthat was maybe a little too nice for a YouTube starâshe pointed out, âGot a nice setup too.â
âYeah, the team has pretty much paired off and they live here and there but we come back for a warm meal more often than not.â
âNot you though?â It had crossed her mind that maybe the sudden home ownership had been a response to some sort of serious relationship. She tried to sound casual since it wasnât really any of her business.
Tyler smiled and shrugged. âNah, a fearless leader has to hold down the fort.â Kate rolled her eyes and laughed at his cockiness. It was better knowing that it didnât run deep. She thought better than to push it but still, she wanted to know what this whole thing was for.
âNo, but seriously, why a house?â
âOklahoma is the past, present and future of tornadoes. Thatâs no secret,â He replied like it was some well-known slogan. Yeah, the outbreak they experienced had put Oklahoma back on the map but Tornado Alley spanned a wide area, including Arkansas.Â
âHow do you figure?â
âWell youâre here, arenât you?â Her stomach sank, trying to decipher the meaning behind what he said. His focus was trained on the pot in front of him like what heâd said was no big deal. What was she supposed to say to that?
Without an answer, Tyler clarified, âYouâve got better instinct than anyone Iâve ever met, better than any Doppler too.â
Heâd turned to her and winked in her continued silence. Kate nodded with a smile like it was casual to her too. She shifted under his intense gaze and thought it was an apt time to break the tension with something sheâd been tossing around in her mind. He laid a plate of spaghetti in front of her before sitting down himself. She cleared her throat.
âI was going to wait to bring this up butâŚI was wondering if you would consider being partners.â
âReally?â The excitement on his face was genuine and Kate could see the surprise too. It made her feel secure in her decision.Â
âJavi and I both have stakes in it but heâs avoiding the field as much as he can right now. Heâs got the business side under control but, like I said, heâs got someone at home whoâd prefer he didnât get blown away.â
Tyler stayed practically frozen in place. Maybe sheâd overstepped her bounds after all. She could tell herself all she wanted that she wouldnât be hurt if he didnât want to partner with her but that didnât make it the truth.Â
âWhat do you say, me and you?â Kate asked, bracing for his answer.
âYou and me,â Tyler replied genuinely and with what she hoped was a hint of awe.
They ate silently, half from hunger and half in consideration of their future. As much as Kate didnât want to admit it, there were other questions lingering between them. When her plate was cleared, he insisted on taking care of the simple cleanup himself leaving Kate to sit idly at the kitchen table, unable to get anywhere else without his direction anyway.
With the dishes washed, Tyler turned his attention back to her but it seemed he had just as much of an idea of how to proceed as she did.
âSo, uhâŚâ She began, uncertain where she was going.
âI bet you probably want to get cleaned up. Thereâs an en suite in the guest room.â
âYeah, great.â As much as she wanted to bolt, Kate got up from the table slowly as if she were as calm as could be. Still, she didnât wait for any instructions as to where to go. She didnât turn back to look at him as she climbed the stairs, internally cursing herself for adding to the awkward atmosphere.
âFirst door on the right!â Tyler called after her because, of course, she hadnât asked.
_ _ _
The warm water had been just what she needed, especially paired with the time away from Tyler to think. As much as there had been a sense of tension between them, her feelings had settled on contentment and maybe even excitement. They were partners now and they had plenty of time to figure everything and anything else out. Theyâd been through hell already and he would help her through it again.
She stepped out of the shower, her feet hitting the plush bath mat, and reached for a towel. Her hand grabbed only air. Upon further inspection, the towel rack was completely unoccupied. Shit.
âUm, Tyler?â Kate called. She waited a few minutes for his response and when it didnât come she yelled louder. âTyler!â She let out a breath when she heard his footsteps on the stairs.
âYeah?âÂ
âThere are no towels in here!â
âShit. My bad, no one has used that bedroom yet,â Tyler explained. His feet were already causing the wood floor to creak when he assured, âIâll grab you one, be right back.â
Kate couldnât believe this was happening. There was a good chance that sheâd expose herself in the exchange. Sheâd even left her clothes on the bed, choosing to strip before going to the bathroom.
A few minutes later there was a hesitant knock on the door.
âHere, I brought you a few. I donât know what you prefer,â Tyler said.
She had to assume that he was smart enough not to look. Heâd been nothing but polite after all. When she opened the door, his eyes were covered by the palm of his hand, and his other arm was extended out to her. Kate tried not to laugh at the look of him.
âThanks.âÂ
Kate wrapped the largest towel around herself and used another to dry the excess moisture from her hair. She pulled the door back open, assuming he was gone but she was met with his figure, eyes still shielded. Nearly bumping right into him, she let out an involuntary sound something between a squeak and a groan. Tyler echoed the sound and quickly flipped his hand so he could see her. She had to assume that his subsequent turning around was motivated by her state of undress.
She didnât know what else to do besides starting to dress. It seemed he wasnât done talking to her just yet. After a moment, he spoke.
âUh, KateâŚI, uh, realized I didnât say thank you just then for considering me.â
âWho else could I possibly consider?â She winced at her own words. By no means did Kate want to sound like she was unhappy, she just didnât want to make it a big deal between them.
âWell, right, I guess thereâs not many storm chasers to begin with and especially not ones whoâve studied meteorology.â Kate could hear the slight hurt in his voice even as he tried to tease and she couldnât blame him. Sheâd said the wrong thing. She quickly finished pulling on her pajama pants so she could focus on the conversation before she said something else she regretted.
âTyler,â She said softly. He still had his back considerately turned to her. Like a kid trying to pass notes in class, Kate tapped his shoulder to get his attention. Tyler smiled as he faced her and it gave her the boost she needed to say what she wanted. âYouâre the reason Iâm doing this in the first place. You believed in me even when I didnât. Weâre going to be helping people and thatâs because of you.â
He was shaking his head before sheâd even finished.
âYou canât believe that, it's your polymer, your ideaââ
She took a confident step forward, the action effectively shutting him up. The closer Kate got the more she angled up at him, his height towering over her. Her hand found its way to his jaw, cupping it gently, her thumb brushing over the stubble of his skin. Before she had the chance to close the distance, Tyler took his chance to capture her lips with his own.
It started slow, hesitant to the possibility of too much too fast but quickly gained momentum as they threw caution to the wind. It had been years since Kate had done this, never quite feeling able to move on from Jeb and the accident but now with a sense of closure and Tylerâs guiding hand she felt ready.
His mouth was eager as their kiss deepened, Tylerâs tongue painting the inside of her mouth, almost as if he was committing it to memory. Their heavy breaths filled the air and neither of them seemed willing to break the kiss as the minutes went on. It wasnât until her fingers played at the hem of his shirt that he broke off, looking down at her through hooded eyes, his mouth swollen and flushed.
âKateâŚâ
The sight was too much and she couldnât help but bring her lips back to his skin. They found purchase at his pulse point, kisses littering his neck as she made her intentions known to him with every touch.
Taking a step back, Tylerâs hands cradled her face and he searched her eyes, looking for what she wasnât sure but when he seemed to find it a smile broke across his face. It was the same smile he sported every time the wind picked up and the radar lit up red: a man ready to face a challenge.
âYou still wanna stay in my guest room?â He asked, though his joking town was limited by his heavy breathing. Kate knew he was teasing but he was just as eager as she was.
âIf you keep up with that attitude I just might,â She replied, smiling ruefully.
âHoney,â Tyler beamed, âall Iâve got is attitude.â
A chuckle escaped her lips and his face turned from cocky to sincere before he leaned in to steal a kiss once more. His hands moved from her face to grasping her own as he led her to what she assumed was his room.
Kate struggled to keep up as he held his hands behind him for her to grasp. She held them awkwardly as the unusual position did not grant her a good grip. The playful air gave her butterflies but also made her feel a sense of safety, knowing that things didnât have to be heavy between them.
Tyler turned, pulling their hands over his head so that Kate twirled around with him. He used the momentum to guide her backward into his room with his hands on her hips, attempting a cheesily seductive smolder. She used her heel to kick the door shut behind them.
Kate walked ahead of him to go sit on the edge of his bed. She could tell he was watching her closely to consider his next move but she enjoyed the idea of playing coy with him. Ignoring him, she took in the space which was surprisingly sparse especially compared to the ground floor.
âWow, real homey in here,â Kate joked, feigning awe at the blank walls
âOh, hush,â Tyler chided, âIt hasnât been that long since we finished construction.â
She put up her hands in surrender and replied, âSure, sure.â He rolled his eyes at her and then his expression became soft again. Tyler walked forward, kneeing her legs open and standing between them. With just a tilt of her head they were kissing again and this time when she grabbed his shirt, he let her take it off of him. Kate paused a moment to take him in, the image one she intended to commit to memory before pulling her own shirt over her head.
The rest of their clothes came quickly but when it was time for her to remove her jeans she hesitated.
âWe donât have to do this.â Tyler reassured her, misreading her reluctance. Kate shook her head.
âIt's not that itâsââ She huffed in frustration and rather than continue to overthink, pulled her pants down in one swift motion, hoping heâd move past the interruption rather than linger on the issue.
Instead, his eyes moved immediately to her lower half and zeroed in on her legâŚher scar. Kateâs stomach began to churn. She knew that he knew the story but she hated that it had to be part of this moment between them. He had been part of making it possible for her to redeem herself, to make sure the losses were not worth nothing. Still, the memories and the physical signs would never leave her. It made her insecure but if he had a problem with it, this wasnât worth continuing.
âIs this fromâŚâ
âYes,â Kate replied flatly. She didnât have anything to prove and she wanted more than anything to move on from this as soon as possible. Tyler looked up from the marred skin on her leg and cupped her face with one of his hands. His eyes were filled with pure admiration.
âYouâre the strongest person Iâve ever met.â
Tylerâs lips were on hers again as he leaned her back into the bed, his body sculpting to hers. She felt a hand trail down her body, over her ass, before he hoisted her leg over his shoulder, his face turning towards her thigh and kissing over her scar as he lined himself up with her entrance. He looked at her until she realized he was waiting for her cue. She grabbed onto his upper arms and nodded, making it clear she was ready.
He was slow with her, caressing in all the right spots and making sure she was comfortable until he was finally fully inside her and they moaned in unison at the feeling. She hadnât felt like this in a long time and when he took a moment to brush the hair from her face it made it all that much sweeter so much so that she laughed. Tyler looked at her, concerned but when she kissed him, he smiled into it catching her drift.
As he began to grind into her, he coaxed mewls from her lips, her hips meeting his instinctually at the pleasure. The way he watched her carefully for her reactions made her heart soar. He made it evident that they were in this together, that he cared about making her feel good. One of Tyler's hands still held her leg while the other found her clit, circling it while keeping pace and she couldnât help the words spilling from her mouth.
âTyler,â Kate pleaded, âDonât stop.â He listened to her demand but she could see how it made him falter. His expression was that of awe as if he couldnât believe that he was here with her, that she was enjoying what he was doing for them. She curled an arm around his neck and played with the hair there in a way that caused him to flush.
âI gotcha,â Tyler promised, somehow pressing them closer together, âI gotcha.â
She couldâve been embarrassed at how fast she came but Tyler didnât give her a chance, instead riding her out through her climax and continuing to thrust even after. It was almost too much as tears of pleasure pricked her eyes and her moans filled the room. Her hands gripped the sheets, his arms, his hair, anything that she could reach to keep hold of her senses as they were overwhelmed. All she could think or comprehend was Tyler.
âIâIâm close,â He stammered, the tremble in his voice radiating throughout his body, âKate, Iââ
Her vision went white when she came again, though she could hear Tyler moan her name like a mantra, his head buried in her neck. One hand reached into his hair while the other traced absent circles on his back. It took him a minute but eventually, he came back to her.
âHey,â He said, letting out a breathy laugh.Â
âHi.â
Tyler pressed a lingering kiss to her forehead, clearly savoring the moment. Kate didnât want it to end either but she was confident that it was only beginning. They both let out their own versions of a disappointed noise as he pulled out.
When he disappeared into the ensuite, she pulled his comforter up around her, the scent of him enveloping her as well. He came back with a damp towel and once helped her clean up, he flopped into bed beside her, pulling her into his side.
Kate placed a hand on his chest, feeling his steady heartbeat under her palm. Tyler pressed a kiss to the top of her head. She wanted to bask in the moment a bit longer but before she knew it she was beginning to yawn.Â
The last thing she remembered before she fell into a peaceful sleep was the sweet kiss they shared and the soft rumble of his voice.
âGoodnight, Kate.â

Stormâs Eye (t.o)
Request: @lonelyghosts-stuff âHelllllllo! I hope you are doing well! I was wondering if I could request a Tyler Owens x Reader enemies to lovers fic? I am such a sucker for that trope especially if it's like actually enemies who hate each other but then grow to care through shared experiences and learning about each other. Angsty and life and death stuff. Just super tropey lolâ
AN: Iâve been trying a new writing style where I donât write in the first person but rather the third person, but still using Y/N. Let me know what you guys think!
The sky was a bruised shade of purple.Tyler Owens was behind the wheel of his truck, eyes flicking between the horizon and the radar screen. He gripped the steering wheel, every fiber of his being tuned into the storm brewing in the distance. This was what he lived forâchasing the thrill, the danger.
Beside him, Boone and Javi were having a conversation about the best burgers in Oklahoma, but Tyler wasnât paying attention. He was more concerned with staying ahead of the supercell that was beginning to form just over the ridge. His mind raced with calculations, predictions, and strategies, keeping track of the storm's trajectory in his head.
Then there was her.
Sitting in the backseat, quietly scrolling through the radar on her own tablet, was the new meteorologist Javi had brought onto the team. Y/N Y/L/N, the woman who had already gotten under Tylerâs skin.
âWhat do you think, Tyler?â Javi asked, peering over Tylerâs shoulder. âY/N says we should head north and catch the storm as it loops back around.â
Tylerâs eyes snapped to the rearview mirror, catching Y/Nâs gaze. Her eyes were sharp, confidentâlike she thought she knew everything there was to know about storms. It irked him.
âNorth?â Tyler scoffed, his voice laced with irritation. âWeâre wasting time if we go north. The stormâs going to pivot east, not loop back. If you want to catch it, we need to stay on this road and head southeast.â
Y/N leaned forward, her expression calm but firm. âThat stormâs got a hook echo forming. Itâs going to swing north before it turns east. If we stay southeast, weâll miss the rotation.â
âMiss the rotation?â Tyler barked a laugh. âIâve been chasing storms for years, and I know this system. Youâre just reading the radar. I can feel it.â
Her jaw clenched, but she didnât back down. âYou think Iâm just looking at a screen? Iâve been in the field, too. And Iâm telling you, if we donât adjust course, weâre going to be too far south to catch anything.â
Javi glanced between them, trying to keep the peace. âHey, guys, how about weââ
âIâm the leader of this team,â Tyler interrupted, his tone hard. âWeâre sticking with my call. We go southeast.â
Y/N crossed her arms, frustration simmering beneath her composed exterior. Tyler knew she was good at her jobâJavi wouldnât have brought her on if she wasnâtâbut that didnât mean he had to like her stepping on his turf.
âIâll be here when you realize youâre wrong,â Y/N muttered under her breath.
Tyler pretended not to hear, though her words festered in the back of his mind.

The next few days followed the same pattern. Y/N and Tyler clashed over nearly every decisionâwhere to set up, what direction to head, even which equipment to use. The rest of the team, Boone, Javi, Kate, Lilly, Dani, and Dexter, watched their arguments like spectators at a tennis match, unsure of how to intervene.
âMaybe you should cut her some slack,â Boone suggested one evening after a particularly heated argument.
Tyler grumbled something incoherent and shook his head. Y/N was too smart, too stubborn, and way too sure of herself for his liking.
Later that night, while the others were fast asleep in the small roadside motel they were staying at, Tyler found himself unable to sleep. His mind was still buzzing from the day's chase, from the constant butting of heads with Y/N. He slipped out of his room and headed to the small, makeshift lounge area by the vending machines. To his surprise, Y/N was already there, sitting in one of the chairs with her nose buried in a weather report.
He hesitated, then finally walked over and sat down across from her. They sat in silence for a few minutes, the only sound being the low hum of the soda machine.
Finally, Tyler broke the silence. âWhereâd you go to school?â
Y/N glanced up from her report, raising an eyebrow. âWhat?â
âI asked where you went to school,â he repeated, a little softer this time. âIâm just curious.â
She closed her report and leaned back in her chair. âUniversity of Kansas.â
âReally? Thatâs a good program.â Tyler couldnât help but be impressed, though he kept his tone neutral.
Y/N shrugged. âItâs close to home. My dadâs still there, and since my mom died a few years ago, I didnât want to leave him alone for too long.â
The admission caught Tyler off guard. He hadnât expected her to open up like that.
âHeâs the one who made me want to be a meteorologist,â she continued, a small smile tugging at her lips. âWhen storm season would roll around, heâd stay calm. No matter how bad it got, heâd explain what was happening so I wouldnât be scared.â
Tyler was quiet for a moment, processing her words. âThatâsâŚthatâs pretty cool.â
Y/N looked at him, her eyes softer now. âWhy did you start your YouTube channel? Seems like an unusual hobby.â
Tyler rubbed the back of his neck, unsure of how to explain. âI started it because if it helps even one person know what signs to look for, where to take shelter, and it saves livesâŚthatâs the goal. Storms are dangerous, but the more people understand them, the better their chances.â
Y/N nodded, and for the first time, Tyler saw something other than frustration in her eyes. They had more in common than he realized. âI was a bull rider before this.â He spoke. Not sure why that was the first thing that came to his mind.
âReally?â She questioned. âYeah, I was pretty good for a while. But too many bulls to the head, I wanted to get out before I became a vegetable. When deciding what to do next, I remembered how I felt during my first tornado. I knew I was supposed to be scared, my aunt was freaking out in the driverâs seat. But I couldnât help but feel excited by it. Remembering that feeling helped me decide to go back to school.â Tyler explained.
âI guess youâre not all bad, Owens.â Y/N teased. âYouâre not so bad either, Y/N.â Tyler replied, a small smirk on his face.

Tyler thought that after their late-night conversation, things might start to smooth out between them. But when they were out in the field the next day, the old tension returned.
Y/N was insisting they head west, while Tyler was adamant that they stick to the eastern route.
âYouâre not thinking clearly!â Y/N snapped, pulling out her map and pointing to the storm's trajectory. âThe data shows the storm shifting westward. If we donât move now, weâre going to miss the funnel!â
Tylerâs frustration boiled over. âIâm the leader of this team, Y/N. My decision stands. Your opinion doesnât matter.â
The words were out before he could stop them, and the effect was immediate. Y/Nâs face fell, all the confidence and fire draining from her. Her lips pressed together, but she didnât say anything. Just nodded and turned away.
As she walked back to the van, guilt gnawed at Tyler. He knew what he said had hurt her more than he intended. He knew the sting of being dismissed in a profession dominated by men, and heâd just done exactly that to her.

The storm that day was worse than any of them had expected. The winds picked up suddenly, driving rain slashing sideways across the open plains. They had barely made it into a small town when the tornado sirens began wailing.
âGet to the storm shelter!â Tyler shouted to the team over the howling wind.
Y/N was running beside him when something caught her eye. She stopped dead in her tracks, looking toward the edge of the street where a young golden retriever, still basically a puppy, was tied to a telephone pole barking frantically.
âY/N, come on!â Tyler yelled, but she shook her head.
âI canât leave him,â she shouted back, running toward the dog.
Tyler cursed under his breath and sprinted after her. âY/N, you canâtââ
âI have to save him!â she interrupted, fumbling with the leash as the wind whipped around her, making it nearly impossible to untie the knots.
For a terrifying moment, Tyler thought they were both going to get swept away by the storm. Without thinking, he grabbed her hands and pulled them away from the leash, then used his pocket knife to cut it.
âLetâs go!â he urged, pulling her to her feet.
She scooped up the dog, and they ran together toward the storm shelter, barely making it inside before the worst of the storm hit.
Y/N collapsed against the wall, clutching the trembling dog in her arms. âThanks,â she panted, a breathy laugh escaping her lips.
âDonât ever do that again,â Tyler said, though his heart was still racing from fear, not anger.
She just smiled weakly in response.

When the storm passed, Y/N was outside, kneeling beside the dog and handing out food and water to the townâs residents who had been affected. Tyler watched her from a distance, unable to shake the fear heâd felt when he thought she wasnât going to make it.
He walked over to her, his voice softer than usual. âThat dogâs not going to let you out of his sight now.â
Y/N smiled, ruffling the dogâs fur. âHeâs our new team mascot.â
Tyler crouched down beside her, his tone serious. âI was scared. I thought you werenât going to make it. And it made me realizeâŚIâve been awful to you because I liked you. I was scared of how I felt.â
Y/N blinked in surprise, her cheeks flushing slightly. âYou liked me?â
âYeah,â Tyler admitted. âAnd I thinkâŚI think I still do.â
Y/N smiled, her voice soft. âWell itâs a good thing that I have feelings for you too, Tyler.â Tyler let out a light laugh before leaning in ever so slightly
Just as they were about to kiss, Boone appeared out of nowhere, grinning like a fool. âSo, whatâs the plan, lovebirds? Heading back on the road or what?â
Tyler groaned, but Y/N just laughed, the tension between them finally gone, like the storm that had just passed.

âPromiseâ - Javier âJaviâ x Kate Carter & F! reader (angst!)
someone asked for a part two and I realized how good of an idea that was lmao. I need indirect ways to incorporate my past experiences into my fics anyway.
part one
prompt: you made a promise to distance yourself from Javi and Kate
TW: mentions of smoking, some detailed mention of self harm, suicidal thoughts, mentions of nausea, disordered eating, breakdowns, smoking, angst :(
Do NOT proceed if the triggers mentioned above upset you greatly. You have been warned.
I made a promise
To distance myself
Once Tyler dropped you off to the train station, you smiled and waved until you couldnât see his truck anymore. You wanted to hang onto any last string of familiarity for as long as you could.
Especially since your life would change completely - for better or worse.
You took a deep breath, closing your eyes for a moment, trying to calm down your trembling body.
5, 4, 3, 2, 1.
5 things you see - the train station, the crumbling yellow bricks, the jolly red-white-blue american flag, your luggage, and the people. Lots of people.
4 things you hear - the people, obviously, the cicadas crying, the heavy bell ringing inside, the honking of cars for you to get out of their way.
3 things you smell - the heat - somehow, the smell of smoke from cars, and the thick air.
2 things you feel - terrified. hurt.
1 thing you taste - bitterness.
Shaking your head, you take another deep breath. Eyes dead set on the mission in front of you, you marched into the train station, bought a ticket to Oklahoma City, and settled down inside.
But now was the hardest part; waiting. What made it harder was you didnât want to think about anything that happened yesterday. So, putting your headphones on, you made a playlist with none of the songs that reminded you of Javi or any of the ones he recommended to you. Essentially, you just listened to 3 songs in total, over and over again, but the knowledge you knew what was coming next was comforting, something you couldnât apply to your current situation.
Took a flight, through aurora skies
Honestly, I didn't think about
How we didn't say goodbye
Just see you very soon
You woke up when the train jolted to a stop - you had fallen asleep, waking up to hear the opening notes of some song you were listening to earlier. Looking out the window, you reached Oklahoma City. With a sigh of relief and trepidation, you got your bags and headed out of the station, hailed a taxi to the airport. Booking a last minute flight back home to LA, you made your way to the gate. Setting your bag down, you sat in a char near the huge windows. Deciding it wasnât close enough, you sat on the little raised platform attached to the window and leaned your head against it like you saw so many children do.
The boarding call was announced, and everyone sat up groggily. It all went by pretty quickly. Standing in line, getting your boarding pass stamped and your passport checked, finding you seat, putting your bag away and sitting down. Taxi and take off was a blur; luckily you got a window seat, and stared out at the pink clouds, tinted by the setting sun, a peach tone.
Peachy, just like your favourite pie.
You groaned, covering your eyes and rubbing them as your mind started to think about Oklahoma. About Javi, and the last time he saw you. And the last thing he said to you. It wasnât even a proper goodbye, but you couldnât blame him because he didnât know it was goodbye.
And honestly, neither did you.
But you made yourself a promise - to distance yourself.
Those last words of his echoed in your mind.
âI- Okay, alright. Take care, (Y/N)â
It hurts to be something
It's worse to be nothing with you
You half expected a text from Javi - it had been around 24 hours since you last saw him. Since you told him you had a âfamily emergencyâ to take care of. Who wouldnât expect a little âyou doing okay?â or âsafe travelsâ when someone saw you break down in the middle of a field, distressed as hell? Sure, you and Javi werenât dating, sure you both drifted apart ever since Kate got closer with him instead, but were you two not even friends anymore?
Did you mean nothing to him?
This wasnât the first time he ghosted you - after the EF5 tornado, he didnât say a word to you. But it was understandable why - everyone was hurting, and maybe he couldnât bring himself to talk to you. In Oklahoma, the only times heâd talk to you is when you started a conversation, otherwise you could sit silently and heâd happily talk with Kate, leaving you be. It was never him starting anything.
And Kate. Did she figure out you liked Javi? Is that why she didnât text you? Did she feel guilty? Part of you wanted her to feel guilty, but the other part of you didnât want to be pitied. Part of you wanted to go back, but this - this was best for you right now. Nobody could tell you otherwise.
Instead, you got a text from Tyler.
âhey there cowgirl - how you getting along?â
You chuckled - âcowgirlâ was probably the worst way to describe yourself. Instead, you typed down a response, your heart a little less heavy.
âhey, Tyler. thanks for asking. means a lotâ
He was typing, the three dots appearing on screen
âof course. lemme know if you need anything at all okay? stay safe out thereâ
You sent him an affirmative text, thankful to actually have a friend who cared enough to check in on you, helping you out without questioning anything, having only known you for a week.
So I didn't call you
For sixteen long days
You found comfort in some form of familiarity in your life; back home in LA, everything looked duller, more still. Like the whole world knew about your heartbreak and was mourning, or mocking you. You tried to plunge into work, distracting yourself but sometimes, youâd just stare at your work, screen or paper, and just zone out. Your was brain still trying to process everything, and you were losing a lot over it - sleep, peace, overall joy, your will to wake up, and more.
It felt like after the EF5 tornado but worse because you knew somewhere in Oklahoma, Kate was with Javi, both of them happier than ever. It felt worse because you could never have him anymore. He was gone. And someone got to see him every day, sometimes wake up next to him, sometimes stay up all night with him. You felt like you were gonna be sick.
For a fortnight, all you could eat was cheese, bread, and grapes. It was the only thing you could keep down.
It was so hard not to text Javi. After you had just left, itâs like you were isolated for 5 years, given a taste of him, then forcing yourself to stay away. It was something you chose to do, not something you were forced to live with.
But you wonât call him. No matter how long the days felt they were dragging by.
And I should get a cigarette
For so much restraint
Walking by a drugstore to entertain yourself, you entered the establishment with an electronic ding notifying your presence. Strolling through the ailes, you picked up Sourhead Extremes (so in case you wanted to call Javi, youâd have to go through a gustatory agony first) and some nail polish, just to look pretty. Walking to the cashier, you mindlessly threw in a pack of cigarettes onto the counter, before putting them back in a jerky motion.
âWhat the hellâŚâ you murmured to yourself, ashamed of what you were about to do. Buy cigarettes - to smoke.
Walking out of the store briskly, you speed-walked home; chiding yourself for almost ârewardingâ your no contact mission by smoking, you realized how truly pathetic you were.
âGod, what is wrong with meâŚâ you muttered, keeping your head down, watching the wet streets reflect the light of the sun and your dark sorrow.
No matter how long I resist temptation
I will always lose,
Eventually you did buy the cigarettes. You went home, lounging in your bed, a pretty china plate acting like an ashtray for you. Legs up in the air, swinging occasionally, eyes half lidded from the light high, you felt the chalky smoke fill your lungs, watching it come out in little clouds of grey air.
You felt in control for the first time since leaving Oklahoma - the cigarette sitting pretty between your red tinted fingers and lips. You smiled softly, satisfied by finally scoring a small win. You didnât tell Tyler that you smoked. Heâd say itâs a horrible habit you should give up.
Obviously it was more of a lose - giving into an impulse, and now you were at risk of falling deeper into addiction. You werenât in control, you never really were.
But why would you make yourself feel worse when you were on the literal brink of crumbling?
Although, you didnât get addicted. After the high wore off, you felt disgusted, throwing out the pack of almost full cigarettes. You wouldnât tell Tyler, of course.
It hurts to be something
Itâs worse to be nothing with you
Two weeks went by, and though you pretended everything was okay, it really wasnât. You didnât know if you missed Javi or not, but you really didnât want to.
You donât know if you want to see the face you loved so much, the face that lights up when he sees Kate, the face that Kate holds, kisses, caresses.. the face that she admires alongside you.
You wanted to get over him, you really did, but you cared so much about him. You didnât want to stop caring about him, when loving him felt so⌠lovely.
But it hurt so much.
You barely got any sleep this past fortnight. Having a reverie about the man who daydreamed about another woman. The things you wished he did to you, he did to Kate. He was hers. So assured, so confident. No doubt in that.
For a fortnight, there you were, stripped of any text backs from him.
You were starting to think you just wanted his attention, which you dont know if you wanted anymore, knowing his attention belonged to Kate. Why would you care so much about him texting you?
But then again, werenât you two friends?
Iâve done the math
Thereâs no solution
Weâll never last
Why canât I let go of this?
Right now, you, broken, needed comfort. May it be fake hope again. Nobody was there to stop you anyway, so in your free time, you started to think of the ways Kate and Javi would have problems with each other.
âSheâs too arrogant sometimes, and heâs really down to earthâ
âShe canât communicate her feelings!â
âKateâs one to settle, Javi isnâtâ
Of course, you knew it was wrong. Of course it was a bitchy thing to think. But who were you to care right now?
You were hurt, and you needed to feel better to even try and start to get a grip on reality. you didnât want to rip of the band aid yet.
Not yet.
Even worse, your mind started thinking of ways you and Javi could get together; Kate could leave him in the dark again, she could get into a fight with himâŚ
But nothing made sense - she wouldnât leave when she looked at him that way⌠and any fights would be cleared quickly with Javiâs forgiving nature.
He would do anything for her.
All in all, you realized how shitty you were being, and texted Tyler, saying you couldnât hide from Javi - couldnât hide from the pain that haunted you. The bright lights of LA looked dull. The sun felt like a false light.
Your world was falling apart, how could the sun be shining when your world was falling apart?
âJust walk around. Wear something that makes you feel good. Grab some good lunch downtown. Spoil yourself. Act like a damn tourist, I donât care. Just do anything that reminds you that thereâs more to life than Javiâ he wrote.
So I broke my promise
I called you last night
I shouldnât have, I wouldnât have
If it werenât for the sight of a boy who
Looked just like you standing out on Melrose AvenueâŚ
It hurts to be something
Itâs worse to be nothing, with you.
Three days later, you sat on the roof of a building. The sun was setting, you looked at the streets below. People were walking - their dogs, their toddlers, and whatnot.
You were so disappointed with yourself. Closing your eyes, you thought back to everything that happened yesterday.
Following Tylerâs advice, you woke up ready to face the day.
Waking up bright and early, you went for a run, saw some pretty things on the way. You found it insane how easy it was to overlook the small things in life.
Coming home, you made breakfast; oatmeal with bananas, almond butter and chocolate chips. You savoured every bite with a smile.
You hopped into the shower, using your favourite body wash. Putting on an outfit, doing your hair and makeup, slipping on your shoes, you left the house, ready to explore the cityâŚ
All was going well until sunset.
â
You were walking along the streets of LA, acting like youâd never seen anything like it before. A coffee in hand, you walked confidently down the path, turning a corner to browse a bookstore on Melrose Avenue, when someone caught your eye.
A boy, waiting for the light signal to turn green, who looked exactly like Javi.
You froze.
Suddenly, you didnât want coffee any more. You didnât want anything right now but to go home.
â
You rushed home, trying so hard to control your breathing, then stumbling desperately to your room. As soon as your face crashed against the pillows, the soft, gentle fabric a perfect medium to absorb the tears now flowing down your face. You sobbed, curled into a still-bedazzled ball on your bed, hugging yourself, contracting into a fibonacci.
Reaching for your purse, you pulled out your phone, scrolling through your contacts. Through the wet and blurry lens of your tears, you scrolled into the alphabet until you reached the âJâ section. The first name was Javi.
Pressing on his name, then the âcallâ button, you held it to your ear, taking shuddering breaths as you tried calming yourself down. The your phone cooed like a pigeon, signalling his phone, somewhere in Oklahoma, was ringing.
You were clean. Clean for a little over 2 weeks. Clean from his voice ringing in your ears, new words exchanged and whatnot.
But as you held your phone in your hand, crying, watching it reach Javiâs phone, waiting for him to answer, it all felt like a relapse.
Like the feeling of the cool blade on your skin, slicing through, leaving an angry red river in its wake.
The sick, high feeling you get from it - the ecstasy, watching you destroy yourself, finding beauty in the rubble.
Some part of you, the logical part of you was screaming to press the red button. To leave Javi alone. It wasnât fair for you to reach out first, right? Why would you make a fool out of yourself by calling him? Youâre not that desperate for him, are you?
But the hurt, emotional, desperate part of you didnât, daring him to answer. Just to remind him of your existence. Just this once.
Still fighting the internal battle, you delved deeper into why he didnât call you yet.
Did Kate tell him everything? Did she finally find out? Did she realize at all about how hurt you were?
The anger only just started to hit you, claiming your brain as a new population to be corrupted, a new host for the parasite, a new fruit to rot.
You were mad. You didnât know at who. But you decided you were mad at Kate. For dating him. You knew it was wrong to be mad, because you had no claim over Javi, but you were too deep into your anger to actually think of a better way to cope. Suddenly, you were so mad at Kate. So, so mad. Part of you wanted to tear your house down, scream like a mad woman, but you didnât. Your dwindling self control kept you in check.
Then came the sadness. You were so mad at Kate, but she was so happy right now. She didnât care or know how your felt right now. how hurt you felt right now. She had Javi. Her Javi. And they were both happy - oh so happy, oh so blissfully unaware of how you felt right now.
They were happy - they were perfectly fine without you. Because they didnât need you as a friend, not like they did in college - maybe they didnât back then either, because they had each other. Thatâs all they needed. Each other was all they needed.
You were so deep into the crevices of your mind, drowning in both pain and relief, you almost didnât hear your name drenched in Javiâs voice coming from the speaker.
â[name]?â

i never lie (t.owens)
hi omg this is my first full-length tyler fic! actually my first full-length fic in like 3ish years so pls be kind đ this one is based off of the song i never lie by zach top, with a few little changes! i recommend listening to it beforehand but i donât think you have to to understand whatâs happening! i hope you like it đĽš
warnings. a few curse words, implied female reader but no actual pronouns i donât think, implied smut but itâs like one sentence, and general bad writing lol, plus i really like commas apparently. lmk if thereâs anything i missed!
pairing. tyler owens x reader, slight scott x reader
word count. 2k
ę° well, itâs been some time, you still look like an angel ęą
ę° i heard youâre doinâ fine, got promoted back in april ęą
it had been four months since youâd seen the infamous tyler owens when you spotted him across a random bar in nowheresville, oklahoma. âoh, hell,â you said, spinning your stool towards javiâs at the bar and putting a hand over your eyes.
âwhatâs the matter?â he asked, glancing behind you. âoh,â was all he muttered as he silently got up from his stool.
âwait, where are you going?â
âyouâve got company, darlinâ,â he murmured before slipping behind you and out of sight. you spin your stool once more, confused, when you see him. âtyler,â you sigh.
âlong time no see, honey.â he settles onto what was once your friendâs stool with a frustratingly beautiful smirk. âdonât you look gorgeous as ever.â
âdid you need something, tyler?â you ask, trying to gather yourself. seeing him here four months after your breakup was jarring to say the least. you figured heâd probably be in this area. there were some massive storms that were supposed to come through within the next few days. you just didnât know heâd pick this bar to grace with his presence.
âjust surprised to see you here is all,â he said. âcanât believe they finally let you out of the office and into the field.â
just a month after your breakup with tyler, you started a job working with storm par. even though you hated what they stood for, all you wanted to do was help victims in the aftermath of destructive tornados. now that you obviously werenât working with tyler and his crew anymore, you moved on to the next best thing, making it your mission to help instead of hurt. through everything, you had remained close with the rest of the wranglers, keeping them updated on your life. when tyler heard of your new position, he was absolutely livid. he couldnât believe youâd move on to âsleeping with the enemy,â as he called it, just one month after the devastating, explosive fight that ultimately ended your relationship.
youâd been working in storm parâs offices, planning each chase, for nearly a month before you were promoted in early april to join scott and javi in the field. once again, tyler was pissed when he found out. youâd already hurt him by even agreeing to work with the exploitative company, but now you were putting yourself in danger on top of that, and he wouldnât be around to protect you. it killed him to think about anything happening to you, but he was so angry and resentful towards you about the whole situation. he let his pride and his hurt block out how his heart truly felt about you.
ę° and you met someone, your dad says heâs okay ęą
âand you met someone, i hear.â you had. well, kind of. about a month after starting at storm par, you were still torn up over tyler. just as you were now, though youâd never admit that to him. heâd really hurt you all those months ago. anyway, scott was there to help you forget about the tornado wrangler. you both knew he was just a rebound, but scott quite enjoyed the late nights he spent with you in dingy motel rooms, and, more than anything, he really loved pissing tyler off. he knew that being with you got under tylerâs skin in a way that nothing else did, and you relished in the attention he showed you. though, it would never compare to that of the arkansas cowboy youâd grown to love so much.
âyeah, i guess so,â you meekly nodded. being so close to him again was making your chest burn and your eyes sting, and this conversation was terribly awkward. you wished the sticky floor of the bar would just open up and swallow you whole.
ę° well, iâve never been better, things are going my way ęą
you were beginning to wonder what his motives were for coming over here. that was, until he began to speak again. âwell, i just wanted to tell ya that the fans really miss you on the streams. although, did you hear we hit a million subscribers?â boone had excitedly told you about it the day it happened. you were thrilled for them, but you couldnât ignore the pang in your chest that stemmed from the reminder that you wouldnât be there to celebrate with them all. âyeah, ty. looks like things are really going your way,â you smiled. you were happy for him. you had to be.
ę° i sleep like a baby; i never show up late for work ęą
ę° i donât drink whiskey; i donât know how it feels to hurt ęą
âmhm,â he hummed. âi barely know how it feels to hurt anymore. i sleep like a baby, and weâve caught every storm weâve been in the area for for weeks now.â
you will the tears from your eyes as you force a smile. âthatâs really great, tyler. iâm glad to hear youâre doing so well.â
ę° oh, and i ainât been lonely since you said goodbye; i wish i could say i miss you, but you know i never lie ęą
ę° yeah, i met somebody too, sheâs a model out in l.a. ęą
ę° and sheâs begging me to move, she says malibu is really great ęą
ę° ainât decided if iâm going or not, but at the end of the dayâŚęą
âthanks. i met someone too, you know. her nameâs emily. she lives in the dallas area, does modeling for a couple magazines out there. she says itâs really great.â
your throat squeezes even tighter; you know heâs trying to get a ride out of you on purpose now. you know, deep down, that youâve hurt him by going out with scott. you steel yourself before responding. âoh, yeah? you gonna sell your place in little rock?â he half scoffs, expecting a different reaction. âainât decided yet. but at the end of the day, iâm good wherever i am.â
you give him a half-hearted grin, already starting to slip off your stool. âiâm happy for you, ty.â you say before subtly bolting out the entrance of the poorly lit room.
the second you hear the heavy door slam behind you, you begin gasping for air. hearing how well tyler was doing without you was quickly sending you into a tizzy. you try to stall your tears and calm your breathing, but the air around you is too thick, your skin too warm, and the hurt too intense. your chest feels as if itâs closing in on itself and youâre not sure what to do, and then you see them. the other wranglers are suddenly surrounding you. ây/n? are you alright? what happened?â lily asked. you shake out your hands, trying to control your breathing. âitâs-â deep, shaky breath. âitâs nothing. iâm fine. iâm fine.â they all continue to eye you, not quite knowing what to say, until boone speaks up. âoh, shit,â he whispered, mostly to himself, though you all heard it. âwhat?â dani asked. boone looks at her with wide eyes, âtylerâs been in there for a while already.â
you finally get your breathing semi- under control and nod. âiâm okay, i just- tyler was telling me how well he and you all are doing and it just.. kinda threw me. but iâm alright.â they all share a puzzled look before looking back at you with furrowed brows. âhe told you he was doing well?â you nod once more. âyeah, said he sleeps like a baby, and that you guys havenât missed a good storm in weeks,â you explain. they all collectively scoff before boone shakes his head. âthatâs such bullshit. i had to share a motel room with him a few weeks back, he didnât stop tossing and turning âtil nearly four in the morning.â your brows raise. âyeah, and we literally missed what wouldâve been a stunner just last week cause he couldnât get his shit together in time,â lily adds. you shake your head in disbelief. âhe told me he met someone. emily, i think?â
âoh, you mean that girl he went on three dates with before he decided she wasnât what he wanted and sent her back to texas?â
now it was your turn to scoff. âwhat? why would he lie?â you had a little bit of an idea, but you didnât want to get your own hopes up for no reason.
ây/n. you and i both know that he told that girl it wouldnât work out because heâs not over you,â dani said. your eyes blur again. god, you really wish theyâd stop doing that. âi- i donât know why heâd tell me he found someone else if he hadnât,â your voice breaks as dexter quietly slips away from the group and into the crowded bar. âwho knows why tyler does anything? all i know is that he loves you more than-â sheâs interrupted by the heavy door behind you busting open. ây/n,â tyler breaths. youâre frozen, eyes glued to him. âiâm sorry. i didnât mean to upset you. iâm not with emily, and i havenât slept properly in months. i miss you like crazy,â he steps toward you hesitantly. âi promised you iâd never lie to you and i broke it. all i ever do is hurt.â
the dam finally breaks and your tears begin to soak your reddened cheeks. ânothing is going the way i want it to now that youâre not with us, with me. i just wanted you to miss me the way i miss you but i went about it all wrong. iâm so sorry.â
you laugh humorlessly, âtyler, scott and i were never serious. he and i both knew that i never got over you. i miss you more than anything. i miss all of you guys,â you go to gesture behind you, suddenly realizing that the rest of the wranglers had disappeared, leaving the two of you to work this out. you turn back around with a small, watery smile on your lips. tyler has a twinkle in his eye as he takes another step toward you, hesitantly reaching for your hands. âhoney, whatâll it take for you to take me back? iâm miserable without you.â his eyes are teary now, too.
your smile grows. âiâll take you back, ty, as long as you promise to never lie to me again.â
he grins, his smile brighter than you think youâve ever seen it as little tears drip from his eyes. ânever again, baby. i promise, for real, this time.â
your laugh is genuine as you lean in to press your lips against his for the first time in far too long. as you pull away, your brows furrow once more. âhowâd you know i was out here, anyway?â
tyler lightly squeezes your hips before answering, âdexter came into the bar just a few minutes before i came out here. he found me and told me that i better get my ass outside and try and get my girl back before it was too late. told me i had upset you pretty bad. i ran through the crowd as fast as i could to get to you; i had to tell you that i hadnât meant to hurt you.â
you place your hands on top of his, running your thumbs over the tops of his knuckles. âitâs okay. i didnât mean to hurt you either. i was just⌠having a hard time functioning without you and scott was there to take the edge off. i shouldâve known it was a bad idea.â
he places a hand on your cheek, squeezing your hand with the other, still on your hip. he brings your lips to his again, putting all of the unspoken words and wasted time into the sweet kiss. âeverythingâs okay, now. but you gotta tell scott that itâs over between you.â
you giggle. âiâll text him the minute we get back inside.â he lightly pinches your hip as he grins. âgood. now come on, sweet thing. iâve got a lot of time to make up for.â he slides his arm around your waist as the two of you begin to make your way back into the rowdy bar.
âhey, ty?â
âyeah, baby?â
âcan i come back to the wranglers? storm par is so boring in comparison.â
he laughs loudly before proudly answering, âabsolutely, honey. itâs great to have you back,â he responds before leaning in for one last sweet kiss.
ę° wish i could say i hadnât missed you, but you know i never lie. ęą

the costuming in twistersâ act 2 makes me think that kate & tyler r gonna be the kind of couple who go whole streaks of accidentally color-coordinating. just entire weeks where if kate walks out in an olive tank you can bet tylerâs gonna be wearing green. no one they know has the decency to clue them in on it either
#twisters#twisters 2024#kate carter#tyler owens#kate x tyler#kyler#glen powell#daisy edgar jones#(it should be noted that itâs Absolutely intentional on tylerâs part when he can help it)#(they donât always change together but when they do you bet your ass tylerâs gonna match with his work wife)#(they own like 6 shirts apiece though so that makes things a little easier)#(theyâre gonna be the disgustingly cute old couple wearing matching denim shirts & cowboy boots at the jcpenney photoshoot)#they speak

Losing Donna was the last straw for ten. The man who loved so much, so often, who lost three beautiful, important women to him. He lost Rose, and just barely recovered, but partially at the expense of Marthaâs wellbeing.
And then he finds Donna again, and heâs happy. He adores Donna, and like River said, âShe held you back when you needed holding back, and she egged you on when you neededâŚegging.â Donna was his best friend, and proof that he could recover, and love, and love someone deeply.
And then he lost her.
And that was the last straw for him. He seems okay sometimes, but then Christina calls him âSpacemanâ. And then he canât do what Donna told him to, he canât even save someone on Mars. Heâs running faster and harder than ever before, and heâs trying to control something because heâs lost everyone. He lost Donna, the world wonât let him have anything, he went from briefly having a group of friends, a family, to fly a Tardis with, and within an hour, he was completely and utterly alone again, and that broke him beyond repair. That broke Ten beyond repair.
The Doctor losing Donna was it for him. It was the last thing he could take, until he regenerated. Ten suffered so much and loved so much, and he loved Donna with every last breath he had. And Wilf, even though heâs trying to help, showing the him Donna hurt him so badly. Like dangling all he wants and all he had so recently right in front of him. âYou need her, wouldnât she make you laugh again, good old Donna?â
And Wilf was right. Ten needed Donna.
