2022 Canadian Nationals entry #18
Junior short dance
Estepa/Hickey
Thoughts: she is just gorgeous. It’s a shame she retired so quickly. I hope she’s happy, whatever she’s doing now.
Gover/Patriquin
Thoughts: Sophia is a vision. But these two need more speed.
Embro/Millar
Thoughts: I see them differently. I think the first time, I thought Sydney had too much cleavage. But now I like these two.
Gadoury/Desmarais
Thoughts: Eliane is stunning but Felix has too much facial hair.
Makita/Gunara
Thoughts: it was pretty much love at first sight with these two. Tyler is very pretty.

We’ve just published our new interview with Canadian junior ice dance team - Miku Makita and Tyler Gunara!
After their second place finish at Skate Canada Challenge, we talked to them about the Youth Olympics, past programs, and training during uncertain times.

Youth Olympics - Rythm Dance
Did I - someone who’s not even that into Ice Dance - just watch the entire Rythm Dance just for Utana and Shingo? Hell yes. Was it worth it? Hell yes. I mean omg, they’re amazing and I love them. Shame about the fall, they started off so well! I really hope they can kill it in the free and take as much from away from this experience as possible. I also hope that JSF will give them all the opportunities they deserve in the future and won’t brush them aside for Kana and D*i. Japan could really use a good Ice Dance team, and these two have so much potential!
I also really adored Miku Makita and Tyler Gunara. What a fun and adorable program! So much energy in there and the way she smiles and is obviously having so much fun the whole time is just infectuous.
What I don’t understand here at all is the scoring. To be fair, I’ll admit that I’m not an expert on Ice Dance whatsoever and I can’t say I fully understand how the scoring works - but both of the Canadian teams as well as the American team seemed really disappointed about their scores and the commentator seemed baffled as well and wondered why they didn’t get more. For example - I’ll admit that the program of D’Alessandro/Waddel isn’t really to my taste, but they skated it very well, were super thrilled afterwards and then just seemed shocked and angry when the score was announced. And the public seemed shocked at all of the scores in the last group as well. Especially weird since the judges seemed rather generous in the beginning of the event. Idk, maybe there’s stuff here that I don’t understand, but something seems fishy.
And now we have 1-2 for Russia in Pairs, Men AND Ice Dance... Should I even bother watching Ladies, or...?

was watching the 2006 olympic ice dance event, and Megan Wing and Aaron Lowe were there competing with Marina and Igor at the boards for them -- they're the most prominent west coast of Canada coaches for ice dance, only Calalta in Calgary seemed to have more teams (though they had so many teams split this off season, this might not be true any more) west of Ontario
Tumblr media
didn't know Wing and Lowe are the same age as Marie France and Patrice and that their careers overlapped almost exactly. Wing and Lowe started out ranked higher - from 1995-1999, they placed above MFP at Nats, but then MFP hit another level, won Nationals in 2000 and never looked back. Wing and Lowe were as high as 10th at Worlds and 11th at the Olympics before retiring in 2006. Their top team now is Miku Makita and Tyler Gunara, and they teach out of that Champs International rink that Scott and Tracy Wilson were at recently
of the 🇨🇦 ice dance schools, you have MFP and Carol and Jon Lane representing British skating technique and Wing/Lowe having had Russian coaches, and Scott having both

Nadiia Bashynska & Peter Beaumont break the fourth-place curse that afflicted Canada’s junior dance teams in the first three Junior Grand Prix events of the season, winning the bronze medal at 2019 JGP Chelyabinsk.
Now that that’s done with, here’s to everybody else doing better in their second events.
