Top 100 Songs of 2018
Happy New Year!
Another year and yes, another 100 songs. However, it does not appear to be a distinguishable year by any means. Or does it mean, that I’m just older and less impressionable. There are cool new features, including Chloe X Halle, Amber Mark, and Ravyn Lenae.
However, the year appears to be a hold over from last year. More Khalid, H.E.R., Daniel Caesar, Gallant, and Tom Misch.
Childish Gambino is a star. Janelle Monae seems to cross over a little more/
Pop appears to have languished for me, there is some Demi, some Mark Foster, and Troye Sivan.
I get more play from NAO and Alina Baraz
But 2018 just didn’t seem to land big with me, musically.
Or maybe, I’m just down with all the throwback, Maxwell, Tamia, and Toni.
Here is to 2019. I guess.

REVIEWING THE CHARTS: 11th March 2018
Our highest debut this week is by XXXTENTACION. Pray for me.
Top 10
Surprise, surprise! Drake’s still at the top with “God’s Plan” and it doesn’t seem like he’s falling off anytime soon.
“These Days” by Rudimental featuring Jess Glynne, Dan Caplen and Macklemore is definitely trying to put up a fight at number-two but I still don’t think this will last long enough to overthrow Drake; hell, it’s even started to sour on me a little bit.
“IDGAF” by Dua Lipa is steady at number-three and I’m inclined to agree with Dua.
“Feel it Still” by Portugal. The Man returns to our top five by taking a two-step climb to number-four.
“Friends” by Marshmello and Anne-Marie is sticking to number-five.
“Psycho” by Post Malone featuring Ty Dolla $ign drops off by two after the debut, standing at number-six.
“This is Me” by Keala Settle and The Greatest Showman Ensemble moves up one space to number-seven.
While “All the Stars” by Kendrick Lamar and SZA is down to number-eight.
“Say Something” by Justin Timberlake featuring Chris Stapleton, after reaching 100 million YouTube views, has gone up one spot to nine.
And finally, joining Kendrick and SZA in the one-spot-down club, are Liam Payne and Rita Ora with “For You (Fifty Shades Freed)”.
Climbers
While there aren’t many, there are a few that surprised me, like “Blinded by Your Grace, Pt. 2” by Stormzy and MNEK going up six positions to #29 off the return, and “The Middle” by Zedd and Grey featuring Maren Morris going up 13 spaces to #18. There are very little other major gains to talk about, but notably off the debuts, we had 11-spot gains for both “Lullaby” by Sigala featuring Paloma Faith and “Paradise” by George Ezra, to #21 and #19 respectively.
Something else that’s worthy of note is how the remix of “Look Alive” by BlocBoy JB featuring Drake that adds verses from Skepta and Suspect is now being counted as the version used for the charts, which means it’ll probably take a few gains in the upcoming weeks.
Fallers
Yep, next to nothing is worth talking about in terms of fallers. I suppose the five-spot fall for “River” by Eminem featuring Ed Sheeran and the nine-space fall for Dua Lipa’s “New Rules” to #32 and #35 might mean they’re near the end of their run, but that’s pretty much it.
Dropouts
Charts are like colleges. There’s always a few dropouts. Today, these dropouts are admittedly quite sad. We’ll bid farewell to Jason Derulo and French Montana’s “Tip Toe” from #38, Not3s’ “My Lover” from #18(!), “Supermarket Flowers” by Ed Sheeran from #26 off the return, “Bad” by Steel Banglez from #40 and “Want You Back” by 5 Seconds of Summer from #22. However, we’re also greeted with a special feature because this week, we have a returning entry to fill up one of those open spaces.
Returning Entries
I only talk about these if I haven’t talked about it before, so here goes nothing.
#33 – “Meant to Be” – Bebe Rexha featuring Florida Georgia Line
Out of all songs, this was Bebe Rexha’s US break-out single? A track with fake-as-all-hell finger-snaps and guest vocals from twang-meisters (that’s my new nickname for bro-country artists) Florida Georgia Line? To be fair, Bebe and Florida Georgia Line aren’t really that bad in their vocal performances here, and neither are the rattling hi-hats and snares. Nothing feels very full though, in fact, the gang vocals used to fill up space in an empty mix do more to hinder than help, feeling pretty unnecessary and somewhat forced into the song, as if this was supposed to be a trap/country crossover, even though the result is nothing more than some bland, vaguely-tropical pop ballad that I’ll forget in a week, but the public probably won’t. Next!
NEW ARRIVALS
#38 – “Big Lie” – Post Malone
So, this song is the latest single off of the album Stoney—Oh, is that not the right song?
#38 – “Love Lies” – Khalid and Normani
This is one of the few times that I’ve heard the song before, simply out of curiosity, and to be honest, I found Khalid’s vocals pretty aggravating. He sounds like he took a step out of Future’s book in his verse, over the pretty boring trap/R&B production with some kind of tropical pop synths and bass boosted so much that Lil Pump would appreciate a production credit. This doesn’t really bother me that much, but then we get to the hook, where they rip the melody off Post Malone of all people! Normani sounds great, and if I were to not mention her presence on the track, I would be kicking myself the next day, but overall, due to a disappointing and probably phoned-in vocal track from Khalid that sounds like it was swiftly added in post (Malone), uninteresting production and a hook that is lazier than the song it came from, this is pretty underwhelming. I’m excited for Normani’s solo work, though.
#37 – “What I Wanna” – MoStack
So, both Dave and MoStack, who collaborated on the pretty great single “No Words” last year, had songs that debuted this week. This one doesn’t really build up, it just comes at you full-force with an explosion of dancehall instrumentation, with punchy percussion and a catchy piano melody as well as sadly autotuned rapping from MoStack, which like most British hip-hop, sounds pretty cheap and ruins an otherwise pretty fun and bouncy instrumental. Seriously, the quality of the vocals is absolutely awful; it sounds like it was recorded via phone. The lyrics aren’t really anything to talk about, other than him remarking that he’ll put his “black in her”, and saying that she accepts him farting around her, both in the third verse. This is lazy to another level, with a synth melody in the outro as well as a sweet female vocal loop not really helping it. This beat was wasted.
#30 – “Hangman” – Dave
Dave, the singer on “No Words”, is rapping more on this pretty downbeat track with a typical trap piano melody and percussion, as well as finger-snaps, but Dave seems more introspective on this track, spitting bars about self-deprecation and trying to keep himself on top of the world and optimistic while keeping his street cred. It’s actually pretty interesting, with the female vocal samples helping assist Dave’s delivery, which is relatively monotone but at times very powerful, especially considering the subject matter. Some of his verses chalk up to just bragging, but the dude’s pretty damn clever at it, so I’m not complaining. This is pretty nice, mostly due to Dave himself. “Too many youths are dying and I’m sick of it”, is his final line before the instrumental outro that adds an extra flute melody that is pretty nice. Kudos to Dave, because this is pretty good.
#26 – “SAD!” – XXXTENTACION
I refuse to believe this debuted this high. Here’s the latest snippet – I mean, track – from his upcoming album, Question Mark, where once again he takes to some vaguely-alternative R&B percussion to mumble and flaunt his obviously still immature singing voice over some gunshot sounds(?). The lyrics are just him moaning, because of course, and I have yet to care about anything he’s saying. There’s something about this dude that’s just so unappealing. I’d take a whole album of “Look at Me!” than depressed X, because this is just bland, uninteresting schlock that doesn’t have any of the edge that his previous aggressive trap stuff did. That hook is catchy though, and I fear this will grow on me. I hope it doesn’t, but for now, who knows?
Conclusion
Please don’t let that XXXTENTACION track grow on me. If I ever claim I like it on Twitter or something, snap me out of it. I don’t have any predictions, but Best of the Week goes to Dave for “Hangman” and maybe even “SAD!” by XXXTENTACION getting the Honourable Mention for just being the decent stuff in a pile of garbage. MoStack takes Worst of the Week for “What I Wanna” and “Love Lies” by Khalid and Normani is a Dishonourable Mention. See ya next week!

From the trenches – out performing at discos every weekend, I think the Top 20 shown does reflect the taste of our ‘younger’ and ‘young at heart’ customers.
Our more ‘experienced’ customers did not request Post Malone that often to be honest!
Many of the songs being requested on the party planners and wedding reception planners that are filled out by our clients, and guests requests on the night are in the top 20.
The songs from 21-40 were a bit more hit and miss with regards to popularity to be honest – I would of thought Promises, Barking and Shape Of You should of been up in the top 20.

Official Charts Reveals 40 Biggest Singles Of 2018
Between Spotify, Billboard, and other streaming services, there are a lot of platforms that offer objective looks into “top songs” of 2018. While subjective opinions are a dime a dozen, there’s just no arguing with facts like streaming numbers and sales.
Official Charts, one of the most trusted barometers of UK charts for more than 60 years, has just put out their own list of biggest singles of 2018. These results mirror a lot of the same tracks as found on most-streamed lists from Spotify and Apple Music, but there are some notable differences.
Drake’s “God’s Plan” and Ed Sheeran’s “Perfect” both appear in the top 10, as we’d expect. Aside from that, the rest of the tracks in the top 10 are pretty different. Calvin Harris and Dua Lipa take the top spot with “One Kiss,” while the less globally-popular George Ezra sits right under Drake with “Shotgun.”

Ariana Grande spends another week on top of Countdown Top 40 this week with No Tears Left To Cry
Tumblr media
This week shows how strong the hits on the top 5 as they manage to stay on the region. Last week’s leader Ariana Grande still holds strong at number 1 with her dance floor anthem No Tears Left To Cry. Making a splash into the runner-up position is one of the guests on the recent reputation stadium tour of Taylor Swift, Shawn Mendes. Together, they performed the latter’s 2017 chart topper There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back. Will In My Blood be Shawn’s next number 1 single? Let’s find out next week. Also making a strong impact this week is the single from the duo of Sabrina Carpenter & Jonas Blue, Alien. Since its debut, Alien keeps on moving up the chart.
