Steve who did sports bc he had so much excess energy!! and now he gets the zoomies all the time and needs NEEDS to get outside and run around when the weather is nice...... Steve who thinks he's unforgivably strange and unlovable without his perfectly crafted mask and Robin who says she likes him better without it!!!!.... Steve hyperfixations (feat Steve who reads and frequents the library my beloved, he's so casually curious it just makes sense with his characterization I think)...... Steve full body stimming with Eddie or Robin and feeling amazing!!!!!...... Steve who has set up his space Exactly The Way He Likes It.....

(sorry this reply took a little to get too, i've been on my freak shit but finally got few ideas down for u <3)

i think steve would take time learning what stimming and being overstimulated and understimulated means. i think after the upside-down especially, but a lot before that too, he got too used to detaching, kind of separating from his body in order to survive. so now, sometimes, he gets these itches and urges and weird feelings and he just doesn’t know what to do about it. [and i think sport definitely helped him in the past, but i dunno if he would make that connection right away.]

but, he watches robin flap her arms with her sweater sleeves covering her hands. and watches eddie get fucking breathless head banging to a song. he sees robin skip to his car at the end of a shift, looking up at the sky and letting out a 'AHH!' with so so much feeling, cheeks flushed and eyes bright that the day is done, getting in and fiddling with the radio like it’s no big deal. he watches eddie jiggle his leg and bite his rings and stand up and pace when he's talking about something he loves. and steve tries them.

he tries all of them.

he fists his hands and shakes them until something dislodges in his chest, till he can finally take a full breath. he sings loudly along to bruce springsteen and wham in his car in the mornings, sometimes not ever really singing, just making noise. he jumps around his room with robin when she plays blondie, he asks eddie to show him how to head bang, tries it and laughs and kisses him breathless when the song ends. he gives robin his keys and takes off running in a lap around the building after work, sometimes near sprinting, sometimes circling five, six times, going till he's panting and the faces of all the people he had to see that day are washed away, until he can't feel the plastic on his fingers, can't smell the bleach or the too much cologne some guy used. until he's reset, until he's him again, not theirs, not who anyone wants him to be. until he feels good again, lets himself feel good.

sometimes, now, he jiggles his leg the same way eddie does, at the same time, until robin says she has to move 'feel fuckin' seasick over here with you two goblins.' and eddie just laughs. and steve can curl up into his side, if he wants, can pick up eddies hand and bite his rings if he feels like it, eddie would let him, maybe call him cute, wouldn't judge him. neither of them would, if he did that, if he did more. they would never, and its so nice.

but yeah, robin would hate that fake plastic smile he puts on to mask sometimes. and she'd tell him, with so much love. 'stop it. show me you.' because she just wants to be with steve.

but she’s so wonderful, he just, she gets it. sometimes things that he didn’t even know were bothering him will build and he’ll snap and rant and moan to finally get it all out. lungs heaving as he empties everything out before her. but she’ll just look at it, and seem to place it all in a way that makes sense, a way that’s small and fits in his pocket. she’ll say ‘woah yeah, that seems like a lot / would be stressful / i’m not surprised you're overwhelmed’ and it’s just. it’s so simple. he’s seen, he’s listened too and validated. it still makes him pause, in stunned silence, and it’s like there’s a plaster placed on his heart with every instance that it happens. sometimes it seems to strike such a chord it's like it's hitting a deep wound that he buried inside, a scab finally healing and falling away. sometimes it makes him sob in her arms, overwhelmed and amazed and so so moved by this person he's met, this wonderful angelic creature that he gets to call his.

the next time he has his super masked, customer service face on when its just the two of them, she threatens to bite him. and steve smiles for real, laughs, feels another plaster sticking over the others.

and steve library frequenter yes yes!! i agree that he is curious and practical and i think a hands on kind of guy! so i think he goes to the library and gets books about cars. i think he likes learning about how to fix his, trying to understand what could go wrong, how it happens, what you do in different scenarios. i think that's something him and eddie and wayne bond over, helping to fix their cars. steve and eddie even work together to do up wayne's van a little, getting it a new bumper and a couple parts scavenged at the junkyard. it's fun for him to work out what's missing, what’s changed, how and why and then putting it into practice. taking something apart and putting it back together. makes him feel proud of himself, something he really doesn't feel often. makes his brain zone in and flow and focus for a couple hours and it just feels so nice, its a happy time for him.

also, speaking of special interests - ✨sport stats✨. steve can name the players of all the basketball teams currently playing professionally, likes watching the tactics shows that come on before and after the games. likes talking at eddie and explaining why its actually really cool that they swapped out that player to give this new guy a chance, he's big news, a young up and comer and has a really interesting play style, its gonna work well with how their current manger organises the court. and eddie just smiles at him, squeezing steves hand in his lap and trying to understand what he sees on screen, follow along (he struggles to take in all the information, it's just not his thing. but it makes him so happy when he watches steve watch.) and steves happy little keens when something interesting happens, mindlessly fiddling with eddie’s fingers and tapping his other hands fingers against his knee, 1, 2, 3, 2, 4, 2. relaxed and focused and sometimes he rocks when it gets really tense and eddies heart bursts.

because it wasn't always like that, it was a struggle and a near pleading for eddie to just get steve to tell him what he likes, talk to him, get to know him. to just let eddie in. because eddie wanted to know everything and steve just didn't know how to deal with that. why would eddie care? no one ever listens to him. he's embarrassing and annoying and gets to loud and eddie doesn't like sports so why would steve tell him anything? it took soft words and gentle encouragement and reassurance again and again that he's listening, he wants to listen, wants to know. 'always, always wanna listen to what you have to say stevie.' so when steve comes over to the trailer after work, talking about the latest switch they announced in the paper, how last nights points shifted the league around and now he doesn't even know who's going to win, isn't that cool? eddie fucking beams because this is his boy. his bright, beautiful, exited baby and he’s talking to eddie, he's letting eddie see him.

steve and his space though. thinking very much about that. he doesn’t have the strictest schedule, he’s learning that sometimes its okay to leave the sheets for another couple days, that the dust can settle for another week before he needs to wipe it away. but some things are just, they just have to be right. he needs to know where things are, needs the important stuff in the same place every day so he doesn't forget. needs his products in the bathroom out and in order so he can keep track of when something needs replacing, so he's not left without something he needs. wants this one specific pillow at night, and one for between his knees and a duvet on year round, needs it to feel warm and safe and right in his bed.

and his clothes, its not even about the sensory stuff for him, like yeah most of his tops are soft, his jeans pretty worn in. he has some really old sweatshirts that are special, that come out on the worst days. but it's also about how clothes look, how they make him feel. he want his jeans to fit right, sit right on his shoes. wants his shirts to make his shoulders look nice, make him feel comfortable and confident and like a normal fucking person who can exist in the world. its another part of the mask, maybe. but it works and its his and most of the time he thinks he looks good. and that's okay. he's learning and its healthy and its practical and it helps.

but he also adores wearing eddies t-shirts. when he's at home all day or to sleep at night. especially if eddies not there, when steve misses him, when he wants him. steve wears eddies t-shirts to bed. they're all ones eddies left after staying, they're old and soft and the tags have been cut out and they smell like eddie. like his eddie. like he's there. steve loves it, wraps himself up in it, helps him feel soothed and taken care of even if he's alone, maybe its a little sad, makes him feel embarrassed, too much. but he's learning not to care.

sometimes eddie talks to him and touches him in a certain special way that makes steve feel so so foggy and taken care of and amazing. so, if eddie's not there but he craves that foggy feeling, steve wears eddies t-shirts and he speaks to himself like eddie would and he makes himself dinner and looks after himself and tucks himself into bed and rubs the fabric of the collar against his nose. and tries not to feel embarrassed if he needs more, if he has to suck on his fingers/thumb for a while, clutching the fabric in his hand. tries to let himself whimper or even cry a little if he needs, at how nice it feels, how gooey and needy he can allow himself to get. accept it as part of himself, that eddie likes it, still likes him, still loves him. just something he needs sometimes. and steve falls asleep, wearing eddies t-shirt.

Given that they are from the equivalent of medieval times, the Headmage doesn’t quite trust them to take care of things… more so Deuce and Ace have become the “caretakers” than Yuu themselves. 

especially since Yuu’s traveler instinct keeps making them run into danger like a MANIAC!!!

im sorry i didnt get to this earlier, i was waiting to be more awake but im literally getting worse LOL. but it made me so happy ;_; thank you thank you thank you, for being far too kind abt my art 😭 im so fuckingglad i finally got a tablet during my crazy ass wayhaven renaissance because there could not be a sweeter group of people to share stuff with 🫂♥️

for the oc ask… well i just gotta do dev/mason theyre in my minds microwave 24/7 rn (hope the ceiling fan falls on them btw)

some of this is a bit more association than true description of character bc i could go on forever listing stuff for both of them.. but for dev w mason it would be two big things at their current standstill:

- marlboro reds; her favourite — she is in the middle of quitting smoking in book 1 so him constantly lighting up with her cigs of choice, as well as just being rude and grating on her already thin nerves, drove her barking mad insane. by book 2 she is floundering hard and asks for one after he shows up at the station. when he says no and that she’s supposed to be quitting she gets a bit pissed and makes him put out smokes anytime thereafter out of pettiness. also reds…… strong, numbingly intense, addictive, etc. sums up the early stages of their arrangement :D

- definitely the wolf cub from the carnival game! deva is hugely sentimental (to a concerning degree — she is a hoarder yay disaster apartment option) though would never admit to it. she still keeps raggedy decades old stuffed animals from when rook was around that she just cannot say goodbye to 🤦‍♀️ and she refuses to let herself get attached to mason on any meaningful emotional level so those budding feelings in book 3 kind of manifest on the wolf cub without her realizing it (i was so glad there’s a little part abt the detective saving their carnival prize after the apartment gets flooded because Very Deva, that thang is her whole support network) (plus when mason inevitably bails during the night she has smth to cuddle because objects dont leave no sir . Rebecca get this girl a therapist)

- and one smaller thing im still playing w is red jasper crystal 🙇🏻‍♀️

maybe she sees them in the crystal store. I colour pick from these when i draw him LOL

for mason wrt deva — not an object but just straight up chaos tbh. at where they are in book 3 i imagine every time he sees the detective his brain is going question mark question mark. and hes definitely not sentimental in the way Dev is that certain objects would have any sort of emotional stir in reminding him of her. mason definitely goes more on how she makes him feel; really fucking good, really fucking confused, really fucking messy (like her apartment which he HAAAAATES), and on a few occasions now… weirdly serene. cant make sense of it; doesnt even understand why hes bothering TRYING to make sense of it but here he is and it’s happening and it has never happened before and THAT is probably the best way he could encapsulate her at this point in their relationship… other than, yknow, encapsulating in other ways 🫢

hello jay! thank you so much for the well-wishes 🥺 i'm back home now and so far feeling mostly okay <3

this is a really great question! i had to go back and reread a little to refresh my own memory. in short i think raydrin's thoughts at this point in the story are a little all over the place, but he is trying desperately hard NOT to think about (a) mathyas and (b) skooma, and supporting jórunn is his way of distracting himself from those two things.

he is repressing a lot, definitely. so much has happened and a lot of it is surreal, so instead of trying to come to terms with it, he is just. saving it for later i suppose? like with mathyas, i don't think he has yet come to fully grasp that mathyas is gone. it's the type of thing that would hit him at odd times only to escape him moments later. skooma withdrawal i think would have him feeling jittery, ill at ease, paranoid etc. then of course there is his shame and embarrassment at having been "found out" by both cassathra and mathyas.

so all of that is going on at the subconscious level, or at least raydrin is trying to keep it there. consciously, i think he is focusing on practicalities; navigation, guiding jórunn, tending to their needs on the road. if this chapter had been written from his perspective, i maybe would have kept it deliberately light on introspection, to kind of show that he is not allowing himself to dwell on anything.

then, of course, there is jórunn herself. raydrin has always liked her i think, but he is only now properly interacting with her for the first time. i think he pities her, in part (wrongly) because of her disability, but mostly because of the burden she has been saddled with. he is questioning his own abilities, wondering whether she might have been better off paired with someone else. and i think part of him is (guiltily) grateful that it's her who's the dragonborn and not him; in pitying her for her fate, he can make himself feel better about his own problems.

Relationship with Trey and Cater:

Mika doesn't have a very close relationship with either of them, but they're still on friendly terms. They met at the beginning of the school year with the whole overblot ordeal, and they see each other on unbirthday parties whenever she's invited. Out or the two, she talks a bit more with Cater because he's more outgoing; they might take some selfies here and there but their relationship is mostly superficial. Trey doesn't talk as much but he's there to remind her now and then to take care of herself and not get into too much trouble (a fruitless effort, really).

Relationship with Kalim:

Kalim is one of Mika's closest friends outside from the braincell duo (or maybe the closest?). They met each other during summer break when she had to stay over at Scarabia, and their energies matched perfectly. They both have the same type of happy-go-lucky personality; they're careless and chaotic, much to Jamil's chagrin, who has to clean up after two "Kalims" now. Even if they don't share any classes or clubs, they hang out quite often. It's not a rare sight for both of them to be flying on the Al-Asim heir's magic carpet around campus. They're also pretty big on casual skinship. You could say they're something like platonic soulmates.

Relationship with Epel:

Anne knows Epel because he is one of her new dormmates. She doesn't know everyone at Pomefiore, but this particular boy is stands out because he became Vil's favorite and he also participated in the VDC. She often sees him complaining and arguing with the leader and she feels a bit empathetic since she also had a phase of feeling like she didn't fit in the dorm. However, seeing that he's quite rambunctious, she would rather keep her distance. As for Epel, he has possibly seen Anne around the dorm, but doesn't know or care too much about her.

Relationship with Ace and Deuce:

Ah, the infamous duo. Of course she has heard of them. Since becoming closer to Riddle she has also seen them during tea parties. Whenever she sees them approaching, she tenses up because she feels like something will break, spill or go wrong in one way or another. And also Riddle's patience becomes thinner by each passing second and she swears she can see steam coming out of his ears. Therefore, they're a pair she'd rather avoid.

As for these Heartslabyul first years, they see her sometimes during these same parties but they don't know much about her besides her being "Riddle's friend from Pomefiore". Their first impression is that she's a very nervous and quiet person (little do they know that they're the ones responsible for her nervousness). However, at some point they might have done or said something that made her explode in a way that left even Riddle in awe. Since then, they start to be more careful around her.

Relationship with Ruggie:

So, here's the thing. I have an OC that I haven't formally introduced yet, but he's Ryder's acquaintance and he's in NRC and in Savanaclaw. Also consider that Ryder's UM is shapeshifting, so yes, he does visit NRC sometimes and Savanaclaw specifically as well.

That's how in one of those visits he meets Ruggie, and oh boy do they hit it off. They have many things in common and they become friends pretty quickly. Hating rich people? Check. Loving mischief? Check. They're partners in crime.

Ryder also loves "helping" Ruggie economically, which kinda bothers the hyena since it low-key feels like he's being looked down upon but hey, free stuff is free stuff (don't ask where Ryder got all of it). So... they aren't the type of friends that have a very deep bond and have existencial conversations together, but they're the type of friends that you call up to have a fun time and then don't text for a whole month.

Relationship with Rook:

Ryder's relationship with Rook is a bit complicated, especially to outsiders. Their bond is something only them understand. They're rivals, but friendly. They're those type of enemies who would die if the other died, because "who will be my enemy now?". They're too similar, but opposites. They're like the two sides of the same coin. They hate each other's guts but they also have respect for the other.

They met during the VDC, when NRC opened its doors to students from other schools. Obviously Ryder went there, and since they're both very observant people, they noticed each other, and they also noticed that the other had noticed them. After all of the mess was repaired, they introduced themselves with a handshake and somehow they knew what their relationship would become. Ryder always carries his bow and quiver, which Rook obviously saw, and Rook's feathered hat and eagle eyes informed Ryder that he was facing another hunter as well.

Rook is very interested in Ryder's beastman characteristics, and, despite not loving the attention, Ryder understands, really, since he's a very curious person as well. They're also both the type to put up a façade and not show their true feelings. However, they're opposites in the sense of what they pursue and their morality sense. Rook is a free spirit, but he's devoted to Vil in his pursue of beauty. Ryder on the other hand, doesn't like to follow any authority, and dislikes "vain" things.

Relationship with Lilia:

They haven't met each other, but let's talk about if they hypothetically met. Since Ryder is such a fake, they would be friendly with each other, but Lilia is old and has seen all types of people, so he knows (that it's all fake). And Ryder can't explain how, but he knows that Lilia knows. This leaves him with a very uncomfortable feeling, because he doesn't like being the one at a disadvantage of information. With Rook, he's more or less on an equal stage, but Lilia knows too much about him and he knows nothing about Lilia. He can sense that there is more to him than meets the eye, but he can't pinpoint exactly what. So, they wouldn't comment anything about it, but they would have a false amicability. okay.... for this season.... i have a lot of thoughts. my poor co worker who i would rant to every wednesday of my disappointments of the latest episode. shout out to you clara i know you give 0 fuqs about star wars but ty for letting me rant😌

as much as I like bo katan, the reinstatement of mandalore, the exploration of the clans... i really missed my two boys - that's what im here for their little shenanigans.

I think Din became a side character in his story - but to be fair i don't think he ever wanted to be the main character.

There were moments in this season that i really adored - grogu in the ig-12 suit made me so much happier than i expected. I think the finale was the best episode of the season, giving us in my opinion the best fight scene of the series (din + red lighting + being a bad ass OOOOF yes more of that). And the ending!!! my man can finally REST!!! He as a whole ass house - a bed, a place where grogu can play in the sun!!!! That ending was very perfect. All that said.... moments don't make the season good.

Not sure where they're heading in the future. All this "mandoverse" talk i don't really want it. I think the Mandalorian was great because it was star wars but you really didn't need to know all the other star wars lore until the introduction of luke (WHICH WAS AMAZING im not complaining) you really could just pop in and watch this space cowboy on his side quests and have a great time.

SO i guess i was let down this season :( I still really enjoy the show and will continue to watch any & all mando content. I don't want to be overly pessimistic of the season. Maybe my opinions will change over time or when I give the show another rewatch!

▪When Azul learned about how his specific soulmate magic woked, he prayed with all his might that you would not develop a crude sense of humour.

▪Luckily, you seemed to be merciful, and very rarely doodled on yourself.

▪When you first did it, Azul was taken by surprise. Cautiously, he drew a little response doodle.

▪You answered.

▪From that moment on, you two would have at least one conversation a day.

▪This carried on from when you were little right into high school.

Azul looked around his office, just in case, before rolling down his sleeve. He took a pen from his desk and neatly scribbled a smiley face. A hello.

He got a smiley face back and the conversation began.

Azul loved talking about school with you, especially because of how amazed you were when he illustrated cauldrons and options and magical pens.

He looked at his arm and saw you had drawn two eels with a question mark.

Azul knew you were asking how Jade and Floyd were.

He sent a thumbs up.

He blinked when you started doodling without stopping. It took a while but he managed to piece it together (you had both given up on writing sentences it never worked)

"Why... are... they... out...side... my... house..?" Azul's eyes widened. "What?!" He scribbled a bunch of question marks but you didn't respond.

He stood up to try find the twins when the door was kicked open.

In walked Jade, followed by Floyd, who had a student slung over his shoulder.

It was not one of Azul's contracts.

"What on Earth are you two DOI-" Azul was cut off by Floyd placing the student on his desk.

"Azul, your soulmate. Azul's soulmate, Azul." He grumbled. Azul gaped when he saw the familiar doodles on their arm.

"Wha- wha- the prefect-how-"

Jade chuckled. "We found out quite a while ago that this one was your soulmate. Poor thing was convinced you wouldn't want a... magicless person. How sad."

Floyd nodded. "Yeah, it was funny to watch how they behaved around you at first but then it got so boooriiiin'. So tadaaa. Your welcome!"

Azul looked like a fish with the way his mouth kept opening and closing. "Wha... What..." You smiled awkwardly. "Uh, hi..."

▪Jade didn't care much for soulmates. It just wasn't that interesting to him. Until he saw something off appear on his wrist.

▪You two were smart enough to exchange numbers, so you could text and send pictures of terraniums, but you both preferred doing it as you always did.

Jade sighed and smiled at his arm. You were exchanging doodles again, tying to see who could draw a cuter mushroom chibi.

Since it was the Night Raven College Open Day, Jade had set up a stall for his club and was waiting for someone to sign up.

Unsurprisingly, no one did.

Jade shook off the disappointment and looked down again. He noticed your drawing was a bit shakey. You were walking while doodling.

Again.

Jade sighed. "Oya, you're going to walk into something again." He murmured.

"You're right." Came a voice. "I walked into you."

Jade's eyes widened in surprise as you stood in front of him, smiling widely. "Hello Mister Leech Sir. I'm here to sign up for the Mountain Loving Club!"

Jade smiled so brightly it was almost blinding. "You... You're here..." You nodded. "Yeah! I'm so glad I can finally see you in person!"

You looked at the sign up sheets spread out in front of him. "Huh. No one else signed up?" Jade shook his head. "No. Unfortunately not. Either they don't like doing work or I'm too 'creepy'."

You clicked your tongue. "Well that's just stupid. You're not creepy at all!" You were dead wrong, but Jade let you believe what you wanted.

You took his hand. "Don't worry! It'll be fine! I'm sure we'll get more members eventually! For now it's just us!"

Jade smiled wider.

"That... sounds nice..."

Today Floyd had learned you were going to one of Sage Island's beautiful beaches.

Almost immediately he asked what you'd be wearing so he could spot you.

You almost had a heart attack a week later when your seashell collecting expedition was interrupted by a webbed hand grabbed you.

"WAH-" Your face drained of all colour. "LET GO! WHO ARE YOU?!" Floyd laughed and showed you his arm. "Silly Seashell. I'm Floyd! I'm your soulmate!"

You gaped in shock. "You're... You're a mermaid..?" "Yeah!"

You grabbed him and yanked him forwards so your faces were inches apart. "I've been dreaming of meeting a real mermaid all my life. Tell. Me. Everything."

Floyd suddenly felt slightly nervous, which was very odd for him. "Ahahaha. Everything as in..?"

"Even the nitty gritty. T e l l or no more doodles."

"Okay okay geez!"

Floyd had a feeling that he was going to be answerings some really odd questions.

But you were cute about it. And soon you were sitting in his lap in the water and watching the crashing waves while he diligently answered your questions.

You whispered a question and Floyd turned red, his ears drooping slightly.

"Ne ne, I don't think I'm gonna tell you that."

You pouted. "Aw man." Then you laughed. "Ah well! I'll just show you my seashell collection in the meantime!"

Floyd smiled. He was so so happy he found you.

"Ahaha. You're funny, Seashell."

i’m here to ask you about the scarlet letter art symbolism 👀👀 it’s sooo good omg amazing work

WAAAAAAAA thank you!!! im so glad you like it im super proud of it!! 🥰🥰 ty for asking bc im genuinely soo proud of the symbolism in this one!! i put a lot of effort into it :] i’ll leave my rant under the cut to refrain from clogging the dash, but thank u for giving me this opportunity to talk about this😭 if anyone is confused or just wants to see the piece, it’s linked under the cut as well!!

ok so i’ll be explain both my research process and the symbolism here!! i did a lot of work with thumbnails and different references, and to design the clothes i used a mix of renditions of the characters that already exist (including an image of hester from an 1888 copy of the book, which i own!!), historical fashion cites / archives, and other portraiture from or depicting the time period!! both hester and arthur are only vaguely described in terms of detail (with hester having a bit more physical description), so i did my best to keep them as accurate as possible (hester having slightly softer features than are typical of the time, and arthur looking. vaguely unwell and sickly) 🥰 i also had a reference board of styles, taking inspiration from different playing / tarot card designs and the art nouveau style (just bc i like it :] )

around the boarder (as pointed out by @jzmn8r in the tags!! ♥️) are thorny rose bushes, which are a symbol i took from the roses by the jail & grave yard! the figurehead of the winged skull (also pointed out in the tags by my beloved friend @cafffine 😌) is actually a common symbol that i found in my research on puritan headstones! im not sure where it originated from, but it is depicted in a lot of puritan graves, and since death and the graveyard are both important parts of the novel, i thought it would work well! the Ace of hearts in the corners matches the scarlet letter on hester’s chest, and i was rlly proud of how i incorporated the heart :]

moving on to my favorite bit: the pearls!! also pointed out by @/jsmn8r, the string of pearls represents how hester and arthur are connected through their daughter, pearl! on hester’s half, the pearls are drawn taught around the back of her neck, like a chain, but they don’t wrap around her throat. the way she is holding them shows her autonomy a little bit, how she is able to be in control of her life despite being a victim of circumstances. she’s chained, but she’s safe.

in contrast, arthur’s pearls are wrapped around his hand–the same hand he’s using to hold the knife. they’re tangled just like he is tangled in the lie he’s perpetuating, and the pearls, while loose, hang all the way around his neck like a noose. he is entirely in control of his situation, but it’s going to kill him, no matter what choice he makes.

the strings on hester can represent a lot of things, but i like especially how they show how she took the scarlet letter and made it her own, eventually using her great skill to sustain herself and her child. she is also caught up in the consequences of her actions and her lie (like arthur) but she has, despite her situation, managed to take care of herself.

the red threads also balance nicely with the red on arthur’s knife! i wanted to depict him cutting the A into his chest, but i left his clothes spotless, as a nod to how he was perceived by the townsfolk despite his guilt. he’s also holding (what was meant to be 😭) a bible in his other hand, but he’s noticeably looking away in fear, up towards the heavens.
