National Toast Day
Dig out your favorite bread and your go-to toast topper of choice – be it jam, chocolate spread or peanut butter – and top your toast!
Did you know that Toast Day was a thing? Well, it most certainly is – and it is one of the most exciting days there is!
Toast Day is extremely exciting as it acts as an opportunity to experiment with how you would usually have your toast. You can try out various different ways to enjoy this go-to snack and get creative with how it is presented on your plate.
History of Toast Day
Established in 2014 by Tiptree World Bread Awards with Brook Food, Toast Day celebrates the nation’s love of toast.
Tiptree World Bread Awards with Brook Food established Toast Day in 2014; the humble slice of toast is a national treasure and we thought it deserved a dedicated day of celebration. Toast Day has become an international phenomenon.
Sadly, Toast Day isn’t celebrated in the same way as other food-related days, such as Pancake Day, for instance, which gets a huge celebration. In the run-up to Pancake Day, the whole world becomes pancake obsessed; new products are sold, adverts are customized, new toppers are launched. However, Toast Day is celebrated in a more ‘relaxed’ manner, with most people choosing to celebrate at home with their favorite bread, some delicious toppings, and their toaster!
Some toast lovers choose to celebrate by hosting their own private toast making parties, where guests are invited to select their favorite bread – whether it’s white bread, brown bread, granary bread, or sourdough bread it doesn’t matter – and bring along their toasters, ready to spend the evening making lots and lots of toast.
Many toast lovers also choose to share their Toast Day creations via social media, tagging World Bread Award and using the hashtag #ToastDay. According to the World Bread Award, the weirder and more unique the toast toppings, the better!
Featuring on BBC Radio 2 Chris Evans Breakfast Show, Good Morning America, the Sun, the Metro and more. It’s been the number one Twitter trend in the UK; with social media engagement from a whole range of institutions including the NHS, Iron Maiden, MasterChef, Paddington Bear, Great British Bake Off, Aston Villa, Paul Young, You Gov, Coronation Street, British Heart Foundation, Hell’s Kitchen USA, BBC Three, Love Food Hate Waste, This Morning and many more.
Enjoy toast as your choice of breakfast (or lunch or dinner) on Toast Day. Maybe experiment with toppings and share your favorites with the world. Or even host a toast and tea party!
This year, Toast Day wants to bring the fun to food and is calling for the nation to turn their toast into art to celebrate our favorite crunchy fare.
Toast art is a sensation; it is huge in Japan and has been explored by a number of artists, such as Nathan Wyburn who has famously toastified many members of society’s upper crust including Jimmy Carr, Simon Cowell, and Boris Johnson.
How could you craft your #toastart? Painting with peanut butter, cutting out characters, maneuvering your baked beans? Whatever you choose, at least you’ll have a tasty treat to enjoy at the end of your arty endeavor!
How to celebrate Toast Day
There is no wrong way to enjoy a piece of toast  – everyone has their own go-to way to enjoy a slice of toast! While some people prefer lighter toasted toast, others prefer a darker colored piece of toast – some even like toast that has begun to blacken at the edges.
The degree of which toast is toasted is a very personal choice and causes a number of arguments within families. While some people prefer a lighter colored piece of toast, others like a darker and crunchier piece. It’s the same with a cup of tea; while some people prefer a less brewed cup, others are adamant that a dark-hued tea is a better tea.
How you like your toast is a very personal preference and one that is down to you – and your toaster of course. (Some toasters are far fiercer than others!)
There’s also the question of how to prepare toast and what toppings to choose…
There’s an argument regarding butter and whether butter should be applied only to ‘naked’ toast, or under toast toppings. Again, this is a very personal choice and one that not everyone will agree on.
While some people choose to top their toast with butter regardless of whether they’re going to consume it ‘naked’ or with a topping on, others believe that butter should only be used when eating toast on its own, or under certain, predetermined toppings, like Marmite, for example, or jam.
There’s also the question of how much topping is too much topping. Again, this is another question that a lot of people cannot agree on. While some toast lovers like to top their toast with a huge portion of jam, Marmite, peanut butter, cream cheese – or whatever their go-to topping is – others prefer to spread a thinner layer of topping onto their toast.
How you enjoy your toast really is a personal preference. There is no right or wrong way to enjoy a slice of toast, it’s down to personal choice – and your taste buds of course!
The most popular toppings can be broken down into two categories: sweet and savory toppings.
For savory toppings, popular choices include Marmite, peanut butter (however, this is some concern over whether peanut butter is sweet or savory – it apparently depends on what it is served with, such as Marmite or jam), cream cheese, or butter by itself.
For sweet toppings, go-to options include jam, chocolate spread – with Nutella being the product of choice for many toast lovers – Fluff and Biscoff spread.

Eight great sandwiches to make with your wild game and fish
Catch it, cook it, and put it on some bread. (Michael Kilcoyne/Unsplash/)
This story was originally featured on Field & Stream.
If there is one meal that’s more satisfying than a delicious, well-crafted sandwich—it’s a delicious, well-crafted sandwich stuffed with the hard-earned meat of wild game or fish that you’ve brought home from the woods or the water. Over the years, we’ve published many sandwich recipes, but the eight here—featuring venison, moose, upland game, and no shortage of fried fillets—are our favorites. So dig in, and enjoy.
Fried catfish po’boy
A fried catfish po’boy makes for the perfect summer lunch. (Photograph by Christina Holmes / Food and Prop Styling by Roscoe Betsill/)
If you ask me, there’s no recipe more representative of Cajun cooking that the humble po’boy. You’ll find fried catfish po’boys at almost any Louisiana deli, but it’s much more satisfying to make your own with the fresh summer cats you catch. Pair this sandwich with a side of sweet-potato fries and a cold beer. — Jean-Paul Bourgeois
The venison stand-wich
This sandwich almost looks too good to eat. Almost... (Plamen Petkov; Roscoe Betsill (food and prop styling)/)
The “shooter’s sandwich” became something of an Internet meme a few years ago, triggered by a British food writer’s deeming it the best sandwich in the world. Loading a hollowed-out loaf of bread with steak, mushrooms, shallots, and a fat dose of horseradish yields a kind of portable beef Wellington—the pinnacle of British cuisine reinvented as a trail snack. Hunters (i.e., real shooters) saw the potential for a game version—an ideal pack-along for sustenance on a long day afield. — Jonathan Miles
Fried pheasant sandwich
No fast-food sandwich can compare with this wild thing. (Colin Kearns/)
Back when the country lost its mind after Popeye’s launched its fried chicken sandwich, we took it upon ourselves to come up a with recipe for a sandwich that was tastier, healthier, and didn’t require you to get in line at six in the morning. (Also, unlike their sandwich, ours won’t give you heartburn.) The result was our Fried Rooster. — Colin Kearns
Venison sausage breakfast sandwich
Serve this at hunting camp, and you’ll be a kitchen hero. (Colin Kearns/)
Two scrambled eggs, American cheese, and a hefty patty of venison sausage all sandwiched between an English muffin—this is a meal for hunter who wakes up with a serious appetite (or hangover). The secret ingredient with this sandwich is a generous drizzle of honey alongside with some hot sauce. Trust us: The sweet-and-savory combo really hits the spot first thing in the morning. — C.K.

Melt Bar & Grilled, in the Cleveland suburbs of Lakewood and Cleveland Heights, has one specialty: grilled-cheese sandwiches. The menu presence of 26 variations on that humble childhood favorite—there’s even one stuffed with lasagna—is just one indicator of how far and wide owner Matt Fish is willing to take a grilled-cheese. Another: the Lake Erie Monster, in which a Guinness-battered walleye fillet is swamped in a gleeful mess of melted American cheese, jammed between thick slices of toast, and served with jalapeño-spiked tartar sauce. This is fish camp cuisine taken to its belt-loosening outer limits. — J.M.
Wild hog tonkatsu sandwich
Panko breadcrumbs result in a super-crispy, wildly-crunchy sandwich. (Photograph by Christina Holmes / Food and Prop Styling by Roscoe Betsill/)
Growing up, my mom would pack away smothered pork chop sandwiches from leftovers from the night before for my school lunch. As I got older and experimented more with cooking while in high school, I would make my own lunches—but with fried pork cutlets on white bread with yellow mustard and bread-and-butter pickles. When I moved to New York, I discovered tonkatsu sandwiches, which offered a different crunch from panko crumbs that my palate was not use to. I now regularly use the two influences (Cajun roots and Japanese technique) to create a tonkatsu sandwich that is completely unique. —J.P.B.
Turkey Fil-A sandwich
If you ask us, there’s no better way to cook turkey breast than in a deep-fryer.
In my opinion, the Southern fast-food chain’s chicken sandwiches, basic as they may be, owe their popularity to one thing: the pickle-juice marinade. The soak not only adds flavor, but plumps up the chicken—or, in this case, the turkey breast—leaving it moist and juicy, even after frying in hot oil. You can read the full recipe here, in my roundup of seven great wild-turkey recipes, but here’s a quick video to show you how it’s done. — David Draper
Deer testicle po’boy
Don’t knock whitetail balls till you try one. (Michael R. Shea/)
Yes, we know—another po’boy. But this one is too good to leave off of this list. Your buddies might flinch at this recipe—until they try it. Or just let them eat it first, then tell them what they’re eating after they’ve scarfed it down. Rocky Mountain Oysters have a cult following in the West, and for good reason. They’re delicious. So don’t leave these tasty bits in the gut pile. You can’t really mess up this simple recipe, and you’ll have plenty of joke material around deer camp, too. — Michael R. Shea

Prep Cook: Indonesian Gado Gado Salad, Alphabet Soup, Blackberry Cornmeal Muffins, and More
It’s Friday! Instead of thinking about all the work we still have to do, let’s take a look at the Prep Cook menu for this coming week. We’ve tested a week’s worth of meal recipes for you so that you spend your time and money on the most delicious ones. This week’s menu includes eggplant caponata, alphabet soup, and more.
Everyone has a different schedule (and different tastes), so the menu is organized by meal rather than day. I’ve ordered them to provide variety throughout the week, but you can skip meals that don’t sound good to you or switch them around based on how much time you have to cook when you get home. If you really want to get ahead, set aside two to four hours on the weekend to prep ingredients for the week (cut produce, mix up sauces that will last, mass cook items you can freeze, etc.).
Breakfast
Blackberry cornmeal muffins: I decided to make these because I had half a bag of frozen blackberries left over from when I made the most popular smoothie on Pinterest (there are no blackberries in that recipe and I had bought a bag of mixed berries, so I hand picked out the blackberries out because I love you all that much). When reheating the muffins, cut them in half first and then put them in a toaster oven (or microwave if you have to) so that they get warm all the way through.
Prep difficulty: Easy
Boost it: Top with fresh whipped cream and basil for a sweet treat or yogurt for a more savory one
Peanut butter overnight oats: Filling, easy to make, and quick to prep, this is one of my go-to breakfasts when I need to power through my morning without a rumbly tummy to distract me.
Prep difficulty: Easy
Boost it: Add in your favorite toppings, like shredded coconut, sliced almonds, or dried fruit
Whole wheat flax blueberry pancakes: A fun and simple breakfast that may be better saved for the weekend when you have time to whip up the batter and brown the pancakes.
Prep difficulty: Easy
Boost it: Add on a few toppings, like sliced fresh fruit, toasted nuts, or whipped cream
Lunch & Dinner
Sicilian Eggplant Caponata: There are a lot of ingredients in this dish, but you don’t have to prep most of them (you can buy your pine nuts pre-toasted). I loved the flavor combinations here; since Sicily is close to north Africa, this dish is somewhat Moroccan inspired. I served mine with couscous, but any grain will do.
Prep difficulty: Easy
Boost it: Cook this a day ahead of time and let it sit overnight so the flavors meld even more
Add meat: A mild meat, like chicken, is best so the spices from this dish shine
Pack it for lunch: Make sure you use an airtight container so the oil doesn’t leak out
Spinach and hominy enchiladas: This dish requires a lot of assembly, but is good if you have three to five people for dinner (or you want lots of leftovers). If you don’t have hominy, you can swap in cannellini beans. I bought my salsa verde to speed up the process.
Prep difficulty: Hard
Boost it: Use three adobo peppers in the cashew sauce to heat things up
Add meat: Put cooked ground beef into the filling
Pack it for lunch: Cut the enchiladas up before you pack them to make eating lunch easier
Indonesian gado gado salad: Great for hot weather, this refreshing salad takes a bit of prep work but you don’t cook most of the elements. I chilled my rice noodles after cooking to make this a cold dish for a warm evening.
Prep difficulty: Medium
Boost it: Press your tofu before you marinade it (and marinade it as long as possible) so it soaks up more flavor
Add meat: Slice grilled or pan fried chicken breast
Pack it for lunch: Keep the noodles separate so they don’t get soggy
Alphabet soup with garlicky roasted broccoli: I wanted to make this after impulse-buying letter pasta from the bulk section. A simple combo that turned out tasty!
Prep difficulty: Easy
Boost it: Serve garlic bread on the side. So much garlic in one meal!
Add meat: Add sliced sausage to the soup
Pack it for lunch: Use a spill-proof container so your soup doesn’t go everywhere
Gnocchi with slow cooker marinara and caesar salad: I don’t recommend making your own gnocchi unless you’re already good at it. Instead, buy it pre-made, I get mine at Trader Joe’s. This is a good meal when you don’t want to do much cooking.
Prep difficulty: Easy
Boost it: Put the extra garlic clove in the salad dressing, I dare ya
Add meat: After the sauce is done, add cooked ground beef
Pack it for lunch: You’ll need two airtight containers, one for salad and one for gnocchi with sauce
Portobello burgers with matchstick garlic fries: If you make the fries from scratch, this is better for a night where you have time to prep more. If you buy pre-cut fries, this meal is pretty quick to make.
Prep difficulty: Medium
Boost it: Pile your burger high with fresh toppings, like tomato or caramelized onions
Add meat: Swap the mushroom for ground beef or turkey
Pack it for lunch: Don’t assemble the burger until you’re ready to eat so the bun doesn’t get soggy
Orange tempeh with spicy stir-fried zucchini: The tempeh needs at least two hours to marinate so put it in the marinade before you head to work. I combined my tempeh and zucchini together and served it over rice, but you can serve the two separately if you prefer.
Prep difficulty: Easy
Boost it: Top your rice with furikake
Add meat: Switch the tempeh for chicken
Pack it for lunch: Keep the rice separate so it doesn’t get soggy with sauce
Have you tried one of these dishes before? Do you have your own version that’s super tasty? Share your tips and tricks in the discussion below.

6 Useful Tips for Spending Less on Meat at the Grocery Store
Good news for meat eaters, Paleo lovers, and Whole30ers: It's possible to keep up with your animal-protein habits without spending last week's paycheck at the grocery store. Whether you eat meat every day, because that's what makes you feel your best, or you like dabbling once or twice per week to get in your protein fix, buying meat can get pricey. But it doesn't have to... unless you're one of those filet-mignon-only kinda folks. The world of meat is so much more than that tender cut of beef, and we'll open your eyes to what's out there. Save a dollar (or 10) by following these tips.
1. Buy the whole animal.
OK, we aren't talking about bringing an entire pig home with you and having a roast (although, if you have the setup, we're jealous, and you should do it). We're mostly referring to chicken. It seems so easy to just buy the breasts, but when you're talking about price, it's best to buy the whole dang bird. This really goes for other types of animals too, because any labor incurred at the butcher counter gets added to the price tag. Boneless pork chops and rib eyes will be pricier than bone-in, and let's not even talk about prechopped stir-fry meat. Plus, buying the whole animal means you'll be able to use scraps for other nutritious creations (see No. 4).
2. Think outside of filet mignons.
One way to make meat eating more sustainable for the environment (meaning that you can utilize more of what the animal has to offer) is to diversify your meat selections and start integrating lesser-known cuts into your cooking routine. These less-common cuts are usually the more affordable ones, so it’s a double win. Ask your butcher to recommend some cheaper options from the case (since they’re used to going home with the stuff no one else wants... mainly because the customers don't know what it is). A few reccos you might hear for steak are:
Instead of rib eye: Denver, underblade, or chuck eye
Instead of beef tenderloin: Teres Major (known as faux filet)
Thinly sliced sirloin meat or short ribs make for a flavorful stir-fry
When it comes to affordable roasts, they can be sourced from many parts of the animal. Fattier, tougher cuts like these usually benefit from a low and slow braise, which makes them perfect for wintertime stews and roasts:
For pork: Try the collar, shoulder, or butt
For lamb: Go for a whole leg or sirloin roast
3. Embrace offal. (We swear it's not awful.)
Now that we’re acquainted with less popular cuts, it’s time to get comfortable with the “nasty bits” that really aren't so nasty after all. Offal refers to an animal’s organ meats. Common varieties are liver, brains, intestine (tripe), thymus gland or pancreas (sweetbreads), tongue, kidney, heart, bone marrow, and of course, the good old pig ear. Some of these items might be hard to, er, stomach given what they look like in the case. But if you can get past that, you’ll be doing your own organs a favor. Eating organs (preferably those from an animal raised with an organic or grass-fed diet) can provide a vast array of nutrients.
Interested? Organ meat takes a little more skill, time, and love to make palatable, so you may want to do some research when looking for the best recipe. Here's a gateway dish to get you started: Healthy Chicken Liver Pate.
4. Make bone broth.
Bone broth is (literally) so hot right now in the wellness world. The concept is similar to any homemade stock, but by simmering the animal bones for longer than usual, it's believed that the bones break down, releasing collagen (to help with joint health) and gelatin (believed to help with digestion, in addition to calcium and vitamins C, D, and E). While the jury's still out, it's worth a try.
Now that you’re cooking the whole animal, hold onto your discarded bones. Add them to a plastic bag and store in your freezer until you have enough to fill a large stockpot (about 2 pounds). Add in any other spices and herbs—garlic, onion, veggie scraps, peppercorns—and simmer on low for as long as you have the patience for, adding more water as the broth reduces.
5. DIY your deli meat.
Many people turn to packaged meat as a quick lunchbox filler or, for the jerky lovers, a high-protein, on-the-go snack. But smoked turkey might not be the only thing you're getting in that plastic sleeve. Processed meat products have been classified by the World Health Organization as carcinogens due to numerous chemicals and preservatives that have been added to some sausage, salami, and deli meats. While you can try to read labels and opt for nitrate-free bacon and organic, minimally processed sliced ham, there are a few easy ways to make alternatives at home, where you can control sodium and sugar content.
DIY Beef Jerky: Make your own fresh version by combining ground meat with your favorite spice combos or chicken sausage with olives and oregano. All you need is a baking rack and an oven set to the lowest possible temperature (170 degrees) to let the meat slowly dry. Here's a step-by-step method if you're brave enough to try!
6. Consider quality meats.
By now you’ve probably heard about the benefits of going organic for everything from your veggies to your counter cleaner to your hair gel. It's the same for meat, particularly because of hormones and antibiotics added to conventional versions. Added hormones is one reason 160 countries have banned US pork: The drug ractopamine gets added to feed to keep animals lean. In humans, it acts as a stress hormone, raising many red flags for health concerns, particularly in the heart disease department. [About the human health safety estimation of ractopamine intake together with the food]. Onishchenko GG, Popova AIu, Tutel'ian VA. Vestnik Rossiiskoi akademii meditsinskikh nauk, 2014, Jan.;(6):0869-6047.
Consider eliminating unnecessary antibiotics from your diet by switching your order at the butcher counter to organic. Meat quality and health implications of organic and conventional beef production. Kamihiro S, Stergiadis S, Leifert C. Meat science, 2015, Sep.;100():1873-4138. We know what you're thinking: Organic = more money and this is an article about saving?! We say try to go organic if you're cooking for one or two, but when it comes to a crowd, you do you and select whatever meat you please.

Compared to other national days, Turkey Lovers’ Day is relatively new. It was founded by the National Turkey Federation, an organization that has been promoting the use of turkey as part of America’s cuisine for the past eight decades, and Turkey Lovers’ Day was an important step in that direction.
There are many reasons why the National Turkey Federation decided to commemorate this day. Firstly, more turkey is consumed outside of Thanksgiving Day than during this festival. Secondly, more people are opening up to having turkey because of its nutritional value and rich taste. The NTF also feels that it has a responsibility towards turkey farmers and the industry in general since turkey is an important part of the American food industry.
Even though the commemoration of this day is not recognized by any law, the event has become quite popular simply because people love to have turkey and want to try out different recipes that they can prepare with turkey in the summer.

”My head is dizzy from my lust for turkey sandwich.” ~ Zachary Rich
Have you ever felt that Thanksgiving is just too far away, and it’s been far too long since you last tasted the delicious flesh of a properly prepared turkey? We know exactly how you feel. Thanksgiving may, in fact, be our favorite food holiday out of the year, but it’s all about the turkey in the end, and why should that delicious meat be relegated to only Thanksgiving? Turkey Lovers’ Day encourages you to break the mold and have turkey whenever you want it, there’s nothing civilized about Turkey once a year.History of Turkey Lovers’ DayTurkey has been a part of holiday cuisine since not long after American’s first landed at Plymouth Rock. Turkey is a quintessentially American bird, native to Forests from Mexico to SE Canada. However, the name for turkeys didn’t come from the Americas, but instead, the birds were thought to be a large sort of guineafowl that the Europeans were familiar with from Turkish merchants, and called them Turkey Fowl. The turkey quickly exploded into a sort of worldwide popularity of such significance that the turkey actually entered into English heraldry, first appearing on the coat of arms of William Strickland as “A Turkey-Cock in his pride proper”. There is also a distinctly European breed of Turkey now known as the Norfolk Turkey or the Bronze Turkey, making this once American animal a truly international bird. There’s nothing like the smell of a hot steaming turkey roasting in the oven, but that’s only one of the ways that it’s prepared. It has been baked, roasted, smoked, and recently it’s become popular to deep-fry the turkey, creating a unique form of preparation that’s wonderfully delicious, though it is a little perilous to prepare.
How To Celebrate Turkey Lovers’ Day
Go to the store. Find yourself a Turkey. Put in your oven. Cook till done. Eat. It’s as simple as that. But Turkeys are good for so much more than just a simple roast! After the turkey is done, slice up the breast to use as sandwich fixins’, strip the dark meat off the bones and use them in making a soup. Speaking of soup, take a bunch of vegetables (onions, carrots, garlic, celery) and drop it into a large stock pot with the skeleton and leftover skin and boil for 4 hours, salting and peppering to taste. Now you have a delicious turkey stock that can be used for making soup, replacing water in biscuits, just about anything you can imagine!
