For any potential tiktok refugees as it gets banned in the us:

• the algorithm does not work like the fyp, you need to follow blogs and reblog things to see things you like

• add a bio, header, and/or pfp!! people may block you if you don't have any of those thinking you're a bot

•tags are for categorization, tagging posts with 'trending' tags won't boost them, it'll just get people to report you for spam

•REBLOG. PLEASE. if you like someone's post then reblog! that's what actually shows it to people! like do basically nothing!!

• you can have multiple blogs. make as many as you want!! have one for shitposts and one for fun art and one for aesthetics and one for your weird niche porn, have fun!

•you can block tags! use that however you wish!

•avoid censoring sensitive terms in your posts and tags, spelling things L1k3 th15 makes it really hard for screen readers and folks who are trying to block certain terms. if someone has 'suicide' blocked and you spell it 'sewerslide' or 'sv1c1d3" they could still see that triggering content

•we're all weird here. block folks who don't match your freak. don't yuck other people's yums if it's harmless [and most things are], you're on tumblr. don't act like you're any better than anyone else in this damp hellhole of a site.

Upload something (anything) as a profile pic. A fave character, a pet, a sunset, ANYTHING

Reblog some stuff. You can always delete it later once you know what you want to blog

Putting something like "not a bot, just lurking" in your bio is optional

Because until you do these things,

You look like a spambot account and you're probably getting blocked.

New User Advice: Use Your Words

Welcome to new tumblr users! This post is going to explain why we don’t censor things on tumblr, why that’s important for safety, and why that will help your posts get MORE visibility, not less!

Now I know on some apps, particularly TikTok and Twitter, there’s the worry that saying certain words will cause the algorithm to ignore or suppress your post. Tumblr does not have an algorithm like that. There’s technically a “For You” page, but most people don’t use it and I don’t suggest it because that’s not really how tumblr works best.

Tumblr works best when you actively choose to FOLLOW people. This site is about connecting with individuals by CHOICE, not just passively consuming content that has been fed to you by math. Browsing tags and using the search function is your best bet to get started finding cool people. You follow them, and their posts will show up on your dashboard. Soon you’ll have collected a bunch of cool people and you’ll see great posts all day long!

If you WANT people to find your content, tag it with relevant tags. You WILL be reported as a spammer if you use tags that do not relate to your post. Do not tag your post about snakes with whatever tag is trending that day. Just tag it #snakes and #snakeblr. Just like TikTok has "booktok", combining the interest with the word "Tok", we do that on Tumblr too! We have #bookblr and #studyblr and all other kinds of tags to explore! You can also explore by using ship tags, like #spirk or #garashir or #stormpilot or any other ship name.

You can also choose what post content and which tags you want to block, and it works really well in this site! This function is built in, you just have to go to settings > "general settings" > "filtering in the app", and settings > "content you see".

But - all of the above ONLY works well if you USE REAL WORDS. There are no "le$bians" or "ledollarbeans" on Tumblr, they are lesbians. You can say lesbian here. You can say "kill". You will be mocked if you say "unalive". You NEED to tag warnings with the actual word, not a misspelled censored version, because otherwise you are actively hurting the people you are trying to help. If I need to avoid images of snakes, you're not helping me if you tag your post #sn4akes. I'm not scared of the word "snakes", I'm scared of images OF snakes, and you've now made it so my filter for "#snakes" isn't going to work.

If I could give you one piece of advice, it would be to go to your General Settings, then Dashboard Preferences and turn ON Show Timestamps and Shorten Long Posts!

Really, you have no idea how much these two small switches will improve your experience here!

helllllooooooo this is very random but I wanted to share it with you:

I was checking the activity "follower" section this morning and I apparently had 482 followers. That seemed really weird to me bc I've been sitting at about 200 for months. so I decided to look at the list. what I found was HUNDREDS of default-pfp, untitled, BOTS. and I'm not kidding, after going through the entire list and blocking all of the bots (it took forever), I was back down to 175 normal humans. so if we do some math rq, that gives me 307 bots. 307.

moral of the story is pls check your follower count if you don't like tumblr bots :D

I will do that now at least once a week, I'm sure.

Man, I need to be a lot better about tagging my answers for Tumblr newbie advice... otherwise I would say just click on that tag and there you are, and I don't have to repeat myself...

If you're "fresh off the boat" in joining Tumblr and just starting out, welcome! Here are a few things to remember:

Make sure you get yourself a new profile pic when you can, so people don't assume you're a bot when you start following blogs. It can be anything you like, as long as it's not the default Tumblr sphere and cone faces, or a scantily clad humans (usually female) making poses and selfies. :P

Whether you're new or a Tumblr veteran, we are all treated the same. No one knows other people's follower counts, it's not publically broadcasted like Twitter and Instagram, or Youtube subscribers or Facebook friends. Which means there's no need to put people on pedestals, or look down on others.

Don't be afraid of liking and reblogging posts. When you reblog things, you can say nothing, or you can write something relevant or clever in your post addition, hide your thoughts in the tags, or whisper to OP in the comment section.

This is an app / site where you can be yourself. Enjoy the things you like, express yourself how you want to. You might feel like you're screaming into the void for a while at first, but it's not that hard to find people who like the same things you like.

Try to keep your head on straight and your wits about you. They call it Tumblr because it's easy to tumble down the rabbit hole and wind up in strange, whimsical places where everyone is crazy and mad and don't make a lick of sense. If you're a little weird and wacky, you'll fit in nicely. If you're lost and questioning what people are talking about with their plinko horses and vanilla extract memes, be patient. You'll find out soon enough.

I didn't go in to try and do something new nor did I expect much of a reaction. I know everyone says that, but honestly some real-life stuff happened and suddenly I had a bunch of free time that I couldn't fill with my usual hobbies without violating my parole. (This username was a steal though, idk how no one took it.)

So I don't really have a solid approach, but I do keep a few things in mind:

Looks kinda matter. By that I mean putting at least some effort into your theme (including the desktop one—you can use Tumblr's preset or do the HTML yourself) and making it match the content you make. Also, good post formatting and tagging goes a long way or make it a car wreck they peer at while slowly driving by

Try to stay on topic. For me at least, one big reason blogs tend to blur together is because they have this fandom (or whatever I initially followed for), other fandoms, politics, aesthetics, memes, etc. all wadded up in one place like the communist eraser my friends and I made in ninth grade. And of course it's their choice, but if someone follows you for Batman, generally they're gonna look through your blog for Batman

Interact with people but don't be annoying. Don't be the follow-for-follow person, the one self-promoting in someone else's reblogs, or the one tagging 69,420 strangers in a post. Follow fans you like, take part in events, or join a fandom Discord. Get to know people and you'll automatically open up the fandomverse

Don't expect anything right away. Even if it's been a while and you only got 13 notes and 4 follows. This isn't Cloutsville, Muskachussetts. It's kind of a dice roll—one post might be the next @certified-iconic-post and another might not land the way you wanted. Also, don't be afraid to experiment and take feedback from others

Relax, have fun, and be true to your internet-curated self. It's easy to tell when someone's fixated on stats or when they're trying to be someone they're not (in terms of content, style, humor, etc.). Fandom is a hobby. It should be something laid-back and enjoyable for everyone. Steer clear of drama, learn to poke fun at your faves, don't dump your tragic backstory or recent divorce until you have level 12 hostages followers, and don't act like you're the greatest thing to walk this fandom because that's me and I will fight you in a Denny's parking lot

gif making advice? (2024)

What do you use in 2024 to easily make gifs and add texts (nothing fancy) from avi files on your desktop in 2024 that's not Adobe? I used to use Instagiffer, which was perfecr for tumblr, but it's not available anymore?

I tried screentogif but the files it generates are far too heavy for tumblr, and resizing/compressing them elsewhere means they're not so great quality. I don't mind paying a bit, but as I mentioned, not Adobe-like price range.

A Friendly Tumblr Reminder

If something is not your cup of tea, you do not have to drink said tea. You don't have to read. You can blacklist certain words or phrases and it will not impair your dash. If someone says something on here and you DO NOT LIKE IT, do not interact until you think it through - because your rebuttals lead to rebuttals to your rebuttals and the INTERNET IS FOREVER, which is a horrific reminder 2-10 years down the road. Also strawman arguments... are a thing. Don't let that shit live rent-free in your head, 'kay? Let it go. Sing the song when needed. I am sure I am missing something else here. If you are under the age of 18, DO NOT interact with blogs that have the 18+ and Minors Do Not Interact in the description. These are adults who respect the law. There is a HUGE grey area here and good Lord, respect it until you turn 18. Set strong boundaries and make them CLEAR. Be respectful. It does not take much to be polite, mute or block. If you have issues with another user, please take screenshots and save them with notes of what happened. Try to de-escalate, if it fails, take it to Tumblr, parents, authorities etc. There is much more to add. I'm old and ran out of gas.

If you haven't already, go download all of your "TikTok" data. The text files will give you the usernames of the people you were following and chances are, a lot fo the time at least, you can find them by that name on other platforms, just fyi.

I mean this name of mine is anon because i just prefer to enjoy TikTok without the same group of people i have on multi platforms and honestly i've made new friends under this so yeah :)

I've been on and and around Tumblr for a dozen years, I know the lore, i have gotten the shoelaces comment in the wild, and my first advice to anyone is change your settings! Just fyi. Also you can hide your likes and who you are following :)

Also porn bots are a thing,they tend to come with waves, just click the ... on their posts/pages and hit "report and block".

And for the love of Pedro Pascal do NOT cross-tag stuff! If you are posting about Pedro Pascal please limit the tags to what he's in, don't tag something random like the kardashians just because it's trending or in the news... a lot of people will just block you for that fyi.
