Here’s What’s Happening in Tucson This Weekend!
Fri 6/14 - Sun 6/16
Happy Friday everyone! Well we're certainly paying for our wonderful May now, aren't we? How we wish for only 100-degree temperatures these days!
You may have missed this morning’s hike (it starts at 9am) but for the next 3 months, you can escape the valley floor heat and head to Mt. Lemmon every Friday morning for a nature hike with an appointed guide from the Sabino Mountain Volunteer Naturalists. A pleasant 25 degree cooler mountain world awaits you!
You know Dad always wanted that ’55 big-block Chevy but instead he dutifully settled for the Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser station wagon so he could you kids around. Payback time. Tomorrow treat him to a classic car show at Old Tucson Studios where he can say to you “yes, he did want that car but you kids where a much better investment!” Whiskey tastings and a steak dinner available too!
Maybe Dad would enjoy some football? Tomorrow at 6pm the Tucson Sugar Skulls take on the Quad City Steam Wheelers who crushed them at the last meeting. It’s ‘win or go home’ time for the Skulls. Seats, beer and air conditioning available at the arena at the TCC.
Enjoy some of the best southwestern foods north of the Mexican border during the Tucson 23 Mexican Food Festival tomorrow from 6 – 9pm. If your taste buds are screaming pizza, pizza, pizza; get tickets for the 2019 Pizza Throwdown tomorrow from 6 – 8 at Fresco Pizzeria on Speedway. Local craft beers are available to wash down all that goodness too!
Finally, take pops to Pops this Sunday night as the Tucson Pops Orchestra features guest conductor David Hernandez Breton who holds the baton during Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture. Will there be an actual canon on stage? Go and find out!
Happy Father's Day to all the Dads out there. We hope your day is as special as you are! Whatever your plans this weekend, enjoy.
If you're brave enough to be out and about this weekend, stop by our open houses at 4033 E 5th Street and 3017 W Sun Ranch Trail and say hi! As always, please let us know if we can be of help to you or someone you know. Warm Regards...Ann, Ron & Corilynn

Day 308: Sunday November 4, 2018 - “Dia de Los Muertos”
Today we processed in the All Souls parade here in Tucson. A mystery - something totally new that Id never done before, which is always a treat. But to know what it is and to see it unfold are two very different things. The idea itself is beautiful, maybe as beautiful of a holiday and celebration as there can be.... a time to remember those that have passed, tell their jokes, sing their song, celebrate them - not sad at their grave, but in the streets with everyone else doing the same thing. As wet met up with Lil Jess, Sofia, and walked the parade route we saw signs, pictures, large ornaments, and displays of all kinds - people doing it in their own ways, celebrating those that have passed on, as a way of having them live on. Bands, dancers, drumlines, and even bagpipes. Some said as many as 100,000 people were out and about - which may be accurate over the whole weekend.
I didnt paint my face this year, my participation more journalistic observer of what this was - seeing it and understanding. Jenna did it up REAL good with her sugar skull and pink wig, and AC even put together a neat outfit complete with calaveras tattoo - it was actually her first time processing full on as well, her friends from Oregon being a big motivator. And Im glad that we did - its very cool and thoughtful and I look forward to being more intentional in preparation of it for next year - a very Tucson cultural thing to do. I’ll start dreaming up a good face paint design now so that Ill be ready. We came home, and AC continued to wear her face and we thought about who we could march for next year. We joked about having a sign for Anthony Bourdain and I could only hope that we could be so lucky as to not have anyone closer to process for between now and then as another year goes by. All the loving tributres of good souls out there on the route today. What a great celebration - even if a tad on the spooky side.
Song: Belinda Carlisle - Heaven Is A Place On Earth
Quote: “The graveyard is not the final resting place of our dear departed but an ephemeral repository of their remains. The real graveyard, however, is somewhere deep in our heart, where we can always visit them at any time of the day, talk about some unforgettable summers, or cry in solitude as if they were always there for us to stay. And should our twilight come, when we can no longer see the light of the day, some people dear to us will build a graveyard in their hearts. They will let us stay for a while or perhaps longer, as long as they continue to remember, but it does not matter anymore. What is comforting to know, no matter how tragic or tranquil our death may be, somewhere somehow someone will always build a sublime place for us to stay.” ― Danny Castillones Sillada

Team Preview - Cedar Rapids River Kings
In 2019, the Cedar Rapids River Kings finished 9th overall with a 1-13 record and will be hosting the Quad City Steamwheelers on the opening day of the 2020 IFL season. The River Kings have had a busy offseason rebuilding their offense and will be aiming to finish with a more favourable record in the upcoming season and hopefully making their first playoff appearance since their 2016 United Conference appearance.
Team Biography
The Cedar Rapids River Kings were established in 2011 as the Cedar Rapids Titans and first competed in the 2012 edition of the Indoor Football League. They were the first indoor football team to be based in Cedar Rapids and played 6 seasons as the Titans before the team was purchased by Roy Choi and Matt Stone who held a naming competition to rename the team in the 2018 offseason. The River Rapids won the contest and a lion logo was selected as the teams official logo to celebrate the cities Czech and Slovak immigrant communities that set up shop in the city in the 1850's. The city is home to a 126,326 population (according to data from 2010) and the National Czech and Slovak Museum.
For their first two seasons, the club played their home games at the Cedar Rapids Ice Centre before moving to their current home at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. After finishing the 2012 season with a 4-10 record the Titans proceeded to follow this season up with 4 straight appearances in the United Conference Championship where they lost to the Sioux City Storm on all four occasions. The team haven't been to the playoffs since the 2016 United Conference championship game and will be aiming to make a push in 2020 based on their offseason acquisitions.
2019 Season
The River Rapids didn't have a lot to celebrate in 2019 as they finished with a 1-13 with their only victory coming against the San Diego Strike Force in a 65-48 thriller at the U.S. Cellular Center in week 3 of the 2019 season. The River Rapids had the worst offense in the IFL in 2019 and this resulted in the team finishing 9th overall ahead of the aforementioned Strike Force and a win behind the Bismarck Bucks and 5 wins behind the Quad City Steamwheelers.
Player to Watch - Michael Dyer (RB)
Michael Dyer moved to the Cedar Rapids River Kings in the offseason after three seasons with the Texas Revolution of the CIF (Champions Indoor Football) from 2017 to 2019. In Texas, Dyer won the 2017 rookie of the year award on the way to the Revolutions 2017 CIF title. He has been an explosive back in the CIF and it will be interesting to see whether he can emulate his success in Cedar Rapids
Dyer is probably better known for his exploits in college. Dyer played college football for Auburn between 2009 and 2012 and was a key member of the Tigers 2011 BCS National Championship victory where he rushed for 143 yards and won the games MVP ahead of team mate Cam Newton. He was well on his way to making it to the NFL but his career took a downward spiral when he got suspended indefinitely by the Tigers for taking synthetic marijuana and owning a weapon used in an armed robbery.
In 2012, Dyer made a transfer request and moved to Arkansas State and whilst sitting a year out (under NCAA rules) was caught with a gun and Marijuana after getting stopped for speeding in January of that year. A video then emerged of the incident in July of that year which resulted in Arkansas State kicking Dyer out of the team on the 28th July 2012.
After the incident Dyer attended Arkansas Baptist College before enrolling at Louisville in 2013 where he played the remainder of his college football career.
Hopefully Dyer will be able to keep on the straight and narrow at Cedar Rapids and help lead the team to a playoff birth this time round.

Here’s What’s Happening in Tucson This Weekend!
Fri 3/8 - Sun 3/10
The importance of exercise as we age is unquestionable. It almost doesn’t matter what the routine is, as long as you stick with it. Getting bored with walking? Head to the Tohono Chul Pollination Path, or try the Sonoran Desert Museum with over 2 miles of walking paths, or check out the Tucson Botanical Garden with over 5 acres of paths and gardens to view. You can head downtown and walk the Presidio Turquoise Trail for 2 miles. Or be different and take up The Tango! See how it’s done this weekend at The International Tango Festival at Casino Del Sol.
This weekend the AZ Jazz Week features the saxophone. Soloists and groups will perform, and free classes will be held. Never underestimate the power of the saxophone. It won the election for our 42nd president of the US.
Do you wonder what the future will be like? Get a sneak preview by heading to The Tucson Convention Center today for the SARSEF Future Innovators Night tonight starting at 5:30pm. See 50 exhibits from tomorrow scientists, leaders and inventors. From smelly sneakers to beating Alzheimer’s see the list of last year’s winners here.
Take in a show! Starting tomorrow you can plan to see American Mariachi at AZ Theatre Company, a comedic play featuring the unthinkable; an all-female mariachi band being formed in the ’70s. Or go back to the ’50s while listening to The Glenn Miller Orchestra at the Fox this Sunday night.
On the sports scene, the season is winding down so take advantage of seeing the Tucson Roadrunners play on home ice tonight and tomorrow. Only 8 more home games to go. Speaking of sports, you can be part of history and see the first home game of The Tucson Sugar Skulls of the Indoor Football League, as they take on the Bismarck Bucks. While today’s top NFL players earn in excess of $10M per year, the average IFL players earn $200 per game. On a field roughly half the size of an NFL field, 8 players per side attempt to score points with touchdowns, field goals, point after kicks, point after dropkicks, and rouges! What? Welcome to a whole new type of football.
If you’re out in the east area this weekend, stop by our open house at 2080 N Tanque Verde Loop and say hi. Regardless of your plans, have a great weekend everyone. And, as always, please let us know if we can be of any help to you or someone you know.

Meanwhile 4 hours later.... (5:54pm) I finally finish framing my Tucson Sugar Skulls signed jersey. I forgot how hard it was framing a football jersey. (Reason why it took 4 hours) but I have to say this came out so great & had fun watching the game while framing this.
