It's been a long time since large herds of bison roamed what is now Treaty 7 territory in Alberta, but Clayton Whitney, manager of the Tsuut'ina Nation's buffalo paddock, can see the impact reintroduction projects are having on the bison population and the surrounding wildlife.
"It's amazing how much animals want to come on this side of the fence with the bison," he told The Current. "We get everything from cougars and bears and moose and deer, elk."

The Best News of Last Week - June 6, 2023
1. Biden orders 20-year ban on oil, gas drilling around tribal site in New Mexico
Hundreds of square miles in New Mexico will be withdrawn from further oil and gas production for the next 20 years on the outskirts of Chaco Culture National Historical Park that tribal communities consider sacred, the Biden administration ordered Friday.
The new order from Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland applies to public lands and associated mineral rights within a 10-mile (16-kilometer) radius of the park. It does not apply to entities that are privately, state- or tribal-owned. Existing leases won’t be impacted either.
2. Groundbreaking Israeli cancer treatment has 90% success rate
An experimental treatment developed at Israel's Hadassah-University Medical Center has a 90% success rate at bringing patients with multiple myeloma into remission.
The treatment is based on genetic engineering technology. They have used a genetic engineering technology called CAR-T, or Chimeric Antigen Receptor T-Cell Therapy, which boosts the patient’s own immune system to destroy the cancer. More than 90% of the 74 patients treated at Hadassah went into complete remission, the oncologists said.
3. Federal Judge Makes History in Holding That Border Searches of Cell Phones Require a Warrant
With United States v. Smith, a district court judge in New York made history by being the first court to rule that a warrant is required for a cell phone search at the border, “absent exigent circumstances”. For a century, the Supreme Court has recognized a border search exception to the Fourth Amendment’s warrant requirement.
4. Indigenous-led bison repopulation projects are helping the animal thrive again in Alberta
Indigenous-led efforts are reintroducing bison to their ancestral lands in Alberta, bringing back an iconic species that was nearly extinct. These reintroduction projects, such as the one led by the Tsuut'ina Nation, have witnessed the positive impact on the bison population and the surrounding wildlife.
The historical decline of bison numbers was due to overhunting and government policies that forced Indigenous peoples onto reserves. These initiatives aim to restore ecological integrity while fostering spiritual and cultural connections with the land and animals. Successful results have been observed in projects like Banff National Park, where the bison population has grown from 16 to nearly 100, providing inspiration for future wilding efforts.
5. Breakthrough in disease affecting one in nine women
Sydney researchers have made a world-first leap forward that could change the treatment of endometriosis and improve the health of women living with the painful and debilitating disease. Researchers from Sydney's Royal Hospital for Women have grown tissue from every known type of endometriosis, observing changes and comparing how they respond to treatments.
It means researchers will be able to vary treatments from different types of endometriosis, determining whether a woman will need fertility treatments.
6. Latvia just elected the first openly gay head of state in Europe
The country’s parliament elected Edgars Rinkēvičs to be its next president, Reuters reported prime minister Krišjānis Kariņš saying.
Rinkēvičs publicly came out as gay in November 2014, posting on Twitter: “I proudly announce I am gay… Good luck all of you.” In a second tweet at the time, he spoke about improving the legal status of same-sex relationships, saying Latvia needed to create a legal framework for all kinds of partnerships.
7. France bans short haul flights
The introduction of France’s short-haul flight ban has renewed calls for Europe to cut down on journeys that could be made by train. Last week France officially introduced its ban on short-haul flights.
The final version of the law means that journeys which can be taken in under 2.5 hours by train can’t be taken by plane. There also needs to be enough trains throughout the day that travellers can spend at least eight hours at their destination.

Headcanons- Enzo Reyes
Hello everyone! I am still swamped with college work but I wanted to post something so here's a little HC page I have had brewing for a while. Expect Rudy and Nova's soon! Also, I have discovered I absolutely love Reyes, and it's a shame he gets so forgotten about. God, I love a strong nose on a person, fan-freaking-tastic. Cura Ut Veleas! ~ Ceadis
Born November 13th, 1987, in Regina, Canada.
His parents were never married and had a contentious co-parenting relationship throughout his life
He moved with his mother to Alberta when he was 7, so he mostly saw his father over breaks and such
He is ¼ Tsuut'ina on his father's side (his father is half Tsuut'ina and half Spanish,) the two bonded over trapping and hunting. When he’s home, he will stay with his cousins on the reserve to go hunting with them.
Complex relationship with eating meat: believes you should only hunt/kill an animal ethically and for sustenance. Morally opposed to food waste.
Can skin a deer in record time and not waste any meat/material from it.
Complicated relationship with Catholicism, but both his mother and father are, at least partially, Roman Catholic.
Both of his parents married others, he has a year older step-sister on his father's side and two younger half-brothers (3 years younger and 5 years younger) on his mother's side.
At age 13 he got into a massive fight with his mother over something silly (he forgot to turn in a take-home math quiz,) so he hitchhiked his way to his father over the course of 5 days. This is when he picked up his forgery skills from a truck driver he got a ride with.
He accidentally evaded the police who were searching for him until he showed up at his father's house unharmed.
Extremely proficient in hunting tracking and forgery.
More than anything the police were just impressed he evaded them so well once he was delivered home safely. Was recommended to join the military by one of the deputies that brought him home.
His first language was French (his mother speaks mostly French), second was Spanish (under his father.) Didn’t speak any English until he was 6 or so. Barely speaks French anymore unless with his mom. Is still fluent in Spanish. Also knows minimal Tsuut’ina to communicate while staying with his family that only speaks it.
Terrible alcohol tolerance, 2 drinks and he’s wasted.
Incredibly emotionally drunk.
Chuy once convinced him to watch a nature documentary while drunk. He cried for thirty minutes when a baby seal got eaten by an orca.
The least braggadocious guy ever, will never volunteer his skills or talk about them.
That being said, he never backs down from a challenge. Just humbly accepts it and usually wins.
The only person who can hunt/track a target better than Price.
Price fucking hates it.
Best friends with Chuy. Package deal.
Enzo is incredibly shy but extroverted, he loves to talk to others and be involved in the action but it’s hard for him to initiate.
Chuy is confident and introverted and acts as a good barrier for Enzo to feel more comfortable when talking with others.
They bonded over a love for the outdoors/hunting, Reyes helped Chuy when his rifle broke down one mission and they’ve been besties since.
Has a tendency to talk back, but not out of a challenge to authority, more out of curiosity.
The “Excuse me teacher, but isn’t it…” kid all grown up and never kicked the habit.
The biggest nerd ever. Warhammer 40k, DND, wildlife fun facts, doesn’t matter.
Trivia legend, he’s read a book on just about everything.
Had to be banned from trivia night because he always wins.
He always has a pack of waterproof playing cards on him, his favorite is a set he got from the Alberta Airport that have wildlife fun facts on every card.
Did you know that Caribou have 4 chambered stomachs and can swim up to 6 miles an hour?
Reyes did.
Reyes told you.
About 4 times.
This past month alone.
But who's keeping count, really?
Reads over a hundred books a year, easily.
Mostly nonfiction focusing on history, he will write out notes to better remember what he’s read.
Is not opposed to fiction books, but does not typically seek them out.
Is in a makeshift book club with Gromsko and Nova
It is a poorly kept secret that he will do weapon mods/maintenance in exchange for books, the issue is finding a book he hasn't read yet.
Is on a first-name basis with his hometown's librarians.
Has been working on and off on a Ph.D. in history through an online/long-distance program.
It is about the purposeful destruction of the Canadian governmental records relating to First Nations regiments in the army during the 19th century. The process has been incredibly slow because he works on it remotely and, as stated, many of the records either do not exist or were intentionally destroyed.
Teddy Bear. Gives great hugs, sweetheart of a man, loves to cook for others, and always volunteers to help people. Just generally a great dude.
This does not extend to his job.
He doesn’t have a weak stomach when it comes to his work.
He is ruthless, he is calculated, he is damn good at what he does.
He gets along well with his comrades, sure, but he’s not letting himself get killed in the field for something stupid.
Incredibly capable. Do not mistake his affability for weakness.

Homesteading (i miss you)
Holding sunburnt breath, across bow valley i thread & braid for the first time, yr only acres away, across bow trail ought i stand up from my desk? reach across chasm & confess? white-knuckles spill no blood, i am paralyzed seeking refuge in the dharma, Triratna, 3 jewels lined-up across bow river.
Urban farmlands terrify a young halfbreed boy, summer mosquito bites sticking to expired paper transit tickets, route #13, or the Red line— pray the gravity of the peace officer's nightstick isn't as harsh this time before sending yr little brother off to an educated kindergarden.
Living underneath the purebred;—waiting within the deep heart of the new west: gently burn the rosemary & sage, ring the Tibetan bowl next to the quartz statue of John A. MacDonald;— the textile misanga i fastened with my lips, not worn by anybody, (i promise i'm good). the army of automated Klansmen draws nearer each day i forget to watch over you.
Taking public transit thru asphalt oceans, watching Rainbow-singing glass reflects lemon sunlight on the Mohkínstsis tower, sprouting like a tree, swaying below a survival-coloured skyline.
Cascades of Nose Hill crocuses encircle the only remaining Hallmark™ card abandoned in Chinook Centre written within are the sounds of the Siksika, the Piikuni, the Kainai, the Tsuut'ina
bludgeoned from the vocal cords of each heart i’ve fallen in love w/. Yr friendship is the heaviest weight i've pulled, giving me twilight-shaded bruises. sharpest paper cuts. poisoned insect bites.

X-Men Evolution ft. Alpha Flight
Been enjoying X-Men Evolution recently, and it made me think about how great an Alpha Flight episode could've been. Hell, there was a Captain America one, so why not?
Anyway, some thoughts about what an Evolution version of the characters might be like:
KIDS -
JEAN-PAUL BEAUBIER / NORTHSTAR:
Age 16, Québécois
Super-speed, flight, can create blinding light by linking with his sister
A jerk, but in his defence is straight up not having a good time. Only does homework for the classes he likes
Backstory only semi-unlocked because it's none of these clowns's business: Kid on his way to being an Olympic-level skier who is hinted to having been blackmailed into joining AF by Guardian, but mostly remains for the sake of his twin sister he only recently reunited with
I didn't bother designing new superhero outfits for JP and JM because why mess with existing perfection?
JEANNE-MARIE BEAUBIER / AURORA:
Age 16, Québécois
Super-speed, flight, can create blinding light by linking with her brother
Either very outgoing and bubbly or very shy and quiet, (depending on if she's Aurora or Jeanne-Marie of course). Definitely forgot about the homework
Backstory unlocked: Raised in a very old-fashioned Catholic boarding school hinted at to be abusive, until running away as Aurora and was found and recruited by Guardian. Really not sure how her DID might be handled in a kid-friendly cartoon, but I think it should still be present because I don't see why children can't be educated on such things
I originally had her civvies designed to reference her 2.0 yellow costume, but then I liked the idea of JM wearing blue and JP wearing pink too much
MARRINA SMALLWOOD:
Age 14, Newfoundlander
Super-speed underwater, can breathe underwater as well as on land
Just happy to be here; tries too hard to seek validation from everyone older than her. Agonizes over not being able to go to public school due to her looks
Backstory unlocked: Was adopted by a small coastal family and raised in a very happy environment, joined AF because she wanted to see more of the outside world and genuinely believes Guardian is teaching them to do good
I literally just drew her in a wetsuit for a superhero outfit lol
ELIZABETH "LIZ" TWOYOUNGMEN / TALISMAN:
Age 15, Albertan / Tsuut'ina
Deus ex machina mystic powers
Running on anxiety and bitterness towards Guardian. Won't let you copy her homework but will help you with your own for as long as it takes
Backstory unlocked: She and her father were recruited to Alpha Flight as what she believes is a PR stunt for so-called Reconciliation. Her magic circlet helps her control her mystical powers, but unlike in the comics she's capable of taking it off
Of all the characters I was most excited to design a new age-appropriate look for her, since 90% of her outfits in the comics look like they're racist Spirit Halloween costumes
ANNE MCKENZIE / SNOWBIRD:
Age 17, Nunavummiuq / Inuk
Animal shape-shifting
Easily forgotten from being so quiet, very prim and proper behaviour that can sometimes come off as up-tight. Studies above and beyond regular homework because she feels like she has to work twice as hard to be respected
Backstory semi-unlocked: With her parents divorced, Anne was used to spending the school year down south with her father and summer up north with her mother, but when her powers started manifesting, her father scorned her and wanted to give up his custody. Instead she now spends her school year under the care of Department H
I hate Snowbird's comic backstory so much; the whole "she's 100% white because her mother was a goddess who temporarily transformed into a white woman to appeal to her white father" makes zero sense and also has gross connotations, so I decided since this is my adaptation, she's not a demigod but rather just a mutant, because why not...
I thought about giving her tunniit, but since I know so little I figured I wasn't the best person to depict them
WALTER LANGKOWSKI / SASQUATCH:
Age 17, British Colombian
Super-strength, super-stamina (when in gamma form)
Biggest nerd in any room, pretty chipper. Will do your homework for you just for fun
Backstory unlocked: Walter was taken in by Department H after being branded as a failed experiment by a group of scientists playing with gamma radiation—except the experiment didn't fail, turning Walter into a gamma mutate, but one with control over himself and the transformation
I had such a hard time trying to decide what to do with this bitch... His power is to turn into a 'cryptid' that is just lifting from spirits across multiple Indigenous cultures so that's really awkward, but I didn't want to leave him out since that felt weird? I do imagine this version of him having a different personality though, where he's less annoying
ADULTS -
JAMES MACDONALD HUDSON / GUARDIAN:
Age 35, Ontarian
Flight and super-strength granted by super-suit
Thinks acting like a Cool Dad™ will make children like him. Believes recruiting kids to work for the government is justified because they have superpowers, but at the same time hypocritically insults the X-Men
Backstory unlocked: Oil corporation research and developer who designed a super-suit for oil extraction, except then the Canadian government put him on the payroll to head Department H for monitoring superhumans in Canada
I knew I still wanted him to be decked out with the maple-leaf because it fits his asshole nature, but I wanted to make him look like he's trying too hard to be Hip
MICHAEL TWOYOUNGMEN:
Age 40, Albertan / Tsuut'ina
Healing mystic powers
Is the actual Cool Dad because he's so chill and actually cares about the well-being of the kids
Backstory Unlocked: A surgeon who turned to traditional medicines in attempt to save his wife when western medicine failed her, and though he he did not succeed, he did discover he had innate mystical powers, putting him on Department H's radar. Just here to protect and patch up the children the best he can
EUGENE JUDD / PUCK:
Age 42, Saskatchewanian
Super-durability
Says thinks like 'back in my day' and 'eh' unironically way too much, low-key waiting on that inevitable divorce between the Hudsons
Backstory semi-unlocked: Is mostly there to train the kids how to be superheroes and survive the experience
Like Snowbird I think Puck's backstory is some bullshit that they should've just left alone instead of trying to create this magic explanation for his dwarfism and chronic pain... just let him be disabled! Disabled superheroes exist! So again, in this version he's just a mutant who happens to also have dwarfism and chronic pain
HEATHER MCNEIL-HUDSON:
Age 37, Albertan
Guardian's wife, tries to be a Team Mom and make up for her annoying husband

365 Marvel Comics Paper Cut-Out SuperHeroes - One Hero, Every Day, All Year…
November 21st - Shaman
Born from a great line of Sarcee mystics of the Tsuut'ina Nation, Michael Twoyoungmen was not interested in learning his grandfather's arts. He chose instead to study medicine and went on to become an accomplished doctor and surgeon. When his wife Katheryn became sick with a rare and terminal illness, Twoyoungmen vowed to find a cure for her by any means necessary. Sadly he failed and his wife passed away. To make matters worse, Katheryn’s death created a rift between Dr. Twoyoungmen and his daughter, Elizabeth.
Having lost his wife and become estranged from his daughter, Twoyoungmen wandered through the woods of northern Canada in search of a new path for himself. Here he encountered the spirit of his grandfather who taught him the scared arts of Sacree Magic.
Whit honing his skills as a sorcerer, Twoyoungmen encountered a woodland goddess who was in distress. Twoyoungmen offered her aide and ended up helping the goddess deliver her child, Narya.
To ensure the infant’s survival, Twoyoungmen bound her to the lands of Canada, thus allowing her to assume human form. He raised the rapidly maturing Narya as his own daughter, and both were soon recruited into Alpha Flight as Shaman and Snowbird. Twoyoungman’s decision to participate as a member of Alpha Flight was primarily to ensure that the powerful Narya would not be misused nor taken advantage of.
As Shaman, Twoyoungman would go on to have many adventures alongside Alpha Flight. Soon, Narya was old enough, strong and wise enough to no longer need his protection and guidance. His daughter, Elizabeth, would go on to become apt magic user in her own right and the two were eventually able to reconcile.
More recently, Dr. Twoyoungman accepted a position teaching indigenous sorcery at The Strange Academy.
Shaman first appeared in the pages of X-Men Vol. 1 #120 (1979).

Yexyexéscen (also spelled "Yuh-hai-has-kun") means The Mountain of the Spiral Road. This Indigenous name was bestowed upon Mount Robson by the Texqakallt, the earliest inhabitants of the area. It refers to the mountain's distinct rock bands visible in this image captured on the shores of Berg Lake. Today is National Indigenous Peoples Day, a day recognizing and celebrating the cultures and contributions of the First Nations, Inuit and Métis Indigenous peoples of Canada. As such I also want to recognize that I live, work and play on Treaty 7 territory, the traditional lands of the Stoney Nakoda Nations: Wesley, Chiniki, and Bearspaw; the Blackfoot Confederacy: the Piikani, Kainai, and Siksika; and the Tsuut'ina First Nations. Treaty 7 territory is shared with the Métis Nation of Alberta (Region III). #NationalIndigenousPeoplesDay #NIPD2021 — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/3xRTM9Z

WARNING: This story contains distressing details.
More than 800 people, many wearing orange, walked silently Monday on the Tsuut'ina Nation near Calgary in honour of Indigenous children buried at the former Kamloops Indian Residential School.
Many of the participants wore T-shirts with the number 215 written on them, while others had shirts that read: "Every child matters." Some were pushing strollers, while those carrying their children held on to them tightly.
People pinned orange and yellow ribbons on a white bulletin board at an outdoor arena where the walk came to an end.
Late last month, the Tk'emlups te Secwepemc First Nation in British Columbia announced the finding of an unmarked burial site containing what are believed to be the remains of 215 Indigenous children at the Kamloops Indian Residential School site.
