The First Amendment and the Chilmark Library

Last summer, The Chilmark Free Public Library, located on the island of Martha’s Vineyard, did not invite defense attorney and retired Harvard law professor Alan Dershowitz to speak at its library. Dershowitz, a frequent Martha’s Vineyard visitor, claimed that this lack of invitation was a form of censorship and infringed on his First Amendment right of free speech. Dershowitz threatened to sue the library, but he later issued a letter of apology.

Dershowitz is known for his work in American criminal law and constitutional law. In his career, he has represented many high-profile clients, including Jeffrey Epstein, Mike Tyson, and O.J. Simpson. From 2009 to 2017, Dershowitz spoke at the Chilmark library seven times – four times by invitation and three times at his own request.[1]

In 2020, he was a part of President Trump’s defense team for the president’s first impeachment trial. However, Dershowitz claimed that after speaking at the library on a regular basis, this new role is one reason he was “cancelled” not only at the Chilmark Library, but at multiple venues in Martha’s Vineyard.

In an interview last year, Dershowitz stated, “Every year, they would have an overflow crowd to hear me speak about whatever book I was writing, or whatever I was doing. But suddenly, after I represented the Constitution on behalf of President Trump, the library found excuses for never having me. Their first excuse was that my crowds were too big. So I said, “Well, why don’t you limit the crowds?” They said, “Oh, we hadn’t thought of that.” … So I’ve been cancelled, basically, by the Chilmark Library”.[2]

The First Amendment states that, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances”.[3] Because of this fundamental right, the Chilmark Library had to show that there was “compelling reason” to disallow someone from utilizing the First Amendment and speaking in the space.

According to the MV Times, library director Ebba Hierta said that in past years, “The reason I grew reluctant to extend invitations to Alan [Dershowitz] is this: The circus that surrounds this man who so ably courts controversy got in the way of the library’s important mission — serving the residents and visitors of Chilmark. When 200-plus people crammed into the library, with dozens more milling about harassing staff because they couldn’t hear the lecture; when local businesses lost money because our patrons filled their parking lots; when patrons not interested in hearing Alan could not take care of their library business; that’s when I realized the eminent Harvard professor emeritus had outgrown our little library”.[4] In addition, the trustees of the library claimed that last summer, Dershowitz had requested to talk after the summer schedule had already been finalized.

In contrast to last summer, Dershowitz was allowed to speak in Summer 2023. At the Chilmark Library, he gave a talk on his new book, “Dershowitz on Killing: How the Law Decides Who Shall Live and Who Shall Die”.  While the library had set an attendance limit at 25 for Dershowitz’s event, this capacity was not exceeded by listeners. In this talk, Dershowitz highlighted his advocacy for organ donation and belief against the death penalty, but he did not mention his previous controversy with the library.[5]

The conspiracy isn't that there is a secret sex ring in hollywood of pedophiles. the conspiracy is that all those people are jewish demons sanctioned by satan. That's what you should be calling out, not the facts they use to get people to stay in these types of cults.

this is an example but all cults have a kernel of truth in them because that's how the bad guys get people sucked in. They prey on their reality (poverty) to point at a red herring (jewish people, black people, trans people, gay people, women, whatever) so that when we tell them that they're crazy, they're most likely to seek out community in their cult and thus get further programmed into it.

Like it or not, you have to express as much empathy as possible if you're going to engage with these people with the goal of deconverting them. You're going to have to learn to see where they're struggling and hurting and appeal to that with truth and facts, instead of going on the defensive or insulting them. I'm not saying you have to engage with these people at all, I'm saying if you choose to do so you need to learn what you're actually trying to deconstruct instead of calling the entire thing insanity.

Right because think of it like a scientist right, or a psychologist. How do people believe crazy ass shit like JFK is still alive and helping Trump? It's because it starts at a more basic level, where they start a conspiracy called pizzagate claiming clinton is part of a secret sex trafficking ring above a random pizzeria.

Here's the kicker: bill clinton went to pedophile island, and this was later revealed YEARS after pizzagate. But "clinton is part of a secret sex ring of hollywood elites" is something that people in the qanon cult got RIGHT YEARS before epstein was arrested. To them, it looks like they got only the fucking LOCATION wrong. Do you see why it's dangerous to write this shit off as crazy yet? Because I'm going to explain further.

Pizzagate is a conspiracy that was designed to isolate people from the broader community. The creators of that conspiracy knew that the pizzeria thing was crazy enough (idk if there was an anti-semitic element to the conspiracy, it's been years and i'm going off memory here, but if there was that element is always a great isolation method for radicalization) to not be believed by the broader community, because it was outlandish that a pizza place is a secret demonic sex ring. But there was a lot of truth in that conspiracy embedded in there.

The pedophile sex ring of hollywood is well-documented. Clinton is the clear target, since this theory was started or endorsed by trump supporters back in 2016, and the fact that a billionaire later confirmed that clinton was part of his pedophile island, that would lead a lot of those original believers to feel vindicated in believing the conspiracy theory. That vindication allows them to more easily believe the truly outlandish shit they believe in present day 2023.

Back in 2016, people on the right believed in this pizzagate conspiracy and were told they were crazy for it. The right used Brandon Fraser and other male victims to validate pizzagate as a theory and this led to a further escalation of theories.

I think the best part about this for me is that as I debate whether I'm going to do it or not, I remember I'm only going to do it if I want to, and then I do it or don't. No need, no goal, no hope, no justification, just doing. And doing in a way that I'm not overly critical of myself. So welcome to me time.

I tend not to read after I posted. Although to pretend that I don't reflect and desire to go back and read would be unrealist. I have half glanced, but I know I need to let it lie. It's just my thoughts my thinking that I'm putting down and letting be. If you end up having problems with it at some point, the anonymous reader in a future point of time, and decide that you want to hurt me or my family due to some fragment of my perspective that you perceived undesirable. Returning to reflection, I do. I feel bad about talking shit on Hunter, I feel like I didn't adequately address the fact that I wholeheartedly believe Disney was not overtly racist. But I wouldn't change those decisions. Although my feelings could change with the addition of new information. Moreover, I'm afraid it's a matter of our intelligence community and senior operatives. We all know the secret service will use hookers. It's standard practice (until people became aware that it was standard practice). So what's to say that senior officers aren't fucking children because it's what gets them off. I don't really know, and TBH this post comes with a disclaimer at the bottom. Because I don't know whose names were in the books. Apparently it was a matter of national security that we don't get to know whose names are in the books. I wish I could get those books and make those names public. But I would put $1 million I do not have on a bet saying those books no longer exist. And I would also put a bet on the fact that that judge or any other person that was actually privy to the information within those books is either no longer alive or shortly will not be. It's sad. I'm sad. You make me sad. You evil motherfuckers.

In recently unsealed court documents involving dead child sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein and his alleged accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell, a woman named Virginia Giuffre, who publicly accused Epstein of sex trafficking, said that she once saw former Democratic President Bill Clinton on Epstein's island with "two young girls" from New York.In the questioning by lawyer Jack Scarola, Guiffre was asked, "Do you have any recollection of Jeffrey Epstein's specifically telling you that 'Bill Clinton owes me favors?'""Yes, I do," Guiffre answered. "It was a laugh though. He would laugh it off. You know, I remember asking Jeffrey what's Bill Clinton doing here [on Epstein's island] kind of thing, and he laughed it off and said well he owes me favors."

"He never told me what favors they were," Guiffre continued. "I never knew. I didn't know if he was serious. It was just a joke... He told me a long time ago that everyone owes him favors. They're all in each other's pockets."

Shortly thereafter, Scarola asked her "Were sexual orgies a regular occurrence on the island at Jeffrey's house?" Guiffre responded, "Yes."

Scarola then asked if she was ever present with Epstein and Clinton on the island.

"Ghislane, Emmy [another girl who was allegedly a regular at Epstein's house], and there was 2 young girls that I could identify. I never really knew them well anyways. It was just 2 girls from New York," Guiffre answered, and said they were all staying in Epstein's house on the island.

In a statement to Newsweek on Friday, a Clinton spokesperson denied the allegation, saying he has "never been to Little St. James Island." The claim had previously been made by Clinton representatives in 2019.

"He'd not spoken to Epstein in well over a decade," Angel Ureña added. "Well before his terrible crimes came to light."

Epstein had multiple ties to Clinton, and Clinton—along with many other big name celebrities—was a repeated passenger on Epstein's private Boeing 727 plane which was nicknamed the "Lolita Express" due to the frequent delivery of apparently underage women to the island of Little Saint James, a reference to the 1955 Vladimir Nabokov novel about a 36-year-old literature professor who sexually engages a 12-year-old girl.

In 2002, Epstein hosted Clinton—as well as actors Kevin Spacey and Chris Tucker—on a 2002 tour of Africa associated with the Clinton Foundation. Epstein called Clinton "the world's greatest politician." In a 2002 New York magazine article in which President Donald Trump mentioned Epstein's predilection for girls "on the younger side," Clinton praised Epstein.

In 2015, the now-defunct pop-culture and news website Gawker released the flight logbooks for Epstein's Gulfstream and the Lolita Express 727. Clinton is listed as having taken at least 11 flights on the Lolita Express.

In one flight, Clinton allegedly flew with a softcore porn actress listed under "massages" in Epstein's address book. On all 11 flights, he rode with Maxwell and Epstein's former assistant Sarah Kellen. Kellen has been accused in court filings of recruiting young girls, acting as a pimp on Epstein's behalf.

On multiple flights, additional women who flew with Clinton are either listed by only their first name or simply as "female."

A 2019 statement from The Clinton Foundation claimed that Clinton "knows nothing about the terrible crimes Jeffrey Epstein pleaded guilty to," adding, "Clinton took a total of four trips on Jeffrey Epstein's airplane.

"Staff, supporters of the Foundation, and his Secret Service detail traveled on every trip," the statement continued. "He's not spoken to Epstein in well over a decade, and has never been to Little St. James Island, Epstein's ranch in New Mexico, or his residence in Florida."

Newsweek reached out to the Clinton Foundation for comment.

I spent all day writing only to emerge tonight to a flood of news.

Some of it is tragic but seems random: a man apparently drove a car into a barricade near the White House, injuring two Capitol Police officers before hitting the barrier. He got out of the car with a knife, and police officers shot him when he did not respond to their commands. He died. So did one of the Capitol Police officers, an 18-year veteran of the force, Officer William “Billy” Evans. The assailant has been identified as 25-year-old Noah Green of Indiana, and he appears to have feared that the CIA and the FBI were targeting him with mind control.

Other news seems to be about rebuilding the nation from the troubles of the previous administration: President Joe Biden had a 30-40 minute phone call with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in which Biden reaffirmed U.S. support for Ukraine’s burgeoning democracy as Russia builds up troops in the region. Former president Trump soured the U.S. relationship with Ukraine when he tried to get Zelenskyy to announce an investigation into Hunter Biden, Joe Biden’s son, to discredit the man he expected—correctly—to be his main rival in the 2020 presidential election, before Trump would release money Ukraine needed to defend itself against Russia.

Also today, the U.S. and Iran agreed to talk again about the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, the nuclear deal that Trump abandoned, to limit Iran’s program of enriching uranium that could be used for a nuclear weapon. With our abandonment of JCPOA, Iran resumed elements of its enrichment program. Both sides are hoping to make headway on a new deal before Iran’s presidential election in June.

The United States has also lifted sanctions the Trump administration had imposed on the top prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, Fatou Bensouda, after she began an investigation into U.S. forces in Afghanistan for alleged war crimes. The U.S. is not a member of the court, and the Biden administration says it disagrees strongly with the court’s actions but wants to address those concerns through engagement rather than sanctions.

In a new indictment yesterday, prosecutors revealed that the founder of the Oath Keepers, Stewart Rhodes, his deputy, and three members of the far-right group who acted as guards for Trump loyalist Roger Stone exchanged 19 phone calls over three hours during the January 6 attack on the Capitol. The indictment indicates that federal officials have a very clear timeline of the events of that day.

The trial of Derek Chauvin for the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis, Minnesota, continues. Today Lt. Richard Zimmerman, the head of the Minneapolis police department’s homicide division, testified that kneeling on Floyd’s neck while he was handcuffed, as Chavin did, was “totally unnecessary,” and that the officers should “absolutely” have stopped restraining Floyd once he was in handcuffs, as that position on its own makes it hard to breathe.

And then there are the ways in which the country appears to be roaring back from the low point of the past year. Today U.S. healthcare professionals put almost 4 million shots into arms, bringing our daily average for the past week to almost 3 million. Nearly 40% of all adults in the U.S. have had at least one dose of the vaccine. And yet, coronavirus infections are rising again, spurred by new, highly contagious variants of the virus into areas where safety precautions have been relaxed. The seven-day average of new cases is more than 62,000 cases a day, with just below 900 deaths a day.

The Labor Department today said that the U.S. added 916,000 jobs in March, the best job growth since last August, dropping the unemployment rate to 6%. This is excellent news, but we still have 8.4 million fewer jobs than we had in February 2020, before the pandemic.

And then there is Representative Matt Gaetz (R-FL), who is at the center of a scandal which includes pretty much everything: women, girls, state lines, drugs, cash, fake IDs, and so on. Where it will all end up is entirely unclear, but it is notable that the Fox News Channel, where Gaetz has been a regular, made a point of stating that it has “no interest” in hiring Gaetz. Only Representatives Jim Jordan (R-OH) and Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) have spoken out to defend Gaetz, and both of them have troubles in their own backgrounds.

But the lasting story today is the one that will hang over everything until it is resolved: the attempt of Republican legislators in 43 states to suppress voting with what are now 361 voter suppression bills across the country.

Today Major League Baseball announced it was pulling the 2021 All-Star Game and the MLB draft from Georgia in response to the state’s new voter suppression law, passed last week. The announcement drew fury from Republican officials.

They attacked MLB’s move by as a product of “cancel culture and woke political activists.” Georgia Governor Brian Kemp and Georgia House Speaker David Ralston released a statement blaming “this attack on our state” on President Biden and voting rights activist Stacey Abrams and insisting that the bill in fact expands, rather than contracts, the right to vote. Ralston said that “Stacey Abrams’ leftist lies have stolen the All-Star Game from Georgia…. But Georgia will not be bullied by socialists and their sympathizers.”

Republican politicians also piled on at the national level. Representative Buddy Carter (R-GA) tweeted that MLB was “[t]otally caving to the lies of the Left” and called for a baseball boycott. Senator Tom Cotton (R-AR) called it “a cowardly boycott based on a lie.” Then Representative Jeff Duncan (R-SC) called for Congress to retaliate against MLB with a law to remove MLB’s antitrust exception. The former president urged his supporters to “boycott baseball” and the companies that do not support Georgia’s new voter suppression bill.

But journalists Nick Corasaniti and Reid J. Epstein of the New York Times today reviewed the new 98-page Georgia voting law and had one primary takeaway: “The Republican legislature and governor have made a breathtaking assertion of partisan power in elections, making absentee voting harder and creating restrictions and complications in the wake of narrow losses to Democrats.” Sixteen key provisions hamper the right to vote, especially in the urban and suburban counties that vote Democratic, or take power away from state and local election officials—like the secretary of state, who refused to throw the election to Trump in 2020—and give it to partisan legislators.

If it’s true that the Georgia law is no big deal, Democracy Docket founder and election law defender Marc Elias asked, “why are three separate Republican Party Committees spending money intervening in court to defend it—claiming that if the law is struck down it will disadvantage the [Republicans] in elections?”

MLB’s decision was actually not prompted by Stacey Abrams, who rejected calls for a boycott and urged companies not to leave the state but to stay and fight for voting rights. She tweeted that she was “disappointed” that MLB would move the All-Star Game “but proud of their stance on voting rights.”

Former House Speaker John Boehner, who presided over the House during the Republican wave of 2010, published a preview of his forthcoming book that makes some sense of the Republican attempt to divert attention to Abrams. He says that the rise of the internet meant that by 2010, Republican lawmakers were taking their orders from internet media websites and the Fox News Channel, their only aim to keep viewers engaged and cash flowing.

The Republican focus on media, rather than policy, has mushroomed until lawmakers are now reduced to talking about Dr. Seuss and the Potato Head clan rather than answering the needs of voters, with no policy besides “owning the libs.”
