Opening Dawn McGill’s office was a whirlwind of chaos, much like the hurricane that had just upended her carefully laid plans. She stood behind her desk, her 6-foot frame cutting an imposing figure in a form-fitting red blazer and black pencil skirt. Her medium-length blonde hair was slightly disheveled, a testament to the long night she’d endured rewriting the entire show.

“Damn Hurricane Milton,” Dawn muttered, shuffling through a stack of papers. “As if running a political wrestling company wasn’t hard enough without Mother Nature throwing a clothesline at us.”

She slammed her fist on the desk, scattering papers everywhere. The sound echoed through the room, a physical manifestation of her frustration. Dawn took a deep breath, trying to center herself.

Her eyes darted to the framed Henhouse magazine cover on her wall, featuring herself in a provocative pose. The memory of that photoshoot still made her proud; she looked pretty damn good in the photos. But more importantly, it had given her the seed money to resurrect PCW from the ashes of political discord.

Dawn’s lips curved into a wry smile.  She straightened her blazer, her mind racing with potential solutions. Hurricane Milton had forced them to cancel the television taping last Thursday.

Dawn’s cell phone suddenly blared to life, playing an ironic rendition of “Hail to the Chief.” She rolled her eyes, knowing exactly who was calling.

“Yes, Kamala,” Dawn answered, her voice dripping with forced patience. “No, I’ve got this under control.” She quickly ended the call, tossing the phone onto her desk with a sigh.

Dawn McGill turns to face the camera, her platinum blonde hair catching the harsh fluorescent light of her office. She leans forward, her low-cut blouse revealing just enough to keep the audience’s attention.

“Ladies and gentlemen, PCW fans,” she purred, a hint of steel beneath her honeyed tone. “Tonight’s show had to be rewritten because of Hurricane Milton.  We had to cancel our Florida house show because of the hurricane.  Instead, we’re going to replay three huge PCW matches for you tonight.”

She ticked them off on her manicured fingers, her eyes gleaming with anticipation.

“First up, we’re going to replay last week’s barn-burner between J.D. Vance and Tim Walz. Then, the clash of titans from last month – Donald Trump versus Kamala Harris. And finally, airing for the first time ever on PCW…”

Dawn paused for dramatic effect, savoring the moment.

“…thank you, Elon Musk… we’re bringing you the replay of the Donald Trump versus Joe Biden match from June!  Then next week, we will have the number one contender’s match for the PCW Women’s Title… Kathryn Randall Collins of the Progressive Alliance, ‘Colorado Gunslinger’ Laura Brobert of the American Patriots, and the American Heartland Coalition’s Sarah Mae Smith. Also next week, we will also have a #1 contender’s match between “Mr. Hollywood” Kevin Daniels of the Progressive Alliance vs. Kirk Walstreit of the American Patriots to determine PCW Champion Charlie Blackwell’s opponent at next month’s Extreme Election Night 2024 ”

“Alright, folks,” Dawn addressed the camera once more. “Let’s kick things off with Vance versus Walz. Johnny Suave, take it away!”

As the feed switched to the match, Dawn slumped in her chair, muttering, “I need a damn drink.”

MATCH #1: Tim Walz (Progressive Alliance) vs. J.D. Vance (American Patriots) with Special Referees Norah O’Donnell and Margaret Brennan of ABC News- Taped October 1st at The Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City The Hammerstein Ballroom erupted in a cacophony of cheers and boos as the opening chords of “Hillbilly Elegy” blasted through the speakers.

Johnny Suave: Here we go.  It’s time for our main event and J.D. Vance is coming out first.

J.D. Vance emerged from behind the curtain, his chiseled physique barely contained by his red, white, and blue tights. The American Patriots’ golden boy raised his fists triumphantly, basking in the adoration of his supporters.

Johnny Suave: And here comes the Appalachian Avenger! J.D. Vance, looking to make a statement for the American Patriots tonight and help Donald Trump!

Vance’s eyes narrowed as he scanned the crowd. As he strode confidently down the aisle, the music abruptly shifted to “The Internationale.” Tim Walz, the Progressive Alliance champion, slinked towards the ring, clutching a kendo stick like a lifeline. His eyes darted nervously from side to side.

Johnny Suave: And here comes Tim Walz.  He looks like he’s about to wet himself.

Both men entered the ring, tension crackling between them. Special referees Norah O’Donnell and Margaret Brennan of CBS News took their positions, their expressions a mix of determination and trepidation.

Johnny Suave: This is it. The last big match before Extreme Election Night 2024.  The last match between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris was a farce because of the blatant interference of ABC’s David Muir and Kinsey Davis.  Let’s hope tonight is different.

Colleen Crowder: Let’s hope not.  Muir and Davis were fair and so will O’Donnell and Brennan…

…Vance’s gaze fell on a steel chair at ringside. A wicked grin spread across his face as he grabbed it, the metal cold against his palms.

Johnny Suave: Vance has a chair.

Colleen Crowder: That is definitely not legal.

*WHACK*

Vance brought the chair crashing down on Walz’s back.

Johnny Suave: HOLY CRAP!

The Progressive Alliance champion crumpled to the mat, a pained groan escaping his lips.

Johnny Suave: And he’s going to do it again!

Colleen Crowder: STOP HIM MARGARET… NORAH!

As Vance reared back for another chair shot, Brennan stepped between them.

Margaret Brennan: We need to move on.  There’s a lot of ground to cover.

O’Donnell took the chair away from Vance, who looked at her incredulously.

The crowd’s roar crescendoed as Walz, somehow finding a reserve of strength, flailed wildly at Vance. His punches were sloppy and desperate, but the sheer volume threatened to overwhelm the American Patriot.

Johnny Suave: Walz is throwing everything he’s got!

But Vance ducked under and lifted Walz, bringing him down on his knee.

Johnny Suave: ATOMIC DROP BY VANCE!

Vance rolled over to cover but… O’Donnell stepped forward yet again, her voice tinged with exasperation.

Noral O’Donnell: We really need to move on-

The crowd erupted in a mixture of cheers and boos, the tension in the arena palpable.

Seizing the moment of distraction, Vance’s hand found another steel chair and raised it once more.

Colleen Crowder: Where do these chairs keep coming from?

Johnny Suave: HOLY CRAP!

With a resounding crack that echoes through the Hammerstein Ballroom, Vance brought the chair down on Walz’s skull. The Progressive Alliance champion crumpled to the mat like a marionette with cut strings.

Vance dropped for the cover, his chest heaving.

Johnny Suave: Vance for the win…

O’Donnell and Brennan both stood motionless, refusing to make the count.

Johnny Suave: …but O’Donnell and Brennan aren’t making the three count.  What the f-

The crowd roared as a blur of blonde hair and determination stormed down the ramp.

Johnny Suave: WAIT A MINUTE!  HERE COMES DAWN McGILL!

PCW owner Dawn McGill, her eyes blazing and her 6-foot frame radiating authority, slid into the ring.

Colleen Crowder: Why is she interfering in this match?

McGill glared at both O’Donnell and Brennan as she stands up.

Dawn McGill: Oh, for Christ’s sake.

Without hesitation, she dropped to the mat, her hand slapping the canvas with each count.

Dawn McGill: One! Two! Three! Ring the damn bell!

*DING-DING-DING*

The resounding thud of Dawn McGill’s hand striking the canvas for the third time reverberated through the Hammerstein Ballroom. She sprang to her feet, her blonde hair whipping around as she signaled for the bell.

O’Donnell and Brennan stood frozen, their expressions a mix of shock and indignation. Dawn’s piercing glare silenced any protest they might have mustered.

At ringside, Colleen Crowder’s carefully cultivated composure shattered.

Colleen Crowder: This is an outrage!

She shrieked, her perfectly coiffed hair came undone as she gesticulated wildly.

Colleen Crowder: McGill is overstepping her bounds! This is a clear violation of journalistic integrity in wrestling!  We… the media decide who wins or loses… not-

Johnny Suave: Your winner tonight is J.D. Vance and the American Patriots strike a blow against the Progressive Alliance!

Vance stood tall in the ring, his chest heaving with exertion and triumph. Dawn raised his arm, her face a mask of determination.

The crowd’s reaction was a perfect storm of cheers and boos, a microcosm of the nation’s divided state. Some fans pumped their fists in the air, while others hurled invectives at the ring.

Meanwhile… Dawn McGill leaned back in her leather chair, a smirk playing on her glossy lips as she recalled the Vance-Walz match. Her fitted blazer strains slightly as she gestured animatedly.

“Let me tell you, folks, when those CBS prima donnas refused to do their jobs, I had to step in. There I was, in my stilettos, sliding into the ring to count the pin. One! Two! Three! Vance takes it!”

She chuckled, imagining the shocked faces of O’Donnell and Brennan. Those media elites thought they were too good for PCW? Ha!

Suddenly, her phone blared “Hail to the Chief” – Kamala’s ringtone. Dawn’s eyes rolled so hard they nearly fall out of her head.

“Yes, Kamala,” she sighed, pinching the bridge of her nose. “No, I’m fine. Everything’s okay. Again, it’s under control.”

God, this woman is relentless, Dawn thought. Can’t she take a hint?

“Listen, Kamala, why don’t you call Ron DeSantis and ask if he needs help?”

Dawn pulled the phone away from her ear as Kamala’s shrill voice reaches new octaves.

“Oh, you did? And he told you to go what?” She stifles a laugh and takes a deep breath, centering herself. “Kamala, I’ve got this. Everything is fine. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have a show to run.”

She ends the call abruptly, tossing the phone onto her desk with a satisfying thud.

“Let me tell you something about Catherine Cline,” Collins snarls, her eyes blazing with contempt. “That little rookie thinks she can waltz into PCW and take what’s rightfully mine? I’ve been grinding in this political wrestling game for years, paying my dues, shaking hands and kissing babies.”

She slams her fist on the desk, scattering papers. “And what does Cline do? She jumps the line with her flashy moves and pretty face. It’s an insult to every veteran who’s bled for this business!”

Collins paces, her heels clicking aggressively on the floor. She’s fuming, her carefully crafted image cracking under the weight of her anger. How dare they overlook her years of service for some upstart?

“Now they want me to wrestle the ‘Colorado Gunslinger’ Laura Brobert and Sarah Mae ‘American Girl’ Smith for a shot at the title? Please.” She scoffs, rolling her eyes. “I am the ‘Ultimate Political Operative.  I’ve earned that shot. I deserve it. I shouldn’t have to prove myself to anyone, least of all those two second-rate politicos.”

Turning to face the camera directly, Collins leans in close, her voice dropping to a menacing whisper. “Brobert, Smith… you’re both just speed bumps on my road to the PCW Women’s Title. And when I get there, I’ll show everyone what a real political operative can do.”

With a final glare, Collins straightens her jacket and storms off, leaving the room in tense silence.

MATCH #2: Donald Trump (American Patriots) vs. Kamala Harris (Progressive Alliance) with Special Referees David Muir and Kinsey Davis of ABC News- Taped September 10th in Philadelphia, PA The arena pulses with anticipation, the air thick with expectation as Kamala Harris’s theme erupts through the speakers. She strides confidently down the ramp, her eyes fixed on the ring that has become a battleground of ideology and ego. The audience reacts with a mix of cheers and jeers, but she is unfazed; every step is a statement, each stride exuding the poise of a seasoned political combatant.

Johnny Suave: “Kamala making her way to the ring, Colleen, and you can see she’s ready for this unprecedented matchup.”

Johnny Suave’s voice booms over the crowd’s clamor, his tone betraying no allegiance.

Colleen Crowder: “Absolutely, Johnny.”

Colleen’s bias was thinly veiled.

Colleen Crowder: “She’s been preparing for this moment, and I’m confident she’ll uphold the values of the Progressive Alliance.”

Before the echoes of Harris’s entrance fade, the familiar brassy strains of the Imperial March meld into a rhythmic chant that shakes the very foundations of the 2300 Arena. “TRUMP! TRUMP! TRUMP!” The crowd’s fervor reaches a fever pitch as Donald Trump emerges, his supporters’ voices transforming the melody into an anthem of unwavering support: “TRUMP. TRUMP. TRUMP. TRUMP-TRUMP-TRUMMMMP TRUMP-TRUMP-TRUMMMMP.”

Johnny Suave: “Listen to this crowd, Colleen! You can feel the electricity here tonight!”

Suave has to shout to be barely heard above the din.

Trump descends the ramp like a king surveying his domain, his expression one of unassailable confidence. He climbs into the ring, his presence alone commanding attention as he surveys the crowd, basking in the adulation of his base.

Johnny Suave: “Both competitors are now in the ring, and here come our special guest referees, ABC’s David Muir and Kinsey Davis.”

The two figures slip between the ropes, impartiality promised in their professional nods to each competitor.

Colleen Crowder: “Remember, Johnny, they’re here to ensure fairness.”

Muir and Davis lay out the ground rules, their voices firm despite the uproar surrounding them. They call for respect, for sportsmanship, the principles of the match echoing the grander theater of political discourse. With a final check, the bell rings, and the battle commences.

From the outset, Harris is tentative, gauging her opponent with careful moves, testing the waters of this high-stakes confrontation. Trump, however, is all aggression—a force of nature unleashed. Quick to seize the advantage, he corners Harris, his tactics as brash and unapologetic as his campaign rallies…

Johnny Suave: “Come on! That’s the third time they’ve done that! It’s three against one in there!”

Colleen Crowder: “Johnny, they’re just doing their job and calling it right down the middle.”

Colleen’s tone was laced with condescension.

Johnny Suave: “Right down the middle my ass!”

Within the ring, Trump regains control. His movements are relentless, his attacks precise. Yet, Muir and Davis insert themselves once again, this time more overtly than before, shielding Harris from Trump.

Johnny Suave: “Oh come on!  How can you say this isn’t three on one!”

Colleen Crowder: “Absolutely not, they’re ensuring a fair match.”

Before another word could be uttered, the arena’s atmosphere shifts and the crowd pops.

Johnny Suave: “What’s this?”

PCW owner Dawn McGill makes her entrance.

Johnny Suave: “HOLY CRAP!  DAWN McGILL IS COMING TO THE RING!’

Dawn stormed down the ramp with a fury that matches the intensity of the crowd’s excitement. She’s businesslike but her presence commands attention, much like in her Henhouse Magazine photo shoot.

Crowd: “PCW! PCW! PCW!”

Dawn slides into the ring with the grace of a seasoned pro, snatching the mic from Muir’s hand.

Dawn McGill: “What the *BLEEP* is this?”

Her gaze pierced through both referees.

Dawn McGill: “I’m calling for the bell!”

Johnny Suave: “WOW!”

Colleen Crowder: “Johnny this is outrageous!”

Johnny Suave: Dawn McGill has called for the bell and ended the match because of the poor refereeing.

Colleen protested vehemently.

Colleen Crowder: “She has no right to interfere in this match!  Muir and Davis were doing their jobs-”

Suave glanced at Colleen, incredulous.

Johnny Suave: “Interfere? Are you kidding me?  Where have you been all match long? She’s restoring order where these so-called impartial referees failed!”

Colleen Crowder: “My fact check says you are one hundred percent wrong.”

Johnny Suave: ‘And you know where you can stick your…”

Johnny did the air quotes thing with his hands.

Johnny Suave: “…’fact-checking.’

Trump stood tall, flashing a smug grin as he declared himself the victor. But Harris wasn’t backing down, her eyes blazing with determination as she yelled out for another match.

Kamala Harris on the Move An airport tarmac buzzes with activity as Kamala Harris storms through, her face a mask of barely contained frustration as she speaks with a group of reporters, her heels clacking against the concrete.

“Can you believe this?” Kamala fumes, addressing the Guild of Low-Level Media People. “Dawn McGill is deliberately shutting me out of tonight’s show!”

Colleen Crowder from the New York Times leans in, her eyes gleaming with the scent of a juicy story. “Tell us more. How exactly is she playing politics?”

Kamala’s nostrils flare as she launches into her grievances. “I’ve called her multiple times offering my assistance, my expertise. But she keeps brushing me off, saying she’s got it under control.”

Sharon Johns from CNN nods sympathetically, her recorder already out. “That’s simply unacceptable.”

“It’s not just about me,” Kamala continues, her voice dripping with feigned concern. “You know, moments of crisis, if nothing else, should really be the moment that anyone who calls themselves a leader says they’re going to put politics aside and put the people first.”

Hallie Reed from MSNBC jumps in, her pen scribbling furiously. “Madam Vice President, do you think this could be part of a larger conspiracy to silence progressive voices in the wrestling world?”

Kamala pauses, relishing the moment. “Well, Hallie, I wouldn’t want to speculate, but… it is utterly irresponsible and it is selfish and it is about political gamesmanship.

The reporters lean in closer, their eyes wide with anticipation. Doug Miles from the Washington Post clears his throat. “What do you think should be done about this?”

Kamala straightens her jacket, a small smile playing at the corners of her mouth. “I think it’s time for a thorough investigation into PCW’s practices. The American people deserve transparency in their political wrestling entertainment.”

The reporters nod vigorously, scribbling down her every word.

PCW Pulp Fiction Vignettes The screen flickers to life, static crackling like a thousand tiny wrestlers grappling for dominance. Suddenly, it clears, revealing a scene of utter chaos.

Jim Frascantore’s usually perfectly coiffed hair whips wildly in the wind, making him look like a deranged weatherman as he shouts into his microphone. “We’re live from Florida, where—”

A lawn chair hurtles past, missing Jim’s head by mere inches. He ducks, eyes wide with a mix of terror and exhilaration. “This is what I live for,” he shouts over the roar of the hurricane winds, “the thrill of the storm, the unpredictability of nature… and ratings.”

Mike Baddass, not to be outdone, grabs the mic from his partner. “As you can see, Hurricane Milton is-” His words are cut short as a palm frond slaps him across the face, leaving him sputtering and spitting out leaves.

SFX-the screen goes static and crackling.

The feed abruptly cuts, transporting viewers from the fury of the hurricane to a fury inside a dimly lit room in Berkeley, California. Professor McCarthy, looking every bit the stereotype of an academic elite in his tweed jacket with elbow patches, stands before a group his Flock… The Green World Order, The Legion of Anti-Fascists aka LOAF, Codee Pink, and Emily S. List.  His voice drips with self-righteousness as he holds up a thick tome.

“Comrades,” McCarthy intones, his eyes gleaming with fanatical fervor, “we have a traitor in our midst. Ana Kasparian of The Young Turks has dared to think independently!”

The crowd gasps in horror, their faces a mix of shock and outrage. McCarthy continues, his voice rising to a crescendo, “There’s no room for free thought in our movement. We must purge the nonbeliever!”

The crowd begins to chant “Purge! Purge! Purge!”

SFX-the screen goes static and crackling.

The scene abruptly shifts to a furious Cenk Uygur… Kasparian’s co-host on The Young Turks, his face as red as a tomato about to burst. He glares directly into the camera, nostrils flaring, veins popping on his forehead.

“Listen up, you so-called progressives!” Cenk bellows, his voice dripping with contempt. “You want me to fire Ana for having a mind of her own? Well, here’s my response: No, *BLEEP* off!”

SFX-the screen goes static and crackling.

Suddenly, a pigtailed blur bursts into frame. It’s Gracie McAvay, Dawn’s 9-year-old daughter, her eyes sparkling with mischief as she faces the camera.

“How dare you, Howard Stern!” Gracie exclaims, her voice a perfect mix of mock outrage and childish glee. “I watched your interview with Kamala Harris. What happened to the shock jock we all knew and loved? When did you turn into such a *BLEEP*?”

“GRACIE!” Dawn’s voice rings out from off-camera, a mix of shock and exasperation.

Gracie’s eyes widen innocently, her pigtails bouncing as she turns her head. “I was going to say pussycat, Mom. And besides, that’s what Eva told me.”

A moment of tense silence follows, broken by Dawn’s voice, now tinged with a reluctant amusement. “EVA!”

As the camera pans away, Gracie leans in close, whispering with a conspiratorial grin, “Thanks for the history lesson, sis.”

Dawn’s Rebuttal The camera cuts back to Dawn McGill’s office, where the PCW owner is pacing furiously, her stilettos clicking against the hardwood floor. Her blonde hair whips around as she turns to face the camera, blue eyes blazing.

“Listen up, Kamala,” Dawn snarls, jabbing a perfectly manicured finger at the lens. “You want to talk about roles? Let’s talk about yours – or should I say, lack thereof.  For three and a half years, you’ve been riding Biden’s coattails as his glorified cheerleader. And in all that time, have you lifted a finger to help PCW when we could have used one?  No.  When we were taken off the air in 2021 and couldn’t get back on, where were you?”

Her eyes again turned to the framed Henhouse magazine cover on her wall, featuring herself in a provocative pose.

“I got the seed money to resurrect PCW from the ashes myself and worked with Elon Musk to get us back on the air.  I did the work.  I made it happen.  Not you.  Not the government.  I did.”

Dawn’s mind races. This isn’t just about tonight’s show anymore. It’s about preserving the integrity of PCW against political vultures.

“You want to accuse me of playing politics?” she continues, voice dripping with disdain. “Take a look in the mirror, sweetheart. You’re the one trying to weasel your way into my operation for a PR boost.”

She slams her hand on the desk, causing a framed photo of her with Elon Musk to rattle.

“For the record, yes, I was offered one of Trump’s ballrooms in one of his hotels to hold our Florida show in.  I declined.  I didn’t think it was appropriate and it didn’t feel right to me in the middle of a catastrophe.”

Dawn takes a deep breath, composing herself.

“I don’t have time for your games, Kamala. Unlike you, I’ve got real work to do. A show to produce. Wrestlers to manage. You know, actual responsibilities? So why don’t you toddle back to your cushy office and leave me alone?”

With a final glare, Dawn turns away from the camera, muttering under her breath.

“Ladies and gentlemen, it’s time for our main event! The 2024 showdown between Donald Trump and The Supreme Overlord of PCW Joe Biden!”

Trump strutted down the ramp in his signature navy suit and red tie, his golden hair gleaming under the spotlights. Across the ring, a hooded figure shuffled out, occasionally emitting crackling bolts of energy from beneath the dark robe.

“Oh my God, Johnny!” Colleen Crowder squealed. “This is going to be epic!”

Suave rolled his eyes. “Let’s see if he can actually find his opponent first, Colleen.”

As if on cue, Biden spun in a confused circle, his back to Trump. The referee gently turned him around, much to the crowd’s amusement.

Trump wasted no time, grabbing Biden in a snapmare and following up with a drop toe hold. The Supreme CEO of PCW hit the mat hard, but managed to fight back with a flurry of right hands and a clumsy shoulder tackle.

“Look at that fire from Biden!” Crowder gushed. “He’s not going down without a fight!”

Suave snorted. “I think that’s less ‘fire’ and more ‘flailing,’ Colleen.”

Trump sidestepped Biden’s charge, sending the robed figure careening into the corner. As Biden struggled to regain his bearings, Trump unleashed a series of vicious boots to his opponent’s midsection.

“The former PCW CEO is really taking it to Biden here,” Suave commented. “This could be over quick if-”

A stray bolt of energy suddenly shot from Biden’s eyes, incinerating a hot dog vendor in the front row.

“HOLY CRAP-” Suave’s exclamation was cut short by Crowder’s indignant squawk.

“That was clearly an accident! Biden’s just warming up!”

The match continued, a bizarre blend of traditional wrestling moves and unpredictable bursts of mystical energy. As Trump applied a straitjacket hold, Biden’s thoughts raced.

‘Come on, Joe,’ he told himself. ‘You’ve faced tougher opponents than this. Remember corn pop? He was a bad dude…’

With a surge of strength, Biden broke free, only to eat a wheelkick from Trump in the corner. The crowd went wild as the two political titans battled for supremacy in the most literal sense possible.

Trump’s relentless assault continued as he executed a step-up enziguri, followed by a running knee that left Biden reeling. The crowd held its breath as Trump went for the cover.

“One! Two!” Jake Tapper and Dana Bash counted in unison, but Biden managed to kick out at the last second.

Trump, undeterred, transitioned smoothly into an inside cradle, but again, Biden kicked out at two. Frustration etched across Trump’s face as he stood up, gesticulating wildly at the CNN referees.

“The count was fair and square!” Suave declared. “Trump can’t blame the media for this one!”

Crowder scoffed. “As if he’s ever needed a reason before.”

As Trump argued with the refs, Biden stumbled to his feet, his eyes glowing ominously. Another burst of energy shot forth, this time taking out a popcorn vendor and a merchandise salesman.

“Oh, come on!” Suave exclaimed. “At this rate, there won’t be any concessions left!”

In a move that shocked everyone, Trump suddenly produced a mirror from beneath the ring. As Biden turned, ready to unleash his eye beams, Trump held up the reflective surface. The energy bounced back, catching Biden’s robes on fire.

“That’s not legal!” Crowder shrieked. “Where’s the disqualification?”

As Biden flailed, his robes ablaze, Trump swiftly moved in. He extinguished the flames by rolling Biden up for a pinfall. The arena fell silent as Tapper and Bash’s hands hit the mat.

“One! Two! Three!”

The bell rang. Trump had won.

“I can’t believe it,” Crowder sputtered. “The CNN referees… they didn’t even try to help Biden!”

As the chaotic scene in the ring faded, the feed abruptly cut back to Dawn McGill’s office. The PCW owner, looking slightly frazzled but composed, addressed the camera directly.

“Well, folks, that was certainly… something,” Dawn said, running a hand through her blonde hair. “Next week, we’ve got the two number one contender’s matches for Extreme Election Night 2024.  We will see you then.”

I was going to title this REST STOPS AND EXITS but I suppose a more descriptive heading is LOGISTICS BETWEEN PARALLEL ROUTES.

This will be highly informed by the Florida Turnpike because, as far as I'm aware, toll roads are not held to a template the way public roads are. In particular, the Turnpike in South Florida runs right alongside I-95. To get from Miami to Orlando (or vice versa), do you want to take the Turnpike from start to terminus or go north on the interstate and then west on state road 50?

Money

A few years ago (and to a lesser degree today), some people were just too cheap to take a toll road under any circumstances. This led the Turnpike to be a fast and enjoyable experience for road-trippers.* In recent years, this is not necessarily true, as the Turnpike has two lanes to I-95's three and about the same number of people willing to drive each road.

But there are situations where the interstate can cost money as well. Express lanes are often offered in high traffic areas.

The left lane will be either cordoned off or physically diverge from the standard lanes. Watch out for the dynamic pricing that could have the same toll station costing either a dollar or ten dollars depending on the time of day. The schedule may be variable as well. Lanes during low-use periods may be closed and physically blocked off.** Pay attention to the ample signage that precedes these express lanes.

Anyway, how do you pay these tolls? These days, it's usually with a sticker transponder on your windshield. Toll roads often belong to a unique transponder system. Do not expect transponder compatibility to cross state lines.

Modern toll stations are little more than scaffolding over the road. Drivers can pass underneath at full speed. Transponders will be scanned, and a plate picture taken. Your transponder is registered to an account along with your credit card, vehicle description, and license plate information. If you find yourself passing through a toll station without the proper transponder, expect a bill at a slightly higher toll rate (and possibly a fine) mailed to the address associated with your vehicle registration.***

Older stations will have separate lanes where you can pay cash to an attendant, or a machine you can throw exact change into to raise the toll arm. Before scanners existed, it was vitally important to have exact change at the ready to feed the automated machine. This was considered a solemn duty of the shotgun rider. It's worth mentioning that cash tolls are being phased out and should not be counted on in high-population areas.

Toll plazas will be spaced out a number of miles along the route, but are also present at every entry and exit point. The nexus of I-75 and the northernmost end of the Turnpike will warn you repeatedly before you hit toll road. Sunpasses are sold in every rest plaza. You will need to set up an account on your phone in order to use it.

Side note: you will save money on gas by choosing a slower route. You'll also save money by not buying gas on the Turnpike, or near major intersections. As a trip tip, the deeper you are into absolute podunk, the cheaper everything gets.****

Rest/Service Plazas

Interstates have very simple, tax-funded rest stops. They essentially consist of bathroom facilities, vending machines, and an outdoor picnic area.

They're generally well-lit, clean, and safe places to stretch your legs after a long stint on the road. Long-haul truckers often use these pulloffs to catch some sleep. Interstate rest stops are on the right side of the road, like exits, and are only accessible in the direction you're traveling.

Turnpike service stations are rather more extravagant, and have names to differentiate them.

You can buy gas here instead of having to exit the route and find a town. There are several fast food options, Dippin' Dots vending machines, and usually a gift shop (again, this is the Florida Turnpike), in addition to the en suite gas station convenience store. These also are clean facilities to use, but they get a bit creepy after dark when the interior lights dim, shops close and only the bathrooms are open. You do not want to picnic outdoors here. Turnpike stops are on the left and are shared by both directions of traffic. Refueling is usually chaotic on holiday weekends.

Signage should tell you in advance how far away the next stop will be, and if you're entering an area that will have a long stretch of no exits at all. Use this information to plan your gas and bathroom stops. Be careful letting gas get too low on the interstate, or you may find yourself winding through some creepy, podunk forest hoping you can find a gas station (I hate you, I-10) or discovering that the town is four miles away from the exit (I hate you too, Mims, FL).

Traffic

If GPS is available, check it before and during each trip and listen to the damn thing when it tells you to route off due to a traffic accident.

I briefly touched on the importance of multiple lanes to your commute. A person driving slowly in the left lane of a two-lane road can destroy an otherwise-pleasant trip. But is it worth driving 40 miles on a 2-lane (that is, two lanes in one direction) road versus 20 miles on a 3-lane plus 20 on a one-lane? Population centers are key factors in this equation. A deserted straight stretch with only one-lane in each direction will afford you ample chance to get around slower traffic. A winding, sixty-year-old state road carrying the burden of 60 years of housing boom will be hellish.****

Rush hour can be a deal-breaker on certain routes. On interstates this can sometimes be mitigated by express lanes and bypasses that go around a city instead of through it. Orlando has a series of toll road bypasses that are probably the only reason inhabitants don't burn down the city. On interstates and toll roads, traffic is usually caused by accidents, heavily-used exits, or undesirable weather conditions. All other roads have to contend with traffic lights, and usually a lower speed limit when entering a town.*****

Speaking of Orlando, some roads are very, very dangerous. I-4 is one of the deadliest and busiest roads in the United States. It's also rumored to be haunted. Go figure. Driving in Miami is a unique and horrifying experience. Tampa is, I think, the state leader in wrong-way driving thanks to the way the interstate is laid out. The gist is that there are definitely times you want to take a bit of a longer trip to avoid getting involved. Also, heavily-wooded areas, especially winding ones and in the middle of the night are animal strikes waiting to happen. Avoid speeding through wilderness areas after dark.

If you're familiar with an area, you may know which spots are infamous speed traps (I-10 in Madison County) and where the cops will out-pace you every time (pretty much all of I-95 south of Martin County). This, and the average traffic flow, can be used to determine that a 50 mile detour might be quicker than the straight shot.

Road construction (and Florida roadways are constantly being resurfaced) can throttle any trip and may require evasive maneuvers.

Alternate Routes

State roads, county roads, and U.S. Routes are numbered roads that you may choose to bail out onto if the road gets rough. The numbers and shapes are significant.

U.S. Routes are indicated by a black-and-white shield and are contiguous between states. They pre-date the Interstate System. Like the interstate, numbers indicate roughly where in the country they're located and whether they primarily go east-west or north-south. This is your best bet (other than the interstate) if you don't know the roads.

State roads are indicated by a circle, and change at the state border, while county roads are indicated by a rectangle, and are confined within county lines. Sometimes these interact in frustrating ways.

But it gets worse!

Please enjoy SR-17 being east of the region's major conduit US-27 (that is partially also US-98), while US-17 is to the west (where it also joins up with US-98). It's actually a pretty good illustration of how the US routes spiderweb into each other, because even-numbered US-98 is an "east-west" road, but it has to go diagonally here.

If you do not have a GPS paper map: take my advice and stick to either the interstate or US routes where at least you know which direction you're heading and that you'll hit another one in the series eventually. I have had a GPS completely shit the bed on me, incorrectly pin my location, and give incorrect directions and it is not fun nor is it funky-fresh. Please know which general direction you are supposed to be heading and have a back-up plan

I've been following this story for a while because I find it both hilarious and awe-inspiring that, not only are immigrant workers finally taking a stand against violations of their rights as humans, but that DeSantis and Florida lawmakers are going to physically see the effects of violating the rights of American immigrants. This reminds me of the revolutions and the slow slide of tyranny that we talked about in class. There has definitely been a slow and visible slide of American politics into anti-immigration policy, and while it may not be major or widespread, this potential truck drivers strike is evidence of what Paine preached. @unlpols470

BLACKROCK, MT. EARLY MARCH 2011.

For a few years, the Sandoval house has stood empty. Mrs. Sandoval passed away in 2008, and no one managed to track down her son. He left town back in ‘03, a couple years after his father died in an accident, and since then, no one in town has seen hide nor hair of him – not even his pack.

And then, eight years after Dante Sandoval left his family and home behind, his widow shows up in town.

She’s young, too young; only 22. Dark-eyed and dark-haired and dark-minded. She smiles too much, and then she smiles too little. Is the kind of woman who shows up alone at the bar. The kind of woman who tells you to fuck off if she thinks you’re getting too close, too handsy, even if you don’t agree – and very few like that. She gets a job as a mountain guide, and then they don’t see much of her. The house she inherits is left behind like a carcass, just another unpleasant memory as summer stretches on. Then snow shuts down the mountain, and she returns, much to their disappointment. She’s remained a stranger ever since.

(Towns like Blackrock don’t like strangers. Towns like Blackrock don’t like women like Mar Sandoval.)

THE PAST, NOT AS DISTANT AS SHE’D LIKE.

Her parents tried, she thinks. Tried to love her, to love each other, but the bottle won out and the damage was done, their home broken into jagged pieces. Or maybe that’s just wishful thinking; maybe they were bickering tyrants from the start, and she just didn’t want it to be true. It didn’t matter where they moved, Texas to Louisiana to Florida – same shit, different scenery. She grew up amidst screaming matches and plates shattered against the wall. Under the constant pressure, Mar fractured, too. She sharpened her edges to survive. Came home with bloody knuckles, and left for school with fresh bruises. She learned the tenets of life from people who had no business teaching it to her: to use leverage, to find meaning in whatever meagre thing you could control, to find fear as natural as breathing. To read a room the moment you walk in. To always look three moves ahead. To take the blame. Even when everything in you was screaming that it wasn’t your fault. To hate yourself for both. That if you excused it all as love, it was okay.

At school, she could be the one giving out beatings, whether they were earned or not. It wasn’t that she always started the fights, though she did that too – but she’d finish them, schoolyard scraps turning into brawling matches when Mar got involved. She was never loud, but she was always angry, rage simmering beneath her skin, a buzzcut saw waiting for an accident, looking for release. A bruise was a bruise was a bruise; it didn’t matter if she left it herself, so long as she could control how it got there, whether through someone else’s fist or her own. Her mind stirred into a constant, exhausting frenzy by thoughts she didn’t have the words for, yet: if you love me, if you love each other, why is it like this?

She left home at 19, slamming the door behind her on her way out, and she never looked back. No plan, no route. She’d never been further north than Atlanta, so it seemed like a good place to start. Got a job as a waitress, saved up every little bit she could, before she left Georgia to continue her trek north. Turned 20 in Tennessee, still no plan in sight – and then, right as she was considering her options, she met Dante.

He wasn’t her first, but he was the first one that mattered. A couple years older, from a small town in Montana, with kind eyes and a nice smile and hands that were firm but gentle. He always had a sketchbook on him; studies of the mountain trail, birds and flowers. No sudden movements. Never raised his voice. He didn’t mind her sharp edges, but before she knew it, they’d been sanded down – still present, but softer than they’d ever been, and better for it. She fell faster than she should have. So did he.

They spent the next few years working as guides on the Appalachian Trail, getting their certificates, and along the way, they got married. Began to plan their future, with a whole life ahead of them that they would share. It was Dante that taught her to be patient, that taught her love had never been – should never be – about leverage, that fear was a cruel thing to cause in someone else. And maybe she was a work in progress, but hey, Mar, so am I.

In retrospect, they both had their secrets. He would tell her about Blackrock with a fondness in his voice, and she would curb her tongue – if you love it so much, why did you leave? She shared what she could with him. Let him reassure her when she faltered, when the things she’d buried came crawling to the surface, when it felt like all the love in the world couldn’t stop her from becoming a black hole that would tear itself apart. They made it work. They were happy. Hopeful.

And then Dante died. Disappeared, technically. But they found his body a week later. Gunshot wound, weapon nearby. Coroner ruled it a suicide, despite Mar’s protests; Dante wouldn’t leave me– there was nothing wrong– why would he–

The pieces they'd mended were broken, and she was left alone with the wreckage, sharp and heavy. Dante would never have done that to her. He wouldn’t have. Couldn’t have.

She traveled west in their beat-up car, his ashes and their hiking gear secured in the back. Got her stupid, grief-ridden kicks out of asking obnoxious truckers if her husband could watch, only to let them face the urn. Laughed until she cried when they ran from the ‘crazy bitch’. Came to Blackrock with no intention of staying, only to find herself the recipient of a rickety old house full of family pictures she had no context for, heirlooms and trinkets; memories that weren’t her own, that had nothing to do with her.

And, of course, the collection of sketchbooks depicting wolves. All different sorts, snouts and pelt colours and scars, signed D. Sandoval. The torn old henley at the bottom of a chest down in the basement. The shredded remains of an old journal, the scratch marks by the kitchen door.

BLACKROCK, MT. 2019.

Lonesome, but not lonely. It’s how she likes it, she’s decided. It’s easier, that way. She’s used to it. Isn’t sure if it’s always been her nature, or if it’s just a force of habit, but she hasn’t stopped to ask herself. Mar keeps company when she feels like it, when winter gets too quiet for her taste, and as soon as the snow’s thawed, she’s gone. Just another ghost, until winter calls her back to Blackrock. She knows what it looks like – she arrives, and so do all the other strange things that haunt the town. (But she’s the only strange thing that’s been spotted near the deputy, and she knows the optics of that, too.) She hasn’t done much to improve the wide-spread impression of her. She’s pleasant enough if you haven’t tested her patience, but she remains distant; keeps most everyone at an arm’s length. It’s easier to not get attached, to not get disappointed, that way. To settle for that long life of lonesome, but not lonely.

There are answers to be found in Blackrock, if only she can find the right questions. She’s sure of it. Someone has to know what happened – why he left, why he died, why someone would kill her husband. But until she can find those questions, she observes. She adds her own sketchbooks to the pile. She takes meticulous notes of all the odd, out-of-place things she sees. And she bides her time.

So Mar Sandoval remains a stranger. Drinks her cocoa with a dash of peppermint liqueur, brings a book to the bar, doesn’t give a shit about small town nosying disguised as small town kindness. Takes up odd jobs at nearby ski centres if the money’s tight, and by summer, she is gone. None of them truly know her. None of them ever will.

Redcedar / Teddy

I like to think that Teddy’s parents took care of Mar when she got to town, back in 2011 – maybe they took care of the Sandoval house, or knew the Sandovals?She liked them a good deal, felt grateful for their kindness and indebted to them for it, and with them gone, she sees Teddy as a young woman in a strange town that could maybe need some kindness, too. Mar’s just too awkward to fully commit to it, yet.

Basswood / Sam

It wasn’t necessarily the first reason, and it definitely isn’t the only reason, but a big part of her connection to Sam is that she hopes he could help her piece together the Dante puzzle. It’s not fair, she knows. It’s probably fucked up, asking him to help her figure out what happened to her dead husband, on account of.. whatever it is that they are. She tells herself that’s why she’s yet to really ask him for help with it. This thing between them was never meant to go this far, because now she likes Sam – and that makes her feel guilty, in more ways than one.

Blackthorn / Carson

She sees herself in Carson, sees the woman she used to be, the woman she’s done her best to bury – all fists and venom-veins, ready to set the world on fire. She doesn’t know the cause of Carson’s anger, doesn’t necessarily know Carson all that well in general, but like calls to like. Mar might be trying to reign herself in, these days, but she knows the anger she thinks she sees in Carson, the need for destruction. Pulling them out of that bar was an emotional impulse, one she doesn’t really want to acknowledge: she got cold feet right after. She’s got more on her own plate than she can handle; why did she try to take on someone else’s? That’s why she avoids them now. She has no intention of calling on whatever debt they think they owe her; in her eyes, it was almost selfish to not let nature run its course that night. Almost.

Oak / Diego & older wolves

Dante was 100% a werewolf, and I’d love to potentially plot out the older wolves of the Blackrock pack having known him, if you all are game! They wouldn’t know how much Mar knows about the pack, if she even knows anything, which I think could be a great source of ~drama – especially now that there’s a dead wolf. Diego in particular is someone I think could be cool for this, as he’d be the right age range and would have been there for long enough to have known Dante.

Ash / Romeo

Ash / Romeo is a new face, and Mar knows all-too-well what that’s like. I don’t think she’d be looking for any meaningful friendship, to start with, but I could see her potentially reaching out, just to see who they are, and maybe to let them know that there’s other out-of-towners around.

Sycamore / Eric

Much like herself, Eric doesn’t have a good reputation, though his is probably worse. He thought about the time when he and his mom left for the first time to Florida. He was in 8th grade at the time but didn't know what was going on. All he knew was that his dad moved out and he lived with his brother, along with his mom.

His mom took both of them to a shelter in town first until she made them leave and start heading to Florida.

Originally Virgil was from a small town in New Mexico called Farmington, and Florida was over a thousand miles away.

He remembered being scared when his mom and him hitchhiked to the edge of town. They caught a ride with a trucker at a gas station and that trucker was more than willing to take them to the city of Albuquerque.

Ever since then they had rode with truckers or stayed at truck stops for the night to sleep. He really missed having a warm bed along with fresh food. He was only 13 and he was already in hell.

During the time Virgil separated his emotions and became detached from reality. Anytime he thought about his family (his dad and brother) he'd immediately forget everything and just become detached.

Virgil even remembered that he also left his extended family and friends at the time. On the road with truckers all he could think of was his friends. How much he missed them. How much he wishes to belong somewhere again. He missed home...

Eventually they did stop at Oklahoma to try and possibly start there to at least get some money. They just couldn't stay in any shelters because every single shelter there were only for people who were addicted to something. It was stupid but he didn't care.

They did stay with a Mexican family who were more than willing to help them out and gave them the spare room. They were only supposed to stay there for a week...

But a week turned into two which eventually turned into three and four.

But you've also deprived me of a full nights rest, so no more dreams...

His mom got a job and saved $1,000. He though that was for them, but then he forgot about...him...

He forgot to mention that his mom was in "love" with a random stranger on the internet who was in the "military" and "needed" money.

At the time he didn't care that his mom carelessly gave away the $1000 to a total stranger who claims to love him. He just felt numb during the whole time and just went with his mom anywhere.

His mom and him did leave because they over stayed their welcome. What was most upsetting from this, was that it was Christmas Eve.

The Mexican family dropped them off at the edge of Oklahoma city and abandoned them. They were off again riding with truckers. They made it all the way to South Carolina where they got stuck at a truck stop on Christmas day.

Virgil didn't know what was devastating, the thought that his family celebrating Christmas without him, or that his Christmas is in a store with his mom sleeping on a bench next to him.

Virgil shook his thoughts again as he realized tears were steaming down his face. He never thought back to these memories because when he does he feels the emotions he didn't feel during then.

Perfect ending to a really tough journey. The pup and I being super lazy because we fucking deserve it. Most runs aren’t like this; the midwest is cheesecake, compared to Cali. Gah....take me back to fucking Chicago! Hell, I’d even venture back into NYC, as long as I didn’t have to come back to Cali for the next 8 weeks. California?...your high winds and your speed limit for truckers SUCK BALLS! 

Yeah...6 to 8 weeks at a time; I run back and forth along the highways; sometimes the runs are 4 days long...most are only 3 days long, which is cool, but fuck me, add a 4th day and the run becomes tedious. I enjoy doing what I do; I don’t have a manager on my back, in my face or up my ass. My truck is my home; stocked with everything that I need. A fridge, a microwave, a hotplate (in case I actually feel like cooking a meal), a closet to hold the necessary clothing that I like to wear, a drawer for socks and underwear, cabinet space for necessities (like jugs of water, canned goods, hair clippers and the pup’s food). 

Only a handful of people have asked if I get lonely out here; most times, no...I’d be lying if I said that I didn’t get lonely at all. Sometimes I do...which is probably why whomever reads my shit wants to pour bleach into their eyes. The times that I do?, all I have to do is think of anyone invading my space and fucking things up for me (because I willingly allow them to). The temptation to seek out companionship is averted; simply by way of absence. If I’m not available physically, it’s harder for me to commit to anyone...thus thwarting any of that temptation. 

The times that I’m not lonely?, well...that’s when I enjoy drawing up my tattoo designs, jamming out to my music, planning my next venture, etc... I have yet to decide which venture I’d like to pursue first; now that I have such freedom (and money) to do what I’ve always wanted to do, I’m having a tough time being decisive about it all. My heart and my mind are the worst weapons against me; I’m extremely indecisive, until I just end up saying “fuck it”, and leaping forward. Sometimes, this isn’t an admirable trait to display. When I say “fuck it”, whomever is witness needs to be ready to hold my (proverbial) beer, because shit is about to get weird/odd/out of ordinary. Who the fuck wants to be ordinary?...definitely not me. 

Life out here is odd. The sights that I see will never be justified in the camera’s eye. My camera can’t capture what my eyes see...it’s that or I just have a shitty camera on my phone/dash cam; which these two reasons, is probably the case. I’ve seen sunsets that’ll bring tears to your eyes. I’ve seen sunrises that make you happy to be alive. I’ve seen mountain ranges that are more majestic than anything a sun bathed beach could ever offer. I’ve seen galaxy lit nights; no light pollution to fade out the gazillion stars that litter the night sky. My camera could NEVER capture what my eyes have seen. 

I’ve also seen my share of dumb assed fuckery; drivers in cars that pull some extremely stupid shit. It’s as if they’re more in love with an abrupt ending, than I am. I would offer a PSA, but it would fall on blind eyes. 18 wheel monsters can’t stop on a dime; if one collides with a smaller vehicle, one may as well kiss their ass goodbye. Next stop....the city morgue; it’s not a pretty thought that I like to have race through my mind, just as I’m certain no one driver of a smaller vehicle wants to die such a tumultuous death. It’s always better to go peacefully or painlessly; no one wants to witness a mangled body on the asphalt. So, anyone reading this elongated post, should think twice about moving abruptly in front of an 80,000 pound monster. We carry loads that are damned heavy and when you mix weight with inertia, velocity and gravity (basic physics, kids)...the equation, in a collision, calculates to disaster, and not a beautiful one, either. 

For the most part, life out here is challenging...especially for females...but there’s no other career like it. Of all the “dangerous” jobs that I’ve had in my adult life, this one has been the most rewarding. This one has been the key and cure to my traveling soul. Since I was old enough to venture out on my own, I never really stayed in one place for long; Florida was a fucking tar pit that sucked me in and I couldn’t get free for a while, but when I finally did, it was a two fingered salute and a hearty “FUCK YOU, Florida!”. Other than that 23 year long rut, I always had a traveling soul. Yeah, people are all the same...most times, but when I stumble across a place where people are pretty cool, it makes my adventures amazing. I like amazing things.

“How much seed do I need?” It’s a simple question. And a common one, in the self-sufficiency and preparedness folds. It’s also a ridiculously simple answer.

It depends.

It depends on a lot of things. As with the perfect gun, the perfect dog, the perfect wedding dress, and even the perfect property size and location, it’s person specific.

There are about a dozen primary factors – all of which have subsets. You can pretty much apply that “it depends” and all those factors to the “how much land per person” question too. Deciding “how much” starts with weighing those factors, then crunching numbers and testing.

The first thing we have to do is determine our production goals. From there, we look at our yield averages – which is where “it depends” strikes hardest.

Then we check how hard something is to save seed from for a future yielding plant, and start dividing and multiplying.

It’s a huge topic, so it’s broken it into two parts. Here, we’ll run through the *ahem* short list of factors, and an example of how they intertwine to determine future-seed needs.

Variables in Yield

See, when we start talking about “it depends”, it really does – on area, season, and growing style. That goes for both annuals and perennials.

Eventually we have to give it a shot ourselves, usually with small scale testing, to develop our averages.

Then we start to actually determine how much starter seed we need to meet our pantry goals, with a +/-margin for bumper crops and bust seasons and our desired seed saving. From those totals and our test plots, we start factoring how much land we need under cultivation to meet our goals.

To determine production goals, let’s develop what we’re going to call (charitably, and without snorting here) the “short list” of variable factors.

Primary Factors

– Are we only after a veggie-fruit garden to augment stored staples, or are we trying for true self-sustainability (calories, oils, and all required nutrients)?

– How many calories do we need?

– Fats and oils for cooking?

– Protein needs?

– Are perennials contributing to calories or fats? (Oaks, elms, nut trees)

– Are livestock or wildlife part of our food plan? (Fats, proteins, calories)

– Do we need livestock feed? Wildlife habitat?

– Are we also feeding animal helpers and defenders? (Short-term or sustainably?)

– Is irrigation needed? Is it possible? Probable? Hand or mechanical/electrical?

– Are we aiming for seed collection (which requires us to plant enough extra to stock as seed plus backup seed again), or a one-off planting (which opens up region-tailored hybrids)?

– Do we want/need “bad year” backups? – Growing method? (Plays into yields)

– What are our growing season & zone(s)? (How much growing time you have affects how much land you need to have planted during that season.)

Additional Factors

There are other aspects that come into play once we have some of our method, climate, and goal answers. Some affect picking what we’ll grow, and some affect what we’ll need for our crops.

– Do we have slake water soaks planned for a corn-based diet? (Starving with a full belly = bad.)

– Do we know what OUR yields are, per general type (a bush green bean) or by specific variety (Channel Seeds VT TriplePro corn, versus Hancock’s “Trucker’s Favorite” white dent corn)?

– What are our past & locally common pest/disease problems?

– Previous land use?

– Planned preservation methods?

– Labor factors; in prep, harvest, and post-harvest phases? (Manual or mechanical, man hours, physicality)

– Focus on space efficiency?

– Got chill hours? (pro: apple yields; con: apple diseases and pests)

– Hoop-hothouse to extend seed-starting and planting seasons?

– Long-term sustainability, or expected short term? – Duration of short term: 12-18 months, 2-3 years, 5-10 years, etc.?

Uhm…Say What Now?

Some of the factors may be head scratchers, without immediately obvious reasons for how or why they’d affect our seed stockpile. Usually, there’s a long, complicated article’s worth of considerations for each.

For example, we ask, Why does the sustainability of a system matter?

Because over time, we’re repeatedly taking nutrients and biomass out of the growing space, and sticking them in our toilets or catholes. This removes them from the production system – even only for 6-18 months if we’re into humanure.

The same is true of pulling weeds and flinging them far, far away, or letting livestock munch them and later returning manure – which has nutrients, but does little for soil structure. Eventually, it takes a toll on the soil.

We’re also walking and-or driving around our plants (compacting soil), possibly removing helpers like firefly larvae (they hunt slugs), and we’re possibly growing the same groups year after year (inviting pests and disease to set up shop).

For some timescales, sustainability just doesn’t matter. For those with enough resources to just repeatedly convert crop areas to covers and-or low-pressure grazing in cycles, it gets partly to mostly mitigated. There are intensive growing methods and practices that eliminate some to all of the possible problems.

However, there are methods that exacerbate them.

It took a thousand years to turn the Fertile Crescent into a desert, and only about a hundred years to convert the Great Plains’ six-plus feet of topsoil to the Dust Bowl. We can see less-dramatic but still-serious soil changes in just a year or two, definitely inside 3-5.

Avoiding the negatives (creating sustainable production) affects our growing method choices. Our choices also depend on our capabilities – physical and mechanical. The different methods see differences in yield, and affect the type and need for cover crops, or to have differing seed bases for alternating years.

It all combines to determine the amount of seed and land we’d need for cultivation to avoid having predictable problems down the road.

Getting Help

Happily, we don’t all have to learn from scratch – although, unless you’re very light on the supermarket and skip the amendment and pest control portions of Tractor Supply, chances are prac-ap is going to be eye-opening.

Your local and regional Master Gardeners, county extensions and co-ops, and any permaculturists and sustainable ag growers in your area are going to be valuable resources.

Due to the limitations and capabilities in each region such as temperature and rainfall, the balance of crop types and varieties – and thus the seeding rate and-or yield – will vary significantly. People who are already doing it – successfully – can help with averages and predictions on those fronts.

Ask specifically about heirloom and OP, dryland-farming varieties, and disease resistance. Those are some of the areas where the biggest differences occur between “us” and Big Ag. (Remember that experienced organic farm yield versus Big Ag averages?)

We need to find a different expectation baseline, from people who grow the way we want to. That makes the internet an invaluable resource.

One, there’s a fabulous fallback: Your state’s old Victory Garden guides and farm reports.

Check the handout-guides, but also hit the cached newspapers. Many include canning rates based on the less-productive “then” crops and garden calculators, which can give us starting points for what our less-productive crops will potentially yield.

Two, we’re surrounded by growers, and the internet can help us find them.

Somewhere near us is a small market grower or a homestead blogger or forum user. A permaculture forum might also net somebody in the neighborhood.

Smaller YouPick farms are a good resource for varieties, pests, and controls. Some CSAs have programs for learning or apprenticeships, and some are open to conversations or hands-on tours even without them.

Should all else fail, you can also just keep those resources in mind (and on maps). These are people you might turn to for help later if you do have to expand before you have good established baselines.

Other Factors in Production

Way back when, there was a set of articles about seeds. They might be worth checking out again. It particularly applies here.

Other articles about planting style, sowing schemes, growing methods, and the use of perennials can help start detailing some of the variables involved with successful kitchen gardens and larger crop plots.

There are also TPJ articles about production for livestock. Some of the efficiency and site-planning articles introduce integrated, multi-function system concepts that affect yield-per-area. Articles with focuses on specific disasters can sometimes also be sources for garden materials and seed types that can affect our yields.

There are a ton of variables with growing. Even Big Ag does not have cut-and-paste yields across the board – which is why we see variables in region and state production, specialization by region, and still periodic crop failures.

We must get started if we expect to grow food at some point in the future. There are too many learning curves to leave those seed kit boxes and vaults on the shelf until a disaster. Knowing how much of what we need to plant – in a normal year – is only the tip of the iceberg.
