STUMBLING BLOCKS!
STUMBLING BLOCKS
Isaiah 57:13-15
Not all roads lead to God. There is a stumbling block that keeps man from reaching God: the stumbling block of sin.
In the Bible, the Greek word skándalon means a ‘trap-stick’ or a ‘stumbling block’ and is used figuratively to mean either something that causes people to sin, or something that causes them to lose their faith in Jesus and their way in life. A stumbling stone or tripwire is anything that makes someone trip and fall.
For something to qualify as scandalous, it must be evil or give the appearance of evil. To do a good act or an indifferent act, even knowing that it will inspire others to sin, can be a stumbling block as stated in Leviticus 19:14.
Yet so many are stumbling about out of confusion and lack of direction. But God has provided a map—the Bible—and a guide who knows the way and can give us directions—Jesus Christ. The world is littered with people and things that may and do cause us to stumble in life, detrimentally in the spiritual walk. Our text admonishes us to remove or go past every stumbling block in life.
The enemy knows the desires of our heart as much as God does and he uses it against us. He goads us into moving full steam ahead into situations that end up harmful, unhealthy, or just not the direction God has planned. Satan mimics God’s voice and signs so that we think we are hearing from the Lord, when in fact, the enemy is setting up a snare. He’s very clever like that.
When you feel like you are stumbling and at a roadblock, Psalm 25:4-5 is a good place to look to: “Show me the right path, O LORD; point out the road for me to follow. Lead me by your truth and teach me, for you are the God who saves me. All day long I put my hope in you.”
So many are right now stumbling over so many things in life: physical roadblocks, mental, emotional, material, and especially spiritual stumbling blocks. Some people have themselves become stumbling blocks to others against the instructions of 1 Corinthians 10:32-33: “So don’t be a stumbling block to anyone, whether they are Jews or Gentiles or Christians. That is the plan I follow, too. I try to please everyone in everything I do, not doing what I like or what is best for me but what is best for them, so that they may be saved.”
“Remove every stumbling block,” declares the Lord! Whatever will cause us to stumble in life must be dealt with swiftly and cleanly. When we determine to walk by the Spirit and not by the flesh, we will not stumble because of fleshy desires according to Galatians 5:16. These desires, having taken hold of one’s mind, heart, and life, will become a roadblock to healthy and victorious living while at the same time causing one to stumble in their spiritual race.
What has caused or is causing you to stumble in your walk with God? Whatever it is, it doesn’t really matter, as the Lord has given us instructions to help us navigate such roadblocks in Jeremiah 31:21: “Set up signs and mark the road; find again the way by which you left. Come back, people of Israel, come home to the towns you left.”
Yes, come back to the Lord, come back to faith, come back to the service of the Lord, those who have allowed the stumbling blocks of life to take them away from the path of righteousness. Why are we stumbling in the dark, groping to find a way out of the pit life’s put us in when the Lord, the great shepherd, is beckoning to us to follow the well-lit path according to Psalm 119:105?
Iniquities and sins create a barrier between God and his people, says Isaiah 59:2. Be sure to not allow stumbling blocks to stop you from being and doing all that the Lord has ordained for you.
PRAYER: Oh, Lord, help me not to be a stumbling block or allow anyone or anything to cause me to stumble in life. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Shalom

answering witchy questions
(from @theclosetedwitch)
1. What type of witch are you? - i hate the whole trendy “witch types” thing, but i work with both high and low magick and i work with the Fair Folk and deities and a lot of herbalism.
2. Do you believe it is wrong to hex? - very little is inherently wrong or right. you need context to decide if it’s moral or not. i don’t do hexes for no reason and i don’t initiate conflict, however if someone has fucked with my friends at all or tried to magickly harm me, you bet your ass that i’m gonna return-to-sender that bitch at the very least. TL;DR i believe in revenge as long as it’s proportionate :)
3. Have you ever hexed anyone? - depends on what you consider a hex. i’ve certainly cast return to sender spells and tripwire spells, but i’ve never done baneful work to someone without them doing something to me first.
4. Which deities do you worship, if any? - i’m a devotee of Aphrodite, and i follow Rhiannon and Morpheus as well. i used to follow Apollo also but the time in my life that he was present for has ended. i work with a few other deities very casually on and off, but those three are the ones i’m worshipping right now.
5. What got you into witchcraft? - the pastor at a church i had to go to was doing a slideshow on “bad religions” and he pointed to a pentacle and said “this is a pentagram, a symbol used by wiccans. and you know what the call themselves? witches. and wizards. or warlocks, actually. witches and warlocks.” obviously, he didn’t know much about wicca or witchcraft but the sheer fact that there were people calling themselves “witches” was enough to pique my interest and i started my research.
basically a christian pastor turned me pagan.
6. What is your favorite moon phase? - i love any time when i can see the moon, but i’m connected to the waning moon for Rhiannon, and the full moon because, idk, it’s pretty? i’m a dyke? unknown.
7.What is your favorite season? - beltane or samhain season
8.Which pagan celebration do you like most? - beltane for me is super happy and rich and beautiful, samhain is the time of year when i’m most connected to my craft, and imbolc season sucks ass but the rituals are really nice.
9.Are you in the broom closet? - to my family, somewhat. i talk about astrology to fuck with them because they’re christians, but i don’t talk about witchcraft or paganism because i’d surely get kicked out or at least punished super heavily.
10. What is your favorite herb to work with? - i’m gonna interpret this as favourite herb/spice, so nutmeg, cloves, juniper berries and chamomile
11. What are your favorite crystals, and why? - to be honest, most crystals i just use for the colour correspondances. i’m not super connected to most crystals but i do love black tourmaline for protection, and then i have some specific crystals that have a lot of meaning for me, like an amethyst point i got from a coven sister for my first imbolc, or a half of a geode that i share with my best friend, or my obsidian worrystone that shows up when i need it.
12. Have you ever had a spell backfire? - i’ve had spells not work, but outright backfire i don’t think so.
13. Do you work skyclad? - no, because of *body image issues* and also i’m cold all the time
14. Are you in a coven? - yes! it’s pretty casual and informal, and there’s not hp/ hps so it’s more of a working group, but coven sounds way better. our coven blog is @circleofpyxis and our instagram is circleofpyxiscoven
15. Do you believe in good and evil? - in individuals, yes. i know that there are inherently evil people. i don’t think that there are any inherently good people, and i think we’re all born neutral, but our actions define where we lie as far as morality.
16.What is the most successful spell you have ever performed? - either a very stupid surface-y spell to get a part i wanted in a play, or a spell to get rid of unwanted romantic feelings.
17. Do you do any divination? - yes!
18. If you do do divination, what kind? - i read futhark runes, dabble in tarot, and scry using fire or water
19. Do you read tarot? - a little
20. If you do, what is your favorite card? - i can’t remember them all off the top of my head but i love the hierophant in my deck
21. Have you ever had any dreams that came true? - i don’t have prophetic dreams, but i have a different sort of brand of metaphysical dream. i’m not sure how to describe it, but i think it’s my spirit guide just watching out for me. for example, i once needed to wake up at 6:30 but forgot to set an alarm, and i had this experience-- it must’ve been a dream-- but it felt like i was awake but my eyes were still closed, and then i heard my mom’s voice saying “it’s time to wake up, you have to go to your meeting” and i opened my eyes (in the dream) and saw my mom. then i woke up for real and no one was there, but the clock read 6:30 exactly.
another time i had a dream where my dad told me that distrokid had updated and i could see how much money i’d made, and then i woke up and distrokid really had updated, which only happens every month at most.
22. Are you in a religion? - i’m still trying to figure out exactly my denomination, but i’m a pagan of celtic and hellenic traditions.
23. Which do you like better: new moon or full moon? - i adore all of the new moon goddesses but i’m sorry, the full moon has my heart.
24. What was the first spell you have ever performed? - it was this really little simple spell for happiness. it was really just an incantation actually, i didn’t use any tools or anything, but it worked so i’m not complaining.
25.Do you believe it is wrong to cast love spells? - if you don’t have the consent of the other individual(s) then yes. otherwise, if you’re just attracting “a good match” or self-love, there’s nothing wrong with that.
26.Have you ever cast a love spell? - self love spells and romance-banishing spells yes.
27. What is your favorite magickal tool? - my peach wood wand that i made myself!
28. Do you like to work during the witching hour (3am ) ? - i do 90% of my workings at midnight or later, so yeah :)
29. Are you a hereditary witch? - nope, it’s just me and my suspiciously-invested-in-crystals-and-astrology sister ;)
30.Do you believe it is possible to be born witch? - you can be born into a family of witches but it’s not like some people are born witches and no one else can practice. everyone has magick, everyone has power. some people have different intuitive strengths, but everyone has strengths.
31. Do you believe initiation is essential to be a witch? - no. in some religious traditions you need to be initiated (like wicca), but witchcraft is for everyone.
32. Do you have a familiar? - no
33.What is your spirit animal? - i’m not indigenous so i don’t have one.
34. Which deity or god are you closest to? - my patroness is Aphrodite
35. Thoughts on reincarnation? - i believe in reincarnation but i also want to die and have it be over so it’s complicated jdfhjhfd
36. Current altar setup? - my mabon altar is still up since it’s still technically mabon season but i’m putting up my samhain altar tonight. i also have shrines to Aphrodite and Morpheus on my altar year-round.
37. Feelings and thoughts on Wicca? - i don’t practice, and there are a lot of issues with gardner, but there are issues with people in every religion. i don’t see a problem with wicca or wiccans, it just isn’t my religion.
38. What is your favorite element to work with? - water
39. Do you have a book of shadows? - i have both a BoS and a grimoire
40. Have you ever tried reading runes? - yes! that’s my best method of divination.
41. If so, what is your favorite rune, and why? - THIS IS SO HARD! i have a few. eiwaz, peorth, and ehwaz are some of my faves.
42. Do you believe in casting circles before every spell? - no, i do it for my rituals and sabbat workings, but at least for my practice, with the frequency that i do workings, i simply don’t have time to cast before spells.
43. If so, how do you cast your circles? - i might do a post on this later, but i close/ cast the circle deosil and then open it at the end of a ritual widdershins.
44. Ever tried knot magick? - yes! i use knot magick for a protection anklet i always wear.
45. Have you ever participated in, or watched the Great Rite (ritual sex)? - no. i’m underage and not interested in sex magick anyway.
46. What is your favorite color to work with, in magick? - red and black
46. Which deities do you have altars for? - Aphrodite and Rhiannon.
47. What is your favorite setting which you prefer to practice in? - i only do rituals after dark and i like practicing solitary but i also love practicing with my friends/ covenmates.
48. Do you know how to read palms? - no
49. If so, have you ever read palms, either yourself or others? - no
50. Are you more connected with the masculine, or the feminine? - feminine, but i try to work with a balance
51. Favorite day of the week to practice in? do you even care? - friday but not for any metaphysical reason, just because i’m least stressed then and have the most time.
52. How long have you been practicing? - over two years
53. Which witchy traditions do you observe? - i celebrate the wheel of the year sabbats, and the esbats, and Rhiannon’s day on march 1st
54. Favorite planet to work with? - Venus
55. Favorite direction ( est, west, north, south) to work with? - west
56. Favorite number to work with * numerology *? - 64 and 11
57. Do you have a magick wand, and if so, what is it made of? - yes, it’s made from peach wood.
58. Do you prefer the sun or the moon? - moon
59. Pointy hat or no pointy hat? - absoLUTELY pointy hat
60. What is it that you LOVE about witchcraft - i love my deities and i love how comforting my craft is when i feel alone

Blurred Lines: Cursed Past Chapter 59 - Jagomir
hey hey hey am back ready to write more BL moving back over to Zash and Terri
Zash and Terri land on Jagomir and search for the first ingredient
Terri looked at the list Mother Ysum had given then and narrowed her eyes
“Dream Shimmer bile” she said out loud she had no idea what that meant, was it from like a plant? or animal? She assumed it had to be from something natural to be used in the ritual, still ‘Dream Shimmer’ she hadn’t the foggiest idea what that meant. Terri opened up the holonet and did a quick search for the creature, initially she found nothing until she found a selection of old folk tales. It spoke of an animal called the Dream Shimmer that had the power to induce your worse nightmares through some ancient magic, Terri shivered at the idea of her worse nightmares coming to life. It was tall, quadrupedal had spines on it’s back that could be oh so many things, Terri groaned she wasn’t going to get any closer with this. She looked out the viewport at the dense swamp they had landed in, getting the ship landed in a stable position was enough of a challenge she could only imagine what it would be like once they were on foot.
Terri sat and waited for Zash to return unsure of why she had gone she’d just disappeared saying she had to ‘meditate’ whatever that meant, Terri did wonder what she was doing when she was meditating she imagined channeling some emotion or something. Terri frowned she wondered what Zash’s worse nightmares could be she could only imagine they were terrifying, Terri hoped they wouldn’t have to face that looking down the list none of these sounded very safe no wonder Ysum couldn’t do it on her own. Terri was still worried about Ysum, since the encounter she’d been researching nightsisters and they certainly didn’t seem like the good guys. All she could really find were legends rather than facts but from what she could find it seemed like Zash should be wary trusting them.
Terri waited for a few more minutes before Zash returned to the room with a wide smile on her face “sorry about that Terri all sorted now” she picked up the list wasting no time to chat “so what’s first on this list? Dream Shimmer huh well that doesn’t exactly sound docile” Terri nodded bringing up the folk tale it seemed dangerous and scary if anything
Terri grimaced “nothing concrete I’m afraid just some old folk tale that says they ‘induce your worse nightmares through some ancient magic’” Zash nodded looking at the tale
Zash sighed “lovely, well I guess we may have to talk to some locals, if this exaggerated description of the beast is inaccurate” Terri had to admit it was written like something out of a storybook claws as sharp as can be, piercing eyes all that crap.
Zash beckoned for Terri to follow her as they made their way outside and Terri was immediately hit with the humid smell of the swamp around her, she cringed a little from the barrage of feelings attacking her senses she was not looking forwards to today. Terri took a deep breath doing her best to ignore the heat and the smell, around her she could see low hanging trees covered in mossy dark green leaves and large lakes of brown gloopy liquid wasn’t exactly a nice vacation spot.
Zash chuckled “I can’t imagine why anyone would call this place home” she began walking into the swamp seemingly undeterred by the conditions, Terri did her best to follow her feet squelching through the thick mud as she walked. Terri hoped Zash would be able to sense the creatures they were looking for otherwise this was going to be a long day
A few hours later and Terri was exhausted they had been walking through the swamp trying to find these ‘dream shimmers’ but seemingly to no avail, Zash said she had been able to sense them or maybe somethings presence nearby but Terri was starting to not buy it.
Terri hung her head “how much longer do you think we’ll be walking Zash” all her bones ached she just wanted to go back to bed
Zash let out a long exasperated sigh “we’re close Terri I sense this habitat has the right potential for such a creature” Terri wasn’t convinced she’d said the same thing like an hour ago
Terri groaned “are you sure they’re force creatures they cou-” before she could finish Zash interrupted
“I am sure!” Zash snapped turning around a tense glower on her face, Terri jumped back in alarm
she held her neck awkwardly “sorry Zash I’m uh just tired” Zash’s glower quickly softened back to her normal look
Zash looked away “yeah me too, sorry I snapped at you Terri I guess I’m just a little tense having to be Ysum’s errand sith” Terri nodded she guessed she understood that “It’s not exactly the grand return I wanted” Terri nodded she’d help her get there though right?
Terri felt like she should ask “Zash? do you trust Ysum?” Terri had been pondering the question a lot
Zash chuckled “no not in the slightest” Terri frowned “Terri as a former sith lord I know not to trust anyone below or above me” Terri guessed that made sense they had a reputation
Terri was still confused though “so why are we working for her?” Zash smiled raising her eyebrow
“well we’re going to outsmart her Terri” Terri’s eyes widened “Ysum said only nightsisters can learn to control the spirit ichor but I don’t believe that for a second she doesn’t want us to learn it. Even so all we need to do is find a way to cancel out her magick and then take the results of the ritual” Terri frowned that felt kinda dishonest
“that’s kinda mean Zash are we sure that’s necessary?” Zash gave Terri a sympathetic smile
Zash walked over to her putting a hand on her shoulder “Oh Terri you really are naive aren’t you trust me she will try and do the exact same to us, she has not intention of giving us the rewards of the ritual” Terri frowned she wasn’t that naive but she had to admit that added up
Zash turned to continue walking but Terri was still worried “uh Zash?” Zash turned around “you said you don’t trust anyone above or below you? does that mean you don’t trust me?” Zash sighed giving Terri another sympathetic look
Zash took a second “well a little but trust me that’s not your fault I just have to watch my back, Terri my apprentice betrayed me and trapped me in a mind prison I’m a little justified” Terri guessed that made sense
Terri pouted “I dunno I guess I just thought I was different” Zash nodded Terri was worried was she really just another apprentice type to Zash
Zash sighed “Trust me I hope you’re different too I want to trust you but for that to happen I need you to completely trust me and do what I say ok” Terri nodded not saying anything “thank you Terri I really think we’re going to do great things together, for us and for Lusari” Terri nodded she guessed she should trust Zash it just hurt a little to know she didn’t trust her as much as Terri trusted her. Still could she really blame her after what the commander had done to her she guessed that was just the sith way, well not her she was going to be different she was going to be better.
They continued walking for a while before Zash stopped Terri “don’t take another step there’s a trip wire here” Zash pointed to a tripwire concealed in the mud. Terri took a sigh of relief she nearly walked right into it, Zash took out a small virboblade cutting the wire.
Terri smiled “phew that was close, do you think there are some nightsister colonies around that set that up” Zash nodded smiling
She walked through the now disarmed trap “Very good Terri it seems likely but now with their mediocre trap disabled we’ll be abl-” before she could finish a net pulled her into the air,
Terri had to stifle a laugh as she came over to help, Zash glowered at her from inside the trap unable to mover her arms. Terri made her way round to find where to cut the trap “I’m sorry it’s just you kinda had it com-” before she could finish she felt herself now hoisted up into a separate net
Zash let out a long sigh “fantastic, fine I’ll just get myself out” Zash began trying to reach her saber with the force but as she did Terri saw a group of figures appear from the swamp behind her
Terri stammered “uh Zash um lo-” Zash cut her off before she could finish
Zash glared at her “Terri please let me concentrate” Terri didn’t know what to do she wouldn’t let her tell her.
the figures came closer “but Zash” now in the light Terri could see they were Rattataki in brown robes they seemed to be holding blowpipes, Zash had now lift her saber into the air she may have a chance “behind you!!!”
Zash turned but it was too later Terri suddenly felt a small prick hit her neck and she became suddenly very sleepy, Terri could see as Zash’s saber dropped to the floor just before her vision faded to black...

Lost Bots 59: Raider Apeface, Espionage - Commando
Note: When I deck build; I don’t look at any online deck lists. Any similarities to other listed decks are completely coincidental. That said; if someone else has built the same deck beforehand, I will credit them by saying that this deck matches _’s deck.
In these articles I’m going to build a deck for a Transformer who seems interesting; but you don’t ever seem to see. Today’s is Raider Apeface, Espionage - Commando.
A Triple-changer who doesn’t want to flip very often. He has Focus 1 in plane mode while he has no damage on him. He has Bold 2 in Beast mode while he has 1 to 9 damage counters (so for most of the game then). Finally, he has Tough 3 in bot mode while he has 10 or more damage on him (to help him survive a little bit longer when he’s on low health). It makes you wonder how to build to take advantage of that mix of abilities he’s got. On to the deck for him!
Deck Name: Jungle Rhythm
Bots:
Raider Apeface, Espionage - Commando
Skullsmasher, Swamp Warrior
Grax (head for Skullsmasher)
Deck (40):
Anticipation Engine x3
Backfire x2
Brainstorm x3
Disarm x3
EMP Wave x1
Frag Toss x3
Handheld Blaster x3
Heavy-Handed x3
Point Position x2
RR Disruptor Blade x2
Scouting Mission x2
Security Checkpoint x3
Smoke Cloak x2
Steady Shot x3
Terrifying Resilience x3
Tripwire x2
Click the deck name to view the deck at fortressmaximus.io. I went with Skullsmasher as his teamie; who likes to bite Autobots or hurt enemies with fewer stars than him (and he’s 14 stars here). The Bold 2 that Apeface gains for most of the game benefits from all of the black pips in here; allowing him to do guaranteed damage. Since his stats are the same in all 3 modes; you just need to watch his damage. Helpful then that Skullsmasher doesn’t need to flip all that often either. He can just sit in body mode (until right before that Galactic Commander Optimus swings in) and do damage to all the smaller enemies. Feel free to try the deck out!

50 through 59 for the lore questions?
50. Who kills the spiders?
Rucuine, Mint or Venyra, probably.
51. Who eats all the food?
Lookin at you, Ares.
52. Do you have any tricksters or prank loving dragons? Do they cause mischief?
Azarah’s pretty good about pranks. He’s not stupid enough to try it on Mint, but he’s the epitome of that janitor who ignores the Big Battle behind him, being a main castle guard, but joke’s on everyone, he engineered that battle from the start. Or explosions by the result of his pranks, as it might be.
53. Most intimidating dragon?
Lilu. Even Mint knows better than to anger him. There’s the watertouched vampire king, then there’s Lilu, and most dragons don’t want to know what Lilu could do when his temper’s been unleashed.
54. Most friendly dragon?
Plenty of Lunarity’s inhabitants could go for this, but Airi takes the cake. Nothing better than rolling around and being Shiny towards everyone.
55. Dragon most likely to bring back a stick from gathering?
Murmur. She’s trying, she’s just not very good at it.
56. Laziest dragon?
Constellus Junior, mainly because he doesn’t really have to go anywhere to do his job. People have to come to him. It’s nice until he has to go get dinner on the other side of the castle and down two floors.
57. Funniest dragon?
Martinus! For being a watertouched vampire he’s a literal ray of sunshine. Always being nice and cracking innocent jokes and pranks and the like.
58. Do you have any sub-clans? What are they called?
Technically I have four clans- Lunarity, the Temple of the Sharded, the Changeling Clan, and the Clanless which is really just Faolan, Sornas, and the sciencers.
59. Does your clan decorate the lair at all? How so?
Within Lunarity, it’s usually left up to the squires to decorate the main parts of the castle, and everyone gets to decorate the parts they’ve laid claim to. For example, Mint has decorated her end of the basements with traps and tripwire and bones. Rucuine, at the end of his labyrinth, has gone directly into the ‘mad scientist’ trope and lovingly collects jars of preserved fake eyes and brains because he thinks he’s funny and it’ll get others to leave him alone.
What a loser.
Lunarity proper is usually decorated with very bright cyan star-shaped lanterns that only sometimes don’t float around. Banners with the clan’s symbol are pinned and candles in a deep blue sometimes just float around a foot above most dragons. The carpet in most areas is dark blue, embroidered with navy; and glass pipes of water (lightly sprinkled with glowing, magical glitter) often flow in the not-main corridors where there usually isn’t any lanterns.
It’d be like a vampire’s place if the vampire was underwater. Wait. The resident vampire is a water vampire of sorts. You get the idea.

The suspected Austin bomber is dead after terrorizing Texas’ capital city for three weeks.More >>
By EMILY SCHMALL Associated Press
PFLUGERVILLE, Texas (AP) – Investigators on Thursday finished questioning the second roommate of the man they say spent weeks planting bombs around Texas’ capital before using one of his own devices to blow himself up, but a more complete picture of the 23-year-old community college dropout remains elusive.
Police said they’d released the second of two people who shared a home in Pflugerville, just north of Austin, with serial bombing suspect Mark Conditt. The other roommate was taken into custody Wednesday and released hours later. Investigators haven’t named them, saying they weren’t under arrest.
Conditt made a 25-minute cellphone recording before his death. It was recovered Wednesday, after he detonated one of his own bombs along the side of Interstate 35 just outside of Austin as a SWAT team moved in.
But investigators say the recording provides few clues as to Conditt’s motives – and they’ve refused to release it publicly, citing the ongoing investigation.
Conditt built bombs planted in different parts of the city that killed two people and severely wounded four others over three weeks starting on March 2. He began by placing explosives in packages left overnight on doorsteps, then rigged an explosive to a tripwire along a public trail. Finally, he sent two parcels with bombs via FedEx.
All of the early victims were black or Hispanic, though the tripwire bomb injured two white men.
As fear grew, Conditt eventually was tracked down through store surveillance video, cellphone signals and witness accounts of a customer shipping FedEx packages in a disguise that included a blond wig and gloves.
Police found him early Wednesday at a hotel. And when his car moved, they followed and forced him off the road, setting up the confrontation that ended in an explosion.
Austin Mayor Steve Adler praised police officers for stopping Conditt’s sport utility vehicle before he could get onto the highway, even though they were aware he likely had explosive devices inside and they did not have as much backup as planned.
“We hear about folks who run into danger to keep us safe and we had one of those moments in very graphic and specific detail,” Adler said at a news conference Thursday.
NAACP Austin President Nelson Linder said the manhunt’s end was a relief but that the public needs answers on what motivated Conditt, including whether the first two victims were targeted because they are from prominent black families.
“I don’t think it’s random at this point,” Linder said. “We’re going to withhold our judgment and keep searching for information and why he killed those people.”
Investigators have released few details about Conditt, who was unemployed, home-schooled and attended Austin Community College until 2012 but didn’t graduate.
The Austin American-Statesman reported Thursday that a bomb Conditt made and shipped via FedEx had been addressed to an employee at a downtown Austin spa. It was intercepted at a processing center without exploding.
Anita Ward works at Austin Med Spa and says that police and federal agents told her that her daughter, who also works there, was meant to be the recipient of the unexploded package.
Ward declined to name her daughter, who she said doesn’t know Conditt. Police haven’t commented.

Tripwire Survey: 72 Percent of Security Professionals Say Soft Skills Need Has Increased
Tripwire, Inc., a leading global provider of security and compliance solutions for enterprises and industrial organizations, today announced the results of a survey conducted by Dimensional Research that looked at the need for soft skills in cybersecurity. The survey was conducted in July, and its respondents included 315 IT security professionals at companies with over 100 employees.
According to Tripwire’s survey, 100 percent of respondents believe soft skills are important when hiring for their security teams. The three most important soft skills cited were analytical thinker (selected by 65 percent), good communicator (60 percent) and troubleshooter (59 percent). Tied for fourth place, “strong integrity and ethical behaviour” and “ability to work under pressure” were selected by 58 percent of participants.
“The cybersecurity industry should not overlook the soft skills that are needed to build a strong security program,” said Tim Erlin, vice president of product management and strategy at Tripwire. “The reality is that today’s security pros need to go beyond technical expertise. Security practitioners need to be good communicators who can connect cybersecurity issues to business priorities, rally the rest of the organization to get involved, solve tough problems and handle sensitive issues with integrity.”
Respondents were also asked if the need for soft skills has changed over the last two years, with the following results:
Seventy-two percent said the need had increased.
Twenty-one percent said soft skills are actually more important than technical skills when hiring staff.
Seventeen percent expect to hire people without security-specific expertise over the next two years.
In addition, nearly all respondents (98 percent) believe non-security functions need to be more involved in cybersecurity in the future. Of those, 74 percent said IT operations needs to be more involved, 60 percent said risk management, 53 percent said compliance and 45 percent said legal needs to be brought into the fold. Other mentions included human resources (32 percent) and marketing (11 percent).
Erlin added: “With security-related regulations like GDPR on the rise, it’s unsurprising that respondents expect their legal and compliance teams to get more involved in cybersecurity. It’s become increasingly apparent that security is a shared responsibility, even for those without any technical cybersecurity experience. Employees from other functions can partner with their security teams to help them look at issues from different perspectives, help further the broader organization’s understanding of cybersecurity, and help enforce best security practices across the organization.”

LONDON, April 11, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- In its latest report that investigates the role of automation in cybersecurity settings, ABI Research finds that there are seven vital automated IT security applications that will function as the stepping stones necessary to advance cybersecurity in the new world of artificial intelligence. The automated processes will aid critical IT security functions that range from assisting security personnel to streamlining security alerts to system optimization.
"While it will most likely be a valuable addition to IT teams' arsenals, automation can be a double-edged sword if not handled properly," says Dimitrios Pavlakis, Industry Analyst at ABI Research. "We expect automated processes to first address key issues like TLS/SSL, or Transport Layer Security/Secure Socket Layer, certification and privilege management prior to tackling critical functions like incident response."
As security analysts, network engineers, and IT personnel face increasingly tougher challenges due to the proliferation and magnitude of modern cyber threats, automation will become key with ABI Research anticipating it to reach critical mass within the next four years. Big data, business intelligence, and data analytics platforms are forecast to top $54 billion by 2021 with network security and incident response predicted to climb to $59 billion by the same year.
Innovative vendors working toward full automation in cybersecurity settings include security information and event management (SIEM) vendors IBM, HP, McAfee, LogRhythm, and Splunk; innovative cybersecurity vendors Ayehu, Hexadite, Symantec, and Tripwire; as well as machine learning and user and entity behavioral analytics (UEBA) vendors Gurucul, Trudera, and Vectra Networks.
These findings are from ABI Research's The Role of Automation in Cybersecurity (http://ift.tt/2nXUoWY) report.

Only 17 Percent of Security Professionals Confident in US Government’s Cybersecurity Posture
A new survey of more than 200 security professionals attending RSA Conference 2017 has been released by Tripwire. Conducted at Tripwire’s booth, the survey gauged respondents’ concerns for their own organizations and found there are rising concerns for cybersecurity in general.
When asked if they were confident in the U.S. government’s ability to protect itself from cyber-attacks in 2017, only 17 percent of respondents said ‘yes.’ In addition, 80 percent of respondents said they were more concerned about cybersecurity this year than in 2016.
Cybersecurity issues plagued the US presidential elections at the end of last year, with reports on the DNC being hacked and various government officials raising concerns about their own cybersecurity practices. Nation-state hacking has also risen to the top of the agenda, with a call for a ‘Digital Geneva Convention’ to tackle the problem.
“People and organizations alike look to the government to set an example and lead the way on all sorts of issues, including cybersecurity. What the results of this survey show is that seasoned cybersecurity professionals are not confident in the government’s current cybersecurity strategy, and these worries can trickle down to the list of concerns for an enterprise,” said David Meltzer, chief technology officer at Tripwire. “While organizations look for their fears to be resolved over the next year, they will also need to increasingly work with security vendors to be reassured that they are taking the right security approach.”
Revealing their top concerns for their own organizations, 60 percent of respondents said they were confident in their own organizations’ abilities to enforce foundational security controls. When asked “what would you be most concerned about if your organization lacked a robust security program,” they said intellectual property theft (59 percent), followed by brand reputation (54 percent) and financial loss (53 percent). Nearly half (48 percent) of respondents said the lack of skilled people would most likely be the cause of security failures at their organizations, followed by inadequate processes (30 percent).
Meltzer continued: “With high profile data breaches hitting companies’ bottom lines, it’s no surprise that financial loss is high up on the list of security professionals’ concerns. It’s encouraging to see that people recognize that bad security affects a company’s brand reputation, as it means people care more about their security,” Meltzer added. “However, the looming skills shortage that’s already been identified as a pain point is worrisome. Companies need to look for technology that can increase automation in security and reduce the manual effort required of their employees.”
