Hop Trefoil Clover
Trifolium campestre
This species of trifolium is not native to the United States, its native range is in Europe and Western Asia, but it has now been introduced in some areas of the US due to being grown for fodder and escaping. However, it's not yet listed as an invasive species here.

Smiling Irish Eyes
It’s St. Patrick’s Day, and Irish Eyes are smiling. St. Patrick’s Day is more than a day for green clothing, green beer, shamrocks, leprechauns, and pots of gold, although I wouldn’t mind having my own pot of gold right about now. This is a day to celebrate and learn about Irish culture, traditions, and history. By participating in the many celebrations and parades and enjoying the food, drinks, music, and dancing that define Irish culture, St. Patrick’s Day can be a day of fun and learning. As I kickoff the St. Patrick’s Day festivities, I thought it would be a good idea to share some of my favorite wildflowers that are native to Ireland.

White clover (Trifolium repens) and hop clover (Trifolium campestre). Most of the modern research on medicinal properties of clover has focused on red clover (Trifolium pratense). But as you will notice, all three are closely related plants belonging to the genus Trifolium. They all have a similar taste and feel to them, and all contain similar profiles of vaguely estrogen-like isoflavones such as genistein and daidzein. . . . . #nature #natural #herbal #plant #herbalmedicine #medicinalherbs #naturalhealth #naturopathy #holistichealth #organic #wild

Happy St. Patrick’s Day
by Mason Heberling
Collected in Ireland in 1891, this specimen was found by Susan and Edward Harper, who were plant collectors from the Field Museum in Chicago. This specimen is a clover species (Trifolium campestre), known as hop trefoil or field clover. Clovers usually refer to a group of species that belong to the genus Trifolium, meaning three-leafed.
Next year, we will look for that mystical four-leaf clover among the 1,877 clover specimens in Carnegie Museum of Natural History’s Herbarium.
Mason Heberling is a postdoctoral research associate at Carnegie Museum of Natural History. Museum employees are encouraged to blog about their unique experiences working with museum collections.
