Soul Jar is a wide-ranging collection of sci-fi and fantasy stories by disabled authors. Most of the stories feature openly disabled and/or neurodivergent characters and some deal with ableism, but mainly they feature many kinds of people in the kind of SFF stories I love to read. They vary widely in tone and topic, meaning that there's something for everyone, probably several stories to catch your fancy.

Song Review: The Infamous Stringdusters - “Down the Road”
Perfect harmonies and flawless playing help establish the Infamous Stringdusters’ reverence for Flatt & Scruggs on the former’s remake of the latter’s “Down the Road.”
The track was “a staple of the Flatt & Scruggs canon and one they recorded early in their career,” Andy Hall said in a statement. “It has what we like to refer to in the bluegrass world as ‘drive.’ Not too fast, but powerful.”
Indeed. And the ’Dusters bolster that drive as each player - Hall on Dobro, guitarist Andy Falco, banjoist Chris Pandolfi, fiddler Jeremy Garrett and bassist Travis Book - gets in his licks after they announce the song with:
Down the down/down the road/got a little pretty gal down the road
The track follows “I’d Rather be Alone” ahead of the A Tribute to Flatt & Scruggs, the six-track EP arriving April 21.
Grade card: The Infamous Stringdusters - “Down the Road” - A

"Clyde" Short Story by Travis Flatt
We stopped at a phone booth to tell mom we’d found Morganton. Cell phones were only TV props in the early ‘90s. Our motel wasn’t open yet. While my dad went to the booth to call, an old man wearing a rainbow wig and dirty tuxedo jacket rode by our truck on bicycle, jingling the bells to greet the empty street. The morning was hot. Dad’s buddy, Clyde, leaned over in the truck cab, said, “There…

Marty Stuart and His Fabulous Superlatives at Columbus Anthenaeum, Columbus, Ohio, Nov. 21, 2024
Preserving truth in advertising and nomenclature, Marty Stuart and His Fabulous Superlatives stormed the Columbus Anthenaeum stage and burst forth with the thunderclap-instrumental “La Tingo Tango,” then moved quickly into a fiery rendition of the call-and-response “Tear the Woodpile Down” that had the small, Thursday-night audience making up with enthusiasm what it lacked in size.
“Good night!,” Stuart joked after the second number as the small theater took on the atmosphere of a packed arena headed for the encore break.
But Stuart, in black leather pants, ubiquitous neck covering and fringe jacket, and His sequined, multi-colored FabSupes - guitarist “Cousin” Kenny Vaughan, drummer “Handsome” Harry Stinson and bassist “Professor” Chris Scruggs - were just getting warmed up for what would be a hot, 100-minute performance in the unseasonably cold and snowy Ohio capital that for Nov. 21 Stuart dubbed the Surf Music Capital and baptized with the instrumental “Mojave” as he and Vaughan tangled their six strings in unison and unified counterpoint while the rhythm section held things firmly in place.
Stuart is the star attraction, and sang the majority of the nearly two dozen songs on the setlist while playing lead and rhythm acoustic and electric guitar, mandolin and electric sitar. But he also left no doubt the aptly named Fabulous Superlatives are a band and he is not a solo artist these days.
So it went that Vaughan burned up the blues during his spotlights on “Country Music Got a Hold on Me” and “Hot Like That.” The ebullient, double-bass slapping Scruggs tapped Bob Wills & his Texas Playboys with “Brain Cloudy Blues.” And Stinson, resplendent in red, emerged from his kit to brush a snare and strum a 12-string acoustic as he turned to folk music on Woody Guthrie’s “Pretty Boy Floyd,” on which he held a note for some 15 seconds as the crowd went berserk, and sung sweetly on the Byrds’ “Ballad of Easy Rider.”
Always fans of the aforementioned band - Stuart and the boys backed Roger McGuinn and Chris Hillman on their pre-pandemic Sweetheart of the Rodeo tour - the quartet gathered around a single mic to delivery a stunning rendition of the Byrds’s JFK-centric reboot of “He Was a Friend of Mine.” With poignant three-part harmonies and an elegiac mandolin solo over martial snare drum, this was the antidote to the Supes’ otherwise-playful performance, where songs came rapid-fire in front of a backdrop emblazoned with a cowboy on a bucking bronc.
As such, Stuart turned his and Travis Tritt’s “The Whiskey Ain’t Workin’” into a strutting blues; he worked a reference to his wife, Connie Smith, into the “truck-driver’s national anthem” that was a singalong “Six Days on the Road;” bent minds and strings on his plugged-in sitar while mashing the Beatles and the Byrds on the original “Space;” and spent the show mugging for the audience, fawning over his compatriots and proving even though he is considered country, Stuart, a veteran of Lester Flatt and Johnny Cash’s bands, understands good music is good music and therefore plays all of it.
But when he and the FabSupes closed the main set with “Time Don’t Wait,” an unabashed rewrite of “I’ll Feel a Whole Lot Better” with Vaughan on an electric Rickenbacker guitar, Stuart seemed to confirm McGuinnian folk-rock is his favorite music of all.

Hey Carmen.😀
For the ask game: dahlia, marigold, orchid and hydrangea for Randall?
I gotta go with the obvious, the one that his tag came from
Any one where he's sitting.
Maybe it's weird, but I think the way he sits is cute 🥺
Yes, he's my favorite character. Dean Hardscrabble from Monsters University is a close second because I may or may not have a crush on her, even though centipedes terrify me
Before I do, let me just say that I have more heart cells than brain cells, so I'll add any love song I hear to my self-ship playlists. Also, quite a few of them are explicit. More than I thought, anyway 🤣

okay i’ve talked about redneck atsumu with karaoke and now it’s OSAMU
he’s got a nice voice. not as polished as atsumu, but good enough that people don’t groan when he steps on stage and he’s always the one at bonfires singing with a guitar.
he’s usually pretty tipsy when he steps on the stage in the little bar in town
unlike atsumu, he’s not quite as dramatic. usually just goes with basic songs. (he once did an atsumu-level rendition of before he cheats after drinking nearly his weight in moonshine)
every once in a while though (usually after drinking wine) he gets a lil sappy and lays out love songs that has all the girls (and the old ladies) swooning. he always looks directly at you when he does this though
when he gets sappy, he gets sappy. i’m talking rascal flatts’ bless the broken road (which has always been y’all’s song even though y’all were each other’s first everything) (it’s bc it’s the song that was playing during y’all’s first dance at a school dance in sixth grade)
rarely, rarely, atsumu drags him up there and they perform fun songs, like the devil went down to georgia or redneck yacht club. osamu pretends to hate it but you can tell he’s having the time of his life by the way he smiles and saunters off the stage to dance with you in the middle of the song
when you went off to college he gets completely wasted and sits in the middle of the stage and sings what hurts the most by rascal flatts (the old ladies cry over him when he’s done)
but when you come back??? he sings forever and ever, amen by randy travis (the old ladies cry over him again when he pulls you on stage)
and don’t get me STARTED on when y’all’s oldest daughter starts dating years and years later. there’s literally nothing funnier than him and atsumu singing cleaning this gun by rodney atkins while glaring at the poor soul who asked your daughter out
