World Rainbow Hotels ✈ This modern travel directory combines a curated list of stylish, queer-friendly hotels in countries where attitudes toward gay, lesbian, bisexual, and trans travelers are for the most part accepting. The website also features an image-driven blog full of travel inspiration, global news, events, and other articles.

Travel Gayand Travel Gay Asia ✈ These twin booking sites serve a predominantly gay male audience, pointing international travelers to city guides with relevant information about bars, clubs, saunas, shops, beaches, and events, as well as queer-friendly hotels across the globe.

GayCities ✈ A similarly gay male–focused online travel guide, this web resource recommends gay-friendly bars, clubs, restaurants, hotels, shops, gyms, and more in 238 different cities from Cape Town to Mexico City.

For LGBTQ travelers who’d rather leave trip planning to the experts, award-winning tour operators such as Outstanding Travel, Zoom Vacations, Out Adventures, Toto Tours, Detours Travel, and Concierge Travel all offer a diverse array of international group and private trips. International tour operator R Family Vacations also designs and leads LGBTQ family-friendly trips (plus a few new adults-only options) on land and at sea for public groups and individuals. The queer-run wilderness education organization, The Venture Out Project, operates LGBTQ-specific backpacking trips in the United States for teens, adults, and families.

LGBTQ-friendly cruises

Inclusive travel company Vacaya hosts curated LGBTQ getaways on chartered cruise ships, as well as to all-LGBTQ international resorts. The popular lesbian travel brand Olivia Cruises has been running entertainment-filled cruise, resort, adventure, and riverboat group trips exclusively for queer female–identified travelers since 1990. And cruise company Source Events, which caters predominantly to gay men and their families, organizes both all-gay charters and private LGBTQ groups aboard larger cruise ships (as well as personalized cruise journeys and on-land group itineraries).

From joining queer-specific networking groups, to checking for upcoming LGBTQ events in different cities, to starting important conversations about shared experiences through hashtags such as #travelingwhiletrans, LGBTQ travelers have long relied on social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter when planning for domestic and international trips. More recently, meetup apps have created new opportunities for connection between LGBTQ travelers.

Meetup ✈ This stalwart community-building platform is a great tool for connecting with fellow LGBTQ folks and getting to know local queer scenes on the road. decided to talk about the bugs from my previous post more because it IS important.

EAST COAST AMERICAN FOLK!!! LOOK OUT FOR THIS BUG:

the following states are keeping their eye out for it: connecticut, delaware, indiana, maryland, massachusetts, michigan, new jersey, new york, north carolina, ohio, pennsylvania, rhode island, virginia, west virginia

this guy is called the spotted lanternfly and they’re BAD.

what’s the deal with these guys?? well they WRECK the environment. they do the following;

“Nymphs and adults feed on plants, using their piercing mouthparts to suck sap from trunks and stems. This has been shown to cause stunted growth, localized damage, and reduced yields. Additionally, as the spotted lanternfly feeds, it excretes a sugary substance called honeydew. Honeydew is attractive to ants, wasps, and bees. Honeydew can develop an intense, rotten odor as it ferments. It is also readily colonized by black, sooty mold which can cover leaves and inhibit photosynthesis. Sooty mold can also cover manmade structures and can be difficult to remove.”  (taken from the maryland gov dept of agriculture)

they stunt plant growth in the environment and thus they wreck the natural food web as they are INCREDIBLY invasive. they have no natural predators so they just keep going and going.

if you see one, what should you do???

if you can, try to take a photo of them!!! THEN KILL IT!!! after that, be sure you look up your state’s agricultural department to see if you need to send in a report. some states do not require them anymore as it is confirmed that they inhabit the environment, and the best thing you can do at this rate is to just get rid of them. you won’t have to take photos anymore.

if your state DOES require a report, make sure to put in all the details you can and attach your photo! it’s incredibly important to try to quarantine counties before they can spread too far.

lastly be sure to stay vigilant! check your car before you travel if you’re located in a quarantine area! where there’s one, there’s probably more. if you have the time, check nearby plants or trees for their eggs (pictured in the second photo above, figure B) and see if you can remove them!

Great question, and I’m excited that you want to learn! It highly depends on your area, as each region has different plants. 

Apps:

Try seeking out reputable field guides that have been turned into apps. (Such as Peterson or Audubon). You may also find that different societies/whatever have created localized guides and turned them into apps.

There are a lot of Plant ID apps where you simply take a photo and it gives you it’s guesses. I haven’t personally used any, but they seem like a decent starting point if you have absolutely no clue. But please don’t use them as a sole identifier!

Edit: iNaturalist is a decent one because it has it’s first guess from whatever picture you submit, and then people review it and can either agree or disagree with your initial ID and provide their own.

Websites:

I look for websites that are created by government organizations, plant societies, museums, universities, tribal organizations, field guide publishers, etc.

When trying to identify a plant, sometimes something as simple as googling “purple flower shrub ___ (your area)” and looking at the image results can help you out, then go to more reliable sources to fact check. 

I’d also recommend familiarizing yourself with botanical terms, or at least figuring them out each time you have a mystery plant you want to identify. (Think: leaf shapes, branching patterns--opposite, alternate, whorled, other?--, flower types, fruit types, etc.) This is a huge rabbit hole you can go down but those four things are very helpful for basic identification. 

Here are some search queries to try:

Wild plants of ___ (your area)

Native plants of ___ (your area)

Weeds of ___ (your area)

List of ___ (your area) plants

___ (your area) plant guide

Broaden the search if your area isn’t pulling up much. For example, I’m in Washington state so I might try “Pacific Northwest” or “West Coast” or even “North America” if desperate.

Lots of libraries have field guides, I recommend borrowing them and seeing what formats work for you!

And please comb through secondhand bookshops, there’s no need to drop a small fortune on field guides! There are very few that I buy new and that’s because they’re worth it, and good enough that they won’t be in used bookshops anytime soon!

Expenses and cancellation fees : As well as the more standard terms and conditions, you might also want to consider detailing the expenses and additional costs you expect your client to cover during the time you’re working with them. These additional costs could include things like travel expenses for meetings or overnight accommodation costs. By outlining the exact terms of any extra fees or expenses, both you and your client will understand exactly how much everything is going to cost before any work is done, meaning you can focus on the job itself and building a good relationship with your client.

You’ll also want to agree a cancellation fee (if you have one at all) as well as information about the terms of late payments.

Set out your graphic design terms and conditions: In your graphic design contract, you’ll want to confirm your terms and conditions in writing ahead of starting work for any client. Setting out clear boundaries means your clients will understand exactly what you’ll be doing and when you’ll be doing it. Setting out these terms clearly will help to avoid help avoid any disputes over delivery times or payment terms.

Fair use’ :Under US and UK law, the ‘fair use’ principle exists to prevent copyright law from hindering free speech, freedom of the press, and to avoid excessive legal action for accidental or minor breaches of copyright. It allows content creators (including designers) to include quotes and excerpts from published works if they credit the author and source, and justify the extent of its use. Fair use is usually applied to news reporting, incidental references and private or educational use. Outside of these cases, it’s wise to seek the owner’s permission.

Creative Commons

Creative Commons (CC) licences automatically give people the right to use, modify or share content. There are various degrees of permissions:

CC0 is public domain, meaning the content is anyone’s to use, modify and share – no strings attached.

CC BY (CC Attribution) is anyone’s to share, use and modify, if you credit the original creator.

CC BY-SA (CC Attribution-ShareAlike) is as above, but requires you to share any modifications under the same licence.

CC BY-ND (CC Attribution-NoDerivatives) allows credited use and sharing, but not modification.

CC BY-NC (CC Attribution-NonCommercial) allows credited use, sharing and modification – but not for profit.

CC BY-NC-SA (CC Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike) is as above, but you must share any modifications under the same licence.

Font licensing

These are a whole different ball game, so let’s start with the basics: while you're licensed to use preloaded fonts in programs like Photoshop, this isn't the same as owning them. Most licenses allow designers to use the fonts to create designs and documents on their computer, but not necessarily to ‘embed’ them or, in other words, share the font with unlicensed users.

Here are the four permission levels you’re likely to encounter, and what they mean in practice:

‘No embedding’ – you can’t embed these fonts in a digital document.

‘Preview and print’ – you can embed the fonts in a digital document (for example a PDF), but only to be viewed on a screen or printout.

‘Editable’ – you can embed fonts in a digital document, and it's fine for the recipient to view, print or edit the text.

‘Installable’ – the recipient can install the font to create completely new documents.

In web design, there are a few common approaches to sharing and rendering fonts:

‘Web-safe’ fonts are a small selection of fonts commonly found across both Apple and Windows computers, typically used by designers to ensure that text renders as well as possible in various web browsers. The operating system licence governs these fonts.

‘Rasterised’ fonts are turned into images and therefore not embedded.

‘CSS @font-face’ instructs the browser to temporarily download the font onto a user’s computer, and these fonts have their own licence terms.

Adobe Typekit gives subscribers access to a catalogue of fonts and has its own terms of use.

Logo ownership: the client or the designer?

Unlike other areas of graphic and web design, it’s common for the client to have ownership of the logo you design for them.

A logo design is such an essential part of the day-to-say functioning of a business that it’s easier for clients to have all the legal rights of ownership

Also, business owners want to protect their brand identity and logos are a big part of that. If the designer owns the rights, a business can’t register the logo design under the Intellectual Property Rights which can cause a number of legal issues further down the line for business owners.

Intellectual Property (IP)

Anything original that someone creates using their own mind is their intellectual property. Intellectual property rights allow you to make money from the intellectual property you own. Intellectual property can have more than one owner and it can be bought and sold to individuals or businesses.

You own intellectual property if you: created it bought it from the creator or previous owner have a brand that could be a trademark (e.g. a well-known product name)

Types of Intellectual Property (IP)

Automatic protection

Copyright

Protects your work and stops others from using it without your knowledge or permission. You automatically get copyright protection when you create something original such as an illustration or a photograph. You can mark your work with a ©, your name and the year you created it. However, doing this won’t affect the level of protection you have.

Design right

Automatically protects designs to prevent someone from copying you 10 years after it was sold or 15 years after it was created (whichever is earliest). Design rights only apply to the shape or configuration of 3D objects; you must register to protect 2D designs like graphics or textiles.

Protection you need to apply for

Trademark : Registering your trade mark can help to protect your brand. For example, you can trade mark the name of a product or service. You can use the ® to show that you’ve got the trade mark and you’ll be able to take legal action against anyone who tries to use your brand without your permission.

Registered designs : You can register the look of something you’ve designed to stop people copying or stealing it. The ‘look’ of a design is its appearance, physical shape, configuration and decoration. Shapes of objects might already be automatically protected by design right, but registering it will give you further protection.

Patents :To be granted a patent, your invention must be completely new (not a modification of something that already exists) and it must be something that can be made or used. Patents are notoriously expensive and difficult to get, so you’ll need to think carefully about whether you really need one or not.

If you’re like me and your bank account is not big enough to get one of those lie-flat comfy seats in business or first class, this guide is definitely for you! No way!I ended up doing some more research and finding another airline whose airfare was a little more expensive, but whose reviews were great.  It was Cathay Pacific, and it was the best decision I could’ve made. Friendly flight attendants, pretty good food, and spacious, comfortable seats.Make sure you research all the airlines you are considering. Not all airlines are created equal; in fact, long-haul travel may be where you find the most significant differentiation between airlines.  If you can, choose a newer model plane. It will be equipped with up-to-date equipment and amenities.You’ll want to make sure that it has in-seat power outlets. Believe it or not, but many airplanes still don’t have power sources at the seats. This means your phone is probably going to die before you land and you’ll be forced to listen to in-flight music.Speaking of seats, that’s the next thing you should focus on. Picking the right seat is equally as important. Now I’m usually a window seat person, but the thought of being stuck in a window seat for 16 hours straight (flight from JFK to Hong Kong) gave me anxiety! The aisle seat is the best way to survive a long-haul flight because you will have the luxury of being able to stand frequently and stretch your legs and make frequent bathroom visits without disturbing your seatmates.You can go to SeatGuru, which has airline seat maps and a comfort rating system. You can plug in your flight number, and it shows you the layout of your plane. Not only can you see what seats you can choose in your cabin, but there are also reviews from previous passengers. They let you know things like if a seat is uncomfortable, a seat does not recline,  or if the seat does not have overhead space. I found this super helpful.Picking a seat that is not too close to the bathrooms or galley helps so much if you do not want to be disturbed. You can also consider an exit row which gives you more legroom. Whether you like a window or aisle seat, do yourself a favor and really plan ahead for this part. I promise you that it’s worth it. Actually, it’s mostly a miss if we’re being honest.  It can be so unpredictable, and that’s why it’s essential to bring your own supply of snacks. The worst thing that can happen is being hungry on a long-haul flight- which you can avoid with this tip. You’ve probably read some articles that tell you not to eat anything salty or high in carbs. Well, forget them! I say, bring all your favorite snacks. Just make sure you have variety.I personally like my snack repertoire to cover all bases: salty and sweet! But even more importantly, I love my stash to be nutritious enough to keep me satisfied. Make sure to pack food that’s good at room temperature. Wear comfortable clothingWhat you wear on your flight is so vital. Dressing in layers is key because you can quickly adapt to the plane’s temperature.  I like dressing in layers since you can never know what the temperature will be like. Plus, you are traveling for hours, so my guess is, the climate in the location you are going to will be different than the one you left. The best long haul travel outfit to me is leggings, loose-fitting long sleeve t-shirt, a cardigan, and a scarf that I can also use as a blanket if it gets really cold. Layers!I also like to wear shoes you can slip on and off easily, for long haul flight comfort and ease at the security line. Also, when you’re getting up to go to the bathroom or just walk around, you’ll want something you can easily slip your feet into and go.Last but not least, make sure have a pair of compression socks. Long hours on a plane can cause pressure, swelling, and poor circulation. These socks help increase circulation and reduce the risk of swelling or worse deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and clotting on a long flight.Here’s my go-to comfortable outfit for a long flight.4. Hydrate, Hydrate, HydrateI remember that on my flight to Greece, I had to practically beg the flight attendant to refill my cup with water (awful airline). I didn’t have my own water bottle. Big flying rookie mistake and after that, I said never again! Long flights dehydrate you a lot. If you step off of a plane and feel like crap, it’s not because you’re sick, but probably because you’re dehydrated. Not drinking enough water can make you feel fatigued, nauseous, and give you a headache.Airplanes are the perfect environment for draining you of all moisture. So staying hydrated is one of the best ways to prevent jet lag. I now bring with me a large water bottle like this insulated steel one– fill it up after going through security and nicely ask the flight attendants during the flight to refill it. Bringing a good moisturizer is so important too. Your skin will also need love. This  Clinique moisturizer is my favorite. Hydration is everything!5. Make sure to pack long flight travel essentials in your carry-on.There’s nothing like getting on a long flight and realizing that you either forgot something or that you packed it in your checked luggage. Imagine you forgot to include your headphones in your carry-on and you now have to listen to a crying baby for 8 hours?! Ugh, I’d die! Being well prepared and having all your long flight essentials in your carry-on is crucial to be able to survive a long-haul flight.  For my trip to Thailand, I bought a backpack for all my essentials and kept it under the seat in front of me. That way, I had easy access to it and did not have to get up and reach for the overhead every time I needed something. It was also cool to use the backpack as a footrest!Here are some of the items I suggest bringing with you. Set your watch to your destination time as soon as possible.Syncing yourself with your destination time zone helps tremendously in preparing your body to adjust to the time zone of wherever you’re going to. I like to change the time on my phone as soon as I board the plane. Once you see what time it is at your destination, try to stay awake when it’s daytime there and get some sleep when it’s nighttime.7. Try to get some sleepLet’s be honest, trying to sleep in economy can be downright difficult, but it’s still possible with some help. The trick is to try to get as comfortable as possible. This is where the dressing comfortably, your blanket, eye mask, and neck pillow will come in handy. I use the airline provided pillow as lower back support and my own neck pillow to cradle my head. Chamomile tea actually proved quite helpful in making me sleepy on my long-haul flight.  And if all fails then medicate yourself! With something over-the-counter, of course! Sleep aids can help both during the flight and with jetlag when you arrive at your destination. If you are planning to use sleep aids (including melatonin, or prescription drugs such as Ambien), make sure you try them before you fly. These drugs can vary significantly in how they affect people, so you will want to try them at home before you rely on them on the plane.Make sure to get some sleep in order to survive a long-haul flight8. Bring backup entertainmentThere’s only so much tv binging you can do on a long-haul flight before starting to feel a little restless. On my 10 hour flight home from Greece I watched 3 movies in a row and then started to feel all antsy. I didn’t want to watch any more movies and needed something else to do. You might probably feel the same way.So before you go crazy, make sure you have things to keep you entertained. Bring your tablets or e-readers and download your favorite movies, tv shows, podcasts, or anything else that will keep you sane. A magazine is also a good thing to bring if you want to take a break from staring at a screen.9. Familiarize yourself with your layover airportIf you have a long layover, it’s a great idea to familiarize yourself with the airport that will be your home for several hours. What kind of food do they have? What shops do they have? What times are they open? Do they have lounges that accept economy or business passengers? These are all good things to know. You might be thinking “well I can just explore these things while I’m there,” but it’s always best to do your research before arriving and know where to find what you will need – sleeping pods, lounges, food courts, baggage storage facilities, entertainment areas if any! You can find all this information on the airport website.I thought that you had to be a first-class, business class, or elite member in order to use the amenities at airport lounges. But after reading up on the Hong Kong airport, where I had a 4-hour layover, I found out there was a lounge that was available to all passengers for a fee. I was able to eat and relax in a super comfy lounger my entire time there! Another thing to check is to see if the airport has free layover tours.Some airlines even offer to sponsor your visas so you can tour the city. A number of the airports which offer layover city tours are Singapore, Taiwan, Seoul Korea, and Doha – ask the concierge, and they should know what you can do with your time there. I’ll actually be taking advantage of this in October where I’ll be in Doha for a layover from Bali.10. Reach out to the airline about a seat upgradeLet’s face it, not all of us have thousands of dollars to spend on upgrading to business class or first class. Shoot I can’t even afford premium economy! But if you can afford an upgrade, it will make a world of difference in your flight experience. If you can’t, there are some other things you can try.While getting a free upgrade to a different cabin is a long shot, you might be able to get a seat with more legroom. I have found it’s worth reaching out to the airline on their social media. I’ve had good experiences contacting them on Twitter. They’re usually so helpful. You can also try when you’re at the airport. If the flight is not full, the gate agent may be able to move you to a seat with more legroom like an exit row.
