Sanim script, revised.

For years my old conlang and conscript projects have been sitting in a file somewhere, copied over from computer to computer, but otherwise untouched. Lately I've found the motivation to revisit the old hobby, give it a fresh look, and perhaps try out some different approaches. (Also at some point I realized that creating interesting-looking scripts and writing systems was the part I enjoyed the most about creating conlangs, so that's the part I'm going to focus on going forward.)

I'm starting with Sanim, since it was the simplest script and the one that needed the least revisions. This time around I'm hoping to flesh it out more, beyond just the base letters — grammar, math, even different writing styles. Here's a handwritten sample:

Eventually I'd like to revisit all of the scripts I've made, and perhaps make some new ones? Maybe even return to the larger world-building project they were attached to, and some of the places and characters I left hanging. One step at a time, though.

The text is penned on parchment in an early style of Arabic script called ma'il, one of a number of early Arabic scripts collectively named ‘Hijazi’ after the region in which they were developed. The word ma'il itself means ‘sloping’, in this case to the right. It is also notable for its lack of diacritical marks, the spelling symbols that distinguish between letters of similar shape.

In this Qur'an, as in other ancient fragments, there are no vowel signs or other aids to pronunciation, and the end of each verse is indicated by six small dashes in two stacks of three. The chapter heading in red ink has been added later in naskhi script, and differs from the rest of the text.

The 13th century Swedish peasant boy who's crashing on my couch keeps eating my leftover General Tso's. I always tell him he can order his own but he's all "oh no, just wonton soup is fine with me, it reminds me of winters at home by the fire" but when I open the fridge the next day, what do I see? Not my leftovers! I don't even think they had wontons in medieval Sweden.

Hello my friends, I am writing this post to support my in trying to save my family of 9 who are stuck in Gaza, including 3 children whose small bodies cannot bear this difficult life (the cold of the tents and the lack of any rights for children) in light of this war of extermination...

My family now lives in tents in a refugee camp after losing everything they own. Not to mention that they suffer from constant fear and anxiety due to the destruction that befell their area and also suffer from lack of healthcare, clean water and food, they barely have access to water that is not clean and food is not a healthy lunch they only eat little to support their weak bodies to get through their days hoping for a better life in the near future.

We ask you to share our story, in hopes that our voices reach someone who can help provide a safer environment for our children and extend a helping hand🙏🏼🙏🏼🤍💐.
