Nikola Tesla has many revolutionary inventions to his credit, but he is best known for his pioneering work in the development and promotion of alternating current (AC) electrical systems. Tesla's innovations in AC technology revolutionized the generation, transmission, and distribution of electrical power, becoming the foundation for the modern electrical power systems that we use today.
There is a common misconception made that Tesla was the first to invent, or discover, AC, but this is not true. It is well-known that Hippolyte Pixii was the first to discover AC in 1832. Pixii was an instrument maker from Paris who built an early form of an alternating current electrical generator (based on the principle of electromagnetic induction discovered by Michael Faraday), and thus started a new industry in power transmission. Tesla was not the first to discover or invent an AC motor, but he was the first to invent a practical AC induction motor with commercial value that could outperform all other motors. Chaos. The battlefield around them went still for what felt like a brief eternity as Kaido landed a final, lethal blow. A small figure (and god, he was so small next to that towering dragon) plummeted from the sky, still billowing steam in wreaths.
A dead weight, as though he was an anchor with its rope cut, sinking to the sea floor.
Zoro could hear someone, Nami, probably, screaming “LUFFY!”, but it was muffled and distant through his ringing ears, as though he had been plunged into the deep, crushing water, cold beneath the cruel waves.
His vision had completely narrowed down, tunnel vision reducing his sight to hyperfocus on the unconscious form as it plunged to its resting place.
Badum. Badum. Badum. Bad-.... Silence.
Zoro’s chest contracted, as he felt something snap with a sharp twang, sending a pang of blisteringly cold pain through him.
His eyes widened. Lurching forward, his feet tried to carry him to his captain. Catch him. Save him. Protect him. His knees buckled. Zoro landed heavily on his knees, arms hanging limp and useless at his sides.
He dully recognised the feeling of his swords, Sandai Kitetsu, and Enma slipping out of his shocked-lax hands, Wado Ichimonji falling from his slack jaw. Zoro didn’t hear the clink of metal on stone as they fell. He didn’t hear the cries of shock, sorrow, fear, and triumph sounding from all around him. He didn’t hear Nami’s silent, shaking sobs. He didn’t hear the cook’s gasp and disbelieving curse. He didn’t hear Robin’s quiet “Sencho!” He didn’t hear Ussop’s uncharacteristic quietness. He didn't notice anything. Nothing but the impact of Luffy’s body as it hit the ground. The crater it formed. The massive cloud of dust that rose from the force of his fall.
Zoro was so, so cold.
He felt frozen to the core, as though his very heart had stopped its perpetual chore, frozen solid by the sudden cold. Zoro felt as though he would never warm again. His Sun had been extinguished.
Zoro couldn't hear anything. His captain’s heart was still. The steady drumbeat of that rubbery muscle pumping freedom and laughter through Luffy’s body was conspicuously missing.
Silenced forever.
And in its wake, it left a vacuum, a gaping maw of silence that sucked every other sound into it. Without that ever-present pacer, Zoro was lost. How could he move? What was he to match his footfall to? How could he time the swing of his swords?
His body, it seemed, was not as useless as his heart or mind, and it reclaimed its grip on his swords, Wado clenched between locked jaws, as his arms swung up with Haki hardened blades to meet the heavy head of an axe with a resounding clang.
Like a flood, sound filled Zoro’s ears, his vision widening once again to encompass the barren rock plane they fought on. It was overwhelming. Even as his senses filled, his mind remained empty, incapable of comprehending the undeniable fact of Luffy’s death.
Thankfully, his muscle memory forced his body to fend off blow after blow, defeating enemies as they surged on the remaining Strawhats. It seemed they were spurned by the fall of the largest threat, Strawhat Luffy, and decided to take advantage of the horrified state of the crew.
Too bad. Zoro wasn’t losing anyone else to this fight. He would never be able to join his captain knowing he had left the others defenceless. His own fall would have to wait.
As Zoro mindlessly cut down the last enemy in his path, numb and detached, his ears twitched. He picked up a faint sound. Quiet, but quickly gaining a soaring volume. It was achingly familiar, yet foreign and wrong.
He dared not hope.
Bum. Bum. Bum. Bum. Bum.
The battlefield seemed to go still around Zoro, as though it was all narrowed down to that one pinprick of sound.
Looking around, the battle raged on, yet everything was muted, as though the drum beat had overtaken his ears, leaving them only able to hear that steady pound.
He recognised that steady thrum.
And how could he not, when Zoro’s own heart was beating to its tune?
To the pace of a beloved rubber one. One stretched to full capacity to encompass all. One that soared high in the sky as they sailed toward the horizon. One belonging to his Captain.
Zoro’s eyes opened (when had he closed them?) as he heaved out a disbelieving, yet relieved nonetheless, sigh. His ears filled with the booming sound of drums and the laugh of a god. A white streak flew across the inky sky, stilling, suspended like a portrait framed by the moon. A figure who glowed like the sun with divine power. Heavenly.
Luffy.
His frozen body warmed as his heart seemed to resume its duty, thawed by the Sun like ice-coated pine needles. He felt as though he had never been warm before this moment. As though he was only now stepping into the comfort of the Sun. Though Luffy had always been the Sun to Zoro, who had contented himself with being the worshipping Moon.
Zoro scoffed, flexing his hands around the hilts of his swords as he regained his body, still shaken, but now unworried.
Kaido never stood a chance.

Jenna was a whirlwind of confidence and energy, the kind of girl who thrived on grease and engine oil rather than lipstick or designer shoes. Today, she sported her favorite loose jeans and a faded flannel shirt, her black hair falling around her shoulders in a carefree mess. She had decided today was a maintenance day for her beloved black Ford F-150, which had been her companion through countless adventures over the years. She loved that truck; it was rugged, dependable, and just like her—no nonsense. There was nothing like the thrill of driving her truck down the open road, only pavement between her and the horizon.

As she pulled her truck into an open bay in the local garage, the scent of gasoline and metal wafted through the cab’s open windows, stirring a familiar excitement within her. After finishing the installation, she hopped back in the cab, her heart racing as the engine roared its approval of her repairs. It was music to her ears. She couldn’t wait to take her ride back out on the highway.

She spent the next long while thoroughly tidying up the bed and backseat, the vacuum’s roar mingling with the background clang and hum of the auto shop as she reminisced about solo road trips and rugged nights spent camping under the stars.
Suddenly, the universe shivered ominously with a feeling of imbalance, and everything froze for just a moment before resetting.
Jennifer now stood in front of a sleek silver Hyundai Elantra, her appearance transformed. She wore skinny jeans and a bright fitted tee that hugged her curves, her brunette hair cascading in gentle waves over her shoulders. “Of course,” the mechanic said, his gaze lingering on her for a moment longer than necessary. “Let’s take a look.”
She glanced down at his name tag. “Thanks so much… Mark! You’re a lifesaver!” she gushed while tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. She couldn’t help but notice his well-defined muscles.
While he worked, Jennifer wandered the shop, fidgeting absentmindedly with the hem of her fashionable shirt. Why was adulting so stressful, she thought to herself. Once the mechanic had finished diagnosing the problem and explained that he could fix it today, she sighed with relief and gratitude, and offered to help clean the car while he worked.
“I can handle the vacuuming,” she said with a light laugh, her cheeks tinged a rosy pink with a hint of embarrassment as she blushed. She wanted to show this handsome guy that she wasn’t totally helpless. The mechanic smiled back, appreciating her eagerness. And the way her blush matched her lipstick.
After a while, he returned with news that her car’s repair was complete. “All done! You can pick up the keys at the front whenever you’re ready to settle up.”
“Thanks!” Jennifer replied, her pretty smile brightening the room. Minutes later, she waved goodbye, feeling accomplished, and confident that she knew how to take good care of her car, at least with Mark’s help.

After a short wait, he finished up and delivered the good news. Her car was clean and in good working order. Jenny jumped up, a burst of excitement propelling her lithe body gracefully out of her chair, her figure moving in a way that drew the mechanic’s eye. She sauntered over in her cute, teal running shoes, and gave him a hug, her hands lingering on his sturdy triceps. “Thank you so much, Mike!” she chirped brightly, her eyes dazzling and her lips curled in a sultry smile.
But the universe was still unsatisfied and reset her and her surroundings once more.
Now, Jenni found herself the owner of a bright pink Volkswagen Beetle, a stark departure into the realm of bimbo chic. She wore a glamorous micro skirt and cropped tank top ensemble, all in cotton candy pink, her meticulously straightened platinum blonde hair flowing like a waterfall down her back. Chunky gold hoop earrings hung on either side of her stylishly made up face (pink lipstick, of course). Her tanned figure was noticeably curvaceous, accentuated by her skin-tight outfit. Her long manicured nails sparkled with glitter effects and jewels, and a pink rhinestone navel piercing adorned her midriff.

Oblivious to the flickering light on her dashboard, Jenni had driven around carelessly for days, relishing her stylish lifestyle until the Beetle sputtered and broke down on the side of the road. She totally freaked. She loved her car so so much; it was cute, curvy, and just like her—totally pink LOL! She even had a vanity plate, ‘P1NKGRL’, referring both to her car and its driver. A totally sweet tow truck driver brought her and her beloved Bug to a nearby mechanic, her heart racing with uncharacteristic worry.

Can you fix it, pretty please?” She leaned in closer, letting her ample assets nearly spill out of her skimpy top. “Mine’s the totes adorbs pink Beetle parked, like, right out front.” She batted her eyelashes for emphasis, her manicured eyebrows knitting together in an adorable expression of genuine concern.

The mechanic was instantly captivated, unable to take his eyes off his new customer. “I’ll take care of everything,” he assured her.
Now safe in the thought that a strong hunk of a guy would take care of her car troubles, Jenni’s confidence blossomed as she lounged in the waiting area, scrolling through her phone and snapping selfies. “Oh, by the way,” she said sweetly, “could you, like, clean the trunk for me while you’re at it? I really can’t handle anything with these nails.” She idly twirled a lock of her long blonde hair around her finger, playful and flirty, showing off her two-inch acrylic manicure. “I’ll like, totally make it worth your while! Maybe you can even take a closer look at *my* trunk,” she said boldly with an exaggerated wink. She glanced playfully at her curvaceous posterior, wrapped like a gift in her pink micro skirt.

The mechanic, already entranced, nodded eagerly. As he got to work, he flipped the sign on the front door to ‘CLOSED’ with an excited grin. This job might take a while, he thought to himself eagerly.
As he fixed her car, Jenni leaned back in her chair, fully engrossed in taking the cutest selfies for her Insta, raising her phone to get the most flattering angles, and pouting flirtatiously whenever she caught sight of her flawless reflection in the waiting room windows.

WIP Wednesday!
From Drive All Night:
Soon the lights dimmed and music from a single trumpet, warm and low, snaked throughout the room. A girl, maybe a couple years older than Nancy, stepped through the multicolored curtains. She had brown skin, a sweetly rounded face, and serious dark eyes ringed with kohl. Her dress was a simple, modestly cut midnight blue velvet, with absolutely adorable shoes to match. Nancy wondered how hard it would be to find sky blue pumps.  Then a butterfly, pink and luminescent, appeared in the girl’s hand, and Nancy forgot all about shopping.  “How?” she whispered to Heather, but the other girl just giggled. “A magician never reveals her secrets,” she said, gazing raptly at Kali.  More wonders followed: a swarm of butterflies, a flock of birds, a parade of dancing flowers. In vain, Nancy looked around for a film projector. Then she gave up, ordered a sidecar, and enjoyed the rest of the show.  Kali finished with a shower of light that rained down on her until it covered her body in shining golden scales. Then the lights went out. A split second later, they came on and she was gone. 
From Tonight, Tonight, The Highway's Bright:
Billy wasn’t in English class the following Monday, so Nancy offered to bring him the homework assignment for 1984. Mr. Lassiter smiled at her hesitantly and said it was nice of her. All the teachers were careful with her now; her transformation from goody-two-shoes bookworm to King Steve’s latest consort to screaming crazy girl to popular ice queen in the space of a few months had made them nervous. Nancy wore soft, fluffy pastel sweaters over demure knee-length skirts and put ribbons in her hair to smooth over the past (and, truth be told, to get a rise out of Carol, who hated her outfits), but of course people remembered her punching the wall. Her hand still ached when it rained.
From Tomorrow's a Long Way Off:
“There you are,” said a tired-looking Mr. Green as he entered the lobby. “Go help Robin clean up Cinema 1, will you? These kids are animals.”  Sure enough, Robin was standing in the middle of the theater next to the bright yellow cleaning cart, looking despairingly down at the fold-out seat. When Jonathan got close, he saw a suspicious dark patch on the worn red fabric. When he got closer, the ammonia smell of urine hit his nostrils. “Okay,” he told Robin. “Don’t panic.” “I’m not panicking,” she said. Her eyes were wide, and she sounded like she was trying not to laugh, which wasn’t reassuring. “Jonathan…they’re just so gross.”  “Some kids just get way too excited over Star Wars,” he said, suppressing a grin. It was gross, and he would’ve been in a much more sour mood if he’d had to face it alone. “It’s not a big deal. Paper towel, water and vinegar, baking soda, vacuum.
