My main strength as a collaborator is effective communication. I prioritize engaging with my peers and maintaining high energy, which fosters an inclusive environment where everyone feels encouraged to contribute. This openness aligns with research that highlights the importance of strong communication for trust and cohesion within teams (Wheelan). However, critical self-reflection has revealed the need to moderate my tone and volume. My enthusiasm can sometimes be overwhelming, impacting the balance of group dynamics. Research suggests that adjusting one’s communication style is essential for teamwork (Whetten and Cameron).

Beyond communication, my self-awareness helps me recognize challenges and work to improve them. Critical thinking supports this by allowing me to analyze my actions and adapt, emphasizing emotional intelligence in collaboration (Goleman). Learning from past interactions has reinforced that balancing energy with mindfulness enhances group effectiveness. In future Craft Workshop and Studio projects, applying this understanding will improve my collaboration and contribute to a more harmonious team experience. This approach resonates with my belief in the power of open communication and fostering inclusive environments. Just as Eliasson’s art encourages engagement and connection, I aim to contribute to creating a space where everyone feels heard and valued.

02. If you had more time and an unlimited budget, how would you design the monument differently? (79 words)

If I had more time and an unlimited budget, I would transform our “el gato” monument into a giant stained-glass sculpture, adding intricate details like stripes and cute eyes. The design would be expanded into a nature-blended mall, where free-roaming rescued cats create a dynamic, interactive, and inclusive environment. This would enhance the aesthetic and create an immersive, participatory experience, much like Olafur Eliasson’s works, where engagement and shared experience are central to the art itself.

Transferring to a new career

Training and experience in performance auditing provided skills that transferred well to testing computer systems/applications. Here is an example of a performance auditing report:

Testing compares actual to expected - looking for defects or unexpected/undesirable system behavior.

Politics runs in Brooke Crewson’s blood. From the age of five, she was helping her dad go door-to-door in his political campaigns, and at 15 she made the conscious decision to start volunteering to support campaigns she believed in. Despite that, she wasn’t 100% convinced of her future and pursued the parallel path of history and politics while studying at Wilfrid Laurier University. When she received job offers in both fields after graduating, Brooke had a tough decision to make. Should she pursue the potentially more stable job at a museum, or keep working towards a job she’d been dreaming about since she was 15? Brooke chose an internship at the Ontario Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and immediately was hooked. Not long after, however, a change of government left Brooke without a job – an experience she’s had more than once in her career. Brooke isn’t a quitter, and she’s bounced back each time. As she’s advanced her career, gaining new experiences in new offices, Brooke has developed a passion for creating and influencing positive public policies. With the instability of working for a government that can be voted out of office, Brooke has learned to take her extensive skill set and apply it to other areas, which has led her to work with Ryerson University’s Diversity Institute, and more recently as a Government Relations Consultant at Crestview Strategy. I made a custom walking stick for my son in law’s mother after she took a tumble while out for a walk and couldn’t get herself back on her feet. They live out in the country and she was walking on a dirt road so there was no traffic. She’s bruised and ant bit but thankfully no major damage. She thought she’d never be safe enough to go walking again but I can’t let that happen! I’m so proud of this walking stick because it’s full of love and good will. I also struggled with that during my last interview and I tried to translate, what I am capable of to people from free economics. They tend to have reservations towards people from academics and always justify them by a „lack of working experience“. I had worked at an university for five years as an researcher and you tell me I got no working experience at all? Thanks for nothing. But gladly I got the job (since there was no other applicant -.-)

Do you have any tips for avoiding interview anxiety? I always prepare, but my mind just goes blank when they ask specific questions. Maybe I need to format my notes better. Talking about my research and talking about my professional and academic experience feel totally different.

So for me, I noticed that practice really helps. Practice an elevator pitch for your research (ask friends for feedback!) and practice answers to common interview questions. There’s some questions that are EXTREMELY common, so just having rehearsed answers in your back pocket can be super useful. And if you practice them, then it becomes more second nature in conversation. 

Figuring out how academic research skills translate to other sectors can be a bit nebulous, but some key things you get great experience in a lab are:

Project management

Time management

Writing (both manuscripts and protocols!)

Data interpretation 

Presentation skills (oral communication)
