If possible could you do the Batkids summoning the Ghost King on a dare?
It starts with Tim because most insane things do. Kon had sent him a link to a trend, asking him to try it the next time Young Justice got together.
He made the mistake of clicking on the link while sitting near his siblings in the gaming room. The audio is also on full blast because he didn't realize his headphones were out of battery.
Thus while waiting for his turn to play Mario Kart, a loud male moan echoes from his speakers. Tim freezes in his seat, staring at his phone in horrified betrayal, as seven heads snap in his direction.
"Ugh, Timmy? Those are videos you should be watching alone" Dick says with half a teasing smirk. "I know you're growing up and are curious about-"
"It's not like that! It's a summoning circle!" Tim yelps, turning the phone around. On his screen, five male teenagers sit in a circle, each holding hands. Moaning. The caption reads, "Summoning the Ghost King! What's your offer?".
"What the hell?" Jason squints as the teenagers in the video burst into laughter. They jeer and taunt each other good naturally, indicating the random moaning was in jest.
"Oh, I know that trend!" Cullen chirps from the floor. He's been hugging the bowl of chips all night, laying down on his stomach to keep it guarded from the others. "Basically, you try to summon the Ghost King by offering something random. Guess he doesn't respond to human sacrifices or the typical stuff, so people have been getting creative. I once saw a group of girls who burned their training bras and offered the King the ashes. The point is to pick the weirdest thing you can think of."
"That's the stupidest thing I have ever heard. We have to try it." Steph announces, standing up. She pushes the coffee table out of the way. The rest of their siblings, who weren't as into the speeding game, perked up in interest. "What do we need?"
"Um," Tim scrolls through the comments. "We need four never before lite candles, each placed in the positions of the four directions. We have to sit crossed leg in a circle holding hands and call out to the King with a poem, and at the end, we make our offering."
Harper springs up. "I got some candles! Do they matter if it's scented?"
Tim checks online. "It's not recommended, but it's fine if they are."
"This is idiotic! Attempting to make contact with the Ghost King is far too dangerous. I shall take no part in this foolery!" Damian cuts in, face twisted into a- surprisingly- nervous frown. His hands are clasped tightly over each other while his eyes roam the room looking for unseen threats. If Tim didn't know any better, he said the brat was scared.
"Aw Dami, if you don't want to do a summons, we can play the game of life or something. It's okay to be scared of ghosts" Dick says, placing his hand on the kid's shoulder. He was obviously trying to comfort the kid but it has the opposite effect.
"I am not scared of a mere ghost!" Damian hisses. "I am merely stating we should not bother forces well out of our leagues!"
Jason snorts, planting himself on the ground as Harper returns. She had four different color candles, purple, blue, black, and green. After consulting with Cass- a human compass-she placed them facing the east, west, south, and north.
"Why did you make that disgusting noise Todd?" Damian demands narrowing his eyes at the striking man.
"Just admit you're scared of ghosts, brat. No one is going to judge you for it."
"I said I was not scared of a mere ghost. The Ghost King is far more powerful then-"
"Alright, alright. Damian is too much of a scary cat to play, but who else is in?" Steph cuts him off, a knowing glint in her eyes. The youngest flushes angrily before he marches between the green and black candle and sits with his legs crossed. A nasty scowl is playing on his lips, likely not noticing the high-five Jason and Steph share for getting him to join.
Cass gracefully falls right next to Damian, offering the younger boy a small. His scowl lessens just a little. Cullen crawls his way over, pressing the bowl of chips to his hip protectively once he's sitting up. He ended up between the green and the purple candle, offering Cass a smile. Harper lands next to Cullen, cracking her neck as if preparing for a fight.
Dick does an unnecessary flip over the couch to take the place between the purple and blue candles. Next to him, Steph sits, her knee bumping the blue candle slightly. Jason struts over to sit next to Steph right between the blue and black candle. Duke shares the space with him, giving just a slightly nervous chuckle as Tim and Babs push the black and green candle apart a little to squeeze into though Babs remains in her chair.
"Alright, so the person with the candle on their right side has to light it. Do it at the same time. Once that happens, we join hands and do chat about the poem. Says only one person has to say the words, but if you want, I can send the link in the family group chat so we can all say it?" Tim waits to see them consider it, but Cass excited nodding has him copying the link he found on an online forum. A few dings go around the room as everyone checks their phones. "Now we have to decide on a sacrificial offering."
"We should do our most embarrassing secrets," Jason suggests.
"No, no, our fabulous hair!" Dick perks up, flipping said hair in a dramatic flair.
"It has to be something we all share," Tim says, eyeing Duke's short hair.
The other teenager makes an offended noise. "My hair is fabulous!"
"We offer the gay." Cullen cuts in. The rest turn to look at him as he wiggles his fingers. "Ohhhhhh! We're all fruity~! Spooky!"
"Babs isn't," Dick puts in only to see his best friend shake her hand in a so-and-so motion. He gapes at her before throwing his head back and laughing "We really do flock together!"
"So we agree? The gay?" Tim tries to say seriously, but his lips are twitching too much, trying to suppress a smile. There is agreement around the circle. He gives on a single node before passing around the matches Harper had brought. "How are we going to do this, though. Do we just shout, "I'm gay," or are we giving material things?"
"Let's write our gay awakening on a piece of people," Babs suggests grabbing her bag from where it hands on her chair handles. She tucks out a spiral notebook and a few pens. "I read that summoning needs something physical."
Everyone agrees as they pass along the notebook, writing down their awakening. Tim raises a brow at Damian's "Jon Kent" but doesn't call him out for it. After all, Conner Kent goes under his little brother's writing in his own writing.
He does wonder who Danny Fenton is, but knows better than to ask Cass about her life before the manor.
"Okay, let's do this! On the count of three- one-two-three!" Tim calls, watching Damian, Harper, Steph, and Duke simultaneously lite at the candle. They all hold hands, reading off phones that are prompted up by either their legs or kickstands on cases.
"We call upon the Undead King,
The one who bridges the realms,
The one who wields the Ring,
The one who will lead dies and breathes!"
There is a moment of silence where Tim swears he feels a slight shock along his fingertips, but it passes too quickly for him to care. Seeing as he is the ring leader, he calls out to the air. "Oh great King of the Dead, my siblings and I offer you a list of our gay awakening!"
"Stop, stop!" The youngest yells, leaping to his feet. His eyes are wild, scrambling to a far wall like a cornered animal. "No! He's coming!"
"Coming out the closet, like mama, I like boys, I like pecs
Like the arms when they flex!" Stephs suddenly sings, swaying in her seat. Everyone laughs before joining, and Tim wonders if they should have recorded this when suddenly Damian shrieks.
"Damian, who-"
The candles' flames all turn green as a haunting voice echoes through the room. "Your sacrifice has been accepted."
Tim's mouth drops open as the flames rise into the air forming a portal of liquid green. Familiar green. No wonder Daimain had been so scared. That was Lazarus Pit water. This meant this was the real deal, not just a random trend popularized by stupid teenagers.
Leaping Lizards Batman.
"What-what do we do!?" Cullen yelps as a burst of wind rips around the room, throwing everyone back. A laugh that sounds far too much like the Joker is heard through the portal as everyone tries to get into a fighting position with the wind pushing against them.
A head of snow-white hair peaks out and they are greeted by a laughing teenager. "A gay awaking sacrifice list! That's hilarious!"
"Who are you!" Tim hears Jason demand over the howling wings.
Another laugh, but this time, it sounds like clicking ice cubes is a response. "I'm Phantom!"
Tim has a second to see, wide green glowing eyes before the ghost reaches down, snatches their list, and zaps away.
Cass falls to her knees with a look of horror. "They know"
"I told you this was idiotic!" Damian screams, shaking so hard he looks like he will burst into tears in only a few seconds. Dick rushes over to him, pulling the sniffing boy into his arms. "We must never do this again!"
No one knows what to do in the wake of actually succeeding in calling the Ghost King or watching Dmaian cry from fear.
A ringtone plays from Cass's phone, breaking the ill silence. Tim catches a glimpse of "Danny" with two little hearts before his sister grabs the cell and leaps through an open window with what could only be a squeal.
"What the fuck just happened?" Cullen asks, but Tim can only offer him a shrug.

LMAO getting more caught up and I've noticed something interesting about Sun. A trend really
So I just finished the episode "Magic training begins! In VRchat" and his new teacher said they'd teach Sun how to pull magic from everywhere around him.
So he can eventually do magic without a mana pool.
This reminds me, that's exactly what he was taught to do with Star power. He pulls star power in from around him and he then proceeds to manipulate it etc etc.
Something else unique about him is he's Solar powered. One of the only ones implied to have Solar energy. It's why he's able to run on nothing. Why he can avoid charging for literal days on end.
I just want to point out Sun is setting himself up to basically have infinite power. He'll never run out of juice. He can now draw from infinite resources. Draw energy from the literal air around him.
Taurus met Sun and the first thing he noticed is Sun is wreathed in power. He pointed out he was radiating it. The sense I got he didn't even dislike it. What he did dislike was Sun teaching someone else how to use it who proceeded to misuse use it.
As we know, when the Creator wanted to kidnap Lunar it was to use him as a star power battery because unlike Sun who just draws on Star power (rarely tho because he can explode if he holds it too much) Lunar produces it and the Creator wanted that.
Just an interesting observation that Sun can tap into so many volatile power sources. They're all meant to corrupt too, but Sun managed to avoid that. He's this uncorruptible source of strength for the family etc.
I understand that for laes Rez/Res is probably going to move in and do things to Lunar and Earth soon, and they can corrupt things with their power.
🤨
Anyways, remember Dark Sun? Just Sun. He's also using power sources but doesn't show signs of being corrupted by it. He's actually going cross-dimensionsal and made the impossible possible (Omg Sun-core!) by absorbing Star Power in other dimensions. I think he's using the star power to feed his pet dragon but anyways.
Both he and Sun display a learned ability to sense star power and nsp. Sun knew when Nexus showed up in their house and D! Sun told Nexus when to purge his overabundance of nsp. But he also walked away because he mentioned he's basically drowning from the amount of nsp Nexus purged.
Sun also noticed the pressure Taurus exudes similarly to Lunar. So far they're the only two Taurus used his aura/pressure anime intimidation thing on.
Just a thing I noticed.

do you guys want some of my cod 141 headcanons you’re getting them anyways
SOAP
-puts stuff in his mouth a lot to hold it when he runs out of hands (this includes when he’s making explosives, it stresses everyone out)
-gets cute aggression and bites people
-will also bite in a fight
-has bits and pieces of rubble from explosions that he thought looked pretty
-is feral, like he takes a hit to the face during a spar and grins with blood trickling into his mouth
-had a graffiti phase as a teen that never fully left and because of it he writes in all capital letters. this is great when they need something written down where no one can read it. (the 141 probably had a meeting where they went over how to read his handwriting)
-has dreams so realistic he wakes up confused wondering if it was a memory he forgot about even if it didn’t make sense
-military grade anger issues
-never fully grew out of his punk phase
-his childhood room was full of road signs and traffic cones
-is actually a hardass when it comes to training recruits (i think the proper term for privates in the sas is troopers but im calling them recruits cause that seems to be the term everyone uses)(everyone thought his bright attitude meant that he’s laid back and easygoing. no. he’s not. yall ever seen those videos of drill sergeants coming up with the most creative insults? thats him)
-randomly says “i am normal and can be trusted around military grade weapons”
-his journal from the og games is a must in the remaster sorry i don’t make the rules
GHOST
-can play guitar super fucking well, im talking full on fingerstyle ballads
-major staring problem, if he doesn’t want to talk to someone he’ll stare until they go away. sometimes stares at people for no reason. also stares when he wants something. he’s always watching.
-would be interested in getting into blacksmithing if he didn’t grow up poor and hates spending money on himself that isn’t out of necessity (seriously you need like 30k to start a forge)
-can and will obsess over damascus patterns in blades (i feel like his favorite pattern would be fish bone or those really complicated mosaic patterns. he gets soap into it too by showing him fireball patterns)
-never grew out of echolalia and because of this is amazing at mimicking noises (he mimicks smoke alarm battery low noises and phone chimes to troll people sometimes.)
-road rage, but its quiet fuming comments that make you grip the oh shit handle for dear life (“you better turn off your fucking highbeams or i can’t be blamed for the head on collision that’s about to happen”)(no one can tell if he’s serious or not)
-hates tin foil, hearing it or touching it makes him clench his jaw because it feels like he can feel it in his teeth
-secret sweet tooth, but it comes and goes. sometimes he’s disgusted by anything sweeter than white bread and other times he can fuck up an entire box of lil debbie cakes
-can hand sew efficiently and fast as fuck
-his favorite type of blanket is a heavy quilt
GAZ
-is aggressively hydrated and is one of those people who carry around those big 128 oz water bottles
-gets competitive over karaoke (it took him months to convince everyone to join and he only got the idea after finding out soap wanted to be in a band as a teen and that he spent days learning how to properly vocal fry)
-says WOO! when he’s super fucking excited (will throw his arms up as well if soap is around because the two of them are an echo chamber of emotion)(the WOO! might actually be canon theres a voice line in warzone)
-probably the most up to date on modern fashion trends (get this man a long cashmere coat he deserves it)
-he does own a bedazzled cap he found at a gas station though (it’s hideous)
-elaborate skin care routine (he’s conned everyone to have some sort of routine. especially ghost. he got so concerned when it hit him that ghost was always wearing the eyeblack)
PRICE
-listens to black label society (i won’t budge on this its not even a head canon to me anymore its fact it was revealed to me in a dream)
-plays solitaire (he’s a very high level and it took him less than a year to get there. no one knows where he found the time to play for that long)
-drives a manual and shames people who don’t know how to work a stick
-literature nerd (im talking all the classics and philosophy books this man can get his hands on)
-discovered tennessee moonshine and has thought about it ever since
-smacks people on the back of the head when they’re doing something stupid
-if anyone makes a negative comment on his facial hair he gives them the dirtiest side eye
GEN/MULTI
-gaz and soap carry those big contractor waterproof sharpies and leave gaz was here or soap was here everywhere they go (this stemmed from soap’s graffiti phase and gaz turned it into a competition. they once got into a competition on who could leave the most signs until price called them muppets and confiscated their sharpies)
-ghost put soap in air jail once, it was very effective
-gaz and soap go to the gym together and take photos in the mirrors after they’re done (somewhere there’s a photo of the time they got ghost to join and they even got him to flex an arm)
-ghost and soap are professional assholes to each other.
-none of the 141 are allowed play card games and gamble with each other because they’re all dirty charlatans
-price tried to stop smoking only once and carried around gum and peppermints. ghost stole the peppermints and soap wouldn’t stop asking for gum
-gaz and ghost are the only ones who really try to adhere to the lights out rule. price and soap can be seen drinking coffee throughout the day
-all of them can hold a grudge for life
-ghost clears his throat loudly when any of them smoke by him. or stares. depends on the say
-if any of the smokers see another outside smoking and decides to join them it turns into a drawn out conversation about the most mundane topics
-the 141 can have full conversations of pure sarcasm nons

huh yunjin (lyra)~ @ jenifrmtheblock
❀ vocalist and dancer who trained for 4 years before debuting in le sserafim. she’s the ‘middle child’ of her group and the supposed reason for sakura’s grey hairs. yunjin’s the funny one in her group just not to her members because they don’t get her american ass jokes. to fans though she’s the american who’s chronically online and borderline an ipad kid so of course she’s fairly popular. instead of actually addressing her feelings she writes them in songs then never thinks about them again.

miyawaki sakura~ @ifeelbonita
❀ vocalist and dancer who debuted in japan nearly 13 years ago, then in korea around 6 years ago, and again in korea with le sserafim. honestly, she’s just a tired wine mom with 4 kids at this point. she prioritizes taking care of all of her members and sometimes a little more than herself, but that’s something she’s willing to sacrifice if it means her girls are happy. she’s only been in one committed relationship which is a little disjointed right now, tbh she doesn’t even know what’s going on between the two of them. as the oldest member she’s made fun of for being of the loop on nearly every trend but surprises her members every now and again.

❀ leader and vocal who trained for 10 months before her first debut then trained again for about 9 month before debuting in le sserafim. sakura knows her best since they’ve known each other the longest. when it comes to her relationships she has none because she’s the most awkward and dorky mf known to man when a pretty girl comes around…so yeah she has no game. what she does have is a staring problem.

Week in Review
October 23rd-29th
Welcome to Fragile Practice, where I attempt to make something of value out of stuff I have to read.
My future plan is to do longer-form original pieces on interesting topics or trends. For now, I'm going to make the weekly reviews habitual and see if I have any time left.
Technology
OpenAI forms team to study ‘catastrophic’ AI risks, including nuclear threats - Tech Crunch; Kyle Wiggers
OpenAI launched a new research team called AI Safety and Security to investigate the potential harms of artificial intelligence focused on AI alignment, AI robustness, AI governance, and AI ethics.
Note: Same energy as “cigarette company funds medical research into smoking risks”.
Artists Allege Meta’s AI Data Deletion Request Process Is a ‘Fake PR Stunt’ - Wired; Kate Knibbs
Artists who participated in Meta’s Artificial Intelligence Artist Residency Program accused the company of failing to honor their data deletion requests and claim that Meta used their personal data to train its AI models without their consent.
Note: Someday we will stop being surprised that corporate activities without obvious profit motive are all fake PR stunts.
GM and Honda ditch plan to build cheaper electric vehicles - The Verge; Andrew J. Hawkins
General Motors and Honda cancel their joint venture to develop and produce cheaper electric vehicles for the US market, citing the chip shortage, rising costs of battery materials, and the changing market conditions.
Note: What are the odds this isn’t related to the 7 billion dollars the US government announced to create hydrogen hubs.
'AI divide' across the US leaves economists concerned - The Register; Thomas Claburn
A new study by economists from Harvard University and MIT reveals a significant gap in AI adoption and innovation across different regions in the US.
The study finds that AI usage is highest in California's Silicon Valley and the San Francisco Bay Area, but was also noted in Nashville, San Antonio, Las Vegas, New Orleans, San Diego, and Tampa, as well as Riverside, Louisville, Columbus, Austin, and Atlanta.
Nvidia to Challenge Intel With Arm-Based Processors for PCs - Bloomberg; Ian King
Nvidia is using Arm technology to develop CPUs that would challenge Intel processors in PCs, and which could go on sale as soon as 2025.
Note: I am far from an NVIDIA fan, but I’m stoked for any amount of new competition in the CPU space.
New tool lets artists fight AI image bots by hiding corrupt data in plain sight - Engadget; Sarah Fielding
A team at the University of Chicago created Nightshade, a tool that lets artists fight AI image bots by adding undetectable pixels into an image that can alter how a machine-learning model produces content and what that finished product looks like.
Nightshade is intended to protect artists work and has been tested on both Stable Diffusion and an in-house AI built by the researchers.
IBM's NorthPole chip runs AI-based image recognition 22 times faster than current chips - Tech Xplore; Bob Yirka
NorthPole combines the processing module and the data it uses in a two-dimensional array of memory blocks and interconnected CPUs, and is reportedly inspired by the human brain.
NorthPole can currently only run specialized AI processes and not training processes or large language models, but the researchers plan to test connecting multiple chips together to overcome this limitation.
Apple’s $130 Thunderbolt 4 cable could be worth it, as seen in X-ray CT scans - Ars Technica; Kevin Purdy
Note: These scans are super cool. And make me feel somewhat better about insisting on quality cables. A+.
The Shifting Web
On-by-default video calls come to X, disable to retain your sanity - The Register; Brandon Vigliarolo
Video and audio calling is limited to anyone you follow or who is in your address book, if you granted X permission to comb through it.
Calling other users also requires that they’ve sent at least one direct message to you before.
Only premium users can place calls, but everyone can receive them.
Google Search Boss Says Company Invests to Avoid Becoming ‘Roadkill’ - The New York Times; Nico Grant
Google’s senior vice president overseeing search said that he sees a world of threats that could humble his company at any moment.
Google Maps is getting new AI-powered search updates, an enhanced navigation interface and more - Tech Crunch; Aisha Malik
Note: These AI recommender systems are going to be incredibly valuable advertising space. It is interesting that Apple decided to compete with Google in maps but not in basic search, but has so far not placed ads in the search results.
Reddit finally takes its API war where it belongs: to AI companies - Ars Technica; Scharon Harding
Reddit met with generative AI companies to negotiate a deal for being paid for its data, and may block crawlers if no deal is made soon.
Note: Google searches for info on Reddit often seem more effective than searching Reddit itself. If they are unable to make a deal, and Reddit follows through, it will be a legitimate loss for discoverability but also an incredibly interesting experiment to see what Reddit is like without Google.
Bandcamp’s Entire Union Bargaining Team Was Laid Off - 404 Media; Emanuel Maiberg
Bandcamp’s new owner (Songtradr) offered jobs to just half of existing employees, with cuts disproportionately hitting union leaders. Every member of the union’s eight-person bargaining team was laid off, and 40 of the union's 67 members lost their jobs.
Songtradr spokesperson Lindsay Nahmiache claimed that the firm didn’t have access to union membership information.
Note: This just sucks. Bandcamp is rad, and it’s hard to imagine it continuing to be rad after this. I wonder if Epic had ideas for BC that didn’t work out.
Surveillance & Digital Privacy
Mozilla Launches Annual Digital Privacy 'Creep-o-Meter'. This Year's Status: 'Very Creepy' - Slashdot
Mozilla gave the current state of digital privacy a 75.6/100, with 100 being the creepiest.
They measured security features, data collection, and data sharing practices of over 500 gadgets, apps, and cars to come up with their score.
Every car Mozilla tested failed to meet their privacy and security standards.
Note: It would be great if even one auto brand would take privacy seriously.
EPIC Testifies in Support of Massachusetts Data Privacy and Protection Act -Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC)
Massachusetts version of ADPPA.
Note: While it may warm my dead heart to see any online privacy protections in law, scrambling to do so in response to generative AI is unlikely to protect Americans in any meaningful way from the surveillance driven form of capitalism we’ve all been living under for decades.
Complex Spy Platform StripedFly Bites 1M Victims - Dark Reading

Bed rotting: ND kids did it first
Oh boy my first blog post!
A couple months ago I had the Kelly and Mark show on at the waiting room at the urgent care I used to work at. I worked the front desk so I had full view of what was going on before the company I worked at said we apparently need a license to play tv in a medical facility.
Mark and Kelly talked about a Gen Z trend called “bedrotting”. Idk about you but I thought they were going to talk about dying in bed or something.
Nope.
Bed rotting by no formal definition is basically spending time in your bed by choice. Some people doom scroll on their phones, some might watch Netflix and others might do face masks n stuff. I tend to do all of the above.
Gen Z is calling this a form of self care. Now, I’m 26 and was born in 1996. In the words of Brittney Broski “Those born 1994-1998, what are we really?” Which if that’s not the truth idk what is. Am I a millennial or Gen Z? Some charts say one or the other but I like the term Zillennial. So yes in a way I can relate to Gen Z.
I heard Kelly and Mark talk about how it’s a “trend” and as they rambled on about it I realized something.
I’ve been spending my weekends bed rotting since middle school. I would have people make fun of me for it. Like it’s the weekend, I’m a exhausted teenager that is people’d out from the school week and this is the time to rest and recharge. Neurodiverse kids have been bed rotting before it was a “trend”
I find it amazing that something I was picked on and given a hard time about by my peers is now trendy.
Well, I don’t know so much about trendy but they are finding the joy of just kicking back, relaxing and recharging. Even better we are calling it self care because let me tell you, in this fast paced culture we need a break and you can’t be your best when you’re running on a somewhat charged battery.
I work in healthcare as a front desk admin. I would see the patients first and help them get signed in and registered at the urgent care I used to work at. I was very often there alone checking people in, answering the phone, etc. Things would go from 0-100 at any minute. I once had FOUR emergent patients come in at once, thankfully only one of them was truly emergent. Although I’m trained as a medical office admin and have 8 years customer service, it would get though as a ND woman. So after work I basically would change into something comfortable and just browse away on my phone.
yeah that’s what I wanted to talk about today. Take care of yourselves y’all! Happy bed rotting!

Educational Requirements for Enlistment: The Importance of a High School Diploma by Experts at Elite K9
The United States military has long been a cornerstone of national defense, attracting individuals from diverse backgrounds who wish to serve their country. As such, the military maintains specific educational requirements for enlistment, which can often be a point of confusion for potential recruits. Many prospective service members wonder if a high school diploma is a necessary credential for joining the armed forces
In recent years, the military has sought to adapt to changing societal norms and educational trends, leading to a more nuanced understanding of educational qualifications. While a high school diploma has traditionally been viewed as a baseline requirement, there are alternative pathways available for those without this credential. This blog will explore the educational requirements for enlistment in the U.S. military, focusing on the necessity of a high school diploma and the alternatives that exist for aspiring recruits.
The Traditional Requirement: High School Diploma
Historically, a high school diploma has been one of the most fundamental educational requirements for enlistment in the U.S. military. The reasoning behind this standard is clear; a diploma generally signifies that an individual has acquired essential knowledge and skills necessary for military training and service. Experts at Elite K9 mention that the military seeks recruits who can comprehend complex information and follow instructions, making a high school education advantageous.
In practical terms, having a high school diploma often opens the door to more opportunities within the military. For example, individuals with a diploma may have access to a wider array of job positions and advanced training programs. Furthermore, they may be more competitive candidates when it comes to promotions and specialized roles, where a foundational education is essential for success.
Alternative Options: GED and Other Equivalents
For those who have not obtained a high school diploma, the General Educational Development (GED) certificate is a widely accepted alternative. The GED serves as a credential that demonstrates an individual's high school-level knowledge and skills. In fact, many branches of the military accept the GED as meeting the educational requirement for enlistment. This option allows individuals who may have faced challenges in completing high school to still pursue a career in the military.
However, while obtaining a GED can satisfy the basic educational requirement, it is essential to note that some military branches may have different policies regarding the acceptance of GED holders. Additionally, a recruit with a GED may find themselves at a slight disadvantage compared to peers with diplomas, particularly in terms of job opportunities and eligibility for advanced training programs as pointed out by leaders at Elite K9. Therefore, individuals should research the specific requirements of the branch they wish to join.
The Role of ASVAB in Enlistment
The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) is a crucial test that plays a significant role in the enlistment process for the U.S. military. Experts at Elite K9 convey that this standardized test assesses an individual's abilities in various areas, including math, science, reading, and mechanical comprehension. Importantly, ASVAB scores can impact both eligibility for enlistment and the types of job roles available to candidates.
Even for those without a high school diploma or a GED, a high score on the ASVAB can enhance prospects for enlistment. The military uses these scores to determine which roles candidates are best suited for, and higher scores may compensate for the lack of a formal diploma. However, it is worth noting that a good score on the ASVAB will not entirely replace the need for educational qualifications; it merely provides another avenue for candidates to demonstrate their capabilities.
Age and Educational Requirements
Age is another important factor to consider in the context of educational requirements for military enlistment. Generally, candidates must be between 17 and 34 years old to enlist. However, age requirements may vary depending on the specific branch of service. While educational qualifications are essential, age can influence eligibility and the types of programs available for recruits.
For younger candidates, those still in high school may be able to enlist through specific programs that allow them to complete basic training after graduation. This pathway provides an opportunity for motivated individuals to start their military careers early, ensuring they have met educational requirements upon completing high school. In contrast, older candidates who may not have traditional educational credentials can still find pathways to enlist as highlighted by leaders at Elite K9, provided they meet other requirements.
The Importance of Continuous Learning
Continuous learning is vital for anyone considering a career in the military, particularly for those who may not initially meet the educational requirements. The military emphasizes the importance of personal and professional development, encouraging service members to pursue additional education and training throughout their careers. This ongoing commitment to learning helps individuals adapt to new challenges and advances in technology, ensuring that they remain effective in their roles.
Experts at Elite K9 express that many military branches offer educational benefits, such as tuition assistance and the Montgomery GI Bill, which can help service members further their education after enlistment. This support underscores the military's dedication to fostering a culture of lifelong learning. By investing in their education, individuals can not only enhance their skills and career prospects within the military but also prepare themselves for successful transitions to civilian life after their service ends.
Programs for Non-Traditional Students
In recent years, the military has recognized the need to accommodate non-traditional students who may not fit the typical profile of a high school graduate. Various programs have emerged to support individuals who have taken alternative paths to education. For instance, some branches of the military offer programs that allow individuals to earn their high school diplomas while serving.
While a high school diploma remains a traditional requirement for enlistment in the U.S. military, various alternatives exist for those who may not possess this credential. The GED provides a viable pathway, and high ASVAB scores can enhance opportunities for individuals lacking formal educational qualifications. Age and alternative programs also play crucial roles in shaping the eligibility landscape

Industry trend|The University of California has introduced a new type of passive RFID sensor, which was showcased in Hangzhou
In the data-driven future, sensors are seen as a bridge between the physical world and the digital world. However, most traditional sensors rely on batteries for power, which limits their widespread application and real-time sensing capabilities to a certain extent. On November 5, a research team from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of California, San Diego presented their research at the 22nd ACM Conference on Embedded Network Sensor Systems (SenSys 2024) held in Hangzhou, China: Using RFID tags to achieve battery-free sensing, this breakthrough research not only broadens the application range of sensors, but also opens up new paths for the future of data collection.
The core members of the research team include Dinesh Bharadia, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering, and Nagarjun Bhat, a doctoral student in electrical engineering. They found that RFID tags, which are usually used to track inventory or payment card information, actually have great potential and can be repurposed for battery-free sensing and tracking.
The working principle of RFID tags is relatively simple: they receive data from the chip and transmit it to the RFID reader, which processes the information and sends it to a computer program for interpretation. These tags are often embedded in products such as clothing and books, and as the technology becomes more common, up to 90% of retailers are using RFID technology, making the chips widely distributed and easy to obtain.
Bhat and Bharadia's research focuses on using these common RFID tags to achieve passive sensing. Traditional passive sensing methods mostly rely on analog-to-digital converters, which can measure stimuli and convert them into computer-readable digital values, but they consume a lot of power and require additional battery support. Bhat and Bharadia tried to explore a method that does not require a converter and directly uses the chip to sense stimuli.
They found that analog sensing interfaces are the key to solving this problem. Unlike digital interfaces, analog interfaces can directly convert the voltage/current changes generated by sensors into parameters of wireless signals, thereby realizing wireless transmission of data. RFID tags, as commercial, low-cost and easily accessible sensor devices, are ideal for achieving this goal.
Bhat and Bharadia's sensors are not only low-cost, but also have the ability to sense and report stimuli in real time. This means that whether in agricultural management, sports performance indicators or occupancy detection, this battery-free RFID sensor can provide more accurate and timely data support.
For example, in agricultural management, by deploying large-scale soil moisture sensors around the fields, moisture content can be measured remotely and irrigation methods can be adjusted according to current conditions. This not only improves irrigation efficiency but also reduces costs. Similarly, in the field of sports, by embedding RFID sensor tags into the soles of shoes, athletes' sports indicators such as jumping ability can be monitored in real time, providing more accurate data support for training.
In addition, this battery-free RFID sensor also has broad application prospects in areas such as parking lot occupancy detection and environmental monitoring. They can collect a large amount of inaccessible information in real time, providing strong data support for the development of the next generation of artificial intelligence.
Bharadia said: "Artificial intelligence is now everywhere, and it is driven by data provided by sensors. We are on the cusp of a revolution, and new sensors will collect data to power the next generation of artificial intelligence. The use of battery-free sensors allows us to collect a lot of inaccessible information-they can enhance data collection, and this innovation marks a truly important direction for the future."

mitty and moon’s main six ranked by how much they yap except i yapped so hard i just started talking about how they interact with people in general
shanti: this girl is a yapper the same way rottweilers are. she came into this world screaming and by god she'll go out of it that way even if the screaming lands her the best seat in the guillotine house. give her a random wikipedia article title and she'll unleash a rant on the subject with so much passion you'll ignore how 110% of her facts are either 4chan urban legends or bullshit technobabble from the likes of star trek. she'll start every conversation with the word 'also' as though she's been carrying the tête-à-tête (pronounced by her as tit-a-tit, obviously) on through snores alone.
niles: i say this knowing i crafted him to be my ideal male main character — nilesy is god’s most autistic soldier and only acknowledges social cues when they're printed in 12-point courier. he talks more when he's nervous and unfortunately for everyone within the vicinity he is always nervous. about half his words total are apologies for events that were/are/will be absolutely out of his control. this only gets worse when he gets to hollywood because no american high school offers an elective in britishisms. he spends hours every day explaining the etymology of sayings like 'takes the biscuit' with apa citations and only shuts down if he realises he didn't list the citations in alphabetical order.
paisley: the most active listener on the planet. would make symphonies out of sympathetic nods and appropriately flabbergasted gasps regardless of whether she was acting as the audience to teenage gossip or the sealing of the magna carta. has a lot to say herself but won't intentionally steamroll over others to get to her point. speaks just as much with body language. if she's not tapping her feet you should check if she still feels sensation in said feet. if she's not fidgeting with her earrings you should check if she's lost them for the fiftieth time today. it's a very intuitive system.
victoria: a trained yapper. knows every synonym to 'stunning' in existence solely to describe herself. usually expresses herself in emojis, though, and if in truly dire circumstances, emoticons, like the cavepeople of the 1980s. tends to switch topics a lot in quick succession due to instatiktoktube attention span. parrots trends faster than instatiktoktube can produce them. most likely to send a 1,000 word text to the group chat because her pasta arrived slightly south of boiling. least likely to confront anyone in real life about it because she'd prefer a repeat of her cruise ship crashing into an island with an active volcano on it than a playback of her one month stint as a fast food cashier.
addison: also a trained yapper but she's been in the business long enough to be her social battery drains like an iphone set to the brightness of the sun. she opens her mouth for interviews and meals and that's it. and sometimes not even the latter. her mother has told her roughly two things regarding the subject of yapping: if she starts yapping, she will start complaining; if she starts complaining, she will start being unattractive to men. her mother was only right about the first part.
hanna: treats talking like a 9-5 and has been bargaining with everyone around her to fire her from the position of cardboard chatterbox for eternity. shanti's known her since first grade and last heard her say a non-scripted sentence over ten words in second grade. she knows little more than fingerspelling in sign language but in true theatre kid fashion her hands have done more talking than the president ever will. which president? all of them. in the history of the universe.
