Cambron Covered Bridge on Madison County Nature Trail near Huntsville, Alabama

Framed here for the season by fall foliage, the Cambron Covered Bridge is located along a nature trail in Madison County, *Alabama*—not Iowa, which is the setting of the bestselling romance novel 'The Bridges of Madison County.' It's believed there were once about 14,000 covered bridges in the US, but fewer than 900 or so remain today, a quarter of which can be found in Pennsylvania. But Alabama has covered-bridge bragging rights, too. The state has 11 historic covered bridges. Built in 1974, the Cambron Covered Bridge doesn't make the official 'historic' list, but it does offer hikers a peaceful passageway with great views of Sky Lake.

NASA's mini BurstCube mission detects mega blast
The shoebox-sized BurstCube satellite has observed its first gamma-ray burst, the most powerful kind of explosion in the universe, according to a recent analysis of observations collected over the last several months.
“We’re excited to collect science data,” said Sean Semper, BurstCube’s lead engineer at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. “It’s an important milestone for the team and for the many early career engineers and scientists that have been part of the mission.”
The event, called GRB 240629A, occurred on June 29 in the southern constellation Microscopium. The team announced the discovery in a GCN (General Coordinates Network) circular on August 29.
BurstCube deployed into orbit April 18 from the International Space Station, following a March 21 launch.
The mission was designed to detect, locate, and study short gamma-ray bursts, brief flashes of high-energy light created when superdense objects like neutron stars collide. These collisions also produce heavy elements like gold and iodine, an essential ingredient for life as we know it.
BurstCube is the first CubeSat to use NASA’s TDRS (Tracking and Data Relay Satellite) system, a constellation of specialized communications spacecraft. Data relayed by TDRS (pronounced “tee-driss”) help coordinate rapid follow-up measurements by other observatories in space and on the ground through NASA’s GCN.
BurstCube also regularly beams data back to Earth using the Direct to Earth system — both it and TDRS are part of NASA’s Near Space Network.
After BurstCube deployed from the space station, the team discovered that one of the two solar panels failed to fully extend. It obscures the view of the mission’s star tracker, which hinders orienting the spacecraft in a way that minimizes drag. The team originally hoped to operate BurstCube for 12-18 months, but now estimates the increased drag will cause the satellite to re-enter the atmosphere in September.
“I’m proud of how the team responded to the situation and is making the best use of the time we have in orbit,” said Jeremy Perkins, BurstCube’s principal investigator at Goddard. “Small missions like BurstCube not only provide an opportunity to do great science and test new technologies, like our mission’s gamma-ray detector, but also important learning opportunities for the up-and-coming members of the astrophysics community.”
BurstCube is led by Goddard. It’s funded by the Science Mission Directorate’s Astrophysics Division at NASA Headquarters. The BurstCube collaboration includes: the University of Alabama in Huntsville; the University of Maryland, College Park; the Universities Space Research Association in Washington; the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington; and NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville.

Blog 5 - Free Prompt: Ode to Muskoka (a letter to my favourite outdoor place)🌲🪵
Where do I start!?
There aren’t enough words to express how I feel about Muskoka. It’s truly a place of endless possibilities. It’s an outdoor wonderland for adventure and relaxation. For some context, my parents moved up there in 2019, and it has easily become my favourite place in the world. I look forward to returning home from uni next Friday to spend reading week up there, which got me thinking. So, I thought I’d write a little ode to Muskoka for my weekly post this time.
Dear Muskoka,
You have been so much more than just a place on a map to me. You’ve been my home, my escape, my adventure, and my comfort all at once. From my earliest memories upon moving there in 2019, to now in 2025, you have shaped me in ways I’m only just beginning to understand.
I know you best through your lakes and rivers. Cold! and endless, with ripples catching the last light of day. I know you also through the tall, windswept, white pines that tower above me like they hold all the secrets of time. You have taught me beauty in stillness. In mornings spent sitting on the dock, feet above the water, sipping a coffee, the world quiet except for the sounds of nature awakening for the day.
More so, you’ve taught me to love the cold. I used to see winter as something to be waited out … like a season of stillness. Frozen lakes and barren trees. But you showed me its’ magic. You turned cold into comfort.
Tumblr media
This is a photo my mom sent me in early December (2024). It was taken from across the road at our house. Bracebridge went on to receive a total of 125cm of snow and entered into a state of emergency that week (I’m sure a lot of you might’ve heard about that). Crazy times!
Muskoka is no stranger to feet upon feet of snow, and -25 (C) temperatures. I’ve learned that it’s a choice how I perceive that. I can choose to view it as a nuisance and a burden, and tuck myself away to hibernate. OR I can choose to see the beauty and endless possibilities for activities in nature.
Muskoka, you made me crave the solitude of winter trails, where the only footprints are my own, where the pines seem to hold their breath, and where the world feels endless in its quiet. I love the warmth that comes after a long day outside. With my cheeks flushed, legs aching, and lungs full of the purest air. It’s a sense of contentment I can’t find anywhere else.
I don’t count the days until the ice melts and the lakes ripple freely anymore. I am content in the cold. I have patience in the way the seasons change now. There is a deep hush in February, where the world seems to slow, and I can simply be. Muskoka, you have given me winter.
No matter how far I go, I always find myself thinking of you. There is no place like home after all.
So thank you. For the sunsets that have made me pause, for the trails that let me breathe, for the ice-cold swims that make me feel alive. For being the one place that always feels like a part of me, no matter where I end up.
See you on the winter break (reading week), Muskoka! 🌨️
Since a picture is worth a thousand words, here are some of my favourites from time-spent visiting home in Muskoka this past year:

❧ Name: Jacob Abraham Müller ❧ Nickname: Jake ❧ Age: 25 ❧ Gender: Cis man, he/him ❧ Orientation: Bisexual ❧ Relationship: Dating Ferdie Weaver ❧ Occupation: Stable Manager ❧ Residence: Commune ❧ Title: The Rancher ❧ Faceclaim: Rudy Pankow
❧ Personality -
Dedicated / Kind / Empathetic / Honest Single-minded / Stubborn / Avoidant / Dismissive
❧ Introduction -
Jake’s father came from old money in the horse trade. Starting in Germany, they bred and trained and sold show horses all over the world. Jake fell in love with the horses on his family’s estate, as he felt they understood him better than his own parents. They wanted him raised to be the heir of the company, to follow in his father’s footsteps and continue the legacy and wealth. Unfortunately for them, Jake didn’t care about any of that. Because of the isolation, his only friends were the horses.
He understood that he would need to take over at some point, probably, so he did go to college for business to appease his father’s annoyance. But he dreamed of opening and operating a horse ranch in the Australian Outback.
It was in college that he remet Ferdinand Weaver. The two had hooked up only a couple years before in a one night stand, and they struck up a friendship which turned into a relationship.
It was Jake’s fault that he, Ferdie, and three of their friends ended up in Huntsville. He wanted to take them on a horse trail through the Appalacians to get to their camping site on the other end. He brought five of his favorite horses (Zena, Rainier, Jake from State Farm, Hey Jude, and Swaps), and led them straight into Huntsville on horseback.
He isn’t sure how to make it up to them, but he set up a stable near town to board his five horses, along with anyone else who might have need for boarding. He has help from his stablehands, Jovi DiCamillo and Ian Dutton, to take care of the horses, and Jake rents them out to help whoever needs them.

(Hunter Parrish) [THE FAWN]. Please welcome [ADDISON GALLAGHER (THEY/HE)] to Huntsville, WV. They are an [33]-year-old [VISITOR] who lives in [THE COMMUNE]. You may see them around working as a [GRAVE DIGGER]. Poor unfortunate soul. We’ll see if they survive.
Full Name: Addison Connor Gallagher Birthday: January 29 Age: 33 Hunter or Gatherer: Gatherer Sexuality: Pansexual Height: 5'10 Relationship Status: In an open relationship with Cole Cerulli
Life for Addison was absolutely perfect, if you asked them - at least for the first six years of his life. While they were something of a surprise to their parents, they were showered with love and affection since their older brother, Tricky, didn't really want any of that, as far as Addison could tell. He was spoiled absolutely rotten, and he loved it - unfortunately it also meant that he was constantly seeking validation in the form of attention and affection.
There was no one else in the whole world Addison loved the way they loved Tricky. They were like a little shadow, trailing after him every minute of the day - except when Tricky snapped and slammed his door in their face. Addison was sensitive, and cried often, but was coddled by their mother, so it seemed almost acceptable. When Tricky decided to join the Marines when Addison was eight, they didn't think their heart would ever be full again.
Extremely popular in school, Addison had no shortage of friends. They were also extremely musically inclined, picking up instruments easily. They favored the guitar, but was also good at piano and not terrible at most woodwind instruments. Between friends and music lessons and his parents, Addison was constantly surrounded by love and attention, which made it easy to forget about how much he missed Tricky for periods of time.
When Tricky returned from his first tour, Addison knew right away something had changed. Maybe that was normal - they didn't know anyone else who had been sent overseas to fight. Tricky was moody, and sullen, and rarely spoke to Addison which was still very hard for him, but they tried to put on a brave face anyway, still doing their very best to spend as much time as Tricky would allow them to with their big brother.
High school was a whole new world for Addison, and it's where figuring out their sexuality and gender came into play. They discovered very early on that while monogamy was great for some people, Addison just had too much love to give as a whole and often preferred to just date around casually because there was no guarantee they wouldn't inadvertently fall in love with someone the next week.
When Tricky decided to move closer to his friends, Addison begged, near tears, to please be allowed to come with. It was hard enough when Tricky was deployed; the idea that he would move away forever and never have a move back date made Addison want to throw up. And Tricky resigned to it, which thrilled the younger Gallagher.
Moving wasn't the problem - the problem was Huntsville. Being trapped in the town had a comfort in and of itself - Tricky could never, ever leave Addison again. However, it became quite apparent that the two couldn't live together harmoniously because Addison needed so much attention, and Tricky didn't have the time or attention to give. So Addison moved into the commune, despite still having a room at Tricky's place, to keep their relationship in tact.
Doe eyed and naïve is one of the best ways to describe Addison - while they love living in the commune and have made a great life for themselves with what they have, it's extremely easy to convince them of whatever you want. They're sweet, and loyal, but never make them choose between Tricky and anything else because the answer will always be Tricky (even if they're more than sure Tricky doesn't feel the same way.) They don't blame him for bringing them to Huntsville - they wanted to be here - and while the creatures are terrifying, it would be more terrifying to be stuck out in the regular world and never know what happened to their brother.
A creative, and a dreamer, it's not unusual to find Addison outside without any shoes on or strumming their guitar somewhere, a golden retriever like excitement following their greeting. They're still extremely open with their ideas of love and sleeping around, but genuinely cares for everyone they say is their friend because they're just a soft, loving soul underneath it all.

Please welcome [CHARLES "CHAZ" JACKSON (HE/HIM)] to Huntsville, WV. They are a [50]-year-old [VISITOR] who lives in [TOWN]. You may see them around working as a [PRIVATE DETECTIVE]. Poor unfortunate soul. We’ll see if they survive.
Name: Charles Jackson Nickname: Chaz Face Claim: Idris Elba Age: 50 Gender/Pronouns: Cis Male, he/him Orientation: Asexual Residence: Town Occupation: Private Detective Role: Gatherer Title: The Pragmatist
Personality:
+ Stalwart, Protective, Driven - Cynical, Brusque, Pushy
Backstory: tw: death, abuse, neglect, alcoholism Chaz was born in east London. His mother sadly died in childbirth and his father, blaming the boy for the loss, treated him badly as he more often than not retreated into a bottle. This led Chaz to try and get away from home as much as possible, spending time on the rough streets and falling in with a gang. Then, when he was barely a teen, his father disappeared for good, leaving Chaz with no one except the gang, and he completely gave himself up to their lifestyle, assuming he would never amount to anything else. But deep down, he hated living on the wrong side of the law. Then, some years later, he was finally arrested, and assumed he would have to spend the rest of his days in prison. But the judge who laid down his sentence was merciful, and he only had to spend a few months in jail. When he was released, Chaz swore he would turn his life around, and as it turned out, one of the detectives who had arrested him had seen the young man's potential, and offered him a chance to join the police academy. Chaz took the offer, joined the academy and excelled, eventually working his way up to being a detective. He did excellent work for Scotland Yard, especially working with other troubled youth like himself from the same streets where he grew up, hoping to help others turn their lives around like he had. Eventually, he was selected to work in a partnership with the NYPD, and was sent to New York to be a consulting detective. While Chaz had to adjust to the new situation, he soon threw himself into work in New York just as well as he had in London. During this time was when he met Kai, who Chaz identified with a great deal, and in whom he saw much potential. He took Kai on as his protégé and taught him how to become a private detective, and the two soon became very close, as the young man became the closest thing to family Chaz had ever had. Until, that is, he unexpectedly discovered he had a half-brother. When Chaz's father left England, he came to America, and fathered another child, Isaiah. Chaz was both shaken and unsure what to think about his brother, but he was willing to try and forge a bond with him. Isaiah, on the other hand, resented Chaz, and saw in him everything that he hated about their father. He swore he would not ever call his half-brother family, yet Chaz has continued to hope to eventually mend that fence. Some time after this uneasy reunion, Chaz was assigned to a missing persons case, one in which the person had apparently disappeared in West Virginia. Taking up the case, he went to investigate, and the search led him to a fork in a road, near a place called Huntsville. This was six months ago. Now stuck in town, Chaz has been trying to lend his detective skills in any way he can, whether to help out people in town or to try and unravel the mystery they all have found themselves in. Little did he know, however, that not one but two people connected to him were both trailing him on his journey, and now have become stuck in Huntsville along with him.

THIS IS A PIVOTING POINT IN HISTORY
IT SHOW WHAT A BLACK COMMUNITY CAN DO GIVEN THE CHANCE
AND
WHAT A WHITE COMMUNITY CAN DO GIVEN A CHANCE
WE MUST LEARN FROM HISTORY AND ACT ON THE KNOWLEGE TO IMPROVE OR CONTINUE TO LIVE WITH THE DAMAGES IN THE WORST WAY.
One hundred years ago on May 31, 1921, and into the next day, a white mob destroyed Tulsa’s burgeoning Greenwood District, known as the “Black Wall Street,” in what experts call the single-most horrific incident of racial terrorism since slavery.
HOW BLACK WALL STREET STARTED
A BLACK MAN’S DREAM WHO UNDERSTOOD THE POWER OF THE BLACK DOLLAR IN A BLACK COMMUNITY-
IT WAS BLACK ON BLACK DIME NOT CRIME
Tumblr media
O.W. Gurley, a wealthy Black landowner, purchased 40 acres of land in Tulsa in 1906 and named the area Greenwood. Its population stemmed largely from formerly enslaved Black people and sharecroppers who relocated to the area fleeing the racial terror they experienced in other areas.
O. W. Gurley (born Ottaway W. Gurley; December 25, 1867 – August 6, 1935) was once one of the wealthiest Black men and a founder of the Greenwood district in Tulsa, Oklahoma, known as "Black Wall Street"
Gurley was born in Huntsville, Alabama to John and Rosanna Gurley, formerly enslaved persons, and grew up in Pine Bluff, Arkansas.  After attending public schools and self-educating he worked as a teacher and in the postal service.  While living in Pine Bluff, Gurley married Emma Wells, on November 6, 1889. They had no children.
In 1889, he came to what was then known as Indian Territory to participate in the Oklahoma Land Rush, staking a claim in what would be known as Perry, Oklahoma. The young entrepreneur had just resigned from an appointment under president Grover Cleveland in order to strike out on his own. In Perry he rose quickly, running unsuccessfully for treasurer of Noble County at first, but later becoming principal at the town’s school and eventually starting and operating a general store for 10 years.
Greenwood District
In 1905, Gurley sold his store and land in Perry and moved with his wife, Emma, to the oil boomtown of Tulsa, where he purchased 40 acres of land which was "only to be sold to colored. The first law passed in the new State of Oklahoma, 33 days after statehood, set in place a Jim Crow system of legally enforced segregation, and required blacks and whites to live in separate areas.
However, Oklahoma was considered a significant economic and social opportunity by Gurley, politician Edward P. McCabe and others, leading to the establishment of 50 all-black towns and settlements, among the highest of any state or territory.
Among Gurley's first businesses was a rooming house which was located on a dusty trail near the railroad tracks. This road was given the name Greenwood Avenue, named for a city in Mississippi. The area became very popular among black migrants fleeing the oppression in Mississippi.
They would find refuge in Gurley's building, as the racial persecution from the south was non-existent on Greenwood Avenue. On the contrary, Greenwood was later dubbed Black Wall Street as it became increasingly self-sustained and catered to upwardly mobile Black people] Gurley also provided monetary loans to Black people wanting to start their own businesses.
In addition to his rooming house, Gurley built three two-story buildings and five residences and bought an 80-acre (32 ha) farm in Rogers County. Gurley also founded what is today Vernon AME Church He also helped build a black Masonic lodge and an employment agency.
This implementation of "colored" segregation set the Greenwood boundaries of separation that still exist:

Gurley formed an informal partnership with another Black American entrepreneur, J.B. Stradford, who arrived in Tulsa in 1899, and they developed Greenwood in concert. In 1914, Gurley's net worth was reported to be $150,000 (about $3 million in 2018 dollars). And he was made a sheriff's deputy by the city of Tulsa to police Greenwood's residents, which resulted in some viewing him with suspicion.
By 1921, Gurley owned more than one hundred properties in Greenwood and had an estimated net worth between $500,000 and $1 million (between $6.8 million and $13.6 million in 2018 dollars). Gurley's prominence and wealth were short lived, and his position as a sheriff's deputy did not protect him during the race massacre. In a matter of moments, he lost everything
During the race massacre, The Gurley Hotel at 112 N. Greenwood, the street's first commercial enterprise as well as the Gurley family home, valued at $55,000, was lost, and with it Brunswick Billiard Parlor and Dock Eastmand & Hughes Cafe. Gurley also owned a two-story building at 119 N. Greenwood. It housed Carter's Barbershop, Hardy Rooms, a pool hall, and cigar store. All were reduced to ruins. By his account and court records, he lost nearly $200,000 in the 1921 race massacre
Because of his leadership role in creating this self-sustaining exclusive black "enclave," it has been rumored that Gurley was lynched by a white mob and buried in an unmarked grave. However, according to the memoirs of Greenwood pioneer, B.C. Franklin, Gurley left Greenwood for Los Angeles, California.
O.W  Gurley and his wife, Emma, moved to a 4-bedroom home in South Los Angeles and ran a small hotel. Gurley died from arteriosclerosis and a cerebral hemorrhage, in Los Angeles, California, on August 6, 1935, at the age of 67. His widow Emma passed away three years later, in 1938. (Source: Wikipedia)

A bridge from Alabama Framed here for the season by fall foliage, the Cambron Covered Bridge is located along a nature trail in Green Mountain Park in Madison County, Alabama. It's believed there were once about 14,000 covered bridges in the U.S., but fewer than 900 or so remain today, a quarter of which can be found in Pennsylvania. But Alabama has covered-bridge bragging rights, too. This American state has 11 historic covered bridges. Built in 1974, the Cambron Covered Bridge doesn't make the official 'historic' list, but it does offer hikers a peaceful passageway with great views of Sky Lake.

Alabama can boast 11 historic covered bridges of its own, however. This one, built in 1974, might not make the official 'historic' list but it’s certainly eye-catching and offers hikers a peaceful passageway with great views of the lake in Green Mountain Park.

W. C. Handy
Tumblr media
William Christopher Handy (November 16, 1873 – March 28, 1958) was a composer and musician who referred to himself as the Father of the Blues. Handy was one of the most influential songwriters in the United States. One of many musicians who played the distinctively American blues music, Handy did not create the blues genre but was the first to publish music in the blues form, thereby taking the blues from a regional music style (Delta blues) with a limited audience to a new level of popularity.
Handy was an educated musician who used elements of folk music in his compositions. He was scrupulous in documenting the sources of his works, which frequently combined stylistic influences from various performers.
Early life
Handy was born in Florence, Alabama, the son of Elizabeth Brewer and Charles Barnard Handy. His father was the pastor of a small church in Guntersville, a small town in northeast central Alabama. Handy wrote in his 1941 autobiography, Father of the Blues, that he was born in a log cabin built by his grandfather William Wise Handy, who became an African Methodist Episcopal minister after the Emancipation Proclamation. The log cabin of Handy's birth has been preserved near downtown Florence.
Handy's father believed that musical instruments were tools of the devil. Without his parents' permission, Handy bought his first guitar, which he had seen in a local shop window and secretly saved for by picking berries and nuts and making lye soap. Upon seeing the guitar, his father asked him, "What possessed you to bring a sinful thing like that into our Christian home?" and ordered him to "take it back where it came from", but he also arranged for his son to take organ lessons. The organ lessons did not last long, but Handy moved on to learn to play the cornet. He joined a local band as a teenager, but he kept this fact a secret from his parents. He purchased a cornet from a fellow band member and spent every free minute practicing it.
While growing up, he apprenticed in carpentry, shoemaking, and plastering. He was deeply religious. His musical style was influenced by the church music he sang and played in his youth and by the sounds of nature. He cited as inspiration the "whippoorwills, bats and hoot owls and their outlandish noises", Cypress Creek washing on the fringes of the woodland, and "the music of every songbird and all the symphonies of their unpremeditated art".
He worked on a "shovel brigade" at the McNabb furnace and described the music made by the workers as they beat shovels, altering the tone while thrusting and withdrawing the metal part against the iron buggies to pass the time while waiting for the overfilled furnace to digest its ore. He called the sound "better to us than the music of a martial drum corps, and our rhythms were far more complicated." He wrote, "Southern Negroes sang about everything...They accompany themselves on anything from which they can extract a musical sound or rhythmical effect." He would later reflect, "In this way, and from these materials, they set the mood for what we now call blues".
Career
In September 1892, Handy travelled to Birmingham, Alabama, to take a teaching exam. He passed it easily and gained a teaching job at the Teachers Agriculture and Mechanical College (the current-day Alabama A&M University) in Normal, then an independent community near Huntsville. Learning that it paid poorly, he quit the position and found employment at a pipe works plant in nearby Bessemer.
In his time off from his job, he organized a small string orchestra and taught musicians how to read music. He later organized the Lauzetta Quartet. When the group read about the upcoming World's Fair in Chicago, they decided to attend. To pay their way, they performed odd jobs along the way. They arrived in Chicago only to learn that the World's Fair had been postponed for a year. Next they headed to St. Louis, Missouri, but found no work.
After the quartet disbanded, Handy went to Evansville, Indiana. He played the cornet in the Chicago World's Fair in 1893. In Evansville, he joined a successful band that performed throughout neighboring cities and states. His musical endeavors were varied: he sang first tenor in a minstrel show, worked as a band director, choral director, cornetist, and trumpeter. At the age of 23, he became the bandmaster of Mahara's Colored Minstrels.
In a three-year tour they traveled to Chicago, throughout Texas and Oklahoma to Tennessee, Georgia, and Florida, and on to Cuba, Mexico and Canada. Handy was paid a salary of $6 per week. Returning from Cuba the band traveled north through Alabama, where they stopped to perform in Huntsville. Weary of life on the road, he and his wife, Elizabeth, stayed with relatives in his nearby hometown of Florence.
In 1896, while performing at a barbecue in Henderson, Kentucky, Handy met Elizabeth Price. They married on July 19, 1896. She gave birth to Lucille, the first of their six children, on June 29, 1900, after they had settled in Florence.
Around that time, William Hooper Councill, the president of what had become the Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical College for Negroes (the same college Handy had refused to teach at in 1892 due to low pay), hired Handy to teach music. He became a faculty member in September 1900 and taught through much of 1902. He was disheartened to discover that the college emphasized teaching European music considered to be "classical". He felt he was underpaid and could make more money touring with a minstrel group.
In 1902 Handy traveled throughout Mississippi, listening to various styles of popular black music. The state was mostly rural and music was part of the culture, especially in cotton plantations in the Mississippi Delta. Musicians usually played guitar or banjo or, to a much lesser extent, piano. Handy's remarkable memory enabled him to recall and transcribe the music he heard in his travels.
After a dispute with AAMC President Councill, Handy resigned his teaching position to return to the Mahara Minstrels and tour the Midwest and Pacific Northwest. In 1903 he became the director of a black band organized by the Knights of Pythias in Clarksdale, Mississippi. Handy and his family lived there for six years. In 1903, while waiting for a train in Tutwiler, in the Mississippi Delta, Handy had the following experience:
A lean loose-jointed Negro had commenced plunking a guitar beside me while I slept...As he played, he pressed a knife on the strings of the guitar in a manner popularized by Hawaiian guitarists who used steel bars...The singer repeated the line three times, accompanying himself on the guitar with the weirdest music I had ever heard.
About 1905, while playing a dance in Cleveland, Mississippi, Handy was given a note asking for "our native music". He played an old-time Southern melody but was asked if a local colored band could play a few numbers. Three young men with a battered guitar, mandolin, and a worn-out bass walked onto the stage. Research by Elliott Hurwitt for the Mississippi Blues Trail identified the leader of the band in Cleveland as Prince McCoy.
They struck up one of those over and over strains that seem to have no beginning and certainly no ending at all. The strumming attained a disturbing monotony, but on and on it went, a kind of stuff associated with [sugar] cane rows and levee camps. Thump-thump-thump went their feet on the floor. It was not really annoying or unpleasant. Perhaps "haunting" is the better word.
Handy noted square dancing by Mississippi blacks with "one of their own calling the figures, and crooning all of his calls in the key of G." He remembered this when deciding on the key of "Saint Louis Blues". "It was the memory of that old gent who called figures for the Kentucky breakdown—the one who everlastingly pitched his tones in the key of G and moaned the calls like a presiding elder preaching at a revival meeting. Ah, there was my key—I'd do the song in G. In describing "blind singers and footloose bards" around Clarksdale, Handy wrote, "surrounded by crowds of country folks, they would pour their hearts out in song...They earned their living by selling their own songs — "ballets," as they called them — and I'm ready to say in their behalf that seldom did their creations lack imagination.
In 1909 Handy and his band moved to Memphis, Tennessee, where they played in clubs on Beale Street. "The Memphis Blues" was a campaign song written for Edward Crump, a Democrat Memphis mayoral candidate in the 1909 election and political boss. The other candidates also employed Black musicians for their campaigns. Handy later rewrote the tune and changed its name from "Mr. Crump" to "Memphis Blues." The 1912 publication of the sheet music of "The Memphis Blues" introduced his style of 12-bar blues; it was credited as the inspiration for the foxtrot by Vernon and Irene Castle, a New York dance team. Handy sold the rights to the song for $100. By 1914, when he was 40, he had established his musical style, his popularity had greatly increased, and he was a prolific composer. Handy wrote about using folk songs:
The primitive southern Negro, as he sang, was sure to bear down on the third and seventh tone of the scale, slurring between major and minor. Whether in the cotton field of the Delta or on the Levee up St. Louis way, it was always the same. Till then, however, I had never heard this slur used by a more sophisticated Negro, or by any white man. I tried to convey this effect...by introducing flat thirds and sevenths (now called blue notes) into my song, although its prevailing key was major...and I carried this device into my melody as well...This was a distinct departure, but as it turned out, it touched the spot.
The three-line structure I employed in my lyric was suggested by a song I heard Phil Jones sing in Evansville ... While I took the three-line stanza as a model for my lyric, I found its repetition too monotonous...Consequently I adopted the style of making a statement, repeating the statement in the second line, and then telling in the third line why the statement was made.
Regarding the "three-chord basic harmonic structure" of the blues, Handy wrote that the "(tonic, subdominant, dominant seventh) was that already used by Negro roustabouts, honky-tonk piano players, wanderers and others of the underprivileged but undaunted class from Missouri to the Gulf, and had become a common medium through which any such individual might express his personal feeling in a sort of musical soliloquy." He noted, "In the folk blues the singer fills up occasional gaps with words like 'Oh, lawdy' or 'Oh, baby' and the like. This meant that in writing a melody to be sung in the blues manner one would have to provide gaps or waits."
Writing about the first time "Saint Louis Blues" was played, in 1914, Handy said,
The one-step and other dances had been done to the tempo of Memphis Blues. ... When St Louis Blues was written the tango was in vogue. I tricked the dancers by arranging a tango introduction, breaking abruptly into a low-down blues. My eyes swept the floor anxiously, then suddenly I saw lightning strike. The dancers seemed electrified. Something within them came suddenly to life. An instinct that wanted so much to live, to fling its arms to spread joy, took them by the heels.
His published musical works were groundbreaking because of his ethnicity. In 1912, he met Harry Pace at the Solvent Savings Bank in Memphis. Pace was the valedictorian of his graduating class at Atlanta University and a student of W. E. B. Du Bois. By the time of their meeting, Pace had already demonstrated a strong understanding of business. He earned his reputation by saving failing businesses. Handy liked him, and Pace later became the manager of Pace and Handy Sheet Music.
While in New York City, Handy wrote:
I was under the impression that these Negro musicians would jump at the chance to patronize one of their own publishers. They didn't...The Negro musicians simply played the hits of the day...They followed the parade. Many white bands and orchestra leaders, on the other hand, were on the alert for novelties. They were therefore the ones most ready to introduce our numbers. Negro vaudeville artists...wanted songs that would not conflict with white acts on the bill. The result was that these performers became our most effective pluggers.
In 1917, he and his publishing business moved to New York City, where he had offices in the Gaiety Theatre office building in Times Square. By the end of that year, his most successful songs had been published: "Memphis Blues", "Beale Street Blues", and "Saint Louis Blues". That year the Original Dixieland Jazz Band, a white New Orleans jazz ensemble, had recorded the first jazz record, introducing the style to a wide segment of the American public. Handy had little fondness for jazz, but bands dove into his repertoire with enthusiasm, making many of them jazz standards.
Handy encouraged performers such as Al Bernard, "a young white man" with a "soft Southern accent" who "could sing all my Blues". He sent Bernard to Thomas Edison to be recorded, which resulted in "an impressive series of successes for the young artist, successes in which we proudly shared." Handy also published "Shake Rattle and Roll" and "Saxophone Blues", both written by Bernard. "Two young white ladies from Selma, Alabama (Madelyn Sheppard and Annelu Burns) contributed the songs "Pickaninny Rose" and "O Saroo", with the music published by Handy's company. These numbers, plus our blues, gave us a reputation as publishers of Negro music."
Expecting to make only "another hundred or so" of "Yellow Dog Blues" (originally entitled "Yellow Dog Rag"), Handy signed a deal with the Victor company. The Joe Smith recording of this song in 1919 became the best-selling recording of Handy's music to date.
Handy tried to interest black women singers in his music but was unsuccessful. In 1920 Perry Bradford persuaded Mamie Smith to record two of his non-blues songs ("That Thing Called Love" and "You Can't Keep a Good Man Down") that were published by Handy and accompanied by a white band. When Bradford's "Crazy Blues" became a hit as recorded by Smith, black blues singers became popular. Handy's business began to decrease because of the competition.
In 1920 Pace amicably dissolved his partnership with Handy, with whom he also collaborated as lyricist. Pace formed Pace Phonograph Company and Black Swan Records and many of the employees went with him. Handy continued to operate the publishing company as a family-owned business. He published works of other black composers as well as his own, which included more than 150 sacred compositions and folk song arrangements and about 60 blues compositions. In the 1920s, he founded the Handy Record Company in New York City; while this label released no records, Handy organized recording sessions with it, and some of those recordings were eventually released on Paramount Records and Black Swan Records. So successful was "Saint Louis Blues" that in 1929 he and director Dudley Murphy collaborated on a RCA motion picture of the same name, which was to be shown before the main attraction. Handy suggested blues singer Bessie Smith for the starring role because the song had made her popular. The movie was filmed in June and was shown in movie houses throughout the United States from 1929 to 1932.
In 1926 Handy wrote Blues: An Anthology—Complete Words and Music of 53 Great Songs. It is an early attempt to record, analyze, and describe the blues as an integral part of the South and the history of the United States. To celebrate the publication of the book and to honor Handy, Small's Paradise in Harlem hosted a party, "Handy Night", on Tuesday October 5, which contained the best of jazz and blues selections provided by Adelaide Hall, Lottie Gee, Maude White, and Chic Collins.
In a 1938 radio episode of Ripley's Believe it or not! Handy was described as "the father of jazz as well as the blues." Fellow blues performer Jelly Roll Morton wrote an open letter to Downbeat magazine fuming that he had actually invented jazz.
After the publication of his autobiography, Handy published a book on African-American musicians, Unsung Americans Sung (1944). He wrote three other books: Blues: An Anthology: Complete Words and Music of 53 Great Songs, Book of Negro Spirituals, and Negro Authors and Composers of the United States. He lived on Strivers' Row in Harlem. He became blind after an accidental fall from a subway platform in 1943. After the death of his first wife, he remarried in 1954 when he was 80. His bride was his secretary, Irma Louise Logan, who he frequently said had become his eyes. In 1955, he suffered a stroke, after which he began to use a wheelchair. More than eight hundred attended his 84th birthday party at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel.
On March 28, 1958, Handy died of bronchial pneumonia at Sydenham Hospital in New York City Over 25,000 people attended his funeral in Harlem's Abyssinian Baptist Church. Over 150,000 people gathered in the streets near the church to pay their respects. He was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx.

Handy's music does not always follow the classic 12-bar pattern, often having 8- or 16-bar bridges between 12-bar verses.
"Memphis Blues", written 1909, published 1912. Although usually subtitled "Boss Crump", it is a distinct song from Handy's campaign satire, "Boss Crump don't 'low no easy riders around here", which was based on the good-time song "Mamma Don't Allow It."
"Yellow Dog Blues" (1912), "Your easy rider's gone where the Southern cross the Yellow Dog." The reference is to the crossing at Moorhead, Mississippi, of the Southern Railway and the local Yazoo and Mississippi Valley Railroad, called the Yellow Dog. By Handy's telling locals assigned the words "Yellow Dog" to the letters Y.D. (for Yazoo Delta) on the freight trains that they saw.
"Saint Louis Blues" (1914), "the jazzman's Hamlet."
"Loveless Love", based in part on the classic "Careless Love". Possibly the first song to complain of modern synthetics, "with milkless milk and silkless silk, we're growing used to soulless soul."
"Aunt Hagar's Blues", the biblical Hagar, handmaiden to Abraham and Sarah, was considered the "mother" of African Americans
"Beale Street Blues" (1916), written as a farewell to Beale Street of Memphis, which was named Beale Avenue until the song's popularity caused it to be changed
"Long Gone John (from Bowling Green)", about a famous bank robber
"Chantez-Les-Bas (Sing 'Em Low)", a tribute to the Creole culture of New Orleans
"Atlanta Blues", which includes the song "Make Me a Pallet on your Floor" as its chorus.
"Ole Miss Rag" (1917), a ragtime composition, recorded by Handy's Orchestra of Memphis
Awards and honors
On May 17, 1969, the United States Postal Service issued a commemorative stamp in his honor.

Citing 2003 as "the centennial anniversary of when W.C. Handy composed the first blues music" the United States Senate in 2002 passed a resolution declaring the year beginning February 1, 2003 as the "Year of the Blues".
Handy was honored with two markers on the Mississippi Blues Trail, the "Enlightenment of W.C. Handy" in Clarksdale, Mississippi and a marker at his birthplace in Florence, Alabama.

Tumblr media
hey.
wanna hear a love story about how your local magical boy made an attempt at a dangerous exorcism, only to have the fuckin clients house light up in flames? a lot of ghosts are like casper. they’ll be your friend. not this particular ghost. and that’s exactly why it trapped virote in a burning house! the smog was thick and he was counting his blessings. not sure why, though. didn’t he wanna die, anyway?
well… he did wanna die. not like that, though. too dramatic.
before he could get called up to the great heavens up on the moon, he was rescued by a firefighter with arms big enough to yank a tree out of the ground. richard calvin dunaway aka ricky. just a charming southern guy, straight from huntsville, alabama. unremarkable background, but he’s a remarkable man. that moonlight magnolia drawl of an accent coupled with a boyish smile? virote srisati sure did slide his number on by before going to the hospital.
Near Fatal Smoke Inhalation Won’t Stop His Love Life!!!
vi shot his shot, not expecting anything in return… until he got a text about a week and a half later. wanna grab a bite at the citrus club tomorrow if you’re free at 2? is what it said. he wasn’t free. he had a dentist appointment at that time. cancelled, though. that teeth whitening session could wait…! and that was one of the best decisions virote made in his life. they spent a good couple of hours together and got to know each other. ricky was just… a good-natured, big-hearted man. recently divorced, college degree in botany, former football AND baseball player, appalachian trail hiker, and one hell of a community volunteer. he’s also good at playing the accordion!
meetups turned into dates, dates turned into a relationship. they’re happy together. ricky, despite his initial skepticism, came to understand virote’s… uh, gifts. and virote asks him to the word ‘ insurance ’ sometimes. Southern Accents Are His Favorite, Babey.
he likes taking vi to the san fran botanical garden. that’s where he can really flex.
