Imbrication
Raine was never sloppy enough to embroider runes. Loose threads, stains, and bleached patches could all shift the enchantment. Embroidery was fine for something quick, but Raine was never pleased with lazy, short-term effects. Knitting and crochet patterns were better so long as none of the half-made designs had meaning in themselves. Sewn patches were functional, but they looked ugly.
Even Raine was aware this was probably overkill. They had soaked the scales they were using in a potion Lilith made them, dyed them all black, and carved runes into each individually. Now, they were attaching the scales to already-engraved leather, careful to attach them in a neutral pattern while the piece was still incomplete. It didn’t look resilient—the scales were too small, the fabric too malleable, the pattern all wrong—but if Raine pulled this off, it would be stronger than anything made since the war with the Scotts.
Jaya needed something that would protect her properly.
---
Jaya opened the box. It contained a masquerade mask, but without the showy elements that made such a thing ubiquitous. It was plain and black. It had no strap or stick to hold it up. Jaya could feel the grooves of scales under her fingertips, but the mask was too dark to see their outlines. It was clearly heavily enchanted.
Jaya was looking in the mirror when she put the mask on, so she saw the exact moment when the fabric started shifting. The mask expanded, the scales visible where they reached across her face and down her neck. Jaya grabbed at their outline automatically, but she felt her magic sucked into the scales uselessly. As though in response, the areas she was touching turned a shimmering gold under her fingertips. Before she could do anything else, the scales stopped moving.
Jaya was wearing armor. It was too fashionable to really look historical, paired with boots and the facsimile of a hooded half-cape, but between the empty weapons holsters, apparent padding around the ribs and neck, and resilience to magic, it was pretty inarguable what this was. Jaya reached up to pull down the hood, and she watched the mask fade with it, the armor inexplicably remaining. Experimentally, Jaya twitched a finger to lift a lipstick tube to the side of the mirror, and watched misty gold creep over the hand she was using. Her lips twitched. Even when they were trying to be practical, Raine’s designs ended up ludicrously ornamental. Jaya pulled the hood back up and grabbed where the mask was before, and the scales retracted until she was wearing her former outfit.
