bar italia — Tracey Denim (Matador)
Tumblr media
Tracey Denim by bar italia
If you didn’t know much about bar italia—and to be fair, most people don’t—you might be forgiven for expecting some sort of arch, lounge-y ironists’ pop when you put it on for the first time, just on the basis of the band name. You can even maintain this illusion through the first song and a half. Opener “guard” bops breezily in a 1960s Euro-film score way, its ingenue vocal line paced by bangle-clinks of cymbal and cowbell, its insouciant tune embellished with electric piano. It’s all sophistication and devil-may-care suavity, and sure, that’s fun, why not? I’ll have a Campari, thanks for asking.
That buoyant vibe continues, the rattle of drum kit mixed with chiming accents in “Nurse,” an early single. The song also floats on Nina Cristante’s careless phrasings. It’s all style and sculpted cheekbones. But then about a minute in, another voice joins, rougher and less sure of itself, friction-y with uncertainty and doubt, chanting woodenly as if to convince itself. All the sudden the song feels desolate and real, and it is at this moment that the guitars come in, fiery and eruptive and altogether out of line. It sounds, all the sudden, less like Esquivel and more like the Pastels (or slightly more currently, the Goon Sax). It’s a beautiful pivot, and one that bar italia is always making. Is it a sleek and assured Euro-pop stylist or a morose, sardonic realist, messy and desperate and unsatisfied with the way things are? It is both, sometimes simultaneously.
The mix of poise and scruffiness fluctuates continually. “Missus Morality” flirts kittenishly with Franco-pop. “changer” clangs disconsolately through downbeat shoe-gazer corridors. “Clark” bobs and rolls on a thick bass line, shimmers with slanting guitars, croons downheartedly eyes floorward, and then blossoms into a lovely little chorus. The point is that there’s plenty of lounge-y, jazzy pop here, but it’s most affecting when it twists slightly off true.

Kazuo Ishiguro’s sci-fi tearjerker “Never Let Me Go” is heading to the small screen. FX has officially ordered an adaptation of Ishiguro’s novel, set to air exclusively on Hulu.
Viola Prettejohn leads the show as Thora, a teenage clone who escapes her boarding school. Once in the outside world, she sets in motion events that will spark a revolution from the oppressed clones. The cast will also include Tracey Ullman, Kelly Macdonald, Aiysha Hart, Spike Fearn, Shaniqua Okwok, Gary Beadle, Kwami Odoom, Susan Brown, Keira Chanse, and Edward Holcroft.
The pilot for “Never Let Me Go” was written by Melissa Iqbal, who also showruns, and directed by Marc Munden. Both executive produce with Ishiguro, Garland, and DNA Productions’ Andrew Macdonald, Allon Reich, and Maria Fleischer. DNA previously worked with Garland, best known for his feature films “Ex-Machina” and this year’s “Men,” on his 2020 FX on Hulu miniseries “Devs.” FX Productions and Searchlight Television also produce.
“Never Let Me Go is a modern science fiction classic that Melissa Iqbal and the creative team have brilliantly adapted for FX as a drama exploring timely and unsettling themes on life and the ethics of technology,” said FX Entertainment president Gina Balian.

YESSSS okay so basic premise of this fic:
Gary, Phil, and Tracey are all kids but everyone else is normal age (except Carra but he only shows up later in the fic when Gary's a teenager)
No gnev & carra at Sky means that Roy and Wrighty host MNF together instead
giving u a whole section bc i just really enjoy the whole thing
---
Kelly's eyes stray to something behind the camera and the corner of her mouth ticks up in a poor attempt to smother a smile. This is never a good sign, especially not when a few seconds later Roy hears an excited shout of "DAD!" before he's had any time to brace himself.
They're shooting live, but somehow his charming little brat of a son still manages to slip past the crew and come crashing into Roy, his skinny arms wrapping tight around his waist. Roy looks over at where his husband is stood on the sideline mouthing 'sorry' with an amused expression that suggests he's not really sorry at all.
"Oh? Seems we have a guest for this evening's pitchside chat," Kelly says. "Roy, d'you want to...?"
Roy, because he's got an image to present, rolls his eyes at the camera with a smirk and teases "can't get the help these days, can you?" He nudges Gary, who's sort of half-hiding behind him now that he's aware he's on camera, and he holds his microphone out to him. "You want to introduce yourself?"
Gary looks up at Roy, then he looks at the microphone and leans towards it with a little frown of concentration, and says "Erm, hello. I'm Gary and I play for Manchester United's under-9s."
He nudges Roy's hand to move the mic away from him again and looks back up at him, waiting. Roy gives him a little wink of approval and rests his free hand on his shoulder to give it a squeeze.
To his right, Redders holds out a fist for Gary to bump in greeting, who returns the gesture and then has to cover his mouth to hide his giggles at the stupid little explosion noises Redders makes as he moves his hand back.
"Alright, Gaz?" he asks, "What'd you think of the game?"
More confident now that he's been reminded he's among familiar faces, Gary grabs Roy's wrist to bring the microphone back down to his level. "Um. My dads say that we probably can't catch City this late in the season, but I think it's still good to get a win, erm, especially at home against Liverpool."
Roy takes the mic back. "And your man got two goals, eh?" He turns to Kelly and Redders, tries to switch them all back into Serious Punditry Mode. "I mean, Rashford played brilliantly tonight, didn't he?"
They manage to make it through the last couple of minutes of the segment without incident, and when they call cut he scoops Gary up into his arms, spinning him round while he ignores his laughing protests of "I'm not a baby, Da!"
"You're a menace is what you are," Roy says fondly, carrying him over to Wrighty and plopping him unceremoniously in front of him. It then occurs to him that if Gary's the one crashing live shoots then there's no limit to the kind of trouble his siblings might be causing, so he glances at Wrighty and asks "the twins...?"
"They bullied Shaun into taking them to the Everton game," he says, like it's perfectly normal for two six-year-olds to be able to bully a man in his mid-thirties. "I did text you, don't go lookin' at me like that."
He feels a tug at his sleeve, and he looks down at Gary bouncing around excitedly. "Da. Da, are you nearly ready to go home? Dad said we could have pie and chips for supper. As a treat, like."
"Did he now?"
"He did, I promise. Can I have a whole pie to myself?"

T/K drabble. Ao3
“Kelly?” The voice came from behind her, unmistakable. She jumped.
Kelly made her excuses to the woman in front of her. “Tracey.”
“Fancy seeing you here.” The awkwardness hung in the air.
“I didn’t know you were,”
“Likewise,” Tracey said.
“Are you having luck?” Kelly hated these events, but she had been too single for too long.
“Not so much,” said Tracey, tilting her glass back and winking at Kelly. A warm feeling came over her. “I do wonder if that will change.”
Kelly couldn’t deny, she had thought about it before.
“I can see how it might,” said Kelly.

A gym in Tracey, California, was the site of a shocking scene on December 1st, 2008. As the regular customers arrived, their workout routines were interrupted by the sudden crash of the front doors. A young boy, clad in nothing but grey boxers and a chain around his ankle, stumbled in. He appeared to be in a state of extreme emaciation, his skin caked with blood and grime. With a wild look in his eyes, he implored those present to hide him. The boy, who was identified as 16-year-old Kyle Ramirez, stood at a mere 5 feet 8 inches, weighing a paltry 100 pounds.
At the age of eight, Kyle's biological mother abandoned him, leaving him in the care of Caren Ramirez, a family friend. CPS granted Ramirez custody based solely on a handwritten note from the mother, without conducting the required investigation. Over the years, CPS received numerous reports of abuse and neglect, but Kyle remained in Ramirez's custody, with his physical state deteriorating rapidly. Bruises, patches of missing hair, and extreme emaciation were frequent occurrences.
Kyle's brother was placed in protective custody in 2005 and told CPS about Kyle's abuse, but he would not be removed from the household until 2007. A few months later, Caren coerced Kyle into running away from protective custody and returning to her. This marked a significant escalation in the abuse he suffered.
For 18 months, Ramirez, along with three friends, Anthony Waiters, Michael Schumacher, and Kelly Lau, subjected Kyle to a relentless torrent of brutality. Belts, hammers, and baseball bats were used to strike him, while knives were used to cut and stab him. The wounds were then doused in bleach. Kyle was made to sleep with a chain around his leg, and he was burned with a red-hot metal bat. Despite his disappearance from protective custody, CPS never reported him missing.
Kyle lived in a constant state of terror, fearing that his abusers would kill him and dismember his body. He knew he had to escape, and one morning he managed to coerce Michael's two-year-old son to hand him the key to his chain. With the chain removed, he fled to the backyard and leaped over the fence with the aid of a trampoline.
In the end, justice was served, as Carmen, Kelly, and Michael received 30-year sentences after taking plea bargains. Anthony, on the other hand, pleaded not guilty and received a life sentence.
