Tomasz watched as Ria tapped the bug to her skin, and felt a prickle of unease run down his spine. Deep down he knew this was the last resort, that the whole thing had been assessed so many times in a short period of time that the chances of something going wrong were minimal. And yet there was no masking his anxiety around the whole thing.

‘Do I need to remind you we’re friends?’ Ria teased, rolling her shirt back down over her stomach.

Tomasz blinked his attention back to the room, forced his gaze to her face. ‘This is the stupidest idea you’ve ever had. And that’s saying something.’

‘Oi!’ she complained, throwing a cushion at him.

It went wide, but Tom caught it and hugged it close to his chest. ‘Seriously, Ria, we can –’

‘Don’t, Tom,’ she interrupted him softly, closing the distance between them and putting her hands on his shoulders. ‘I need to do this. I want to.’

Something tightened in his chest, but Tom bowed his head to kiss her quickly on the cheek. ‘Be careful.’

She grinned up at him, a look of mischief in her eyes that very almost reassured him. That almost covered her own misgivings about the whole thing. ‘I always am.’ Tomasz scoffed, desperately hoping Nicholas was as good as everyone had always said. That he’d keep his best friend safe while she did this for them, despite his own personal feelings about the journalist.
