Some headcanons regarding TMNT physiology

Over the years, I have come up with some headcanons regarding how I believe the Ninja Turtles' bodies work. I thought that perhaps it might be nice to finally share them with all of you.

These don't apply to all the iterations, of course, but they are pretty well universal in my mind, and I tend to incorporate most of them into my fanfics.

The Turtles (like leatherback sea turtles, echidnas, and some dinosaurs) are mesotherms, meaning they are neither warm nor cold blooded. They are, instead, in a middle-ground: they internally generate heat, but not to a constant temperature. In the Turtles' case, they will shiver when cold, and their bodies will not shut down right away when the temperature dips too low, though they may lose some energy and find it hard to concentrate.

Unlike many other modern reptiles and amphibians, who have a three-chambered heart, the Turtles have four-chambered hearts (like mammals and dinosaurs) that are larger and stronger than average human hearts and located at the center of their chests.

While the average human blood capacity is around five liters, the Turtles have about seven. Much of the blood flows under the shell -- a remnant of their lives as ordinary turtles, whose own blood does so in order to warm them when they bask. This means that the Turtles could lose close to three liters of blood before dying, while a human would only be able to lose two.

Their blood is also highly efficient at clotting, but that also means that storing blood for transfusions is difficult, and so must be directly transfused from one turtle to another in emergency situations.

Owing to their extensive circulatory system, they also have a larger lung capacity than humans and more oxygen-rich blood, and so are able to hold their breath for extended periods of time without adverse effects. Other than this, the Turtles' respiratory system is very much like humans', utilizing a diaphragm to inflate and deflate their lungs.

Like regular turtles, they do not have ribs, but rather their carapaces and plastrons serve that purpose, and they have muscles under their shells that keep their internal organs right where they belong.

Also like regular turtles, their spines curve along the insides of their shells. A direct hit on the center of their shells, then, could cause damage to their spinal column and nervous system, but fortunately their vertebral shields offer a fair amount of protection, so it would take quite an impact.

The Turtles are highly resistant to most infections and diseases, which increases their immunological responses. They do not get sick easily, and they recover quickly.

While their scales are not apparent, they are integrated into their skin, making it tougher than human skin. It takes a very hard hit to raise a bruise, and it is difficult to cut through without a very sharp or pointed blade.

Their bones are similar to humans, but are more resistant to breaking. They also heal quicker and stronger if they are broken.

Their muscles are also very close to human-like, but they are stronger than an average human due to compensating for the extra weight they carry in their shells. Because of this, their ligaments and tendons are also tougher, and it is difficult for them to have a joint dislocated.

Their sense of smell is more acute than humans, but not to an extreme degree. They are also not as bothered by foul smells (though this has more to do with living in a sewer than their physiology).

Their eyes are a bit tougher and more resistant to damage than human eyes due to a protective membrane that covers them. They see a bit better than humans in dark places and underwater.

Their hearing is somewhat more attuned to lower frequencies than human hearing, and is not dependent on external ears but rater an internal auditory system (making direct damage to their hearing unlikely).

They are capable of being knocked unconscious, but it takes a significant impact. Permanent or lingering damage to their brains is unlikely due to their structure, and so they also do not tend to suffer the same side-effects that humans would in the same circumstances (nausea, memory loss, etc.).

Although their nutritional needs are similar to humans, they do not need to eat every day, and in fact can get by quite well without food for a week if necessary (though they won't enjoy it). When food is readily available, however, they will eat as much as possible to store up energy. Their metabolism does not slow down when they do not eat, so overexerting themselves when they haven't had any food for a while can burn them out suddenly.

Their sleep schedules are much like most diurnal animals, though they are able to stay awake for extended periods of time and can get by on little sleep, if necessary. There have been times when they have been awake for days on end, getting by on short one hour naps here and there. In general, though, they like to have a regular sleep/wake cycle.

Like other reptiles, the Turtles never stop growing throughout their lifetimes; however their growth is slow, topping off at about 1-2 inches every five years.

Donnie, who put everyone to sleep on some random day of the "pajama party" and place trackers while they were unconscious: *nervously sipping coffee*

You know what I think about from time to time?

Donnie didn’t just “place” trackers on his brothers. No. The trackers were placed subcutaneously, which means, “under the skin.”

Placing a subcutaneous tracker would require either a large/thick hypodermic needle or a scalpel to make an incision, the latter requiring a stitch or two to close the wound.

...Regardless of the method, the conclusion is the same.

At some arbitrary point, Donnie performed minor surgery (via a needle or scalpel) on each individual brother to place a tracker under their skin. …and they had no clue.

Being Purple

Rise Ramblings #314

Donnie, a.k.a. Othello von Ryan, a.k.a. Bootyyyshaker9000 is one of two middle children in the Hamato Clan. While Leo, the other middle child, eventually (and inevitably) becomes the leader of their group, Donatello is free to carve out his own place on the team.

And carve he does.

He can fix anything.

He can make anything.

It doesn’t end there.

His list of talents is truly exhaustive…

And for good reason. Through him, his entire family is able to have everything that they need to survive.

His resourcefulness knows no bounds and the comfort his brothers are his top priority…

…mostly.

His usefulness is palpable. Visible. Physical.

His contribution is his strength. Through the trench he carved out for himself, he knows his place.

He’s the tech guy. He’s the “genius.” He’s their foundation.

He’s purple.

Besides, outside of what he can do and what he can contribute, what else is there?  

Unlike his brothers, Donatello sees his usefulness to the team as what he can provide his family, and only what he can provide his family. Therefore, if they can get what he provides elsewhere, then, to him, he has no place on the team or amongst his brothers.

But why would Donnie see himself as replaceable?

Maybe, it’s the internalization of things like this:

And it’s possible that, unconsciously, it's the reason that Donatello acts the way that he does towards his tech.

Even to the point of his tech also being…replaceable.

But I digress...

I believe that Donnie's deep-set insecurity about his place in his family reveals itself through the constant search for external validation, especially from a "parent-aged adult."

Fortunately, in show, he finally realizes his true worth, and how he’s actually seen by the people that love him…

and receives the validation he’s yearned for the most.

So, where does Donatello go from here?

Well, ultimately, by the time we learn of the bad future, Donatello is already…no more. But who he became transcended his lifespan by breathing life into the very resistance itself.

He was a genius ahead of his time.

He was a loving brother; a kind, energetic, and gentle soul.

Thankfully, with the events of the movie, he can be all of those things and more...

He can be Donatello Hamato.

Completed Draxum's Nightmare Comic!

I had a fun time creating this miniseries comic, answering interesting asks about writing Draxum's character and angst ideas, and just seeing people fall to their knees over the angst I fed them.

A comic I made a while ago. An actual ending for the Bad future timeline. And this Bible verse ( 2 Corinthians 5:3 ) inspired the appearance of the passed brothers- “For we will put on heavenly bodies; we will not be spirits without bodies.”

Leo sees them with the scars of their death- but their past life is soon forgotten, as the scars disappear. The comforting peace that God has an eternal home prepared for me comforts me more than anything, and I hope it comforts you as well :)

RotTMNT | Whumptober 2023 (and I don't give a fuck that it's not October anymore)

Story 1: But now this room is spinning while I'm trying just to fill in all the gaps

Safety Net | Swooning | "How many fingers am I holding up?"

Pt. 1

− Hey, Don-Tron, it's breakfast time! – A clear and indecently cheerful voice for such an early hour came from a speaker near the ceiling of the laboratory. Donnie didn't even have to look at the cameras to figure out who was bothering him at such a time. Exhaling noisily, he commands a mechanical hand to press the microphone button.

− Not hungry, Nardo.

No matter how hard he tries to make his voice less tired, the low volume and blurred sonorous consonants betray the degree of his exhaustion. Donnie's fingers slide over the keyboard, typing more and more new lines of code, and the monitor's light at minimum brightness is reflected in his dark brown eyes. A loud cough coming from outside makes him twitch and frown in displeasure. The camera broadcasting what is happening outside the laboratory shows the same displeased face of his twin.

− Bullshit. – Leo's right leg, not in a cast, hits the metal door. — C'mon, buddy, get out of your dark realm. You've been stuck there forever.

– Fifty−nine hours, – Donatello corrects dryly, but his older brother doesn't hear it.

The tapping of the keys becomes louder and jerkier. Yeah, damn it, he's been sitting here for more than two days, but hasn't been able to get far in creating advanced software for his systems. Among the lines running on the screen, every now and then there was some stupid mistake that makes his teeth grind with displeasure. Donnie tightens his jaw and shakes a head. Blurring appears at the edges of vision for a moment, but it dissipates as soon as the ninja blinks several times in a row. A quick glance at the nearby monitor — Leon is looking directly into the camera, his posture tense and radiating... something not very positive. Well, Donatello was really bad at reading emotions.

− Ignoring me? Okay. — The turtle in the blue mask turns around, the sound of crutches serving as his support beats an uneven dull rhythm. – Starve to death there.

As soon as these words reach his ears, Donnie's stomach reflexively twists into a knot and emits the unpleasant howl of a dying whale. The genius curses and leans his head back on the computer chair. Physiological needs always disappear from his list of tasks as soon as a worthwhile project appears on the horizon. Sometimes he regrets that he has not yet made himself a cyborg who does not need breaks for sleep, meals and the toilet. A broken smile appears on his face when Donatello imagines himself with a shiny chrome body. It seems like the dream of a moody child, so what?
