Bill Meyer: Year In Review 2017
Tumblr media
Dusted’s writers bid 2016 farewell with a mixture of sadness and revulsion. We grieved the many great musicians who died, but the sense that the countries we live in were collectively embracing paths that might make us mourn the toppling of fundamental principals weighed even heavier. And 2017 has shown that our dismay was not misplaced. There’s no need to recount the shit show of USA politics here, except to say that it’s fucking embarrassing to know that a sizable portion of your country is swallowing scams so transparent that if your teenager pulled that crap on you, you’d ground them an extra week just for thinking you were that dumb. But while compassion, justice, and reality contact seem to have gone out the window, I’ve never found music more sustaining. So let’s talk about what gives a guy hope.
Bill Orcutt
Bill Orcutt by Bill Orcutt
This year, like every year, I listened to a lot of solo guitar music. Bill Orcutt’s self-titled LP twisted all the lies out of the old American songbook and made it sing his song; Richard Osborn’s Endless kept up the tradition of transcendence; and newcomers Rob Noyes and Alexander delivered strong debut LPs. Elkhorn is a duo and not quite new, but their first full-length record, The Black River, nails that feeling of knowing that things have been lost but that can’t stop you.
 Elkhorn
The Black River by Elkhorn
In 2017 I was privileged to hear many improvisers repeatedly, in different contexts and sometimes on different continents. It has felt like a privilege to hear them negotiate a balance between the articulation of personal concerns and group values, night after night, in ways that build things up. If Jim Baker, Steve Hunt, Mars Williams, Brian Sandstrom, Ikue Mori, Paal Nilssen-Love, Pascal Niggenkemper, John Butcher, Ståle Liavik Solberg, Anton Hatwich, Tony Buck, Dave Rempis, Andrew Clinkman, Macie Stewart, Steve Marquette, Phil Sudderberg, Ken Vandermark, Rafael Toral, Carol Genetti, Jaimie Branch, Joe McPhee, Tomeka Reid, John Edwards, Nick Mazzarella, Fred Lonberg-Holm, Tim Daisy, Jason Stein, Jason Roebke, Jason Adasiewicz, Paul Giallorenzo, Joshua Abrams, Hamid Drake, Michael Zerang and Chad Taylor (as well as the others I saw more than once, but am forgetting to name here) can do it, the rest of us can too.

p>It’s the end of the year, so lists are obligatory. Here are two that I compiled for other publications.
 The Wire top ten
1 Jaimie Branch, Fly or Die (International Anthem)
2 Bill Orcutt, Bill Orcutt (Palilalia)
3 Sarah Davachi, All My Circles Run (SOD)
4 Keiji Haino/John Butcher Haino, Light Never Bright Enough (Otoroku)
5 Evan Caminiti, Toxic City Music (Dust Editions)
6 Les Filles de Illighadad, Eghass Malan (Sahel Sounds)
7 Shelter, Shelter (Audiographic)
8 Anthony Pasquarosa, Abbandonato Da Dio Nazione (VDSQ/Thin Wrist)
9 Richard Osborn, Endless (Tompkins Square)
10 Anahita, Tourmaline (Three Four)
2017 Magnet Magazine Jazz and Improvised Music top 10
1 Jaimie Branch, Fly or Die (International Anthem)
2 Bill Orcutt, Bill Orcutt (Palilalia)
3 Shelter, Shelter (Audiographic)
4 Keiji Haino/John Butcher Haino, Light Never Bright Enough (Otoroku)
5 Rempis Percussion Quartet, Cochonerie (Aerophonic)
6 Paal Nilssen-Love/Frode Gjerstad, Nearby Faraway (PNL)
7 Tomas Fujiwara, Triple Double (Firehouse 12)
8 Keith Rowe The Room Extended (Erstwhile Records)
9 Rob Mazurek, Rome (Clean Feed)
10 The Necks, Unfold (Ideologic Organ)
Both were done too soon to acknowledge some great music I heard late in the year, so let’s just say that Olivia Block and Ulaan Passerine made records very much worth your time. But these lists convey this point; in 2017, sound felt truer than words.  Most of the music on these lists is instrumental, and of the records with singing, one bypasses linguistic meaning by being in a language I don’t know and a couple others obliterate it altogether. So how about it, 2018, what do you have to say for yourself?

A surprising event occurred on this date in hockey history, April 10th, 1990, when the Wayne Gretzky led Los Angeles Kings defeated the Calgary Flames 12-4 in game four of their Stanley Cup semi finals series.
The score wasn't a big surprise nor was the fact that three Kings each had hat tricks in the game. The shocking fact was that Wayne Gretzky wasn't one of the players with a hat trick. Dave Taylor, Tomas Sandstrom and Tony Granato each dented the twine three times.
Wayne did tally five points (1-4-5) as his line with Sandstrom and Granato compiled 15 points. Calgary recovered from this one sided loss to take game five 5-1 at the Saddledome but lost the series in six games with a 4-3 double OT loss in game six at the Fabulous Forum in LA.

whenever i talk about hall of famers i can't stop thinking about how the players i watch today are going to be regarded in 20+ years. how will i tell my kids about jonathan quick? what will they think about tyler seguin? about brad marchand? what if im watching the draft with them and they tell me about an upcoming pick and it's max pacioretty's son? or brent burns'? im gonna tell them about watching auston matthews' debut as a teenager or about watching sidney crosby win the Stanley cup and what if they don't understand the significance behind that because it wasn't their time like the way i brush it off sometimes when my dad talks about tomas sandstrom and my mom talks about rob blake. it's so weird for me to think about new generations of hockey. i can't imagine what it's gonna be like when im older but im so excited for the game to keep growing.

On January 26, 1991, Wayne Gretzky celebrated his 30th birthday by scoring his 48th career hat trick against the Vancouver Canucks. Gretzky had five points, Tomas Sandstrom recorded four assists, and Kelly Hrudey made 32 saves in a 5-4 win for the @LAKings. #LAKings #GoKingsGo https://www.instagram.com/p/Cn4vImxJRpt/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The Columbus Blue Jackets have signed right wing Emil Bemstrom to a three-year entry level contract, club General Manager Jarmo Kekalainen announced today. Bemstrom was selected by the Blue Jackets in the fourth round, 117th overall, at the 2017 NHL Draft.
Bemstrom, 19, recorded 23 goals and 12 assists for 35 points with eight penalty minutes, 10 power play goals and a +10 plus/minus rating, while averaging 13:46 of ice time in 47 games with Djurgardens IF in the Swedish Hockey League (SHL) in 2018-19. He led the league in goals and power play goals and captured the SHL's Rookie of the Year and Swedish Junior Hockey Player of the Year awards after leading all rookies in goals, points and power play goals. His 23 goals were tied with Tomas Sandstrom (1982-83), Peter Forsberg (1992-93) and Patric Hornqvist (2006-07) for the third-most by a teenager in a season in league history, trailing only Kent Nilsson (28, 1975-76) and Elias Pettersson (24, 2017-18). He added 5-5-10 in 19 playoff games to help the club advance to the SHL final.
The Nykoping, Sweden native has notched 23-12-35, eight penalty minutes and a +9 plus/minus rating in 52 career SHL appearances with Djurgardens IF and Leksands IF, including a five-game stint with Leksands in 2016-17. He spent the 2017-18 campaign with the Leksands organization, collecting 8-7-15 in 33 games with the men's club (Allsvenskan) and 12-13-25 in 18 outings with the junior team (SuperElit).
The 5-10, 181-pound winger has represented Sweden at several international competitions. He was named a top three player for his country at the 2019 IIHF World Junior Championships after collecting 4-2-6 in five appearances.

Most vicious stick-swinging incidents in NHL history
Tumblr media
Ryan Hollweg lays on the ice after taking a slash to the face from Chris Simon.(Ed Betz/AP)
As beautiful a game that hockey is most of the time, the ugly side of the sport has once again reared its ugly head.
Detroit Red Wings forward Gustav Nyquist is facing a lengthy suspension after he nearly decapitated Wild defenceman Jared Spurgeon with a nasty, pitchfork-style spear in the opening period of Minnesota’s 6-3 win on Sunday.
Nyquist was given only a four-minute double-minor, but was contacted by the NHL’s player safety department following the game and offered an in-person hearing—meaning a suspension of at least six games is imminent. He has since declined the offer and will phone in for a hearing with the league on Wednesday.
As a reminder how nasty the game can be, here’s a look at the most vicious stick-swinging incidents in NHL history:
Marty McSorley on Donald Brashear
youtube
During a March 2000 game between the Boston Bruins and Vancouver Canucks, Marty McSorley chased down Donald Brashear and delivered a vicious two-hander to the side of Brashear’s head. The case was tried in a British Columbia court where McSorley received an 18-month conditional discharge after being found guilty of assault with a weapon. McSorley also lost over $100,000 in pay as he was suspended for the final 23 games of the season.
Jesse Boulerice on Ryan Kesler
youtube
As an October 2007 game between the Vancouver Canucks and Philadelphia Flyers was winding down with the Flyers leading 8-2, Flyers’ Jesse Boulerice attacked Canucks forward Ryan Kessler with a devastating cross-check to the face. Kesler would return the next game after only receiving a swollen jaw and bruising to the face, while Boulerice was suspended 25 games by the NHL.
Duncan Keith on Charlie Coyle
youtube
The most recent stomach-turning slash came just prior to last season’s playoffs. Chicago Blackhawks defenceman Duncan Keith connected with a wild, one-handed slash to the head of Minnesota forward Charlie Coyle. The All-Star received a six-game suspension from the NHL in March 2016, which caused him to sit the final five regular season game plus the club’s first playoff game against St.Louis—a series they went on to lose in seven games.
Chris Simon on Ryan Hollweg
youtube
With less than seven minutes remaining in the third period of a game between the Islanders and the New York Rangers in March 2007, Chris Simon went ballistic and delivered a hybrid swinging cross-check to the head of Rangers forward Ryan Hollweg. Simon, who had a notoriously bad temper, was suspended for 25 games by the league in what was the seventh suspension of his career.
Brad May on Steve Heinze
youtube
During the third period of a November 2000 game against the Blue Jackets, Phoenix Coyotes forward Brad May coasted towards Steve Heinze and hit him with a blindside slash to the back of the head. Despite how brutal this looked at first glance, Heinze was not seriously injured and, after some stitches, returned to the ice. May received a 10-game suspension (the first suspension of his career) and forfeited nearly $120,000 in salary as a result.
Alexander Perezhogin on Garrett Stafford
youtube
Though this incident occurred in the AHL, it stands as possibly the most vicious stick attack ever in a professional hockey game. As Hamilton Bulldogs forward Alexander Perezhogin and Cleveland Barons defenceman Garrett Stafford battled in front of the net during a 2004 playoff series, Perezhogin turned around and delivered a sickening baseball swing that connected to the face of Stafford, who was convulsing on the ice and reportedly suffered a seizure. Perezhogin missed his team’s five remaining games and was suspended for the entire 2004-05 season.
Some other notable stick-swinging incidents include Philadelphia Flyers’ Dave Brown receiving a 15-game suspension in November 1987 for cross-checking Tomas Sandstrom of the New York Rangers and breaking his jaw, while Dino Ciccarelli spent one day in jail for striking Maple Leafs defenceman Luke Richardson in the head with his stick during a game in 1988.
