ACE VENTURA : PET DETECTIVE (1994) C’est portés par le récent visionnage de l’hilarant THE MASK (1994) qu’on s’oriente tout naturellement vers un autre film, heu... “majeur” de la carrière de Jim Carrey, ACE VENTURA : PET DETECTIVE étant l’un de ses rôles ancrés dans la mémoire du grand public: on tique pourtant sur un détail gênant, le traitement du personnage de Lois Einhorn étant à la limite de l’homophobie et de la transphobie -pour ne pas dire en plein dedans-. Bien sûr, on n’incrimine pas directement l’acteur-clown, ici soumis à un scénario idiot prétexte à une déferlante de gags plus ou moins de bon ton. En jeune loup, Carrey surjoue, et on détecte immédiatement certains gimmicks qui seront plus tard magnifiés dans THE MASK, dans un contexte enfin approprié aux grimaces de l’acteur: malgré les capacités faciales et physiques qui contribuent à appuyer le caractère délirant du détective mi-autiste mi-hyperactif, sa prestance est d’une affligeante lourdeur. La faute à un mauvais rythme narratif, mais surtout à l’humour très moyen et peu inspiré, qui recycle morceaux musicaux célèbres pour fédérer son audience et patterns de séquence-gags très classiques, mais plus du tout marrantes aujourd’hui tant c’est sagement ringard. Pour mémo, ACE VENTURA est un long-métrage objectivement raté: son protagoniste principal ne tisse que peu de liens avec les représentants de la cause qu’il défend de manière assez extrême: encore une fois, le lien homme-animal est mieux exploité dans THE MASK, bien que moindre dans son importance relative à son scénario. Un comble. Le montage n’est pas en reste, accumulant le fonctionnel plus que l’audacieux: certes, ACE VENTURA est une comédie, et on a le droit à plus sur ce type de production en termes de rendu. A de rares moments, le caméra du réalisateur Tom Shadyac -bien connu pour ses comédies peu transcendantes avec des gens tels que Robin Williams (DOCTOR PATCH, 1998), Eddie Murphy (THE NUTTY PROFESSOR, 1996) et forcément Jim Carrey avec LIAR, LIAR en 1997 et BRUCE ALMIGHTY six années plus tard- arrive à laisser la porte ouverte aux scènes laissant le détective animalier faire le zouave, bien que très très très très très rares -la répétition est utile- et pas assez mémorable pour tenir le film. Bancal et mauvais, c’est le constat objectif du regard que l’on porte sur ACE VENTURA premier du nom, avec son intrigue digne d’une mauvais série policière des 70′s, et son casting inapproprié -Udo Kier, pourquoi?-: ça fait un peu tache sur le CV de Jim Carrey, plus abordable dans l’insupportablement génial DUMB AND DUMBER (1994) ou l’émotionnel THE TRUMAN SHOW (1998)... Ajoutez à cette mixture “éco+” une bande-son tout à fait ignoble, et vous obtenez ACE VENTURA : PET DETECTIVE : une mauvaise pioche évidente de l’an de grâce 1994, à la réputation et valeur 100% surestimée. N’étant pas le film comique attendu, il est triste de devoir attendre 2018 pour dire tout haut que “ça a toujours été nul“, et surtout que “l’empathie du public a accordé trop de crédit à ce long-métrage de seconde zone à cause du nom de Jim Carrey présent sur son affiche”: mieux vaut tard que jamais, comme on dit. Pour le deuxième épisode, ce sera plus tard. Où sont donc mes cachets contre les brûlures d’estomac?

Una de las comedias que demostro el poderoso histrionismo que posee Jim Carrey al darlo todo en un papel. Here's my review for The Brian Banks Story. Wow, what moving movie! Tom Shadyac is best known for his very successful comedy movies, like: Ace Ventura, Pet Detective, The Nutty Professor, Liar Liar, and Bruce Almighty, among many others. Tom Shadyac directed Brian Banks his first dram to great effect. Brian Banks is the story of an unjustly accused football player who was supposed to blowup the NFL when he was accused of raping this young high school girl. It destroyed his life and he spent over 6 years in prison before he was released on strict probation as a sex offender. It was the California Innocence Project with him doggedly pursuing justice and his dream that turned it all around. It's a great movie! I highly recommend seeing it when it opens to the general public.
