John Mulaney: The Comeback Kid Review by: Calvin Anglin

Like anybody who loves to laugh, I often find myself scrolling through the comedy section on Netflix and YouTube, as well as trying to tune into every single late night variety or talk show at the same time (when I can stay up that late). We earthlings are blessed with a plethora of comedic sub-genres to choose from. Among the many ways we can consume comedy, there is the classic stand-up format. There is something special about stand-up, in that it’s the most difficult of the comedic sub-genres in which to have a successful act. We audience members expect laughs from the time that comedian walks on the stage until the time he or she walks off and that is just what John Mulaney provides in his special John Mulaney: The Comeback Kid.

From the moment John Mulaney walks out on stage, he makes us feel as if we are an old friend that he hasn’t seen in a while as he updates us on what’s been going on in his life since we last saw him. Rightly so, as it has been almost four years since we heard from him in this format. Nevertheless, he has returned more confident than ever as he paces across the stage, seeming to be a bit more relaxed than he was in his previous special. It makes for an inviting atmosphere that, even when Mr. Mulaney briefly works the crowd, makes us feel like we are at a small party listening to that funny person we all know tell us about their parents’ hilarious antics. Another thing that separates The Comeback Kid from its peers is—put simply—words. The special is full of rich descriptive language such as “Cheeto-fingered” and “rat-mustachioed” and there is noticeably fewer curse words than would normally be expected from this sort of performance. Mr. Mulaney also shows his writing chops in having crafted a special that flows from one topic to another with ease.

Now, I don’t know if any of you who are reading this saw the show Mulaney on Fox, but if you did, please do not judge Mr. Mulaney. At its best, it was an average comedy that might have survived a few seasons if there weren’t ten thousand sitcoms on television already and if ABC wasn’t pumping out comedy gold on Wednesday nights. This misstep in an otherwise stellar career proves that Mr. Mulaney is not without his flaws. He rarely touches on controversial topics, and when he does, he quickly moves on to other material. He also does not try to make any larger points about the human condition. This criticism is nitpicky, however as John Mulaney’s work is what comedy should be: funny. After all, Lorne Michaels doesn’t hire just anybody. 

Grade: 8/10.
