First of all, I would like to say a great big SORRY for answering this so late! I’ve finally got round to answering this.

So.......Mary/Matthew.

What made me ship it: Strangely, this question is difficult to answer because I don’t know where to begin. I suppose.... what made me really ship them in the first place was that they are so healthy, and both during their convoluted courtship and their married life, it’s so obvious that they respect each other. They bring out the best in each other. They complement each other and accept one another just the way they are, flaws and all. They enjoy each other’s company. They share the same sense of humour. Their love is unconditional, their chemistry explosive and unlike anything I’d ever seen before. Their adoration for one another is so beautifully GENUINE and believable. More than anything, though, I think I ship them because they made me believe for the first time in true love.

So all of those factors morphed together and made me fall hopelessly in love with them, both individually and as a couple :)

Favourite things about the ship: All of the things mentioned above, plus some other stuff. Such as the fact that when they do fight and argue, the fights are always, always healthy. They get into a furious argument and still get into bed with each other. They hold their love above everything. There’s also the fact that they can be emotionally vulnerable with each other. They are the only people who can access the other’s heart and they know the deepest core of each other. There’s such a deep level of intimacy they share which is so beautiful to watch. I love the way they work as a team, they are in a partnership together and they are really good friends who are so comfortable around each other. All of this in addition to being physically attracted and having spades of sexual chemistry. They can be silly and goofy around one another which is adorable! (MATTHEW’S BED FLOP. AGH. And Mary’s silly miming during charades in the S2CS. She looked so cute!)

Unpopular opinion I have about the ship: An unpopular opinion.... Hmmm. I don’t know if this counts, but.... I just think Lavinia should not have been killed off. She should have broken it off with Matthew, leave and marry a man whose heart was hers and hers alone. That’s the only sort-of unpopular opinion I have about this ship. Other than that, no.... I love everything about them, even the angst and heartbreak and pining and when they are both being idiots!

Now for Sybil and Tom.

What made me ship it: I think they’re interesting together, but no, I don’t think they’re a truly good couple.

Favourite things about the ship: I like that they overcome all odds to be together... the daughter of an earl marrying a chauffeur was, needless to say, a massive step down in society and I admire Sybil for having the guts to do it. I also like that (in the first season) they have a shared interest in politics and women’s rights and the way Tom encourages her :) Also, BABY SYBBIE. That moment between them after the baby was born was very sweet.

Unpopular opinions I have about the ship: Now for the unpopular opinions. I have a few. (To all the S/T shippers.... I’m really sorry, I don’t mean any offence :))

During S1, I liked them and I thought their slowly burgeoning love was cute and sweet. During S2, though... I didn’t care for them much. Much of the season was spent by Tom being a bit pushy, badgering Sybil and trying to convince her to run away with him, and on some occasions even putting her down, showing his resentment towards her family and acting like he knew better than her, which sort of rubbed me the wrong way. The adoration and tenderness was missing in S2.

I also got the feeling that Sybil didn’t fall in love with Tom for the person he was. While agreeing to marry him, she says, “I’m ready to travel..... and you’re my ticket.” It sounds like the only reason she married him was because she wanted a way out of her life, not because she genuinely cared for him as a person.

Plus, there’s the fact that compared to the other main developing couples on the show in the first three seasons (Matthew/Mary and Bates/Anna) Sybil and Tom are the couple that gets the least amount of screen time. They spend S1 being friends, with Tom slowly developing a crush on Sybil. They receive permission to marry near the end of S2. We don’t get to see their wedding. They briefly return in 3x01 for Mary’s wedding. They’re absent in 3x02 and play a minimal part in 3x03. 3x04 is completely overshadowed by Tom’s exile from Ireland. That’s the last episode they’re together before Sybil dies in 3x05. So we don’t get to see much of their married life, which is another reason why I couldn’t fully get behind them and ship them wholeheartedly.

A highly polished pair of black boots appeared in front of Sybil as she sat in the garden of the hospital, staring at the ground, gripping the edge of the wooden bench tightly.

‘Are you all right, milady? Tom asked softly, too much concern in his voice.

She closed her eyes, not trusting herself to speak without shedding the tears she was desperately trying to hold back. She felt him sit beside her, a respectable six or so inches between them, and opened her eyes.

‘I’m a good listener if you want to talk about it.’

‘My… my patient died,’ Sybil murmured, the simple words nearly tipping her over the edge.

‘I’m sorry to hear that.’

‘Lieutenant Adams. Frank Adams. He was… he was my age. Two months younger than me, in fact,’ she continued quietly.

‘That’s very sad,’ Tom said, gently.

‘He was…’ She paused, closing her eyes briefly again. ‘He’s the first patient I’ve lost.’

‘That must be hard. Especially when you’d got to know him a little.’

Sybil nodded, seeing Frank Adams' face in her mind’s eye, his freckles stark on his too-pale face.

‘Were you with him?’

Sybil nodded again.

‘Then he didn’t go alone. He had you taking care of him as he began his journey.’

‘I didn’t take care of him, though, did I?’ Sybil said, bitterly.

‘Yes, you did. You made sure he was as comfortable as he could be, didn’t you?’

‘Yes,’ she said, reluctantly.

‘There you go then.’

‘But I couldn’t save him.’

‘It’s not your job to save him. It’s your job to take care of him. And you did that.’

Sybil sat up, thinking about that.

‘Who takes care of you?’ Tom asked, looking sideways at her.

She glanced across at him. ‘I don’t need taking care of.’

‘Yes, you do. We all need someone to take care of us at some point. Especially during the dark times. So, who takes care of you?’

Sybil shrugged, not knowing how to answer that question.

‘I’ll take care of you. If you’ll let me,’ he said softly, laying his hand on the bench between them, not touching her, just letting it lie there.

Sybil glanced down at it, knowing the comfort he was offering her shouldn’t exist between them. She pressed her lips together and then lay her hand next to his on the bench, her little finger crooked over his.

‘Stop it,’ Sybil breathed, raggedly.

‘Stop what?’ Tom replied, all innocence.

‘You know what. That. What you’re doing now. Stop it,’ she murmured, her hand going to his chest, but finding herself stroking it rather than pushing him away as she’d intended.

‘This?’ he asked, dragging his tongue up the column of her neck, one hand on her tiny waist, the other cupping her face.

‘Hmmm, yes, that,’ she moaned, astounded such a small touch could make her quiver the way it did.

‘Don’t you like it?’ he asked, sucking a kiss on the delicate skin below her ear.

‘Oh, heavens, yes. You know I do. But we shouldn’t… we shouldn't… oh, my goodness.’ Sybil dissolved into another moan, all her senses firing.

‘Why shouldn’t we?’ he asked as he kissed her neck. ‘It’s not breaking any rules. You said I could kiss you. Nothing more until it’s all settled,  until we’re married. All I’m doing is kissing you.’

‘But... but... when I said that, I didn’t know you could kiss me like this,’ Sybil murmured, tilting her head to give him more skin to explore.

‘Wait until I finally get you naked, my darling. I’ll show you just how much and how thoroughly I can kiss you then,’ he promised, his voice low and intimate. ‘I’ll kiss every inch of your gorgeous body then.’

Sybil groaned, imagining it, her excitement growing. ‘Every inch?’

‘Every. Single. Inch,’ Tom vowed, punctuating each word with a sensual kiss. ‘From here – ’ he kissed her forehead ‘ – to here – ’ he kissed her lips ‘ – to these little beauties – ’ he rubbed his thumbs over her stiff nipples, pulling a surprised moan from her ‘ – to this sacred place – ’ he cupped her briefly between her legs ‘ – right down to your perfect little toes.’

‘Oh, my goodness,’ Sybil breathed, overwhelmed by the thought of it, both scandalised and intrigued by the thought of him kissing her most private places. It hadn’t occurred to her that he might do that. In fact, she had little idea about what happened in the bedroom between a husband and wife. But it seemed like Tom did.

‘Do you like the thought of that, love?’ Tom whispered in her ear, his tongue tracing the shell of it.

‘Oh, God, yes,’ Sybil said fervently, her knees shaking. ‘Are you really going to kiss my private places?’

He gazed at her, his eyes molten with desire, and nodded.

‘Kiss. Lick. Suck. I’m going to use my mouth on you until you shake apart with pleasure,’ he promised, heat in his voice. ‘I’m going to make it my life’s work to map your beautiful body with my tongue.’

‘Oh, heavens,’ Sybil sighed, trembling against him. ‘That’s… that’s… something to look forward to. But you’d better stop now.’

‘Why?’

‘If you don’t stop now – ’

‘Hmmm?’

‘I’m not sure I’ll want you to stop.’

Tom chuckled. ‘That’s not an incentive for me to stop, love.’

‘Maybe just a bit longer,’ Sybil panted, clutching his shirt. 'Just a few more kisses.'

Edith looking awkward and Violet obfuscating like mad as Sir Anthony politely asks about Sybil's marriage and her husband. But it's interesting that Sir Anthony clearly hasn't heard any gossip about the youngest Crawley daughter marrying the family's erstwhile chauffeur. The family must have worked hard to obscure the details. But then in the first film, Lucy tells Tom that she and her mother followed Sybil's story as if it was all over the gossip rags.

Thomas, Sybil & Matthew would've been such a powerful and chaotic friendship. Everyone's reaction to seeing the three of them together the first time. Matthew and Sybil defending Thomas. The three of them sitting down and chatting. Matthew and Sybil constantly pulling Thomas away from work or saying they need Thomas for something. All of them talking about their love lives after Thomas opens up to them. The angst of Thomas being the last one standing.
