➳ some facts about me! my name is hayley and i’m just a silly little fangirl who loves reading, writing, drinking tea, feeling nostalgic, and obsessing over + living vicariously through fictional characters
➳ my goal on this blog is to write for everyone i can because i know the feeling of looking up a fic and finding it doesn’t exist and i feel like i owe it to my twelve y/o (and current!!) obsessive self to fill the void. that’s basically it— i write to fill the void 💌
➳ find the list of fandoms i write for at the bottom of this post

Thomas barrow x deaf!reader - we’re both different
Hey, is it possible to request a Thomas Barrow x deaf!reader where the reader is also a servant and Thomas is the only one who bothered to get to know her and communicate with her? Thank you. - Anon💜
A/N: italics will be sign language
Sitting at the table, you looked at the book in front of you as you ignored the dinner in front of you, completely unaware of everything else going on around you.
“Put down your book and finish eating before it’s too late.” Mrs Patmore said.
Thomas glanced up from his own plate, and he watched as everybody looked at you.
Your book was taken from you and you looked around confused, brows furrowed and Daisy pointed to your plate.
You looked at Thomas.
Why did she take my book?
He gestured to your plate and you nodded, picking up your knife and fork.
“Give me the book Daisy.”
“Of course.”
She beamed brightly as she brought it over and he snatched it back from her, just like she had done to you.
You hadn’t done anything to deserve the way they treated you, and now they were teaching Daisy and any other new servant that joins to do the same thing to you.
Thomas didn’t agree with it, just because you were different to them.
He was different to them.
You ate your dinner, watching as your plate was taken away from you and he watched as everybody else left.
Walking over, he sat next to you, handing you your hook back and you grinned brightly at him in thanks as you opened it again.
After a few minutes you felt a tap on your arm, and you turned around to face him.
Put the book down for a moment.
You nodded your head, turning your attention fully to him.
Do you understand why they do what they are doing to you?
Because I’m different. I know.
He sighed, nodding his head.
It’s okay, I’m used to it. Everybody always treats me different.
He leant back in his chair, lighting a cigarette.
Does it bother you?
You shook your head, smiling softly at him.
No. I have you. That’s enough friends for me.
We are not friends.
We are the best of friends.
Thomas rolled his eyes as you, and turned around so he couldn’t see you signing anymore and you smacked his shoulder.
He carried on ignoring you and you walked around him only for him to turn around once more.
Reaching to the table you too his tin and shook it so he knew that you had it.
He spun around and you put it up your sleeve was he wasn’t able to grab it back from you.
Don’t turn your back on me that’s not nice.
He held out his hand, waiting for you to return the tin to him.
No you don’t deserve to smoke. Smoking is bad anyway.
He picked up your book, tucking it into his liveries.
Come in!
He rose a brow in question, and you rolled your eyes, repeating the words a little slower this time.
Sometimes you forgot that Thomas was still just learning how to sign, he knew a bit when you arrived, and over time he picked up more from you.
Give me the tin and I will give you the book.
You huffed, crossing your arms.
Really? You are going to ignore me?
You turned to the side so you could still see him out the corner of your eyes, but you didn’t have to look at what he was saying.
Thomas scoffed a little, shaking his head as he picked up his news paper.
You weren’t exactly quiet when you moved, so when you tried creeping up on him he knew straight away.
You tried to grab the paper and he held it to the side, when you went that way to get it he stood up and held it up in the air so you couldn’t reach it despite how much you jumped for it.
Thomas smirked a little, looking at you as you huffed again and stopped, looking at him.
He held out his hand and you reached into your sleeve, holding out the tin and he set the paper down, taking it.
He took out a cigarette and walked away while you followed him.
When he was outside you hit his arm.
He smirked a little, pretending that he couldn’t see you.
You sat down next to him, knocking your shoulder into his a few times until he did the same thing, making you rub your shoulder where you collided with him.
Thomas tapped the back of your hand and you looked at him.
“You’re so childish.” He said slowly.
You are mean.
He reached into his pocket, handing you your book back.
“I know.”
You grinned brightly and took it.
Thomas rolled his eyes as he watched you run back inside to go carry on reading.
You weren’t a bad person, and he knew that, but in a way he was glad the others couldn’t use sign language like he could.
He could talk to you about things nobody else needed to hear about, and you always kept them to yourself.
You knew about him, who he was and why he was different and you were just happy to have a friend, you couldn’t care less that everybody else would find him revolting.
He knew what it was like to be persecuted for being different, and maybe that’s why he was so protective over you without realising it.
You were young, and it wasn’t your fault you were deaf, it just happened, and you needed somebody to watch over you and that’s what he would do

Sit Back, Relax, And Enjoy
Partly NSFW Thomas Barrow x Reader
Kinktober Day 8: Handjob/Fingering Plot: Thomas is an amazing secret boyfrend, however, you think he should relax every now and then.
Reader: non-specified sex but written with a man in mind (I don't know whether Thomas would be into non-binary people, so I wrote it gender-neutral but the reader normally sleeps in one of the men's bedrooms) Warnings: explicit sexual content (handjob with Thomas receiving, but there's fluff and consent talk before it if you just want to read that first part :) (roughly before the cut)) Work count: 1322 Inspiration: Today's prompt is from this list by @ghoul-foolery Also available on AO3
*🧡*🧡*🧡*
Anna called your name. "Yes, what is it?" "Mr. Barrow was looking for you downstairs." You tried not to smile. "Yes?" "He didn't say what he needs." She knitted her eyebrows. "I hope he isn't overworking you." "Thank you for your concern. I'm fine." What would she think if she knew you liked him?
Mr. Bates joined her. "Is he giving you extra tasks again? If you want, I'll have a word with him." "Oh, it's alright. He didn't seem angry, did he?" Bates turned to Anna, who shook her head. "No. But...Take care." "Are saying I can't handle him?" She gasps. "No! I, uh..." "Just a joke." You smiled until she looked relieved. You guessed not everyone could understand your humour like Thomas.
Bates and Anna looked after you, surprised at your quick pace considering that you'd likely have to help the notoriously grumpy man with work. They shrugged, seeing you disappear.
Suddenly, a familiar voice stopped you in your tracks, "Hey, slow down!" "Tho-Mr. Barrow." A small smile bearly crept onto his lips before he schooled his expression back into a serious one. "Watch where you're going." He straightened his jacket and made sure no one saw you. "Follow me."
Thomas lead you to his room with quick strides and when no one was around, opened the door for you, then turned the key once inside. Finally, you could see how content he was.
He took your hands in his. "Guess what I managed to do?" Right now he was even grinning. "What?" He was much more considerate than one might assume, always finding something to do for you. "We have the room for ourselves for two weeks." "Really?" "Yes," he breathed. "He's gone?" "Temporarily. But I managed to convince him to make his trip a little longer" "That's great! You're a genius, you know that, Thomas?" He looked away, abashed. "I only did what I thought you might appreciate. Without you as motivation, I'm not sure I—"
And just like that, you shut him up with a kiss. His hands went to your shoulders and steadily moved up until he was cupping your cheeks while you stepped closer to hug his waist. The kiss was deep, like so many had been over the last month. There hadn't been as many opportunities to kiss him as you wanted. Until now...
Thomas was breathing harder and parted from you for a moment, in which you made sure to smooth a fallen strand of his back up. He shook his head, "You don't need to do that. I can take care of myself." You gave him a look, "So can I and still you help me out all the time and give me gifts." "Yes, but..." "But nothing."
Again, you kissed him, this time cupping one half of his face while your other hand interlaced with his. Wanting to be even closer to in, you pulled away a little and slowly moved your tongue over his bottom lip, getting tugged towards him and soon feeling his tongue on your lips. The two of you hadn't had sex yet but this part you were already confident in.
After a few seconds, his tongue started moving a little faster and you needed to press closer to him. Your legs bumped together...and then you felt how hard he was. "Tho—Tommy..." "Yes?" He peppered kisses from your mouth to your jawline. "Do you want to do something about..." He reached the place behind your ear. "About your..."
The kisses stopped when he became aware of his body's reaction. He hadn't meant to... "You don't have to do anything, darling." He straightened his back. We can forget about it." "What if I want to make you feel good?" "Th-there's no need."
His sight (uncharacteristically flustered) warmed your heart. "If you don't want to, we can just continue kissing." His first time should happen at the right time. "But I would very much like to thank you for the nice things you did for me. Not to forget your actual work. Everyone thinks you're the one making people work too hard but the same could be said about Mr. Carson." He scoffed lovingly and asked, "I'm listening. What would you do?"
You thought about it. "I'll use my hands, if that's alright. You can show me what you like..." He blushed. "Or I can try and see what you like for myself." You took his hand into yours. "What do you say, Mr. Barrow?" A small smirk grew on his lips. "I say we try it. I do deserve a little break. There should be," he looked around the room, "there's tissues on the table."
You grinned and led him to his bed. "Good." He moved to unfasten his belt but you stopped him in his tracks. "I'll do it for you. You've helped enough other people take off their clothes. "Fair point. But they were paying me." "Oh, Thomas. Always a point to make. Now sit back, relax, and enjoy." You removed his belt and set it down on a small table. "Tell me if something doesn't feel right." "I will." That you believed.
You opened his trousers and moved them down, then, stroking his thighs, slowly took off his underwear so that his cock was finally free. You tried not to stare for too long but he caught you, "What, that impressive?" Mouth watering a little, you laughed softly. "You look good everywhere I've seen you." Knowing that you'd seen him change, his breath hitched. No one had ever told him that. He hoped to convey how glad he was with the way he looked at you in return.
You stared back and then slowly wrapped your hand around his shaft, moving further towards the tip, then spreading some pre-cum over the base and getting accustomed to the feeling of him. His heart rate picked up in a matter of seconds. "Everything alright?" you asked. "Alright?" He huffed. "I won't last a minute." "You don't need to. This is just for you." "But I don't...I don't deserve it." "You," you stroked him in time, "are so good to me." He caressed his cheek with your free hand, looking into his greyish eyes. "Don't ever forget the good you're capable of, Mr. Barrow."
Thomas felt ready to cry, your words were so important to him. He buried his head in your shoulder while you continued your mix of soothing strokes over his face with arousing ones up and down his cock. You felt something wet on your neck and realized that he was crying. "Shh, I've got you. You deserve to relax and feel good things." Starting to pick up your pace, you placed kisses onto his head until he felt ready to lock eyes eyes with you. He murmured something about being close, giving you enough time to grab a tissue so you wouldn't make a mess.
As you stroked him with a tighter grip, your boyfriend gasped and made a sound similar to a whine, which made you lean closer to drink in noises you'd never heard from him. "Not only do you look good but you sound good, too." Another noise, this time lower. You took in his widened pupils and noticed that one of his hands was clenched tightly. "I can't believe I have such a good boyfriend", you whispered. Three seconds later his whole body went stiff and he moaned while you continued lightly stroking him and making sure not let his cum get onto his clothes or bedsheets.
After you'd cleaned him up, he made a move to lie down but stopped, taking a few breaths and trying to compose yourself. "Do you want to lie down for a bit?" You let yourself recline in his bed. He chuckled. "I see what you're doing." "And are my attempts at making you relax successful?" He smiled. "Very much."
*🧡*🧡*🧡* Author's note: This might very well be my first and last Thomas fic since Downton Abbey isn't one of my current fandoms. Nevertheless, let me know what you thought of this. I for one like seeing Thomas happy and loved ❤

A treat from the Butlers Pantry;; MINORS DNI
“Would you be ever so kind as to get the middle of my back? I can never seem to reach.” Lord James asked as he held out the soap to his butler, Thomas. Thomas sat the towel that he was preparing, down upon the basin, and walked over to the bathtub, careful that he didn’t sleep on the steam-tiled floor. Adjusting the sleeves of his shirt so they wouldn’t get wet, he bent down upon his knees as he took the soap from James's hand. As requested, Thomas slathered the soap over James’s back where he couldn’t reach, running both soap and fingertips over the bare skin of the Lord that he serves. Both men were quiet. James, leaned forward slightly to allow Thomas full access, focusing on how good Thomas’s fingers felt against his skin. It wasn’t the first time he had asked Thomas to wash his back. Nor would it be the last. Before Thomas could move his hand away as he finished cupping the water and gently splashing it over James’s back to remove the soapy residue, James grabbed his wrist and guided it to his chest and then beneath the water. “You missed a spot, Thomas.” Thomas’s lips lifted in a smirk as his fingers brushed against something quite hard. “Seems like someone’s enjoying their bath.” Before James could answer, his lips parted as he let out a sharp gasp as Thomas’s fingers wrapped around his length, giving it a gentle squeeze. James was too ashamed to admit how long he had lusted for this moment without doing anything about it. James’s head tilted backward and rested on Thomas’s shoulder, quietly suppressing little gasps against the material of Thomas’s uniform. It didn’t help that Thomas’s velvety voice was encouraging James on, “That’s it, My Lord, let me take care of you.” As gentle as his voice was, so was the painstakingly slow movement of his hand. Squeezing up... and gently squeezing down. This wasn’t the first time Thomas performed extra services for his lord, nor would it be the last. Thomas didn’t mind. Not as ideal as he’d like it to be, this was the easiest and safest option. They were never disturbed during James’s bath-time. It was the ideal opportune moment for the two extremely forbidden lovers….

Downton Abbey - The Story of Emma Barrow
Thomas Barrow x Emma Barrow
Sneak Peek
You can already find 30 chapters on Ao3, Fanfiction.net and Wattpad. 😉
Sitting on the floor, Emma played with her wooden figures. Every now and then, the hall boys and housemaids complained that she sat in the way, but that didn't stop the young girl from continuing to play. It was Anna who immediately recognized the soldier, "Emma, look who's here," she spoke gently. Emma looked up, her eyes scanning the room. Two housemaids sat at the table, doing their needlework. Beside them sat Anna, and behind her stood Daisy. On the other side stood Mrs. O'Brien and a man in a soldier's uniform, who revealed a warm and heartfelt smile.
Emma stared at him with her mouth half open, before a huge grin formed on the face of the 5-year-old. "Daddy!" she exclaimed excitedly. She immediately jumped up from the floor and ran straight into the waiting arms of her father, who crouched down to her level. "There's my little dwarf," he smiled and wrapped his arms tightly around her. Emma's tender arms wrapped around his neck as she pressed her face firmly against his chest, "Daddy, I missed you so much," the little girl confessed.
"I missed you too!" he replied, planting a kiss on her cheek. It had been two and a half years since he last held his daughter in his arms. Three birthdays he had missed. And if it hadn't been for Mrs. Hughes, his daughter might not even recognize him anymore. But the housekeeper made sure to show Emma a picture of Thomas and read his letters to her before bedtime.
"I missed you more," Emma stubbornly declared, "And I love you very much, Daddy!"
Thomas felt like bursting into tears, but certainly not in front of all his former colleagues. But that one phrase, "I love you," he hadn't heard it in what felt like an eternity. And suddenly, that very phrase was said to him, and he couldn't bring himself to return his child's affection. Instead, he pressed another kiss on Emma's cheek before resting their foreheads together. At least the others couldn't see his overwhelming emotions. Emma's small hands touched his cheeks. Perhaps the child was just as overwhelmed as he was. Emma pressed her head against his chest once again. Despite not seeing each other for so long, she instantly felt safe in his arms.
"You've grown up," Thomas remarked gently, "How old are you now? Three? Four?"
"No, Daddy," she giggled, "I'm five years old!" and she showed him all five fingers.
"Five?!" Thomas marveled, "Then you're a big girl!"
"Yes! I'll be going to school next year!" she explained proudly. As neither Thomas nor Emma wanted to break free from their new familiar embrace, he lifted the child in his arms and positioned her comfortably at his hip. After all, he had to show what a great father he was. Lady Grantham had made some connections for him so he wouldn't have to return to the front. One of those connections was that he was a single father who hadn't seen his child in a long time, which made a position - especially due to his injury - at the Downton hospital more fitting.
"What's wrong, my little dwarf? Why are you so sad all of a sudden?"
"I don't want you to leave," she sniffled, burying her face deeper into Thomas's shoulder, "Please Daddy don’t ever leave me again!"
"That's good because I'm staying in Downton."
"Really, you're staying?" she asked hesitantly.
"I'm staying," he confirmed with a nod, though his child wasn't convinced by his words. With his finger, he gently booped her nose, "You can believe me. I won't leave you again!" Thomas was satisfied with her more or less approving nod and shifted his gaze to the circle of housemaids and kitchen maids.
"Where is William?"
"He's in training for the army," Daisy explained.
"I thought he died out of love for you," Thomas chuckled.
"That's mean. You‘ve just returned," Daisy shook her head in disbelief. Emma remained quiet in the newfound familiar position in her father's arms. She didn't move much or speak. She simply listened to him. The voice she hadn't heard in two and a half years, and yet it sounded so familiar. And then there was the strange but familiar smoky scent.
"Imagine Carson without his footman, like a circus director without his little horse," he grinned mischievously.
"We don't need your cheekiness here. Thank you very much, Thomas," Mrs. Hughes suddenly appeared behind them. Emma gave the housekeeper a big smile as she wrapped her arm around her father's neck, who didn't look in the housekeeper's direction once.
"I apologize, Mrs. Hughes, but I am no longer a servant. I receive my orders from Major Clarkson."
The older lady let out a soft groan. Emma didn't understand what was so bad about the sentence her father told. A circus without a horse would only be half as spectacular.
"Who is that?" Thomas asked, nodding his head in the direction of a new housemaid who giggled.
"Ethel, the new maid," O'Brien explained.
"When I saw you out there, I didn't know you were a former footman," Ethel remarked.
"I'm one who made it out," Thomas replied.
"That gives us all hope."
"Ethel, you'll assist with the luggage. Sir Richard will be arriving soon," Carson's voice rang out.
"We have a visitor, Mr. Carson," O'Brien pointed out.
"I've seen him. It's about time you picked up your child. Did you think we're an orphanage?" Carson retorted, marching off.
"Where is Mr. Bates?"
"Gone. Replaced by Mr. Lang."
"Well, not all the changes were disadvantageous," Thomas said, glancing over at the housemaid, Anna.
At that moment, Mrs. Patmore appeared, placing a plate of pancakes on the table. Ethel reached out her hand and promptly received a slap, "Hands off! The pancake is for Emma," the cook explained. Not only did Emma politely request a pancake, but she was also still quite small for her age, which made Mrs. Patmore keen on ensuring the child was properly nourished, including pancakes with jam filling. Emma grinned mischievously and stuck her tongue out at Ethel.
"Don't you have a job to do?" O'Brien snapped. Ethel rolled her eyes, complaining that she was a housemaid, not a footman, and she didn't see why she should perform the duties of a male servant as she left the room.
Thomas seated Emma on one of the nearby chairs. The pancake had already been divided in half—for easier eating, of course—and Emma gleefully reached for the half where the jam was already oozing out. In seconds, the child had smeared her hands, sleeves, and mouth with the red jelly.
"Would you like a pancake too?" Emma asked politely. "It’s too much anyway." It was a fact that Thomas had already learned from the letters. His child ate far too little, and on some days, even the old Patmore would chase after her with a piece of bread just to ensure she had eaten a slice by the end of the day. Mrs. Hughes had already been to the doctor. "There's no cause for concern," Clarkson had said at the time. Some children were simply fussy and slow eaters, but as long as the child didn't show signs of malnutrition, it wasn't a major issue.
"We'll share the second one," Thomas said, carefully tearing the pancake in the middle.
"Why are you wearing a glove?" the girl asked, puzzled.
"I have an injured hand."
"Oh." At that time, Emma didn't question why her father had a injured hand. In fact, she will never ask him about it, as Thomas will one day tell her the story, but by then, Emma will be much older.

Dear Thomas,
For what it's worth, I'd have very much liked to have had a friend like you, when I was at my lowest point. And at other times too (even though I probably wouldn't have helped you scheme against Mr Bates)
I'm a good cook, so I might have enjoyed life Downstairs. Being Upstairs is a little too stressful, if you ask me.
dear reader,
If it is worth anything, there are times where I could have done good having friends to support me as well as tell me not to do some things. I have done some questionable things in my time here at Downton.
For what it is worth though, if you still need a friend. I am always here to lend an ear or a shoulder. I'm sure Mrs. Patmore would even let you join her in the kitchen to cook for the family, should you need some time away from your family.
I await to hear from you,
you friend,
-Thomas Barrow x

“Miss (Y/l/n)?”
You looked up from your stitching to see a man staring down at you.
Thomas Barrow.
His eyebrows were raised expectantly and you fought the urge to roll your eyes as he waited for you to acknowledge him.
“To what do I owe this pleasure?” You prompted.
“Mrs. Hughes is looking for you. Something about one of Her Ladyship’s evening gowns.”
You smiled your sweetest smile up at the footman-turned-valet.
“Well, I appreciate you passing along the message,” you said as you continued to hem the skirt you were working on.
Still, Thomas didn’t leave. “You’d best get going, don’t you think? Mrs. Hughes sounded pretty urgent and I wouldn’t want you to get involved in any unfortunate circumstance.”
“No you wouldn’t,” you muttered under your breath sarcastically as you got up and walked down the hall.
You and Thomas didn’t exactly get on, to put it mildly. Honestly you’d be surprised if Mrs. Hughes even needed you and it wasn’t all just a ploy by Thomas to waste your time. It wouldn’t be the first time, you thought sardonically.
From the moment you arrived at the Abbey, Thomas had began his life’s mission of forever tormenting you and making your work at Downton just a little bit harder. You had tried to be friendly to him at first, but to no avail for he seemed determined to let you know that you didn’t belong here.
Not that he was particularly amiable with any of the downstairs staff, but he seemed to especially have it out for you.
Most likely because you were the only one who challenged. He wasn’t the only one who could come up with sabotaging schemes.
And he did have so many bloody schemes.
Like the time right after you’d been hired when he’d convinced you that even though you weren’t a part of the kitchen staff, you needed to pick up some groceries for Mrs. Patmore. He sent you into town and you’d been lost for hours searching before you’d ran into Anna—bless her heart—who told you that the grocer was on the other side of town and the delivery wasn’t even supposed to be ready for another week.
You’d gotten him back (with some help from Mrs. O’Brien, who’d been feeling particularly miffed at Thomas that day and was willing to return the favor in any way she could) by shrinking His Lordship’s trousers.
The furious yet shocked look on his face—like he’d finally found a worthy competitor—still brought a smile to your face on particularly dark days.
Needless to say, your relationship had been filled with nothing but stiff quips, scathing remarks, and the occasional act of sabotage since then.
You reached your destination and peered into Mrs. Hughes office.
“Mr. Barrow said you needed me?”
“And Mr. Barrow would be right,” Mrs. Hughes agreed, turning to you and smiling wryly. “I can’t make heads or tails of this gown.”
You picked up the mess of fabric she had gestured to and set to work mending. The skirt you were working on could wait.
As you turned the dress over, you couldn’t help but smirk to yourself. Thomas? Truthful for once?
He must have some ulterior motive.
You’d be surprised if the skirt was still there when you got back—or if it didn’t have significantly more holes than when you’d left it.
₊˚ ✧ ‿︵‿୨୧‿︵‿ ✧ ₊˚
You walked into the servants hall the next morning, tired as hell from working on Her Ladyship’s gown all night.
You practically fell into your chair as Daisy came around and poured your tea. You thanked her absentmindedly as you began to nibble on some toast.
“Don’t you look nice, Miss (Y/l/n),” Thomas smiled at you but it was all but a compliment.
O’Brien smirked beside him and you narrowed your eyes at both of them.
“Nice of you to take notice,” you shot back.
“Is it a crime, to butter up one’s coworker?” He kept eye contact with you as he stirred his tea slowly.
“Depends who’s doing the buttering,” you leveled your gaze at his dark eyes.
“Speaking of butter, can we get any around here?”
A blond man sauntered into the room, taking a seat at the servants table and looking around at the present company. You felt Thomas shift across from you.
“I’m serious, just because we’re working class don’t mean we have to eat turnips and bread our whole lives.”
“I beg your pardon, I didn’t know the King of England was visiting,” O’Brien mumbled.
“Only saying,” Jimmy said. “I’d like to be able to eat what I like, when I like without being an earl or a duke.”
Jimmy Kent. The newest addition to the well-oiled machine that was Downton Abbey. And how could you forget? What, with all of the maids talking of nothing else since he arrived. You agreed that he was pleasant looking, but he was too much of a flirt for your liking.
He leaned back in his chair, as if daring anyone to contradict him.
“And what would you like to eat, Jimmy?” Thomas glanced over at him.
“All of England, if it pleases me.”
“I’ll put in a good word with Mrs. Patmore,” Thomas smiled at Jimmy and you were baffled at how it actually looked genuine.
In fact, Thomas had seemed to take a liking to Jimmy from the moment he arrived. He was about the only person who Thomas treated like an equal.
He must be using him, you thought. Trying to lure him into the trap of friendship before getting him fired or something of the like.
“You most certainly will not,” Mrs. Patmore answered, walking into the room. “The moment I start taking requests from you lot—”
“Is a moment that will not happen anytime soon,” Mr. Carson cut in from the head of the table glancing authoritatively at all of the servants finishing their breakfast.
“Why would Mrs. Patmore take your word anyway,” you looked to Thomas, “When anything you recommend is likely to be made of cement?”
“Feisty this morning, are we? Bold for the girl who, as I recall, left the Duchess of Frescershire quite unhappy with a dress that very likely felt like cement.” Thomas spat.
Your hand made a fist and you yearned to climb across the table and use it, but you checked yourself and only glared at the man across from you.
Thomas raised an eyebrow at you, standing up and glancing in Jimmy’s direction before turning around and heading down the hall.
“I think I’ll be going also,” O’Brien left her seat quickly, giving a small smile, her eyes following Thomas’s as she walked to catch up to him.
Likely plotting, you thought. Well, let them to it. The last thing you needed to be doing right now in your tired state was wasting energy thinking about Thomas Barrow.
You finished your tea, exiting the room and preparing for your days work. The girls were already dressed, so you could devote your time to downstairs work for the time being.
You passed Thomas and O’Brien in the hall, both of which quickly stiffened their posture and looked at you as you walked past, ceasing their very obvious confidence. But not before you heard the words certain, return, and Jimmy.
You didn’t even want to bother figuring out what they were gossiping about. Nothing good, you knew that. Best to stay out of it while you still could.
Thomas had nearly gotten you sacked a number of times and it wasn’t going to happen again.
₊˚ ✧ ‿︵‿୨୧‿︵‿ ✧ ₊˚
Sleep. It was all you could think about as you walked down the hall, having finished your days work and being ever so ready to hit the hay.
Everyone else had already gone to bed and you were the last to leave the servants hall. You were almost to your room, thinking of how to avoid waking the maid that you shared your room with, when someone called your name.
“Miss (Y/l/n)?”
“Mrs. Hughes.” You greeted her.
“Do you have minute?”
“I suppose I do.”
“I don’t like to ask you to do this, but Lady Mary has asked to have her purple evening gown from last season ready to wear tomorrow. I would ask one of the footmen as it’s through the men’s corridors, but you’re the only servant still awake—”
You internally cursed Lady Mary. Out loud you weakly said, “Straight away, Mrs. Hughes.”
You supposed it worked out for the best. As it turned out, Thomas had done something with the skirt you’d been mending—which just so happened to be needed by Lady Edith the next day—and it might give you a chance to see if he’d hidden it anywhere where he thought you would never go.
You didn’t say any of this to Mrs. Hughes though, you just smiled and walked in the opposite direction.
The male servant’s corridor was dark and you had trouble finding your way around without a lantern. You could make out the outlines of doorways, the doors all shut tight for the nighttime.
Now which door was the storage room?
You found it fairly quickly considering the circumstance and sorted through until you found the aforementioned dress.
Now, to reward yourself, you thought, a little snooping was in order.
You walked farther down the hall to what you assumed were the bedrooms.
Again, the doors were all closed and most likely locked. You cursed under your breath. You were staring to head back before your eye caught on a glint of light spilling into the hallway from the far end of the corridor.
You headed farther into the hall and you saw it. A door, propped open just enough to see that there was someone standing in it, their form outlined by the moonlight.
You crept closer, peering through the gap.
Thomas. His back was to you, but you could see him slowly inching closer to a bed on the far wall.
Except, he wasn’t alone. You could barely make out someone already sleeping. The room appeared to only have one bed, not a shared room, you thought.
Which meant—
You heard a cry. A rustle of blankets. You dared to open the door just a little bit more.
“What in the bloody hell—”
You looked up in time to see Thomas leaning over Jimmy, a look of pure horror and shock on the latter’s face. Thomas backed up quickly, while Jimmy stood in outrage.
“Did you just try to—” Jimmy’s surprise quickly turned to anger as he took a step towards the other man.
Your mind could hardly work fast enough, watching all of this unfold. You couldn’t believe what you were seeing. If this was what you thought it was—
You weren’t paying attention and you leaned forwards, your foot stepping on a creaky board—curse this old house—and alerting both men. Thomas turned around and his eyes landed on yours.
“Miss (Y/l/n), this isn’t what it looks like, alright? If you think I invited him, than you’re mistaken.” Jimmy looked flustered and you looked from him to Thomas.
Thomas opened his mouth, as if to say something. He looked pained and miserable.
You almost forgot yourself and felt bad for him.
He tried to say something again but instead just looked from you to Jimmy and then rushed out of the room.
You couldn’t do anything but follow him.
“Mr. Barrow—”
Abruptly, he stopped and turned around to face you. His posture was straight and he spoke as is if he were discussing the weather.
“You got what you wanted, didn’t you, Miss (Y/l/n)?”
You didn’t respond.
“I’m sure you’d just love to see me sacked, wouldn’t you?” Thomas bit out.
“Now—”
“Go on, tell Mr. Carson. Tell His Lordship. Tell the bloody King. Finally got an excuse to see the end of me. I reckon no one’ll even bat an eye, neither.”
Even in the dark, could see the pain and loneliness and fear in his expression that he was trying to hide with his harsh words.
You’d imagined the moment Thomas Barrow would get thrown out on his ear many a time. You’d always pictured the way you’d smirk as he left Downton for the last time. How you’d shout ‘good riddance’ for all to hear. You’d conjured up a million different circumstances just like this.
Except never like this. Not with Thomas weak, practically giving up. You couldn’t say it didn’t sound appealing, getting rid of him. You had the advantage. But suddenly, you didn’t want it.
“You must think more of me than that, Mr. Barrow.”
“I don’t know what you mean,” his voice was rough.
“I mean, I better get back with this dress ‘fore they send a search party.”
You started to walk past Thomas, but he stepped in front of you.
“So, that’s it? No victory speech?” Thomas glared down at you.
You had the urge to slap the look off his face but you took a deep breath.
“Victory over what? I didn’t see nothing to make me victorious. And by that, I mean I didn’t see nothing at all.”
You winked at him once leaving him standing there to process that as you hurried back in the direction you came.
You nearly laughed at the turn of events as you found your way back in the dark. You, covering for Thomas Barrow.
Never in your wildest dreams…
₊˚ ✧ ‿︵‿୨୧‿︵‿ ✧ ₊˚
The next day, Thomas could hardly look at you. Whenever he rounded a corner and found you on the other side, he stopped, looked like he wanted to speak to you, and then hurried on past.
You didn’t exactly expect him to bake you a cake or nothing, but you supposed a decent thank you was in order for saving his arse.
However, for all he wasn’t looking at you, he was looking at Jimmy. Except this time, instead of the look of friendship (or more, you supposed) it was now a look of apprehension.
Most likely afraid Jimmy would take his story himself to Mr. Carson.
And you didn’t see any reason why he wouldn’t. From the look of him, you thought as you sat across from him at the servants table, he looked ready to pounce.
Before you could stop yourself and advise against it, you walked up to him. “Jimmy, may I have a word?”
You couldn’t have your one act of kindness ruined by any loose ends.
As Jimmy followed you into the boot room you felt O’Brien’s eyes on you and promptly ignored them.
You got straight to the point, “I wish to talk about what happened last night.”
“I bloody don’t,” Jimmy responded, his eyes flashing, “it was awful, that’s what it was.”
“It was a misunderstanding,” you supplied.
The footman scoffed, “No, I think I understood perfectly alright.”
“What I mean to say is, I hope you don’t plan to make this misunderstanding something bigger than it is.”
“I have to tell the police, that’s what I have to do! I’ve been talking to Miss O’Brien and—”
“And I hope you see how ill advised that would be,” you finished.
He raised an eyebrow at you.
“You wouldn’t want to seem like you were mixed up in…something of that nature.”
“I don’t understand,” Jimmy said.
“You wouldn’t want anyone to think you’re in on anything disgusting, would you?”
Personally, you didn’t find anything particularly disgusting about the whole situation. You figured Thomas could kiss whoever he liked, for all you cared as long as it wasn’t you. But you knew that wasn’t going to work with Jimmy.
“Well no but—”
“Because if you go around spinning your story, someone down the line is bound to think you weren’t all against it, if you know what I’m getting at,” you said.
A look of horror passed Jimmy’s face.
“And besides I don’t think you’re the kind of person who would want to get a man fired, are you?”
He paused. “Why do you care if I get Mr. Barrow sacked? You don’t seem to get on with him anyways.”
“Oh, I don’t care what happens to Mr. Barrow,” you said with a smirk, “I just wouldn’t want this unfortunate incident to cause more of a quagmire for anyone than is necessary.”
Jimmy nodded, “Well, I wouldn’t want anyone’s reputation ruined for it I suppose.”
You smiled.
“And by that, I can’t pretend I don’t mean my own,” he added.
“Who knows,” you said, “you and Barrow might end up being friends eventually.”
“Friends?” He sounded incredulous, “I doubt it.”
“I think there’s more to Thomas than meets the eye,” you said cryptically. “Either way, think about what I said.”
He looked at you a moment, pondering, before nodding at you and leaving the room quickly.
You breathed out a sigh.
“Well, that was quite the speech, Miss (Y/l/n).”
You whirled around, finding Thomas standing in the doorway. How much of your conversation with Jimmy had he heard?
“And what are you doing here, Mr. Barrow? I can’t say following Jimmy around like a lost puppy is well advised anymore.”
Thomas clenched his teeth, looking at you. “It is a public place, isn’t it?”
You were both silent for a moment, as you calculated what to say next. Mr. Barrow beat you to it.
“I wanted to say thank you,” it looked like it cause him pain to say the words to you, his sworn nemesis.
“I would have been sacked if it weren’t for you, though I still can’t quite understand why you did it, and I thank you for it,” he finished. “I’m not sure I deserve it, but I’m grateful.”
“Well, I can’t say it’s not entirely out of self interest,” you said, straightening, “seeing as I can’t torture you if you’re gone, I saw no reason to be the one to end that.”
Thomas almost smiled. “That was quite an act of deception you pulled with Jimmy.”
“Would you believe me if I said I learned from the best?”
“Now, I’m not sure I deserve your compliments as well as your pity,” Thomas said.
“Really, there’s no need to think yourself so special. I was speaking of Miss O’Brien.”
Thomas let out a laugh and you couldn’t help but smile at him. He wasn’t all bad, you could see that. And you couldn’t imagine Downton without him now that you had been faced with the possibility.
“Well, I hope you don’t expect us to be friendly now,” you warned, to break the silence and whatever the spell that had fallen over you two was that made you act most unlike yourselves. Sharing a companionable silence? Never!
“I wouldn’t wish being your friend on my worst enemy, let alone take part in it myself.” Thomas brushed invisible lint off of his jacket.
You rolled your eyes at him, but it didn’t hold any real conviction.
“Well, I suppose I ought to get on with my work,” you said, moving past Thomas. “Wouldn’t want to get behind on your account.”
“You are a queer woman, aren’t you?” Thomas said not unkindly.
“I could say the same to you.”
You turned around, your tone more serious than it had just been
“And for what it’s worth, I don’t think you’re disgusting, Mr. Barrow.”
Thomas was silent.
“Horrid and self-serving and haughty and a pain in my rear end. But not disgusting.”
“I could say the same to you,” Thomas echoed your earlier statement.
You left without another word.
You didn’t think that you and Thomas would be companions, exactly. But you left that room with a greater fondness for him that you’d ever felt. You understood him more, if nothing else.
And you thought you could guess he felt a little of the same way too.

The next morning, as you began your day by checking the work you’d left out the night before, you found a new lump of fabric atop the pile.
You picked it up and let the cloth fall through your fingers.
It was the skirt you were working at from earlier this week. Barely recognizable, however. It was mended, certainly. The holes were fixed and the hem had been replaced. It looked brand new, better than anything you could have done.
Thomas.
It must have been him. You found yourself smiling to yourself.
“Well then, I suppose we’re even, Mr. Barrow, aren't we?” you mumbled.
Except for the fact that him taking it in the first place had delayed you getting the skirt to Lady Edith by a day.
But you’d get him back somehow, you thought, smiling.
You always did.

Thomas Barrow x sister!Reader - protect you
Could you maybe write a Thomas Barrow x sister!reader where she lip reads because she's deaf or hard of hearing and Thomas just has her back every step of the way despite what people say? It's okay if not. Thank you🤍 - Anon💜
Sitting at the table, you were reading from your book, immersed in your own little world only to be pulled out of it when you felt a tap of your shoulder.
Looking yup, you smiled at your brother as he sat down.
“Have you had breakfast?” He asked.
You gave a small nod of your head, and he rose a brow at you.
He took a plate from in front of him and passed it over to you.
“Don’t lie to me (Y/N), I never saw you down here.”
You gave him an apologetic looked, and he gestured to the plate, taking the book away from you so you would focus on eating instead.
While you were doing that, he went to reading his paper.
When Mrs Hughes walked in he kicked your foot and you looked up before standing up, giving her a smile.
“Good morning (Y/N). How are you today?”
You gave her a bright smile and she smiled back.
“Doing well today I see, wonderful. I will need you to do a few small repairs on her ladyship’s dress after you have eaten if you have time.”
You nodded and Mrs Hughes smiled, leaving the room.
Sitting back down, you turned to Thomas who looked at you.
“You’re welcome.”
With that you carried on teaching before going about your daily tasks and the jobs that needed done as soon as you could.
You tried your best between working and focusing on your surroundings so you knew people were there, but sometimes it was hard.
While most of the staff knew about your condition, some of them didn’t, so when it came to more servants coming for a huge event, they were oblivious to the fact you needed to be tapped on the shoulder if they wanted something.
So when Mr Bates was walking past the boot room and he saw people crowded around the door he stopped.
“Is there something interesting in there?” He asked.
“There’s a girl in there and she has yet to notice we’re here, so we are playing a game.”
The small group parted to show him who was in there and he stared in shock.
You had small bits of paper thrown around you, and they were clanging some shoes together behind your back while laughing.
“You know, I don’t believe it wise to be messing around with her like this.”
“It’s fine, we so have no idea who’s servant she is, nobody will admit to her being part of their staff.”
“I see.”
Mr Bates did debate on getting involved, but instead he walked away, and he went in search of somebody else to deal with the situation.
And soon enough he found who was looking for.
“Mr Barrow.”
Thomas looked up and sighed heavily.
“What?”
“You may want to come handle the servants who are currently using your sister as a game for their entertainment.”
Thomas immediately dropped what he was doing and stood up.
“Where?”
“Boot room.”
Thomas sprinted in that direction, and Mr Bates followed with Anna, Mrs Hughes a few others behind him.
They could hear the shouting before they even reached the hallway, and they turned around to see a young man crying as he held his nose while some others cowered in fear.
Jimmy was standing by a door, blocking them from running into the kitchen, keeping Mrs Patmore and Daisy out of the way.
“You think it’s funny to be picking on a young woman?!” Thomas yelled.
They stayed quiet.
“If I ever see you talking, or so much as looking at my sister again I will do so much worse than break your nose.” He growled.
“Mr Bates, please take the injured boy to see Mr Carson and tell him what has happened, the rest of you sit down, we will be telling the head butler and head housemaids for your respective employers about this, as well as his lord ship.”
The rest of the Downton servants helped ensure that the culprits were kept in one room and kept quiet, and Thomas turned to you.
He took some small paper balls out your hair, and placed his hand on your head.
“Are you alright?” He asked.
You nodded.
“We will have them all dealt with.”
You nodded again, and he sighed.
He could tell you were upset, he could see it on your face as he held out his arms.
Getting up, you tightly hugged him, and he hugged you back.
He was furious, but he knew you needed him to be with you, so he set aside his anger to be there to support you.
This was the exact reason he had gotten you a job with him, so he could keep you safe, and he was furious anybody would this it okay to use you for their own entertainment.
Yes, you may be different, but you were still human after all.
You were his little sister, and he would be dammed if he ever let anybody get away with treating you with anything but respect.
He didn’t care who it was, high status or not.
Nobody was going to treat you like that and he would be sure of it

So I’ve decided to rewrite this one bc I don’t like how it turned out, I won’t delete this one in case someone likes it, but I just thought I should give heads up, part two and three are already done but as I don’t like this one I’ll rewrite it then post the other parts <3
The New Worker [part one]
Pairings: Thomas Barrow x platonic!teen!reader
Imagine: Thomas Barrow has a soft spot for the new worker
Warnings: angst, fluff, none else I believe
A/N Writing Thomas Barrow fics instead of actual request 🤝 Me
so I have no clue if it’s bad or not but I always liked Thomas from the beginning, my father think it’s only bc he’s gay, but it’s not, sure obviously I like that they have a gay character in Downton Abbey but it’s not the reason for why I like him
Oh and btw I have no clue how old you must be to be a maid/footman so I just go with that you can be a teenager for the fics sake. Anyway I hope you all will enjoy this as it’s my first time writing for Downton Abbey
NOT PROOFREAD yet I was just too excited to post it. Sorry :) And sorry if the characters are a bit wrong I’m trying to get the right way to write them the next ones will be better
[Next Part] [Masterlist)
Thomas had no clue who you were but as soon as he saw you he knew you’d be the death of him. The way you radiated kindness without doing anything but to stand still said something about you.
You had walked into the servants hall with a nervous and anxious smile stuck on your face. He had waited for you to say something. Anything really. But nothing came out of your mouth except for a small hello which your voice decided to crack in the middle of, so it came out in a way similar to a stutter. Thomas guessed you were a very shy and anxious person. So instead he decided to take some steps forward as he said hello and asked who you were. For some reason his mean demeanor had dropped and he made himself sound as nice as he could without making it like those baby voices you make to babies.
You had glanced up to actually look at his face and he had a smile plastered on it which was far more confident than yours. And as he was the first friendly face you saw — Carson having previously let you in while he dealt with something else (he had a rather angry look on his face) — you decided to speak up as good as you could. You weren’t much for talking, being a nervous and anxious wreck at the moment. But you tried to speak without any cracks or wavering to your voice.
“I’m Y/N L/N… the new maid/footman” Your voice might not have wavered or cracked but you did pause for a rather long second before you said the last part. Thomas noticed but didn’t comment. He had heard that there would be a new maid/footman but he didn’t know that you would be this young. You couldn’t be older than nineteen but you looked younger than that, maybe around sixteen to eighteen. He didn’t quite know how you managed to get a job that high in the ranking at such an age but it was an accomplishment that’s for sure. So he voiced his thoughts.
“You seem awfully young to have gotten such a job” his voice had reverted slightly to his usual one but you didn’t seem to notice at least you didn’t comment on it, the way that he didn’t comment on your shy stutters.
“Well I-“ you got cut of by the booming voice of Mr. Carson who was done with the matter he had previously had to deal with. Now it seemed like he could deal with you and let you in on all the information. He told you to follow him. And you did as he led you to his office. Leaving the kind man as you called Mr. Barrow behind.
Thomas being his usual self went to stand outside of Mr. Carson’s office. He didn’t have anything better to do anyway he was done with everything for the moment. So it wouldn’t hurt to listen in on their conversation.
He could hear most of the conversation but some words were muffled by the walls between Thomas and the two of you. Thomas could just barely make out your faint voice as words stuttered out from your mouth. It was all the usual boring information. About how he wanted you to learn as quickly as possible, that you were to make no mistakes, no scandals for the family, and blah blah blah. Well that’s until Mr. Carson told you to go find the man you had talked to before. “Mr. Barrow is to give you a tour around the house today and introduce you to everyone as he is the only one we can spare at the moment” with that Thomas heard a chair scrape the floor and realised that Mr.Carson was about to open the door. Thomas hurriedly walked a few meters away from the door to make it seem like he was walking toward the two of you. Luckily for Mr. Barrow, the door didn’t open for a few more minutes.
However when it did open Carson’s booming voice called out to Thomas and he quickly made his way to Carson and you. Carson told Thomas what he already knew. That he was to see you around the house and introduce you to everyone.
As the butler turned and walked away Thomas heard a breathy sigh escape your lips before he turned to you. He guessed you thought the butler was scary. He couldn’t blame you though as the first thing you had seen of Carson was him angry at a footman who did something wrong.
Instead of commenting on it like he usually did with everyone else he decided to ask another time. “Well come on then” Your head turned to him at those words. Innocent anxious eyes staring up at him. He thought you looked more like a child than a teenager at this moment (which would turn out to be a lot of moments in the future). He couldn’t help but to smile your way before he stalked forward towards the kitchen. While he did so he pointed out everything and every person that walked by. So far you knew who Mr. Carson and Mrs. Hughes were, plus a few maids and who the footmen were.
Eventually you were both in the kitchen where Thomas pointed out who everyone was. The cook, Mrs. Patmore was a short, round older woman with ginger hair. The young kitchen maid was Daisy who seemed to get yelled out a lot for things she did wrong. She had smiled saying a “Hello” to you before she went back to work. While Mrs. Patmore said a hello before going back to work, yelling for Daisy to take out whatever was in the oven.
Next thing William who was the footman as well as Mr. Barrow beside you walked into the kitchen. As the observer that you were, you noticed that William literally had heart eyes Daisy’s way. William was a blonde young man who seemed rather nice, a bit clumsy but nice. Not like Mr. Carson who seemed rather scary and angry all the time. Mrs. Hughes seemed nice enough, stern but nice. Then there was Sarah O’Brien. She was a friend of Thomas but you didn’t like her that much, she didn’t seem that friendly and looked like a person who stuck their noses where they didn’t belong (being completely oblivious about Thomas). Anna however was a blonde woman who was way too nice. She was the second one to show you any kindness after Thomas. Mr. Bates was the one person you couldn’t quite make out an opinion on yet, he was pretty nice but he glared daggers at Thomas who did the same back to Bates.
But in the end it didn’t matter if you only liked Thomas or if you liked everyone. They all seemed to adore you, even Lord Grantham and his family seemed to adore you.
・*:.。. .。.:*・゜゚・*
As time passed by you were still as shy as when you got there. It seemed like you didn’t want to talk to anyone and you mostly stayed in your room. But people still adored you. Because whenever you did speak or was out of your room you spoke nothing but kindness. It was in your nature. No one had ever seen you as anything but kind at Downton Abbey. They adored how you could naturally be that way. How even though you didn’t like someone you still showed nothing but kindness towards them. That’s why it was so strange to everyone that you weren’t drawn to the second most kindest soul at Downton. You weren’t drawn to Anna. Rather you were drawn to one of the troublemakers, to one of the mean ones as they called Mr. Barrow.
You didn’t know why they called Thomas mean and a bully. He had done nothing wrong to you. Mr. Barrow had done nothing wrong whenever you were near him. He was like a saint in your eyes. He was the first to show you kindness at Downton, even though everyone did. Thomas was still the first. For some reason you trusted Thomas more than the others. Maybe because he was the first one you talked to at Downton. You didn’t quite know.
Thomas however was no saint. No he only acted kind whenever you were around. Everyone noticed it. Though they thought it nice of Thomas to actually be nice for a change it was still only when you were around. Why he was so kind to you they didn’t know but no one could resist but to adore you, not even Thomas Barrow. He could act as mean as he liked whenever you weren’t around but as soon as you came into the room he was kind, well kinder at least.
Maybe he thought that as you were here he could actually get a friend. That’s why he was nice to you. He needed a friend. And not just O’Brien who he plotted schemes with, no he wanted a real actual friend. That spot was open for you. And you were so overly oblivious to the real Thomas (well the real Thomas if you asked everyone else).
He saw it a bit strange however when you saw him for who he truly was for the first time. It was the time he had tried to get Bates sacked for the second time, which didn’t work. You had caught him in the process of it. Then a few days later you had seen him ask Daisy out when it was clear that William was about to do just that. Then a few days later he slipped up again when you were around. He started to slip up a lot and acted a lot meaner, just because he thought you would leave him when you knew who he truly was. But you didn’t. How wrong Thomas had been.
A few weeks later you found him outside while he was smoking. He had avoided you for the last couple of weeks and it had pained you so much that you had to eventually seek him out for yourself. You didn’t want to force yourself and Thomas into a friendship but it was what you wanted. A friendship with Thomas Barrow.
He was standing against a wall as he blew out smoke. It was how you usually found him outside. Smoking.
“Thomas” he turned around. Watching as you stepped towards him. Thomas stopped what he was doing as you stood in front of him. A kind smile plastered on your lips. He hadn’t ever seen you this confident before. It was a change from your usual shy expression.
Thomas let his grip on the cigarette go. When it fell to the ground he stepped on it twisting his foot so that the glow would go out. He readied himself to go inside when your hand stopped him. “Thomas please, I just want to speak” he stopped and looked down on the hand in his forearm. Then he turned around to you and waited for you to speak. He didn’t like ignoring you but he thought it better than to hear your voice tell him that you didn’t want to be his friend anymore. He was so wrong about that. If he had let you talk a lot sooner he would have known that you were still friends. “I just- I” you were back to your shyness again as Thomas stared you down. “I hope we could still be friends, I- I know you probably don’t as- as you have been ignoring me, but I do want to be your friend- it seems like you don’t have a lot of those and- and I’d like to be one of them”
Thomas genuinely smiled. He hadn’t smiled in the last couple of weeks not since he started to avoid you.
・*:.。. .。.:*・゜゚・*
A couple days later after your talk with Thomas you went to Thomas once more. Mr. Carson had told you to fix a clock. No one else could be spared so he against his wishes had left it to you. But as you had no idea on how to do it you needed to ask for help. And as Thomas was the only person you really trusted you went to him. Hoping for your life that he knew how to fix a clock.
Luckily he did. He told you that his father used to be a clockmaker and he used to work as a child for his father. So he obviously helped you. But had it been anyone else he would have told them to ask someone else, as he had a lot of tasks to do that day that didn’t involve fixing clocks.
It was how Anna had found you two. Fixing a clock while Thomas was supposed to clean all the silver with William. Anna had previously been looking for Thomas for William who was now halfway done with the silver. But Anna didn’t want to destroy one of the happy moments Thomas had. Because for once he actually smiled. Not the polite servant's smile. No an actual smile that went to his eyes.
You had messed something up and Thomas and you were now laughing as he had to help you fix it. The two of you talked a lot. Your voice might still be quiet but you did talk without stuttering. Which Anna thought was good as it meant you had someone who could help you boost your confidence even if it was the troublemaker Thomas Barrow.
Eventually Thomas saw Anna and his demeanor changed instantly. His once smile turned into his normal servant expression. He glared a bit at Anna as he realised she had been standing there for a while observing how he was with you. How he was so soft on you as he had talked with a kind voice and as he listened patiently to every word you said.
He patted you on the back and told you the last step before he went up and went away to do his duties.
After that time it seemed like you were less afraid to talk. You started to talk with people more and be out of your room a bit more. But still you only ever really talked to Thomas. You might have a bit of small talk with others. But nothing compared to your talks with Thomas. He always knew what to say to you. He always boosted your confidence. And he might have been a bit jealous the first time he saw you have a conversation with someone that wasn’t him. But what you only ever did with Thomas was ask him questions. Every question you had was asked to Thomas. And Thomas happily answered all of them.
It was still so strange for everyone to see you and Thomas together. Thomas was like a whole new person. But he wasn’t. No, you just brought out Thomas without all the walls. Thomas who didn’t have walls to protect him from everything. He didn’t need to be scared that he wasn’t accepted by you that he didn’t fit in. Because no matter what you’d still be there with him. And Thomas knew that so he let the real him show for you, the hurt, the kind, everything. Thomas protected and comforted you as you have protection and comfort to him. He might not want to admit it but he did have a soft spot for you and if anything happened to you he didn’t know what he would do.

Hello. My name is Lady Rose and this is my Downton Abbey blog, which is mostly catered towards our beloved gay butler, Thomas Barrow. Please understand that this is an 18+ blog, Minors DNI.
Another Era is a Downton Abbey AU that is currently a work-in-progress where a few minor changes have been made to the canon universe. Please keep in mind that this is my lil corner of the internet, my lil fanfiction world.
Downton Abbey; Another Era introduces a new aristocratic member, Jameson 'James' Matthews. He is only currently a day old in creation, so nothing notably has been worked out other than the fact that he and his butler, Thomas Barrow, are in a secretly forbidden romance.
Due to my laziness, you'll likely see snippets of their romance in a bunch of one-shots rather than a multi-chapter story. However, feel free to ask questions or send in prompts.
I'm also quite new to the fandom and have not met anyone. So please, I ask kindly of your patience.
Below, you will find the Butlers Pantry, which will server as the Masterlist of ficlets. We can find all sorts of treats in the Butlers Pantry. For now... go see a sneak peek of a rather spicy treat.
