Now, people think Ice is coddling him. That he thinks Mav can do no wrong. They see Maverick all smug-like, standing safely behind Ice's shoulder and maybe even pulling a face and think Ice never makes him face consequences. That's not true.

.5 seconds after they're alone, Mav will be appropriately apologetic, as he SHOULD BE and he knows it. He's not sorry he did it because he knew it would work, it was the option with the best chance of success but riskier than his orders, and he was the only one to think of it. And they both know he's going to do something like it again. No, he apologises for Ice having to throw his weight around to defend him.

Ice isn't thrilled with Maverick's penchant for reckless stunts; but he knows Mav does it because Mav knows he can do it, ICE knows Mav can do it AND that it's usually the best course of action. Still, rules are rules and Mav has a gaggle of adoring fans baby pilots that would follow his lead always so boundaries need to be kept firm. If only for the fact that the navy needs Mav's out of the box thinking so Ice needs him to stay in the air.

So yes. He'll read Mav the riot act. But in private, because he'll be damned if he gives other people the satisfaction of them seeing him reprimand his wingman when the outcome was positive on the whole.

I like to imagine that Ice first got sick in his late thirties, and spent most of his 40s and 50s rising through the ranks despite his illness and he raised Bradley with the men he loved despite it too.

I know it's been a while but I'm finally back at writing this story!!

Right now, I'm writing chapter 4 in which Chris, Ice's son, comes to visit and finds out about his dad being sappily in love with his Uncle Mav.

So... may I introduce you to: Christopher Kazansky

He's 24 years old and studies at Havard.

Basically everyone (including his parents) calls him Chris, except for his little sister who calls him Toffee.

He's very protective (in a good way) over his sis and has a very good relationship with his dad too despite Ice being deployed away from home for rather large parts of his childhood.

His parents got divorced when he was already studying so he grew up with both his parents, his sister - and Bradley who lived with them whenever Mav was deployed somewhere that wasn't San Diego which was basically all the time. Bradley has always been to him like a big brother and to this day, they are still friends, even after Bradley and Mav had their big fight.

For him, Mav is Uncle Mav and Slider is Uncle Slider, no matter how childish it may sound to still call them that.

He spits the writhing fish down at Mike’s feet, the man looking at him in something akin to shock.

(In ten years, Ice will make jokes about how Mav must have been raised by wolves — but you see, he is entirely correct).
