Celebrate New Year's Eve in Tokyo: A Blend of Tradition and Modernity
Tumblr media
Tokyo uniquely blends modern vibrance and deep-rooted traditions during New Year's Eve. From visiting temples for the first prayer of the year to enjoying dazzling light shows in Shibuya and Roppongi, the city has something for everyone. The countdown events are a spectacle, with the city's vibrant lights and energetic crowds creating an unforgettable atmosphere.
Traditional New Year's Eve Experiences
Temple Visits for Hatsumode
Book your trip with us.
One of the most cherished traditions in Tokyo during New Year's Eve is Hatsumode, the first visit to a shrine or temple of the year. Locals and tourists flock to famous temples like Senso-ji in Asakusa and Meiji Shrine in Harajuku to pray for good fortune in the coming year. The serene atmosphere and beautiful architecture make these visits memorable.
Omikuji and Ema
While at the temples, don't forget to participate in omikuji (fortune-telling) and ema (writing wishes on wooden plaques). These traditional activities add a touch of personal reflection and hope to your New Year's Eve celebrations.
Modern New Year's Eve Celebrations
Countdown Events
Tokyo's countdown events are legendary. The city's vibrant districts, like Shibuya and Roppongi, come alive with dazzling light shows, live music, and energetic crowds. Whether at the famous Shibuya Crossing or the trendy Roppongi Hills, the countdown to midnight is an experience you won't forget.
Fireworks Displays
While not as widespread as in some other cities, Tokyo does offer fireworks displays to ring in the New Year. Popular spots include:
Tokyo Tower: Enjoy a panoramic view of the city along with a stunning fireworks display.
Odaiba: This man-made island offers a beautiful backdrop for fireworks, with views of the Rainbow Bridge and Tokyo Bay.
Unique Cultural Experiences

Toshikoshi Soba
A traditional New Year's Eve meal in Japan is Toshikoshi Soba (year-crossing noodles). Eating these noodles is believed to bring good luck and longevity. You can find Toshikoshi Soba at many restaurants and even street food stalls throughout the city.
Fukubukuro
Book your trip with us.
On New Year's Day, many shops offer Fukubukuro (lucky bags) filled with mystery items at a discounted price. It's a fun tradition that adds excitement to the start of the new year.

I guess I already knew this, but the other day I asked my coworkers (mostly from South America) how they were dealing with the US so far. Most patients in clinic here are dealing with a number of social and mental issues in addition to the physical.
My coworkers said "the US is a terrible place to be poor in," basically - in a poor country it's still possible to exist, but in the US, everything's catered to at least a middle class. You can't live anywhere, food is expensive, you need to support the costs of a car (in 95% of cases), sudden medical costs will bankrupt you, you can't pay for college, etc. At least in their countries you can afford to live, even if you can't live an amazing lifestyle

Taking the monorail showed so many beautiful landscapes in Tokyo and distracted us from the fact we missed our stop, and it made me think about to different ways Japan has set up their public transportation for areas that mostly foreigners take versus the areas that mostly locals take. The monorail and skyline trains connected to the airports allow you to see so much of the landscape in Japan while the local trains are almost all hidden deep underground and are very dark unless you are going out of town, which again has a connection to people traveling through the country and are not only meant for the local people who live here. Makes me want to see more of the areas that they may not expect/want foreigners to see.

I think actually the only way to reconcile the ace attorney japanifornia situation is to replace LA with tokyo
#sorry had this thought and it made me laugh so hard#the idea of like tokyo maintaining its public transport infrastructure and general vibes while norcal is. norcal.#the intense split of norcal residents that are like WHY IS LA/TOKYOS PUBLIC TRANSIT SO MUCH BETTER#and norcal residents that are like ‘Um Actually. bart is doing great so-‘#also just so funny to me bc Tokyo vs LA is not even close. its not even close !!!#which wojld make the norcal socal divide even insaner#which is a good thing obviously#me shrinking the map of japan flipping and transforming it until tokyo and LA match up like LOOK IT WORKS#i think this can also lead to fun situations to fix the germ-erica problem too where we put new york (and like half the east coast)#in germany/europe#bam problem solved#‘wait so was edgeworth in the us or germany?’ ‘yes’#‘how would we fit the greater tokyo area-‘ arizona and nevada become greater california next question#like im already a firm believer khurain could be in the ie if it really wanted to be#but u ever been like#even 20 miles out from tahoe in the wrong direction#perfect situation for khurain over there i prommy#anyways if u couldnt tell its almost 3am and this is still making me laugj#sorry just imagining LA being tokyo and then u like#still live in sac lmfao. can u imagine.#la is tokyo and ure stuck in a town that still believes in state of jefferson 😭😭😭😭#fuck dude norcal (actual norcal not the bay) could defffff have khurain too tbh#i feel like those posts that are like ‘localization forces u to accept khurain is just somewhere in california’ are not from cali#like i promise u accepting that wasnt that hard#those posts r still funny tho

Oh yes that is true! Mostly. About a century ago, Takashi Hara was assassinated there on his way to a party conference in Kyoto. Then a decade later, Osachi Hamaguchi was on his way to a military exercise in Okayama when he was shot. He initially survived, but died within a year when the wound became infected.
So this was actually an even more tumblry post than I thought: trains, crabs, and the death of major world leaders....!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Loving this story from the very tumblr intersection of crabs and trains. I was just at JR Tokyo Station the other day—I wish I'd known then! Here is the crab in question:

And apparently they've found similar fossils at the Mitsukoshi department store in Nihonbashi, the Odakyu department store in Shinjuku and the Tobu Department Store in Ikebukuro. How did I go so long without knowing this??
