Misreading Touka (Tokyo Ghoul Meta)
For some reason, I've been seeing more dung being thrown at Touka's characterisation in the series, and since I've been wanting to write a meta for a while now, I decided to do a short one addressing some of the criticism I've seen around. This won't go into everything, of course -- the series is far too dense with analytical potential and I am a busy bee. Just know that I do want to dive deeper into Touken/Kanetou at a later point.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Touka is not reduced to a simple, meaningless housewife, and I do not understand why this perspective is used to undermine her character so often in the fandom. For the sake of this argument, I will be mostly focusing on her characterisation in ;Re, as that is where this criticism is mostly rooted. Yes, she is less active in the first part of the second series, but between all the other characters, events, and plot points, it is bizarre to me that people see so little in Touka, despite all that she does.
I could dive into how Touka as a whole symbolises key themes throughout both series, and how that relates to Kaneki’s development, but I think I will save that for a separate meta. For now, I just want to discuss how Touka is positioned in the second series, and how it does not weaken the characterisation Ishida set up in the first.
Following the end of the first series, which set its tone as a tragedy, Touka opens the ;Re café to act as a refuge for ghouls, just as Yoshimura did beforehand. To clarify, Yoshimura saved Touka from her miserable life on the streets, giving her the chance to live with some semblance of normalcy following the tragic consequences of her childhood. And now, as an adult, and with Yoshimura gone, Touka strives to recreate that environment once more. There are those that think she has done this for Kaneki and Kaneki alone, but that is clearly not the case, even if she does hope for Kaneki’s return one day; she allows Nishiki to take refuge there while he tries to find Kimi, she saves Tsukiyama after the Rosewald operation, and before anyone argues that she was still not directly involved in either case, she actively takes part in Ayato’s mission to save Hinami. It is there that she then sees Kaneki and allows him a place to stay too, following his battle with Arima. She even provides Akira and Amon a place to stay, reconciling their differences in the process, (underrated chapters, I think).
Up until this point, Touka has been forced to ‘live while losing’, and whether she decides to fight or not, it is an unavoidable outcome when it comes to war. She is simply trying to do what she can without trying to kill herself in the process – a flawed sentiment she has seen in her father and Kaneki before, and even to some extent, Ayato and Hinami.
She fights when she can, runs if she has to. She is forced to make this choice again and again, especially when the underground ward is attacked, and for the sake of her unborn child and other weaker ghouls, she must retreat if she doesn’t want all of them to needlessly die.
That said, it is not as if she leaves without trying to fight first, she just isn’t stupidly overpowered like her opponents, (and that isn’t a jab at Ishida, I’m simply clarifying that she can’t defeat these foes with just Hinami at her side). Even then, she manages to stand her ground for a long time, despite the pregnancy and her hunger. Moreover, her kagune has developed since the first series, and like Ayato, she’s able to create more advanced structures with her ukaku. You just have to read in between the lines to see that Touka has never allowed herself to grow soft in the years Kaneki was away, and that only now, during this battle, can you see more of her capabilities.
And when Kaneki is trapped within Dragon, she finally decides that she cannot lose him – she refuses to lose him, because to do so would bring on too much despair. Just as Kaneki has prioritised Touka, Touka, too, will prioritise him, and so, even with her exhaustion, she battles against Mutsuki, digs through the Dragon’s flesh until her fingers and nails break, and almost succumbs to grief at the thought that he was already lost to her. The chapter is overlooked far too often, her desperate determination conveying to the reader the importance of love as a driving force.
Again, we saw this with Kaneki, who pushed himself past his limits in hopes of reaching Touka. Whether you like it or not, love is a powerful thing, and that has been shown throughout the series with many, if not all the characters. And for Kaneki and Touka, their love is their hope, and to lose that love is to lose their hope. So they fight, again and again, for each other and the light they bring into each other’s lives.
Now I can argue all day about how Touka is far more active in the series than people care to admit, but I do not think that is why Touka is labelled as a housewife. I’ve been in the fandom for a long time and this label has been around long before their relationship was canonised, and I think it’s to do with the fact that Touka is clearly more feminine in ;Re.
I’ve already explained that in terms of action, Touka still has plenty of moments to speak of, and personality-wise, I really don’t think she’s as different as people claim her to be. Yes, she’s calmer, but that shouldn’t be seen as a bad development. She’s an adult now, and with adulthood comes maturity, (or it should, anyway). She doesn’t need to fight anyone and everyone to prove herself, that is simply a childish perspective to take. Besides that, she’s still curt in the way she talks, is sarcastic and blunt, though not as harsh as she was before, and she still carries herself with plenty of pride and dignity, which was what was so appealing about her in the first series. Ffs, she confronts the whole CCG and tells them to eat shit because their arguments were annoying her. It’s ridiculous to me that people think she is a shadow of her former self, when there’s plenty of great moments involving her.
As for her more maternal depictions, that is also something that has always been present, if you take a moment to connect the two series together. She was forced to grow up quickly when she became responsible of Ayato, and she effortlessly took Hinami under her wing after the death of her parents. This is an attribute that she continues to exhibit throughout ;Re, watching over the children and trying to comfort them. It’s a touching image, one that circles back around to her pregnancy. And to deem this progression as detrimental is ratherstrange to me. In a time when we see women as strong and powerful for everything we represent – our hardships, both physically and emotionally, as well as our strengths – why is it seen as weak when female characters are utilised to represent the strength of womanhood. Because she’s a woman married to a man? Don’t be so childish. If you respect her characterisation at all, you will acknowledge how she continues to exhibit her strengths as an adult, whether that be in battle or beyond it.
After all, Ishida could have easily written it so that she is no longer involved in anything past the discovery of her pregnancy. Except he doesn't, and instead, she fights even more, even harder, in spite of her pregnancy. Because of her pregnancy. And yet, this is somehow weakens her character? She is quite literally going beyond her limits to fight for her future, I see nothing weak in that.
It might be that readers dislike how she changes aesthetically, and that’s fine, but from that comes arguments that excuse why they don’t like her character. I could argue against every little argument I’ve seen about her, but at the end of the day, I feel like most of these points are made just to excuse a personal preference. And that is not an effective use of critical reading. You can’t make the story something it isn’t, and you can’t assume Touka was going to be a character she wasn’t written to be. If you don’t like that or disagree, then maybe this series isn’t for you and it’s time to move on. For now, at least, please give her characterisation the respect she deserves. Her role is so much more than the shallow labelling this fandom tends to give her.

Heyy
Can i please ask for something angsty fluff with Ayato and a human s/o?
MUST’VE BEEN THE WIND
Reblogs and Comments are greatly appreciated!!
__________________________________________________________________________
Fandom(s): Tokyo Ghoul
Pairing(s): Kirishima Ayato x Reader
Word Count: 1.4k
Genre(s)/Tag(s): Gender Neutral!Reader, Human!Reader, Angst to Fluff
Notes: Ayato is :re age in this!
Based vaguely on the song “Must Have Been the Wind” by Alec Benjamin
This occurs after the events of Tokyo Ghoul and Tokyo Ghoul :re!
So, minor spoilers for that! (Some stuff may be incorrect; I haven’t finished the manga and am looking at the Wiki for everything)
*TRIGGER WARNING FOR IMPLIED ABUSIVE RELATIONSHIPS* (not with Ayato)
__________________________________________________________________________
Ayato always prided himself on his hearing. Even for a ghoul, it was exceptional. He had always been able to hear even the smallest detail in a conversation. The rustling of clothes, the quick inhales and exhales, he could hear it all.
It made for awkward encounters in the apartments around him. Whether that was sex, arguments, or a combination of both, he could hear every syllable.
Earplugs became his best friend when he was home in his apartment complex.
At least… until he heard something about you.
What sounded like a glass shattering against the wall or floor sounded above Ayato.
With a frown, he paused his video game, and pulled off his noise-canceling headphones to listen better. He didn’t know much about you, only that you lived above him. You were the only one to welcome him into the complex when he moved into his little two-bedroom apartment.
He knew some vague information about you.
You lived in apartment 305B, just as he lived in 205B. You kept to yourself but always made it a point to wave to him when you passed each other in the halls.
You were cute, quiet, and, more importantly, you were human.
Someone shouted. Something about lying. And then you responded.
You sounded like you had been crying.
Another glass, more shouting, more crying. Ayato stared at the ceiling for a moment, debating, thinking, mulling his choices over. Then, he made a choice.
His game was switched off. He pulled on trousers over his boxer shorts and zipped up his jacket. He was out the door before he even knew what was happening.
What was he going to do? Fight your significant other? Kill them? He had put that all behind him, what with the incident with his brother-in-law last year. And while he hated the phrase, he considered himself a changed man. And that meant he would actually help humans in need.
A short elevator ride up to the floor above him, down the hall, third door on the right. He paused outside your apartment door, pausing from knocking on the door.
What was he doing?
Before he could think too much about it, Ayato took a deep breath and knocked.
You opened the door a moment later, sweater zipped up to your chin despite the humid summer heat. You swallowed thickly, shifting from side to side,
“Mr. Kirishima! How can I help you?” You said, the cheer in your voice obviously being fake. Ayato shrugged,
“Just wondering about the noise I was hearing. Is everything okay?” He said quickly, and you blinked, staring dumbly.
“Oh! The glass? Sorry, I’m just a bit clumsy! I didn’t mean to disturb you, I’ll be more careful—”
“I meant the yelling. Is everything okay?” He reiterated and watched your face fall.
“Must’ve been the wind.” You say quickly and go to shut the door. But Ayato can’t shake the feeling that something is terribly wrong. So, he wedges his hand in between the door and the doorframe and stops you.
“Oi! What's the holdup? Get back in here!” Comes another voice, and your expression twists in a brief flash of fear. It wasn’t on your face for long, but it was there.
And for whatever reason, it hurt Ayato’s heart to see it.
But before he can do anything, you shove his hand off the doorframe and shut the door hurriedly in his face.
The next time he goes up to your apartment, it’s a week later.
Ayato is woken up in the early morning by a slam of a door that rattles the walls of his apartment. Instinctively, he feels his kagune pop and fizzle underneath his skin, and he knows for a fact that his kakugan is turning his eyes into a nightmare of black and red.
He can hear some angry choice words coming from your partner, and the words make him grimace. No one should be talking about you that way. So, again, he rolls out of bed, throws some clothes on, and heads upstairs to your apartment. He doesn’t even bother to put shoes on.
You take a few minutes to open the door. And, like always, your sweater is zipped to your chin.
“I said I don’t want to talk—Oh… Mr. Kirishima… You heard all that then?” You trail off and peek around the corner as if waiting for your partner to come storming around the corner. Ayato nods,
“I heard the slam, at least. Everything okay?” Once you’re satisfied that your partner isn’t going to come back, you sniffle and shake your head.
“No… Everything is not okay. But I don’t want to bug anyone, so let’s just say that it all is alright?” You say and go to close the door in his face again.
But… Like last time… Ayato stops you.
“Want to go get coffee?” He blurts, and the door pauses, mere centimeters from shutting all the way. He sees your watery eyes peek out of the crack and swallows.
What was he doing?
He really shouldn’t get wrapped up in a human’s business.
The cafe is quiet, with few people, as you and Ayato take a seat at a booth. You order your drink of choice, and Ayato orders his usual go-to coffee. Black, no cream or sugar. Once you’re settled in with your drinks, you seem to relax, if only slightly. And in turn, that makes Ayato relax.
“So…” He starts and watches you hide a flinch. Your hands begin to shake.
“I don’t want to talk about it. Please, if only for a little while.” You whisper, but as always, Ayato’s exceptional hearing picks up on it.
And your tone of voice just breaks his disgusting black heart.
So… He shrugs, sips his coffee, and changes the subject.
“What do you do for a living?” He inquires, and your eyes shoot up to meet his own in shock. It's as if you’re surprised he actually listened to your plea.
When was the last time someone actually listened to you?
“I—I’m a teacher,” You say, and he feels his lips twitch in a small smile. You reminded him a bit of Hinami.
“What grade?” He asked, and you huffed out a quiet laugh, and his heart soared at the sound.
“I teach kindergarten. What about you?” At this, he pauses. Could he say what he actually did? Aogiri Tree wasn’t a thing anymore, nor was the CCG, but there was still a stigma around ghouls.
He then remembered the yelling at your partner. It was always about lies—lying about this and lying about that.
So he decided on the truth.
“I work alongside the Tokyo Security Committee with the United Front.” He said quickly and didn’t miss how you stiffened. Your normally floral perfume gained a sharp, bitter scent of fear, and he could hear how your coffee cup rattled in your hands.
“Are you a ghoul?” You whisper, and he nods,
“I am. Does that scare you?” He asks, and you nod honestly,
“But…” He glances up from his coffee and finds your gaze locked on your lap.
“But what?” You finally meet his gaze, and a single tear drips down your face.
“You scare me less than my partner.”
It’s at that moment that Ayato decides that he doesn’t want you to live like that any longer.
“Come with me.” He says quickly, and you frown,
“Pardon?”
“Come with me to the United Front. You’re a human, but they’ll take you in. I have a friend, Fueguchi Hinami. She’s a teacher as well and could use an assistant.” He implores you, reaching across in a moment of bravery to take your hand. You flinch but don’t pull away.
Instead, you seem to mull it over, nod to yourself once, and offer a watery smile.
“Okay.”

KISS MY BLOODIED LIPS.
— pairing ; kaneki ken x human!gn!reader
— summary ; you never expected to kiss one of the hated humanoid monsters, yet here you were. or: first kiss with him.
— cw ; don't worry he doesn't actually have blood on his lips, fluff, awkward first kiss, slight making out? est. relationship
only god knew why and how you ended up in a dark alley behind anteiku, but you were there and something was about to happen. you weren't dense, you could feel it in the way kaneki was looking at you – or rather, the way his gaze had dropped down to your lips more than once already. a gesture you reciprocated eagerly, until at some point you were just awkwardly staring at each other's lips.
you didn't know how to go from there, as you never kissed someone before. you weren't one to put much thought into what your first kiss would be like, but you always assumed it would be with a human. yet here you were, cornered by the ghoul you grew to adore.
no, kaneki didn't verbally tell you he wanted to kiss you, but you weren't oblivious; there was only one possible outcome to the position you were currently in, and you were afloat on the tight atmosphere. you couldn't wait, although you were incredibly nervous just as much.
"i-is this okay?" the half-ghoul asked, bringing up his hand to cup your cheek. kaneki gazed at you full of worry, as if one wrong move would break the spell and scare you away.
"mhm," you hummed, tilting your head to lean into his light touch a little more. you offered him an awkward smile, not knowing what else to say.
"i never did this before," kaneki confessed. "i guess i'm afraid of messing up, afraid of losing control, i don't know, i just–"
"only one way to find out, right?" you shrugged, trying to come off calm and collected. but your voice was a little shaky and uneven, giving away how nerves got a tight grip on you.
the boy with hair as pale as the moon visibly gulped, but something in his gaze hardened resolutely. it was as if he made up his mind, bringing up his other hand to cup your face completely and tilting your head to his favor. all physical distance was slowly being eliminated, the heavy anticipation palpable in the air between you. kaneki moved closer to you, barely daring to breathe as his eyes fluttered closed. you shuddered when his lips ghosted over yours, a fleeting touch that made both your breath hitch in your throat.
but the ghoul hesitated, froze in his movements, even drew back a little as his eyes opened anxiously. he was nervous, and it wasn't hard to figure out what was on his mind. after all, behind his soft lips rested the teeth of a deadly predator, and right now the hunter brought its teeth close to its prey.
"we can wait if it doesn't feel okay yet," you reassured him as fear rose in his grey eyes. "we don't have to do it right now, there's no rush."
"no, i want this," kaneki sputtered, a slight frown falling upon his features. "i'm just afraid of hurting you, one way or another."
"i trust you," you solemnly told him.
"you shouldn't," the ghoul shook his head.
"but i do," you countered. "kiss me, ken."
kaneki sighed, muttering something under his breath before he finally gave in. the final distance that separated you was eliminated as his lips met yours – tentative, brief, lingering for but a second before he pulled back. he watched you, and as you showed no signs of dismay he dove right back in. this time he kissed you with more fervor, more courage, his lips moving against yours in a somewhat uncoordinated rhythm.
but god, you were enjoying it. your hands found his sweater, fingers clawing at the soft fabric to pull him even closer to you. he was being careful, he was holding back, you could feel it. but you weren't going to ask for more – not now. you were beyond happy with what he was giving you already.
when he pulled back, he was panting lightly – and so were you. kaneki looked at you, grey eyes full of adoration. you couldn't help but break into a full smile, looping your arms around his neck and hugging him close. the half-ghoul was quick to reciprocate the gesture, pressing a chaste kiss to the top of your head as he held you lovingly.
"see? i can trust you," you giggled lightly, resting your cheek against his shoulder as you clung to him.
"just not too much, okay?" kaneki muttered, his breath rustling your hair. "i'm a monster, and as much as i love you, you'll never know when i mess up."
it was a peculiar love story the two of you had. humans were supposed to despise ghouls, their only enemy. and yet you fought through the natural boundaries, getting too infatuated with one of the hated humanoids and erasing the line that naturally stood between the hunter and their prey.
but it was okay. maybe kaneki didn't trust himself, but you did. and you knew you wouldn't regret it, ever. after all, love was stronger than his hunger, right?

daisy crown / reader x Jiro (Tokyo Debunker)
included characters: Jiro!
rating: SFW
warnings: um there's a bee visitor, but not described in detail. mostly this is just wholesome.
Quite a short fic!
You weren't in the habit of thanking Yuri for things, selfish and self aggrandizing as he was, but right now, you were thanking him. Even if he couldn't hear it.
He had kicked Jiro out of the lab, annoyed by his constant clarifications and suggestions on how to better perform an experiment. You were kicked out as well, not for your own suggestions but because you had no reason to be there to start with, sitting on an autopsy table and loudly sucking down a melting smoothie the entire time. Being a nuisance to the Mortkranken ghouls was in your job description so long as no one asked for proof.
Besides, Jiro didn't think you were a nuisance. He took regular breaks to talk to you and give you kisses and random tasks you were capable of completing mostly without risk or injury. You were like his unofficial union rep, if union reps got paid in kisses and teasing whenever they dragged a mangled corpse in and you jumped at the sight. It was fine by you, the kisses more than made up for the trauma.
Even so, you thanked Yuri because the sight in front of you was the cutest thing you'd probably ever seen in your life: Jiro, crouched down, picking flowers. The sun cast a little halo around his head and reflected in the lightest parts of his eyes. He had a basket where he was collecting them, flowers of all shapes and colors and sizes laid in an array next to each other. He was careful as he went, not picking anything that hadn't yet bloomed and not picking anything that was completely withered. A little bee flew around his head and inspected his flowers.
Jiro inspected it back, granting it a few seconds of his gaze as it buzzed around him. He let it be (ha) and returned to his flower picking. It seemed interested in his actions, and kept flying around in his general vicinity, sometimes landing on the very flower he was reaching for. You couldn't help but smile when he gave up on a flower that the bee was bumping into.
You kept yourself busy fawning over him and following a guide on your phone to make flower crowns. You wove the long stems of your daisies together, holding it above your head often to check for basic sizing. It was no neat thing you were crafting, but it held together remarkably well.
You focused on your craft until Jiro made his way to the bench you were sitting on and joined you. You smiled up at him as he sat down. “Did you get everything you needed?” You asked him.
He set the basket in his lap and responded, “Mostly. Some were out of season.”
You frowned consolingly. “Maybe we can check Rui's garden?”
Jiro looked at the flower crown in your hands, “We can.”
You held the crown up triumphantly. A few petals fell off onto your lap. “It's finished.”
“People have used daisies in medicine for their anti-inflammatory properties,” he told you, picking up a petal from your lap and rubbing it lightly between his fingers. He dropped it on the ground and it fluttered as it fell.
“Are they very effective?” You asked, leaning over him and putting the crown on his head. You repositioned it carefully until it sat balanced and even on his head. The white petals and green stems contrasted his dark hair nicely.
He watched you do it and made no effort to stop you, “No, drugs like ibuprofen are much more effective and accessible.”
You sat back and admired your work. Jiro had a daisy crown sitting on the top of his head and a basket of flowers on his lap. It was such a different view of him than you were used to. He spent so much time in a fluorescent lit lab where everything was tinged with a slight green-blue hue. It made him look perpetually haggard, which you supposed wasn't inaccurate, sleep deprived as he was. It was nice to see him out of that dreariness and instead with the sun warming his cheeks. It took everything in you not to jump onto his lap, knock his carefully collected flowers to the ground, and cover those cheeks in kisses. That kind of behavior would have to wait until you were in private, especially because it would lead to planting kisses elsewhere on him and you didn't want to share that sight with any random person who might walk by.
He stared at you, expression the same as it always was, and you stared back, hardly capable of biting back your self satisfied smile. “Did you make it for me?” He finally asked.
“Mhm,” you admit. “And I did a pretty good job, I think.”
He stared at you a second longer before looking at his basket and pulling out a specific flower. He turned to face you, his knees bumping yours, and you tilted your head in question. He reached towards you and delicately placed the flower behind your ear. His other hand held your cheek while he situated it and you felt a distinct comfort from his touch. Cheesy as it was, it warmed your heart.
“What is it?” You asked, now unable to see it clearly no matter how much you tried to activate your peripheral vision.
“A lily,” he kept gazing at you.
“What's it good for?” You asked, expecting some detailed but simplified explanation about how it prevented plague or something.
“Nothing significant. It's mostly just pretty.”
Your cheeks flushed; You didn't miss the implication.
“Hm, it's also poisonous to cats,” he added, as casual as ever.
This made you laugh, the kind that caught you off guard and kept going when you looked at how expressionless he managed to stay while you erupted into giggles. It wasn't even particularly funny, it was just Jiro. “Thanks for the cat poison,” you managed to get out.
He put a hand under your chin, his thumb on your cheek, “You’re welcome.” He leaned forward and kissed you.
Eyes closed, the sun on your face, Jiro's lips against yours, you might have confused the botanical gardens of Darkwick for heaven. You kissed him back and kept your eyes shut a second more when he pulled away, just letting yourself exist in that peace for as long as possible.
When you opened them, he looked away and down at his basket. The flower crown on his head was crooked. “I need to get these back to the lab,”
You nodded.
“You'll come with me?” He asked, standing up and offering you his hand.
You took it and got up to your feet, “I’d follow you pretty much anywhere,” you promised and readjusted your flower carefully. Didn't want that falling on the way.
He didn't let go of your hand as you both started making your way back to Mortkranken, “Good,” he squeezed your hand lightly, “I'll take you pretty much anywhere,” he repeated.

tokyo debunker : hotarubi boys with deaf mc
refer to my masterlist for the other house versions! enjoy 💕
warning: abit of ooc (?)
subaru :
he was informed beforehand that you were deaf from haku and you were pretty surprised that he could sign to you
that was because he was in the entertainment industry, so he picked up some ASL along the way
poor baby is already soft spoken, so he will gently tap your shoulder whenever he sees you around campus to greet you
helps you order your lunch when you guys are meeting up
protective of you when you go on missions with the hotarubi ghouls! even if he feels that he is not strong enough to protect you, he will still look out for you constantly
will assist you with your classes too if you come to him for help because he knows some professors can't really do their job in explaining well 💀
haku :
it took him awhile to realise that you were deaf actually. when you guys first met, he was pretty confused on why you weren't answering his questions but you were asking him questions instead
when he realised you signing to him as you speak, he pulled out his phone to communicate with you
would ask you to teach him on how to sign basic conversations so that he can communicate with you better
very protective of you whenever you go on missions with him! he would constantly be at your side and always keeping an arm around you (this flirt)
i feel he will take advantage of your deafness to tease and scare you. the amount of times he surprised you out of nowhere (but sometimes, its really unintentional 😭)
did he stop? no he didn't. he still will tease you and scare you from time to time
zenji :
he didn't realise that you were deaf due to him being a ghost and no one could hear him aside from haku 💀
when he did find out however, took the initiative to learn sign language for you so that when you do see him, he could communicate with you
abit upset that you can't hear his biwa, but would explain to you about each melody he plays so that you can feel included 🥹
he will protect you in his own ways, even using the doll artifact to secretly follow you during missions with the other houses (so if you see the doll randomly during a mission, just know that zenji is watching out for you)
another one who randomly gives you heart attacks whenever you walk around the campus or hotarubi.. he will just randomly pop in your vision upside down and smiling gleefully with the doll in his hands
he apologises afterwards and offered to walk with you as he rambles about jiro and the other hotarubi ghouls
refer to my masterlink pinned on my blog for the other houses ! 💘

One thing I found really interesting about this episode is how they mentioned they're preparing for Samhain, and how it is a festival that's going to have an interhouse competition
It caught my attention because I always thought tkdb's storyline was too serious to include actual school festivals in its setting and that the most we would have would be the Gala
But you're telling me there will be a festival...... and obscuary is dressing as butlers..... just like a themed cafe in a school's cultural festival..... Very VERY interesting...
#i always wanted to write something abt mc having to do something on her own for a festival#since she isn't in any house#or some captains scrambling to get her to be under their house during the festival#or maybe her being assigned to a specific house that doesn't have many students to balance things out a bit more#(whispers jabberwock whisper whisper obscuary whisper whisper)#but I kinda felt like there wasn't a proper setting for that#the ghouls wouldn't care for it or it'd be too ooc#now I'm like (≖͈́ㅂ≖͈̀ ) oh so you're getting ready for a festival huh#this might be my moment to write the corniest fic abt mc being really good at something and everyone being awestruck#i love this type of cliche dumb silly plot 😭 pure self indulgence#ANYWAY........#tokyo debunker

This is out of nowhere but I feel like Kaneki would read a book from a “booktok” section of a bookstore, absolutely hate it, download tiktok just long enough to post a 38 part series of ten minute videos about why it sucked shit, start a million fights, then delete the app leaving a deranged mess of discourse in his wake. He just had to get that out of his system and he is not aware that people are still having deathmatches in his comments a year later
#tokyo ghoul#tokyo ghoul headcanon#Ken kaneki#I made the mistake of reading a ‘booktok’ book and that’s several hours of my life wasted#what’s the fucking POINT of writing a book supposedly about dragons if all the focus is on SOME GUY’S COCK#fuck fourth wing all my homies hate forth wing#so I must project this dishonor on my blorbo

Some appreciation for Ishida's character writing...
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I like that Rize never let go of her hatred. She began her journey wanting to bite the hands of those that tried to hold her down.
And despite knowing that her actions led her towards greater suffering, she continues to resent Kaneki, who, in turn, decides to accept his failures and moves forward in hopes of becoming a better person.
She even goes as far as to try to 'drown' him herself when he fails to drown the first time.
It is an attitude that can be seen with multiple characters as they face their respective downfalls; Urie with his need for strength, Shiro with her vengeance, Mutsuki with his obsessive jealousy, and particularly Furuta, who cannot accept and move on from his disillusioned dream for a domestic life. What connects all these characters, including Rize, is their inability to move on, fixating on the wrongs they've experienced to justify their destructive behaviour. Kaneki also fell into this downward spiral in the first series, hence why it is a tragedy that ends with this 'death'.
But he learns, painfully, the fault in this way of thinking, and though others are forced to do the same during a pivotal moment in their development, (which can even include their deaths), Rize holds onto her hatred until the very end. Does she die resentful? Angry? Disappointed? Either way, it's a great moment of character writing, paralleling Kaneki's growth with Rize's refusal to change, working cyclically with the series -- just as her actions led to her demise in the first chapter, she dies bitterly a second time, at the hands of the man she deemed responsible for her suffering. It's cruelly ironic.
It's not perfect, but it does bring Touka some solace, being able to move on instead of fixating on a destructive sentimentality, like revenge. She can heal, she can grow, and she does, epitomised with her relationship with Kaneki and the conception of their child.
And what helps Kaneki move on in this way? Well, in contrast to Rize's refusal to develop, Touka stands as the antithesis of her characterisation. Touka is initially driven by the same violent rage that drives many others in the series, as touched on before. She kills the investigators hunting Hinami, as well as investigator Mado, but it doesn't bring her peace, especially when considering how she witnessed her father going down the same path, and then Ayato. And then Kaneki. After seeing the fruitlessness of exerting this rage, she refuses to be the same, instead focusing on the pacifism that Yoshimura tried to teach her.
The same pacifism Kaneki tries to reject before killing Yamori, notably following his acceptance of his ghoul side, as visualised with his figurative consumption of Rize.
And Kaneki, in turn, learns from her, abandoning his idealisation of Rize as a pinnacle of strength, and understanding, finally, that following her shadow will only ever result in his death. Instead, he'll follow the light that Touka brings into his life, her faith, her love, and her stability creating a home he can return to. And with a home, he can believe that this meandering journey has a destination he can strive towards. Of course, this home goes on to encapsulate all those he loves, but Touka remains the foundation within his mind.
There's beauty in acceptance, in seeing a purpose in one's bad experiences. It's something I can certainly relate to, refusing nihilism by accepting that, in the end, the world just is.
#tokyo ghoul#touka kirishima#kaneki ken#rize kamishiro#character analysis#want to write out these thoughts in a more organised way at some point#but I just wanted to quickly gush about the interconnecting themes between these characters

Here is my second request!!
Could I please get a kaneki ken with the action prompt 7? Fluff please!
STITCHES AND KISSES
Reblogs and Comments are greatly appreciated!!
__________________________________________________________________________
Fandom(s): Tokyo Ghoul
Pairing(s): Kaneki Ken x Gender Neutral!Human!Investigator!Reader
Prompt: Bandaging/washing their lover’s wounds after a fight (Action Prompt #7)
Notes: This is like… post-Jason Kaneki
This is for my 1K followers event! It’s going on between June 8th and June 22nd!
__________________________________________________________________________
By definition, your relationship with Kaneki Ken was forbidden.
The infamous half-ghoul and the prodigy of Arima Kishou? That was almost as good as being a Montague and a Capulet.
You got lost in thought as your lover hunted through your apartment for your first aid kit.
Would the CCG be the Capulets if this were indeed a Romeo and Juliet story? They were the ones who had more power, after all. They were able to walk around freely during the day, freely hunting down their prey while ghouls hid in fear for their lives.
A gentle caress on the back of your head made you jump and look up from your spot on the side of the bathtub.
Kaneki Ken stands illuminated by the bathroom light, but you swear you’ve never seen anything more handsome. The harsh luminescence makes his white hair almost transparent, and his dark gray eyes are overshadowed as he bends his head and sits beside you.
“You found it?” You ask, and he nods, keeping quiet, and you don’t miss how he doesn’t say a word.
He’s angry. That much is obvious.
You don’t want to argue, don’t want to fight. So you wordlessly unbutton your white work shirt that’s coated in your own blood and shed it, tossing it in the bathroom sink. Then, you turn around so he can see how bad the damage is. While he doesn’t say a word, you hear the almost inaudible gasp that escapes him.
And you know how bad it is.
The kagune of the Aogiri Tree ghoul had cut deeply into your shoulder blades and spine. It wasn’t lethal. You could still walk and everything. It had been a tough fight, with you getting the injuries protecting a small child that had almost been a midnight snack for the ghoul. He—or she, you couldn’t tell with the mask—had been an Ukaku type, with wings of reds and purples that you, frankly, found beautiful.
It almost hurt you to kill them.
But you had to remind yourself that all ghouls weren’t like Kaneki. They weren’t all like Anteiku. Some of them are simply man-eating monsters, people or not; that wasn’t something you could forgive that easily.
The sting of antiseptic has you jolting from your memories, and you hiss in pain against your attempts to keep quiet. Ken murmurs a soft “sorry” but doesn’t stop cleaning the gunk and grime out of the gash.
“You’ll need stitches.” He says in that quiet voice of his. You hum,
“I trust you.” You whisper, and he doesn’t respond.
He’s been so silent after everything with Jason. But you still hear soft cries when he thinks you’re asleep. You still see the almost invisible shaking of his hands when there’s a loud, unexpected noise.
You still see how broken he is because of it.
But you also see how strong it made him. He loves fiercer, holds you just a few seconds longer every time he hugs you, every time he kisses you.
The pain of the needle dipping in and out of your skin and muscles has you biting your knuckle to keep quiet. While your neighbors knew what you did for a living, that didn’t mean they had to know you were in agony.
Ken, luckily, makes it quick. He ties off the thread and cuts it before leaning in to press a gentle kiss to the wound. His lips are soft, and when he leans his forehead between your shoulder blades, you can feel how worried he is.
Because he almost lost you tonight.
If your partner had been a few seconds slower or hadn’t gotten you away from the ghoul in time, you would have died. Would have left him alone.
“You don’t have to be so gentle.” You say and feel him shift, wrapping a strong arm around your waist and pulling you tenderly into his chest.
“Yes, I do.” He says, and you hear his voice crack, “Someone has to be.”
And that breaks your heart.
Because you know it’s true.
Your hands are perpetually coated in red and covered in harsh calluses and blisters from handling your quinque. Your body is hard with muscle from endless fights.
You aren’t gentle with yourself. You know it. Ken knows it.
Abruptly, you realize he’s talking.
“My bounty is as boundless as the sea, my love as deep; the more I give to thee, the more I have, for both are infinite.” He whispers, and you smile. Weren’t you just thinking about Romeo and Juliet? You lean your head back and turn it so you can kiss his hair.
“Is that a roundabout way of saying you love me?” You ask and feel him chuckle, feel the vibrations against your back.
“I suppose so.” Is all he says. But he doesn’t need to say more.
Because you can tell he loves you.

I'M IN LOVE WITH A KILLER.
— pairing ; kaneki ken x human!gn!reader
— summary ; you knew he had to kill and eat humans in order to survive, but seeing the actual traces of the act hits different.
— cw ; mentions of blood and human consumption, pinch of angst, fluff and some comfort if you squint, est. relationship
the dark stains on his white t-shirt provided you with enough information to figure out what kaneki had been up to before you found him in a dark alley. the knowledge was such a stark contrast with how he was currently looking up at you with innocent eyes, but you knew better; he just got back from a food hunt.
your stomach churned with nausea as you looked at the boy in front of you, and your thoughts were a battlefield currently. you knew he ate humans regularly, but this was the first time you actually saw traces from the act, making you realize how real it was. kaneki had just killed and eaten a human that was likely to be innocent, and the thought was absolutely sickening to you. someone's life just ended in one of the most horrid ways possible, and the cause of it was right in front of you. it made you want to run away and throw up.
but then there was your rational side, knowing that the boy had no other choice if he wanted to stay alive. you also knew like no other how much kaneki hated eating humans, and how much he despised himself for having to do it time after time again. you were there when he forced himself to eat human food over and over again, shoving it in until he passed out because his body got too weak. you were there when he almost literally starved himself because the guilt of eating humans became too much for him to live with. you were there every time kaneki broke down because he hated being a ghoul.
it was all so double, the mixed feelings that fought for dominance almost dizzying you. but there was one thing you knew for sure; you didn't want to lose kaneki, and in order to do so, you had to live with the fact that he ate humans.
kaneki's expression had grown anxious while the long silence dragged on, and you quickly set all your worries aside. you slowly sank to the ground and took a seat next to him, leaning against him more than you leaned against the wall.
"does the blood scare you?" the boy asked, his tone cautious and laced with the same fear that was present on his features.
you entertained the thought for a moment; did it scare you? quickly after, you resolutely shook your head. you weren't scared, it was better to be described as shocked. knowing and seeing were two different things, and while you were used to bearing knowledge of his diet, seeing him covered in blood made you awfully aware of his dinner.
"you seem disgusted," kaneki pointed out as you remained silent, to which you nodded.
"i am," you confessed. "i've always thought i was okay with it, but finding you like this is a hard pill to swallow. it goes against everything i'm supposed to stand for."
"i'm so–" the ghoul began, but you cut him off.
"don't apologize," you hushed. "you just want to live, like everyone else on this planet. you're only doing what you have to do in order to survive. you would die if you didn't hunt, and i don't want to lose you."
you snuggled a little closer to him, getting as comfortable as possible on the pavement in the forsaken alley. in response, he wrapped an arm around you. you were torn between two sides, like you always were ever since you met kaneki.
you were raised to hate ghouls, just like every human being on this planet. kaneki was the enemy of mankind, you were supposed to despise him, report him to the CCG as soon as you got the chance. yet, here you were, allowing the line between hunter and prey to blur, getting close and falling in love with a killer.
finding your lover covered in blood left you in shock. your thoughts were a whirlwind and you were still trying not to throw up right there in that bystreet. but you promised him that you accepted him, completely abandoning your healthy human morals. you were a traitor, you realized once more.
"i love you," you muttered, closing your eyes and taking a deep breath to calm yourself. you buried your face in the crook of his neck, deftly ignoring the stains that were so painfully visible even in the dark.
it wasn't a lie, and you weren't trying to convince yourself. you really did love him, and you just wanted to let him know that finding him covered in blood didn't change anything.
"i love you, too," kaneki replied, relief dripping from his tone. he held you a little closer, as if he was afraid that you'd change your mind and run away from him.
mizutenshii — 3O.O9.2O23 — masterlist
frankly, maybe there was a part of you that wished to do so – the final strands of human sanity that lingered. but you didn't listen, abandoning your rationality and staying by his side.
