Attempted Abduction
Heyo Frontier-tag, did you miss me? >:D
------
Prompt: Knife to the throat
------
Tomoki’s scream cut through Kouji’s ears and he turned around. Reached for something to fight with, but there was nothing there. A man had grabbed Tomoki’s arm. Kouji didn’t recognize him, but Tokoki was trying to pull away and that was enough to tell Kouji it wasn’t good. He took two quick steps. The man hadn’t noticed him yet and Kouji put a hand on the man’s arm.
”I’d let him go if I was you”, he said.
He kept his voice stable and threatening, despite the racing of his heart. The man let go of Tomoki, twisted his arm and grabbed Kouji’s arm instead. Pulled Kouji closer. Something sharp pressed against Kouji’s throat and Kouji froze.
”Maybe I’ll take you instead”, the man said.
His voice was low, raspy. Kouji swallowed. Tomoki took a step closer and the knife pressed harder against Kouji. Blood ran down Kouji’s throat and stained the neck of his t-shirt. He tried to take a step back, but the man gripped the back of Kouji’s neck, took a step back and pulled Kouji along. Turned him around while stepping so Tomoki could see the blade threatening Kouji. Kouji tried to pull away, but the tip of the knife sank deeper into his flesh and he stopped moving. Tomoki did as well.
The man leaned closer to Kouji. His breath felt hot against Kouji’s ear and Kouji shuddered.
”You’re the one I wanted anyway.”
Tomoki took a step closer, Anger clouded his face. The knife pressed harder, deeper into Kouji and the man laughed,
”Tell the others”, he said. ”It won’t help him.”
Kouji’s fear twisted into anger at the man’s words. He finally realized what was going on. Yakuza.
”For fuck’s sake”, he muttered.
He lifted a foot and slammed it down on the man’s foot. The knife slid along Kouji’s throat, cut through his skin, but was no longer pressing against his carotid artery. Kouji turned around, brought his knee up and kicked the man in his nuts. The man lost his grip around Kouji’s neck and Kouji backed away.
”Tell Kiyota that if he really wants me he’d better send someone more prepared.”
The man hissed something. Kouji put a hand on Tomoki’s shoulder and pressed the other against the bleeding wound.
”Come on, let’s get out of here.”
They started walking. Kouji could feel Tomoki tremble under his hand.
”It’s not Kiyota-san”, the man said.
Kouji’s grip around Tomoki’s shoulder tightened. He didn’t turn around.
”I’ll warn the police”, he said. ”And you should warn Ogawa.”
He did not have time to get dragged into a Yakuza-dispute. He urged Tomoki to keep walking with a gentle push. The man let them leave, didn’t make a new attempt to grab them, and Kouji breathed a sigh of relief. He let go of Tomoki.
”Who was that?” Tomoki asked.
Kouji was starting to feel slightly light-headed. He wasn’t sure if it was blood loss or an adrenaline crash.
”Let’s… get to the bench”, he answered.
He fell more than sat down in it and Tomoki sat down beside him. Looked at him and tilted his head.
”I think you’re strangling the bloodflow to your brain”, he said.
”Probably”, Kouji agreed and leaned back. ”You call the others, tell them to meet at Takuya’s place or something instead.”
He pulled the hand away from his throat, felt the blood start flowing again and put the hand back.
”...just not outside. For today. I need to call dad.”
Being the oldest sure was a lot of responsibility. Kouji would have to let Kouichi know he appreciated him later. He pulled his phone out and called Kousei, heard Tomoki talk to Takuya. Kousei answered on the fifth signal and Kouji closed his eyes.
”Come pick me up?” he asked.
He sounded pathetic. Small and weak. He could hear Takuya protesting the change in plans. Kousei let out a deep sigh and Kouji hurried to explain himself.
”I need to go to the hospital and… something is up.”
Kousei dropped something. A crash echoed through the phone.
”Alright, I’m coming. I’ll be there in 20 minutes.”
”uh…” Kouji wasn’t sure he’d be conscious in 20 minutes. ”Maybe hurry a little?”
”I’ll try, but if you really can’t wait you should call an ambulance.”
”Hm, maybe”, Kouji answered.
He ended the call. Tomoki was still arguing with Takuya and Kouji listened to that.
”Because I almost got kidnapped”, Tomoki cried out when Takuya refused to give up.
There was silence. Tomoki sniffled and Kouji’s stomach hurt. He shouldn’t have befriended them, should have kept to himself. A little too late now. He just had to keep them all safe.
Blood was seeping though Kouji’s fingers and he was thirsty. Takuya seemed to finally agree and Tomoki ended the call. Kouji nudged him with his elbow.
”We’ll let you off on the way”, he promised.
And then he’d never talk with them again. For their own good. They really didn’t deserve to end up hostages. Tomoki sniffled and pulled a hand across his eyes.
”Who was that?” he asked again. ”Who are the people you talked about?”
”Yakuza-members”, Kouji answered.
He really didn’t feel like explaining the whole thing while he was actively bleeding to death. He hoped Tomoki would understand that without him mentioning it. Tomoki looked at him.
”...Can I do anything?” he asked.
Kouji’s stomach felt heavy. He was supposed to take care of Tomoki, not the other way around. He shook his head.
”Dad’s on his way. I’m fine.”
Tomoki kicked his legs, gripped the edge of the bench and looked at his knees instead. Kouji twisted his body so he was sat more towards Tomoki.
”Are you okay?” he asked.
Tomoki pressed his knees together, gripped the bench harder. His legs stopped moving.
”Why did they try to grab me? What did I do wrong?”
”It’s not you”, Kouji answered.
His head spun a little and he released some of the pressure against his throat. Blood pooled faster under his hand, but his head felt clearer. He wasn’t sure how to explain it without scarying Tomoki. How to downplay it so the others didn’t start being scared of going outside.
He let out a sigh. Maybe just telling the truth was the best way to go. He stood up and gestured for Tomoki to do the same. They started walking.
”...They want my dad”, Kouji said. ”Not sure what for this time, but…”
He stumbled. Tomoki walked a little closer and Kouji put a hand on Tomoki’s shoulder for support. He’d have to ask his teacher about how to defend himself against a knife to the throat later.
”He grabbed you because he knew that’d get me closer so he could grab me. I was an idiot and fell for it.”
Not that he could have just left Tomoki to fend for himself either. He sighed.
”You did nothing wrong, Tomoki. The fault is on them.”
And on him. He should have been more vigilant. He closed his eyes and took a shaky breath. He felt lightheaded despite the lack of pressure against his throat. He opened his eyes, noticed Kousei’s car come into the parking lot and waved. The car pulled to a stop next to them and Kousei got out to look Kouji over.
”...that’ll need stitches”, Kousei said.
Tomoki stepped closer. His hands were shaking. Kouji pressed a hand against the wound again and leaned against Kousei.
”How… how are you not freaking out more?” Tomoki asked.
Kouji was definitely not up for explaining that. Maybe he should, but how do you say ’it’s fine, they’ve kidnapped me since I was three’ without causing raised eyebrows and worry? He shrugged. Kousei put a hand against Kouji’s back and helped him into the passanger seat. Tomoki shifted his weight from one foot to the other.
”Come on”, Kouji said. His voice trembled slightly and he hated it. ”We’ll drop you off at Takuya’s.”
”We’re going to the hospital”, Kousei said.
”Mhm.”
Kouji closed his eyes. He was so tired. And thirsty. He’d drink a whole bottle of whatever health-drink Satomi gave him when they got home.
”After we’ve dropped Tomoki off. I’m not leaving my friend alone after he almost got kidnapped.”
There was silence for a few seconds, then the backdoor opened and Tomoki sat down behind Kouji. Kousei sat down in the driver’s seat and started the car. Kouji almost fell asleep to the engine’s humming and the gentle rocking of the car.
It stopped way too soon in Kouji’s opinion. The backdoor opened again.
”Uhm…” Tomoki mumbled. ”Are you… will you stop by when you’re done? Let us know you’re okay?”
”’m fine”, Kouji slurred and opened his eyes.
”Should have called an ambulance”, Kousei said before turning to Tomoki. ”We’ll see how long it takes and how Kouji’s feeling when it’s done.”
”Mf”, Kouji protested.
Kousei patted his leg. Kouji could feel his hand start slipping and forced himself to press harder. Kousei glanced at him before turning back to Tomoki.
”Don’t worry too much, Kouji’ll be fine.”
Kouji was too tired to protest or agree. He closed his eyes again. Tomoki unbuckled and got out of the car.
”Let us know”, he said again.
He closed the door. Kouji lifted his hand to wave and felt a fresh flood of blood run down his throat. His hand fell into his lap as the car wroomed and left towards the hospital.

Quotes from the Historical Choctaw Records
Anoti witniss achʋffa Stephen White ʋt Court a̱ya he nitak o̱ abeka cha eklo tokosh nowʋt kaniya toko̱ Judge ʋt ilʋp fehna itimanumpolit akostini chit intaiya ha cha i̱ kashofe tokoki.
“One witness, Stephen White, on the day he was to come to Court, was sick and did not come. The Judge went and after talking to him about it, excused him.”
-1871 Jack's Fork County Court Affairs, October §5.1
But Peter Hudson’s translation is pretty different: “As to Stephen White, who failed to appear before Court as a witness, and who claimed that he was sick at the time. It was reported to the Court that when deputy sheriff he was not at home. After Judge questioned Stephen White personally about the matter, he was satisfied and excused him.”
Like, is all that extra information just fluff that he came up with? We’ve speculated that Hudson may have known some of the folks in these records, so it’s also possible that he just knows more information that’s not in the original documents. We’ve also found times where he uses his English translation to hide things, which makes his stuff fascinating to work with.
Also, on the linguistics side of things, that word eklo tokosh “didn’t come” is a huge bubble-buster for me. Choctaw has two ways of making negative statements, 1) with the word kiyoh and 2) with the suffix -o. Linguists have been struggling to try and identify the difference between these two for decades, and one of my pet theories was that the circumfix form was a non-finite form, meaning that it doesn’t have past or present tense, it just is. But eklo tokosh has the -o and the past tense marker -tok, so it seems like that hypothesis may have been wrong...

Following Nights
Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock. The antique clock on the chimed softly as the minutes passed. Tokoki sat there in a cocoon, staring at her room's window. She's been here in her moirail's hive for nights now. Her arms bandaged to cover up all of the needle holes that have most likely healed by now, but that stupid nurse won't let her seem them. It irked Tokoki that she felt like she couldn't handle seeing them, that it would trigger some sort of traumatic shock in her. But it wouldn't, Tokoki's known the holes have been there ever since she had come out of whatever drugged up state she had been in. The needle holes had stopped bothering her, the constant medical having died down as she's gonna better. But one thing still itched in the back of her mind. One thing she couldn't answer, and worried she'd never GET an answer. Why? Just... Why? Why her? What did she do to deserve this fate? The fact she couldn't figure out a logical answer hurt her head, making her feel sick and uneasy. She hated this. She hated not knowing why this happened to her. Normally she'd be fine without knowing certain things, or understanding things that didn't apply to her for the most part. But right now? She wanted to know why. Just why! Someone give her a reason! She gripped the side of the cocoon, her eyes stringing a little with hot tears. She wanted to start crying, but a gentle hand gripped her shoulder, rubbing it slowly. She looked up and sniffled a little, seeing the familiar face of her moirail knelt beside her. The Oliveblood cupped her cheek, gently stroking it. This always calmed her down. Koreki knew her best... He always knew her best. She relaxed and closed her eyes, just letting herself relax. She didn't need to know the answers right now. Hell, maybe she'd never know the answers. But that doesn't matter right now.

This isn't how it was supposed to go
Despite knowing how long the trip would be, Tokoki decided to take the advice of her moirail and start making her way towards her matesprite's hive,. She didn't know where Koreki was or who he was talking to, but she just had to make herself believe that he was going to be alright. That he's smart enough not to throw himself into the throngs of danger. She knew he was doing this for her, she'd hate herself more if he got hurt because of her. Tokoki let out a breath as he walked, her footsteps barely audible as she made her way out of the small forest she lived in. Tokoki openly refused to live near other seadwellers, or the ocean for that matter of fact. She couldn't stand it, she couldn't stand them. She couldn't stand all of those negative, depressive old memories. She didn't want to be reminded that she was the bottom of the barrel when it came to Fuchshiabloods. She just needed to get out of the forest. She just needed to get to her matesprite's hive. She just- Crack. The sound of a stick breaking from somewhere behind her made her blood run colder than it already was. The air got stuck in her throat as she tensed up, her fins fanning out as wide as they could. But she needed to push forward, she needed to keep walking. So that's exactly what she did. Cracks and creeks came from all around her, pushing her closer and closer to a panic attack. She was almost there. She was so close to getting out of the forest. All she needed to do was- A sharp pain coursed through Tokoki's leg as something gripped onto it tightly, yanking her down to the ground with one strong tug. She could feel the blood running down her leg and soaking her left sock. She didn't get any time to react as a sweet, floral scent suddenly filled her nostrils. Her body started to feel weak, the world around her began to spin. The scent was too strong. Her eyes began to close until darkness consumed her. [Tokoki Fukaii is now OFFLINE]
