tw cancer, tw death, tw grief / life update
I was having a nice day on Saturday. I woke up, made a tea latte, did some yoga, went for a run, went to get groceries.
Around 3 PM I got a call from my mom and aunt, letting me know that the hospice nurse said that they expected my dad to have 24 hours or less to live. This was a huge change from previous estimates of a week-two weeks. Derek and I booked airline tickets same-day from Minneapolis to CA. Our flight wasn't until 9:30 PM.
We were at the airport, past security, waiting for our flight to board, when I got the call from my mom saying that my dad had passed.
I had prepared for this since he was diagnosed 10 months ago - I had prepared for this since he started hospice - I had prepared for this since the last time I saw him in April - but I still wasn't ready. I thought I was ready, I thought I would be ready, but I wasn't.
Derek held me when I broke down weeping in the middle of the airport. We flew 3.5 hours to CA, were on the road for another 1 hour, and got to my parents' house at past 1 AM. It was hell. It was a hell day.
The hell got worse the next day when we saw his body at the funeral home. I walked to him and automatically said "Daddy? Daddy?" like I always used to, and he didn't respond. He didn't say anything. It was hell. The worst thing I've ever been through.
My aunt and Derek had to go back to home (Pennsylvania and Minneapolis respectively) yesterday. My mom and I attended my dad's funeral today. Seeing the hearse, driving behind the hearse, was really hard. My dad taught me how to drive, and I used to sit in the backseat when he and my mom drove me around when I was a kid, and now I was driving behind the funeral hearse.
My mom and I were so nervous about the funeral, but it was beautiful. It was at a veterans cemetery, peaceful and quiet and beautifully maintained. The ceremony was beautiful. It gave us peace and closure.
My dad was 70 years old. He grew up in Chennai, India, in abject poverty, the youngest of seven kids, raised by a single mom. He grew up to become a pharmacist, and moved from a couple of decades of retail pharmacy work in India and Dubai and the United States, to moving to outpatient and inpatient clinic pharmacy management after he enlisted in the Air Force. He loved pharmacy so, so much. He was so passionate about it. His last job before he retired was an oncology pharmacist, at the same chemotherapy infusion clinic where he ended up receiving his chemotherapy after a diagnosis of small cell lung cancer.
My dad grew up in poverty, and his own dad was never around. He worked hard and provided for my mom and I.
I have had a lot of pain and grief ever since my dad was diagnosed with cancer. I could write for pages about it. All I can say is that I hope nobody has to see a loved one suffer and lose their life due to cancer, because it's hell to witness. I have the greatest empathy and love for others who have witnessed this painful process in their family.
All I can say is my only consolation is that my dad lived a long life. I know there are so many people who tragically die younger. My only other consolation is knowing that we are all united in grief, because this pain of losing a loved one comes to all of us someday.
This past few days, this past month, this past 10 months, has changed me irrevocably. I have new fears, new anxieties, new understanding (and fear) of death and mortality.
I also have more understanding and appreciation of life, how temporary it is, how important it is to live life to the fullest while we can, and how important it is to appreciate the people we love. My husband, my friends, and my aunt and cousins have been so supportive, carrying me through something so devastating. Even work, even my boss, who has been so understanding.
And to everyone on tumblr who has been so supportive during this journey. People who read my posts, who liked them to show solidarity with my feelings, who commented, who sent me messages of support and kindness. Thank you.

Day 1
A Psychologist par excellence, Maharishi Patanjali was a seer who lived sometime around the 2nd century BCE. He knew the twists and turns, the pitfalls and the intricacies of the labvrinthian miracle called the mind.
Maharishi Patanjali was not only well versed with the craftiness of this mind but also knew a way to master the mind. The definitive authority on the body, mind and soul, his Yoga Sutras are an eye opening account, and perhaps the most advanced textbook of psychology.
2200 years later, this text is still the authority on the biggest global trend, that is Yoga. 2200 years later, his text finds relevance in our lives cutting across languages, cultures, borders, time. Yoga is helping people across the world deal with life and living, even today. But what is one supposed to make of the sutras written almost like a computer code?
According to Patanjali, 'Santosha' or contentment is the basic requirement for growth. But how do we get there in this day and age of anxiety and depression?
Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar Ji decodes the Sutras with his customary wit and elan, making it an essential addition to everyone's reading list. For anyone trying to navigate the murky waters of life, this knowledge is sure to steer you to a safe shore.
Chapter 1 - Discipline Of Yoga
Day 1
Shaasana are the rules that society or somebody else imposes on you. Anushasan are the rules that you impose on yourself. Now, why is Yoga called a discipline? Where is the need for a discipline? When does the need for discipline arise? When you are thirsty, you want to drink water.

You don't feel that it is a rule to drink water when you are thirsty. And when you are hungry, you eat. You do feel that you have the discipline of eating when you are hungry, that you have a discipline of enjoying the nature. No discipline is necessary for enjoyment. When is discipline relevant?
Not when something is enjoyable at the very first step. A child never says that it has the discipline of running to his mother when he sees her. Discipline arises where something is not very charming to begin with, when you know that it would be ultimately give a fruit that is very good and enjoyable but that, in the beginning, it is not enjoyable.
When you are abiding in yourself, when you are in joy, and when you are in peace or in happiness, true happiness, then you are already in your self. There is no discipline there. But when that is not so, the mind will wag its tail all the time. Then, discipline is essential to calm it down so that it can come back to it Self. The fruit of this is eventually very blissful and joyful.
A diabetic patient has a discipline not to eat sugar. Someone with cholesterol has to be disciplined and not to take too much fat. This is because, though fats are tasty, they will raise unpleasant complications later. There are three types of happiness - sattvic, tamasic and rajasic.
Sattvic, to begin with is not so enjoyable but it always leads to joy. The happiness which is felt after a certain discipline is really Sattvic happiness - a long lasting happiness. A happiness which is enjoyable to begin with and ends in misery is no happiness at all, so a discipline is necessary to have this authentic sattvic happiness.
Discipline is not torturing oneself unnecessarily. The purpose of discipline is to attain joy. Sometimes people impose disciplines on themselves which doesn't give any joy to them or anybody else at any time. This is Tamasic happiness. Tamasic happiness just appears to be but it is misery from the beginning to the end.
No discipline is necessary for tamasic happiness. Lack of discipline is tamasic happiness. Rajasic happiness appears very enjoyable in the beginning but ends up in misery and suffering. It's caused by following the wrong discipline. It may also arise from a lack of discipline. Discipline is essential for sattvic happiness.
To bear what is uncomfortable is discipline. It need not to be uncomfortable all the time. But if it's uncomfortable, you need discipline to be able to bear it and move through it. That's why Patanjali began with “now” - when things are not clear and when your heart is not in the right place.
Nobody has imposed the discipline of Yoga on you. They are self-imposed. What are the rules that you have imposed on yourself? When you wake up in the morning, you brush your teeth. You do it before going to bed, too. This is your discipline. But this has been imposed on you from childhood.
When you were a kid, your mother had imposed it on you. Once it became a habit and when you understood that it was good for you, it was no more your mother's rule. It became your rule. Keeping yourself clean and observing hygiene, exercising, meditating, being kind, considerate and not being rude.
You have imposed these rules on yourself to help maintain discipline. Now, what does that discipline do? Discipline unites your Self and unites all the loose ends of your existence.
Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankarji

I made some disheveled looking akki roti for dinner today, with some prawn fried in coconut oil. This month, I decided to eat home cooked meals entirely after being completely broke and out of money last month. It seemed like a challenging task in the start, but turns out I'm having fun and it's much easier because I don't have to spend time deciding on what to order. Now I'm prepared with ingridients and recepies, and somehow I'm being able to make it work. I had to break the rules a couple of times, I was tempted by shawarma last Saturday during work. And last Tuesday I was in Chennai, I didn't get to eat anything local because I was in an outskirts region, I ended up eating beef tacos for breakfast in Chennai(?). On the other hand, the food I've been making are all quite fun, I made Tuna Kimbap the other day, also made the Thai rice and mango dessert. My breakfast toasts have been elaborate toasts, lots of chitranna, puliogare with extra attention. I should make neer dose soon.
Along with making food, I have to make sure I am meeting the protein requirement because I've been lifting regularly, today I did my heaviest deadlift of 52.5 kgs, that's 6.5 kgs more than my weight. It's quite surreal to be strong enough to lift something more than your weight. I now have to add extra peanuts to my chitranna just to be able to support my body. It's hard to eat protein, I don't like meat. I only like fish and prawn and I don't think I'll be able to afford to get vegan protein in the quantities that works for the body.
Cooking at home is expensive, especially making nice things all the time. I run out of money almost all the month due to food. I can't eat easily so I have to make sure the food is tasty. It makes me sad how no matter how much work I do, in the end of the month it's a struggle. It makes me question my life and if I'm good enough. I start questioning if I'll ever make money and I feel like a broke artist with no real career.

Small Story 80. Relationship Won't Die Madhav Rao was shocked to receive a reply to his invitation from his sister, Rama. In her letter, she mentioned that she wouldn't be attending his 80th birthday celebration, which was scheduled for one week from now in Madurai. Shyamala, Madhav's wife, was also surprised to see her sister-in-law's response. The reason behind Rama’s decision was something Shyamala hadn't expected: her son , Dr. Sudharsan, a leading surgeon at the Government Erskin Hospital, had refused to give his daughter Vasanthi in marriage to Rama's son, who had been working in Canada for several years. Sudharsan had cited the simple reason that relationships between cousins often don’t work out, especially in marriages, which made Rama very upset. She had been unable to convince him, and after that, she stopped visiting Madhav Rao’s place. More than one and a half decades had passed since her last visit. Eventually, she had migrated to Canada. Madhav Rao had always been very attached to his sister, her husband Raghavendra, and his nephew Dhananjay. But despite the tension between the families, Madhav was still hopeful that she would come to his 80th birthday celebration. On the day of the function, held in the famous Lakshmi Sundaram Hall, many dignitaries, VIPs, and doctors had attended. Madhav Rao, who had retired two decades ago from his position as Director of RAW, was highly respected by his colleagues and friends. The celebrations were grand, and people came to Madhav Rao and Shyamala to seek their blessings on this special occasion. Suddenly, Madhav Rao's old friend Keshav arrived with a young boy. “Madhav, I remember the old days we spent together in Chennai. I can't forget them,” Keshav said with a smile. Madhav nodded warmly. “Who is this boy?” Keshav replied, “He’s my friend's grandson. He's here on holiday from some country, I can't quite remember. He wanted to witness this function, so I brought him along. My friend is my neighbor in Adyar.” The cute boy, about 14 years old, prostrated before Madhav Rao and Shyamala in a traditional gesture of respect. Later, Keshav took the stage and introduced the boy to the guests. “Ladies and gentlemen, we are gathered here to celebrate the 80th Sadhabishekam of Madhav Rao, a very important occasion in Indian tradition. This young boy, Ram, has come here to witness this function. He is an admirer of Madhav Rao and his family. His grandparents were supposed to be here today, but due to personal reasons, they couldn’t attend.” The guests looked at the boy with curiosity as he stood up to speak. “Hello, everyone,” Ram said confidently, addressing the room. “I am very proud to say that I belong to this prestigious family. Madhav Rao is my grandmother's brother, and he is like a grandfather to me. My grandmother had her reasons for not coming here, but I convinced her, and she allowed me to attend in her place. Despite the letter she wrote to her brother, deep down, she wanted to be here. Unfortunately, she suffered a severe cardiac arrest recently and is now resting. She asked me to convey one message to all of you: relationships never die." Ram’s words were powerful, and Madhav Rao felt a lump form in his throat. Tears welled up in his eyes. Shyamala, too, could not hold back her emotions as they listened to the boy’s heartfelt message. K.Ragavan 17-11-24

Flower delivery in Chennai is a beautiful way to bring a smile to someone’s face, convey love, express gratitude, or celebrate a special occasion. With Chennai’s rich culture and appreciation for flowers, a bouquet can truly brighten any day, making flower delivery in this city a popular choice for many. Here, we will explore why flower delivery in Chennai is an excellent choice, the benefits of choosing the right service, and how to select the best flowers for different occasions.
The Significance of Flower Delivery in Chennai
Chennai is a city that cherishes traditions, and flowers have long been a part of its cultural fabric. Whether adorning temple entrances, used in weddings, or given as gifts, flowers are cherished for their aesthetic beauty and the sentiments they represent. With the rise of flower delivery services, gifting flowers in Chennai has become easier and more convenient than ever. Now, a quick flower delivery in Chennai can turn an ordinary day into a memorable occasion.
In today’s fast-paced world, people often look for quick and reliable ways to express their emotions, and flower delivery services help them achieve that. Whether you need a bouquet for a friend’s birthday, a special arrangement for an anniversary, or a vibrant setup for a corporate event, flower delivery in Chennai ensures your floral gift arrives fresh and on time.
Advantages of Choosing Flower Delivery in Chennai
Using a flower delivery service in Chennai offers several benefits:
Wide Variety of Choices: Local stores may have limited flowers, but online flower delivery services in Chennai provide a wide selection, from roses and lilies to exotic flowers like orchids and tulips. This variety allows customers to choose arrangements suited to their unique tastes and occasions.
Convenience and Ease: Flower delivery in Chennai allows you to send flowers without stepping out of your home. Just a few clicks, and you can have fresh flowers delivered directly to your recipient’s doorstep. This convenience is especially helpful for those with busy schedules or those living outside Chennai but wishing to send flowers to loved ones in the city.
Customization Options: Many flower delivery services in Chennai offer customization. You can personalize your bouquet with specific flowers, colors, and arrangement styles, and even include extras like chocolates or small gifts to make the gesture extra special.
Same-Day Delivery: One of the key benefits of flower delivery in Chennai is the availability of same-day delivery options. If you realize at the last minute that you forgot an important occasion, same-day delivery ensures that your flowers reach your loved ones on time.
Choosing the Right Flowers for Different Occasions
When opting for flower delivery in Chennai, it's essential to choose the right flowers to match the occasion and convey the intended sentiment. Here are some popular choices:
Roses for Romance: Roses are universally loved and symbolize love and passion, making them perfect for romantic occasions. Red roses are ideal for anniversaries or Valentine’s Day, while pink or yellow roses convey friendship and joy.
Lilies for Sympathy: If you’re using flower delivery in Chennai to express condolences, lilies are a thoughtful choice as they symbolize peace and purity, providing comfort in difficult times.
Orchids for Elegance: For formal events or professional settings, orchids bring a touch of sophistication. They are also perfect for birthdays or congratulatory occasions, adding a unique charm to the celebration.
Carnations for Mother’s Day: Carnations are widely used for expressing love and gratitude, especially toward mothers. They last longer than many other flowers, symbolizing enduring love and care.
Gerberas for Cheerfulness: Gerbera daisies, with their bright colors, are perfect for birthdays, housewarmings, or any occasion where you want to bring a smile to someone’s face.
Tips for Finding the Best Flower Delivery in Chennai
When selecting a flower delivery service in Chennai, consider these tips:
Read Reviews: Check customer reviews and ratings online to see if the service delivers fresh, quality flowers consistently. Reviews can give insights into reliability, quality, and punctuality.
Look for Variety and Customization Options: A good flower delivery service in Chennai should offer various flowers and arrangements. Look for services that allow customizations, so you can tailor your bouquet to suit the occasion.
Check Delivery Options: Opt for services that provide timely delivery options, especially same-day or midnight delivery, if needed. This flexibility can be crucial for last-minute arrangements.
Verify Customer Service: Great customer service can make a huge difference. Look for services with good support teams who can address any issues or special requests promptly.
Flower delivery in Chennai is not just a convenient service; it's a way to make lasting memories, express emotions, and connect with others in a meaningful way. Whether it’s a small gesture of friendship or a grand romantic display, flowers have the power to convey feelings that words sometimes cannot. With the right choice, flower delivery in Chennai can transform an ordinary day into an extraordinary one, making life’s moments even more beautiful.

[ad_1] Courtesy: Hockey India Hockey India fetes the legend with Rs 10 lakh cash award; announces retiring Rani’s famed Jersey No.28 ~ New Delhi, 24th October 2024: In a poignant moment at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium today, former Indian Women’s Hockey Team Captain, Rani, announced her retirement from international hockey after the conclusion of the PFC India vs Germany Bilateral Hockey Series 2024. Known far and wide as the Queen of Indian Hockey, Rani now shifts her focus to coaching and nurturing the future stars of the sport. Rani’s journey began at just 14 years old, making her the youngest player for the Indian Women’s Hockey Team when she took to the field at the Olympic Qualifier in Kazan, Russia, in April 2008. Over the course of a remarkable 14-year career, she led the Indian team to numerous triumphs, including the historic fourth-place finish at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. Hailing from humble beginnings in Shahbaad Markanda, Haryana, Rani’s rise to stardom was paved with challenges. Despite the odds, she emerged as a beacon of hope, drawing inspiration from the academy run by legendary coach Baldev Singh. “After almost 15 years of wearing the Indian jersey with pride, it’s time for me to step off the field as a player and begin a new chapter. Hockey has been my passion, my life, and the greatest honor I could ever have asked for. From small beginnings to representing India on the biggest stages, this journey has been nothing short of incredible,” Rani recalled fondly. Under her captaincy, India broke a 13-year drought to clinch the Women’s Asia Cup in 2017. She also became the first Indian Women’s Hockey player to be nominated for the FIH Women’s Young Player of the Year Award. Throughout her career, Rani has been honored with numerous accolades, including the Arjuna Award in 2016, World Games Athlete of the Year in 2019, Best Women Player of the Year in 2019 by Hockey India, the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna in 2020, and the Padma Shri Award in 2020. “Playing for India came with a lot of recognition but the moments that I will cherish the most are the ones I spent training with the team and facing tough teams together. One such moment was at the Tokyo Olympics where the team ran ragged for each other, this unity led us to victory over some tough teams. As I call it a day on my career, I am filled with pride and belief that the Indian Women’s Hockey Team will go on to great things in the future,” she added. Courtesy: Hockey India Rani is set to take charge as the Women’s Mentor and Indian Coach of Soorma Hockey Club in the revamped Hockey India League this December. She has already dabbled in a similar role when she became the chief coach of the Indian sub-junior girls’ team during Hockey India’s 100th Executive Board Meeting in Chennai last year. Rani even undertook the FIH Educators Course in July to upskill herself for this new chapter. “I’m forever grateful to my teammates, coaches, and every single fan who supported me along the way. I am grateful to Hockey India, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, SAI, Haryana Government and Odisha Government for their support. Though I won’t be playing anymore, my love for the game continues. I look forward to new roles and give back to the sport that has given me so much,” she commented on her future plans. Rani’s indomitable spirit and determination to overcome societal pressures have left an indelible mark. She continues to inspire young hockey players, standing tall as a symbol of breaking barriers and chasing dreams. Rani truly remains the Queen of Indian Hockey, a legacy that will live on.
