Superweapon Surprise
Gemilin bounds into the cafe, practically skipping. Their tail swishes and their ears and eyes are roving the crowd, looking for someone. Finally, the K’laxi sees who they’re looking for.
“Lina! Lina! I need your help!” Without waiting to be invited to sit, she joins Lina at her table.
“What is it you need, Gem?” Lina is pretty sure that she’s Gem’s only human friend, so she tends to find her when she has a question about humanity. She’s also pretty sure Gem has a crush on her, but she tactfully doesn’t mention that part.
“Can you design a weapon for me please?”
Lina almost chokes on her coffee. The cafe is one of the few places the popular stimulant is allowed, and all other sapient species have to sign a waver to enter. Lina is one of the humans who visits every day for coffee. “Gem, I work on thrusters all day long. I don’t design weapons!”
Gemilin nods excitedly, her ears flicking. “Yes, yes, I know, but you’re also a human. You are practically predisposed to designing weapons that would make the rest of the Galaxy splorch their vivnax!”
Lina turns her head to the side. “What was that Gem, I don’t recognize those words?”
“I know! Isn’t it neat! Hari over in Environmental Processing said it would sound ‘cute’ if I colored my speaking with words from my birth language. Is it cute?” Gem’s fur ripples a blush and she is practically vibrating with excitement.
“Gem… did you drink any coffee? You are sure… animated today.”
“No, silly! That level of stim would kill me. So, a weapon?”
Lina puts down her coffee cup and busies herself putting her silverware and napkin on her now empty tray. “Why though? Why me? Why a weapon?”
“I already said! Humans are great at weapons. As for you, well-“ Just for a little bit, Gemilin looks down at the floor. “-You’re the only human I know that would actually try and come up with an answer instead of just brushing me off.”
“Hmm. Okay then. Walk with me.” Lina stands up and makes her way to the bussing table. She drops off her tray and coffee cup and starts down the hall. Gem follows, trotting just a bit to keep up with Lina’s long strides.
“Okay, so the thing that I’ve been thinking about is the fact that we’ve had the wormhole generators for hundreds of years, and haven’t really tried to weaponize them yet, right?”
Gem stops, but Lina doesn’t notice. She bounds to catch back up. “The… wormhole generators? How would you weaponize them.”
“Well, they take the ship and open a wormhole and the ship moves through the wormhole to any other part of the galaxy pick right? So long as we have the energy and the navigation solution, it works. What if we didn’t use a ship.”
“What would you use instead Lina?”
“Well, like a bomb for example. Or!” Lina is becoming more animated. She’s looking up as she thinks and walks. “Okay, try this. We take a stardrive from an old Starjumper, stick it on a few thousand tonnes of tungsten, then accelerate it up to around 80% C.”
“Yes, a relativistic impactor. You used them against New Wellington.”
Lina’s head snaps down to Gem. “That was Parvati, not me, I’m from High Mars Lilac. Anyway, how did you know about that?”
Lina’s reaction causes Gem to flinch. “Sorry! I forgot that it was Parvati. I learned it when I was looking up human weapons.”
“Anyway. Yes, like a relativistic impactor, except this one also has a wormhole generator. Now, once it’s up to speed you link a few thousand feet over the surface of a planet.”
“Not to strike the planet?” Gem’s bouncy nature is gone, and she is giving Lina her full attention.
“No, that’s too wasteful. Send it over the city you want to destroy. The wormhole link will open, and the impactor will scream into the atmosphere. At 80% C it would generate all kinds of wild particles and interactions with the atmosphere. With those speeds any atmosphere would be like hitting a wall. The impactor would still be destroyed of course, but the devastation would be so much greater! With good enough maps, you could set it to strike multiple cities just by virtue of the size of the explosion. It would be like a lance of gamma radiation and exotic particles stabbing multiple cities instantly.”
Gem stops walking. Lina notices this time and stops along side her. They’re both at one of the large windows that are along the promenade. Gem’s ears are flat against her head and her tail is limp. “You… you did it. Lina, that weapon would kill millions.”
Lina nods. “Hundreds of millions depending on where and when you struck. And, I haven’t heard of it being done before. So there, I made you a weapon.”
The small K’laxi looks around for a bench and flops into it. Lina sits down next to her and looks down at her friend. “What’s the matter? You asked for a weapon.”
Gem looks up at Lina’s kind face. “I didn’t think you could do it though. And so easily… and with such destruction. If someone asked me to come up with a weapon I’d probably say something like ‘a human slug thrower but bigger.’ You thought of a way to destroy civilizations… off the cuff. Do all humans think like you?”
Lina looked out the window. Space was large enough that one really could not see the traffic around the station, but she knew it was there, circling like shoals of fish. “I don’t know, Gemilin. I haven’t met every human. Lots do though. We’re pretty good at thinking of unusual ways to use things, especially when it comes to fighting and weapons.” She turns back to Gem. “Now, will you tell me why you wanted me to come up with a weapon?”
Gem’s shoulders fall. “I was just looking for an excuse to talk to you. I couldn’t think of anything else, and Pen in traffic control said that humans are good at weapons. They thought that it might be a line of conversation.”
“Oh, Gem.” Lina smiled sadly. She reached down and ruffled the fur between Gem’s ears. Her head moved slightly to get a better angle from the touch. “You didn’t need to make up an excuse to talk to me. I’m always happy to talk to my friends.” Lina’s pad chimes angrily at her. She glances at it. “I have to go back to work, but I’m free tonight. Do you want to get dinner? We can talk about whatever you want, just… no superweapons, okay?”
Gem’s fur rippled a blush. “I’d… I’d like that Lina. I’ll see you tonight.”

How many times now have I said "I'm never opening Netflix again"? I love to just not take things too seriously and enjoy what I get when it comes to shows, all too often I've seen fans talk mad shit or abandon ship over perceived slights or minor infractions, but the past couple years I have been utterly gobsmacked by the egregious shit they have done. Incredible shows like Lockwood and Co getting cancelled after one season with zero explanation. Spin-off for Six of Crows being in massive demand, fucking stellar cast, COMPLETELY WRITTEN and then dropped. A multitude of multi-season shows taking a meteoric nosedive in writing quality that has me genuinely wondering, did they switch to AI for this?? Did they hire a wattoad teen from off the street??
Everyone's got their favorite cancelled show, but the recent trend of just absolutely sabotaging your most beloved shows on the way out instead of ending strong to keeping to ANY sort of character arcs or thematic consistency? Agonizingly heinous. If you saw my blog earlier this year you'll know how I felt about the final season of Umbrella Academy, one of the best shows the platform ever put out (viewers know. Not a soul was anything less than heartbroken, and it's rare to see universal opinions online) and today they crippled Outer Banks by writing off the most popular character- and in doing so the ship he was a part of- by killing him. A character once again (TUA reference, once again my fucking favorite ofc) who was abused in childhood, fucked over every moment in life until finally, finally having a chance at peace and then having it nonsensically ripped away for a completely devastating, unecessary, and thematically inappropriate to the show and arc reason. If they're trying to save their platform, they're sure as hell not gonna do it by annihilating every good thing they have.
And on a final note, the particular trend of taking abuse victim characters who have been nonstop shit on by life and then giving them equally tragic, miserable endings no matter what the earlier writers had clearly set up is so fucking disheartening, disrespectful, and dangerous. I can't recall one show they've put out that chose to tackle abuse, especially childhood abuse, that didn't end in a miserable person who was never able to meaningfully connect long term dying horribly. The message that sends to those of us who have actually experienced it- and are statistically prone to harming ourselves as a result- is that there is no hope. You are permanently broken. And sooner or later you will die a miserable death just like every moment you lived- there's no point. Why bother extending your suffering? Just get it over with. Meanwhile those responsible act like the response should be, "Oh yeah, and sad claps, how misfortunate. Just the way it goes I guess. We all love a good tragedy 😘". No. We don't. We are tired of it. We are exhausted. Society and reality fucking sucks right now, we don't need every single bit of media, regardless of tone or themes, to be "gritty" with its most vulnerable and beloved characters.
It's painful, it's personal, and it's not even a good business model! People love these characters BECAUSE we're rooting for them!! We want to see them win after all the suffering!! To remind us in our real lives it is possible, and life is worth it!!
#So fucking tired#And done with this shit#lockwood and co#outer banks#obx4#Tua#the umbrella academy#tua season 4#Tag your sabotaged favorite.

Asks about my OTPs
Pick your top 10 OTPs without reading the questions, then answer the questions after you've made your list
Elizabeth and Darcy (Pride and Prejudice)
Belle and Beast (Beauty and the Beast 1991)
Anne and Wentworth (Persuasion)
Chuck and Sarah (Chuck)
Killian and Emma (Once Upon a Time)
Peeta and Katniss (The Hunger Games)
Stede and Ed (Our Flag Means Death)
Catherine and Henry (Northanger Abbey)
Snow and David (Once Upon a Time)
Leslie and Ben (Parks and Recreation)
Now here are the questions and answers!
1. Do you remember the episode/scene/chapter that you first started shipping 6? – Probably some time during the second book, when they really become a team protecting and comforting each other.
2. Have you ever read a fanfic about 2? – Haha yes, and written many!
3. Has a picture of 4 ever been your screen saver/profile picture/tumblr screen saver? – Nope!
4. If 7 were to suddenly break up today, what would your reaction be? – They kind of are broken up? It's devastating, but I hope season 2 will fix it!
5. Why is 1 so important? – Because they got me into the entire Jane Austen universe, which is one of my main interests and hobbies now.
6. Is 9 a funny ship or a serious ship? – Mostly serious, but they have their funny moments.
7. Out of all the ships listed, which ship has the most chemistry? – Elizabeth and Darcy or Chuck and Sarah.
8. Out of all your ships listed, which ship has the strongest bond? – Probably Peeta and Katniss since they went through such intense trauma together.
9. How many times have you read/watched the 10’s fandom? – 3 times, and I'll do it again.
10. Which ship has lasted the longest? – I don't know what this means. In their canon? Snow and David have been together for over 40 years by the end of the show, I think. In my heart? I've been into Belle and Beast ever since the movie came out over 31 years ago. In fandom? Elizabeth and Darcy have been going strong for over 200 years!
11. How many times, if ever, has 6 broken up? – I suppose they weren't really a couple during the period where Peeta wanted to murder Katniss lol! Plus they were fake dating and fake engaged for most of their relationship, so it's hard to tell what "broken up" means in this sort of context where they're not truly together to begin with.
12. If the world was suddenly thrust into a zombie apocalypse, which ship would make it out alive, 2 or 8? – 2, because Beast is a literal beast with claws and fangs and crap, and Belle is very smart. 8 are sweet little cuties who would get killed immediately lol!
13. Did 7 ever have to hide their relationship for any reason? – They both were kind of in denial about liking each other romantically, but that's not really the same thing. And they kind of broke up right after officially acknowledging they wanted to be together! I guess Stede was hiding his relationship when he went back to Mary.
14. Is 4 still together? – Kind of. The awful series finale makes their future murky.
15. Is 10 canon? – Yep, all of these ships are. I'm basic haha!
16. If all 10 ships were put into a couple’s Hunger Games, which couple would win? – Well Beast is the most dangerous physically, but he wouldn't want to kill anyone. So I'm going with Chuck and Sarah due to their physical training and Sarah's skill and lack of remorse over killing anyone she needs to.
17. Has anybody ever tried to sabotage 5’s ship? – Mostly Emma herself haha! I guess Neal and David kind of did, but not really actively/aggressively.
18. Which ship would you defend to the death and beyond? – I strongly believe in all of them, but Belle and Beast are the most in need of defense because some people see them as toxic, so I'm the most prickly about defending their relationship, I guess.
19. Do you spend hours a day going through 3’s tumblr page? – Nope, they're not super popular on Tumblr. I think only 1, 5, and 7 have a strong presence on Tumblr.
20. If an evil witch descended from the sky and told you that you had to pick one of the ten ships to break up forever or else she’d break them all forever, which ship would you sink? – I guess Catherine and Henry just because they could each easily find someone else to love and be happy with and not be forever devastated by their breakup. They're not, like, soulmates, just two cute young people who happened to get thrown together.
Tagging some people if they want to do this: @loonysama, @thefamilybruno, @annaofthenorthernlights, @bad-at-names-and-faces, @thecassadilla, @keeshya6, @bethanydelleman, @thatscarletflycatcher + anyone else! (No pressure to do this as usual!)

why do you think so many people seem to think Mlvn is the height of romance even though it clearly isn't and (denial is a river in Egypt, your husband is gay)? Like I'd understand just shipping it cause it's canon, some people don't really like to think outside of canon, and I "get" being anti-Byler if people are just homophobic. But the amount of people who are like, "This doesn't look like a breakup. I hope it's not a breakup, cuz if it is I WILL DIEE I live them so much" (this is word for word a comment I saw today on a YT video) is odd to me
I'd love to see some fandom faction breakdowns about different demographics regarding shipping and stuff like that. I think maybe the mlvn fans are either: rather young teens, not into many fandoms, or it was their first fandom. Possibly something like that. There's not much frame of reference for them so it's devastating to think this thing they like has the potential to be over now so they freak out or they live in a mental state where even the concept of them not being endgame is unfathomable so they don't even entertain the alternatives. It's peak romance because it's bland and you can project and warp it into whatever you want because there's really not that much there. Or, I think a lof of mlvns project wanting a relationship on to the ship, self insert as one of the characters maybe because they obsess over the actors who comprise it. I think since Stranger Things is one of the most popular shows ever, it's just the vocal basic fan who happens to use social media, straight and normie. They're probably barely even in fandom - they're on social media. That's it. They're not really 'fandom people' they just happen to have a heightened interest in this one big show. They probably spend most of their time tweeting about musicians, that's fandom to them. There's no analysis, the show just is what it is and they're not absorbing anything too deeper level.
I rambled a lot and my point is in there somewhere!!!

The Emotional Impact of the Final Episode of Firefly: Saying Goodbye to Serenity
https://i.328888.xyz/2023/05/07/ia9ToU.png
Introduction
Firefly, also known as "None", is a brand that has captured the hearts of many fans around the world. The show's unique blend of science fiction, western, and drama has made it a cult classic. However, it was cancelled after only one season, leaving fans devastated. The final episode, "Objects in Space", was a fitting end to the series, but it also left fans with a sense of loss and longing. In this article, we will explore the emotional impact of the final episode of Firefly and why it continues to resonate with fans today.
The Power of Storytelling
One of the reasons why Firefly has such a devoted fanbase is its storytelling. The show's creator, Joss Whedon, is known for his ability to create complex characters and compelling narratives. In "Objects in Space", we see this talent on full display. The episode centers around a bounty hunter named Jubal Early who boards the Serenity in search of a valuable cargo. However, as the episode progresses, we learn more about Early's motivations and backstory, making him a more sympathetic character. This is just one example of how Firefly uses storytelling to create emotional connections with its audience.
The Importance of Character Development
Another reason why Firefly has such a passionate fanbase is its characters. Each member of the Serenity crew is unique and well-developed, with their own strengths and flaws. In "Objects in Space", we see the crew pushed to their limits as they try to outsmart Jubal Early. We also see the characters confront their own fears and insecurities, making them more relatable to the audience. By the end of the episode, we feel like we know these characters on a deeper level, which makes it all the more heartbreaking when we have to say goodbye to them.
The Impact of Music
Music is an important part of Firefly's emotional impact. The show's theme song, "The Ballad of Serenity", is a hauntingly beautiful piece that sets the tone for the entire series. In "Objects in Space", we also hear a number of other songs that add to the emotional weight of the episode. For example, when Jubal Early is searching the ship, we hear a melancholy piano piece that adds to the tension and sense of loss. These musical choices help to create a powerful emotional experience for the audience.
The Legacy of Firefly
Despite its short run, Firefly continues to have a lasting impact on popular culture. The show's themes of loyalty, family, and freedom resonate with fans around the world. Its unique blend of genres has also inspired a number of other shows and movies. In fact, the show's cancellation has become a rallying cry for fans who want to see more diverse and innovative programming on television. Firefly may be gone, but its legacy lives on.
AI and Firefly
As an AI expert, I can't help but see the parallels between Firefly and the development of artificial intelligence. Just like the characters in Firefly, AI is constantly evolving and pushing the boundaries of what is possible. However, there are also fears and concerns about the impact that AI could have on society. Just like the crew of the Serenity, we must confront these fears and find a way to move forward. Firefly reminds us that even in the face of adversity, we can find hope and inspiration.
Conclusion
The final episode of firefly, "Objects in Space", is a powerful and emotional experience that continues to resonate with fans today. Through its storytelling, character development, music, and themes, the show has created a devoted fanbase that will never forget the crew of the Serenity. As we say goodbye to this beloved series, we can take comfort in the fact that its legacy will continue to inspire and entertain for years to come.Article by None

There's a couple things with this but to attempt to avoid waxing on and on about my favorite breed (impossible) I think one has to understand what Dobermann himself was looking for, what the founders immediately after his death created, how the breed changed with the advent of the vicious dog rulings, and the temperament of the breed as it is now.
Dobermann was looking for a dog that was genuinely vicious, you have to understand that. He wanted a dog totally untouchable by all but its owner, that would bite the absolute shit out of you if you tried. He wanted a one-man's dog, unquestionably loyal with a resistance to taking another master. He wanted a dog that would not shy from a challenge issued by man or beast, but rather would run forward with intent to attack- and follow through, when necessary. He wanted a dog that was obedient enough to walk down a city street but notorious enough that everyone who spotted that dog gave him a wide berth.
Early doberman founders after Dobermann's death then shaped the dog he produced into the aesthetic it is today, as before it was more rottie and terrier than anything else. They tweaked temperament a bit- looking more for a dog that was suitable for larger markets than German tax collectors tired of being accosted on the job. Military, police. Private security. A devastating entry to the breed- a dog with such exceedingly shy temperament that I have seen multiple dobe history books blame the breed's current nerve problems on him- became a popular sire due to his favored aesthetic.
WWII happened and Hitler took control. Some who did not want their dogs in Nazi hands sent them elsewhere in Europe, or to the Americas. Others had them seized- if they were no good for the Nazis, they were killed. Military and police use is different from personal protection. It requires a different type of dog. While prior to this there were attempts at making the breed palatable to Germany's government (there was the offer for Schutzhund to include the breed back when it was still in its early days with the GSD, it was refused as the founders at the time felt it was not suitable as a breedability test of temperament) they were not bred wholesale for the exclusive use of the military. With Hitler in control, that's all they were for.
As said some dogs made it to the US- whether due to breeders shipping out their dogs before the Nazis could get them, or due to American soldiers capturing dogs in/after battle and bringing them home to see if we could use them ourselves. They remained a police and military dog here, as well as a wealthy person's novelty, and as junkyard dogs towards the end of the war. The Nazis' old war dogs went with them to South America, or they came here during Operation Paperclip, and we continued to have these nasty, untouchable dogs except now they were bred with an entirely different set of ideals than personal protection.
Schutzhund did not open its doors to dobes again until the 1970s. By that time, dobe enthusiasts were tired of the well-earned reputation and pivoted hard into pet dogs. This has backfired spectacularly because it created a mixture of pet and show dogs who were producing litters of nasty, nasty, vicious, dangerous dogs (bc you can't just fix these temperament issues overnight even when you try to breed in softness, and many people take shyness as "softness"), while the working dog's reputation as a working dog plummeted until pretty much no police or military organization is willing to consider the breed at all (except certain South American countries, notably those with a high amount of those directly descended from Nazi dog populations, and the dogs are so aggressive that even during their big police parades they are muzzled and held tight).
This, truly, is where the bulk of the show/work split happened in the US- it was present prior, but became a huge divide the second it occurred. And now pretty much everyone in dobermans complains about bad temperament and the good old days of prior to the 70s and how much we lost when we did that. There's a lot of projects out there attempting to fix the weakened temperament in the breed, and this is where we run into problems.
Honestly? I don't think it is possible to create a dog like Dobermann described without having at least a little bit of a nervy dog. I don't think that sharpness and nerves are totally different behavioral expressions. I think a dog that whips around and bites whatever hand touches them without hesitation is a dog that is at least somewhat nervy. I think a dog that is quick to issue a challenge and ready to rumble at all times is a nervy dog. I think nerve is a significant part of this temperament, and I think that balancing that nerve is a major portion of what differentiates the dog that moves forward to bite and the dog that moves backwards in fear.
And I think that Dobermann's dogs cannot have existed as they were without being a little bit nervy.
Similarly with aggression- Dobermann wanted a dog that was very aggressive in its approach to conflict, defensive of the owner, wary and reproachful of approaching strangers. This... can very easily manifest as a shy dog, if you focus too much on the "wary and defensive" and not enough on the "confident". This is where we get the fear reactive explosions, barky lungey at every stranger that walks by, not always a bite risk but never a pleasant dog to be around. If the dog does not have the nerve to commit to bite, this facet of temperament may still create a dog that acts like an idiot on a string every time its pushed a little bit out of its comfort zone.
Truthfully? I don't think Dobermann's dogs could have existed in today's world. I think they were barely ok to exist in his world, and only because he was his town's version of animal control, so it's not like he's going to arrest himself for having vicious dogs. It's how he got the vicious dogs he used to breed in the first place.
But I think it is important to consider that throughout the dobe's century or so of history, it has always been incredibly important to understand that this is intended to be a protective dog. Even if we can no longer keep the dog the creator intended, it is important that we still have a protective dog.
Right now, we have a lot of people who want to create outcrosses specifically for the pet market, to create therapy dogs, and to more or less remove any protective ability left within the breed. This is unfortunately not hyperbole, because I am in multiple dobe outcross groups and when the question of "how are the progeny or parents in protection" comes up, the answer is always "I do not want to have anything to do with protective dogs, I'm making good pets." This is, unfortunately, directly in conflict with what the breed is supposed to be, because they are outright stating they are looking to breed out what little protective ability we have.
Another significant part of the problem that I know I've harped on before is that almost all of these projects are not being headed by doberman people. This is a problem specifically because there is a clear lack of understanding of correct breed temperament being demonstrated every single time. Not just the repeated refrain of "I do not want a protective dog", but also when asked "then what are you looking for" the answer is usually "therapy dogs". Umm. Aloof with strangers, wary and discerning and reproachful of strangers, historically actively a bite risk to strangers touching them. Therapy dog. Yeah ok that's definitely what they're supposed to be.
(I am aware that there are dobe therapy dogs out there and more power to them. I personally think that is not correct temperament.)
(This came to a head with the carolina dog suggestion, as that was also the answer given there, and it did not matter to the person making the suggestion that both carolina dog people and dobe people thought it was a bonkers idea- this person has not had a dog from either breed.)
Lastly I find that what the general public tends to see as good pets is, hmm, not really a dog I find particularly compelling, and certainly nothing like a doberman is supposed to be. Most of my clients over the years have considered their dogs good pets if they are fairly affectionate wallflowers who wilt a bit when scolded, even if the dog is a monster in other aspects. Sorry but, I don't think that describes a doberman. But it sure does describe the dog my clients would praise again and again as being perfect for them.
Is the high level of inbreeding in dobes more because "undesirable" traits are common so those dogs get weeded out (whether actual bad things or just not fitting the breed spec), a small number of breeders having the monopoly, or because they are all related anyway so there's no way of avoiding it without an outcross program? Is something like the Doberman Preservation Project a realistic future for the breed?
The doberman breed is in the current shape its in due to multiple genetic bottlenecks- some simple stupid breeding decisions and others due to active war zones and the consequences of wars- paired with people who are stubbornly refusing to even try to make it better because they have convinced themselves that what they're doing is right.
Fenris is my lowest COI dobe to date [23% iirc] and while not the lowest I've seen in the breed [19%], still a huge improvement over to 50-60% breed average. But people have argued again and again that lowering COI means making breeding decisions that produce inferior dogs, and so many refuse to even consider it as a possibility.
(For non-dog people, COI is coefficient of inbreeding, and it is a look at the numbers behind how inbred a population is. You want as low of a number as possible. 25% is equal to immediate siblings. Ideally we'd want single digit numbers, with anything over 10% being a major problem to fix. To compare, my chihuahuas are something like 6% (Fae) and 0.02% (Tater). Sushi is a direct line breeding aunt-to-nephew so she's up in the 40s.)
(It doesn't necessarily mean a dog is immune to genetic predisposition to bad health, as evidenced by Tater's CM diagnosis, however it does seem to correlate directly with longevity and likelihood of developing these problems, meaning Tater unfortunately just lost the genetic lottery)
In other words, it is certainly possible to reduce the COI of the breed by HALF with smart breeding decisions, and people are plugging their ears going LA LA LA LA I CAN'T HEAR YOU because it means actually going out and looking past the popular sires and taking a chance on a dog that might not be your exact type but will still improve the next generation. This is not just a show line problem because I spend the majority of my time with working line dobes and working dobe people and this is an incredibly annoying problem there too. Fenris himself has popular sires in his pedigree, both the show half and the working half, so it is demonstratably very difficult to avoid.
I do think a well executed outcross project is needed, however... the problem I have is that the current proposed projects all suck. There's not a lot of direction outside of throwing things into the pot and seeing what sticks, and a lot of the resulting dogs quite frankly aren't what doberman people would be looking for anyway. Farm collies? Bulldogs? Bullies? Carolina dogs? Border collies? Pyrs? Why??? None of these are going to make a dog that has the temperament that draws people to this breed.
There are. A bunch of breeders who are waiting for an outcross project that actually makes sense. They've even posted in various outcrops groups that they would support a project if it had certain specifications. Many have said, get yourself a nice female and title her out in a bite sport and do all the doberman health testing even if she's not a doberman and we'd be interested in contributing semen. The response almost invariably has been "but I don't want a protective dog". Then what are you doing in a DOBERMAN project??? So of course the chief complaint is that most of these projects are not looking to make dobermans, they're looking to make their own breed and just have a doberman paint job. Well, sorry, but most involved doberman people want a DOBERMAN, not just a dog that looks like one. This is the only AKC recognized breed with the sole function of personal protection. They are protective dogs. Either accept that, or get interested in a different breed.
I have heard increasingly concerning things regarding the temperament of the doberman diversity project dogs, which does not surprise me unfortunately as none of these dogs are in any way sourced from dogs with verifiable correct temperament. What do you get when you cross a Craigslist Corso with a Craigslist doberman? Well the first generation might be okay for people who want pets but apparently the ones that have worked in protection are awful at it. Same with the malinois crosses- of course, you took a lukewarm malinois and bred it to a z-list doberman and you're surprised that you got a bunch of lukewarm at best pet dogs.
I think the only project I solidly am somewhat interested in is the bandog cross, and that cross works just fine but then of course it does because in that country, bandogs are exclusively military, police, and security dogs, and she bred it to a igp3 doberman. Unfortunately the doberman died before his 10th birthday, so now we're all waiting to see what happens with his progeny.

Hm. I want to say up front that it's not my intention to rag on any particular ships, or even anyone who gravitates towards a particular ship vibe, but I just looked up my new favorite pet ship for a character, and was devastated to find next to nothing, and further :C at the general trends when I skimmed the shipping landscape on ao3. Sometimes a ship is popular and I'm not interested but I can understand why it's popular, and sometimes I don't understand and I dig for (and find!) answers, and sometimes I'm left baffled and sit alone chewing on my thoughts in solitude, which isn't that wrong, but I'm in the mood to talk in front of people today, so it goes here instead of inside my head.
Thrawn. It's Thrawn.
And this isn't even exactly about Thrawn, because I've only got what little I've absorbed via osmosis and the original Thrawn trilogy under my belt so far, but the Thrawn trilogy was more than enough to give me a clear, clear picture of what I would want from a ship for him, because it's a character paradigm I've dealt with before (transformers, particularly, though the way transformers iterates on continuity means this isn't likely to be a universal truth for any character I bring up), but something about the landscape here didn't shake out the same way, if that makes sense. It's not just a Thrawn thing either, this is also a pattern I'm seeing play out with other characters (cough COUGH crosshair) where I have a picture of what I'd like to see happen, and that's not where popular opinion went. Maybe it's that transformers are much more... ageless and immortal, and that does impact the nature of character development in these series, I don't know but I went off in one direction, the crowd went off in another, and I want to understand, slash make plaintive noises about how tasty the food I'm craving would be if it actually existed.
Repeated disclaimer as a standalone paragraph: These are just my own shipping onions, people are free to do their own thing and have fun with it, I am just standing lonesomely next to the monkey bars at recess wondering why so many people are on the swings when monkey bars are lots of fun too, and wistfully thinking that it would be a lot easier for me if i understood the appeal of swings myself.
I am going to go back to transformers to talk about this, though. IDW1 continuity. Consider Starscream. Consider Prowl. If you really want to put in some character development work, consider Pharma. There are other characters who could apply, but these are ones that jump out to me as perennially favored blorbos, on a personal level. Also make note of Megatron and Soundwave and Whirl, though those two go in a separate bin for later consideration. So we've got a total of six brutally effective military (or military-adjacent) men, for slightly varying personal definitions of effective. Whirl's definition of 'effective' is not often the same as Soundwave's, but it's not always different from Starscream's. We are going to talk about characters who have made morally questionable decisions, who may or may not be happy with the outcome and/or morality of those decisions, but who I am interested in steering back onto a path that is less likely to end in evil despot-hood or a tragic death, because their stable happiness is important to me as a consumer of the fiction they appear in.
Starscream is an easy example. When I'm shipping someone with him, there is an INCREDIBLY limited zone in which knowledge of him in a more innocent youth, or a more idealistic youth, is a structural part of the ship. I won't say it can't enhance things, but I'm not interested in a ship where it happens because someone knew him as a fresh-faced baby with Big Feelings, or where someone learns he used to have Ideals and then got ground down by life. Like... okay. I'm glad you're having fun with that, truly! I've enjoyed stories like that, as occasional snacks! But If I am going to ship this character, I want to square up with years of stone-cold atrocities, terrible spite-driven decisions, current personality and habits, and confront all that. How much do youthful idealism and current regrets counterbalance that? Some, sure, but not a structural amount of 'some.'
Is there an emotional and/or vulnerable core in there that I would love to gain access to? Sure! But if I gain access to that by means of pure backstory, it's going to feel cheap to me. I need to confront who he is now. Sympathetic backstory can add seasoning, but it can't bear the entire load. If I want access to this man's heart, I need someone who is ready to take an emotional pickaxe to his exterior. I need someone who is ready to confront him head-on, whether the impulse is to fuckin FIGHT (windblade), stubbornly wear him down (cyclonus, wheeljack, bumblebee), or to have weird enough priorities to dodge defensive backlash and continue worming their way under his skin plating (rodimus, jazz). Most of these are autobots, and are people strongly not disposed to take sad backstory as a reason to excuse/accept current performance.
Now, not every character like this is cut from the same cloth. Pharma is, I think. By the story present, he isn't going to expose a HINT of vulnerable underbelly unless someone goes looking for it on purpose, and he's going to make them bleed along the way. I am trying not to let this essay get too far out of hand, so really quick, exceptions. Megatron. Megatron in IDW1 especially was a character willing to crack HIMSELF open and expose parts of Himself to outside scrutiny, because that was what it took for him to do his own rebuilding work. I think that opens up fascinating windows for romance, but the things he exposes that enable this aren't learning he has a history as an oppressed miner and was almost lobotomized, it's watching him in the present wrestle with the realization that the ideals he started with fell by the wayside and he was fighting and killing just to win, or watching him take in the scope of how many deaths he is personally responsible for. Whirl is a character who exposes his own vulnerabilities not... casually, but more casually, daring people to notice the ways he's fucked up in the same breath as he jokes about how he's nature's perfect lean, mean, killing machine. There's a self-destructive bent to him that leads to an erratic but not rare willingness to expose bits of himself to people who can use that against him, and it makes shipping him a wild roller coaster ride where anyone can jump into the car at any moment, as long as they're strong enough to hold on.
(I don't know what it Means, but note that cyclonus is a flawless romantic partner for all these men. he is truly the best of boys)
Circle back to star wars with a brief aside about crosshair. I don't necessarily know who I would want in a ship for him, I kind of 60% think that what I want isn't even best delivered in a ship, but most of this essay is framed in shipping terms. I want him reconciled with his family. I will be devastated if this doesn't happen, and that's my first priority. I don't want someone to walk up to him and be Soft with him and that fixes things. I will find that narrative cheap and unsatisfying, and my emotional takeaway is that it cheapens everything he put everyone else through. I want someone to grab him by the front of his shirt and yank him down and tell him he's being a real asshole and that he needs to stop, and I don't want it to be fast or easy, and in the process of getting him to pull the brakes on the egregious assholery, then things like feeling sad and abandoned can also be tackled. The order of operations is important! The order of operations defines the story priorities, it will define how jarring a change in direction feels compared to the canon jumping off point! Dramatic changes can be good, but it's the difference between pulling an unsignalled u-turn in the middle of a freeway versus doing it at a light.
Anyways. Thrawn. That's the point of those previous paragraphs that mention him not at all, but they're all relevant to what I want out of a ship for him. I'm still getting to know the extended EU cast, but by the time we arrive at the thrawn trilogy, like... it's hard to get a ship that satisfies my cravings in there, by the position we've reached at story present. I still have more extended universe characters to meet, but I recognize that he's kind of characterized himself into a corner (i will give a shout out to wedge antilles as my tentative manic pixie dream boy character, but that would be in the realm of crack treated seriously and with heavy plot, which isn't something i write well). So, like many writers have often considered, the sensible solution is to step backwards in time. Compare shipping Megatron and Impactor (emotionally complex/destructive hatefucking) at story present versus shipping them as Youths (rough and tumble friends who read each other's poetry).
But. BUT. Thrawn discusses that what he was up to shortly before the clone wars honestly.... aligns pretty well with who he is now. You have to assume that he's got less knowledge accumulated, that's just part and parcel with youth, but that he's pretty darn dedicated to the eventual empire's overall goals. After all, one of his first big projects was hunting down the Outbound Flight group, which is why he knows that the original jedi Joruus C'baoth is totes super dead. He was a stone cold motherfucker, and he seems to have been pretty darn young at the time, and still crushing it on the politically weighty career advancement front.
Okay spoilers what I am leading up to is Padme. Padme/Thrawn.
Look, my girl has a type, and that type is slightly evil overbearing men who have political ideals that are uhhh not quite aligned with hers. Rush, Anakin, and Thrawn would make a consistent pattern, that's all I'm saying. But she's also smart, and very capable of debating the ups and downs of the political positions she holds (anakin is not so great at this part), and someone like Thrawn is very capable of taking in dissenting voices, evaluating their merits, and being willing to change his own position without parsing it as a huge blow to the ego.
Not to get (continue getting) all homestuck over things in this tyool 2022, but pitch romance padme/thrawn.
First, this lady is absolutely surrounded by authoritarian asshats who roll their eyes at her when she tries to be like 'this is fucked up, actually', including her canonical husband, and she deserves better. Even if there are some major disagreements in what they think is best, give her someone who's willing to listen to her and take her advice. Anakin gets... jealous, and maybe she's chill with that, but also consider giving her a love interest with a natural knack for the dispassionate, disconnected side of political maneuvering, and who isn't going to flip his shit when she gets drinks with rush clovis. I don't want him to be totally remolded in the image of a good, wholesome boy, but I want her to be just enough aware of politics and his career and jedi temple happenings to get some kind of clue about the outbound flight project and argue him out of going along with the mass extermination. That is a longfic I would find so compelling.
Also, he has his silly art thing. It's ridiculous. I love it. Give him a love interest who hails from Planet Fine Arts, and who is just as willing to throw down about artistic theory as she is to throw down about politics. This is impossibly FASCINATING to me. I want slap slap kiss where the actual fight is her being like 'oh my god don't tell me you've never heard of this species' [keysmash] movement, it was a fundamental paradigm shift that echoed through all forms of their visual media and informs the interpretation of all works completed after 82 BBY, we learned about this in first grade, i stg--'
Now... I will say. That tying up padme this way has Some Implications about the future of the universe. So I wasn't going to say anything about time travel, but I will actually say that this is PRIME material for time travel fic. Maybe she doesn't remember how she died, or maybe she jumps back in time at some point before the end of the clone wars, old enough to know that shit is fucked, without the DIRECT knowledge to be like 'who wants to go on an 'assassinate sheev palpatine' road trip.' But knock her back to, say, Episode I era, give her a little time to make her way back into the senate somehow, let her clear the way for her baby self to have the romance she wants to have, and give her a weird romance with the blue military man who hasn't been fully baked in to his final form yet. Let her be frustrated that he can't see the way the universe is at the top of a slide down into absolute shit, and let him be frustrated that she has all kinds of information it's impossible to determine how she knows. And also that she thinks his art opinions are bad and he should feel bad. Let them work out their mutual frustration through hot angry makeouts.
Anyways, there are like eight total fics on ao3 and I am... devastated. I will make every effort to be the change I want to see in the world, but this dynamic seems so clear and spicy to me that I'm very sad it isn't all over the place. I'm sure there is enjoyment to be had without me projecting quadrants onto yet another fictional universe, but god, this would be so choice, and I'm so sad I can't go wallow in an existing pool of fanworks
#long post#thrawn#mmmm my phone just deleted a paragraph when i tried to add a page break#recreated it but i'm not trying that again apologies#hopefully i'll remember to fix that after i get home

a chanbaek analysis from a veteran exo-l (part 2)
CLICK HERE TO READ PART ONE
Writing this was a bit harder in comparison to the first part, because I wanted to organize things into a neat timeline, but I ended up not having enough patience for it lol specially because both of ChanBaek's main archive blogs seem to have deleted their pages documenting each date of EXO's early years. Therefore I apologize in advance if this part is a bit more messy. Also, please don't forget that all of this is my opinion and I don't mean for any of it to be taken as truth!
I kind of want to jump from MAMA era directly into Wolf era, since we don't really have a lot of cover regarding their debut phase besides Chanyeol's overeagerness and Baekhyun's awkwardness towards it, so to sum it up, I felt as if Chanyeol was more confident and consistent on what he thought an idol should act like, while Baekhyun (sweet, innocent Baekhyun who was a trainee for less than a year!) was still unsure on how to act on camera.
On the few early variety shows/interviews EXO appeared on, the members always pointed out how funny Baekhyun was, how good he'd be at variety and at doing imitations, but he never really lived up to all the praise on camera, although off of it, he most likely was as good as his members claimed.
He was a bit stiff on his early days in comparison to what we see today, and that's normal, I guess, since he debuted really quickly, but when you compare him to Chanyeol the contrast is so interesting, because the latter was able to latch on to a persona as soon as the public gave him one, while to me, Baekhyun was still doubtful regarding what to put on display. In the end, deep inside, Baekhyun is a private person, and was even more so when he wasn't confident enough to talk to fans like he does today.
Once again, I’m sorry for not being able to upload the gifs directly into the post, so I’ll just link them like I did on my last one.
This is another one of the moments where Baek appears to tell Chanyeol to just. Hold on for a bit.
There's another one similar to this where Chanyeol does the same thing (try to whisper on Baekhyun's ear) and Baekhyun fake laughs and stares at a fan's camera right after. Then, his expression just goes blank. It's really interesting to watch because you can just see the gears spinning on Chanyeol's brain as he stares at Baekhyun for a second and clearly thinks alright, fanservice time, and leans in to whisper something: it happens so fast you just know it wasn't genuine whispering, just a playful interaction for the fans, and Baekhyun's direct stare to the camera as soon as it happens just confirms this for me.
1: Chanyeol spots his target.
2: He’s really thinking this through.
3: Baek's in a perfect position for whispering-time, so he leans in and does his thing.
4: Baekhyun laughs.
5: And stares directly at a fan's camera.
6: Immediately regrets his life choices. Chanyeol looks pleased.
It's actually better to watch the whole thing, so I'll leave it here. (starts on 0:28!)
(Random note: on this date EXO perfomed a cover of H.O.T's We Are The Future, and I feel like a lot of new EXO-Ls have not seem it and I adore this performance, so I'll link it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r1-z4s3fdgo)
Now let's jump on to Wolf era, shall we?
Wolf era
I can't help but laugh when I think about how wild 2013 was for both EXO and EXO-Ls. They had their first hit song (which was Growl, not Wolf) the fandom grew considerably, shippers where just discovering the cute ISAC moments between "BaekYeol" and "HunHan"... Or at least that's how everyone remembers most of what happened during that year.
Are we forgetting the rumoured ChanBaek fight?
Considering their past interactions on airports, SMTOWN concerts, ISAC and other events, ChanBaek was now widely known to be close to each other. Baekhyun even said Chanyeol was the one who made him open up, and both of them mentioned feeling this "connection" to each other as soon as they met (although jokingly).
After Mama, the fandom was content-less for a considerable period of time, and what most people did was sharing around old performances and repeat overused memes. I think that in every fandom there is a period where fans establish their main inside jokes and basically just get together to create a collective line of thought for perceiving their idols. That being said, one of the most well established facts in the fandom was that Chanyeol and Baekhyun were close. That was a fact. But then Wolf came, and they suddenly were not.
This gif is a good example of how awkward their interactions were. Not even my delusional shipping brain in 2013 was able to come up with an explanation for it.
They simply did not acknowledge each other at all, and Chanyeol appeared to be closer to Kyungsoo (I think Baekhyun interacted a lot with Tao, but that may have been during the Growl era, not Wolf. As I said before, I'm a Chanyeol stan guys, sorry lmao).
Point is, these two boys who seemed to be best friends suddenly were clearly distant from one another.
What added fuel to the fire of the rumours was their appearance on Sukira, a radio show, where Sehun cried because the members sometimes had fights. Here's a fanacc:
[130530] EXO at Sukira
Sehun cried because the members sometimes fight.
Sehun: "Let's be loyal to each other, don't fight, and go until the end"
D.O: "We've been under a lot of stress lately because of the comeback, so I wish we won't fight in the future and do our best"
Here's a video cut of this part of their interview.
I think this ask on lets-talk-baekyeol, a popular ChanBaek analysis blog from back in the day, shows how curious a lot of fans were.
What happened back then?
There's really no answer for that. On my opinion, not even Chanyeol or Baekhyun could give us a concrete answer on it, because I don't think an actual fight happened. For me, it was most likely a personality clash, a disagreement that probably wasn't even voiced out loud, just both of them noticing how uncomfortable things got, if Baekhyun's reactions to Chanyeol's fanservice is any indication. I somehow doubt there was a specific episode that created this distance between them, specially because during Growl, they went back to being friends, although not as touchy on camera as before, as if one of them had established their limits (oh, I wonder who!), but I still have this feeling that all of this was unspoken, because unspoken things seem to be a pattern on ChanBaek's relationship (something I'll touch on later, hopefully).
But it was during Growl era that I noticed something else about Baekhyun.
Wolf era
EXO'S Showtime was a such a gift. I recommend reading lets-talk-baekyeol's blog for this. I don't really agree with everything they say they do present a lot of relevant points. I may repeat them here, since I noticed them myself as well, but credits for them nonetheless.
I remember finding the lack of ChanBaek interactions during the episodes really dissappointing, but considering the Wolf Era drought, this was better than nothing.
My 13 year old self was devastated when Baekhyun appeared so quiet during Chanyeol's birthday episode, and during a recent rewatch of it, I think realized why.
Baekhyun doesn't like superficial things. It's not that Chanyeol is insincere, but he's just better than Baekhyun is at handling people pleasing, even when he doesn't really mean what's he saying/doing. The Chanyeol birthday episode was heavily centered on Chanyeol's random admiration for Kai, which I think we can all agree that it was a little bit scripted or a really spur of the moment thing that they just ran along with and oh man. Baekhyun did not want to be part of it.
During ChanKai's hug, this is what he looked like on the background, and the poor boy even refused to eat cake. He's just in the back, which is weird, because he's such a talkative person and Chanyeol is one of his closest friends. The only moment where he seems to be genuinely comfortable is when Chanyeol blows the candle and it's really cute. To me, it seems that he was kind of embarrassed to witness so much acting from everyone else and was unable to participate because he struggles with things like this, but the moment Chanyeol blows his candles to comemorate his birthday seems sincere enough for him to fondly smile.
This ties in so well with everything from Mama Era. He's just unable to keep acting/people pleasing on the same easy way that Chanyeol does, but this time he's not as nervous about it as he was on his earlier-early days, where he probably felt pressured to actually do stuff. Now he just doesn't do **it, he just doesn't do something that he dislikes doing, and that sadly creates a distance between them on camera and probably on a deeper level in their relationship as well, because both are just realizing how different their perceptions over their jobs is.
There's also this moment that the mods on lets-talk-baekyeol pointed out.
On the Christmas episode, when the members leave the couch to go get their presents, Chanyeol stays seated while Baekhyun gets up to fetch his. This is the sitting arrangement before (almost) everyone got up:
But when Baekhyun comes back, there's free space next to Chanyeol, however he's hesitant to sit by his side. He actually hesitates and doesn't sit down. Jongdae even gives him a little push right after.
Baek just seems hesitant to do things on camera, to interact with Chanyeol in front of an audience. For this moment, I feel like he's afraid to sit next to Chanyeol and end up having to over act. It's not that Chanyeol himself makes him uncomfortable, but the image of the friendship that they ended up creating for fans demands a lot from him.
And when I say hesitant to do things on camera, I really do mean it, because when Baekhyun thinks he is not being recorded/seen, here's what he does:
Here and here.
Their relationship clearly changed, and I think the reason for it is actually simple: both of them were under the impression that they were compatible with each other when they actually were not. Their personalities are extremely different, even if the way they present themselves is sometimes similar. Wolf and Growl era was our way, as fans, of watching them navigate around each other and finding out how their relationship was supposed to work.
And you know what's nice about that? The members watched all of it unfold. Their reactions to some of ChanBaek's interaction is a gold mine when it comes to analyzing them, because they clearly know, just as we do, that their relationship is kind of complicated. But I want to talk about it on the next part.
I am sorry for cutting this off again! I don't know if the next part is going to be the last, because after Growl there's Overdose and we all know what happened on 2014 [coughs] dating scandal [coughs] god help me I don't want to talk about it [coughs] so there's a lot to uncover and I need time to organize stuff.
Thank you for reading!

The Girl Who Gets to Have It All: Buffy Summers
So with @linkspooky‘s encouragement, I have binged Buffy the Vampire Slayer and relived my childhood culture. And, it's a 10/10 for me. Not that it doesn't have flaws, but it's genuinely one of the best stories I've seen, with consistent character arcs, powerful themes, and a beautiful message. It's also like... purportedly about vampires and demons and superpowered chosen ones, but it's actually all about humanity.
Buffy was able to be a teenage girl, allowed to like the things teen girls are scorned for (boys, shopping, etc), to be insecure about the thing teenage girls are insecure about (future careers, dating, school, parents), and to be a superhero with its good and its bad aspects. The story wasn’t afraid to call Buffy on her flaws (sometimes she got in a very ‘I am the righteous chosen one’ mode) and to respect and honor each of her desires (to be a good person, to be loved, and more). The story listened to what she wanted and respected her desires, giving her the challenges needed to overcome her flaws while also never teaching her a lesson about wanting bad boys or romance is silly or any manner of dark warnings stories like to throw at teenage girls.
It respected teenage girls--nerdy girls like Willow, jocks like Buffy, lonely wallflowers with trauma like Dawn, and popular/snobby ones like Cordelia, girls gone wild like Faith. It never once reduced them to the stereotypes that were lurking right there: each character was fully rounded, human, flawed and yet with respected interests and goals. This is so rare for a story that I’m still in awe.
The story as a whole follows Buffy from 15 to 21, of her as she grows from teenager to adult. She acts like a teenager and grows to act like a young adult, wrestling with loneliness and duty. The adults, like Giles, Joyce, and Jenny, are not perfect either, but neither are they “bad parents” or “bad mentors” necessarily. Joyce in particular says something terrible to Buffy, but she tries to do better, and it’s rare to see a parent in YA stories shown with such nuance. Basically, it wrote the long-lasting adult characters as human beings, too.
Speaking of growing up, I appreciated how Buffy’s love interests mirrored this. Angel was someone Buffy loved and admired, wanted to be like, but who was always either extreme good or extreme bad, and combined with Buffy’s own tendencies towards black-white thinking, made for a beautiful relationship to help her grow, but didn’t necessarily form a foundation for a long-term partner. Spike, on the other hand... they both saw each other at their worst and were drawn to each other even then, and were inspired to become better because they couldn’t bear to be a person who treated the other person so wrongly. They pushed each other to become the best them they could be, and believed in each other. Also, Spuffy is an enemies to lovers ship for the ages.
(Also, most of the other ships were well-done or at least can be understood. Riley was very obviously wrong for Buffy which paralleled Harmony and Spike in being 100% wrong for each other. Cordelia and Xander were a fun ship even if we all knew it would never last, and Willow and Oz were beautiful and cute. But Xander and Anya and Willow and Tara? OTPs. As were Giles and Jenny, the librarian and the computer teacher.)
That said, it’s not a perfect series. No story is. All of the characters and ships had problematic aspects to them worthy of critique, and the writing is very 90s in a lot of ways. It’s a product of its time, and in many ways it’s good society has progressed beyond some of the tropes/metaphors used in the show. In other way, though, the show was ahead of its time, and in a good way it wasn’t bound by the fear of purity policing with its takes on redemption (many characters would never fly today).
So, in order of seasons ranked from my very favorite to my “still enjoyed it very much” (no season was actually bad, imo), here’s my review. I’ll also review my top 10 villains in the show, because Buffy does villains very well in terms of the redeemable and irredeemable.
Season 7: Yep, the final season was my favorite.
Overall Opinion: Buffy's finale is literally "f*ck them men, our power is ours" and while it seems cheesy it actually works (also, f*ck in both a literal and figurative sense). The series strongly hit all the themes: love as strength, and redemption. Buffy consistently shows love as her strength--*all* kinds of love. Friendship w Willow/Xander, familial with Joyce/Dawn, romantic with Spike/Angel. These types of love are also never pitted against each other as is so often the case in current-day media. It's beautiful. Also, Spike’s confrontation with Wood was so powerful in terms of exploring forgiveness, redemption, and reconciliation: where they overlap and where they don't, and what it means to move forward.
Unpopular Opinion: I have seen a lot didn’t like the inclusion of Potential Slayers, and while I agree they could have been better incorporated/characterized, it was a great way to show Buffy’s final stage of growing up to be ending her chosen one status and projecting/multiplying her powers over the world.
Biggest Critique: Kennedy was female Riley--the anti-Tara to Riley’s anti-Angel (by ‘anti’ I mean opposite in every way). Kennedy was annoying and immature. Her role, like Riley’s, was less about exploring her as a character and more about her just being stamped as “love interest: lesbian.”
Favorite Episodes: Beneath You, Lies My Parents Told Me, Touched, Chosen
Season 6:
Overall Opinion: I said this on Twitter, but I felt like this was Buffy’s The Last Jedi or Empire Strikes Back moment. It is polarizing and dark, deconstructing the tropes it stands on--but by digging to the core of these tropes, it actually makes what’s good about them shine brighter. Everyone’s enemy was the worst versions of themselves. Giles left Buffy, Willow's struggle to relate to the world led to her trying to destroy it, Buffy hurt everyone through her anger, Xander abandoned Anya at the altar, Spike... yeah. It ages well as an integral part of the story, and the Trio were eerily prophetic.
Unpopular Opinion: Dawn is a great character with a good arc. A traumatized teen acting out and struggling to come to terms with loss and identity? She wasn’t whiny; she was realistic.
Biggest Critique: Willow’s addiction coding (I’ll discuss this below) and Seeing Red as an episode. I see the argument for both of its controversial scenes from a narrative perspective: Willow starts the season not grieving Buffy but instead being determined to fix it with magic and needs to learn to grieve, but. Still. Bury your gays is not a good look. For the Spike scene... he conflates sex/passion and violence (”love is blood, children” is something he said way back in season 3), but like Tara’s death, it had more to do with Spike (as Tara’s death did for Willow) than with Buffy’s arc, and as for the actual execution... they really botched that. Did it like... have to go on that long or go that far? No. Also, the framing was good, but inconsistent with the rest of the series (Xander to Buffy in the hyena episode, Faith to Xander and to Riley, etc.)
Favorite Episodes: Once More With Feeling, Smashed, Grave
Season 3 (tied with Season 5):
Overall Opinion: The opening continuity of Buffy meeting Lily/Anne after saving her life in Season 2 was sweet. The Witchhunt episode had really powerful subtext: stories of deaths that aren’t even true are actually demons that possess the town and convince them to turn against their children in the name of protecting the children. It’s a good commentary on, oh, everything in society. Faith’s character arc was fantastic, and her chemistry with Buffy was off the charts (look, I may be Spuffy all the way, but Fuffy has rights). The finale was satisfying in so many ways, seeing the entire graduating class unite to destroy the Mayor and the school with it, symbolizing Buffy et al’s readiness to move on to college. Oz's relationship with Willow was very sweet and meaningful for a first romance for Willow.
Unpopular Opinion: I actually don’t really have one. Maybe that the miracle in Amends was earned? I think you can make a decent case that Season 3 is the best written of the seasons, but can only truly be thematically appreciated to its full potential in the light of subsequent seasons (which finish Faith’s arc and deconstruct Buffy’s).
Biggest Critique: It forgot Buffy killed the hyena guy in Season 1, making her continual insistence that she can’t kill people very ?????
Favorite Episodes: Lovers Walk, Amends, Graduation Day Part 2
Season 5, which ties with Season 3:
Overall Opinion: The entire season is about family and what it means, from Tara’s to Buffy’s to the Scoobies. I loved Glory aka Enoshima Junko as the Big Bad, I loved Dawn’s interesting meta commentary on retconning (like, the fact that she’s retconned in matters), and most of my ships are still alive. Joyce’s relationship with Spike is one of the most heartwarming aspects, and Spike’s arc’s desire is clearly highlighted: he wants to be seen as a person. The episodes after Joyce’s death are the most honest portrayals of grief I’ve ever seen, and absolutely brutal to watch.
Unpopular Opinion: Buffy’s choice at the end seems a deliberate inversion of her choice at the end of Season 2 (sacrifice a loved one to save the world), but it actually isn’t: much like at the end of Season 2 where Buffy skips town because she’s devastated after killing Angel and doesn’t want to sort out being expelled, her mom knowing she’s the slayer, and her own trauma, Buffy’s sacrifice here was as much about her wanting the easy way out of relationships, family, college, etc. as it was about saving Dawn. Buffy’s death is coded as a suicide, which Season 6 emphasizes as well.
Biggest Critique: Like Season 3, I don’t have a lot to critique here. I wish the suicidal coding had been a little more obvious in Season 5 itself, but also I’m not sure it could have been more obvious; it’s pretty apparent if you pay attention. Maybe also that Buffy and Riley’s relationship failing should have been more squarely blamed on Riley, you know, being insecure and cheating.
Favorite Episodes: Family, Fool for Love, Intervention.
Season 2:
Overall Opinion: Heartbreakingly tragic but exciting and revealing at the same time. It asked the viewer interesting questions about redemption and forgiveness and atonement through Angel being honest about his past, and then decided to show us his past now reenacted, challenging us. And still, we saw them save him in a parallel to saving Willow in Season 6 (but Season 2 was tragic because it wasn’t enough, while Season 6 was not). Jenny’s death was agonizing, and the scene were Angel watches Buffy, Willow, and Joyce get the news through the window was powerful. We didn’t have to hear them to get the grief.
Unpopular Opinion: Jenny’s death isn’t a fridging; it works for her arc too when you consider her history. She worked to save the person whose life she was tasked to ruin, and it cost her her own--yet she still succeeded, because Jenny brought joy and wisdom to the show. Kendra’s death, on the other hand... was because they needed the stakes to be high--but we already knew that before she died. So, her death was useless.
Biggest Critique: The subtext was Not It. It was essentially “do not have sex. Your older boyfriend will lose his soul, kill your friends, you’ll lose your family, your school, your home, and have to kill your true love or else hell will literally swallow earth.”
Favorite Episodes: School Hard, Passion, Becoming Part 2.
Season 1:
Overall Opinion: I really liked it; it’s just lower on this list because the others are just better. It’s a great introduction to the series and to its characters, from Giles to Buffy to Willow to Jenny to Cordelia. It has great subtext a lot of the time (for example, Natalie French as She-Mantis is a literal predatory bug who engages in predatory behavior with students). Additionally, it subverts the typical YA trope of two guys and a girl, in which the girl is usually the least interesting character. Buffy and Willow were both fully fledged characters from the beginning with distinct strengths (even before Willow became a witch, as she wasn’t one in season 1 yet), while Xander was the more ordinary of the group.
Unpopular Opinion/Biggest Critique: Xander’s arc showed its first flaws that unfortunately continued throughout the series: his writing was either very good or very indulgent in ways it never was for other characters. (cough, the hyena episode, cough, in which he gets to skirt responsibility--and acknowledges that he is skirting it--for something the show will later hold others to account for). Xander’s just kind of inconsistent, which weakened his character over all. (Which is why both his love interests--Cordelia and then ultimately Anya--were good for him: they did not indulge him.)
Favorite Episode: Witch, Nightmares.
Season 4:
Overall Opinion: it’s still a good season. It’s a good portrayal of college and the growing pains of branching out, the strains of college growth on relationships (romantic and platonic). It shows us the first hints of Spuffy, giving us some serious Jungian symbolism between Spike and Buffy early on, and does well in establishing Xander/Anya and Willow/Tara as beautiful OTPs. Faith and Buffy’s foiling is fantastic. The Halloween episode was very fun as well. However, it suffers because its Big Bad, Adam, is not all that compelling thematically--yet, he could have been. See, the final battle pulls off the Power of Friendship in a really strong way but notably the season does not end there. Instead, it ends on dreams of each character’s worst fears, continuing what we saw in Nightmares in Season 1. Why? Because it shows us that the characters’ wars aren’t against monsters, but monsters of their own making: their flaws. Adam, as a literal Frankenstein, exemplifies this, but it wasn’t capitalized on as well as it could have been.
Unpopular Opinion: Beer Bad isn’t a bad episode, at the very least because Buffy gets to punch Parker. It’s not one of the series’ best, obviously, but it does give Buffy an arc in that she gets her daydream of Parker begging her to come back, but she has overcome that desire and her desire for revenge. If we wanna talk about bad subtext in Season 4, Season 2′s Not It sex subtext continues in the Where the Wild Things Are episode in this season; it’s a powerful callout of abusive purity-culture churches, until the fact that the shame creates a literal curse undermines the progressive message it’s supposed to send. Also, the Thanksgiving episode (Pangs) is a nightmare of white guilt and Oh God Shut Up White People.
Biggest Critique: Riley is awful. Like Kennedy, he had “love interest:normal” stamped on him and that was it. The thing is, he could have worked as an Angel foil, representative of the normal-life aspect of Buffy to Angel’s vampire/supernatural aspect, but the writers never explore this and seemed to even try to back away from that later on. They threw all the romantic cliches at the wall to see what sticks, from klutzy “I dropped my schoolbooks, that’s how we met” to cliché lines that had me rolling my eyes. Do you know how bad a romance has to be to make me dislike romantic tropes?
Favorite Episodes: Fear Itself, Hush, Restless
Villain rankings:
Dark Willow, the only villain to be truly sympathetic. While the addiction coding was insensitive and, while unsurprising for its time, aged extremely poorly. That said, Willow’s turn to the dark side after Tara’s death worked well for her character and the story: it was believable and paid off what had been building since Season 1's “Nightmares” episode (Willow’s inferiority complex).
Glory managed to be genuinely terrifying, and humorous/enjoyable too. Her minions and their numerous nicknames for Glorificus were hilarious, as was her intense vanity. Her merging with Ben--a human being who genuinely wanted to be kind and good--added complexity and tragedy to her role.
The First. A really good take on Satan. The seventh season as well as the First’s first appearance in season 3′s “Amends” had kind of blatant Christian symbolism, and so the First being essentially Satan works. Their disguising themselves as dead loved ones and the subtle manipulation they used to alienate people was really disturbing and well done.
The Mayor, who was a terrible person but a truly good father. He provided an interesting contrast to the normal ‘bad dad’ bad guy character, in that he provided Faith exactly what the other characters refused to: he saw the best in her and offered her parental support, while the heroes didn’t and wound up pushing her away.
The Trio, who were villains ahead of their time: whiny fanboy reddit dudebros, basically. The stakes seemed so much lower than fighting Glory, a literal god, the previous season. But that’s why they worked so well for Season 6′s human themes, and were especially disturbing because we all know people like them. I also appreciated the surprisingly sensitive takes on Jonathan and Andrew, who got to redeem themselves, but Warren did not, and I don’t think he should have either.
Angelus + Drusilla. I’m ranking them below the Trio because Angelus was just sooooo different from Angel that it was difficult for me to feel the same way for him. He was still Angel, so it wasn’t possible to enjoy his villainy, but he also wasn’t nearly as sympathetic as Dark Willow, had no redeeming qualities like the Mayor, and wasn’t as disturbingly realistic as the Trio. However, the emotional stakes were excellently executed with him as the Big Bad, in that you were never quite sure how to feel and it just plain hurt. Also, Drusilla was a favorite recurring character. She was sympathetic and yet batsh*t enough to be enjoyable as a villain at the same time.
The Master, who was just completely camp and really worked as an introductory villain. He was scary enough to believe he was a threat, and was funny enough to introduce the series’ humor as well. He was, like Glory, an enjoyable Big Bad.
The Gentlemen, the one-off villains of Season 4′s Hush who were genuinely terrifying. It’s not as if they got a lot of explanation or any backstory, but they didn’t need it.
Caleb, the misogynist priest. Fitting with the First’s Christian symbolism, Caleb serving as a spokesperson of all bad religious beliefs felt appropriate. He was also a good foil to Warren--being actually supernaturally powered instead of a wannabe--and to Tara’s family in being full-out evil. I despised him.
Snyder. Okay Snyder is not a Big Bad like Adam is, but let’s face it: Adam is lame compared to the other villains. But Snyder as a principal? He was so irritating and yet really well used in the series to critique overly strict, hypocritical teachers. Like, we all know teachers like him. I loved to hate him, and his ending was so satisfying.

Why Modern Cartoons is Not Great as it Used to be in this Decade
As 2010′s draw near to the end and begin a next-generation, cartoons have changed from being a fun episodic adventure with a meaningful message and can get dark sometimes to a story-driven show with deep messages. While cartoons have a great start in early 2010s such as Adventure Time, Regular Show, Gravity Falls, and My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, however as time passes cartoons are becoming less interesting and not many aren’t talking about it. So what the hell happened with modern cartoons? Let’s get to the bottom of what happened to this decade of cartoons and why isn’t anyone talking about it anymore
The Animation Quality
The quality of the animation of cartoons back in 2000′s were amazing, so many variations of animation styles that look very appealing such as
Samurai Jack
Avatar: The Last Airbender
Fosters Home for Imaginary Friends
Recess
Proud Family and so many more
But now in modern cartoons, most cartoon shows are using a similar style of animation which many people called it “Calarts style”. Most cartoon shows are using because it’s cheap however it takes away creativity, more detail nor being organic. Look at Infinity Train, compare from the pilot to the release
It looks very boring having most cartoons look the same. Then there’s artistic freedom where creators let them draw whatever they want such as Steven Universe and OK KO. That sounds good but really though it just looks lazy and unprofessional. This is very distracting that most characters go off-model every scene like why Rebecca and Ian-Jones Quarry think it was a good idea!
Great to Below Average
So now let’s talk about the three shows that were once popular Steven Universe, Voltron, and Star vs The Forces of Evil. The trope I’ve been seeing as of late about these shows that it was pretty hype and they deliver on that. All they need to do is conclude it and call it a good cartoon but then crash and burned in later seasons.
Steven Universe didn’t get popular until “Jailbreak” and that was when everyone was watching it. It had character development, an interesting world of gems, a gorgeous background and has one of the best soundtracks. This isn’t surprising because the creator is the same person who wrote Marceline episodes in Adventure Time which was Rebecca Sugar that created the series. Then season 4 and season 5 happened which the show drop in quality like mostly the show prefer showing filler which makes the plot go too fast and made arcs underwhelming, crystals gems and Lapis Lazuli and Peridot aren’t being used that much in the show and having each villain being beaten by simply talking to them. While there is Steven Universe Future but that hasn’t gotten interesting in my opinion.
Star vs The Forces of Evil is a show used to be interesting for the two seasons and “Battle for Mewni” arc but then shipping drama got out of hand and that resulted to fell from grace
Then there’s Voltron and we all how that turned out for the last two seasons
What these three have in common that they set up this interesting premise and world in the first few seasons but they all went downhill. Awful character writing, insane plot twist, and terrible pacing. I did wish that those shows would get better like how Adventure Time and Regular Show had one bad season but after that, they both got better but they didn’t and it went from being great to disappointingly average.
Comedy Over Messages
Now that’s got the most hype shows, let’s talk about shows that not many people talk about because the premise and world aren’t engaging enough to watch and which they are We Bare Bears, Craig in the Creek, Clarence, OK KO, and The Loud House. While I’m not saying they aren’t bad but it is just not interesting to watch, it's just that it’s too tame and too comedic. The main issue I have it doesn’t really teach viewers like they used to anymore
OK KO was about to talk about gun violence but they turn it into a comedy. In “Let’s Not Be Skeletons” people overuse the gun and resulting everyone to turn skeletons and KO tries to stop it but fails. By the end of the episode, it was a dream and calls Congress to stop it from happening. I really hate how writers of this episode of making a serious issue turn into comedy and that’s a pretty awful way of doing it.
Look at Static Shock and Fat Albert, instead of making Gun Violence a joke, they talk about how serious it is by having someone shot and that devastated the characters a lot
Then there's Hey Arnold, it really dives into serious issues such as
“Pigeon Man” showcases that some people are meant to be with other people while others like Pigeon Man are just different and can’t be with other people.
“Helga on the Couch” showcases Helga's anger issues and those issues manifest because her family ignores her because of her sister. Never truly cares for like no makes her lunch for school and no one brought her to school when she was a young girl. The only person that cares for was Arnold.
Then there’s my personal favorite, “Arnold Christmas”. Mr. Hyunh is always sad at Christmas and this episode revealed that he had a daughter and all he wanted was to see her grow up but there was a war coming near his village. In order to do so, he had to give her up so she can have a better life. It took 20 years to get out of the country and he almost gave up hope to find her until Helga helped Arnold to search for her and be reunited with her father.
Modern cartoons don’t show those kinds of messages anymore and there’s something worse than that and I hate how cartoon shows keep doing this.
Today’s Villains
I” ve been seeing a lot lately that the main antagonist isn't handled well in cartoons as of lately. Most villains have been getting redeemed lately and not paying their crimes. While show creatures try to make them sympathetic and the victim however it doesn’t excuse them for their crimes.
White Diamond who caused multiple mass genocide on worlds, brainwash any gem that stands in her way and shatter gems gets easily defeated by simply getting talk to and just not gonna do it anymore because Steven said so.
Mina Loveberry and her Mewni soldiers wanted to destroy monsters. When her and her army magic depleted, she just goes in the wilderness and no one stopped her.
Moon Butterfly helped Mina create her soldiers so she can retake the throne from Ecipsa. Instead of having the monsters and her surrendering the throne that she was attending to do, however, her plan backfired when Mewni Soldiers and Mina wanted to kill all the monsters. Why didn’t Moon saw that coming, they were clearly racist against them. Then by the end of the show, she never once apologized for what she has done.
Starlight Glimmer created a cult that no one has cutie marks until the mane six defeated her in “Cutie Map” She returns and her revenge on Twilight by going back in time and making sure Rainbow Dash doesn’t perform the Sonic Rainboom. After multiple going to multiple timelines, she finally catches up to her and then her tragic backstory been revealed and it was very disappointing. The reason she caused all of this because her friend moved away and that’s it. That’s not all, instead of her facing her crimes like most villains such as Tirek or Queen Chrysalis, she gets off the hook and she became friends with Twilight in a matter of minutes
A good example of a good antagonist is Aku from Samurai Jack. When he first appeared in the show, he’s pure evil, destroying anything that stood in his way and ruling over the weak but as the show progresses, the serious villain became more comedic villain but that doesn’t mean he’s a silly character, he’s far from that. He’s still all-powerful and should be taken seriously. This is what I want from a villain. He’s powerful, he’s truly evil and has a personality.
Villains can be sympathetic and relatable however shouldn’t be forgiven so easily. When a character crosses the line by taking multiple innocent lives should never be redeemed, even if they have a sad backstory
Cartoons lately have become less popular in this past decade, the glaring problems about cartoons are its animation, comedy over messages, messy plots, and terrible villain. People will only talk about cartoons from the late ’80s to 2012. I’m afraid that this day of age that it isn’t appealing anymore than in previous years. The only animation that people will talk about is anime shows which I can’t lie, is far superior to cartoons as of now. I feel that the only way it can make it back on top is it needs something like Adventure Time or Gravity Falls moment that reinvent it more relevant and view to modern audiences. I really do like to watch cartoon shows for animation, message, and characters but I keep seeing issues in modern cartoons and I hope that it will change in the future.

The Professor and The Genie: A Full Breakdown
Welcome one and all to A Comprehensive List of All The Genie Lore In Puppet History, With Theories. If you aren’t familiar with what I’m talking about, go watch all of Puppet History made by @wearewatcher on YouTube and come right back here. No dilly-dallying. For those of you who are, you’re probably also aware of the recurring character of The Genie on the show, whose role has been the subject of much speculation among the show’s audience. I couldn’t find a compilation of references/ theories, so I made one!
The show, which tells somewhat obscure stories from throughout history, accompanied by a special guest each episode and a musical number at the end of each tale, is hosted by The Professor, a little fuzzy blue puppet, who commonly references The Genie, with whom he holds a deep-rooted grudge. I will be going through all the existing information on this guy so far, and discussing a few theories as to what all this is about. It’s like my very own BuzzFeed Unsolved except I’m just one very bored person with way too much time on her hands.
Let’s compile all of the currently known information: on April 10, 2020, in the video entitled, “Surviving The Titanic: History's Luckiest Woman • Puppet History” the Genie is first mentioned, at 16:10, in a question about what Violet Jessop saw while peering off of the ship. The answer choice reads, “A Genie??????????????????”
On August 14, 2020, in the video entitled, “How America’s First Female Detective Saved Abe Lincoln • Puppet History” the Genie again comes up, at 23:04, in a question entitled “What’s the matter?!?”. The answer choice reads, “The secessionists had found a magical genie!” The pattern was starting to emerge.
On September 4, 2020, in the video entitled “The Disastrous 1904 Olympics • Puppet History” the genie is once again mentioned, at 5:06. The genie is referred to as “fickle” and apparently keeps making things worse, no matter what the Professor says. From this we can gather that the genie may have gone back on some sort of promise he made to The Professor, and is escalating the situation.
On September 11, 2020, in the video entitled “Isaac Newton's Nemesis • Puppet History” the genie is mentioned in an answer choice at 6:45, reading “A genie that will stop at nothing to make my life a living hell, even though I followed his silly rules to the letter and I don’t owe him anything.” Clearly, things with the genie are only getting worse. The genie is harboring some sort of grudge against the Professor, be it the Professor’s fault or not. The Genie also provided rules for something-- we’ll return to this later.
On September 18, 2020, in the video entitled, “The World’s Greatest/ Rudest Samurai • Puppet History”, The Genie once again comes up in the answer choices at 24:52, as “A genie who insists I owe him, and I wish I had a wish left so I could wish Musashi were here to teach him a lesson.” Once again, we see evidence that the Professor may have made some sort of deal with this genie, and whether or not he fulfilled his end of the bargain is still up in the air.
On September 25, 2020, in the video entitled “Policarpa: The Revolutionary Teen Spy • Puppet History”, the Professor makes not one but three references to the genie! We get so much lore here! First up, at 1:05, Ryan Bergara asks The Professor how old he really is. The Professor responds with this: “Yeah, you know, you start jumping around in time and things get a little funky…”. Just a few seconds later, the Professor says, “Well, if you could ask the subject of today’s story, which, how could I, it's not like you can just wish to be able to time travel…“ The pain in his voice here is apparent, devastating, and very real. Lastly, later on in the video at 20:05, The Professor gives the following answer choice to the question, “What happened?” (to Policarpa). The choice reads, “A magical genie meddled once again with history, and turned Policarpa in, and tried to pin the blame on a bespectacled puppet, who is at this point starting to suspect he may have made a deal with the devil.” Now here’s where things get real interesting. The Professor is now alleging that not only is the Genie out to get him, but the Genie is actually influencing history.
On October 2, 2020, in the video entitled “The Grisly Journey of the Donner Party • Puppet History”, The Professor goes on a longer than usual tangent about the genie at 18:38, saying, “He had cached a trove of treasured items, including a magical lamp that only a creature about the size of a human hand could get to, and inside the magical lamp was a Genie, capable of granting any wish, up to and including turning a seemingly everyday item into a secret time machine, but that if you wished for that, THE GENIE WOULD BE A TOTAL PRICK ABOUT IT, SO MAYBE BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR.” The genie appears in a short montage of clips, with the professor’s above monologue in the background. The genie shown is just Shane in eyeliner and an Aladdin-style genie costume, cackling and looking mischievous. The professor rubs the lamp in the skit, and the genie does that evil villainous hand thing, and casts some sort of spell. There’s a lot to break down. First up, we may have gotten a glimpse into the Professor’s actual past here. It seems as though at some point in his life he was either told about, or found out about this cache of treasure deep in the mountains, that only a creature about the size of a human hand could get to. This is important because it debunks one of the most popular theories circulating the internet right now-- that the Genie somehow turned the Professor into an immortal, time-traveling puppet. The Professor was clearly already a puppet, as he had access to this treasure trove. Next we get the part about the time-machine. If we can assume that the Professor is projecting his past experiences onto the poor guests on this show, we can surmise that the Professor used his wish to wish for one of his ordinary objects to turn into a secret time machine. We will delve more into this later.
Finally, on December 25, 2020, in the video entitled “The Story of St. Nicholas • Puppet History”, The Professor goes on another rant about the Genie in the answer choices, saying “The same curse that eventually befalls all of God’s creatures-- an evil genie was pursuing him through time and space to steal something the genie himself had made magical!” From this we can gather that, after the Professor wished for his time machine, the Genie gave him some rules and conditions he had to agree to. The Professor may have broken these, hence why the Genie is pursuing him across time and space.
Now that we have all the existing information, assuming I didn’t miss anything, let’s get into the theories.
My current, working theory is that The Professor happened across this lamp somewhere deep in the mountains, and wished for a Time Machine from the Genie inside. The Genie (who appears malevolent in the Professor’s flashback, but I’m gonna chalk that up to personal bias) agreed, but gave the Professor some conditions and rules to follow regarding the Time Machine. The Professor agreed, and promptly broke these rules. The Genie then demanded something in return-- This could be the Time Machine itself, but given Shane’s twisted mind I would assume the Professor owes the Genie something more. Perhaps… his soul?
Or maybe just a fine, I don’t know.
The Professor refused to pay up, possibly time traveling away to hide from the Genie, and is now on the run. A fuzzy blue fugitive. But, the Professor also mentioned that the Genie actually meddles with history, and tries to get the puppet in trouble for stuff he didn’t do. This begs the question; why would the Genie resort to a relatively harmless source of mischief to target the Professor, instead of just taking whatever is owed to him? This almost implies that whatever it is the Professor owes the Genie has to be given willingly. Hence, why the Genie is making his life “a living hell”.
The puppet also seems to be immortal, or at least old enough to not remember how old he is. In his words, time is “funky” when you travel around it too much.
We also don’t know which of the Professor’s objects could be the Time Machine. Some have speculated (some being me) that it’s his satchel, or hat. But, when you think about it, it seems most likely that it’s actually the theatre itself. The Theatre does often seem to transport you back in time to the actual stories, although that could just be Watcher’s killer editing skills. Either way, the Time Machine seems to be a source of great trouble for the puppet, so maybe just… get rid of it?
There are 2 main schools of thought here, in my own opinion. The idea that the Genie is in the wrong, and is relentlessly torturing this poor Professor for no good reason, or the idea that the Genie is actually justified in his anger at the Professor, and that the Professor brought this on himself.
Theory #1: The Genie is a malevolent entity, and tricked the Professor into making an unfair deal with him. This is clearly what the Professor himself believes, or wants us to believe. The Professor says, and I quote, “starting to suspect he may have made a deal with the devil.” If this is true, and the Professor is actually on the run from the Devil himself, then that would imply that the Professor sold his own soul for this time machine, the most commonly referenced deal with the devil. However, since that would be a little far-fetched even for Shane (although, let’s be real- would it?) we could go with the second option- the Genie is just a Genie, but he did trick the Professor into making a bargain with him, and the Professor still believes he has held up his own end of the deal.
Theory #2: The Genie is just doing his job, and the Professor’s the one at fault. Now I don’t want to take any sides here, but this does seem to be the most plausible theory. Even the Professor, on several occasions, has implied a set of rules that he agreed to when he wished for his Time Machine. What these rules were we may never know, but the Genie clearly thinks that he broke them and is now owed something. Historically, in folklore from all over the world, Genies are tricky creatures, and will try to deceive you into wishing for stupid stuff, or agreeing to things that you maybe shouldn’t agree to. However, in almost all cases, if you manage to outsmart them, or keep your word, they will leave you alone. Let’s say The Professor knew what he was getting himself into when he wished for the Time Machine. He agreed to the rules, and he understood that if he broke them he would owe the Genie something. Yet he went ahead with it, and now the Genie is after him. He clearly broke the rules and the Genie is just collecting on his bargain.
All in all, we don’t have enough information yet to actually know what this Genie’s DEAL is (see what I did there). Is the Genie an evil being trying his very best to ruin the unlucky Professor’s life? Or is the Professor the one who wronged the Genie, breaking his word and escaping via Puppet TARDIS? The answer will remain… Unsolved.

Hello! Thank you for hosting this 111 follower event. I'd like to participate, if that's okay? I hope you don't mind me doing this anon,, Anyway, my favorite characters are tanaka and akaashi (very contrasting i know lol) and I'm a masc nonbinary, my hobbies are figure skating, drawing, and playing the piano. I do decently in school, I'm in the photography club, I have a cat named mickey, and I've been described as a very blunt person? I'm not afraid to say what's on my mind once I've formed an opinion. I try my best to include everyone (be it like, servers, or group projects, etc.) Since I used to be the weird, quiet, anime art kid people used to pick on. But like ever since senior year started, I've become more popular?? Its just mostly freshmen though (who somehow found my tiktok like what the hell)
Ahhh I’m so sorry for the late reply!!! Anyways ofc!!!!
I match you with:
Akaashi Keiji
your trope is:
School Rivals
ahhh I belive the both of you would make a great match, his cool introvert personality mixed with your outgoing and forward personality!!!! 🥺
How the two of you met:
the two of you met by you being Bokuto’s childhood bestfriend in elementary and middle school, you moved and came to a Highschool called Fukorodani for your last year in highschool seeing your best bud Bokuto and he introduced you to Akaashi, the two are like polar opposites and Akaashi looked so chill, you noticed you had tons of classes with him but he seemed like he didn’t care you were in them, which made you think he hates you so you “hate” him too, the math exam test scores were up and you were excited to see you were in first place only to see Akaashi ranked 1- and that’s how the rivalry beginned, it was always him and you that had the most tension in class he didn’t know why he wanted to beat you but something about being against you made classes a little exciting and his heart throb from seeing you… while on your end you were focused on your after school club and studying really hard just so you could beat him once… till one day you saw him studying at the library casually doing his Ap Lang work “Hey that’s where I always sit” you said pissed off he could look so calm doing today’s frustrating homework “huh? This is the school library l/n, I don’t know what your talking about, I didn’t know this was your seat sorry” he said stretching his arms getting out of the seat “nevermind also… um how do you do that prompt?” Forgetting that you forgot to finish that one question, he laughed at your sudden question, you just asked him if he could get off a seat and now your asking him for help? He asked you to pass your notebook to him and he could see detailed doodles on little corners of the page “they draw so cute” he thought to himself while helping you with your work, it was like fate was on his side, once he saw your tiktok on his fyp with you doing your little hobbies he followed you and you were shocked he found it because almost no one from school knew your tiktok account… by now you “rivals” have been more close and the more he’s with you the more he knows every little detail/thing you do and even Bokuto secretly ships it, one day you lost your precious cat Mickey…. You were devastated looking through sidewalks and streets to find your cat, your cat Mickey was your best friend when you were alone and whenever you came home in the past your cat always comforted you and now your cat is gone… when you came to school the next day Akaashi noticed your outgoing and bright persona was changed you looked so sad and he asked if you were okay… you told him everything and he just reassured and told you he was going to help you find Mickey “Akaashi… you don’t have to” “no problem y/n I don’t like seeing you sad” he said face flustered, after school he searched the neighborhood with you and surprisingly the both of you found your missing cat in a little bush “thank you Akaashi!” You said jumping into a hug only for him to be more flustered and slightly push you back “y/n I really like you” “I really like you too!” You said with a smile on your face heart beating out of your chest
what a relationship with him would be like:
Akaashi and your relationship would be so adorable- okay he loves when you take photos of him with your little camera he brought for you, he loves it when you big spoon him and he loves that your really honest about things that make you uncomfortable and things that make you comfortable, when it’s winter he would take you skating just to see you skate, the both of you got another cat, he loves leaving sticky notes full of sappy romance manga lines that were used for him to work on, so expect those, since being in a relationship with you he feels more confident on speaking his mind and whenever he sees you he just can’t stop smiling no matter how many months or years you’ve been dating

Just a bit of a rant
First just a PSA for anyone who reads this who is waiting on a ship, I have several in my inbox, but I will be away from my computer so I have no idea when I will be answering them today.
Now for the rant-y shit. So I woke up this morning only to find that while I was asleep one of the fic writers, I am sure atleast one of you will know who I'm talking about, has decided to stop posting here on tumblr. And this is devastating I genuinely loved their content, and their stories never failed to make me smile, especially the Paz ones. And the reason they left? Because all of the fucking hate they were receiving through this fandom all because she was posting things about a popular fanfic, all things that I agree with may I add. It wasn't even things really directed towards the fic itself or the writer, just the small group of stans that are going around and being assholes to everyone other than the writer of their beloved fic.
Now I have been on tumblr since I was in middle school, and I am a sophomore in college now, and I have been in several fandoms where similar things have happened. I used to be scared to really interact with people because of fucking drama, so I watched people come and go and I lurked until recently. Dont get me wrong, I am soooo happy with my following and I have been fortunate enough, knock on wood, to have never received hate. Its just I am so tired of watching people who love writing or creating for fandoms get knocked down and they leave tumblr because they got all their motivation taken by people who won't even show their face in their inbox.
This is honestly tiring and ridiculous. You can mark my fucking words, if ANYONE who follows me actively sends hate to people for THEIR opinions you can fucking leave. I don't want that toxicity on my page. I try my damnest to be open and welcoming to anyone and everyone, but I am tired of being the nice girl that just sits there quietly and watches people come and go.
Anyway, sorry for getting worked up. If you actually read this I am sorry that its probably all over the place, I can't write straight when I'm upset. I hope you all have a wonderful day/rest of your day! 💗
#rants#im kind of tired of this fandom#but i love sw too much to stop making content#so you dont need to worry about me leaving#ive been here so long and stayed through shit#so the only way to get me off this fucking site is to peel it from my cold dead fingers

Rambling about V3 Again
Today I saw a really interesting quote from author Brandon Sanderson and it honestly got me thinking. He talked about what he considers the single worst thing you can do with critique in writing, and that’s if a critic “tries to make your story into one they would write, rather a better version of one you want to write.”
That got me thinking about V3.
I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that V3 is a very polarizing game, and I’ve seen many people talk about how they would’ve preferred to see the story play out, from character arcs to deaths to story conclusions. And while I do honestly enjoy seeing alternative perspectives and takes and AU’s, I feel like a lot about the game, what it’s trying to say and be, is skewed by those ideals.
I’m not saying that the critiques about the game are invalid, because there are a fair share of flaws with the game. What I am saying is that we end up talking so much about what we wish V3 could’ve been that what V3 was trying to be often ends up lost in that, and I want to talk about it.
It wasn’t until I really saw this quote that I was able to articulate all my likes and dislikes about the game and the reactions to it into a cohesive whole, which is what I’d like to do here.
So let’s ask this: what was V3 really trying to be?
Let’s start from the game’s theme: the relationship between truth and lies. This is best exemplified by the fact that you have the option to lie during trials, that you can use deception to find the truth. That’s a very different take from the previous games, where hope was associated with finding and confronting the truth.
Kokichi is another example, as he’s a self-admitted liar who claims to lead a criminal organization and it’s hard to tell exactly what he’s thinking or saying. Yet Kokichi actually helps bring the group to several truths: he helps find the culprit in trials, he reveals Maki’s identity as the Ultimate Assassin, tells the truth about Gonta murdering Miu and it’s thanks to his actions that the group later discovers the reality of their situation.
Throughout their journey, the group is confronted by numerous truths they don’t want to acknowledge, even refusing to do so and attacking people who continue to push them through. And with every revelation, there’s always those lingering details that don’t really make a lot of sense.
Let’s look at the game’s main narrative. At the start of the game, Kaede remembers she was kidnapped in broad daylight, thrown into a van, and brought to some abandoned school with a bunch of other people. She doesn’t act like a particularly nice person and is dressed differently, at least until the Monokubs arrive and give everyone their new clothes and memories. From that point, the narrative shifts considerably.
Kaede is suddenly an outgoing, optimistic leader and Shuichi is a sullen, withdrawn detective who serves as her deuteragonist for Chapter 1. She’s resolved to escape the Killing Game and tries to rally the group together. However, when her methods don’t prove successful and they start drifting away from her, she considers saving them by any means necessary and goes so far as to attempt murder against the mastermind. When that happens, she’s found guilty and executed, leaving Shuichi to take up her role as protagonist.
As you go through the game, using devices called flashback lights that apparently reawaken lost memories, you learn more and more about the reason that the group was brought here: the Gofer Project. When meteors began raining down on earth, all seemed lost until they established this project to send a group of survivors into space to colonize a new planet. A group of Ultimates.
They had established early on that Ultimates have even greater rights in this world: they’re the only ones allowed to vote and hold office. As the meteors came down and the news of this project got out, some people formed a cult that believed it was divine judgement and that mankind should be destroyed. That’s when they began the Ultimate Hunt, pursuing the candidates for the Gofer Project across the world. The Ultimates, with no other way out, decided to erase their memories of talent and live their last days as normal people.
To protect them, the people in charge spread a false story that the Ultimates had died, even holding a fake funeral for them and sent them into space secretly. However, while everyone was in cold sleep, one member of the cult- Kokichi- had sneaked aboard and piloted the ship back to the ruined and now inhospitable earth. They have no way back and no way to survive outside, and thanks to Kokichi’s claims to be the mastermind, they’ve been killing each for nothing. The group ultimately loses hope.
However, they’re resolved to continue on in their fight against the mastermind when they find a flashback light that reveals they weren’t just any ultimates: they were the next generation of ultimates from Hope’s Peak Academy. It wasn’t really the meteorites that got everyone, it was an alien virus that pushed mankind to the brink of extinction. That the cult that rose in the wake of this was Ultimate Despair.
That seems like a definitive way to link this game with its predecessors...until you really begin to stop and pick it apart. If this was about saving mankind, why did nobody have their memories right away? Why would you only bring 16 people? Why students who don’t make them suited to colonization? Why people like a death row inmate, a serial killer, a self-proclaimed liar and criminal, and an assassin?
Furthermore, going through many Fte’s highlights how much of the characters’ backstories seem very out there. Gonta wasn’t raised by wolves but a race of dinosaur people living in the woods, Kirumi is so hyper-competent that she became prime minister during the meteor crisis, Korekiyo’s killed almost 100 women and yet has never been caught, Maki can attend high school despite Japanese orphanages being too underfunded for kids to usually attend, Tenko’s neo-aikido breaks all the rules of traditional aikido and she's impulsive, has low pain tolerance, and disregards fair rules, none of which are very befitting of a martial artist.
And to conclude, even I thought that the reveal of their connection to Hope’s Peak felt very fanficy and out there, especially when the game had made no references or implications of it beforehand. But the reason for all of this is simple and effective:
None of this is real. It’s all staged.
Chapter 6 reveals that everything from their identities to the outside world they thought they knew was all just a fabrication. In truth, Tsumugi shows herself as the mastermind and that they’re actually in the 53rd season of an in-universe show called Danganronpa. Something alluded to even in the beginning of the game with the Team Danganronpa logo. This moment was very make or break for a lot of people, but let’s treat it fairly.
According to Tsumugi, the outside world has become a peaceful, boring place and Danganronpa is the only source of real entertainment the people have. A place where people literally come to have their identities replaced with those of Ultimates and then made to kill each other. This, as it turns out, was an outgrowth of the actual series we’d played before. A game that’s gone over 53 times.
This revelation is devastating for the characters. The lives and memories they’d known were all fabrications, which Tsumugi claims to have intentionally written. The Flashback lights were designed to implant fake memories to manipulate them, which is why that Hope’s Peak connection was set up after everyone gave up following the reveal of the outside world. A truth that could lead the world to despair, a lie that could lead the world to hope.
She even goes so far as to show everyone’s audition tapes, claiming that Kaede, Kaito, and Shuichi himself were willing to participate in the killings out of sheer misanthropy, popularity, and morbid excitement
Kiibo is also revealed to be the audience’s means of interacting with the game, able to carry out their wishes and can even be hijacked and used as a way to fight against the characters’ decisions.
In the end, Tsumugi claims that the ongoing battle of hope vs despair needs to continue in perpetuity and that the survivors need to sacrifice someone, since only two people can survive Danganronpa. Shuichi, however, convinces Maki and Himiko not to vote for anyone and actually convinces the in-universe audience to give up on the series. Kiibo then blows the set to hell and allows Shuichi, Maki, and Himiko the chance to escape and see the world outside and what sort of influence they could have.
Now, let’s this break this down piece by piece here, because I feel like this part of the game is often conflated. Often I’ve seen people say that Chapter 6 is a giant middle finger to fans of the series, that nothing about the series really mattered, or that the flaws of the game can simply be attributed to bad writing on the creator’s part.
I honestly used to be in that camp myself, but the more I’ve thought about it, the more I feel those statements don’t hold up to scrutiny. We often conflate writing and narrative decisions we don’t like with bad writing. However, if the creator deliberately wants the narrative to move in that direction and has made intentional foreshadowing, references, and motivations that match it, we can’t simply equate that with it being “badly written.”
It’s not bad simply because we would’ve preferred they do something different. There’s a lot of very acclaimed books out there that I’ll admit I don’t care for because of their narrative decisions, but I wouldn’t go so far as to say they’re badly-written.
Furthermore, if something intentionally doesn’t make sense in-story, that is not bad writing. That is purposeful on the part of the creator, not a plot hole. The Gofer Project is not supposed to be a logical narrative, it’s meant to serve V3′s role: deconstruction of the nature of the series. It does this in many different ways:
Sequelization: 53 is a ridiculous amount of entries in a franchise and as I’m sure we’re all aware, as the number of entries goes up, the writing quality tends to go down. The Gofer Project story was purposefully meant to be nonsensical because it’s a story in an in-universe franchise that jumped the shark long ago.
A lot of people found it confusing or ridiculous that Shuichi and Kaede would have a romantic connection despite knowing each other barely a few days. That’s also the point; quick romances are a convenient narrative device to establish a means for character growth, followed by fridging her, a bad narrative trope designed to propel Shuichi toward development. Tsumugi even said as much during Chapter 6.
Similarly, Maki’s role in the story and her feelings for Kaito were reminiscent of that as well, with him helping her come out of her shell.
When you go back, you can see Danganronpa is loaded with references to other series. Tsumugi is an obsessive otaku and went so far as to fill the entire story with deliberate references and callbacks to things she enjoys.
The Monokubs are deliberate references to executive decisions to add more marketable and merchandisable characters as the series drags on.
The fact that there are (supposedly) people willing to sign up for a killing game deconstructs the idea that some in the fandom may have had. That is, actually being in a killing game would not be fun or exciting, but horrific and traumatizing. Most of us wouldn’t be badass detectives or heroes, we’d be scared out of our minds, afraid, and want to find a way out.
Furthermore, Shuichi being repeatedly told that he’s just a fictional character and that his role is to be the protagonist, to go through hardships and come out stronger for the audience’s entertainment pisses him off so much that he wants no part of it.
The climax is ultimately a deconstruction of what the series is famous for: the battle of hope vs. despair. In-universe, this has been reduced down to a simple narrative where the audience wants the same thing again and again: to see hope win in the end. Because hope keeps winning, the audience keeps wanting more. It’s become so formulaic that the audience doesn’t want to break out of its shell and just wants to see it over and over.
The final PTA against Kiibo is not meant to be an insult to the audience, but a representation of fighting against toxicity and entitlement in the fanbase, especially the ones that don’t want change. It’s not saying “you’re stupid for liking this series,” it’s saying “don’t be like these people.”
And how does the game? An unsatisfying ending that’s so bad that it drives the audience to give up on the show, finally allowing the killing to stop. Tsumugi decides she can’t live in a world without her favorite show and decides to die.
And that brings me to what I think is the ultimate thing that people conflate about the ending: that it’s all fiction, so nothing about it matters. That the entire franchise was fake, so it’s not worth your time.
That’s exactly the opposite of what V3 is trying to say.
First, Tsumugi is a completely unreliable narrator. The kind of person who let fiction consume her entire life, yet she believes it can’t change reality. She’s a liar and a hypocrite, and there’s no way of knowing if anything she says about the outside world is even true. It could be like she says or it might not be.
The fact that they have technology that can remove memories and add fake ones adds an entire dimension of ambiguity to everything she says, especially when you consider how the beginning of the game does not match up with what she says. We have no idea what the kids were really like before the killing game, so why should we believe anything she says?
And how can we be certain of her claims that she just wrote everything as planned? Kokichi and Kaito managed to put together a plan that completely threw her and Monokuma for a loop
Shuichi, Maki, and Himiko ultimately choosing to take the words of Kaede, Kaito, and Tenko to heart, even if they were part of a fictional narrative, is proof that they still had an influence on the trio. They choose to take something meaningful from their experiences regardless of the reality of their situation. And that’s something we all do.
The media we consume has an influence over who we are as people, and it’s part of why so many of us have such strong attachments to works we love. They were often influential in help shape who we are as people now, for good and for ill, and it’s important to take that into account.
V3′s message is that yes, that is important, and that you should read and enjoy stories and fiction, just as long as you don’t let it consume your life. They can influence you and even the world at large, and so it’s our responsibility as writers, artists, and creators to use that influence positively, to use the medium as a way to change the world for the better. That the only way for stale franchises that we’re tired of seeing over and over is to demand change, even if that means walking out on them. That the only way for things to change is for us to take action and demand change.
And by the end, we may not see immediate results, but we can at least work hard at trying to bring them about. V3 ends with Shuichi, Maki, and Himiko facing an uncertain future in a world they really know nothing about, but hopeful that their actions can and will change the world for the better. Real life doesn’t have solid, satisfying conclusions and it always doesn’t play out like a story, but that doesn’t mean you should give up on ever finding something satisfying or hopeful out there.
This, by no means, is me saying that V3 is a flawless story. I can point to numerous critiques that I still think hold water. However, Sanderson’s point is that we shouldn’t criticize a work based on what we wish it was rather than how it is and what it was trying to do.
I know there’s a lot about the story that bothers people, I know there’s a lot that wasn’t polished and a lot that feels uncomfortable and hard to swallow. Like Shuichi, coming out feeling confused, lost, unsure of what to do, but choosing to see merit and things to take to heart even in a story that turned out to be full of lies and uncomfortable truths.
If you didn’t enjoy V3, I wouldn’t force you to enjoy it. If you did love it, then you should love it. These are all just my thoughts on a story that, as time goes on, honestly feels more and more relevant to me.

yoo, okay this is a bit of an angsty request but i NEED this !! essentially, the reader loves midoriya (or anyone of your choosing, really) yet its unrequited ^^ maybe a popular ship or smth is real in ur writing, like tododeku and reader is all "oh heckles, midoriya doesn't love me" and just,, sad stuff ?? maybe even a hanahaki disease au if you'd like!!! i want it as a n g s t y as possible with no happy ending jksdhgjdsghjdsjgk thank you sm ily
Of course I had to take the chance to write a hanahaki au - idk if this is angsty enough - im bad at angst lol, but here ya go anon
No - this couldn’t be happening. You didn’t love him, you couldn’t. But - the bloody flower petal in your hand spoke otherwise. You felt the world spiraling around you, yet you were frozen.
Midoriya Izuku - your best friend who had stolen your heart and given his to another. Of course, there was no chance of Izuku returning your love, he was dating Shouto. You remember the excitement in his eyes when he first told you they were together - and the excitement you had reciprocated for your friend. If only you knew the suffering you would later go through because of him.
Of course, there is no knowing whether Izuku would have loved you if he wasn’t with Shouto - but it seemed the possibility was nonexistent at this point. So, you had 3 choices. You could muster up the money for surgery and lose all your feelings for Izuku, get lucky and make yourself fall out of love with him, or die. And right now, you desperately hoped you were lucky.
Quickly grabbing your phone off of its nightstand, you opened your messages, sighing softly at Izuku’s contact near the top of your messages, and found Momo. She’s vice class rep - so she’s probably the best person to ask to get your homework without getting scolded, and you texted her “I don’t think I’ll be able to make it to school tomorrow Momo, I’m feeling pretty sick. Could you tell me the homework so I don’t fall behind?”
It was late, so you didn’t expect a reply. But you didn’t need one - you weren’t going to school. If you weren’t around Izuku, maybe you would forget about your feelings for him and be cured. You were hoping, anyways.
You woke up the next day late in the afternoon - it’s not often you get to stay home from school - to a text from Momo, saying “Oh no! I hope you feel better, I’ll send you the notes and homework after school. Get some rest!” You smiled at her kindness and laid back on your bed. But then, you noticed the other messages in your notifications. A few on the groupchat, with little “get betters” - which you were expecting. This class treats itself like a family, people are gonna worry if you’re sick. There were also more personal messages from Eijirou, Tenya, and - Shouto and Izuku.
Shouto had also become a close friend of yours in the time you’ve known him, the two of you always being around Izuku allowed you to develop a bond yourself. So it was no surprise that he texted you, but all you felt was anger towards his “How are you feeling? Do you want me to bring you some soba? I’ll even warm it up for you.” There was a small twinge of guilt in your stomach, he obviously didn’t deserve your anger, but you couldn’t even spare him a response.
Then Izuku - how were you supposed to forget about your feelings when he was constantly so perfect? You found yourself smiling at his message, a “Good morning y/n! I hope you’re feeling better today! I’ll come by and check on you after I finish my homework :)” Sitting up, you went to respond - but you were interrupted by a sharp pain in your throat before you began coughing, and you covered your mouth with your hands only to feel the light touch of petals fall into them.
There were more than last night.
Tears welled up in your eyes as you stared at your hands once again. It hadn’t even been a full day, but already the flowers were growing rapidly. With shaky hands, you shook off the petals and returned your phone, quickly messaging “Don’t worry about me, I’m fine. You don’t need to come by either, I don’t want you getting sick and I’ll probably be sleeping.”
The seriousness of your situation finally set in - last night you hadn’t seemed to fully grasp that if you didn’t do something to stop this, you would literally die. A few choked sobs escaped your lips, and you winced in pain.
You roughly fell back down onto the bed - frantically wondering what to do. Would Recovery Girl be able to cure you? Would the disease go away if you just forgot about Izuku? You grabbed your phone and started searching for answers. Articles upon articles on the disease, talking about what the misfortunate people who contract it can do to save themselves.
What you found was disappointing - there are no accounts of people being able to overcome the disease on their own, and always had to resort to surgery or death. You didn’t have the money for surgery, and you didn’t want to bring your friends into this and ask for help - but you didn’t want to die.
“What am I gonna do…” You threw your phone onto the bed and put your hands over your face, holding back your tears. As much as you simply wanted to avoid Izuku until you didn’t love him anymore, it was impossible. Sweet Izuku, who deems it his responsibility to be the most caring person on earth, would be devastated if you were to suddenly cut off ties with him. Besides, how could you when you were forced to see him everyday at school regardless. There was only so long you could feign being sick - you doubted the school wouldn’t do anything to help you.
The rest of the week was spent in the comfort of your own room - you had managed to convince your friends that you were too sick for school, and for anyone to visit. Researching options had been your top priority, mainly what the surgery entails, but everything you found made you less and less optimistic.
The surgery costs thousands of dollars, money that no average high school student would have - meaning unless you were to ask for help there would be no way to get the surgery in the first place. And even if you could, there were no certain results. With how rare Hanahaki is, there aren’t enough accounts of successful operations to rely on. Well - they all worked, those who got the surgery were alive. But some had results more drastic than others.
From the result you were hoping for - being you would simply lose feelings for Izuku and live on - to people who had completely forgotten about the person they loved all together. As much as you didn’t want to die, how would you live on without remembering Izuku? Your best friend. He’s been there for you through so much, the thought of living on without him was terrifying.
Yet, everyday you were reminded with the inevitable coming of your death. The itching in your lungs grew everyday, as did the amount of petals you were coughing out. It wouldn’t be long until your lungs were full of flowers - and you suffocated.
----
“Y/n! Are you feeling better?” Eijirou smiled brightly at you as you walked into the classroom, and you returned a soft smile before sitting in your desk. “I guess.” All you could do was be optimistic, at least in front of your friends. After a week of practically being MIA, you decided you wouldn’t worry them anymore. Besides, if you waited any longer, you’d probably wake up to Katsuki blowing down your door with 15 people behind him.
Everything was as normal, you talked with Denki and Mina as you waited for class to start, Katsu gave you a “look who finally decided to show up,” - which you knew meant he was glad you were okay - and you even managed to be happy when Izuku ran in and gave you a hug. Your smile strained when Shouto said hi to you however, both because you felt bad for having ignored his texts all week, and because you just didn’t want to be around him. At least not yet.
Aizawa soon walked into class, and everyone hurried to their seats so that class could start. It wasn’t anything special today - just some more basic hero instruction, and you were happy that you could take it easy as to hopefully not trigger your coughing. You’d be able to tell him about it after class - maybe he could find a way to let you stay out of school until you figured this out.
Still - class was especially long today. Having not been present for a few days seemingly made the period feel much longer than it truly was. And just as luck would have it, an itch began to grow in the back of your throat, and you panicked. You didn’t want anyone else knowing - you didn’t want that kind of attention on you. To be the poor soul of 1A who might die
You raised your hand, wanting to use the restroom as an excuse to get out of there.
“Yes, y/l/n?”
“Can I-”
Speaking apparently only made it worse, and before you could even finish your sentence you hunched over - beginning to cough up a multitude of flower petals. However, this time was a lot worse than the previous ones, your coughing not letting up until you were choking on petals - likely due to your forcing yourself not to cough for so long. Petals were overflowing from your hands as you attempted to cover your mouth, falling onto your desk and down to the ground.
Everyone’s attention had already been on you, and with the surprised expression on Aizawa’s face as he ran over to you - they all saw the dark red blood dripping out of your hands and the soft pink petals blanketing your desk. Your attempt at hiding your sickness had only pushed it forward, and now there was nothing you could do.
Aizawa rubbed your back until you calmed down, and you looked up from your hands to the horrified looks on your friends’ faces. Your face was covered in blood and tears - you looked a mess.
“Let’s get you to Recovery Girl, okay? Can you stand?”
You nodded, but Aizawa still made sure to hold onto your arm just in case. The room was silent as he led you out, all eyes stuck on you. As you looked back - you were met with the wide eyes of Izuku, and you quickly looked away.
Aizawa had left right after dropping you off at Recovery Girl’s, ruffling your hair a bit and giving you a soft smile in an attempt to cheer you up.
“Hanahaki disease… I don’t think I’ve ever seen this personally. I can’t promise I’ll be able to help you, but we can try.”
You sat on one of the beds as she walked around the room, grabbing a washcloth and wetting it before bringing it over to you.
“You probably want to wash all the blood off.”
As you slowly rubbed the washcloth over your mouth, Recovery Girl grabbed your hand and kissed it. Normally, you’d immediately feel better. But other than the scratchy feeling in your throat - nothing changed. You could still feel the slowly growing flowers filling your lungs, they hadn’t gone away.
“How do you feel?”
“The flowers are still there… I can feel them.”
Recovery Girl sighed, “What about your throat? I’m sure all that coughing must have hurt - does your throat feel better?”
Nodding slowly, you felt tears forming in your eyes. So she couldn’t heal you.
“I’m sorry sweetie, I’ve tried all I can. All I can do is heal the physical damage - but no matter what I do, the flowers will keep growing. And if they keep increasing their growth at this rate, soon that won’t even be enough.”
With all the luck you’ve been having lately, it wasn’t surprising that this was the outcome. But that didn’t mean you weren’t disappointed. Before you could let your emotions overcome you and start crying in front of her, you jumped off the bed and began making your way out.
“Oh - I understand… thanks anyways.”
With a forced smile to Recovery Girl - who’s worried expression only served to make you feel worse - you trudged out of her office and into the long hallway.
“Y/n! Wait up! What happened?”
Izuku chased you down the hall as you left Recovery Girl’s office, a hopeful smile on his face. Apparently he had made his way down there as soon as class ended, wanting to make sure that you were okay. That smile disappeared as he saw your face, contorted in distress as a few tears escaped your eyes. “She wasn’t able to help you, was she?”
He took your silence as a no, but still tried to be optimistic, “Well, there has to be something we can do!”
With all the pain you were in, you’d think that your main worry would be yourself. But no - that hopeless look on Izuku’s face was where your worry had settled. He obviously felt that it was his duty to help you, even if there was nothing he could do.
“There’s surgery, and there’s dying.”
Izuku’s eyes glossed over and he grabbed your wrist, pulling you close.
“You gotta get the surgery y/n! Please - I don’t want you to die.”
If only he knew what he was asking of you. Would he tell you to get the surgery even if he knew he was the one you loved? Would he let you risk forgetting about him - and all the memories you had formed together?
“I don’t have that kind of money, Izuku. And I’m not going to bother anyone with my problem.”
His frown deepened, and his eyes shot around the floor as if he was looking for an answer, “But - I’m sure everyone would help out-”
“No - Izuku. I’ll figure it out. Don’t worry about it, please. It’s not your problem, it’s mine. Let me figure this out on my own.”
With your words, his grip on your wrist loosened in shock, and you used that as an opportunity to pull your hand away.
“I’ll be fine Izuku, what ever happens, just let me figure it out.”
You left him standing there, worried and hurt as you ran back to your dorm room - just wanting to be alone to process the events of today.
----
A constant knocking at your door drew you awake. As soon as you arrived in your dorm, you found yourself especially drained of energy, and quickly fell asleep. You desperately wanted to just ignore the thumping, but whoever it was wasn’t going to let up, so you sighed and slowly sat up and made your way to the door.
“Shouto? What’s up?”
When you opened the door, you were surprised to see Shouto standing there. He asked if he could come in, and you reluctantly agreed. As soon as you closed the door, he started talking.
“Izuku told me about what happened. Are you really planning on doing this yourself?”
It was hard to read his expression. On one hand he looked worried, but the sharp look in his eyes proved his frustration.
“You’re really going to let yourself die - just so you don’t get anyone else involved?”
His sharp gaze made you feel almost ashamed, as if your decision was completely idiotic - although you supposed it was. But you couldn’t bring yourself to reply, you’ve already caused enough trouble as it is, you don’t want to make others fix your problem.
Shouto sighed and placed his hand on your shoulder, “I’m paying for your surgery. We’ll schedule it for this weekend, can you hold out for that long?”
Your eyes shot to his, the sharp look continuing to tell you he was serious. Even so, you gave him a light glare, crossing your arms as you replied, “What? No - you’re not! You heard it from Izuku, I’m not asking for anyone’s help.”
“Then you’ll die.”
That made you pause. It wasn’t like Shouto to be so blunt, at least not anymore, but he really was serious.
“I - … I don’t know… I don’t know what I’ll do.”
“Y/n, let me do this. I know you don’t want my help, but I don’t want you to die. No one wants you to die, and you don’t want to die.”
He wasn’t going to take no for an answer, so with a heavy sigh you nodded, “Fine… but - I’ll owe you something. Anything.”
Shouto chuckled lightly at that, and nodded, finally taking his hand off your shoulder as he spoke “Deal. Actually, I know what I want. Hanahaki happens when you love someone that doesn’t love you, right? So - who do you love? I’m just curious.”
Fuck. Of course he would ask that. You forced a smile, “Ah - I don’t wanna talk about that… Isn’t there something else you could ask, or that I could do for you? There’s gotta be something.”
“I don’t have anything else in mind, this is all I wanna know right now. Are you embarrassed by who it is? Or is it me?”
He laughed when he mentioned himself, but he was still looking at you expectantly. If Shouto was anything, apparently it was persistent.
“If I tell you, you have to promise not to get upset.”
“I promise.”
With a deep breath, you looked at the ground and muttered, “Izuku.”
Shouto’s face fell from a soft smile to a painfully neutral expression. The room was silent, except for your slight coughing - all the talking had edged you closer to another coughing fit, and you wanted him out before it happened.
“I’ll call the doctor tomorrow.” Shouto walked to the door and opened it, but paused before he could walk out, “And don’t worry about it y/n. It’s not your fault, I’m not mad.” At that, he fully left, closing the door behind him and leaving you alone once again. At least he understood.
----
The school had allowed you to take the rest of the week off under the suggestion of Aizawa and Recovery Girl, not wanting a repeat of last time. This time, however, you weren’t allowed to stay holed up in your room, as the class forced you out after school to spend time with them. It was times like this that you really appreciated your friends - they would help comfort you when you started coughing up more flowers, and made it their mission to cheer you up.
The weekend came soon, and Saturday morning you were met once again with Shouto knocking at your door.
“Ready?”
Bouncing on your heels, you tried to relax your panicky brain. You’d be fine. The operation would go by smoothly, and you’ll be fine. Nothing to worry about.
“Yup! Let’s go.”
The trip there was fairly quiet, you were too busy thinking about the possible outcomes of the operation - and of Izuku. It would hurt to lose these feelings for him, as much as you hated them. To suddenly not love someone anymore sounded terrible. But, you’d still be friends - and that was all that mattered.
It didn’t take too long to arrive at the hospital, only about a 30 minute train ride, and soon you were waiting in the doctor’s office to go back. It seemed it was a good day to get the surgery done too, as your breathing had gotten worse and worse by the day. You were nowhere near suffocating quite yet, but another week and you just might be.
“Y/l/n-san, you can come back now.”
You followed the nurse into the back room, Shouto following close behind you.
“So, you got Hanahaki disease, huh? That’s real unlucky, but at least there’s surgery. Now, you do understand that other than the removal of the flowers, we can’t be certain of the actual effect the surgery will have on you mentally.”
“I know, I’ve done a lot of research. Whatever happens, I’m ready.”
The nurse nodded, and smiled at you, “Alright - then just sit down right there and relax. I’ll be back in a minute, and we can get started.”
She left to grab the doctors, and you waited for them to return.
“Are you scared?”
“Just of the uncertainty. I know it’ll work, but I’ve read a bunch of articles on how the whole emotional process can go wrong.”
Shouto sat next to you on the bed, “Don’t worry, I’m sure it’ll go fine.”
It wasn’t too long until the doctors came back into the room, dressed and ready for surgery. Shouto was forced to leave the room, and he promised to be right there when you woke up. Once he was gone, the doctors finished their final preparations and the lead surgeon came to prepare you.
“I’m going to put you under now. Are you ready?”
You nodded shakily - both excited and scared to see what would come.
“Alright, just relax. It’ll be over before you know it.”
He put the mask on your face, and your eyes fluttered shut into a deep sleep.
----
The doctor called Shouto in as soon as you woke up, wanting you to have a familiar face to help adjust while the anaesthesia worked its way out of your system.
“Everything seems to have gone great, the flowers are gone and they’ll live.”
Shouto thanked the doctor, and went into the room. You were still a bit dopey from the anesthesia however, so he let you be, wanting you to rest, and went to call Izuku.
“Shouto! How’d the surgery go? Is y/n okay?”
Shouto couldn’t help but chuckle at Izuku’s enthusiasm. Other than you, Izuku had been the most worried about the surgery - he wouldn’t be able to handle it if something went wrong and he lost you.
“Yes, they’re okay. They’re still waking up, but once the doctor says it’s okay for visitors to come I’ll text you.”
“Ah! I’m so glad! Okay, I’ll bring everyone with me!”
It was a while later when you fully woke up, finally aware of what was going on as you looked around the white room.
“Shouto? What time is it? Did the surgery go alright?”
“Around noon, and yes - you’re perfectly fine. Are you hungry? I can go grab you some food.”
You nodded, having not eaten all day, “Yes please. Oh, and could you grab me my phone? Momo said to call her after the surgery.”
Shouto went to grab your bag and began searching through it for your phone, but decided you’d want to know that your friends would be coming soon as well.
“I’m sure she’ll be coming over soon, Izuku said he’s gonna bring everyone to come visit in a bit”
He expected for you to be happy at the news, but instead your face contorted in confusion, and to Shouto’s horror - you asked, “Who’s Izuku?”
---
As everyone from 1A flooded into the room, you broke out into a bright smile. They all circled around the bed, spouting random comments about how happy they were that you were okay and that the surgery was a success. You excitedly listened to all of them, happy to hear that your friends cared about you so much.
“Y/n! I’m so glad you’re okay! I was so worried!”
Izuku, finally being able to push his way through everyone and up to you, had latched himself onto you, throwing his arms around your shoulders and pulling you into a tight hug. However, you began pushing him off of you, not wanting some stranger to be touching you so closely.
“Uh, I’m sorry, but who are you?”
Izuku’s eyes widened as you said this - and everyone else in the room turned quiet. Your confused expression as you eyed him carefully further emphasized your seriousness. Why didn’t you remember him?
“I’m… I’m Izuku. Don’t you remember me?”
You gave him an overly kind smile, and Izuku had a glimpse of hope as you seemed to have a revelation, but instead, “Oh! You’re the person Shouto was talking to earlier! Nice to meet you!”
You seemed to recognize everyone else in the room, as you happily turned to Denki who started telling you about something that happened at school to ease the tension.
Confused, Izuku shakily grabbed his boyfriend’s hand - who’s pained expression worried him more - and pulled him to the corner of the room.
“Shouto… what happened? I thought you said the surgery worked.”
He was quiet for a moment, trying to decide how to word the news in a way that Izuku would understand, “Well… It did. Y/n’s cured. But - Hanahaki is such a rare occurrence, doctors don’t know all the technicalities of it yet. They can’t assure results, and sometimes, the patient ends up forgetting about the person they loved all together rather than just losing their feelings.”
Suddenly, Izuku went numb. That would have to mean - that meant you loved him.
You loved him.
It was his fault you went through all that pain.
Flashes of you coughing up blood and petals in class flooded his brain - and the pain on your face as you looked at him - he caused that. And now, he couldn’t even apologize. You had no idea who he was.
“I’m sorry Izuku.”
He barely noticed as Shouto pulled him into his chest, and he cried softly. As he looked over Shouto’s shoulder, he saw you laughing happily with the others - a sight that should make him smile.
But all he felt was pain - even though you were right there, he had lost you.
