Sionna, 2024
Sometimes I do this. I design this whole shoot that takes advantage of colors, or wardrobe, or the way I chose the backdrop in the setting, and then the first image I share really doesn’t show any of that. I just remember developing this image and immediately being drawn to it. So no, you can’t see the yellow of the lemons, or the green stems of the gladiolus. I perfectly hid the edges of backdrop which I purposely often shot this day. I loved the contrast of the black, the way everything feels, cool, soft, and gentle. But right in the center of this image is that powerful right arm, almost like Sionna is flexing.

I’ve always loved books for the stories that take me places I’ve never been, meeting people I might never meet, and sharing in their lives. Today is the birthday of Zora Neale Hurston, so it reminds me of Orunamamu, the story teller I met in Oakland. …and a good book for a rainy winter’s day “are you lookin’ for me? are you? are you lookin’ for ME? well you won’t find me ‘cause I’ll be Dancing! I’ll be dancing with the THUNDER and the IRRESISTIBLE RYTHM of LIFE!” Orunamamu, Story Teller, Oakland, 1996 🇺🇦💔🌎💔🌏💔🌍💔🇺🇦 #wise #woman #storyteller #america #documentary #portrait #photography #120 #hasselblad #camera #schwarzweiss #blancoynegro #blancinegre #bnw @kodak #tmax100 #film #blancetnoir #黑白 #Hēiyǔbái #siyahbeyaz #shirokuro #blackandwhite #filmisnotdead #istillshootfilm #filmisalive #pdx #portland #nw #streetphotography #oregon @hasselblad @hasselbladculture https://www.instagram.com/p/CnIVFOTSmp5/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Emily @sunflower-spirit at a park south of Ypsilanti, MI in early spring 2021. Photographed with Kodak Tmax100 35mm film. She looks so witchy particularly with the ancient knotted tree in the other picture!

Here is a crop to show how much detail 35mm Tmax 100 film has. I scan at over 5000dpi to achieve 36 megapixels of digital resolution, just slightly overshooting the film's approximate 34 megapixels of fully analog granular detail.

Lomography Potsdam Kino B&W 35 mm ISO 100
I wish someone would have told me earlier how wonderful this one is.
Tumblr media
So far, my experience with certain lomo films have been ... hm, interesting? Of course, lomography is all about including random ingrediences into your pictures, a trial and error approach, not meant to predictably (re)create shot after shot.
Tumblr media
Redscale was my least favourite so far, Purple was fun, otherworldly, but nothing I wanted to try again, Metropolis has a - literally - cool look, I am glad to have one left for another occasion.
Tumblr media
However, besides these somewhat extravagant films, there are also more normal ones in Lomography’s stock. Potsdam Kino B&W is a low ISO black and white film, meant to capture midtones very pleasingly while retaining a high exposure latitude and fine grain. As if Ilford’s HP5+ and Kodak’s TMax100 had a child together.
I could not find anything to not like about this film. Contrast, grain, gradation, all so pleasing, so classic. Admittedly, if you after a very dramatic look with high contrast and prominent grain, this is not for you. For all others, if you can, give it a try, and it does not even costs a fortune.

Tried scanning a couple of negatives with my Samsung phone. Didn't work so well. But there is something I like about these. Wonder if I will like them more or less when I do a proper scan.
